Streszczenie:
Heat transfer performance of horizontal roped tubes was studied using an evaporator/condenser test rig. The condenser section contained a single horizontal tube and was operated at both vacuum and atmospheric conditions. A vacuum pump was integral to the system to ensure the presence of noncondensible gases did not affect the results. The test tubes were Wolverine MHT Korodense titanium tubes with an outside diameter of 16.07 mm and a corrugation pitch of 8 mm. The effect of wire-wrapping was studied using titanium wires ranging from 0. 1 to 1.6 mm in diameter corresponding to a range of pitch to diameter ratio from 80 to 5. The outside heat transfer coefficient, h(sub O)o, was determined by first experimentally obtaining the overall heat transfer coefficient, U(sub O)o, and then utilizing a modified Wilson Plot procedure. Results obtained for steam condensation indicate that the MHT Korodense titanium tube provides negligible enhancement compared to the a titanium tube. The addition of wire-wrapping provided minimal increase in the outside heat transfer coefficient, about 8% at a fractional coverage of approximately 5% corresponding to a pitch to wire diameter ratio near 20

The aims of the thesis were to study how washboarding (the undulations present on the surface of corrugated cardboard used to manufacture boxes) relates to the mechanical properties of paper and the board manufacturing conditions and to examine the impact of washboarding upon the structural integrity and printability of corrugated cardboard packaging. A digital image profilometry technique was developed to measure the washboarding profiles of corrugated board. This technique was used to measure the washboarding depth and profiles for a range of corrugated boards, some constructed manually and some machine manufactured. This enabled a study into how a change in the mechanical properties of paper and glue affect washboarding depth. The effect that the speed of machine manufacturing had upon the degree of washboarding was also determined. A study of how environmental conditions affect washboarding geometry was undertaken. The effects of the extent of washboarding upon a range of board performance measures were tested empirically and modelled using Finite Element Analysis. These were edgewise compression testing (ECT), three-point bend, and MD-Shear (an Amcor Ltd. proprietary test). A method was developed to measure full-tone print coverage of corrugated board and was used to study how washboarding affects the printing quality of corrugated board.

This thesis presents an analysis of a corrugated conic horn structure with anisotropic dielectric. This dielectric cone is positioned inside the horn and has an optical axis in its longitudinal direction. This horn configuration can be obtained using the structure of corrugated horn and adding an anisotropic dielectric cone. The anisotropy can artificially be obtained by doping the isotropic dielectric or using a perforation technique. This perforation technique is suggested and presented in this Thesis. Expressions for the transverse fields and the propagation constant curves were developed considering this new geometry. It is also presented a comparative study of the degenerated transversal fields with well-known structures. These structures are: hollow cylindrical guide, corrugated cylindrical guide, cylindrical metallic guide with dielectric and corrugated cylindrical guide with dielectric. The expressions to calculate the radiated far fields were obtained for the corrugated cylindrical guide with anisotropic dielectric. In addition, expressions to calculate the radiated far fields for the corrugated cylindrical horn with anisotropic dielectric were developed and presented. These expressions considered horns with small flare angle and used the spherical cap approximation theory. All expressions considered the 3th Ludwig definition for the radiated far field. Far field analyses were conducted for well-known structures. These structures were obtained by degenerating the new configuration presented in this thesis and aimed to validate the theoretical developed theory. The results proved its validity. Finally, a parametric analysis was performed. This analysis considered, for a given structure configuration, the behavior of the radiated far fields and its maximum cross polar levels as a function of the anisotropy and frequency. It was verified that the dielectric anisotropy had very little effect on the half power beam width characteristic. The maximum cross polar level as a function of the frequency was analyzed. For some specific values of permittivity and anisotropy, for the considered configuration, the balanced hybrid condition was reached. In this condition the structure presented very low cross polar values in a large frequency band. This behavior is much more superior to the corrugated horn, dielectric horn and the isotropic dielectric corrugated horn.

