Purpose - The purpose of this thesis is to provide recommendations for commercial organizations when managing crises. By examining the ongoing operations of health care organizations the thesis will investigate the application of a similar structure toward commercial organizations. Background - In the globalized a fast paced reality we operate in it is essential for organizations to be prepared for the unthinkable. This have been illustrated not only in reality, but also empathized by a vast amount of researchers. A survey made by Steelhenge, an international consultancy, argues that organizations are not sufficiently prepared for crises. Researchers have also notified this lack of crisis preparedness within organizations. We argue that being crisis prepared is an essential factor and responsibility for commercial organizations in modern society. Method - In order to answer the research questions we have used a qualitative research method. The qualitative research method is further linked to the descripto-exploratory purpose, abductive reasoning and directed content analysis that provide a mixture of concept and data driven categories. We have conducted semi-structured, one-on-one interviews within health care organizations and commercial organizations. The respondents were chosen by a purposive and self-selecting sampling method. Conclusion - The empirical study suggests that there are learning’s to be considered for commercial organizations by applying health care organizations operational structure. What can be concluded is that health care organizations rely on coordination between individuals or teams to solve multi-functional issues. Commercial organizations would implement CMT’s to use a similar structure with all the essential factors for efficient coordination.

Our aim is to investigate and evaluate the efficiency of crisis management in European aviation, and to recommend enhancements. To fulfill this, we mapped the current crisis management plans and created a fictive scenario where a cyber-attack shut down the power at five of the major airports in Europe. Air traffic in Europe was reconstructed to a chosen day; the 16th of September 2013, and the reconstructed traffic situation was used in the scenario. We also created a model, for the purpose of showing the effect of a cut in time for the steps in the crisis management plan may have on the traffic waiting to depart at the closed airports. When using these means, we could implement the crisis management plans on the fictive scenario and make changes to the plans for a new implementation. The existing crisis management plans were compared to the modified plans made by us, and it was found that usage of a common platform for the different stakeholders involved in the crisis could improve the efficiency of the crisis management.

Initial modules review the literature on critical incidents or crises with emphasis on a school context where possible and appropriate. A widely accepted four-stage model is used as a basis for the review. In the field of crisis management, practice appears to be based mainly on clinical judgement and the related best practice literature provides valuable insights. A number of specific programs are discussed which do have some founding in research. For a range of reasons, mental health promotion in the school context is gaining attention and appears a particularly promising area that can be used effectively. A number of interventions are of questionable efficacy. Youth Suicide is considered as an issue of specific importance to schools. In module 4, a skills-based training workshop is developed around a scenario of an evolving crisis. With the intent of giving school staff the skills to undertake the multiplicity of tasks that may be required, the workshop uses evidence-based and best practice recommendations to create a coherent path through crisis situations. The following module takes this process further by creating a comprehensive, step-by-step process for producing a school crisis management plan that sets out how the Crisis Management Team will operate, the tasks it will perform and the support that will be available, Module 6 looks at school safety and the link to crisis management. Critical questions are considered in relation to the value of a safety audit to a school and to the Crisis Management process, and, whether taking actions based on an audit leads to a safer school. Finally, consideration is given to how the school can support recovery after a crisis. Practical actions are identified for immediate and ongoing actions based on particular models where there is some supportive evidence as to effectiveness. Limitations are noted, particularly that much of the research is based on disasters and focuses on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The purpose of this research is to show the opportunities that Business Simulations produce when combining them with Crisis Management in a non-controlled environment. Although, there are some other studies about each topic, but this non studied synergy created shows a much more important and efficient effect when talking about managing a crisis. We used a systematic data collection of relevant articles that talked about each stage of a crisis management, making a vast literature background for each one. A combination and collision of conclusions and studies of each topic, ended up in the main topic of this article, where the authors got to capture the importance and efficiency of the combination strategy between Crisis Management and Crisis Simulation. We found that crisis management literature divides a crisis in three stages: Prevention, Handling and Recovering. These stages allude to the timing of the action to control the crisis, where a pre-crisis action stands for Prevention, in-crisis actions go for Handling and after-crisis actions relate to Recovery. In each stage, a crisis simulation would help firms by improving their reaction time and capacity, their adaptability and reduce costs of a bad decision. Our results are important because other articles talk about these topics separately and the synergy and efficiency that comes with the use of both topics in parallel is not noticed, so the importance of this research would be to note and explain this synergy and efficiency, and make emphasis in how simple can this be implemented.

