Streszczenie:
Knowing the determinants of couple adjustment is a challenge, both for predicting this adjustment and for helping couples in therapy in the best possible way. We based this study on the Person’s Social Value Theory (Beauvois, J.-L. [1976]. The topic of social conduct evaluation. Connexions, 19, 7-30) which postulates that two dimensions – social utility and social desirability – support self- and other- descriptions. This study aimed to evaluate the way the evaluation of own social value within couple and the evaluation of social value within couple of the partner influence the dyadic adjustment of the spouses. In addition, we took into account the duration of the couples and the emotional competences of the spouses (using the PEC). Participants were the spouses of 152 voluntary heterosexual couples who completed a booklet of questionnaires. The results showed that the two dimensions of person’s social value within couple influence partners' dyadic adjustment but in a different way for men and women and according to the duration of the couples’ relationship. Furthermore, the effect of social value within couple seems to cover partially the classic effect of emotional competences on couple experience and satisfaction. The discussion underlines the relevance and interest of using the social value within the couple in the study of conjugal relationships as well as in counselling couples.

This study investigates the effect of in-law relationship on the marital adjustment of married couples by considering family-oriented Korean culture. Previous in-law studies did not consider the influence of another party who did not attend the survey due to sampling limitations. However, the marital adjustment of married couple and the satisfaction of the relationship with parents-in-law are two-way relationships that affect each other and are not one-sided relationships. By considering the non-independence of the couple’s data, Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) was utilized to examine the structural relationship between marital adjustment (marital satisfaction and marital stability) and in-law relationship quality (relationship satisfaction between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law for wives, relationship satisfaction between mother-in-law and son-in-law for husbands) of 203 married couples. Results indicated that a high satisfaction of wives’ in-law relationship increased personal marital adjustment as well as husbands’ marital adjustment. The husbands’ positive relationship with in-laws also increased personal marital adjustment and their wives’ marital adjustment. The results of this study can be used as basic data for program development and counseling for healthy in-law relationship as well as educational data for couples intending to marry.

Over the last decade, a substantial number of studies have focused on the role of personality traits and of the personality trait similarity/dissimilarity in partner selection and in predicting the quality of adult romantic relationships. The present study contributes to this general objective by investigating the correlations between levels of similarity/dissimilarity in partners’ personality profiles, analyzed through the Big Five dimensions, and levels of romantic relationship adjustment at different stage of a couple’s life course. A sample of Italian couples ( N = 92 couples; 184 individuals) completed the Big Five Questionnaire and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale. The results revealed that similarity was not directly related with romantic relationship adjustment. Similarity only affected adjustment in interaction with the length of relationship. Partners reporting high levels of similarity in conscientiousness and openness showed the highest levels of romantic relationship adjustment during the first years of their relationship, while showing lower levels of adjustment as the relationship progressed. The lower levels of romantic relationship adjustment fell within the length of relationship range spanning between 10 and 21 years. These results suggest the importance of considering the life cycle perspective when studying the impact of personality similarity on romantic relationships, as well as suggesting the need to analyze the relationship between personality factors and interpersonal processes in a deeper way particularly in counseling and therapeutic contexts.

AbstractThe thesis advanced in this essay is that couple relationship interventions are central to effective therapy with many adult clients. I begin by reviewing a body of evidence that demonstrates the significance of couple relationships in the lives of most adults. A range of circumstances are described in which effective therapy with adults needs to address the couple relationship, even when the couple relationship is not mentioned as a presenting issue. It is concluded that individual psychological adjustment often is best understood when conceptualised within the intimate interpersonal context of the couple relationship.

Counselors may be unaware of the physiological underpinnings of couple relationships. Understanding emotions as physiological responses resulting from autonomic arousal, we measured couples’ heart rate across a series of typical conversations. Forty-nine heterosexual and one lesbian couple completed measures of emotional reactivity and dyadic adjustment. We used pulse oximetry to record individual heart rate through three 5-min conversations. Using multilevel dyadic growth models, we found emotional arousal and reactivity-predicted heart rate among women, and greater relationship length predicted heart rate among men. We additionally found couples synchronous with respect to relationship satisfaction and emotional reactivity but not to physiological responsivity. This study contributes to counselors’ understanding of women’s physiological reactivity, male responses in longer relationships, and how to support couples when there is potential for relationship conflict.

Although the postpartum period is typically considered a joyful time for new parents, this period calls for a reprioritization of daily responsibilities and tasks which may not necessarily align with the egalitarian split many couples envision. Dissatisfaction in this new role may negatively affect individual and couple well-being. This study examined the association between role satisfaction and postpartum distress symptoms or relationship adjustment from 73 opposite-sex couples 4- to 12-week postpartum. Both women and men reported a desire that men be more involved in household, child care, and family decision-making tasks. Actor–partner interdependence models examined the within-individual and cross-partner associations between role satisfaction and individual or couple well-being. As hypothesized, women’s role satisfaction positively predicted both partners’ relationship adjustment. These findings shed light on women’s role satisfaction as a potentially important factor underlying couple’s well-being postpartum.

