Streszczenie:
Global markets are increasingly taking advantage of the strength and economic advantages of a diverse global workforce. It is common on international projects to find multi-cultural teams located in multiple countries. It is also common to find such projects led by Project Managers who come from many different countries. So having a person raised in India managing a project in China, with a design team in the USA, procurement procurement teams in Japan and Mexico, and a drafting team in Albania is not unusual. Even in historically monolithic markets like the USA, it is far more common to have mulit-cultural teams and foreign competition. In addition, the pressure on the industry to increase productivity and reduce costs is unrelenting. This leads to flatter project structures, and the need for leadership at multiple levels. My experience in such markets, and the glaring need for a Cross-Cultural Leadership model that could be used to improve leadership skills in international markets were the reasons for undertaking this thesis. The hypothesis of this thesis is that there are of cross-cultural leadership dimensions that are effective and essential, regardless of culture. Those dimensions are Trust, Empathy, Transformation, Power, and Communication. The thesis first explores the cultural and leadership aspects of Cross-Cultural Leadership through a review of the published literature. The literature research was then subjected to an exegetical review of the themes that emerged, and used to construct the Descriptors, and Sub-Descriptors for each of the leadership dimensions. The thesis also explored the transfer of cultural knowledge with metaphors and storytelling. In a fast paced business environment, developing a richer understanding and sensitivity to other coulters, in general and specific, is a skill that Leaders must possess. Lastly, the thesis explored the connections between conflict management and Cross-Cultural Leadership. Conflict management skills are becoming ever more important due to the rapid changes that are common in the current business environment. Change, cultural mis-information, scarce resources, poor communication skills, contractual ambiguity and complexity are but a few of the reasons that managing conflict is a critical skill for leaders. IV The design of the testing protocols was bifurcated. One track evaluated the hypothesis, the other track evaluated the connection between the Leadership Dimensions hypothesized, and the GLOBE survey. The GLOBE survey was utilized to investigate if a viable connection existed between the Leadership Dimensions and a broad based international survey of cultural dimensions. The testing of the hypothesis was performed using a Delphi panel of experts in international cross-cultural leadership, through two sessions of questions with feedback after the end of the first session. Subsequently, the results were analyzed, studied, and evaluated with an eye toward my practical experience in the field - sense making. The results were that the hypothesis was confirmed, and the connection to the GLOBE Survey cultural dimensions was also confirmed. A model is presented to summarize the findings of the thesis, called the Cross-Cultural Leadership Intelligence (XLQ) Model. As discussed in the thesis, Project Management has not emphasized leadership in the current body of knowledge (PMBOK), and it only makes general reference to cultural considerations. Recognizing this, The Project Management Institute (PMI) has funded a study that recommends more research in the area of cross-cultural leadership, and a new grant to study the question of how global the PMBOK really is. Both of these issues are addressed by this thesis. The XLQ model provides a framework for assessing and training Project Managers in cross-cultural leadership skills. The model is a global one that can be used across cultures, business models, and markets. The model also points towards the need for further research into metrics, education, training techniques, and of course, further empirical testing of the model itself.

In the past two decades, a variety of policy frameworks have been designed worldwide for the protection and stewardship of cultural landscapes. While the National Park Service (NPS) in United States has developed a system of preparing Cultural Landscape Inventories and Reports (CLI & CLR) to address sites under their administration, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has its own criteria for designating cultural landscapes within an international forum. This document attempts to outline and critically analyze these two approaches with the aim of exploring their applicability to the Indian milieu. The ultimate aim of the research is to attempt the formulation of a methodological framework for the implementation of cultural landscape preservation in India. This is achieved by first exploring endemic Indian notions about time, space, nature and culture, followed by the proposal of a few key concepts or broad recommendations that should, in my opinion, guide any cultural landscape preservation efforts in the Indian context. This is supported by a discussion of a few best practices at sites both in India and worldwide where appropriate solutions were sought. Lessons from these as well as the analysis of the NPS and UNESCO models together give rise to a methodological framework form initiating cultural landscape preservation in India.