Civilian Crisis Management (CCM) is part of the European security and defence policy (ESDP), which is, on its own, an element of the broader common foreign and security policy (CFSP). CCM, ESDP and CFSP are tools of the external relations of the European Union (EU) . Civilian crisis management is a policy of the EU whose analysis requires both a theoretical and practical approach. It is indispensable to understand what civilian crisis management is, in general, and specifically in the framework of the European Union (Chapter I). Afterwards, some attention has been devoted to the investigation of the civilian crisis management initiatives of the United Nations (UN), of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), of the Western European Union (WEU) and of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (Chapter I). A further step in the understanding of the CCM of the EU is the evaluation of its historical evolution from the Treaty of Maastricht up to 2006 (Chapter II and III). It is also paramount to consider how CCM missions are designed, planned and deployed (Chapter IV) and which missions have been carried trough until 2006 (Chapter V). Finally, it has been evaluated which is the current relations in-between CCM, ESDP and CFSP and which is the added value of EU's CCM compared to the initiatives of other international organizations (Conclusions).

Crisis are extremely difficult to predict and according to Curtin, Hayman and Husein (2005) this is a problem that worsen by the trend in the 1970s and 80s where companies developed managers to be specialists. One example of this trend could be that a finance

director knows only about finance, likewise for the marketing director, the technology director and operations director who all have their specialist fields. This kind of approach will lead to gaps in the management structure, since a finance director who is

driven by profits and earnings per share would most probably lose sight of the bigger picture which will prevent the chances of predicting any crisis (Curtin et al., 2005). This kind of thinking began to change in the 1990s and a new approach came into vogue

where managers were produced to be far more rounded than they were previously, as a generalist (Curtin et al., 2005). Our purpose is to find out how crisis emerge in projects and investigate the role of emotion in crisis management.

The qualitative method is best suited to fulfil our aim since we are interested in individual’s personal experiences and personal reflections related to crisis management. The reason for us not choosing the quantitative method is that we do not wish to measure or create statistical generalizations about crisis management, it is rather to describe the essence of crisis management and issues related to crisis management, also how crisis is perceived from organizations. We therefore performed interviews with respondents that were of interest for our purpose.

With all the information and knowledge gathered throughout our research we believe that when it comes to the abilities of the project managers to predict and prevent crisis, it is correct that managers have different and perhaps better education than 30 years ago

but when everything comes around it is still next to impossible to completely be able to prevent crisis. We came to this conclusion after done our research and realized that even though every project manager who has been involved in any crisis can not completely

prevent the same crisis to happen again.

De senaste årens naturkatastrofer, smittsamma sjukdomar och terroristattentat är exempel på en ökad hotbild vilken svenska researrangörer måste förhålla sig till. I syfte att skydda människor och företagets kommersiella värden gäller det därför att skaffa sig en beredskap för att hantera krissituationer. Hanteringen av kriser involverar ofta företagets förmåga att hantera förändringar. Researrangörerna i denna studie arbetar samtliga med någon form av Crisis Management. Krisberedskap och krishantering är en självklarhet för researrangörernas överlevnad på en konkurrensutsatt marknad. Dock har det under de senaste åren infunnit sig yttre faktorer som påtvingat researrangörerna nya sätt att agera och ibland till och med nya sätt att tänka. Den forskningsfråga som vi önskar besvara med denna studie sammanfattas enligt följande formulering. Vilka fördelar kan ett strategiskt och systematiskt arbete med riskbedömning, krisberedskap och krishantering medföra för reseföretagen i samband med en ökad yttre hotbild? Vidare är syftet med denna uppsats att genom fallstudier hos ett antal researrangörer öka förståelsen för de yttre faktorer och de inre processer som påverkar företagens verksamhet i samband med en ökad hotbild samt visa vilka fördelar ett strategiskt och systematiskt arbete med riskbedömning, krisberedskap och krishantering kan medföra för dessa organisationer. Resultatet av vår studie visar att ett strategiskt och systematiskt arbete med riskbedömning, krisberedskap och krishantering leder till ett ökat förtroende för researrangören hos dess kunder, allmänhet och media samt ett stärkt varumärke dock under förutsättning att detta arbete kommuniceras av företaget.