The importance of family functioning in the development of child and adult psychopathology has been widely studied. However, the relationship between partners’ adjustment and family health is less studied. This paper aims to describe and summarize research that analyzes the relationship between partners’ adjustment and family health. A systematic review was conducted in the PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Lilacs, Psicodoc, Cinahl, and Jstor databases. Inclusion criteria were as follows: articles published from 2012 to 2019 in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Data were extracted and organized according to the family health model: family climate, integrity, functioning, and coping. Initially, 835 references were identified, and 24 articles were assessed for quality appraisal. Finally, 20 publications were selected. Results showed that couple adjustment was an important factor that triggered the emotional climate of the family, was positively intercorrelated to parenting alliance or coparenting, and contributed to family efficacy and help when facing stressful life events. Findings revealed a consensus about the relationship between couple dyadic adjustment and family health. The results could orientate interventions to promote well-being and to increase quality of life and family strength. Health professionals should thoroughly study couple relationships to identify risk factors, assess family skills, and promote family health.

The main purpose of the current study was to evaluate the relationship between early abusive experiences (sexual abuse, parental violence, and witnessing parental violence) and subsequent couple adjustment with a theoretical model that incorporates attachment and psychological distress as mediator variables. We specifically examined the variability in long-term psychosocial characteristics of child abuse survivors across women and men. A representative sample of French-Canadian couples composed of 632 men and women completed measures of child abuse, attachment, psychological distress, and dyadic adjustment. Structural equation analyses showed that, for both women and men, sexual abuse was related to dyadic adjustment through anxiety about abandonment and psychological distress. For men, experiencing physical or psychological violence was associated with dyadic adjustment through psychological distress. For women, there was an indirect relationship between witnessing physical violence and dyadic adjustment through abandonment anxiety. Differences between men and women in the long-term adjustment to childhood sexual abuse were small and not consistent with a gender-specific model of psychosocial repercussions.

The goal of this study was to widen the scope of the social component of family sustainability. The fundamental goal of this non-experimental, quantitative study was to look at the links between parenting correlates, personality characteristics, marital satisfaction, and well-being in couples, as well as to construct explanatory prediction models for relational and marital satisfaction. The study focused on the effects of personality traits, parental self-efficacy, and attachment to marital and relational satisfaction. The test instruments applied were: the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised, Marital Adjustment Test, Couple Satisfaction Index, Relationship Satisfaction Scale, Family Distress Index, Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (adapted to the role of a parent), Mowen’s Personality Scale, and demographic data. A total of 238 Romanians answered the online survey, recruited based on a convenience sampling method. Participants in this research were individuals who were both married and had at least one child. The main findings show that agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, anxious and avoidant attachment, and marital adjustment predict the satisfaction in the relationship, and openness partially mediates the association between marital adjustment and relationship satisfaction. Parental self-efficacy appears to influence the association between relationship satisfaction and marital satisfaction. An increased parental self-efficacy score predicts an increased relationship satisfaction and marital satisfaction. The higher the parental self-efficacy, the higher the satisfaction in the relationship, which leads to an increase in satisfaction in the couple. These results show that marital adjustment and adaptation are related to relational satisfaction, and these relationship are partially mediated by an individual’s openness. Despite some limitations, the current study significantly contributes to couples therapies and interventions in terms of physical and mental health, and the study provides insight into the experiences and perspectives of married individuals with children in Romania.

This thesis describes a program of research which aimed to identify the extent to which couple and stepfamily variables were associated with couple relationship adjustment and stability in stepfamily couples. Two studies were conducted. Study 1 consisted of 63 stepfamily couples who were in a committed relationship (married or cohabiting) and who had earlier taken part in an intervention program. It was hypothesised that positive couple relationship outcomes could be predicted by low couple aggression, high couple negativity, low couple withdrawal, high parenting disagreement, and high dysfunctional parenting over a 5-year period. The results did not support the hypotheses possibly due to low power in the design. In Study 2, 122 stepfamily couples who been living together (married or cohabiting) as a stepfamily were assessed on couple and stepfamily factors, and these were tested for their association with couple relationship adjustment and stability, using both self-report questionnaires and interview data. As predicted, stepfamily factors accounted for variance in couple stability above that accounted for by couple factors. Furthermore, stepfamily factors were associated with couple stability independent of couple adjustment. The influence of stepfamily couple relationship adjustment and stability seem distinctive from first-marriage couples. It was concluded that stepfamily relationship education programs for stepfamilies should address the unique needs of stepfamilies such as parenting education for inexperienced stepparents, the development of positive stepparent-stepchild relationships, and the building of stepfamily cohesion.

