Streszczenie:
This thesis looks at various problems relating to the value distribution of certain discrete potentials. Chapter 1 - Background material is introduced, the motivation behind this work is explained, and existing results in the area are presented. Chapter 2 - By using a method based on a result of Cartan, the existence of zeros is shown for potentials in both the complex plane and real space. Chapter 3 - Using an argument of Hayman, we expand on an established result concerning these potentials in the complex plane. We also look at the consequences of a spacing of the poles. Chapter 4 - We extend the potentials in the complex plane to a generalised form, and establish some value distribution results. Chapter 5 - We examine the derivative of the basic potentials, and explore the assumption that it takes the value zero only finitely often. Chapter 6 - We look at a new potential in real space which has advantages over the previously examined ones. These advantages are explained. Appendix - The results of computer simulations relating to these problems are presented here, along with the programs used.

A novel method of predicting the multiaxial high-cycle fatigue strength of metallic components is proposed and verified for various steel, aluminium and cast iron alloys. The proposed Fatigue Damage Function shows superior multiaxial fatigue strength prediction compared to the established methods of Gough and Pollard, McDiarmid and Carpinteri and Spagnoli. A new material property, the Normal Stress Sensitivity Factor, is also introduced and its applicability is verified according to published test results of sixteen different structural alloys. To highlight the effectiveness of the proposed criterion, for industrial applications, a case study has been conducted on heat-treated and not heat-treated automatic transmission output shafts.

Streszczenie:
When a structure with an in-plane discontinuous frame is used, a discontinuous load path is formed due to the irregularity. This is continuous load path can lead to the failure of certain elements and the structure as a whole when the structure is exposed to lateral loading. In this study, an in-plane discontinuous frame structure is exposed to gravity as well as lateral loading due to which a discontinuous load path is formed. Due to the discontinuous load path, higher value of axial load is developed on a beam which is generally designed considering it as a flexural member. The main objective of this thesis is to determine if the beam can be designated as the critical member in the in-plane discontinuous frame and the comparison of the critical element with the corresponding element in a frame that has no structural irregularities. The objective is also to design the critical member considering it as a beam-column element considering the combined effect of bending and compression.

Streszczenie:
The linear stability of high speed-viscous plane Couette and Couette-Poiseuille flows are investigated numerically. The conservation equations along with Sutherland&

s viscosity law are studied using a second-order finite difference scheme. The basic velocity and temperature distributions are perturbed by a small-amplitude normalmode disturbance. The small-amplitude disturbance equations are solved numerically using a global method using QZ algorithm to find all the eigenvalues at finite Reynolds numbers, and the incompressible limit of these equations is investigated for Couette-Poiseuille flow. It is found that the instabilities occur, although the corresponding growth rates are often small. Two families of wave modes, Mode I (odd modes) and Mode II (even modes), were found to be unstable at finite Reynolds numbers, where Mode II is the dominant instability among the unstable modes for plane Couette flow. The most unstable mode for plane Couette &
#65533
Poiseuille flow is Mode 0, which is not a member of the even modes. Both even and odd modes are acoustic modes created by acoustic reflections between a will and a relative sonic line. The necessary condition for the existence of such acoustic wave modes is that there is a region of locally supersonic mean flow relative to the phase speed of the instability wave. The effects of viscosity and compressibility are also investigated and shown to have a stabilizing role in all cases studied. Couette-Poiseuille flow stability is investigated in case of a choked channel flow, where the maximum velocity in the channel corresponds to sonic velocity. Neutral stability contours were obtained for this flow as a function if the wave number,Reynolds number and the upper wall Mach number. The critical Reynolds number is found as 5718.338 for an upper wall Mach number of 0.0001, corresponding to the fully Poiseuille case.

Experimentshave been done on single-crystal nickel-base superalloy specimens in order toinvestigate the mechanical and fatigue behaviour of the material. The constitutivebehaviour has been modelled and veried by FE-simulations of the experiments.Furthermore, the microstructural degradation during long-time ageing has been investigatedwith respect to the material's yield limit. The eect has been includedin the constitutive model by lowering the resulting yield limit. Moreover, the fatiguecrack initiation of a component has been analysed and modelled by using acritical plane approach in combination with a critical distance method. Finally, asan application, the derived single-crystal model was applied to all the individualgrains in a coarse grained specimen to predict the dispersion in fatigue crack initiationlife depending on random grain distributions. This thesis is divided into three parts. In the rst part the theoretical framework, based upon continuum mechanics, crystal plasticity, the critical plane approachand the critical distance method, is derived. This framework is then used in thesecond part, which consists of six included papers. Finally, in the third part, detailsof the used numerical procedures are presented.