Streszczenie:
The thesis defends a form of contextual dialogical multiculturalism as necessary to the important task of achieving cross-cultural understanding. In response to the simplified accounts of culture found within abstract liberal theory and "strong" multiculturalism, the thesis develops a position that responds to the deep reality of difference and the embeddedness of persons within different horizons, whilst at the same time sensitised to the dynamic and internally diverse nature of cultural and religious communities. Engaging with claims within contemporary debates that multiculturalism segregates communities, it is argued that a form of multicultural integration is necessary to foster connection between groups. Through appeal to a range of literature, including Anglo- Indian imaginative literature and feminist discussions of culture, the thesis develops a more subtle and nuanced understanding of culture and identity as characterised by change and continuity. Using the insights of Gadamer's hermeneutic position and the feminist "world travelling" approach, it is argued that cross-cultural understanding and dialogue can be reached only through complex recognition of the situated position from which the self and the other speak. Gadamer's metaphor of an evolving "fusion of horizons" is invoked to illustrate the ability of a dialogical contextual position to mediate a path between moral relativism and abstract universalism. The compatibility of a culturally sensitive approach with a situated universalism is illustrated through discussion of the culture of human rights, which is seen as a powerful example of universalism constructed through dialogue.

Aim. Carry out cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the VISA-P questionnaire for Ukrainian-speaking patients with patellar tendinopathy. Materials and methods. Cross-cultural adaptation of the English-language VISA-P questionnaire was performed according to the recommendations of Beaton et al. The internal consistency of the VISA-P questionnaire’s questions was determined by the value of α-Cronbach and the mean correlation coefficient. Statistical calculations were performed using the package STATISTICA version 6.0. A significance level of 5% was applied. Amount of 94 people were involved in the adaptation and validation of the questionnaire (20 people - to assess adaptation, 58 people - to assess reliability, 16 people - to assess validity). Results. The Ukrainian version of the questionnaire was adapted in five successive stages. The latter was tested. It is determined that the coefficient of average correlation between questions (average inter-item corr.) of the scale is 0.47; the value of α-Cronbach is 0.75, which indicates a good adaptation of questions in the Ukrainian language. Sufficient validation of the Ukrainian-language version of the questionnaire was confirmed by testing individuals with confirmed patellar tendinopathy by ultrasound and individuals with various complaints of knee dysfunction (8 in each group). A significant difference (p≤0.01) was found between the results of the survey of these two groups. The proper sensitivity of the Ukrainian version of the VISA-P questionnaire is also confirmed by the absence of a «ceiling effect» and a «floor effect». Conclusions. The VISA-P questionnaire for Ukrainian-speaking patients with patellar tendinopathy is equivalent to the original, characterized by satisfactory reliability and validity. Therefore, the Ukrainian version of the VISA-P questionnaire can be recommended for assessing and monitoring the process of physical rehabilitation of persons with patellar tendinopathy.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the structural challenges when designing in two different alphabet systems, Roman and Hangul (Korean alphabet). English being the universal language, it is common to see this pairing in various design solutions, from packaging to posters to websites. However, Korean communication design has a very short history and for that reason, it adopted prevailing western guidelines. Under the western guidelines, Korean designers face challenges when designing text because the guidelines are not entirely fitting for the Korean alphabet. Therefore, Korean communication design needs structural guidelines for the everyday practitioners to use them effectively when multi-scripting. For my solution, I designed typographic guiding principles that allow two different alphabet systems to work harmoniously when multi-scripting. My research builds upon Nanum Type Families, open source typefaces. These guiding principles are designed with two goals in mind—provide thorough suggestions when multi-scripting for the Korean communication design community and also encourage a greater appreciation for and use of Hangul within that community.