The rise of social media has brought an increasingly open and transparent environment, where everyone can share thoughts and opinions with other people. This new transparent world creates new challenges in many fields. One of these is in the field of crisis management. The question is how companies should handle a crisis in social media. The thesis starts by investigating theory regarding areas affecting crisis management in social media. From this theory; a quantitative survey, qualitative interviews and investigation of secondary data are conducted. This resulted in findings, regarding what is important for companies, concerning crisis management in social media. It is important for companies to monitor social media, to be quick in replying in social media and to reply in a human, non corporate, voice. It is as well important to have a crisis plan, a crisis response team and a main responsible for crisis management in social media. We have seen that it seems like larger companies generally are more prepared for crisis management in social media and that they consequently are better in handling a crisis in social media.

För eller senare kommer man som lärare att ställas inför det faktum där man måste hantera en krissituation, där en eller flera barn behöver omsorg. Forskning inom ämnet krishantering är därför ett viktigt hjälpmedel för hur man på bästa sätt stöttar och hjälper barn och vuxna i svåra situationer. Mitt syfte med detta arbete har varit att ta reda på hur man inom skolan arbetar men krishantering för att på så sätt samla kunskap inom ämnet. Denna kunskap är ett viktigt redskap för mig i mitt kommande läraryrke men också för andra som är verksamma inom läraryrket. I min undersökning har jag använt mig av kvalitativa intervjuer och intervjuat två pedagoger och en rektor. Intervjuerna har tillsammans med den litteratur jag läst gett mig följande resultat: Ingen kris är den andra lik och det är därför svårt att förberedda sig inför eventuella kriser, dock är en krisplan ett väldigt bra hjälpmedel. Barn reagerar olika på kriser utifrån sin ålder och tidigare erfarenheter, det är därför viktigt att personal som jobbar inom skolan har kunskap inom ämnet barn och sorg. Den viktigaste känslan läraren kan förmedla är trygghet till den/dem som är drabbad. Känslan att vara förbered inför kommande kriser är varierad, några känner sig redo och andra skulle vilja ha mer utbildning inom ämnet krishantering.

The absence of adequate crisis management strategies in small firms could result in a premature small business closure. A qualitative multiple-case study was used to explore the crisis management strategies that 3 small business owners have used to survive an unexpected operational interruption. The small business owners in this study were from different industries in the southeast region of the United States and each owner owned a business for more than 5 years and had survived at least a single crisis. The theory of crisis management and crisis intervention theory were the conceptual frameworks for this study. Data collection occurred through semistructured face-to-face interviews with small business owners; observations; and a review of company documents comprised of business plans, insurance policies, floor plans, and emergency exit routes. Data were thematically analyzed and then triangulated to ensure trustworthiness of interpretations. The findings included 3 emergent themes: the importance of developing survival strategies; transparency, open communication, and relationship building; and creative thinking as a survival strategy. Recommendations for action include securing adequate insurance coverage, investing in a worker's compensation policy, and maintaining transparent and fluent communications with vendors and consumers. Small business owners who implement survival strategies may contribute to positive social change by continuing to create employment opportunities that improve economic conditions in local communities.

Background: Crisis and crisis management is a research topic that since the 1980s has gotten increasing amounts of attention in research. A crisis refers to an event that may have severe effects on an organisation's survival, making it important to know how to prepare for them. Interest in research about crisis preparedness has been growing. However, literature tends to focus on crisis preparedness in an MNE (Multinational Enterprises) context, thus, leaving out SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises). Nonetheless, SMEs are a large and crucial part of the economy that may equally, if not more, be affected by crises. In SMEs, the leader has a significant impact on the strategic decisions in the business, making them a crucial part of the crisis preparedness process and an important aspect to study. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore what factors could influence the way a leader prioritises to work with crisis preparedness in SMEs. Further, this research aims to understand how those priorities affect the level of crisis preparedness in SMEs. Method:  This study was conducted as a qualitative exploratory research in the form of a cross-sectional multiple case study. The data was collected through twelve semi-structured in-depth interviews, where all the participants were active as leaders in SMEs. The data collected in the interviews was subsequently analysed through a thematic analysis approach. Conclusion: It was found that besides the previously found external factors of SMEs, crisis preparedness is also influenced by the leader’s attitude about crisis preparedness. This attitude, in turn, is primarily formed through the leader’s understanding of crises and their personality. It was further found that the type of industry could be a factor in crisis preparedness due to for example, differing amounts of rules and regulations. In conclusion, the thesis was able to connect much of what has been found in previous research while adding a focus on the leader and their attitude about crisis preparedness.