Streszczenie:
Fatigue, or failure of material due to repeated cyclic loading, is one of the most common causes of mechanical failures. The risk of fatigue in a load carrying component is often lowered by adding material, thereby reducing stresses. This increases the component weight, reducing the performance of the component and increasing its manufacturing cost. There is thus a need to design components to be as light as possible, while keeping the risk of fatigue at a low enough level, i.e. there is a need for optimization of the component subject to fatigue constraints.  This thesis deals with design against fatigue using topology optimization, which is a form of structural optimization where an optimal design is sought by using mathematical programming to decide which parts of a design domain should be filled with material, and which should not.  To predict fatigue, accurate representation of the geometry and accurate stress computation are of utmost importance. In this thesis, methods for imposing constraints such as minimum inner radii and minimum member sizes in the form of four new density filters are proposed. The filters are able to generate a very sharp representation of the structural boundary. A method for improving the accuracy of stress results at the structural boundary is also proposed, based on extrapolation of results from the interior of the structure. The method gives more accurate stresses, which affects the resulting structures when solving optimization problems.  A formulation for fatigue constraints in topology optimization is proposed, based on the weakest link integral. The formulation avoids the problem of choosing between accurate but costly local constraints, and efficient but approximate aggregated constraints, and gives a theoretical motivation for using expressions similar to the p-norm of stresses.  For verifying calculations of the fatigue probability of an optimized structure, critical plane criteria are commonly used. A new method for evaluating such criteria using optimization methods is proposed, and is proved to give results within a user given error tolerance. It is shown that compared to existing brute force methods, the proposed method evaluates significantly fewer planes in the search of the critical one.

Marketing Planning is the most prescribed tool for "doing" marketing. The marketing plan's implementation schedule provides a roadmap for accomplishing a firm's stated marketing objectives. For over three decades researchers have investigated planning's link to firm performance. The consensus has been that they do improve performance although there is little empirical evidence to suggest how implementation of those plans is related. Environmental turbulence, new information and failed implementation cause firms to act outside of the planning framework. Improvisation is the contemporaneous creation and execution of an action. The extent to which firms act improvisationally has been studied, but to date there has been no empirical investigation that exposes the different types of post plan improvisations of strategic marketing plans that exist. This dissertation attempts to identify the different types of post plan improvisations (PPI) used in marketing. Using the Critical Incident Technique, 384 incidents of PPI were gathered from marketing planners and then used to create categories and systematically classify each incident. Four primary categories of causes of deviations, six categories of deviations and four categories of outcomes emerged from the data. The results provide a foundation for a theoretical model of the types of post plan improvisations in practice. This will allow further research into contextual differences that could help managers decide when to improvise and when to follow their plan. Further, by exposing the useful application of the CIT method in a new field, additional researchers might begin to use the technique to update and more deeply understand other marketing phenomenon.

A theoretical-experimental methodology was developped in this work for evaluating the performance of cogeneration plants, including the data comparison with manufacturer specifications, uncertainty analysis of main parameters and thermoeconomic analysis. As a result, this work aims the establishment of an optimized criteriumfor especifying and operating cogeneration systems. Two existing cogeneration plants were analyzed in this work, (a) Companhia Cervejaria Brahma, located in Campo Grande, RJ, consisting of three 4,90 MW gas turbine generators, three heat recovery boilers, including after burners, with a nominal capacity of 36000 kg/h of steam, each one, and (b) Parque Gráfico do InfoGlobo, located in the Wshington Luis Highway, Duque de Caxias, RJ, consisting of two 2,90 MW reciprocating engine gas generators, two heat recovery boilers and 800 TR absorption chiller. A chemical reaction mass balance methodologywas used in the BRAHMA plant. It uses the measurement of pollutant emissions and natural gas compositionfor estimating the turbine inlet air and exhaust gas flow rates, which are important for evaluating the plant performance. Thei methodology was preferred due to the fact that no air and exhaust gas flow rate measurement instrument was installed in the plant, which is usually the case. This methodology was also used for evaluating the performance of heat recovery boilers with after burners. An uncertainty analysis procedure was developed and used to identify operational problems like fouling, reducing the effectiveness of the heat recovery economizer. One of the main results of this work was the fact that as least a 6 percentual point difference between the gas and the steam sides was measured for the overall fuel chemical energy usage, demonstrating the need of a more careful analysis of component performance for designing and specifying a cogeneration plant, which takes into account the heat losses. Thus, one suggests that the heat transfer to the water be specified, rather than the one from the hot gases. A technical-economic analysis of the plant was carried on, and its cost-benefit determined. Due to difficuties in obtaining experimental data, a simulation procedure had to be used for analyzing the performance of the InfoGlobo plant. Design data for several equipments were used in the calculations, supposing that they do not vary too much with ambient conditions. Thus, the uncertainty analysis was not carried on. The used methodology identified the fact that the boiler feedwater pump was not operating in the design point. In a general way, it was observed that the overall fuel chemical energy usage varies too much along the day, indicating a mismatching between load and energy supply. Finally, as a tool for the plant analysis, a computational model was developped for estimating the cogeneration plant component parameters, to be used for design purposes. Partial load operation of the turbines is contemplated in this model, as a function of ambient conditions.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Goverment of the Republic of Namibia soon after independence, recognised its cardinal national responsibility to change the orientation of the nation's economy from one of exporting raw materials and importing final-use products to in-country production of goods based on the country's resource endowment. One productive sector for which explicit and far-reaching guiding policies, strategies and programmes have been developed and instituted from the beginning is the promotion of highly competitive industries with special emphasis on SMEs as a major pathway to progressive and sustainable industrialisation and employment and the simultaneous development of entrepreneurial culture. In recognition of the critical role the SMEs can play in the socia-economic development and economic diversification of the country, the Government of Namibia through its Ministry of Trade and Industry has put in place policies and programmes, specifically for the development of SMEs. To this end, the Ministry of Trade and Industry realised that the lack of bankable business plans limited entrepreneurs' access to finance and this posed the biggest challenges to the growth of the SME sector in the country. This has been conceived as a daunting factor and stems from the reality that entrepreneurs cannot provide bankable business plans to back up their applications. Given the prevailing condition, the Government of Namibia initiated the MSME Feasibility Studies and Business Plan Support programme ~ specifically geared to assist the SME sector with bankable business plans in order to induce financial institutions to provide loans to entrepreneurs with viable project ideas and prospects for success. The objective of the study is to explore the extent to which this support programme has facilitated the access to finance by SMEs and the creation of sustainable businesses. The findings of the study have established that worldwide some of the developed and developing countries initiated and implemented similar govemmental programmes in the form of subsidies to the services rendered by third parties to SMEs in business-plan formulations and related advisory services.