Streszczenie:
'Compliant' structures, i. e., structures that undergo large deformations as part of their normal behaviour, can perform the function of a complex mechanism with just a single, or very few, components. When multistability is introduced into compliant structures, an even greater simplification can be made, with actuators and/ or locking mechanisms becoming redundant. Corrugated shells are commonly encountered at all scales of engineering, providing shell structures of a dramatically increased stiffness at little extra cost or weight. What is historically less understood is the compliant behaviour of corrugated shells. The topic of this thesis, therefore,' is the development and analysis of new categories of structure incorporating corrugations, utilising their compliancy to achieve morphing behaviours that are not otherwise possible. Three distinct categories of shell are studied: (i) 'flat' corrugated sheets, which are multistable under the action of internal stresses, 'snapping' between their flat state and a cylindrically coiled state: these shells are also capable of developing 'twisted' stable states. An algebraic model based on internal strain energy determines the conditions for the various modes of multistability for uniform changes in curvature throughout the shell, and a plastic flow model describes the formation of the internal stresses; (ii) 'curved' corrugated sheets, 'which can morph between shapes of differing Gaussian curvature without plastic deformation. Again, a simplified algebraic model describes their behaviour, as does a numerical model. These models consider the strong coupling that occurs between bending and stretching in corrugated shells; and (iii) 'doubly-corrugated ' sheets, similar to an eggbox in concept, which , again, can morph between shapes of different Gaussian curvature, and also exhibit synclastic bending behaviour. Some of the analyses performed on the curved corrugated sheets are also applied to these shells. The qualitative behaviour of the analytical models matches, in every detail considered, the behaviour observed in prototypes. Natural-mode analyses on the category (ii) and (iii) shells demonstrate that the interesting behaviour occurs at relatively low stiffnesses, implying that t his behaviour is potentially useful. Quantitatively, however, the analyses for categories (i) and (iii) above do not prove simple to verify. Physical tests compare the internal stresses of the category (i) shells to those predicted by the plastic flow analysis: the predicted stresses exceed those measured by, typically, 50 %, but it is not established whether the discrepancy is due to the simplifications in the model, inaccuracies in the crude test method or a flmv in om understanding. On its prediction of the curvatures created, the model is more successful. A test is more easily devised for the category (ii) shells, and measurements of the shape change are within 4 % of both the finite-element simulations and the simplified algebraic models over 90 % of the test range. In measuring forces, to test the constitutive relations produced; the accuracy is lower, largely due to the difference between our material model and the real properties of the polymer used: there is strong agreement between the finite element model and the algebraic model. In conclusion, this thesis is successful in generating new varieties of structure, which have a a wide potential for application. A broad range of designs and analyses are presented, describing the behaviour of these structures well enough that our understanding of them seems justified. Nonetheless, this work merely scratches the surface of what may be achieved in this field, demonstrating some of the potential of such shells and leaving much to be done in their further evaluation and development.

Streszczenie:
The work presented in this thesis examines mode conversion characteristics of corrugated horns. The outcome of this investigation is the ability to produce optimum designs for corrugated horns. Analysis of propagation characteristics of corrugated conical horns is extended to the throat region where the complex representation of eigenvalues must be used to obtain an accurate field representation. A modal matching technique to the several is described using spherical modes and applied investigation of the scattering properties of types of discontinuities which may occur in corrugated horns. Computer modelling of a corrugated horn is described using the modal matching technique. The corrugated horn is divided up into a number of conical horn sections, each section propagating spherical modes. The propagating characteristics of each section are computed and modal matching is used to predict the scattering matrix for each junction between sections. The scattering matrices are then cascaded so that the complete horn can be modelled on the computer and an optimised design performed. Radiation properties of corrugated horns are studied by taking the influence of mode conversion in the horn into account. Comprehensive theoretical investigation into return loss performance, mode conversion characteristics and radiation properties of corrugated horns are described and substantiated by the experimental results . A phase cancellation method is presented, which can be used to design a profiled corrugated horn with low return loss and low higher order modes presented at the aperture.

Streszczenie:
The present work describes the construction of a semi-analytical model for prediction of buckling loads in simply supported corrugated paperboard panels. The model accounts for transverse shear, due to the weakness of the core in such plates compared to the facings. This was done utilizing energy relations and rst order transverse shear. The panel was homogenised using laminate theory. A detailed model using FEM was derived in order to validate the predictive capabilities of the analytical model. Experimental testing was performed to estimate the accuracy of both theoretical models, and assess the limitation of the analytical model. All modes of analysis showed good agreement for cubic boxes. Further investigation into expanding the scope of the analytical model was carried out and commented on.

