Streszczenie:
ABSTRACT This essay discusses a lost chapter in the history of the textual criticism of Euripides' Iphigenia at Aulis: G. Hermann's 1847 De Interpolationibus Euripideae Iphigeniae in Aulide. I argue that this work, like all textual criticisms in classics, aims to represent not the image of a lost original, but rather a singular image of textual history and formal change. This has consequences for the reading of critical texts in general, which do not aim to return us to the past but to provide a charter of history conceived as a temporally heterogeneous textual multiplicity.

Streszczenie:
Abstract A reasoned-eclectic approach to NT textual criticism examines both external and internal evidence when evaluating textual problems. This study explores the value of narrative criticism as another internal criterion when discussing intrinsic probabilities; specific attention is given to resolving the textual problem in John 1:34 ("Son of God” versus “God’s chosen one"). After examining the external evidence, the discussion turns to the motif of incomplete understanding that emerges over the first four days of the narrative proper (1:19–51). Against the backdrop of the Johannine prologue (1:1–18), which provides the literary audience with a complete description of Jesus’ identity, this pattern of misunderstanding suggests that “God’s chosen one"—an otherwise unattested term in the Fourth Gospel—is to be preferred over the “Son of God” reading.

Abstract Two reading traditions are reflected in the ancient witnesses to Nahum 2:14, which can be referred to as ‘masculine’ (4Q169) and ‘feminine’ (MT, TJon, P), depending on the implied referent of the suffixes in this verse. It is argued in this contribution that the textual history of Nahum 2:14 and the origins of these two reading traditions can be explained from the relationship between the Hebrew words רכב and רב, which presumably go back to a common source *רכבכה. This can be taken as evidence that the masculine reading of Nahum 2:14 is the more original one, whereas the feminine reading is the outcome of textual corruption.

Streszczenie:
This paper is a close textual analysis of what learning is in the context of learning spaces. The aim is for critical rhetorical discourse to what scholars say or write about a topic and the deeper meaning of their words. The close textual analysis is about the influence of learning spaces to have significant experiences for the network generation born in an era of information technology. The paper is to introduce a reason to pay close attention to the process of textual analysis. The process with its complexity reveals the creative density of rhetoric as well as the reason behind the words. Our compass point toward understanding what learning truly means within the context of learning spaces. But this journey is no mere academic exercise; it is a call to engage in critical rhetorical discourse, where ink meets parchment, and ideas crystalize. This study reveals how symbolic action, form and content, context, and creative concentration function within the artifact. The claim is that proposition for close textual analysis is to prepare the listener to listen and hear the importance of rhetorical discourse is taking place, as well as understanding of words to gain meaning to rhetorical discourse and critical thinking.

This work through the establishment of the sources used on the paper titled Memória Histórica da Capitania de São Paulo, seeks to analyze the textual transformation in the passage from one text to another. The Memória Histórica, of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu, higher official of the Secretariat of the Province of São Paulo, is an eighteenth century manuscript deposited in the Archive of the State of São Paulo, composed mainly of texts of the eighteenth century texts written by historians, as Pedro Taques de Almeida Paes Leme Leme História da Capitania de São Vicente; Notícia Histórica da Expulsão dos Jesuítas do Colégio de São Paulo e Nobiliarquia Paulistana Histórica e Genealógica and Frei Gaspar da Madre de Deus Memórias para a História da Capitania de São Vicente. Despite the confirmation of the full reproduction of many sections and paragraphs of such works, the manuscript is not configured as a literal copy of his sources, since Manuel Cardoso intentionally intervened in the texts which served as a model for the construction of his Memória, implementing to this end, a series of changes that gave rise to a new text. In the early twentieth century, after the acquisition of this works by the State Archives, historians as Capistrano de Abreu and, especially, Afonso dEscragnolle Taunay, raised the question of its authenticity, supported by the notions of authorship and intellectual property. As a consequence, Memória Histórica was judged as a case of plagiarism, without, however, a discussion on the motivation and purpose of textual appropriation, the relationship of that text with their sources and without consideration for writing and copying practices during the period when they were constructed, being held. So, based essentially on theoretical and methodological principles, such as Critical Sources, Philology and Textual Criticism, this research focuses on the examination and collation of the sources from Memória Histórica, and it searches to establish the categorization of filtering mechanisms for these sources, so that it is possible to reveal which variants of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu in the writing process of his work and to what extent was his was intentional intervention.