Despite increased knowledge of the causes and consequences of climate change, federal politics has prevented a comprehensive, nationwide effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This inaction at the federal level has prompted local governments to take the lead on reducing greenhouse gas emissions through Climate Action Plans (CAP). This thesis explores the environmental discourses that are at work in the CAP adoption process of three cities that historically vote for democratic candidates and republican candidates, respectively, in federal elections. As a qualitative study, my inquiry evaluates the CAP adoption process through an analysis of public officials' statements, public comments and editorials, and CAP content. John Dryzek's eight environmental discourses are applied to highlight the discourses that are reflected in the data obtained from public officials, the public, and policy outcomes. This examination reveals opportunities of bipartisan agreement and provides insights for governments to move past the politics of climate change.

As education evolves in the 21st century and students learn to develop knowledge from the ground up, educators step into the role of facilitator. Critical to this paradigm shift is a connection with places that develops knowledge from local experiences into broad global understanding. This thesis explores the literature on how people develop a connection with place, the importance of learning about the world through appropriate developmental stages, and the relevance of place-based education as part of learning in the 21st century. Through qualitative research methods—including surveys, interviews, and focus groups—this thesis demonstrates the ways in which educators in an elementary school in Albuquerque, New Mexico develop a personal sense of place. It also asks how an educator’s understanding of place is integrated into her or his teaching practices and addresses where there is room for place-based education principles in a wide range of classrooms. The findings of this study suggest that through relationships to place and people, young learners can develop a sense of belonging that drives a love of and responsibility for places on both local and global scales.

ABSTRACT - Throughout history, the urban space has become increasingly complex. The economic, political and social transformations have contributed largely to the diversification of contemporary society, market and products. In the 70/80s the cities had plunged into an urban crisis. Their weaknesses were exposed by degraded and abandoned areas, an evident result from the failures of urban planning. The development of transdisciplinary perspectives allowed for na improvement in the reflections about the reasons why it failed and, especially, about who builds the city, recognizing the different partaking actors. Taking into consideration the multiplicity of actors and interests involved in the urban space, it is necessary to identify and integrate them in decisions, in order to prevent the urban space to become a stage for games of interests and power relations in which the market is the main regulator. Based on communicative action, collaborative planning is the theory that seeks to develop methods for participatory action at different levels. This theory implies the redistribution of the State's role amongst the various formally organized agencies, laying the foundations for a joint urban governance. The aim of this study is to evaluate if the involvement of actors facilitates the implementation of plans in the construction of more equitable cities. Another purpose is, considering the case study of an integrated social and territorial intervention in Vale da Amoreira (Moita, AML), part of the governmental experimental program “Critical Urban Areas”, to understand the major difficulties involved in collaborative action and whether it might be a factor that facilitates the transition from planning to action.

