Streszczenie:
Scholars argue that knowledge is a fundamental source for retaining competitive advantage, as value creation depends fundamentally on the competence of a firm to create new knowledge (Nonaka and Toyama, 2002). Knowledge creation is based on conversion of two types of knowledge: tacit knowledge, which is constituent to the comprehensiveness of an individual’s consciousness, and explicit knowledge, which can be readily communicated. Based on the framework by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995), one of the most significant and cited models, the motivation of this research is to expand knowledge creation model from intra- to inter-organizational relationships theoretically and explore supply chain knowledge creation process in practice to examine the sequences of this extension. Studying three firms in the fashion industry, this thesis contributes to research on knowledge creation by taking a socio-technological perspective through a qualitative study of supply chain management. The research findings provide support for the proposed theoretical model in which social relationships and technology interact in the knowledge creation process to diminish supply chain complexities. While many supply chain relationships I observed appear to be influential in creating knowledge, one similarity among the cases here is that the effectiveness of the knowledge creation process has been limited due to the lack of harmony in employing knowledge resources. Knowledge creation process may be superficial due to the fact that they require a large revolution in work routines regarding the use of technology. Even where there is some degree of socialization, the process is partial because of incongruities between individuals understanding and corporate supply chain strategies.

In this essay I present a useful structure upon which to understand the problem of evil. In presenting this structure, which I call the Essential Principles Theory of Creation (EPTC), I endeavor to help both novice students and respected scholars more easily understand the points of tension and areas of similarity between the theories surrounding the problem of evil. I also argue that the Essential Principles Theory of Creation is an accurate depiction of how the world was made. In Part 1, I focus on Ultimate Logic, or the system in which God has chosen to adhere to. I distinguish Ultimate Logic from Human logic. In Part 2, I explain the EPTC in depth. I then go on to apply it to some of the responses to the problem of evil. I focus on Alvin Plantinga, Schelling, and finally Process philosophy. In Part 3, I directly discuss the utility of the EPTC. Based on the previous analysis, I argue that, at the very least, the EPTC is a useful tool in understanding the problem of evil.

There has been not so much written, as far as we researched, about the business creation process on the theoretical and practical basis together. While reading this thesis, readers will be acknowledged more about the main steps of the business creation process that Wine Essence followed during its establishment. With this research we tried to build an understanding on the topic with a special focus to the role of practice in the process. Three Wine Essence owners were interviewed. The interviews were semi-structured so that the factors we were looking for could be explored. The factors that were identified were afterwards further analyzed, together with the help of new gathered theory. In other words an abductive approach was used. We hope this research is profitable for companies or individuals who require relevant knowledge on this subject. It is also beneficial for researchers and students who are interested in business creation strategy in wine industry. Additionally we intend to provide some useful information to persons who are concerned about French wine market. We believe these findings to be valuable to encourage more research on the topic.

Although research and practice agree that visions are essential for organizations, the process of vision development remains elusive in academic literature. Presenting the "theory wave", this paper proposes a knowledge-based theory for developing sustainable visions to guide the creation of measures and actions in the future. Central to the theory wave, we suggest three features that characterize the development of sustainable visions; (1) learning from an envisioned future, (2) need orientation and (3) a wavelike process combining top-down and bottom-up approaches. Furthermore, by enhancing the creation of different kinds of knowledge, the theory-wave entails aspects of research on knowledge creation and thereby, it provides a new perspective on the field of vision development.

Streszczenie:
Bessel beams are optical fields which falls into the category of non-diffracting beams. Vector Bessel beams are vector beams possessing cylindrical symmetry. Cylindrically symmetric beams tend to have a tight focal point during propagation. The tight focal beam nature of vector Bessel beams makes them a good potential in various facets of science such as biological optical trapping, wireless communications, remote sensing, microscopy etc. In this research work, vector Bessel beams were generated using the phase of an Axicon that was encoded into a spatial light modulator. Firstly, scalar Bessel beams which possess linear polarization were generated and converted to circularly polarized vector beams by the use of a q-plate. The orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes that are embedded in the vortex beams were detected using modal decomposition technique. This was implemented for both the scalar and vector case using a quarter wave plate. The measure of the degree of non-separability of the vector Bessel beams using tomographic quantum tools was also implemented where the density matrix was reconstructed. The concurrence and fidelity which explore the measure of vectorness of both scalar and vector Bessel beams were calculated from the density matrix. The obtained results show that the spatial modes and polarization are coupled in the vector case as expected.