Streszczenie:
This thesis provides a critical edition of the longest extant version of the medieval Irish text Tochmarc Ferbe ('The Wooing of Ferb'), accompanied by translation, textual notes and literary commentary. Tochmarc Ferbe is found in two manuscripts, the Book of Leinster (LL) and Egerton 1782. This comprises three versions of the text: a short prose account in Egerton 1782, and a long prosimetric account in LL, followed in the same manuscript by a poetic account. After a preliminary analysis of the relationship between these three versions, the edited text of the long prosimetric version (LL-prose) is presented, alongside a facing-page translation. Issues arising from the text, in terms of interpretational difficulties, literary features and metrical analysis of the poems, are discussed in the form of textual notes. A particular focus is the prevalence of textual correspondences between Tochmarc Ferbe and other medieval Irish tales, many of which are identified as direct textual borrowings by the author of this text. The thesis concludes with a literary commentary focusing on the role of women in the LL-prose version. It is argued that its depictions of a wide range of female characters challenge traditional assumptions about medieval Irish attitudes towards women, which tend to focus on their supposed passivity and negativity. The portrayals of two female characters are singled out as especially noteworthy. Queen Medb, frequently viewed as the archetypal expression of negative attitudes towards power-wielding women in medieval Irish literature, is shown to receive a positive depiction in this text. Meanwhile, the main female protagonist Ferb is characterised by her use of speech, which dominates the text in a manner almost unparalleled in medieval Irish literature. It is argued that she subverts the usually passive role of lamenter by channelling her grief into an active force, offering an alternative model of positive female action.

Streszczenie:
The aim of textual criticism is to recover the original text of the New Testament. By studying and comparing the many extant manuscripts it is hoped to discover which of them, or the variants they contain, arc closest to the original Text In choosing between the many variant readings, New Testament scholars developed the method of grouping manuscripts into different fom1s of text which fit the pattern of their variants. In contrast to this approach, J. W. Burgan propounded a method later identified as "The Majority Text" approach. This focuses on the Byzantine textual tradition, and assumes that its numerical preponderance is prima facie evidence of a superior text. With the lapse of time, and due to the results of the many studies made of newly discovered papyri, there is growing uncertainty as to the value of the traditional groupings of manuscripts. Both current research and contemporary methods of criticism may indicate that F. J. A. Hort's description of the Byzantine text (Majority text), as late, inferior, and recensional, needs to be reevaluated. There is a loss of methodological consensus; differing ways have emerged of estimating the many variant readings of the New Testament. This depends on whether the critic relies on the supposed history of the text, or prefers to focus on stylistic and philological issues. The need is to find a text-critical method acceptable to all. Recent debate between scholars advocating different approaches to textual criticism has addressed several key theoretical issues, whose outcome determines whether the Majority text method is a viable alternative to other approaches. This study responds to the recommendation of Kurt Aland (1987) that interested students should test the Majority text method, by considering several texts from the Gospels which arc relegated to the critical apparatus of the Greek New Testament (UBS4). This is done by employing Burgan's "Seven Notes of Truth", and the results are compared with Aland's conclusions, as well as with the conclusions of other critics who follow similar or varying methods. Not surprisingly it was found that, of all the verses examined on the basis of the Majority text method, the textual decisions were markedly different from those made by Aland and the UBS editors. In contrast, the Majority text conclusions for half of the verses considered were in agreement with those reached by the more radical approach of G. D. Kilpatrick who was willing to evaluate some Byzantine variants as good readings. The differing approaches indicate that New Testament textual criticism is at a methodological impasse. II is hoped that a clearer understanding of the history of the text will provide an objective basis for making sound textual choices. This quest must include a more exact method of patristic studies to enable the critic to place the Text more accurately in the context of its time and location. If a consensus emerged which accepted that Hart's views of the origins of the Byzantine text are no longer tenable, this may encourage scholars to study Burgon's work more closely, and thereby assess the value of the Majority text method.