The creation of a new project within an existing built environment requires more than just the careful preservation of the historical setting or domination of the ongoing architecture. Rather, the new work must sustain the vital reality of place and its external form in conjunction with the unity of all ages: past, present and future.
It is through this quest for architectural continuity that the peculiarly human quality of different places may be understood and reinterpreted. In this way, architecture can give shape to and preserve the meaningful lived-reality of place. Only through an active encounter with "place", may we create more of its dynamic vitality.

Streszczenie:
For an electrical utility, the unplanned outage of a major plant item can lead to a substantial loss of revenue. In addition, outage costs must take into account the cost of any required repairs, or even replacements. It is therefore best to avoid long outages through a combination of thorough maintenance and comprehensive condition monitoring. The condition monitoring techniques available to a utility are related to the quality and quantity of data present. In order to capture the dynamics of complex systems, high frequency data is preferred. Lack of a sufficiently high sampling rate can render traditional methods of modelling the dynamics inaccurate or impractical. This thesis proposes an adaptation of machine learning algorithms to model major and critical plant items. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are shown to allow anomaly detection in pulverising mills and gas turbines (GTs). Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are shown to allow the modelling of GT dynamics despite the absence of high frequency data, and provide tracking of machine health degradation. In addition, a multi-agent system (MAS) is proposed that incorporates several models based on subcomponents of the turbine. The use of MAS technology also allows other algorithms to be easily added to the system, to provide additional condition monitoring capability. Finally, the use of evidence combination allows the agents of different sub-components and differing algorithms to work together to improve condition monitoring performance.

Streszczenie:
Recent national and international conservation legislation has led to an increased focus on ‘prioritised species lists’ for the allocation of conservation resources. However, prioritised species lists become problematic when there are difficulties in species delimitation.  One particularly complex group accounting for the majority of these problems is Euphrasia. The goal of this thesis is to use molecular markers to evaluate taxon limits and evolutionary processes in British Euphrasia to clarify the most appropriate approach for conservation. The results show that the major reproductive barrier in the group corresponds to ploidy level, with AFLP and chloroplast data both significantly differentiated between diploid and tetraploid species, although occasional gene flow via inter-ploidal hybridisation appears to contribute towards diversification of the diploid group. The genetic data support the current species level taxonomy for the diploid but not the tetraploid species, where a considerable overlap between taxa was detected. The chloroplast data detected four discrete lineages, the distribution of these among species suggest at least three allopolyploid events in the formation of the tetraploid taxa, within which distinct ecological groups occur. Variation in the breeding system was detected at the intra- and inter-specific levels and estimates of the inbreeding coefficient showed a strong correlation with flower size and support the importance of multiple shifts in breeding system as contributing towards the overall diversification within the group. Given the lack of clear species limits in the tetraploid group and the dynamic nature of Euphrasia evolution, a change from a species- to process-based conservation approach is recommended. This charge include recognising the importance of progenitor taxa, and ecological and morphological diversity, and a decrease in the importance presently given to individual named endemic taxa.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study is to explore the assumption that classrooms are the most appropriate places for the Teaching of English as a Second or Other Language (TESOL) to adult learners in contemporary global society. It considers the success of postmodern general education curricula that systematically dissolve the boundaries between the classroom and the community and seeks to show why such a place-based approach might be particularly useful in transforming TESOL curricula which for the most part overlook informal learning. This study offers 15 successful non-mother tongue English users the opportunity to reflect on their language learning in two separate open-ended interviews. Subsequently, it analyses the range and properties of the places of their acquisition as they emerge from the interview data. The study finds that the classroom is an insufficient place because its social relations necessarily limit learner agency and generally render it ineffective for ESOL acquisition. This suggests the need to transform TESOL into a practice from within which quite new places of learning with more equal social relations emerge where English language can be effectively acquired. This study recommends that English language learners and teachers collaboratively negotiate opportunities for participation in real-world English speaking communities of practice in order to acquire language rapidly and thoroughly. It suggests that this might be achieved by transforming tertiary level English classrooms into laboratories for critical reflection where students are encouraged to discuss problems of significance to them and subsequently deliver real world solutions to the local community. This exploration of place-based TESOL employs Critical Discourse Analysis as its methodology and is situated within the critical paradigm of language education research.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this study is to analyse mutual enactments of critical literacies and social visualisation tools as information resources. The central concept of critical literacies as used here extends and redefines prior critical literacy definitions to denote the pluralistic situated enactments of meaning through which study participants identify, question and transform bias, restrictions and power related aspects of access, control and use in relation to the tools. The study is based on two critical ethnography inspired case studies involving observations, interviews, and contextual inquiry and located in professional settings. Case 1 is centred on how a geographic information system (MapInfo) is used for analysing and preventing traffic accidents. Case 2 is centred on how a dynamic time series animating chart (Trendalyzer) is used for analysing and spreading knowledge about the world’s development. The results demonstrate co-existing critical literacies described in terms of three main directionalities as reactive, proactive, and adaptive, of which the adaptive varieties seem thus far largely overlooked. On the basis of these findings, it is suggested that dominant cognitivist and positivist narratives of visualisations should be replaced with more nuanced alternatives that emphasise the potentials of visualisation tools as evocative and non-blackboxed information resources; i.e., as encouraging new questions and allowing alternative analyses, rather than constructing them as enunciative tools providing true answers. As theoretical contributions, the dissertation argues for a conceptualisation of visualisation tools as representational artefacts and a species of documents actuating information organisation related problems of representation. It also presents a new theoretical construct for the analysis and understanding of the mutual shaping of critical literacies and information resources that includes both cultural practices and actor interests through a combination of sociocultural theories on tools and sociotechnical theories on inscriptions.