Streszczenie:
Organizational knowledge creation is a multifaceted process, and thus its representation needs to have the potential to be easily linked with, i.e. connected, associated or related with and informed by or inform, the extensive literature on its different facets. These linkages are easier to be made if the representation is able to or has the potential to reflect these facets. This study focuses on two such facets - an innovation process and dynamic interactions. Organizational knowledge creation in its influential models has been approached from an innovation-process, learning-process or tacit/explicit knowledge perspective. The innovation-process models focus predominantly on innovation stages and activities, and inadequately reflect dynamic interactions across these stages, even though the innovation process, i.e. the process through which an innovative idea is translated into innovative outcomes, such as products, services and systems, has the potential to specifically reflect the knowledge creation process, i.e. the dynamic process through which an innovative idea, generated by an individual(s), is amplified, as well as crystallized and connected with an organization's knowledge system. Learning-process models emphasise learning processes per se, and are unable to reflect either dynamic interactions or an innovation process. Tacit/explicit knowledge models, being the most influential on the subject, focus predominantly on dynamic interactions, and inadequately reflect the innovation process. The inadequate reflection of the innovation process makes learning-process and tacit/explicit knowledge models difficult to be linked with extensive literature on innovations in terms of the divergent and convergent processes/activities, how these complement and conflict one another, and how their conflict is synthesised. This study approaches organizational knowledge creation from an innovation-process perspective.

Streszczenie:
This thesis consists of four essays on the determinants, the dynamics and the policy implications of simultaneous job creation and destruction in labour markets. Firstly, it proposes and solves a stochastic search model with endogenous job separation and it shows that the amplitude and time variation of job reallocation depend crucially upon the arrival rate of exogenous firing permissions. Tighter firing restrictions, albeit not directly relevant for differences in average unemployment rates, dramatically reduce the relative volatility of job creation and destruction. A parameterization of the model can rationalise cross-country differences in the cyclical behaviour of job creation and destruction. Secondly, it brings together aggregate data on job reallocation and labour market policy for nine OECD countries. It shows that long term unemployment and job reallocation are negatively correlated and that job reallocation is lower in countries that offer limited benefit for a limited period of time. Thirdly, it studies the role of time-consuming search in generating the size distribution of firms and the dynamics of firm-level turnover. It solves a dynamic matching model where the joint distribution of wages and employment results from interacting idiosyncratic shocks, firm-level asymmetries in job creation and destruction and time-consuming search on the part of workers. Theoretical results offer a structural interpretation of existing empirical evidence on firm-size wage differentials and point out novel empirical implications. Finally, it measures the relation between job flows and establishment size applying econometric techniques best suited for analysing the dynamics of large cross-sections. Using a balanced panel from the Mexican Manufacturing sector it finds no evidence of small establishments converging toward the mean, thus no evidence of convergence.

Streszczenie:
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
This thesis explores phenomena surrounding the creation of knowledge, employing a multidisciplinary approach. To start with a view on the physical location of knowledge is discussed. This helps highlight the problem of defining knowledge and simultaneously introduces a set of fundamental and conceptual questions about the phenomena surrounding the creation of knowledge . The set of questions are then focussed on the process of knowledge creation. The investigation starts in the field of archaeology, in particular at the dawn of modern civilisation, with views on the earliest forms of knowledge creation. From there the investigation moves on to aspects of contemporary neurology. This allows for a comparison between humans from the ancient past with humans of today thereby identifying a neurological link between these periods. Based on current research within the field of behavioural neurology it is posed that knowledge creation is a process initiated by the impact of electromagnetic fields on the brain. A review of the medical research within the neurological sciences on the effects of electromagnetic field stimulation shows it to be effective as a treatment modality, a behavioural modifier, a suppressor and facilitator of cognition, as well as a sensory modulator. The interaction of the brain with electromagnetic fields is shown as a form of transduction similar to that of regular sensory transduction. Since the transduction of electromagnetic stimuli can functionally modulate sensory reception, cognition, behaviour and some neurological conditions, the creation of sensory perception, cognition, behaviour and neurological conditions (all phenomena surrounding knowledge creation) can be shown as functionally dependant on the electro-chemical process of ferromagnetic transduction (magneto reception). The ferromagnetic transduction model may then be seen as the sensory mechanism that initiates and modulates the process of knowledge creation. The modulation of this process is revealed cognitively in savants, behaviourally in some of the greatest thinkers in history and on a planetary scale as a force of nature. The implications of these findings is that if the keys to the creation of knowledge have been found, great care needs to be taken when deciding to implement any type of artificial or natural modulation to neural firing rates not only because of the total effect modulation can have on the individual but also because of the social consequences resulting from those who wish to socially discriminate according to the ability of and beliefs arising from the knowledge creating process.

This research is towards the advancement of filmosophy as a progressive new approach to how we think about, and through, film. This explorative research aims to introduce, contextualise, and expand upon the thoughts and writings of Daniel Frampton, as found in his 2006 manifesto: Filmosophy. In order to provide a suitable platform from which to introduce Frampton’s contemporary concepts (i.e. ‘filmind’ and ‘fluid film-thinking’), this paper first outlines and discusses the various ways in which philosophy and film are said to overlap, culminating in a critical discussion of ‘film-as-philosophy’ in terms of the implications it posits for providing innovative philosophical contributions through uniquely cinematic means (the ‘problem of paraphrase’). This literature review concludes by presenting and discussing filmosophy and its major tenets as both an appropriate extension of the current canon, and as a potentially productive new paradigm through which both film and philosophy can be critically considered and advanced.