Although Prochaska and DiClemente (1984) considered the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) to be relevant to couples therapy, there is a paucity of research in this area. Understanding how couples initiate change in their relationship still proves difficult due to barriers in the collection of couple level data and the fact that the majority of research on the TTM is individualistic in nature (Fowers, 2001; Schneider, 2003). Schneider (2003) reported that research suggests a relationship between change processes and relationship adjustment in couples. To my knowledge this study is the first test of the reliability and correlates of relationship change, beyond Schneider’s initial work. The purpose of the present study was to examine how individual adjustment and readiness to change affect relationship adjustment. Data were collected from a sample of 389 married and cohabitating individuals using a self-report survey. Readiness to change was found to partially mediate the relationship between individual well-being and relationship adjustment. This link underscores the concept of women as health gatekeepers of the family. The present study validates research on the TTM with individuals but draws further attention to the idea that changing a dyadic relationship is not an individual process.

Streszczenie:
Two studies were undertaken to explore how aspects of the couple relationship might play a role in women's experience of prenatal diagnosis (PND). Both studies involved women referred to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) for prenatal genetic counseling due to advanced maternal age (AMA). The first study examined the role of the partner during the genetic counseling session by comparing 123 women who attended the session alone with 222 women accompanied by their partners, on the basis of self-report measures completed immediately prior to and following the session. Accompanied women reported somewhat higher levels of state anxiety and PND-related decisional conflict before the session than did those who attended alone (p < .05). The presence of the partner could thus reflect a support-seeking coping strategy employed by women to cope with feelings of indecision and anxiety surrounding the issue of prenatal diagnosis. Alternatively, it is possible that attendance by the partner contributed to anxiety and uncertainty among women. The second study sought to clarify the reasons for partner attendance or non-attendance at the genetic counseling and testing appointments, and to explore how certain relationship variables might relate to women's individual and marital adjustment following PND. Ninety-five women completed self-report measures prior to genetic counseling (Time 1), during the waiting period for PND test results (Time 2), and after normal results were known (Time 3). Many women reported that their partners attended the appointments on the basis of the couple's view of PND as a shared experience, or to provide emotional and decisional support for the women. The most common reason for partner non-attendance was work-related conflicts. At Time 2, distress was predicted by the degree to which women approached the PND decision jointly with their partners, and marital adjustment was predicted by women's satisfaction with the support received from their partners. Marital adjustment at Time 3 was predicted by earlier levels of partner agreement about PND-related issues. The association between pre-counseling partner agreement and Time 3 well-being was mediated by women's use of relationship-focused coping (partner support seeking and empathic responding) and moderated by women's satisfaction with their partners' support. Joint decision-making at Time 1 was linked to Time 3 adjustment indirectly, through women's satisfaction with their partners' support. Finally, women's use of avoidant coping strategies mediated the association between perceived partner support and Time 3 adjustment outcomes. Results suggest that aspects of the couple relationship have the potential to facilitate or hinder women's experience of PND counseling and testing, thus highlighting the potential benefits of focusing at least a portion of the genetic counseling session on couple-related issues.