Reynolds, Laura. "A critical approach to place branding governance : from 'holding stakes' to 'holding flags'". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2018. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/117479/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis presents a critical account of place branding governance, questioning whether the decentralisation of ownership enables greater stakeholder participation. To do so, three overarching components are drawn upon from the extant literature, namely (place) brand meaning (Green et al., 2016; Merrilees et al., 2012), stakeholder engagement (Foo et al., 2011; Hankinson, 2009; Hanna and Rowley, 2015) and Bourdieu’s field-capital theory (Bourdieu, 1077, 1984, 1986). The holistic analysis responds to stakeholders’ continued hierarchal involvement, which operates in contradiction to academic claims that stakeholders should be partners, and not merely passive participants, in shaping the place branding process (Aitken and Campelo, 2011; Kavaratzis, 2012). This place branding conundrum is explored through two in-depth case studies of Bath and Bristol. The case studies utilise in-depth interviews with 60 salient stakeholders from the business community, local authority, local community and visitor economy (Mitchell et al., 1997). The thesis adopts elements from a moderate constructivist approach to grounded theory to augment the data collection, data analysis, and the abductive development of emergent theory (Charmaz, 2014; Gioia et al., 2013). This approach ensures a combination of flexibility, integrity, and depth to the research process. The abductive research establishes the 7Cs of a critical approach to place branding governance. These combine the three interconnected components (claims, contributions, capacity) and four supplementary and emergent outcomes (competition, connectivity, chronology, cyclicality). Together these themes show that stakeholders who possess the greatest resources, over a prolonged period of time and across the city, are best equipped to establish and maintain their strategic positions within the place branding process.

A growing number of gay and lesbian children attend Catholic schools throughout the United States; and an untold number of gay and lesbian children in Catholic schools are experiencing harassment, violence, and prejudice because of their sexual orientation or gender non-conformity. Whether due to their size, strong sense of community, or making special considerations for vulnerable students, Catholic schools seem to be the best equipped to address these issues, but all of the research points to such schools enacting policies of silence and suppression. This study specifically explores why Catholic teachings on sexuality and social justice have may have been unable to compel Catholic schools to do more to understand and support gay and lesbian children. In addition to looking at traditional Catholic teaching, this project also engages non-traditional approaches to scholarship and theology, with an eye towards creating a new theoretical framework that can serve as the basis of a new pedagogical space within Catholic schools in which gay and lesbian children can affirm both their sexual identity and their Catholic identity.

Human social interactions imbue the world with meaning, transforming abstract spaces into lived places. Given the digital conduits of much modern social interaction, online narratives increasingly affect material places. Yet the emerging glut of online information demands new methods of investigating place narratives at multiple scales. Drawing on novel geographic visualizations of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of photographs of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands posted on the website Flickr, this study shows that online portrayals are 1) highly uneven in terms of distribution, visibility, and content, 2) fundamentally influenced by "real-world" geographies, 3) often culturally reductive, and 4) made to appear unduly exhaustive by the naturalizing visual slant of the internet as a medium of communication. These processes stand to influence how places are constructed in the information age, especially given the presence of "digital divides" that work against internet access for much of the world's population.