Creativity – the generation of novel and appropriate ideas – and psychopathology have been associated for a long time. However, the impact of cross-cultural influence has been somewhat neglected in the literature. The present dissertation demonstrates that (1) creativity is barely related with self-actualization and that, nevertheless, (2) creativity has a strong association with schizotypal personality disorder. However, people with real-life creative achievements showed decreased schizotypy and there are gender differences regarding creative capacities. (3) The creativity – schizotypy link is likely to be moderated by cultural differences between Russians and Germans. Results are discussed with regard to culture-independent validity of the constructs creativity, schizotypy, and self-actualization, with regard to the problem of psychometrical assessment of these constructs, and with regard to a role of creativity in good mental health. Future studies might account for how real-life creativity differs from cognitive creative abilities in other psychopathological and personality aspects, how culture influences the creativity – self-actualization association, and whether the association of creativity with schizotypy and self-actualization is consistent in other age groups. Conclusively, these results contribute to cultural psychology of creativity by extending how the creativity – schizotypy association varies between cultures, as well as by pointing out the differences between real-life creative achievements and cognitive creative abilities. Furthermore, the results extend the humanistic approach showing that self-actualization and creative abilities may not rely on similar personality characteristics.

Streszczenie:
Volunteer tourism has become a popular phenomenon worldwide and questions have been raised about the work that international volunteers do in Third World countries. Scholars have debated the possibility of a cross-cultural ‘misunderstanding’ developing between international volunteers and local community members. This research is based on the idea that there can be a possibility for cross-cultural understanding to take place. This thesis aims to gain better insight into the role that volunteer tourism organisations (VTOs) play in fostering cross-cultural understanding between the volunteers and the local community members that they work with. A framework suggested by tourism expert Eliza Raymond (2007) was used to assess how exactly organisations play a part in encouraging this type of understanding. The research focuses on two VTOs, Projects Abroad and Coaching for Hope as case studies. Both these organisations are involved in the facilitation of development programmes in disadvantaged communities in Cape Town.

This paper aims to investigate if individuals from an academic setting encounter the same types of difficulties and problems as those discussed in literature for individuals working in a business abroad. There is much literature on the most common difficulties and problems that business individuals may encounter when working overseas. We have identified three main areas which are communication, relationship to hierarchy and decision making norms. However, there is little documentation on difficulties from an academic perspective. In order to see if any similarities or differences existed within these areas, we interviewed individuals from an academic setting, to see if their experiences are similar to the business individuals or not. The sample in this paper consists of teachers and researchers at Umeå University which have experiences from working overseas. In total we interviewed ten individuals and the result point in the direction that individuals from an academic setting do not experience the same difficulties and problems as individuals from the business world do. From the three topics identified as the most common problem areas in a business setting, two (communication and relationship to hierarchy) showed a result that is not in accordance with the existing literature on the business context and one (decision making norms) was not directly related to the individuals represented in this sample .

Streszczenie:
Culture plays an important role in the development of counselling concepts. The concepts imbibe significant aspects of the culture mirroring the values and goals of the culture they are born in. In this research an attempt has been made to examine three agency concepts from a religio-cultural perspective different from the one in which they were developed. Three counselling concepts, namely, locus of control, learned helplessness, and self-efficacy have been reviewed to identify common themes across the concepts. A Hindu philosophical perspective was discussed drawing upon the Advaita Vedanta of Sri Shankaracharya, and concepts from Srimad Bhagavad Gita. Limitations of the common themes identified were then examined from this Vedantic perspective to arrive at propositions about the agency concept, and counselling implications. Agency in the three counselling concepts is found to be equated to the self. The self is seen as a product of the mind, its beliefs, expectations, and thoughts; the actions performed; and the outcomes achieved. The self is thus buffetted by failures, negative outcomes, undesirable events. Future decisions and actions are influenced by past outcomes making it hard to 'let go’ of the past and act in the present. Also, the self is constantly monitored and evaluated through the data provided by the mind, and the outcomes attained. Great deal of faith is placed on the mind and its processes. The mind is viewed as an appropriate and accurate instrument for understanding the self. Due to this mistaken identification of agency with the self, individuals seek unrealistic and confining ends, distorting reality and the conception of the self. Counselling, based on these concepts, is likely to generate limited and problem specific solutions entrenching the individual in the doership and enjoyership. In contrast, self in the Vedantic perspective is not agency. Self is the unchanging, eternal essence due to the presence of which agency is experienced, but is different from agency. The notion of agency belongs to the field of the not-self. The mind and its processes are constantly changing, and creating structures which are considered unreliable bases upon which action can be based. Mind therefore is considered to be the not-self. This kind of discrimination of the self from the not-self is deemed to be an important and necessary step to growth. Due to the broad perspective of self, there is a greater potential for remaining free from notions of agency and outcome orientation. This enables individuals to persevere regardless of the outcomes attained, 'let go' of the past, and act in the present.