Relationship separation is prevalent in Western society and ongoing problems for adults and children are common, resulting in high personal and social costs. A literature review revealed that no existing measure of separation adjustment assessed multiple domains of separation adjustment, and was psychometrically sound. Additionally, a literature review revealed that few studies have investigated change in separation adjustment over time using cognitive predictors. This thesis is a program of research investigating separation adjustment in recently separated adults. Five studies were conducted with three main aims: (1) to develop a multidimensional, psychometrically reliable and valid measure of separation adjustment; (2) to assess the trajectory of separation adjustment over time; and (3) to test the hypothesis that certain cognitive variables predict the trajectory of separation adjustment. A conceptualisation of separation adjustment was developed consisting of the following five domains: Connection to the former partner, loneliness and emotional negativity (referred to as lonely negativity), parenting negotiation, parent-child relationship and general psychological adjustment. The Problems After Separation Test (PAST) was developed to reflect the first four of the five domains. In Study 1, 268 participants separated for up to 18 months, were recruited to assess the factor structure and internal consistency of the PAST. In Study 2, 209 participants were recruited to assess the stability of the factor structure, and temporal stability. In Study 3, participants from Study 2 were used to obtain convergent and divergent validity. The results of the first three studies showed that separation adjustment is a multidimensional construct, and that the PAST is a reliable and valid measure of separation adjustment. Study 4 aimed to assess the trajectory of separation adjustment over a 6 month period using the PAST and another measure of general psychological adjustment. Participants from both Study 1 and 2 were used, and a longitudinal cohort sequential design was employed. The sample consisted of three cohorts: those separated for up to six months, those separated between 6 and 12 months, and those separated between 12 and 18 months. The results showed that connection to the former partner, lonely negativity, and general psychological adjustment improved over time, but parent-child relationships and parenting negotiation were stable, and chronic parenting problems were common. Men showed greater parent-child relationship problems than women, possibly because men were most likely to be the non-resident parent. Participants separating from a de facto relationship reported only slightly more problems on lonely negativity, general psychological distress and parent-child relationships than participants separating from a marriage. Study 4 also provides information on clinical and reliable change, suggested cut-offs that might be used to define normal, moderate and severe adjustment problems, and attrition analyses. Using participants from Study 2, Study 5 aimed to assess cognitive predictors of change on connection to the former partner, lonely negativity and psychological distress. The cognitions assessed at each data collection were dysfunctional attitudes, attachment style, causal attributions, threat appraisal, and self-efficacy. Causal attributions were obtained by asking participants "For three minutes tell my about the problems you had in your relationship and what lead to the separation". The responses were transcribed, a coding manual was devised, and inter-rater reliability of coding was good. Cross-sectionally, the majority of cognitions were associated with one or more domains of separation adjustment, however longitudinally, cognitions did not predict change in separation adjustment over a 6-month period. Cognitions themselves were found to be somewhat variable, which is not surprising given that stressful life events, such as relationship separation would alter cognitions. Other variables that might be responsible for changes in separation adjustment trajectory are discussed. The results of the combined 5 studies have both theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically, separation adjustment is a construct made up of distinct domains which have different trajectories. Connection, lonely negativity and psychological adjustment generally represent transient problems. Although the current research found that a non-trivial minority of participants continued to show distress on these domains two years post separation. On the other hand, parenting negotiation and the parent-child relationship was a chronic problem for many separated people, particularly men. Practically, the results of the current research suggests that most therapeutic attention should be directed towards improving parenting adjustment post separation. Limitations of the current research and suggestions for future research are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to explore the marital adjustment of older adult couples with breast cancer, prostate cancer, and couples who have experienced neither. Participants were 64 couples in which at least one of the spouses was over 55 years of age, including 19 breast cancer couples, 20 prostate cancer couples, 25 couples who had experienced neither of these cancers. Most participants were young-old, Protestant, Caucasians from a high socioeconomic class. The breast cancer and prostate cancer participants had completed treatment an average of 39.5 months prior to participation. The methodology was a mail survey. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire for Older Adults (MSQFOP) (Haynes et al., 1992), Primary Communication Inventory (PCI) (Navran, 1967), Miller Social Intimacy Scale (MSIS) (Miller & Lefcourt, 1982), and the Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS) (Hudson et al., 1981).There were no differences in the amount of discordance between the couples groups' level of marital satisfaction, communication, intimacy, and sexual satisfaction. In addition, there were no differences in the level of marital satisfaction, communication, intimacy, and sexual satisfaction between the participant groups. There was a significantly greater correlation between the prostate cancer couples' scores on the ISS than the correlation between the breast cancer couples' scores and the scores of the couples who had not experienced breast cancer or prostate cancer. The level of marital satisfaction, communication, intimacy, and sexual satisfaction reported was similar to that of the normative samples. There was no difference between the marital adjustment of the cancer couples and older couples who had experienced neither type of cancer. These results are good news for breast and prostate cancer survivors, and professionals. Older adults may be better able to incorporate the experience of cancer into their lives or are better prepared for chronic illness through anticipatory socialization. The high degree of agreement between the prostate cancer spouses on the ISS may be related to the sexual dysfunction that frequently accompanies treatment for this cancer. Future research should be qualitative and longitudinal and continue to explore the psychosocial implications of prostate cancer.

Based on negative publicity related to the financial turmoil and the migration crisis one could perhaps classify Greece as a problematic EU partner. This contribution argues that this static approach does not fully describe the complexity of EU-Greece relations. Looking at the historical evolution of this relationship from a more macroscopic point of view it identifies periods of convergence and divergence. It reinstates the limits of the European adjustment pressures in inducing modernization and accounts for the crises episodes by reference to some idiosyncratic features of the domestic sociopolitical contestation. The contribution discusses the valuable lessons learned by the handling of the crises both for Greece and the EU. It stresses that the Greek public disenchantment with the EU that is inexorably linked with the extreme societal burden of the adjustment process is not an isolated phenomenon. Like in many other EU countries, much of the criticism is directed toward the current scope and direction of European integration rather than on the merits and value of the integration venture per se. What is urgently required for the whole European demos is a new “grand bargain” that will provide the necessary vision for the years to come. This will condition the future evolution of the EU-Greece relationship.

Swedish local government has a strong position within the unitary nation state. At first sight, this could be understood as a paradox if decentralization and central control are treated as contradictory concepts. However, in countries such as Sweden, with a relatively generous welfare system that emphasizes equal access, strong local and regional governments can be seen as means of avoiding the pitfalls of rigorous standardization by allowing adjustment of national welfare services to local circumstances. This requires legitimate, responsible, and capable local and regional politicians. Subnational government also has additional tasks as providers of locally generated collective services, such as road maintenance, parks, recreation, and cultural facilities. The contributions in this section are all based on the most recent research in the field. They discuss Swedish subnational government with regard to its internal workings, horizontal relationships, reform trajectories, and position in relation to other systems of local and regional government.