Streszczenie:
The morphing wing can be considered as a wing with seamless control surfaces and high-lift devices, which is capable of changing its shape during flight. As a result, an aircraft with the morphing wing can fly multi-mission tasks effectively and efficiently. The morphing wing should be stiff in spanwise direction to withstand aerodynamic and actuation loads while, in chordwise direction, the wing should be compliant in order to allow shape change. In this thesis, corrugated carbon fibre reinforced polyurethane composite is introduced as a candidate for the skin of morphing wing applications as the corrugated composite is considered highly anisotropic. A parametric study of three corrugated profiles (sinusoidal, trapezoidal and U-shape) with differnet amplitudes and unit cell lengths was performed numerically using finite element analysis and compared with analytical model in order to investigate the effects of the corrugation geometry on the mechanical response under tensile load. The results indicate that the trapezoidal profile offers the lowest extensional stiffness followed by U-shape and sinusoidal, respectively. In terms of corrugation geometry, the extensional stiffness of the corrugation is inversely proportional to both unit cell length and amplitude. An aerodynamic analysis of an aerofoil with corrugated lower skin was performed experimentally at four different Reynolds numbers and compared with an aerofoil with smooth skin. The conclusion drawn from the wind tunnel testing is that the aerofoil with corrugated skin on the pressure side is feasible to be used for a morphing wing of a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that operates at Reynolds number of approximately 10[superscript 5]. A bench-top demonstrator was constructed as a proof of concept and experimentally tested for repeatability and structural integrity. Moreover, the mechanical advantage was evaluated through a simple experiment.

Streszczenie:
Photocatalysis is a green technology that has been widely used in wastewater treatment. In this work, mass transfer processes in corrugated photocatalytic reactors were characterized both experimentally and through computer simulations. For the experimental work, various drum rotational speeds, reactor liquid volumes and number of corrugations were studied to elucidate their effects on mass transfer phenomena. The mass transfer rate was found to increase with increasing rotational speed. Liquid volumes in the reactor significantly affect the mass transfer rate when 20% of the surface area of the drum was immersed. A higher mass transfer rate was found using the drum with 28 corrugations, which had the lowest mass transfer coefficient when compared to the drums with 13 and 16 corrugations. In the computer simulations, velocity and concentration fields within the corrugated reactors were modelled to explore the characteristics of mass transfer processes. The mass transfer coefficients predicted by the simulations were lower than those measured experimentally due to mass transfer limitations occurring between the corrugation volume and bulk solution in the simulations. Based on mass transfer characteristics, it was determined that the drum with 28 corrugations was the most efficient photocatalytic reactor, and had the lowest mass transfer coefficient among those studied.

Streszczenie:
This PhD study developed a composite structure with extreme orthotropic stiffness properties that offers the possibility for use as a skin panel in a morphing trailing edge control surface. The work has shown through an extensive literature review a lack of maturity in existing morphing skin concepts and thus the need for further research and development in this field. The focus of this investigation was on arranging conventional composite materials in a hierarchical structure that allows the combination of inherently different properties such as compliance and stiffness. This resulted in a fibre reinforced composite corrugated sandwich structure that is stiff parallel to the corrugation direction and relatively compliant, in tension and flexure, transverse to the corrugation direction. Experimental, analytical and numerical structural analysis was carried out to define the envelope within which corrugated structures can be designed to meet the requirements of a morphing skin. Further experimental and numerical aerodynamic investigations showed how to best implement these corrugated morphing skins in order to minimise the aerodynamic penalties. The combination of these results led to the design, manufacturing and testing of an aerofoil section with a morphing trailing edge control surface that incorporates a corrugated morphing skin. Low speed wind tunnel tests proved the concept but also highlighted limitations and raised suggestions for future work