The subject of study in this thesis is a game-theoretic model for decentralized network creation by selfish agents. These agents aim to create a connected network among themselves which maximizes their individual connection quality. Links in the network are costly and therefore agents try to find a trade-off between their cost spent on creating edges and their cost incurred by communicating within the network. This model was proposed a decade ago by Fabrikant, Luthra, Maneva, Papadimitriou and Shenker with the goal of understanding real networks which emerge from the interaction of selfish entities without explicit central coordination, e.g. the Internet or social networks. We contribute to this research endeavor in many ways by considering these so-called Network Creation Games from three perspectives. Our first point of view on these games is the approximation perspective. We analyze which networks are created by very simple computationally bounded selfish agents and how these networks compare to networks built by agents having unlimited computational resources. The second point of view is the dynamics perspective. We turn the model into a sequential version and focus on the process of selfish network creation. For this, we investigate whether natural dynamics like best response dynamics are guaranteed to converge to an equilibrium of the game and if so, how this convergence process may be sped up. We complete the treatment of Network Creation Games with our third point of view: the structure perspective. We provide new structural insights for several equilibrium concepts and introduce new tools which shed light on the structure of equilibrium networks for high edge-cost.

Bazaki, Eirini. "The effect of relational elements and co-creation of value on brand extension acceptance". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4373/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis aims to broaden the spectrum of brand extension acceptance literature, largely defined by categorisation theory, and bring to light alternative and complementary criteria for predicting brand extension success. To achieve this, the theoretical framework of this study replicates the principal model in brand extension acceptance (Aaker and Keller 1990) and extends it by introducing the concepts of virtual brand tribal communities, consumer-brand relationships, and co-creation of value, which originate in relationship marketing and service-dominant (S-D) logic. The thesis considers brand extension acceptance criteria within the increasingly important paradigm of S-D logic (Vargo and Lusch 2004). The present study uses a mixed method research design in order to address the research objectives of this study, enhance the robustness of the study and improve the level of reliability of the research findings. The qualitative data from the study served to deepen understanding of the research concepts and to construct the research instrument. The quantitative data were analysed to test the research hypotheses, and provide measurable results that can be projected to a larger population; the data were collected through an online survey with European consumers in the entertainment goods sector (specifically, video games). The present study found that the factors introduced by relationship marketing and the S-D logic explain a high proportion of variance on extension acceptance of joint co-creation and high consumer-low company co-creation products. Major contributions of the study include the development of a more holistic framework of brand extension acceptance; along with the adoption of the S-D logic which establishes the existence of relational and co-creative parameters in the evaluation of brand extension products. In terms of theory, the thesis contributes to the conceptual development of the virtual brand tribal community and consumer-brand relationship concept; and provides empirical support for their dimensionality and impact on brand extension acceptance. Similarly, at a theoretical level the thesis brings together two dimensions of the co-creation of value concept which were previously found dispersed in the literature, and thus provides empirical support for the effects of the level of co-creation construct. Concluding remarks acknowledge the limitations of the thesis and propose avenues for future research.

Smith, Christopher S. "Divisional strategy : value creation and relatedness within the multidivisional firm". Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4287/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
From an economic perspective the value of a group of related businesses under one management is derived from the potential for synergy, based on the exploitation of underlying economies of scope. To realise this inherent economic value, organisational theorists have argued that a purposively cooperative pattern of structures, systems and processes must be put in place. Divisions of modem multidivisional companies are internal, quasi-corporations of related businesses and, as such, theoretical economic/organisational rationales would posit divisions as cooperative enterprises. Using a sample of divisions purposively chosen to comprise businesses that were highly related, this thesis set out to explore the extent to which divisional managing directors expressed views and initiated organisational dynamics consistent with a cooperative perspective. Semi-structured interviews with senior divisional personnel in 12 divisions and with business and functional level staff in 2 of these provided the prime source of data which served as a basis from which a case study was written for each division. The cases were analysed in terms of the membership benefits (value) the divisional managing director was attempting to optimise for the component businesses and the extent to which he expressed a cooperative orientation and was overseeing cooperative structures, processes and systems. Two categories of division are identified. The 'cooperative' grouping is consistent with the theoretical view of economies of scope and cooperative structures but a larger number of divisions are categorised as 'non-cooperative' with perspectives, systems etc. consistent with a traditional M-form orientation of autonomous, non-interacting businesses. Reasons for this mismatch of theory and practice are discussed with the existence of non-cooperative divisions being explained as the consequence of a variety of organisational contingencies. Implications for divisional management and practice in multidivisional firms are suggested.