The growth of social media has set demands on organizations to be online and interact with stakeholders, especially during a crisis. The public are no longer seen as passive receivers of marketing messages. Previous studies have shown that the need for information increases during a crisis. Social media can be a powerful tool if is used strategically. This case study looks deeper into Oxfam’s 2018 Haiti sexual exploitation scandal, as an attempt to understand how organizations communicate on social media during a crisis. By co-applying multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) and the social-mediated crisis communication (SMCC) model, a broader understanding of how the crisis was handled can be developed. The data consists of four Instagram posts that will be analyzed, drawing upon four multimodal frameworks from Machin (2017): Iconography: the ‘hidden meanings’ of images; The meaning of color in visual design; The meaning of typography; and Representation of social actors in images. In order to obtain a broader picture of the strategies, key public and relationships, the components of the SMCC model will be identified and presented for this case. The result of this study shows that multiple response strategies have been used to communicate both tailored messages and unified organizational messages. It is apparent that Oxfam did not have a clear strategy and altered between apologizing, “blaming” individuals within the organization and distancing themselves from the crisis.

Organizations are threatened and strugglingto cope with the pandemic and making right decisions. This has put more attention on managementteam to address the issue at hand. This thesis explores how individuals experience crisis andmanaging it by decisions. Problem: Insufficient literature on how to make appropriate decisions in management team tocope with Covid-19 crisis. Purpose: This thesis purpose is to explore how crisis management team experience and cope withdecisions in the context of Covid-19. How individuals in a team overcome obstacles and makeappropriate decisions. Risks, uncertainty, stress, and time are previously known challenges formanagement teams. We aim to explore how these aspects affect the decision-making process. Research Question: How does crisis management team cope with Covid pandemic throughdecision-making? Method: This thesis has a qualitative research design and method of semi-structured interviewscarried out in a virtual environment due to Covid-19. Six informants have contributed to theempirical study. The empirical findings are presented in chapter 4 and analyzed by themes. Chapter5 provides discussion on the theoretical background and thesis findings, and finally conclusion inchapter 6. Conclusion: Crisis management encounters challenges with appropriate decisions for coping withCovid-19. However, our findings suggest that risk, ambiguity, and time factors are not majorchallenge and contradict this. This is due to the process of having an established crisis and makingdecisions collectively on all stages of a crisis. The most important stage of a crisis is the pre-stagewhere information is limited and guides the outcome of the whole process.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore crisis management teams’ (CMTs) perceptions of higher education leaders’ competencies in managing crisis situations. It addressed the following research question: What are relationships among CMT members’ perceptions of leadership orientations and perceived competencies of their crisis management leaders? Exploratory data analyses showed the presence of two of Bolman and Deal’s (2013) primary leadership frames: human resource and structural. Analyses also showed relationships among lower reported leadership frame behaviors, crisis preparedness, and crisis-leader ratings. More extensive research on crisis leadership is recommended.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces are currently deployed in three Balkan states: Bosnia-Herzegovina; Yugoslavia, in the province of Kosovo; and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). These three deployments represent NATO's attempts to date to conduct crisis management operations, a mission the Alliance adopted in the early 1990s and now a fundamental security task alongside collective defense. In view of the increasing importance of crisis management in NATO activities, this thesis analyzes the Balkan operations to identify lessons that can be applied to future doctrines. NATO's 1991 and 1999 Strategic Concepts are reviewed to illustrate the development of NATO's crisis management doctrine. Each Balkan intervention is examined to clarify NATO's crisis management failures and successes, and to assess apparent lessons. The thesis compares the lessons learned with the crisis management doctrine contained in the 2001 NATO Handbook, and offers recommendations for revisions to take fuller account of the lessons learned in the Balkans.

Nowadays, there is a growing need to consider crisis management in organizations due to an increased occurrence of crises in our society. Manufacturing organizations are often affected by crises due to their supply chain reliance and many small-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) do not have the resources to work with crisis management. There is an identified lack of research regarding how manufacturing SMEs work with crisis management and how the particularities of the manufacturing industry and the specific characteristics and reliance of resources of SMEs can affect crisis management. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding of strategic crisis management in manufacturing SMEs. The thesis outlines different strategic crisis management models which includes the crisis processes of detection, occurrence, and recovery. To understand the practices of manufacturing SMEs, a qualitative study was conducted through 8 eight semi-structured interviews with respondents from Sweden and Switzerland. The thesis discuss the findings of the crisis management carried out by the manufacturing SMEs and existing crisis management models for SMEs and Chinese large- and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (CLMMEs). The paper concludes that manufacturing SMEs are affected economically by the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. The most common impacts include a decrease in orders and delivery delays. Furthermore, the research provides a contribution to the understanding of how manufacturing SMEs deal and work with crises. The most identified practices were market diversification, active communication with stakeholders, cost reduction and crisis recap.Findings also showed that manufacturing SMEs worked with pre-event planning as an essential part of their crisis management. The paper further proposes a strategic crisis management model for manufacturing SMEs.