Much of this research however, is presented from the perspective of instructors or program developers. Thus, the purpose of this study is to look at cross-cultural orientations from the learners' perspective. This study examines the learners' conceptions in an attempt to obtain a wider understanding of the cross-cultural orientation phenomenon. The research was guided by an interpretive perspective and a qualitative technique. Two series of interviews with the learners of a cross-cultural orientation program, classroom observations, interviews with the instructors and program documents provided the data for this study. Analysis of the data indicated that the learners' perspective, participation in and control of orientation programs were important themes to address.' Moreover, the learners' held varying conceptions of these two themes. With regards to the theme of participation, a few learners felt that orientation programs should mainly present information while the majority of them perceived that orientation programs should present information as well as provide opportunities for related experiences. Thus, some saw themselves as passive participants, while others emphasized the importance of being active. Two conceptions also emerged with regards to the theme of control of orientation programs. Again, there were learners who perceived that orientation programs should be controlled by the instructor, while majority clearly understood orientation programs to be controlled by both the instructor and the learners. Furthermore, the concepts of communication, collaboration and understanding in the orientation process were also emphasized. While these four varying conceptions represented different ways in which the learners understood the cross-cultural orientation phenomenon, the analysis of the data also indicated that in actual practice, these conceptions were further complicated by the dynamics and the complexities of the nature of cross-cultural orientations. In exploring the learners' conceptions of cross-cultural orientation programs, this study provided a different perspective to understanding the cross-cultural orientation phenomenon. It identified the importance of paying closer attention to the adult learner in orientations and the need for further research in the area.

Streszczenie:
The objectives of this study were to investigate the cultural differences in test-wiseness between Chinese and Canadian students; to study the impact of test-wiseness on British Columbia Grade 12 provincial examination results among Chinese students in British Columbia; and to examine the relationship of test-wiseness, and four correlates (verbal ability, achievement motivation, length of residency in Canada, multiple choice experience) among the Chinese students. The Test of Test-wiseness and Student Survey questionnaire were administered to 41 Grade 12 foreign Chinese students who wrote the provincial examinations in January 1990. Completed test data were compared with the same data from Canadian and Chinese immigrant students who wrote the provincial examination in June 1989. The data were analyzed by a linear regression model. The results indicated that ethnicity accounted for a significant amount of variance in test-wiseness. Foreign Chinese students were significantly less test-wise than both Canadian and Chinese immigrant students. Foreign Chinese students scored significantly lower than the other two groups in absurd-options, different-options, stem-options link and guessing subtests in the Test of Test-wiseness. The results also showed that test-wiseness did not account for a significant amount of variance in provincial examination scores (English 12 and Algebra 12). The four correlates together accounted for very little variance in test-wiseness. None of them significantly correlated with test-wiseness, except that length of residency in Canada correlated positively with test-wiseness. Finally, the three ethnic groups showed no significant differences in achievement motivation but foreign Chinese students scored significantly lower than Chinese immigrant students who scored in turn lower than Canadian students in verbal ability. The findings imply that language plays a crucial part in test-taking situations. With inadequate English language skills, foreign Chinese students were unable to satisfactorily comprehend the test questions, and hence their test performance were very close to what would be expected from random guessing. It is suggested that these students require examination coaching skills as well as improvement in English language skills.