Do alliance portfolios matter? How do resources accessed from multiple simultaneous strategic alliances with different partners affect value creation and value appropriation? Do alliance portfolios explain heterogeneity across firms with respect to the value that they derive from entering into new strategic alliances? This dissertation builds on insights from the resource-based view of the firm and the strategic behaviour and competitive dynamics literature and advances a theoretical model that addresses value creation and appropriation in firms that access resources through multiple simultaneous inter-firm alliances with different partners. The model illustrates that value creation on the alliance portfolio level is a function of the value created from synergistic resource combinations involving resources accessed from different partners as well the value destroyed by incompatibilities between a focal firm's resource combinations and those deployed by its partners. Based on this theoretical model, empirically testable hypotheses are developed in a marginal setting, in which a multilaterally connected firm adds one new strategic alliance to its alliance portfolio. The hypotheses are tested using an event study method approach and data from the global airline industry on code share agreements formed between 1994 and 1998. The results show that the market on one side rewards firms entering into strategic alliances with partners that possess complementary resources and that contribute resources that cannot only be combined with firms' own but also existing relational resources and that are compatible with the firms' alliance portfolios. On the other side, results show that the market penalizes firms entering into alliances that contribute resources that are alliance portfolio incompatible in the sense that they create a competitive conflict with some of the existing alliance partners. The findings of the empirical part of this dissertation support the view that alliance portfolios affect the performance of firms entering into strategic alliances. This study concludes that resources accessed through inter-firm alliances should not only be evaluated on their standalone and dyadic attributes but also in the context of alliance portfolios.

Streszczenie:
The primary concerns of mathematics educators are learning and teaching mathematics. It is, therefore, natural to ask "what implications and benefits might there be if learning were perceived as a risk-taking event?" (Atkinson, 1957, p. 266). The underlying motivation of this study is to analyze the risks students take in the mathematics classroom and how risk influences student creation of meaning and development of understanding. I define risk in the mathematics classroom to be any observable act that entails uncertain outcome. The research presented here focuses on a table of four students: Andrew, Carina, Kam, and Mark as they grapple with the mathematical uncertainties inherent in the Ticket Line Task. In analyzing student work and development of mathematical understanding, I identify risks that students take and the benefits they claim result from doing so. Contextualized Risk Theory (CRT) is introduced to improve our understanding of the risks students take in learning mathematics in a student-centered classroom where students exercise personal agency in mathematical problem solving. Findings include characterization of risks these students took, significant student mathematical activity, student enjoyment of their work, student development of personal understanding of purposes and meanings of specific mathematics, and students achieving mathematical success as defined by the researcher and the participants.

The economic and financial crisis hit the US, British and Euro economies, in the post 2007 time. The activity of central banks gained new contours, in response to the markets turmoil, and unconventional measures were set up. Central banks? monetary base expanded, in defiance of orthodox reasoning. In crisis, the agents? errors proved the errors of theory, and vice-versa. Money is still a veil for the neoclassical mainstream, whereas the European austerity talk is all about the euro currency. Here will be made a reassessment of the theory of money and added a proposal for the creation of a common European Treasury, aimed at state-debt restructuration and application of economic regulation on base-money capital access.

Streszczenie:
The capability of the organisation in capturing customer value of experience (VoE) has led to continuous social interaction and spawned innovative ways to collaborate and co-create with the customers. This notion of reciprocal engagement is referred to as social co-creation. The co-creation paradigm represents value and is referred to as a function of experience other than the product itself. However, there is a critically needs for the organisation to formulate a 'value capture strategy' through the lens of social co-creation. It is evident that the fundamental question of the causal relationship between social media and co-creation has not been fully explained. The research developed a value capture framework in order to have a clear need to understand the various perceptions of four important conditions, social co-creation, customer engagement, engagement platform and organisation capability on value capture. The theoretical aspect of 'Absorptive Capacity Theory (ACT)' is used to demonstrate the organisational capability in order to recognise, identify, assimilate and implement the VoE in the organisation as part of competitive advantage along with existing of social technologies. In this respect, an original conceptual framework was formulated based on evidence within the current literature where a series of constructs are reported to guide the empirical fieldwork in identifying a 'value capture strategy'. The research adopted a qualitative methodology for the data collection approach which consequently enabled an exploratory and interpretive investigation. This included three pilot studies, twentyeight semi-structured interviews and one validation phase with experienced senior managers involved in co-creation within the technology and services industry who were regarded as valid respondents. The findings addressed external and internal conditions of value capture framework for VoE as a result of the analysis. The external condition focuses on organisation capability in recognising a customer active participation with the engagement platform. The internal condition enables an organisational strategy to assimilate and implement the VoE through co-creation initiatives in capturing the VoE. The research considers the organisation role as an actioner purposes on using a social co-creation for direct communication as part of the organisations practice. 9 The study not only contributes to the knowledge of social co-creation generally, but also extending the needs for the organisation on considering the internal condition for the organisation to identifies the VoE from customer participation. With that regards, the social co-creation engagement works as the interface before extending on cocreation stages which more direct, in-depth conversations with customers internally. The evidence is presented which confirms that a value capture strategy in cocreation is important for organisations stability and enhanced service delivery. By formulating a value capture framework, it creates a much deeper understanding of how each element were related and correlated to reach potential end result for the organisation. The implications of the study are that organisations should carefully consider the role of social media on engaging with the customers and propose to develop an online engagement network with their customers in order to have more direct and effective communication tools. This would allow them to have the right strategy on selecting the right customer to engage, for the right purposes at the right time is far more important from creating a massive communication.