With respect to Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) and their central role in the European economy, it is of high relevance of today’s researchers to adopt the perspec-tive of these businesses to take on a more crisis prepared approach. Purpose. The focus of this study is to investigate the perception of the concepts of crisis and crisis management among SMEs’ managers in different industries in Sweden. Moreover, this study intends to develop an understanding of the decision-making behind a crisis pre-pared approach of different industries of SMEs. Method. This research employs a multi-methodical qualitative research approach in which, in-depth interviews with owner-managers of SMEs and a crisis expert have been conduct-ed. Results. This study indicates that there may be a lack of insight regarding the core meaning of crises and crisis management among the SMEs’ managers studied. Crises and crisis management was found to be perceived in a similar way among all the managers in the study. Crises were perceived as involving the personnel and safety issues of the business-es. Crisis Management, was understood as the management of an already occurred crisis, rather than the preparation for potential crises. A deficiency was found among the busi-nesses regarding crisis preparations. This seemed to be related to resource restrictions and a general lack of research about this topic in the context of SMEs. The study indicates that SME managers do not always make formal decisions regarding crisis preparations. In the cases where the SME managers of the study had prepared plans and strategies for how to handle crises, these had emerged as a gradual process rather than from decisions taken in this matter.

The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of how gender is discussed in the context of Finnish crisis management. By utilizing the report of the Parliamentary Committee on Crisis Management as a single case study, the study seeks to examine if and how the report embodies elements of liberal feminism in its discussion on gender. Since this study is based upon liberal feminism, specific coding was applied to identify those parts of the report that discuss gender, with each coding category deriving from liberal feminist philosophy. The findings of this study suggest that the discussion on gender in the context of Finnish crisis management is strongly focused on women and especially, efforts to strengthen the presence of female experts in crisis management operations. By highlighting the need to strengthen equal gender distribution among experts employed to crisis management operations, the report embodies several liberal feminist values, such as achieving gender equality. However, as the report only discusses gender in terms of women and girls, it excludes both men and boys. Based on these findings, this study argues that the way the report embodies liberal feminist thinking is potentially problematic since its discussion on gender does not consider men and women to an equal extent.

Abstract Purpose: In a competitive and constituently changing global business environment, it is almost  impossible  for  organizations  to  avoid  crises  of  various  types  and  magnitude.  The objective of this study is to display relationships between perception of crisis awareness, crisis readiness and the organizations` actual crisis management initiatives against major industrial crises. This thesis also aims to clarify if the perception of crisis-awareness and crisis-readiness could be affected by other factors that should be in considerations, which in turn could affect the outcomes of crisis-management initiatives and actions in industrial organizations. Methodology:  By  way  of  introduction,  the  problem,  which  is  related  to  the  industrial crises and proactive crisis-management and which also refers to the core topic of the study was formulated and discussed. Research questions about “How the employee’s perception of crisis- awareness  and  crisis-readiness  affects  the  outcomes  of  an  organization's  crisis-management initiatives?”  and “How  top  managements  could  affect  the  employee’s  perception  of  crisis- awareness and crisis-readiness positively toward PCM in their organization?” were identified. The  covering  and  important  data  was  collected  through  scientific  literatures  and  articles  and was presented in the theory part. Collected data and empirical findings from the world’s two largest automaker namely, Volkswagen and Toyota, whom has been involved in scandals and crises related to core research of this paper. Empirical findings has been analyzed and finally the answer to the research questions were proposed. Findings: The result of the research indicates that the perception of crisis awareness and crisis  readiness  in  organization  have  a  direct  impact  on  the  organizations  crisis  management initiatives  and  activities  and  also  there  are  elements  like Corporate  Culture,  Personnel Education in Crisis Management and Corporate Communication and also other factors, which would affect the perceptions in organizations. Implication:  The  study  suggest  that  by  effective  use  of  elements  presented  here, organizations could influence employees crisis awareness and crisis readiness positively, thus strengthening the organizations crisis management capacities.