Streszczenie:
This thesis considers the concept of information as meaning through the following research question: how can we work critically with a tradition of information systems development methodologies? Motivation for this derives from the way 'hard' methodologies have traditionally regarded information as structured data. This neglects 'soft' concerns for how people attribute meaning to data through a process of 'inward-forming' as they use data to make sense of a situation. The research is potentially important insofar as it considers how viewing information as structured data may have confused attempts at theory building. That is, if information is conceived of as structured data, then this may be reflected in how we conceive of a methodology's theory with the result that the meaning of a methodology becomes guaranteed by the theory. This gives rise to a prescriptive tradition of theory that is potentially misleading because it neglects the personal skills of those who use methodologies. This is investigated through a descriptive/interpretive research approach using a poststructuralist textual analysis of concepts in the theory and practice of a methodology. While structuralism views meaning as something static contained 'within' a text that readers passively consume, poststructuralism emphasises how readers actively derive meaning through their interactions with texts. In addressing the hermeneutic and deconstructive aspects of poststructuralism, the research draws on the philosophers, Paul Ricoeur and Jacques Derrida respectively. With regard to Derrida, deconstruction is used to argue how the main position asserted by a methodology's texts is undermined by elements within the texts themselves. This critically questions the foundations on which a methodology claims to be based. The general purpose is to build theories of methodology that address information as meaning. To this end, the thesis centres on four areas of investigation: it considers themes associated with linking 'hard' and 'soft' methodologies, investigates a specific methodology that links such approaches, raises a critical element by deconstructing concepts in inquiry, and considers implications for the relationship between theory and practice of methodology. The area of application for the research was Multiview Methodology (MVM) because it combines a range of existing methodologies that reflect 'soft' concerns for how people interpret meaning as well as a traditional 'hard' focus on structuring data for use on computerised information systems. The deconstructive approach used in this research is not yet common in the field of information systems. As such, this research is intended to contribute towards new critical strategies that challenge methodologies as conceptual systems in their own right as distinct from strategies that challenge their authors. Focusing on the conceptual implications of methodologies rather than their authors' intentions resulted in four main outcomes: a conception of paradigm as network, which refers to a shared conception of meaning, though commitments to beliefs in particular models vary from heuristic to ontological; a Trojan horse phenomenon, which refers to tendencies to reiterate limitations criticised in others; constraints of traditional print media insofar as these are associated with linear and static descriptions of methodology in use; and methodology as metaphor, which refers to the process through which we understand the unfamiliar in terms of the familiar thereby creating new concepts while still retaining aspects of our past experiences.

Streszczenie:
Human labeling of data can be very time-consuming and expensive, yet, in many cases it is critical for the success of the learning process. In order to minimize human labeling efforts, we propose a novel active learning solution that does not rely on existing sources of unlabeled data. It uses a small amount of labeled data as the core set for the synthesis of useful membership queries (MQs) — unlabeled instances generated by an algorithm for human labeling. Our solution uses modification operators, functions that modify instances to some extent. We apply the operators on a small set of instances (core set), creating a set of new membership queries. Using this framework, we look at the instance space as a search space and apply search algorithms in order to generate new examples highly relevant to the learner. We implement this framework in the textual domain and test it on several text classification tasks and show improved classifier performance as more MQs are labeled and incorporated into the training set. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on membership queries in the textual domain.

Popularity prediction of user generated textual content is critical for prioritizing information in the web, which alleviates heavy information overload for ordinary readers. Most previous studies model each content instance separately for prediction and thus overlook the sequential correlations between instances of a specific user. In this paper, we go deeper into this problem based on the two observations for each user, i.e., sequential content correlation and sequential popularity correlation. We propose a novel deep sequential model called User Memory-augmented recurrent Attention Network (UMAN). This model encodes the two correlations by updating external user memories which is further leveraged for target text representation learning and popularity prediction. The experimental results on several real-world datasets validate the benefits of considering these correlations and demonstrate UMAN achieves best performance among several strong competitors.

Risk classification plays a critical role in domains such as finance, insurance, and healthcare. However, identifying risks can be a challenging task when dealing with different types of data. In this paper, we present a novel approach using the Multimodal Transformer for risk classification, and we investigate the use of data augmentation for risk data through automated retrieval of news articles. We achieved this through keyword extraction based on the title and descriptions of risks and using various selection metrics. We evaluate our approach using a real-world dataset containing numerical, categorical, and textual data. Our results demonstrate that the use of the Multimodal Transformer for risk classification outperforms other models that only utilize textual data. We show that the inclusion of numerical and categorical data improves the performance of the model, particularly for risks that are difficult to classify based on textual data alone. Additionally, our research indicates that the utilization of data augmentation techniques yields enhanced performance outcomes in models. This methodology presents a promising avenue for enterprises to effectively mitigate risks and make well-informed decisions.