Streszczenie:
Value co-creation enhances employers' branding through the engagement of organisations' corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and employees' behaviours, such as performance, loyalty and satisfaction. Although a growing body of research has explored the notion of value co-creation, the current understanding of the interrelationship between value co-creation and corporate social responsibility is underdeveloped. There is fierce academic debate surrounding the concept of value co-creation, calling for further theoretical and empirical work on this field. Furthermore, the concept of employer branding is still a nascent area in management and marketing scholarships and requires further conceptual nourishment. Although significant studies have covered the role of organisations and consumers in value co-creation resulting in employer branding, there has been little research to address the role of employees in value co-creation, dictating further assessment of their role in the process of value co-creation and participation in employer branding in a CSR context. Therefore, this thesis seeks to identify and analyse how, and to what extent, efforts to become socially responsible can co-create value for internal stakeholders and contribute to employer branding. As such, part of the theoretical foundation for this research is built on CSR. Subsequently, relevant conceptual avenues pertaining to the co-creation of value, corporate branding and employer branding are explored and analysed. An extensive literature review is undertaken to inform the robust development of an initially proposed conceptual framework of the main factors that impact upon this process. The proposed conceptual framework has set a broad guide for the researcher regarding the empirical fieldwork involved. The context for the research explores the notion of value co-creation within employer branding in the Omani hotel sector. To analyse value co-creation in depth, a qualitative interpretive multi-case study approach is adopted. The research also considers aspects of managerial philosophies and employees' perceptions regarding their organisations' current and future CSR activities, and how these activities impact value co-creation for stakeholders. The findings indicate that value co-creation has three major elements - it is dynamic and iterative, it requires dialogical interactions among various parties, and it leads to dualistic outcomes. The adoption of CSR increases the employees' satisfaction, whereas a lack of understanding of the CSR activities leads to the co-destruction of value, which in return affects the organisational turn-over in the long run. Therefore, creating awareness about the importance of the implementation of CSR is considered crucial, as it will benefit the organisation and improve the level of performance and loyalty of the internal stakeholders. The researcher proposes an original conceptual model on this tripartite nature of value co-creation and an analysis of how value co-creation can lead to the development of sustainable and socially responsible employer branding. An employee-oriented perspective towards value co-creation is introduced as an endeavour to enrich the area of research and address current conceptual deficiencies. The research also advances scholarship by critically assessing the role of employees as an independent but integral entity in the value co-creation process, establishing clear and robust links between CSR, value cocreation and employer branding.

This required to be interpreted the actions, behaviour of staff across . different instances and the organisational artefacts. In this way, it is understood, from ! internal organisational aspect, the meaning of various in use values (as assumptions that are possessed by organisational members) which is found to interrelate with, as enhance, the creation of knowledge in the form of new products. I The over-creating knowledge theory (empirically constructed by this thesis) advances the existing understanding about the creation of knowledge within environments characterised by great intensity in the construction of multiple project-innovations. The over-creating knowledge theory is mainly a study on the common behaviour of employees, at the individual, team and organisational level, showing which in use values and how they facilitate the creation of knowledge within creative organisations of small and medium size. Moreover, this research revealed the ambiguities and ambivalences that, the staff experience in the knowledge creation process that leads to innovation. Also, it is shown the mechanisms that are adopted by the aforementioned staff so as through their sense making (about the organisational reality) to subjugate the discourses of their actions. In addition, the over-creating knowledge theory explains that employees, by rationalising their strong belief in creating knowledge, systematically and persistently increase the quality of their work advancing their abilities and skills. Abstract Background: Value co-creation emerged at the beginning of the 21st century as a new way of understanding of value and its creation which occurs around individualized experiences of co-creation, leading to the creation of value that is exclusive to every person. In the essence of the concept of value co-creation lays the service-dominant logic of marketing. The investigation of value co-creation within brand communities has been emphasized in recent years. The practices of brand community members play a significant role in the value co-creation. Since Airbnb has never been looked as a brand community in the value co-creation literature, it remained unclear how value can be co-created through the practices of Airbnb community members. Purpose: How value is co-created between brand community members of Airbnb (between hosts and guests and guests themselves) through their practices in their experiences within the corporeal world? Method: In order to meet the purpose of this study, authors applied a qualitative method. Further, a netnographic strategy has been employed which led us to collect online-posted reviews of Airbnb guests from Airbnb website. Authors used purposive sampling by selecting the only guests who had the previous experience of stay in Airbnb accommodations in cases of on-site hospitality. 155 reviews of different guests from 31 accommodation profiles were collected in three waves of data collection. Moreover, a grounded theory coding was employed in order to analyze the data. Conclusion: We identified 14 sub-categories of value-creating practices that emerged under four major categories, namely: practice of sharing, practice of communicating, practice of saving, and practice of authenticating. Further, in the process of elaboration of main elements of practices (i.e. objects, doings, and meanings), we found general connections of these elements within the practices of hosts and guests (i.e. Airbnb community members) that helped us to understand how value is co-created in their experiences within the corporeal world.

In an era of continuing economic uncertainty public sector organizations face unprecedented challenges in resourcing increasingly complex missions. To meet these challenges public sector managers must look for innovative ways to resource essential missions and define public sector outcomes. The use of collaboration to create public value represents one way to provide effective and efficient service in this environment.