A survey made by the insurance company IFclaims that Swedish companies are badly prepared within the area of crisismanagement. A more globalized world also increases the effects of crisesfrom all over the world to affect Swedish corporations. We claim thatorganizational structure is a key factor to be able to have a developedcrisis management throughout the whole organization. Method:In order to answer the purpose we have used a qualitative deductiveresearch method. We have conducted semi-structured face to faceinterviews within two different types of Swedish organizations. Therespondents were chosen randomly from a division- or group managementlevel. Conclusion:The empirical study claims that there is a difference when defining a crisis,depending on previous experiences and education. To have the sameeducation and an overall common understanding of crisis management alsoincreases the efficiency when handling a crisis. Organizational structure and hierarchy is vital when it comes to crisismanagement. To have a clear structure and standardized meetings withinthe organization will help vigorous information to be communicated fromtop-bottom as well as from the bottom-top. However it might decreasethe flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit and our findings suggest that thisis an area that needs to involve within further researches.

This thesis investigates how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has tactically managed and defused major crises between 2002 and 2008 which put its credibility and legitimacy to the test. Contrary to conventional wisdom that major crises are likely to challenge and threaten regime stability in authoritarian systems or even undermine their viability, this thesis argues that the CCP has managed to sustain its political hegemony to date through the manipulation of these major crises and through the maximum tinkering with the current political system it reigns over. In order to explain why manipulation is the key in the CCP’s successful crisis management, this thesis first develops a critical reassessment of the conception of crisis and elaborates on crisis’s tripartite political utilities. These are (a) shift the dominating paradigm, (b) centralise political power and (c) (re) gain popularity and legitimacy. These altogether form an analytical framework for crisis, which is followed by a chapter that sets the backdrop against which our case studies unfold and explains why the Chinese context is particularly favourable for crisis manipulation. The thesis then proceeds with three case studies: the 2003 SARS epidemic, the 2008 Sichuan earthquake and the Sanlu milk scandal occurred in the same year. The thesis suggests that although the CCP’s responses were not flawless, and not always timely, it managed to manipulate all three crises in its favour via the aforementioned political utilities and subsequently defused these crises. At the same time, its Leninist structure was able to unleash formidable mobilisation capacity to help the regime rapidly bring situations under control. Overall, the CCP’s crisis management efficacy was satisfactory in the short term. Nevertheless, the thesis concludes that despite the short term usefulness of crisis manipulation, in the long term the efficacy of the same strategy as well as the political utility of crisis are decaying, as illustrated in reference to more recent crises that stretched the CCP’s credibility. Therefore, the CCP is in need of embarking on substantive political reform in order to develop an alternative crisis displacement mechanism. This thesis makes an original contribution to the existing literature in the field. It complements the public administration and public management literature by bringing politics back in. It also updates the empirical knowledge base of past studies as well as offering a comparison of crisis responses. This is a timely contribution to the study of Chinese crisis management and to the study of the nature of Chinese politics.

As a critical infrastructure, the US electricity grid supplies electricity to 340 million people within eight separate regions. The power infrastructure is vulnerable to many types of disasters capable of severing supplies of electricity. The impact on the employees and communities when small- and medium-size enterprises are shut down due to disasters can be severe. The purpose of the quantitative comparative study was to explore small- and medium-size enterprises crisis management strategies in the case of power infrastructure vulnerabilities. Perceptions of small business leaders were probed about crisis management planning relevant to three secondary factors: prior experience of crises, threat perceptions, and planning self-efficacy. Participants completed an adapted questionnaire instrument based on a five-point Likert scale for six sub-factors including resilience through planning, financial impact, operational crisis management, the perfect storm, the aftermath of survival, and atrophy. The instrument also measured three additional factors to include, prior experience of crises, threat perceptions, and planning self-efficacy, across seven types of crises. The results of this study indicated that of the 276 respondents, 104 had no crisis plans, but 172 did have crisis plans. Of those who had implemented crisis plans, 19% had specific provisions to address power outages or attacks on the electrical grid. Of the respondents who had not planned for power outages nor experienced significant losses of power, a statistically significant number acknowledged an external threat to their business. The majority of respondents indicated that long-term planning was related to resilience; however, the migration of crisis understanding into the planning process or implementation was not implemented. This heightened awareness of potential crises without the corresponding development and implementation of mitigation crisis plans requires additional research to understand drivers effecting the decision making process with crisis managers.