One of the outstanding scholars of the field of Moroccan travel literature was Muh?ammad b. Muh?ammad al-T?ayyib b. Muh?ammad b. Musa b. Muh?ammad al-Sharqi al-Sumayli, al-Fasi al-Madani. Born in the city of Fez in 1110/1698. He studied with some of the most known scholars of Morocco at that time including Abu al-cAbbas Ah?mad al-Misnawi, Abu cAbdullah Muh?ammad al-Misnawi, Abu al-cAbbas Ah?mad al-Fasi and Abu T?ahir Muhammad al-Kurani. Having acquired his early education in his home country he emigrated eastward to Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and finally to Medinah where he died in 1170/1756 after living and teaching there for many years. It is not surprising then that this great scholar left behind him a treasure of works in a variety of fields; indeed we find Ibn al-T?ayyib wrote many works, including four in jurisprudence, three in h?adith and sixteen in grammar and in linguistics. Despite this however many of his academic contributions remain in manuscript form and therefore are inaccessible to the greater majority. One such work is “Rih?lah il a al-H?ijaz,” which is particularly important to the field of travel literature as it represents a major contribution. This is because Ibn al-T?ayyib came relatively late, historically, compared to other travel writers. In addition, it contains many minute details, which the author took care to record during his journey from place to place. It also contains accounts of everything he saw and his comments regarding the social, economic and political conditions of the countries he visited, as well as comments about the scholars whom he was able to meet. This work is important also because it is considered the most important reference for the author’s life, culture and is an important literary reference in terms of the poetry and prose, classical and modern, eastern and western, that it contains. In addition it accounts for both literary and religious scholars, the linguistic derivations of geographical names and draws attention to the mistakes of those who wrote about them before him. Bearing in mind the great significance of this work from a variety of aspects this thesis involves the complete revision, editing, annotation and authentication of the manuscript including the correction of missing characters and providing available information and biographical notes on the text.

Streszczenie:
Students' connections to place are important to bring into the classroom to help them make meaning. This multimethod study investigated the overarching research question: What is the influence of a place-based curriculum on high-performing, rural students as writers? This was broken into two sub-questions: (a) What is the effect of treatment condition on students writing ability, writing self-efficacy, and concepts of community and place and (b) In what ways do students reference place in their writing? In particular, this study examined students' writing ability, writing self-efficacy, connections to community/place, and references to place in students' writing. Working from a larger data set from the Promoting PLACE (Place, Literacy, Achievement, Community, and Engagement) in Rural Schools grant, students' pre- and post-test writing tasks, self-report writing self-efficacy, and community and place scales were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative approaches to explore the ways the curriculum supported students as writers. The sample included treatment and control students, randomly assigned at the district level. The treatment group access to the Promoting PLACE curriculum and the control group received the typical services their district provided. Quantitative analysis gave rise to more questions regarding sample size, gifted identification methods, and modes of instruction. Qualitative analysis gave insight into the importance of connecting to place in the classroom, so students can explore the richness of their rural places. Using a dialogic stance, with place-based pedagogy can provide students with opportunities to critically examine their places and the experiences they have in those places.
Doctor of Philosophy
This study explored how a dialogic, place-based curriculum influences high- performing rural students as writers. The sample included treatment and control students, randomly assigned at the district level, totaling 199 students across both groups. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, the researcher examined student pre- and post-test writing tasks and self-report writing self-efficacy and community and place scales. Findings suggest that adopting a stance that in the classroom that values students’ lived experiences provides opportunities for students to make meaning using what they know and have experienced and critically examining their experiences as members of their local communities. This study provides insight into writing classrooms that embraces student experience and view students as valuable members of their communities.

This thesis analyzes the impact of the Critical Technologies Plan (CTP) on planning and budgeting activities associated with weapons systems Test and Evaluation (T&E). It discusses the intent and purpose of the CTP and develops the role and functional areas of T&E. Lastly, it analyzes the relationship between the objectives and processes involved in weapon systems T&E and the purpose of the CTP. The CTP is deemed to have a significant impact on T&E. Thirteen out of 20 critical technologies are concluded to be capable of making major contributions in 11 of the 13 T&E functional areas. It is recommended that personnel from the Deputy Director, Defense Research and Engineering (Test and Evaluation) be placed on the working group responsible for developing the CTP. It is also recommended that the T&E community view the CTP not only as a method of anticipating future weapons, but as a process to acquire and advance T&E technologies.