Moving to a new country and having to adjust to its culture is often traumatic for immigrants, as they experience intense emotional and physical stresses stemming from new roles and rules in their familial and workplace relationships. This study examined sociocultural and psychological factors that were part of immigrant executive’s cross-cultural adjustment experiences. Specifically, this dissertation sought to: 1) elucidate the decisions that prompted elite professionals to move to Canada, 2) examine participants’ stories associated with their pre- and post-moving experiences and relocation challenges, 3) identify coping strategies immigrant executives used to manage their personal and professional lives successfully, and 4) pinpoint suggestions and recommendations these executives had for other elite professionals thinking of moving to Canada, and for counsellors working with such clients. To best achieve my purpose, the following dissertation explores the rationale for using qualitative research approaches with particular reference to narrative as a method and theoretical frame work to better understand the feelings, experiences, expectations, and yearnings of six male immigrant executives/CEOs/managers, and to explore the complexities and difficulties embedded in their life and work in their new country.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the factor structure of distress, comprised of depression, anxiety, and somatization, across Turkey and the U.S., and to investigate the metric invariance of the instruments used to measure distress: The Beck Depression Inventory-II, The State Trait Anxiety Inventory Trait subscale, and TheSymptom Check List 90-R Somatization subscale. Data from 778 Turkish and U.S. participants were used for the analyses. It was found that depression, somatization, and anxiety are three distinct but related constructs for both Turkish and U.S. participants. It was also found that BDI-II, STAI-Trait, and SCL-90-R-Somatization do not have metric invariance across the two cultures, and these instruments do not measure the same distress construct across Turkey and U.S. Stated differently, distress as measured by these three instruments has different meanings for Turkish and U.S. participants. According to the results of a freelist analysis, somatic, cognitive, behavioral, and affective reactions to distress were equally salient for Turkish students. In contrast, affective and somatic reactions to distress had more salience for the U.S. participants. Some of the results obtained from the current study contradicted previous findings, while some were consistent. The results were consistent with the way depression, anxiety, and somatization are conceptualized in the DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) as separate constructs, but contradicted Krueger et al.'s findings (2003) and Broom's unitary model of personhood (2000, 2003). Results from the freelist analysis contradicted the previous findings indicating that Turkish individuals are more likely to somatize compared to individuals from the U.S. (Gureje et al., 1997). The methodological differences between the current study and the previous studies (Gureje et al., 1997), such as differences in the instrumentation and the educational levels of the participants, may have caused the observed differences in the findings. The results from the current study should be interpreted in light of its limitations, such as use of convenience sampling, instrumentation, and the effect of potential response biases. Future studies are needed to further investigate the cross-cultural metric invariance and item bias of BDI-II, STAI-Trait, and SCL-90-R-Somatization individually.