The aim of the following thesis was to create a set of principles for crisis communication on Facebook. Presence in social media has become a standard part of any promotional mix. However, not every company fully recognizes the advantages and drawbacks of this tool. Once something goes wrong, the reputation of a company can be seriously endangered. The potential harm grows, when dealing with the issue is presented publicly. The thesis provides an analysis of how the emergence of social media changed the classical PR and a theoretical frame for a company's communication in case of negative publicity. In the analytical part two surveys were conducted, one within consumers to analyze their attitude towards making complaints on Facebook and the other one with social media experts by discussing their experience and opinions on this issue. Based on these findings, a set of 10 recommendations for crises on Facebook were formulated.

The purpose of this research was to investigate crisis management in the context of the tourism sector by means of a case study of the Malaysian response to the Asian financial crisis. Not only was the reaction of the Malaysian government to the crisis examined but the possibility of developing a strategy to protect the sector against future crises was also explored. Primary data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews with senior Malaysian public and private sector policy makers. Areas of interest addressed included the crisis management measures employed to assist the recovery of the tourism sector; the lessons learnt from the crisis: the potential for public/private sector cooperation to develop a crisis management plan for the tourism sector; and how such a plan might be implemented. It was generally felt by the participants that the measures employed had been effective in restoring the tourism sector status quo, although there was some concern expressed over how long this had taken. It was agreed that there is a need for a sectoral crisis management plan but no consensus as to who should fund it, which figures could be used as indicators of the approach of a crisis and how they should be collected, and what form any such plan should take. This research indicates that there is a case for the government to work with the private sector to develop some sort of crisis management provision for the tourism sector. However, it is apparent that it may be extremely problematic to formulate an appropriate plan and there may be difficulties as to how it should be funded and who should take responsibility for its implementation. It appears that an approach at state level would have more potential than a federal plan but more research in this area is required.

On the Sunday 10th of March 2019 Nairobi-bound Boeing 737MAX8 Flight ET302 of EthiopianAirlines plunge in to the ground and kills all 157 passengers onboard. Consequently, the accidenttook attention of international media and people around the world. This study therefore aims atinvestigating the communication strategies employed by EAL when managing ET302 planecrash and various issues associated with the crash using the two stages of crisis management. Toachieve the purpose, Nethnography and CDA methods were employed. To analyze thecommunication strategies SCCT was used. Accordingly, it was found out that, EAL highlyapplied “apology”, “shifting blame”, and “corrective action” strategies in its crisiscommunication via Facebook and Twitter pages. Additionally, the fairly immediate responsesgiven to each issue, the media monitoring system and the empathetic approach contributed to thegood crisis management. The study also finds out that more attention was given to the Twitterand updates were faster than the Facebook page. The study concludes that previous good imageof EAL plays a significant role to the impact a crisis would have in addition to its effective crisismanagement via social media. Finally, it’s recommended that EAL should communicate moreefficiently on its Facebook page to uplift its accomplishments and meet its online publics in awide range.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a worldwide economic effect, and it seems to have produced a challenging economic climate for startups to work in. Thus, the aim of this degree project is to investigate how startups survived the financial and organizational crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and what was the role of their employees during the crisis. The objective is to look at how early-stage startups in Greece are dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, whether they can utilize crisis management models, and how the crisis encourages creative destruction. Schumpeterian innovation theory has been merged with crisis management theories to achieve this goal. The thesis employs a qualitative methodology and uses a multiple case study design where cases are the individual startups interviewed. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with a top-management representative of each company.  The results indicate that the startups under discussion are experiencing significant changes. At the beginning of the crisis, they faced a threatening disengagement and demotivation of their employees, which they managed to overcome by focusing on their wellbeing, coaching them, and guiding them through the crisis. The Caplanian model was utilized to analyze their approach. Based on the companies’ core competencies, they are actively pivoting to emerging business models and new markets. These companies are discovering new possibilities and innovating in a number of areas, following both the Schumpeterian evolutionary theories of creative destruction and creative accumulation. Overall, the findings suggest that in responding to the crisis, startups modified and strengthened their strategies. The shift in customer purchasing behavior was a major reason why businesses needed to develop their strategies. The modified consumer behavior was the outcome of actions taken by the Greek government and the Public Health Agency to avoid the spread of the virus such as social distancing, travel bans, and closed borders.