Streszczenie:
This international research set out to exemplify the pedagogical practices of 11 teachers from Christchurch/Ōtautahi, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and Saskatoon, Canada. It explores their resistance to the various colonial and neocolonizing constructs central to contemporary mainstream schooling in both cities (due to forces such as neoliberalism). These acts of resistance were the result of contesting ideologies of time, space, curriculum and assessment. The research, therefore, describes some of the pedagogical practises of these teachers. It also considers their narratives about their usage of place-based education (PBE) approaches and their commitment to the adoption of critical pedagogies of place (CPP) to meet the real needs of their students (both Indigenous and non-Indigenous). An interpretive paradigm was employed within a qualitative framework to underpin this research. A case study approach was also adopted and informed by a bricolage methodological framework. Primary and secondary data were collected from a number of storage sites (libraries) in both countries and through a questionnaire, interview and observation of each teacher’s classroom space. The data was analysed by coding key information while drawing out any recurring themes and points of difference. The findings reveal that certain aspects of PBE and CPP are accessible to teachers despite their feelings of being confined in terms of their ability to use time, space, curriculum and assessment within their traditional school institutions. Although their abilities to engage with PBE and CPP were limited, those teachers that had more control over time, space, curriculum and assessment were able to dive deeper into PBE and especially CPP. A key finding of this research was the extent of awareness and engagement that the teachers had in transforming controlled, static, spaces found in the classrooms, communities and natural environments into meaningful places with students. This finding also suggests that teachers with more control over time, space, curriculum and assessment have an easier time in creating this change. The findings also indicate that these teachers first needed to have the courage to challenge traditional systems of schooling, because teachers can become marginalized by other teachers and administrators when seen to be attempting to transform entrenched institutional (schooling) cultures. Flexibility and trust were two of the other recurring themes that emerged from the data collected. Teachers possessing more flexibility (with regards to time, space, curriculum and assessment design procedures) were most able to enact PBE and CPP. They were also the best-positioned participants to create meaningful professional relationships with their students and local community members. Issues of trust were clearly evident in recurring discussions around the increased amount of trust teachers needed to have with students for the students to be able to engage with space and place. There was also an increased amount of trust that school administrators (principals) needed to have in their teachers who were engaging with PBE and CPP. The research participants in this study demonstrated that, in different ways, they were striving to resist the ideologies underpinning traditional mainstream schooling, and that they were able to enact change regardless of the challenges they experienced. Their perseverance to ground their teaching in PBE and CPP approaches testifies to their love of education and their acceptance of it as a legitimate process for change and growth.

This project is about mass tourism engagement with place in Halkidiki, Greece. It seeks to understand in a critical way how mass tourists engage with place through their actual doings and their everyday practices and performances in Halkidiki. The study is routed in the understanding that mass tourism is an embodied act that is full of performances, doings and possibilities and that the holiday is not just 'passive' or 'package' but is alive and vivid. In doing so, I move away from social constructions of the mass tourist as a passive consumer, towards a more nuanced and critical understanding of the mass tourist as an active and embodied figure, one who participates in the lived moment of doing mass tourism and therefore engages with Halkidiki. Also, place is approached in this study not as an authentic and fixed entity with clear boundaries that is 'just there' waiting to be visited, but as a dynamic space created and recreated by the performances and mobilities of mass tourists.

Streszczenie:
This thesis analyses the ways in which young people conceptualise crime, policing, safety and security in their own localities. It draws upon primary empirical research to elicit the experiences and perceptions of young people in two coastal resorts. The methods employed in this research give voice to young people and aim to provide a greater understanding of their lives. An ethnographic study was conducted in two coastal resorts, one in England and one in Wales, and access to young people was facilitated through centre-based youth organisations and outreach work in the communities over a period of twelve months (six months in each locality). The research participants were aged between 10 and 17 years old. In total, 100 qualitative interviews were conducted: 23 semi-structured interviews with young people in the youth organisations and 77 unstructured qualitative interviews with young people ‘on the street’. Additional qualitative data were also generated with young people in the youth organisations through a range of methods including: participant observation; various group work exercises; photographic methods; group discussions and other visual techniques. Additional data of 12 semi-structured interviews were generated with professionals in the field of crime prevention and youth work. The thesis offers a significant contribution to knowledge about the experiences and perceptions of young people in two coastal resorts. The thesis illustrates how socio-economic characteristics of ‘place’ and ‘social class’ profoundly structure and shape young people’s experiences and perceptions. The impact of social class on access and restrictions in public space, leisure pursuits, the formation of youth identities, attachment to place, fear of crime, and young people’s securities and insecurities are all examined. The context for the research, two very different coastal resorts in socio-economic terms, revealed significant differences in how young people are policed in coastal resorts; how youth policy impacts upon their everyday experiences; and how social class is a determining factor that shapes their lives. It also raised a number of questions regarding young people’s safety in local public space. With respect to this, the research explored the main issues of concern for young people within and outside of crime prevention discourses and, in doing so, compared and contrasted the ways in which questions of youth, crime, youth governance, youth victimisation and related issues are expressed and represented in official policy discourses with that of young people’s experiences and perceptions.

Streszczenie:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The real-life problem in strategy communication is generally defined as that strategic plans are not generally well communicated to the workforce and therefore not executed to their full potential. This leads to subordinate problems such as that the strategic plan is not bought into by the employees, which leads to a lack of commitment and involvement. When not well understood, the strategic plan loses its motivational power because employees do not know what their role is. The strategy thus is not likely to have the desired effect on the market. Isolated cases of successful communication and implementation of company strategic plans do exist, which raises the question of what is required from an internal strategy communication plan, and what makes it successful. The research report attempts to answer this question and hence contribute to this knowledge field to benefit future implementers. The literature was reviewed on current approaches to establish criteria for successfully communicating a strategic plan, and a successful communication strategy used at Sishen Iron Ore Mine was documented as a case study and critically analysed. Recommendations for future implementations as well as further research were made. This report identified five main groups of requirements for a successful implementation communication strategy. These areas include the need to engage in two-way dialogue, the need to repeat the message, the need to plan the communication rollout, the important role of the middle manager and the need to show the bigger picture. The methodology is more important than the medium (visual, auditory) used. It is further concluded that, if the skill levels of the workforce differ significantly. it may be necessary to have two or more different communication strategies. Simply delegating the responsibility of communication to subordinates creates the risk of failure. It is recommended that middle managers be trained for this purpose and that the progress in each department be appropriately monitored.