Reorganizing Government seeks to transform how policymakers and scholars understand relationships between government institutions, and offers a pioneering model for constructing and assessing government authority. Regulation is frequently less successful than it could be. This is at least partly because the relationships among regulatory institutions are poorly understood and regulatory structures are routinely poorly designed. The book advances a framework for assessing how governmental authority may be structured along three dimensions-centralization, overlap, and coordination-and demonstrates how differentiating among these dimensions and among particular governmental functions (e.g., standard setting, enforcement) better illuminates the tradeoffs of organizational alternatives. It illustrates these neglected dimensional and functional aspects of interjurisdictional relations through six in-depth explorations involving securities and banking regulation, food safety, environmental protection, and terrorism prevention. In each case study, the authors explore how differentiating among dimensions, and among particular governmental functions, better illuminates the advantages and disadvantages of available structural options. (Re)Organizing Government thus offers a way for officials and scholars to evaluate both adopted and contemplated allocations of authority and to structure intergovernmental authority more effectively. It uses the lens of climate change, an emerging and vital global policy challenge, to illustrate the practical value of applying the book's novel analytical framework to future reorganization efforts. The book concludes by proposing an "adaptive governance" infrastructure that provides a way for policymakers to embed the creation, evaluation, and adjustment of the organization of regulatory institutions into the democratic process itself.

This book sets a new trajectory for considering the intertwined relationship between theology and law. Through close readings of a range of popular Hollywood speculative fiction films—Shyamalan’s Unbreakable, Snyder’s Man of Steel, Lucas’s and Disney’s Star Wars, Nolan’s The Dark Knight & The Dark Knight Rises, Proyas’ I, Robot, Nolfi’s The Adjustment Bureau and Jackson’s The Hobbit—Timothy Peters explores how fictional worlds, particularly those that ‘make strange’ the world of the viewer, can render visible and make explicit the otherwise opaque theologies of modern law. The book offers a key contribution to the fields of cultural legal studies, law and film and law and theology by considering speculative fiction (superheroes, science fiction, fantasy) as a way of revealing the theologies of modern law and legal theory. The overall narrative of the work marks a course from antagonism to reconciliation, from autonomy to reciprocity and from law to love. Throughout the work, the book draws on resources within the Christian theological tradition’s critical engagement with law, as a means for rethinking and reimagining our post-secular legal modernity—enabling both a deactivating and fulfilling of the law. In exploring speculative film’s estranged accounts of the mythos of modernity and modern law, it articulates an alternative theological jurisprudence based on a love that takes us beyond the law.

This study builds on the Taylor and Brown theory of positive illusions to attain a more in-depth understanding of the relative influence of perceptual congruence and enhanced perception (positive illusions) on relational satisfaction. A sample of 812, organized into 406 subject-partner pairs of 203 married couples, 100 dating couples, and 103 same-sex roommate dyads completed questionnaires. Each subject rated him- or her-self on six personal qualities (social skills, emotional stability, agreeableness, hostility, depression, and spirituality) and four temperaments (Dominance, Influence, Supportiveness, Conscientiousness). Then they took tests that measured the same qualities to compare with the self-ratings. On another questionnaire, each partner rated the subject on the same 10 qualities. Both subjects and partners completed the Dyadic Adjustment Scale as the measure of relational satisfaction. Primary findings discovered that in most cases, positive illusions diminish relational satisfaction. The only setting in which benefit occurs is when partners rate subjects higher than subjects rate themselves. Congruence between ratings (whether subject-test, partner-test or subject-partner) is strongly associated with relational success. Findings contrast with the Taylor and Brown theory and provide a more nuanced look at the influence of enhancement or congruence.

Streszczenie:
The assertion that social relationships contribute to a child’s psychological adjustment, health, and overall well-being is commonly accepted and supported by numerous investigations in the clinical child literature (Erdley, Nangle, Newman, & Carpenter, 2001). A wide variety of social phenomena have been examined, including the association between social and emotional adjustment, social network structure, how children are perceived and accepted by their peer group, and children’s ability to establish friendships and close relationships. Given the importance of peer relationships to emotional well-being, it is surprising that this subject has not received greater attention in the pediatric psycho-oncology literature. Understanding children’s social relationships in the context of cancer is important for four primary reasons. First, many aspects related to having cancer and undergoing treatment for cancer, such as school absence, fatigue, interruptions in play and daily activities, changes in physical appearance, strict medical regimens and their associated adverse side effects, and neurocognitive impairments can increase children’s risk for social adjustment problems. Second, positive peer relationships and social support may facilitate the adjustment of children to the experience of cancer. Third, although understudied in the pediatric literature, having positive social support from peers and friends could potentially influence the course of cancer by enhancing the functioning of the neuroendocrine and immune systems. Finally, with a broader understanding of the relevance of social relationships among children with cancer, targeted interventions can be developed and evaluated for their role on outcomes related to adjustment, quality of life, and mediating mechanisms influencing mortality and morbidity. This chapter provides a general overview of the literature related to the role that peers and friendships have on adjustment and presents a review of the relationship of social support to adjustment and health outcomes. The impact of cancer on peer relationships and friendships also is discussed. The chapter concludes with a presentation of extant literature on interventions that have been developed to promote social adjustment and a discussion of future directions. To begin, a description is provided of the terminology and how social processes are often conceptualized. Such information is presented as a heuristic for future research in pediatric psycho-oncology.