Streszczenie:
Believability of characters is an objective in literature, theater, animation, film, and other media. Virtual characters, believable as sharing their ethnic background with users, improve their perception of the character and, sometimes, even their task performance. Social scientists refer to this phenomenon as homophily—humans tend to associate and bond with similar others. Homophily based on ethnic similarity between humans and robots, however, has not previously been tested, in part due to the difficulties of endowing a robot with ethnicity. We tackle this task by attempting to avoid blatant labels of ethnicity such as clothing, accent, or ethnic appearance (although we control for the latter), and instead aim at evoking ethnicity via more subtle verbal and nonverbal behaviors. Until now, when designing ethnically-specific virtual agents, their behaviors have been typically borrowed from anthropological studies and cultural models. Other approaches collect corpora of human interactions in target contexts and select maximally distinctive behaviors for further implementation on a virtual character. In this thesis, we argue that both behaviors that signal differences between an anthropologist and the target ethnicity (rich points), as well as maximally distinctive behaviors between target ethnicities, may vary on their ability to evoke ethnic attribution. We address this discrepancy by performing an additional evaluation of the candidate behaviors on their salience as ethnic cues via online crowdsourcing. The most salient ethnic cues are then implemented on the robot for a study with colocated participants. This methodology has allowed us to design robot characters that elicit associations between the robot’s behaviors and ethnic attributions of the characters as native speakers of American English, or native speakers of Arabic speaking English as a foreign language, by members of both of these ethnic communities. Although we did not find evidence of ethnic homophily, we believe that the suggested pathway can be used to create robot characters with a higher degree of perceived similarity, and better chances of evoking homophily effect.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of cultural factors, such as self-construal, and social beliefs, on coping for U.S. and Chinese college students. Data from 325 U.S. and 321 Chinese college students were used for the analyses. It was found that independent self-construal, beliefs in reward for application and social complexity predicted task-oriented coping and self-regulation for both the U.S. and Chinese students. It was also found that beliefs in both fate control and social cynicism were associated with avoidance and emotion-focused coping in both groups. These two patterns of relationships were also observed across gender in each sample. Differences were also noted between the two countries. For the U.S. students, independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal contributed equally to task-oriented coping and self regulation, whereas for the Chinese students, only independent self-construal predicted these coping strategies. Moreover, religiosity was associated with emotion-focused coping and self regulation for the Chinese participants, while this pattern was not found in the U.S. student sample. The results of this study support the transactional model of coping. Consistent with previous findings, significant associations were found between three of the cultural variables (independent self-construal, beliefs in social complexity, and reward in application) and taskoriented coping. In contrast to prior research, the current study indicates that both independent and interdependent self-construal predicted task-oriented coping for the U.S. students. This contradicts Lam and Zane’s (2004) findings which suggested that these two dimensions of selfconstrual affect coping differently. Moreover, the current study found associations in the U.S. sample between self-construal, social beliefs, and coping dimensions which were originally identified in Chinese populations (i.e., self-regulation and help seeking). Similarly, the current research illuminated relationships in the Chinese sample between self-construal, social beliefs, and coping dimensions which were originally identified in the West (i.e., task-oriented and emotion-oriented coping). These findings suggest that current conceptualizations of coping in the West and China may not fully capture important aspects of coping in these two cultures. These results were discussed in relation to past findings in the literature, as well as the cultural contexts of the U.S. and China.

We all share similar innate emotions, but our cultural experiences nurture us to express them differently. The musical form "theme and variations" offer us a unique lens to uncover in each culture the relationships between the musical surface that touches us most directly, and the underlying structures that are more abstract. Variations are musical surfaces composed to explore the expressive potentials of the theme by transforming it along certain musical dimensions, while the theme itself can be seen as an intermediate pathway to the more abstract structures of a style. I approach cross-cultural transformation in music as a kind of cross-cultural variation, as the theme and variations tradition offers us a framework to explicitly consider which musical elements to stay fixed and which to vary. I propose to treat cross-cultural variation as a four-step process. First, the process of "melodic reduction" reduces the melodic surface of a theme to its underlying melodic progression. Second, "forward cross-cultural transformation" maps the uncovered progressions to those idiomatic in the cultural style that carries the variation. These cross-cultural mappings are approached by considering which of the melodic properties in the underlying progressions to preserve and which to transform. These properties include contour, scale-degree function, melodic formulae and tension. Third, "melodic elaboration" retrieves the melodic surfaces that possess the mapped melodic progressions. Fourth, "backward cross-cultural transformation" adjusts the melodic surface of the variation to strengthen its resemblance to the theme. My experimentation begins with the melodic variations on two historically related instruments, the Chinese zither, gu-zheng, and the Japanese zither, koto. Even though their repertoires evolved culturally to render very different melodic surfaces, it has been pointed out by ethnomusicologist Alan Thrasher that there is a high degree of similarity between their underlying structures. This enables a cross-cultural mapping at the structural level that ties together stylistically different melodic surfaces to exhibit a kind of crosscultural variation. I will conclude by briefly discussing the effectiveness of variation as an approach to cross-cultural transformation.