The immediacy of the climate crisis has necessitated a paradigm shift away from endless cycles of demolition and reconstruction towards more ecologically and socially sustainable architectural practices that focus on the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. Many recent approaches have tended however to concentrate on the technical, material and economic aspects of reuse at the expense of the equally important social and cultural aspects. This paper discusses a recently-launched project at Hasselt University in Belgium that attempts to address this myopic imbalance through the development of a conceptual framework that firmly repositions adaptive reuse as a transdisciplinary practice, engaged not only with ‘hard’ values like technical and material concerns, but also ‘soft’ values encompassing the integral cultural and social aspects that give places meaning. The project sets out to curate an anthology of textual and non-textual sources from both within and beyond the discipline of architecture that can contribute to the emerging theory of adaptive reuse and situate it within wider contemporary discourses. This collected body of knowledge is then examined through the critical lens of translation, investigating the acts of translation involved in reconciling different traces, time periods, interventions and actors, as a way to synthesise the various meanings uncovered and suggest how the intimate and reciprocal relay between theory, practice and education might be strengthened.Through an exploration of anthologising as a critical practice and translation as a critical lens, the paper highlights how proposing a theoretical foundation for adaptive reuse can help reinforce its cross-cutting nature as a cultural activity, at the same time emphasising the critical role it has to play in any future sustainable development.

This study applies Critical Stylistics in analyzing aggressive speech by adapting Jeffries (2010) model as the analytical framework within Toni Morrison's novel, The Bluest Eye. Due to the fact that aggression is a critical social behavior, it is studied in terms of linguistics, pragmatics, and even critical pragmatics however it is not tackled from a critical stylistic perspective. Thus, the study under scrutiny deals with aggression as a domestic and social behavior from a CS perspective aspiring to answer the questions of: 1. how aggressive language is displayed in parents-children communication through a critical stylistic standpoint? 2. What are the stylistic tools used in the novel to express the ideological effects? The study aims to investigate the linguistic markers of aggressiveness, contextual significance, and their influence on character development and interactions. It is hypothesized that: 1. Aggressive language has a major role in shaping character dynamics and the narrative. 2. Aggressive language is realized via two levels: ideational level and textual level to reveal the ideological effects. The study contributes to a nuanced understanding of language's portrayal of aggression and its implications in the context of the novel. It also reveals that aggression can be seen as a critical social behavior practiced by the aggressor for a particular reason such as want, desire, need or because of the psychological state of the aggressor

Text critical study of the early printed Cyrillic Tetraevangelions made it possible to divide these Gospel books into several textological groups. One of them, to which eleven Middle-Bulgarian and Serbian editions from XVIth c. belong, was also divided into two textual subgroups: Gospel of hieromonk Macarie (1512) and Gospel of deacon Coresi (1562). The goal of presentation is text critic analysis of the Church-Slavonic translation of the Gospel preserved in Slavonic-Romanian Early printed Tetraevangelion issued 1551–53 by Philip the Moldavian in Brașov. In the study, based on the three fragments from the Gos-pel of Matthew (3,17 – 8,21,13,44 – 15,11 and 26,1 – 27,61), all early printed Cyrillic Tetraevangelions issued Middle-Bulgarian, Serbian and East-Slavonic redactions from XVIthc. will be explored.

Abstract Due to the impact of globalization, companies have extended their borders across nations to launch products more competitively. However, globalization affects various uncertainties and risks that may limit the performance of supply chains. Research indicates that models that incorporate uncertainties and risks will help to improve the resilience of global supply chains. In the era of technology, we experience the abundance of textual data from various web-media resources related to companies, which can be deployed to understand the impact of risks on the chain. Accordingly, this study aims to utilize textual data collected from news articles and earnings call transcripts to assess the vulnerability of the suppliers and the chain. Among many, we considered supply chain resource limits as a subcomponent of vulnerability and collected textual data associated with its sub-factors. Then, we proposed an integrated factor analysis and Analytical Network Process (ANP) method to model the company’s supply chain resource limits index. Specifically, factor analysis was used to determine the latent constructs of the variables that are grouped under resource limits and their correlations. This latent construct and correlations were then applied as the interdependencies among variables in the ANP to discover the final importance weights of the variables in terms of supply chain resource limits. The results of the study showed that the shortages of capacity, components, and energy supply are the most critical sub-factors. The company’s supply chain resource limits index (SCRLI) can be further calculated to assist decision-makers of an enterprise in supply chain configuration design, and improve the supply chain resilience.