Understanding the mechanisms of physiological response in plants is crucial to building sustainable agriculture, especially under the current worldwide climate and environmental crises. Thus, plants that successfully acclimate to stress can decrease growth under stressful conditions. Brachypodium, an undomesticated grass species with close evolutionary relationships to wheat and barley, is a promising model organism of crop research. It can grow under various conditions and possess specific adaptations or tolerance mechanisms. Hence, it promises to greatly accelerate the process of gene discovery in the grasses and to serve as bridges in the exploration of panicoid and pooid grasses, arguably two of the most important clades of plants from a food security perspective. Brachypodium could hence efficaciously acclimate to the drought, salinity, cold, heat, and nutrient stress variations by reversible hypo (hyper)-activation of specific genes or sustaining transcription states as well as by reducing growth and osmotic adjustment. Nonetheless, B. stacei and B. hybridum have more plasticity and more adaptiveness than B. distachyon to abiotic stress. This review will describe advancements in knowledge of the physiological and metabolic adjustments that are needed for abiotic stress tolerance.

Streszczenie:
Past research has mainly applied linear cointegration analysis to study the relationship of crude oil prices with the prices of other commodities. However, recent methodological innovations in cointegration analysis allow for a more thorough analysis of the co-movement of commodity prices and detect asymmetric and thresholds co-movements. Following Enders and Siklos [1] and Hansen and Seo [2], we apply threshold cointegration analysis, detecting co-movements that earlier studies based on linear cointegration analysis could not detect. We find that adjustments to positive and negative deviations from the long-run equilibrium are asymmetric for copper, food and agricultural raw materials in the short-run. Moreover, the adjustments for aluminum and nickel are symmetric. The price Granger causalities behave as expected for metals and agricultural raw material prices. Food prices, however, behave differently. In sum, the results of this paper underscore the importance of consistently testing nonlinear cointegration and point out the complex interactions that take place between the markets of oil and other commodities.

This chapter explores the important issue of confounding in observational studies. The potential imbalances that result for not controlling assignment of treatment or exposure may lead to imbalance of variables that are associated with both treatment and intervention (or exposure) thus confounding results. Therefore, in this context, a potential relationship between an intervention and an outcome could be invalid. This chapter therefore explains basic definitions of confounding and presents some methods to control for confounders, highlighting the use of the propensity score, which is considered a robust method for this purpose. Different techniques of adjustment using propensity score (matching, stratification, regression, and weighting) are also discussed. This chapter concludes with a case discussion about confounding and how to address it.

Children with a developmental disability are at a substantially greater risk, when compared to their typically developing peers, of showing a variety of emotional and behavioral problems. These problems can have a profound impact on the child’s and family’s life course. Child, parenting, and family factors have all been implicated in the development and maintenance of these problems, but there is evidence that improving parenting practices can lead to a reduction in child problem behaviors, improvements in child adaptive skills, and enhanced parental adjustment and relationship quality. This chapter describes a system of parenting support, known as Stepping Stones Triple P (SSTP), for families of children with a disability. Since evidence has accumulated for the efficacy of the interventions that comprise the SSTP system, recommendations for integrating SSTP into existing services are provided. Current and future research directions are also briefly outlined.

Our findings suggest that there is existing a long-term reverse relationship between interest rate adjustment and stock index. The impact of interest rate adjustment on stock index returns could not be long-term disequilibria, which will be corrected in short-time. Also, the interest rate is the granger cause of the stock price index, while the stock price index is not the granger cause of interest rate.

Streszczenie:
Abstract In recent years, China ramped up imports of natural gas to satisfy the growing demand, which has increased the number of trade meters. Natural gas flowmeters need to be calibrated regularly at calibration stations to ensure their accuracy. Nowadays, the flow metrological calibration process is done by the operator manually in China, which is easy to be affected by personnel experience and proficiency. China is vigorously developing industry 4.0 and AI(artificial intelligence) technologies. In order to improve the calibration efficiency, a design scheme of intelligent controller for flow metrological calibration system is first proposed in this paper. The intelligent controller can replace the operator for process switching and flow adjustment. First, the controller selects the standard flowmeter according to the type of the calibrated flowmeter, and switches the calibration process. To accurately control the calibration flow for 180 seconds, the controller continuously adjusts the regulating valve with a sequence of commands to the actuator. These commands are generated by intelligent algorithm which is predefined in the controller. Process switching is operated automatically according to flowmeter calibration specifications. In order to reach the required flow point quickly, the flow adjustment is divided into two steps: preliminary adjustment and precise adjustment. For preliminary adjustment, a BP neural network will be built first using the field historical data and simulation results. This neural network describes the relationship between the valve-opening scheme and the calibration flow. Therefore, it could give a calibration flow as close as possible to the expected value during calibration. For precise adjustment, an adaptive PID controller is used. It could adjust the valve opening degree automatically to make sure the flow deviation meet the calibration requirements. Since the PID controller is a self-adaptive PID controller, the process of adjustment is very quick, which can reduce the calibration time largely. After each calibration, both the original neural network and the adaptive function of the controller will be updated to achieve the self-growth. With the information of the calibrated flowmeter, the entire calibration system can run automatically. The experiment in a calibration station shows that the intelligent controller can control the deviation of the flow value within 5% during 4∼5 minutes.