Streszczenie:
This doctoral thesis reports on a longitudinal, mixed methods investigation of the academic, psychological and sociocultural adjustment and adaptation of a multinational sample of international postgraduate students undertaking one-year taught MA degrees in the humanities and social sciences at a single British university (N = 225). Despite a considerable body of empirical research on student sojourner adjustment, longitudinal mixed methods studies are rare (Zhou and Todman, 2009). Thus, this study combined a quantitative questionnaire-based approach with a qualitative interview-based approach. The quantitative element investigated associations over time between a set of contributory factors (English language ability, prior overseas experience, pre-sojourn knowledge about the UK, autonomy in the decision to study abroad, intercultural competence, social contact, and social support) and a range of adjustment outcomes (academic achievement, psychological wellbeing, satisfaction with life, sociocultural adaptation). The qualitative element aimed to monitor students’ academic, psychological and sociocultural adjustment processes over time. A further research interest was in whether and, if so, how an academic sojourn abroad affects student sojourners’ intercultural competence. Data-collection took place over a period of 14 months and comprised three stages: in stage one (October) particpants completed a self-report survey; in stage two (October to June) a sample of 20 student volunteers participated in three waves of one-to-one interviews; in stage three (June) particpants completed a second self-report survey. Additionally, students’ academic grades were obtained from the host university (November). The study revealed a number of associations between ‘pre-sojourn’ factors, social connectedness, and students’ level of adaptation. Moreover, three distinct patterns for academic, psychological and sociocultural adjustment could be teased apart from the data though students experienced the sojourn in distinct and nuanced ways. Finally, the study provides indications for the malleable and dynamic nature of intercultural competence over time. Informed by the empirical findings and in response to the paucity of theoretical models of the international student sojourn, this study proposes a new conceptual model of student sojourner adjustment and adaptation. The suggested model shows some similarities with other models in the wider acculturation literature, but it also refines and extends these models in scope.

Problem: While the multinational teams consisting of members from different nationalities, backgrounds and cultures have advantages of diversity in the workplace, the differencesbetween team members can also pose the challenges. Our study focuses on InformationTechnology (IT) project teams in organizations located in Sweden. The rapid growth oftechnology and IT sector, increasing demand in IT professionals, and the knowledge ofwriting universal code allow people to work internationally regardless of citizenship. Therefore, the workforce in the IT sector is rapidly growing and diversifying — it ischaracterized by teams consisting of different nationalities. However, these differences incultures, languages and nationalities can complicate the communication processes betweenthe team members. Therefore, efficient cross-cultural communication within a team isessential for team collaboration and performance. Purpose: The study aims to find the significant issues in the process of adaptation to the newculturally diverse environment faced by immigrant professionals in IT project teams. Thestudy mainly focuses on an individual level, consequently expanding it to a collective level,as the related challenges refer to collaboration among the team members. Method: The study was conducted by interviewing immigrant professionals who have beenworking in IT project teams in the companies, located in Sweden. The participants belong tosix different nationalities and have worked in Sweden for approximately 2-8 years. They areall male aged between 30-33 years old. After the interviews, we can present findings, whichdemonstrate the points of similarity and difference. Conclusion: Technology, which is a significant factor in IT projects, constantly changes, andtherefore, IT project teams that work with innovation require high adaptability to explore newopportunities. That makes effective coordination and communication essential. In theculturally diverse team, managers should manage global mindset and cultural intelligence forindividuals to help team members in adaptation process. Cross-cultural training should beprovided to the migrant professionals in the team to avoid miscommunication based oncultural differences, hence overcoming challenges.