Open innovation often enjoys large quantities of submitted content. Yet the need to effectively process such large quantities of content impede the widespread use of open innovation in practice. This article presents an exploration of needs-based open innovation using state-of-the art natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to address existing limitations of exploiting large amounts of incoming data. The Semantic Textual Similarity (STS) algorithms were specifically developed to compare sentence-length text passages and were used to rate the semantic similarity of pairs of text sentences submitted by users of a custom open innovation platform. A total of 341 unique users submitted 1,735 textual problem statements or unmet needs relating to multiple topics: cooking, cleaning, and travel. Scores of equivalence generated by a consensus of ten human evaluators for a subset of the needs provided a benchmark for similarity comparison. The semantic analysis allowed for rapid (1 day per topic), automated screening of redundancy to facilitate identification of quality submissions. In addition, a series of permutation analyses provided critical crowd characteristics for the rates of redundant entries as crowd size increases. The results identify top modern STS algorithms for needfinding. These predicted similarity with Pearson correlations of up to .85 when trained using need-based training data and up to .83 when trained using generalized data. Rates of duplication varied with crowd size and may be approximately linear or appear asymptotic depending on the degree of similarity used as a cutoff. Semantic algorithm performance has shown rapid improvements in recent years. Potential applications to screen duplicates and also to screen highly unique sentences for rapid exploration of a space are discussed.

The paper reports the results of the critical evaluation of the quantitative approach to the distinction between inflection and word formation through the analysis of the trends in the frequency of word forms. The possibility of such analysis is provided by voluminous corpus data and tools for visualizing these trends. Both theoretical foundations of the proposed approach and the results of the pilot study of its applying to Russian aspectual triplets were considered. These cast doubt on the validity of distinguishing between inflection and word formation based on the trends in the frequency of word forms as a reliable tool used to reveal the unity or difference of lexical semantics and thus to define textual units as belonging to the same or different language units.

This study employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to quantitatively analyze the descriptions of male and female body parts in Portuguese literature. We investigate these descriptions' frequency, specificity, and objectification by examining a corpus of literary works. The results indicate distinct differences in how male and female bodies are portrayed, revealing evidence of gender bias in the choice of specific descriptors for body parts. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding gender representation in literature, shedding light on the potential biases in textual descriptions. Furthermore, it underscores the significance of NLP techniques in uncovering patterns within literary texts, providing valuable insights into data mining. Through this analysis, we deepen our understanding of gender dynamics within literary works and foster critical discussions on representation in literature.

Construction inspection is a critical component of INDOT’s quality assurance (QA) program. Upon receiving an inspection notice/assignment, INDOT inspectors review the plans and specifications to identify the construction quality requirements and conduct their inspections accordingly. This manual approach to gathering inspection requirements from textual documents is time-consuming, subjective, and error-prone. This project addresses this critical issue by developing an inspection requirements database along with a set of tools to automatically gather the inspection requirements and provide field crews with customized construction checklists during the inspection with the specifics of what to check, when to check, and how to check, as well as the risks and the actions to take when noncompliance is encountered. This newly developed toolset eliminates the manual effort required to acquire construction requirements, which will enhance the efficiency of the construction inspection process at INDOT. It also enables the incorporation of field-collected data to automate future compliance checking and facilitate construction documentation.