Streszczenie:
Creasing is often performed on paperboard to lower the bending stiffness in a region, making the paperboard easier to fold. Packsize AB uses rolls to crease corrugated paperboard. When using rolls for creasing double-walled corrugated paperboard in the machine direction, fracture occasionally occur on the top liner. This master thesis investigates the initiation of these surface cracks for a BC type corrugated paperboard. Experiments and FE-analysis are performed to study the magnitude of influence for various creasing roll geometries, under various hydraulic base pressures and changes in the material properties. The report includes a discussion of which material parameters that are the most sensitive with respect to surface crack initi-ation. Comparisons between FE-analysis and experiments are made to validate the FE-modeling. The experimental results show that the creasing roll geometries signif-icantly affects the percentage of failure. The best geometry lowered the percentage of failure from 36 % to 0 %. Furthermore, the most sensitive material parameters con-cerning the Tsai-Wu failure criterion used in the numerical simulations are Young’s modulus of the liners and the ultimate strength in the cross direction of the top liner. A variation of 5 % of these material properties yields a change of the maximum Tsai-Wu strength index with 1.5 % and 5 %, respectively. However, further investigations with focus on validation and comparison of FE-analysis and experiments are needed to ensure a reliable model where various types and sizes of corrugated paperboard can be analyzed. This would need measured material properties as a part of the experimental study. Also, the performance of the yielded creasing lines from the experiments are not included in this thesis as well as the criticality of the top surface cracks.

Streszczenie:

In this dissertation, a novel approach to modeling the scattered field of a periodic corrugated cylinder, from an oblique incident planewave, is presented. The approach utilizes radial waveguide approximations for fields within the corrugations, which are point matched to approximated scattered fields outside of the corrugation to solve for the expansion coefficients. The point matching is done with TMz and TEz modes simultaneously, allowing for hybrid modes to exist.

The derivation of the fields and boundary conditions used are discussed in detail. Axial and radial propagating modes for the scattered fields are derived and discussed. Close treatment is given to field equations summation truncation and conversion to matrix form, for numerical computing. A detailed account of the modeling approach using Mathematica® and NCAlgebra for the noncommutative algebra, involved in solving for the expansion coefficients, are also given.

The modeling techniques offered provide a full description and prediction of the scattered field of a periodic corrugated cylinder. The model is configured to approximate a smooth cylinder, which is then compared against that of a textbook standard smooth cylinder. The methodology and analysis applied in this research provide a solution for computational electromagnetics, RF communications, Radar systems and the like, for the design, development, and analysis of such systems. Through the rapid modeling techniques developed in this research, early knowledge discovery can be made allowing for better more effective decision making to be made early in the design and investigation process of an RF project.

Uni-directional fishtailing results have been attributed to the existing method of folding. To this end, the folding mechanism has been studied and two innovations, generic to any continuous folding operations, have been suggested: the coil cam and the twin cam.

The project aimed at conceptually develop a solution that is able to automatically transfer an already stacked and measured heap of goods from an order tote into an erected corrugated cardboard box, whereas the dimensions of the corrugated cardboard box and the stack are allowed to vary within a specified interval. The method for this project consisted of five main parts: feasibility study; concept generation; concept choice; design; and evaluation. The project was initiated by a feasibility study where the problem was clarified and knowledge regarding the problem was gathered. The feasibility study resulted in an user requirement specification and a product requirement specification. The product requirement specification was utilized in the evaluation processof the final developed concept. The concept generation was conducted according to structured methods prescribed by Ulrich and Eppinger. The concept choice was done by the use of Pughs concept choice matrix. The result of this project consists of a conceptual proposal of how the previously described problem may be solved. The final developed concept resulted in a cad model. The evaluation showed that the concept did not fulfill the product requirement specification, despite this it is assessed that the concept in its working principle has good merits that are worth further investigation. Further development of the concept remain and validation of the working principle is needed. Further choices concerning form, material, and components remain. The report contributes to a foundation for further development of an automated filling mechanism for erected corrugated cardboard boxes.