In view of the pressures accompanying modern life and population growth, there is great need and importance in the preservation of historic sites, which can create balance between the past and future and strengthen the sense of stability and cultural continuity. This study critically analyzes plans for preservation and development of four of the seven colonies which were founded in Palestine in the 19th century by the German Templers who immigrated because of religious convictions. The history of the group and their contribution to the development of Palestine are described, as are the present condition of the colonies. Criteria for critical analysis of preservation plans which drawn from existing laws in the modern state of Israel, international charters, and interviews with people connected to the colonies in one way or another. The conclusions from this analysis show that only one plan fits the criteria.

Streszczenie:
Evidence-based practice is an integral part of multi-disciplinary healthcare, but its routine clinical implementation remains a challenge internationally. Written asthma action plans are an example of sub-optimal evidence-based practice because, despite being recommended, these plans are under-issued by health professionals and under-used by patients/carers. This thesis is a critical analysis of the generation and implementation of evidence in this area and provides fresh insight into this specific theory/practice gap. This submission brings together, in five published papers, a body of work conducted by the candidate. Findings report that known barriers to action plan use (such as a lack of practitioner time) are symptomatic of deeper and more complex underlying factors. In particular, over-reliance on knowledge derived from randomised controlled trials and their systematic review, as the primary and sole source of evidence for healthcare practice, hindered the implementation of these plans. A lack of evidence reflecting the personal experience of using these plans in the real world, rather than in trial settings, contributed to a mismatch between what patients/carers want from asthma action plans and what they are currently being provided with by professionals. This submission illustrates the benefits of utilising a broader range of knowledge as a basis for clinical practice. The presented papers report how new and innovative research methodologies (including meta-ethnography and cross-study synthesis) can be used to synthesise individual studies reporting the personal experiences of patients and professionals and how such findings can then be used to better understand why interventions can be implemented in trial settings rather than everyday practice. Whilst these emerging approaches have great potential to contribute to evidence-based practice by, for example, strengthening the ‘weight’ of experiential knowledge, there are methodological challenges which, whilst acknowledged, have yet to be fully addressed.

Streszczenie:
This research is motivated by two central questions: 1) Why has the place of critical studies in secondary art and design been diagnosed as 'fragile'? 2) Can practitioners from related fields inform a critical curriculum through interventionist strategies? To place the thesis in context, the National Curriculum is examined to indicate the place of critical studies within official art educational discourse. This analysis reveals a disjunction between official rhetoric and practice, one that stimulated the interdisciplinary, action research project, Art Critics and Art Historians in Schools. The researchers aimed to understand, inform and change the a critical practices of school art by instigating critical residencies drawing on the investigative and interpretative methods of (new) art history and the practices of critical pedagogy. Employing Bernstein's theory of pedagogic codes, qualitative data drawn from the project is analysed to understand the insularity of the subject and the asymmetry in power relations between art education and the other professional discourses that dominate it. These disjunctions are the starting point for a genealogy that traces the development of modernist art education using Bourdieu's concepts of 'capital', `habitus' and 'field' to navigate its complexities. The unfolding narrative reveals the dialectical philosophies that produced modernist art education and made an a critical model in secondary education tenable, an a criticality that sits uncomfortably beside the critical discourses of modernist art. Related fields are examined to understand the social and cultural conditions that have succeeded in producing a critical education. The critical traditions for the interpretation of art (including art history and visual semiotics) are examined and assessed as potential critical resources. Evidence emerges of art teachers' mistrust towards the role of writing in critical studies which has led to the current resistance. In response, the interventionist strategies of critical pedagogy and cultural studies are advocated as a means to overcome such resistance.

Streszczenie:
In March 2010, parents and community activists in rural Sunflower County, Mississippi, organized and enacted a boycott of the local public schools, which led to a comprehensive accreditation audit by the Mississippi Department of Education and the subsequent takeover of the local education agency. This study examines the boycott's connections to local discourses of protest in the Black community, to local histories and contemporary quality of life, and to the circulations of power evident in the grassroots activism and in the state intervention. This work is situated in an interdisciplinary theoretical framework which draws on place studies, rhizome theory, Levinasian ethics, and Critical Discourse Analysis. Using ethnographic methods of data collection and Critical Discourse Analysis of data, I position the boycott in context and examine its rhizomatic roots and offshoots in discourse.