Streszczenie:
In the 21st century, business engagements are becoming increasingly global, and global teams are now an established form of organising work in multinational organisations. As a result, managing cultural diver-sity within a global team has become an essential part of ensuring motivation, creativity, innovation and efficiency in today’s business world.Global teams are typically composed of a diversity of experiences, frames of references, competencies, information and, not least, cultural backgrounds. As such, they hold a unique potential for delivering high performance in terms of innovative and creative approaches to global management tasks; however, in-stead of focusing on the potentials of cultural diversity, practitioners and studies of global teams tend to approach cultural diversity as a barrier to team success. This study explores some of the barriers that cultural diversity poses but also discusses its potential to leverage high performance in a global context. Our study highlights the importance of how team leaders and team members perceive ‘culture’ as both a concept and a social practice. We take issue with a notion of culture as a relatively fixed and homogeneous set of values, norms and attitudes shared by people of national communities; it is such a notion of culture that tends to underlie understandings that highlight the irreconcilability of cultural differences.Applying a more dynamic and context-dependent approach to culture as a meaning system that people negotiate and use to interpret the world, this study explores how global leadership teams can best reap the benefits of cultural diversity in relation to specific challenging areas of intercultural team work, such as leadership style, decision making, relationship building, strategy process, and communication styles. Based on a close textual interpretation of 31 semi-structured interviews with members of global leader-ship teams in eight Danish-owned global companies, our study identified different discourses and per-ceptions of culture and cultural diversity. For leaders of the global leadership teams (Danish/European) and other European team members, three understandings of cultural diversity in their global teams were prominent:1)Cultural diversity was not an issue2)Cultural diversity was acknowledged as mainly a liability. Diversities were expressed through adifference in national cultures and could typically be subsumed under a relatively fixed numberof invariable and distinct characteristics.3)Cultural diversity was an asset and expressions of culture had to be observed in the situationand could not simply be derived from prior understandings of cultural differences.A clear result of our study was that those leaders of global teams who drew on discourses of the Asian ‘Other’ adherred to the first two understandings of cultural diversity and preferred leadership styles that were either patriarchal or self-defined as ‘Scandinavian’. Whereas those leaders who drew on discourses of culture as dynamic and negotiated social practices adhered to the third understanding of cultural di-versity and preferred a differentiated and analytical approach to leading their teams. We also focused on the perceptions of team members with a background in the country in which the global teams were co-located. These ‘local’ team members expressed a nuanced and multifaceted perspective on their own cultural background, the national culture of the company, and their own position within the team, which enabled them to easily navigate between essentialist perceptions of culture while maintain-ing a critical stance on the existing cultural hegemonies. They recognised the value of their local knowledge and language proficiency, but, for those local members in teams with a negative or essentialist view of cultural diversity, it was difficult to obtain recognition of their cultural styles and specific, non-local competences. 3Our study suggeststhat the way global team members perceive culture, based on dominant societal dis-courses of culture, significantly affects the understandings of roles and positions in global leadership teams. We found that discourses on culture were used to explain differences and similarities between team members, which profoundly affected the social practicesand dynamics of the global team. We con-clude that only global teams with team leaders who are highly aware of the multiple perspectives at play in different contexts within the team hold the capacity to be alert to cultural diversity and to demonstrate agility in leveraging differences and similarities into inclusive and dynamic team practices.

Streszczenie:
In tertiary contexts where adults study writing for future academic purposes, teaching and learning via portfolio provides them with multiple opportunities to create and recreate texts characteristic of their future and imagined discourse communities. This paper discusses the value of portfolios as vehicles for rehearsing membership of what Benedict Anderson (1983) called “imagined communities”, a concept applied by such scholars as Yasuko Kanno and Bonny Norton (2003). Portfolios can achieve this process of apprenticeship to a specialist discourse through reproducing texts similar to the authentic artefacts of those discourse communities (Flowerdew, 2000; Hyland, 2003, 2004). We consider the value of multi-drafting, where learners reflect on the learning of a text type characteristic of the students’ future imagined community. We explore Hamp-Lyons and Condon’s belief (2000) that portfolios “critically engage students and teachers in continual discussion, analysis and evaluation of their processes and progress as writers, as reflected in multiple written products” (p.15). Introduced by a discussion of how theoretical perspectives on learning and assessing writing engage with portfolio production, the study presented here outlines a situated pedagogical approach, where students report on their improvement across three portfolio drafts and assess their learning reflectively. A multicultural group of 41 learners enrolled in the degree-level course Academic Writing [AW] at a tertiary institution in New Zealand took part in a study reflecting on this approach to building awareness of one’s own writing. Focus group interviews with a researcher at the final stage of the programme provided qualitative data, which was transcribed and analysed using textual analysis methods (Ryan and Bernard, 2003). Students identified a range of advantages of teaching and learning AW by portfolio. One of the identified benefits was that the selected text types within the programme were perceived as useful to the students’ immediate futures. This careful choice of target genre was reflected in the overall value of the programme for these learners.