We discuss the dynamics of nonlinearly coupled arrays of mode-locked ultrashort pulse lasers as influenced by small perturbations of the nonlinear coupling parameters. We examine the experimentally observed case, where soliton-like pulse shaping is important and one nonlinear coupling mechanism is attractive and a second nonlinear coupling mechanism is repulsive, as regards the temporal relationship of the pulses in neighboring laser oscillators.1 Small adjustments of the coupling parameters can be used to produce a rich variety of complex dynamical behavior of the coupled system. Of particular interest is the possibility of highly agile beam steering of the coherent optical emission from a two dimensional array of such nonlinearly coupled mode-locked laser oscillators. Large angular range, well defined emission patterns, rapid motion of the beam, and hardware based on compact semiconductor laser components appear accessible by using currently evolving technology. We describe recent experimental results relevant to two such nonlinearly coupled lasers and calculate the properties of larger arrays.

AbstractMany shale/tight gas reservoirs can have pore scale values in the range from one to hundreds of nanometer. And the flow in nano-scale deviate the Darcy's law. Knudsen diffusion and/or gas slippage effects usually have modeled to character the non-Darcy flow mechanisms by many authors. In this paper, we investigate the non-Darcy flow mechanisms in unconventional gas reservoirs, and classify these various mechanisms based on different pore scale and pressure. Then, based on the change of pore scale and pressure, the models of gas flow that consider the absorption, desorption, slip flow, transition flow, Knudsen diffusion and continuous flow in nano-pore have been proposed to evaluate the flow character. Then, the relationship between the absorbed layers and pressure or Langmuir coefficient has been built and the influences of absorption of gas molecule have been studied on the permeability change. Compared with experimental value, the model could agree with the experimental value very well. And, desorption of the absorbed layers make the pore diameter become larger. When the thickness of the absorbed layers and the pore diameter ratio is larger than 0.1, the effect of adsorbed layer becomes very significant. With this study, the change of permeability and the gas rate on entire long term production performance could be understood better and predicted, and it is very important for the optimization of production performance and adjustment.

Abstract Thermo-acoustic refrigeration could potentially become an alternative option to current traditional refrigeration systems provided that the issue related to its efficiency is addressed. One of the incentives for developing this technology is the opportunity it establishes with respect to the use of a sustainable heat source to induce cooling. Many existing works have pointed out the relationship between the geometrical configuration of the device and its performance. Mainly, the stack geometry and position have been the focus of these previous works. In this work, a standing-wave ThermoAcoustically-Driven Thermo-Acoustic Refrigerator with an adjustable resonator has been developed. Hence the device is made of two portions, joined with an adjustable duct, namely a simple standing-wave thermo-acoustic engine that converts heat into a sound wave and a simple thermo-acoustic refrigerator where heat pumping takes place. The Design Environment for Low-amplitude ThermoAcoustic Energy Conversion (DELTAEC) was used to model and analyze the influence of the adjustment of the resonator on the cooling performance. Parameters like the temperature difference across the stack, the frequency of the acoustic sound wave generated, the cooling power and the coefficient of performance have been studied. The initial results reported in this study show the possibility to change the performance of practical TADTAR by adjusting the resonator length.

All components of the turbine system must be extremely robust and able to withstand large and constantly varying loads; the long and relatively slender blades of marine turbines are especially vulnerable. Because of this, modern marine turbine blades are increasingly constructed from fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Composite materials provide superior strength- and stiffness-to-weight ratios and improved fatigue and corrosion resistance compared to traditional metallic alloys. Additionally, it is possible to tailor the anisotropic properties of FRP composites to create an adaptive pitch mechanism that will adjust the load on the turbine in order to improve system performance, especially in off-design or varying flow conditions. In this work, qualitative fundamentals of composite structures are discussed with regards to the design of experimental scale adaptive pitch blades. The load-deformation relationship of flume-scale adaptive composite blades are characterized experimentally under static loading conditions, and dynamic loading profiles during flume testing are reported. Two sets of adaptive composite blades are compared to neutral pitch composite and rigid aluminum designs. Experimental results show significant load adjustments induced through passive pitch adaptation, suggesting that adaptive pitch composite blades could be a valuable addition to marine hydrokinetic turbine technology.