This study informs the subject of collaboration as a mechanism for creating public value by considering these concepts as a practical matter against actual events or programs involving the California Highway Patrol, a large State police agency with multiple missions and complex inter-agency relationships. The results of the study demonstrate a correlation between the strength of the collaborative effort and the results obtained, as well as the effect of circumstances on results. In identifying a common formula for evaluating these concepts, other public programs can be evaluated based on these contexts.

This research claims that transformative as opposed to informative learning cultures in higher education are capable of promoting student identity development alongside subject development. It makes a significant pedagogical, conceptual, methodological and contextual contribution to contemporary discussions regarding the nature and purpose of higher education in the 21st century. Transformative learning cultures, based on the pedagogical values of the teachers involved, create an identity workspace where student development is encouraged. This workspace reflects the active demonstration of empathy on the part of the teachers and is represented by an integrated pedagogical pattern consisting of four elements; the development of trust, (ii) the creation of collaborative and supportive communities where students have the opportunities to play different roles, (iii) active confrontation and challenge and (iv) the effective use of pedagogical time and space. A naturalistic, ethnographic methodology and case study approach was used to answer the question ‘what is going on here?’ with teachers of Foundation Degrees in two colleges across several subject disciplines in order to explore the nature and purpose of the learning cultures created. A conceptual framework was developed through the active integration of empirical research and scholarship resulting in a socio- cultural approach to understanding the learning contexts. This was supported by the collection of rich and varied data including photographs, observations and interviews with both teachers and students. Visualisation also supported the interpretation and representation of data in an accessible format. An activity theory approach was adopted to support an integrated analysis of the data, enabling the isolation and identification of the influence of teacher intentions, student dispositions, roles and relationships and how development was influenced by time, space and context.

In this thesis, we demonstrate an array of photodetection theory and techniques bridging the traditional discrete and continuous variable experimental domains. In quantum optics, the creation and measurement of states of light are intertwined and we present experimental architectures considering both aspects. We describe the measurement of mean photon numbers at optical sideband frequencies using homodyne detection. We use our technique to provide a direct comparison to photon-counting measurements and observe that our technique exhibits superior speed, dynamic range and mode selectivity compared to photon counters. Our analysis also rejects a semiclassical description of the vacuum state, with our observations supporting the quantum mechanical model. We create a new means of describing the detection ???signatures??? of multi-port networks of non-photon-number discriminating detectors. Our model includes the practical effects of loss and dark counts. We use this model to analyse the performance of the loopand balanced- time-division-multiplexed detector architectures in a projective measurement role. Our analysis leads us to describe a prescriptive recipe for the optimisation of each architecture. In light of contemporary technology, we conclude the balanced TDM detector is the better architecture. Our analysis is then extended to the tomographic reconstruction of an unknown optical state using multi-port photon-counting networks. Our new approach is successfully applied to the reconstruction of the photon statistics of weak coherent states and demonstrates reduced error and sensitivity to experimental parameter variations than established techniques. We report the development of a source of quadrature squeezed vacuum at 1550 nm, and characterise the squeezing observed at the first 3 free spectral ranges of the downconversion cavity. This is then used as a source of frequency-entangled photons for a projective photon subtraction operation described by our earlier theory. We propose a new hybrid time/frequency domain approach to homodyne detection and illustrate its application in characterising the prepared state. Our output state has a statistically significant single photon contribution and permits future experimentation in frequency basis quantum information.

Purpose – The purpose of this thesis is to explore the capability of Swedish regional public transport authorities (RPTAs) to organize public transport so that it stimulates the intended value creation process needed to increase users’ positive experience. Design/methodology/approach – This thesis utilizes an interpretative research approach. Two empirical studies, resulting in two papers have been used in this thesis. Study I consists of a quantitative Kano questionnaire with 930 respondents. Study II comprises a qualitative study with 11 semi-structured interviews. Both studies have been equally necessary to the results of this thesis. Findings – Public transport is one of the few public services with a mandate to attract users, and therefore, this thesis suggests that Swedish public transport organizations must understand how various services in multiple dimensions affect users’ preferences for public transport. With this understanding, public transport organizations can effectively and efficiently allocate resources and increase the appeal of future public transport. Such a focus demands a deep organizational knowledge and understanding of customer needs and detailed awareness of how the achievement of various requirements affects customers. This thesis shows that organizational structures are based on political comprises rather then the needs to solve coordination challenges and facilitate customers’ value creation. It is further argued that the organizational structures and personal or impersonal information processing mechanisms in Swedish public transport influence the search for information and subsequent organizational learning influencing the RPTAs’ capabilities to include and understand public transport users’ needs. This thesis offers insight into how public organizations, such as Swedish public transport authorities, can make decisions in structural design to learn from customer perceptions and adapt organizational policy accordingly.  In addition, I argue that RPTAs must employ both exploitative and exploratory learning to improve their capabilities and increase their efficiency and effectiveness. This thesis also provides a model to describe these relationships. Originality/value – Unlike previous studies, this thesis shows how organizational structures are decided based on political compromises rather than the need for coordination. This thesis offers insight into how public organizations, such as Swedish public transport authorities, can make decisions in structural design to learn from customer perceptions and adapt organizational policy accordingly.