O objetivo desta dissertação é compreender a ocorrência de alteração de orientação da operação pós crise operacional (de reativa a proativa). A literatura trata as crises apenas como financeiras ou de relações públicas e não recorre ao termo \"crise operacional\". Por outro lado, junta inapropriadamente as crises operacionais e os desastres envolvendo perda de vidas humanas. Tampouco mostra o lado operacional da solução das crises. Crise operacional foi aqui definida como uma condição abrupta de baixa probabilidade que emerge inesperadamente da deterioração do desempenho operacional (qualidade, rapidez, confiabilidade, flexibilidade ou custo) e conduz a grande impacto negativo ou até a paralisação das principais operações da organização, sem a perda de vidas humanas. A crise operacional pode ser causada por pessoas, sistemas tecnológicos, políticas ou condições econômicas em condição de grande ambiguidade. Ela nasce ao final de dois processos paralelos e acumulativos de imperfeições organizacionais e descontrole gerencial, e requer decisões rápidas. Para analisar as crises operacionais, elaborou-se um novo modelo teórico integrado em fases: \"processo de uma crise\", \"resolução da crise\" e \"aprendizado pós-crise\", assim como um \"evento detonador\" da crise. Como objeto de estudo, escolheu-se examinar duas crises de setores regulamentados devido a evidencia do evento detonador da crise: a interrupção da comercialização de serviços pela agência reguladora e consequente início da resolução da crise. Como metodologia, adotou-se o estudo de casos múltiplo nos setores de aviação e de telefonia móvel. O instrumento de coleta para ambos os casos são entrevistas qualitativas, sendo a análise baseada no confronto dos dados obtidos com o modelo segundo a abordagem Extended Case Method. Sugere-se em ambos os casos que o descontrole sobre os processos operacionais e indicadores de back-office levaram à paralisação das companhias. Observa-se que após a crise, novos processos com medidas preventivas foram adotados, o que indicaria a mudança de orientação das organizações. Claramente, essa mudança para a orientação preventiva requer aprendizagem organizacional e sua incorporação ao repertório operacional mediante inovação em métodos, sistemas e processos operacionais, assim como a formação de funcionários treinados e a criação de departamentos anti-crises.
The main goal of this research is the understanding of the post operational crisis\' orientations\' change (from reactive to proactive). The literature consider crises just as financial or public relations and does not call upon the term \"operational crisis\". Furthermore, operational crisis and disasters with loss of human lives are inappropriately treated jointly. In the same way, operational side of crisis solution are not explored too. Operational crisis were defined here as an abrupt condition of low probability occurrence that emerges unexpectedly by the deterioration of one or more performance indicators (quality, speed, reliability, flexibility and cost) and leads to a large negative impact or even the paralysis of major operations without human lives\' loss. Operational crisis emerges at the end of a maturation process originated from two parallel processes of cumulative organizational imperfections and lack of managerial control\'s joint. May be caused by people, technological systems, policies or economics\' conditions in a great ambiguity condition which requires quick decisions To analyze operational crises, a new theoretical model was created, integrating the phases: \"crisis\' process,\" \"crisis\' resolution\" and \"post-crisis\' learning\", as well a crisis\' \"trigger event\". Two operational crises from regulated sectors has been chosen as object study due to crisis\' trigger event evidence: the new sales forbidden by the regulatory agency and the consequent crisis resolution process beginning. The methodology adopted was the multiple case study in the aviation and mobile sectors. The collection instrument for both cases were qualitative interviews and the analysis based on the data obtained and theoretical model\'s comparison in an approach called Extended Case Method. It has been suggested in both cases that the operational processes\' lack of control and back-office\'s indicators\' disregard led to the companies\' standstill. After crisis, new operational processes with preventive measures were adopted, which would indicate a change in organizations\' orientation. Clearly, this shift to a preventive approach requires organizational learning and its incorporation into the operational repertoire through methods, operational systems and processes\' innovation, as well as, trained human resources and anti-crisis department creation.

The 2007 financial crisis can be viewed from various perspectives. First, it can be explained in a wider macroeconomic context, for example by looking at the housing bubble. Monetary policy can be explained according to the BB-NN and IS-LM models. Another way to view the crisis is from a banking perspective by analyzing the changes in the financial market and the deregulation of the banking industry. As the financial sector has grown enormously over the past years, the principle of "Too Big to Fail" should also be scrutinized. Wall Street's economic power was closely related to politics, and therefore it is very helpful to study the financial crisis from a political perspective. After looking at these perspectives, the regulation system should be considered in more detail, paying special attention to systemic risk. Apart from these perspectives, there is still another way to look at the financial crisis: as a Black Swan event. I will point out how the Black Swan event can provide a framework and meaning to interpret the financial crisis. Lastly, the problem of credit rating agencies will be addressed, as this is one of the main causes of the financial crisis. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the financial crisis from various perspectives, and find an appropriate solution to prevent the next financial crisis.