This paper aims to analyse financial integration in the markets of Brazil, China, India and Russia (BRIC’s), from July 2015 to June 2020, being the sample split in pre and during the global pandemic (Covid-19). In order to carry out this analysis, different approaches were undertaken to analyse two issues, namely, whether: (i) the global pandemic has accentuated the interdependencies in the BRIC financial markets? If so, how it has influenced the efficiency of portfolio diversification. The results suggest very significant levels of integration, in the Covid period these evidences diminish the chances of portfolio diversification in the long term. In turn, the analysis of the relationship between markets, in the short term, through the impulse response functions, in a period of global pandemic, shows positive/negative movements, with statistical significance, with persistence exceeding one week. In addition, there was no immediate adjustment in prices between markets, due to the high levels of shocks identified. Regarding the implementation of efficient portfolio diversification strategies, we consider that a good option for investors would be to avoid investments in stock markets. In this sense, one suggestion could be to invest in derivatives, gold and sovereign debt markets, with the purpose of diversifying portfolios and mitigating the risk arising from the global pandemic. The authors consider that the results achieved are of interest to investors seeking opportunities in these exchanges, as well as to policy makers to undertake institutional reforms in order to increase the efficiency of stock markets and promote the sustainable growth of financial markets.

This paper applies probit regression models to a nationally representative household survey dataset collected in 2016-2017 to analyze the relationships between various socio-demographic variables and adult Body Mass Index (BMI) in Suriname. Our results indicate that women, the elderly, and couples either married and/or living together are more likely to be obese or overweight. As expected, this is also true for individuals who have chronic illnesses. The analysis also finds that individuals who engage in a sport or in other forms of exercise, even if modest, have lower odds of being overweight or obese. Interestingly, the findings indicate that individuals who benefit from government social safety net programs are less likely to be associated with being overweight or obese. The results of this study have implications for the adjustment of current Surinamese nutritional guidelines as well as the design and implementation of targeted obesity-reduction policies that recognize that being overweight is influenced by various characteristics. Although the results are country-specific, they have the potential to influence action in all countries in the Caribbean that lack policies to address obesity.

Streszczenie:
Monoecious species such as melon and cucumber develop separate male and female (or bisexual) flowers on the same plant individual. They display complex genetic and hormonal regulation of sex patterns along the plant. Ethylene is known to play an important role in promoting femaleness and inhibiting male development, but many questions regarding critical sites of ethylene production versus perception, the relationship between ethylene and the sex determining loci, and the possible differences between melon and cucumber in this respect are still open. The general goal of the project was to elucidate the role of ethylene in determining flower sex in Cucumis species, melon and cucumber. The specific Objectives were: 1. Clone and characterize expression patterns of cucumber genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis and perception. 2. Genetic mapping of cloned genes and markers with respect to sex loci in melon and cucumber. 3. Produce and analyze transgenic melons altered in ethylene production or perception. In the course of the project, some modifications/adjustments were made: under Objective 2 (genetic mapping) a set of new mapping populations had to be developed, to allow better detection of polymorphism. Under Objective 3, cucumber transformation systems became available to us and we included this second model species in our plan. The main findings of our study support the pivotal role of ethylene in cucumber and melon sex determination and later stages of reproductive development. Modifying ethylene production resulted in profound alteration of sex patterns in melon: femaleness increased, and also flower maturation and fruit set were enhanced, resulting in earlier, more concentrated fruit yield in the field. Such effect was previously unknown and could have agronomic value. Our results also demonstrate the great importance of ethylene sensitivity in sex expression. Ethylene perception genes are expressed in sex-related patterns, e.g., gynoecious lines express higher levels of receptor-transcripts, and copper treatments that activate the receptor can increase femaleness. Transgenic cucumbers with increased expression of an ethylene receptor showed enhanced femaleness. Melons that expressed a defective receptor produced fewer hermaphrodite flowers and were insensitive to exogenous ethylene. When the expression of defective receptor was restricted to specific floral whorls, we saw that pistils were not inhibited by the blocked perception at the fourth whorl. Such unexpected findings suggest an indirect effect of ethylene on the affected whorl; it also points at interesting differences between melon and cucumber regarding the mode of action of ethylene. Such effects will require further study. Finally, our project also generated and tested a set of novel genetic tools for finer identification of sex determining genes in the two species and for efficient breeding for these characters. Populations that will allow easier linkage analysis of candidate genes with each sex locus were developed. Moreover, effects of modifier genes on the major femaleness trait were resolved. QTL analysis of femaleness and related developmental traits was conducted, and a comprehensive set of Near Isogenic Lines that differ in specific QTLs were prepared and made available for the private and public research. Marker assisted selection (MAS) of femaleness and fruit yield components was directly compared with phenotypic selection in field trials, and the relative efficiency of MAS was demonstrated. Such level of genetic resolution and such advanced tools were not used before to study these traits, that act as primary yield components to determine economic yields of cucurbits. In addition, this project resulted in the establishment of workable transformation procedures in our laboratories and these can be further utilized to study the function of sex-related genes in detail.