This study examines value co-creation in networked service-for-service business relations. Current literature considers value through the experiential and circumstantial properties that permeates co-creation. Contemporary research also indicates the integration of resources and value facilitation as key aspects for co-creating value. This work suggests that value co-creation is a continuously changing practice that expands within on-going knowing and learning movements. The research collected the data of the study during the years of 2010-2012 in the city of Fortaleza – Brazil. Fieldwork concerned the implementation of IT systems in hospitals and clinics. The investigation comprised six case studies nested in two main cases. The first main case presents the perspective of the supplier side, while the second approaches a client organization. The methodology of the study, the case study ethnography, draws on cultural-historical activity theory and applies developmental work research in natural settings. Value co-creation in networked service-for-service relations emerges as multifaceted systems of diverging interests. Resource integration relates to questioning daily practices and envisioning potentialities. Interactions evolve through fast and distributed encounters that co-configure resolutions. In the context of multiple and diverging interests and contradictions, co-creating value refers to managing change. Knowing and learning how to co-create value consist in practicing transformational movements of navigating and interacting within multiple locations and participants in order to resolve contradictions in and between activity systems. The study identifies value co-creation as a dialectical system of practice. Contradictory elements hamper mutually benefiting relations at the same time that create possibilities for changes in the direction of co-creating value. The practice of value co-creation concerns questioning daily practices, knotworking value, and managing change. The central aspect of this practice concerns knowing and learning to accomplish these situated performances within the flow of daily market interactions.

The framework for investigating these experiences was Nonaka's (1994) theory of organizational knowledge creation, the crux of which is the mobilization and conversion of tacit (or experiential) knowledge. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed inductively. The findings showed that these teachers wanted to collaborate to implement inclusion, but the organizational structures and culture were not in place to promote this activity. Although Nonaka's (1994) theory has the potential to describe how teachers create knowledge through collaboration, it did not occur in this research. Practical implications and future research are discussed. Keywords: inclusion, collaboration, Nonaka, tacit knowledge, knowledge creation

Although the patent systems of the United States and Europe have become continuously more similar their underlying legal philosophy continues to be different. This study examines how the two patent philosophies emerged out of different social situations and why and how patent systems can develop similar formal arrangements without experiencing a similar harmonization of underlying philosophy. As patent laws are historically unique to western culture it provides a lens through which to observe its relative social appreciation of industry, technology, commerce, and the role of the law. This study argues that the two separate 'patent philosophies' emerged as results of unique historical situations and that the reason as to why they have been able to maintain their distinct natures is that a similar ideological pressure has not been present since. The patent law of the United States, which is based on an 'inventor philosophy', was the product of the ideological currents of the movement toward American independence. This philosophy is friendly to inventors and entrust them with all responsibility over their inventions. Its individualistic and democratic character resonated well with the country's anti-colonial and anti-monarchical political campaign. A similar ideological pressure to revise fundamental opinions on technology and law has not emerged since. Virtually all European nations are today part of the European Patent Organization which administers the world's only true regional patent office. This European system is based on an 'invention philosophy' which was designed in the late 19th century by German industrialists. This philosophy is anti-monopoly and sees the State as a guardian of the public benefits which arise from technological novelties. Due to German industrial efficiency, it was used to model European patent law. Although both philosophies have proved viable, the case of patent law suggests that the role of legal philosophy must be reduced. Apart from being crucial in the creation of a new legal system, this study argues for the need to drastically reconsider the relationship between substantive and formal law. Both patent philosophies have consistently lost importance over time to the point where they today support two formally very similar systems.

A Pact Sealed in Blood: The Creation of Blood Letters: An American Odyssey is a reflection on the project, writing, script and production phases of a student researched and written theatrical script, which debuted in the Shafer Street Playhouse on April 24, 2014 on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. This paper looks at the processes involved with the creation of that piece. The theatrical piece tells the tales of three men over the course of 150 years as each man goes through his own personal crucible. The first fights for his country and his family during the American Civil War. The second fights for his country and his love during World War Two. The third works for his country and searches for his family during bouts of political destruction, alcoholism, and lost love. The piece interweaves these three tales with a fourth, present day narrator, in an adaption of Homer’s The Odyssey. This paper looks at the research, development of the script, and the final product of that theatrical piece. It also delves into the author’s beliefs on the search for the human soul within writing and the importance of connection within that search. Finally, it is revealed that perhaps the greatest search lies within our own personal journey.