BOLSA NOTA 10
More than ever before, today one of the challenges for interaction design is the development of systems aiming to attend to the needs and expectations of people with different cultural and social backgrounds. The most widely used perspective in cross-cultural design is internationalization-localization. Internationalization is the process of separating the core functionality code from system s interface specifics (e.g. text language, measures, etc.). With localization, the interface is customized for a particular audience (through language translation, cultural markers and even technical features, for instance). The result of internationalization and localization is to conceal or neutralize cultural differences among different user communities and contexts of use. We are, however, interested in another situation: one where the design intent is virtually the opposite: to expose and explore cultural diversity. This is the case, for instance, when the purpose of the designed system is to stimulate users to make contact with a foreign culture. This thesis provides new knowledge to help HCI designers communicate their intent when they want to promote the users contact with cultural diversity. We present five cultural viewpoint metaphors (CVM) to support reasoning and decision-making about intercultural experience dimensions. The metaphors derive from empirical studies applying Semiotic Engineering to analyze and re-design cross-cultural systems interfaces. In order to investigate if and how CVM actually support HCI professionals/practitioners at design and evaluation time, we carried out an extensive case study to assess how CVM can be used in design and evaluation activities. We found that CVM played an important role in early design stages, helping designers to reason effectively about intercultural experiences while determining which cultural perspective they want to adopt. Furthermore, CVM features provided a rich epistemic grid where the consistency of design choices stands out more clearly.

Studies suggest that online trust is fostered by the perception of its antecedents, such as the ability of the online seller, his demonstrations of benevolence, the security system of his website, the presence of seals from external regulators and the perception of the competence of the sales system. These predictors of online trust can be perceived differently among consumers of different countries, influenced by cultural values related to their country. It is proposed that cultural dimensions, specifically individualism versus collectivism and uncertainty avoidance, may, even indirectly, influence the development of trust between consumers and online retailers. Using theoretical framework of Hofstede (2001) and others scholars (JARVENPAA; TRACKTINSKY, 1999; LEE; TURBAN, 2001; CHOI; GEISTFELD, 2004; AN; KIM, 2008 among others), the survey was conducted in Fortaleza (Brazil) and Montreal (Canada), between 2011 Q3 and 2012 Q1. A survey was implemented using scales validated by previous researches. A descriptive data analysis was carried, as well as the assembly of a multiple linear regression model with online trust as the dependent variable. The results indicated rejection of assumptions about the appreciation of the Brazilian public by characteristics of benevolence from online vendors compared to the Canadian public, as well as rejection of assumption appreciation of Canadians on Brazilian relating to the perception of the competence of sales systems and guarantees verified by third parties in online stores. The results also suggested the statement of the assumptions made about the predilection of Canadians over the Brazilians in relation to the perception of the abilities of online retailers as well as the statement of the assumptions that Brazilian indicative attribute more importance to security of online systems, compared to the Canadian public. The study shows that culture affects the perception of consumers in collectivist and low uncertainty avoidance on the security system sales, while acting on the perception of consumerâs individualistic profile and low uncertainty avoidance in relation to individual abilities of online retailers.

Darbo problema. Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of national culture on corporate greening with specific focus on motivations that drive companies to respond to environmental issues and strategies that companies develop in this regard. The existing literature indicates that the research on motivational and strategic aspects of corporate greening is limited from cultural perspective. Thus, a qualitative study of Swedish and Belarusian companies was conducted to illustrate what induces firms to go green and to describe what environmental strategies are implemented by them. The analysis of received empirical data was concentrated on aligning national culture features with the motivations for environmental initiatives and relevant elements of green strategies. The findings demonstrate the connection between national culture and environmental strategy through green motivations. Finally, some implications for further research as well as practitioners are presented.