Streszczenie:
A large number of not for profit organisations use Web technologies for community building, to improve services offered to their public or to generate income. However, the Internet is not a universal panacea and between the hype and counter-hype on the benefits of Web technologies, it is clear there are limits. Some third sector organisations are failing to make the most ofWeb technologies. Thus, it is important to develop a clear understanding of the process of deriving value from those technologies within a not-forprofit environment. This thesis aims at' understanding the way organisational value can be derived from investments in Web technologies within the museum context. Two in-depth case studies of Web projects' implementation processes and their financial, as well as non financial outcomes within two UK museums are presented. The data presented in this thesis was collected through a variety of methods including semi-structured interviews, observation, document review and an evaluation of the two websites. A theoretical approach that takes into account orga~isational and cultural issues embedded in Web-based systems was used in order to uhderstand better the process of acquiring value from the Web activities of the two museums. Thus, a synthesised conceptual framework based on the 'Mangle of Practice' and the 'Limits to Value' model was used for data collection. While the theoretical framework equipped the researcher with a sound basis upon which data collection was conducted, the framework did not offer much assistance in the task of data analysis. For this purpose, techniques were adapted from grounded theory. The two case studies show that although limited resources and the challenges of dealing with the digital content are very important issues for museums, Web systems planning aligned to the museum strategy and assigning the responsibility for the monitoring of Web related initiatives to a senior manager with a broad view of the organisation, as well as the power to initiate changes can improve the value obtained from those initiatives.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the creation of character in the work of Theodor Fontane. Although he is repeatedly praised as a great writer of human character, there is no comprehensive analysis of how Fontane's characters work. This thesis is intended to fill this surprising gap in Fontane research. Its analyses do not focus on the author-text interaction as many traditional critical approaches do, but instead look at what takes place between the text and the reader. The first section, entitled 'Character in Theory', has two chapters presenting my concept of literary character. It draws on the findings of cognitive studies, including formerly neglected aspects such as affective reading and empathy. The second section, 'Character in Practice', contains four chapters. Chapter three demonstrates how our emotions can contribute to our understanding and what role is played by empathy. Chapter four shows the active role readers are required to play when putting together information about characters in Fontane's polyphonous novels. Chapter five focuses on character speech, and chapter six asks to what extent Fontane's characters can be seen to develop. The third section, 'Character in Context', takes a less hermeneutic approach. Chapter seven asks what our expectations of Realist characters are and how these influence our reading of Fontane. Chapter eight examines how our access to these characters has changed compared to the author's contemporary readership. Chapter nine presents an excursus, looking at the author's development from renditions of 'real' people to fictional characters. The last section compares this author's creations to the tentatively Modernist characters of Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks. My findings show that Fontane's characters demand and support a more active reading than Realism is usually given credit for. They suggest that the concept of Realist characters as largely descriptive creations needs to be examined critically.

Streszczenie:
This thesis consists of the production of an inter-active computer-based artwork, an analysis of its research outcomes, and an exploration of the theoretical issues that influenced the artistic practice. The artwork, Postcard from Tunis, is an Integrationist exploration of writing and its transformation at the human-computer interface. It is set in a personal portrait of Tunis, a city with a rich history of writing. The thesis starts with the theory of writing. The conventional view of real writing as representation of speech is shown to have serious limitations.Postcard from Tunis offers users who are not Arabic-literate the perception that there are actually no fixed boundaries between writing and pictures, as both are based on spatial configurations. User interaction with Postcard from Tunis, particularly rollover activity, creates a variety of dynamic signs that cannot be theorised by a bipartate theory of signs and that transcend a distinction between the verbal and the non-verbal altogether. Postcard from Tunis both extends Integrationist theory into writing and human-computer interaction and also uniquely articulates this integration of activities in a way that is impossible with written words on paper. The research asserts the validity of the Integrationist theory of writing, language and human communication and of uncoupling these from spoken words. A framework is outlined for future Integrationist research into icons and human-computer interaction.

Streszczenie:
Organizations operate in a dynamic environment in which they are faced with an ongoing dilemma of maximizing profit and meeting the demand from society to take social responsibility. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained an increase in interest with its intended aim of corporations taking responsibility for how the business affects the society within an economic, environmental and social perspective. However, its intended aim is being hindered by the idea of a trade-off between profit and social responsibility in CSR theory and practice. We suggest that social entrepreneurship can have an impact on CSR in moving beyond these trade-offs and can furthermore bridge the gap between business’ and society’s demands. Thereby, our thesis has the aim to investigate how CSR research can move beyond the presumed trade-offs through the impact of social entrepreneurship theory. For this purpose, we have chosen a conceptual research approach in order to build a conceptual model that can serve as a theoretical contribution and an inspiration for further practical use. The model suggests that components of social entrepreneurship can be linked to strategic CSR dimensions and, therefore, impact the outcome by creating both economic and social value.

Streszczenie:
This thesis analyzes the Turkish unemployment problem in the 2000-2011 period, in a broad and comparative perspective with unemployment problem in the Netherlands, Ireland and Argentina. However, periods of concern for these three countries and Turkey differ, because each country experienced severe unemployment problem in different time periods. The main objective of this thesis is to evaluate current policies dealing with unemployment problem in Turkey and suggest more effective policy alternatives, with reference to successful policies of other countries. It is found that current approach towards unemployment problem in Turkey is inadequate in many aspects
specifically there is no emphasis on job creating policies. Moreover, our discussions on the measurement of labour market indicators in Turkey and general characteristics of Turkish labour market showed that underemployment and marginally attached workers are neglected problems that have to be addressed in policymaking.