Abstract Beneficial Reuse of Corrugated Paperboard in Civil Engineering Applications Gregory Michael Stone An investigation was conducted to explore the potential for reuse of corrugated paperboard. Corrugated paperboard represents a large fraction of the municipal solid waste generated and discarded in the United States. Alternative applications for reuse can provide a significant benefit by reducing the volume of waste being disposed and by reducing the use of raw materials. Four civil engineering applications were examined for potential beneficial reuse of corrugated paperboard: slurry trench construction, vertical drilling, directional drilling, and controlled low strength materials (CLSM). For the purpose of this project, corrugated paperboard was pulped and added to bentonite slurry or CLSM mixtures. Bentonite slurry mixtures were tested for viscosity, density, filtrate loss, and permeability. The behavior of the bentonite slurries was greatly influenced by interaction and interlocking of corrugate fibers; in general resulting in increased viscosity, filtrate loss, and permeability and decreased density. CLSM mixtures were tested for flow consistency, unit weight, air content, and compressive strength. CLSM mixtures prepared with corrugated paperboard showed an increased water demand due to high absorption of the corrugate. The higher water content was a significant factor contributing to decreased unit weight and compressive strength. CLSM mixtures containing corrugated paperboard also exhibited increased air contents, possibly due to entrapment of air within the corrugate pulp. Corrugated paperboard was used to successfully replace up to 27% of bentonite for slurry trench applications, 60% of bentonite for vertical drilling applications, and 59% of bentonite for directional drilling applications while maintaining acceptable engineering properties. For CLSM mixtures up to 1% of fine aggregate was replaced with corrugated paperboard while maintaining satisfactory engineering properties. Incorporation of corrugated paper board into bentonite slurry, CLSM, and drilling fluid applications provides a viable option for beneficial reuse.

This work presents the design realization and performance of a 7-element prototype array of corrugated feedhorns in W-band. The module is fabricated using a so-called “platelet” technique by milling Aluminum plates. This technique is suitable for low-cost and scalable high performance applications. Room temperature Return Loss measurements show a low (<-30 dB) reflection over a 20% bandwidth with a maximum matching of -40 dB at 105 GHz for all seven antennas. Beam pattern measurements indicate good repeatability and a low (-30 dB) sidelobe levels. This work is particularly relevant for future Cosmic Microwave Background polarisation measurements, which require large microwave cryogenic detector arrays coupled to high performance corrugated feed horns.

Streszczenie:
A new type of pulse compressor based on sweep frequency pulse compression has been developed using a helically corrugated waveguide as a dispersive medium. This structure provides selective coupling between a TE₁₁ travelling wave and a near cut-off TE₂₁ wave, creating an eigenwave where the dispersion characteristics of one mode gradually converts into that of other. As the compressor works far from cut-off the reflections associated with operation close to cut-off are reduced and allows the compressor to be used at the output of a powerful amplifier. An experimental and theoretical study of swept-frequency based pulse compression as well as a theoretical and experimental investigation of the dispersive properties of a circular waveguide with a helical corrugation on its inner surface was carried out. Measurements of the helically corrugated compressor obtained a maximum optimum power compression ratio of 10.9 for a helically corrugated waveguide of length 208.08cm. A 1 kilowatt input pulse with a frequency sweep from 9.60GHz to 9.35GHz over 70ns was compressed by the helically corrugated waveguide. The compressed pulse had a duration of 3ns and gave a compression efficiency of 44%. The helical compressor experiments conducted were the first of their kind to be carried out and were found to be in good agreement with theory. A numerical study of the potential of the helically corrugated waveguide to produce multi-GW output pulses using frequency modulation at the falling edge of a microwave pulse produced from a high-power BWO was investigated.

Streszczenie:
Crashworthiness has become an important aspect in vehicle design due to the stringent requirements on occupant safety under survivable accident scenarios. The uses of composite materials have increased due to their tailorability and high specific strength and stiffness. Variety of energy absorption devices have been investigated for their energy absorption characteristics. Literature suggests that corrugated beam geometry promotes stable crushing behavior and has the highest energy absorption capability. But a lack of consensus on the rate sensitivity of these devices exists and is mainly attributed to different material systems, specimen geometries, test apparatus used, etc. This experimental study addresses the progressive crushing of Newport NB321/7781 E-glass and Toray T700G/3900 plain weave fabric prepreg fiber-reinforced corrugated panel. The progressive crushing behavior is studied at quasi-static rates as well as dynamic loading rates up to 100in/s. Load rate effects, stacking sequence effects and laminate gross thickness effects on energy absorption of corrugated beams were investigated. The test data indicates that the specific energy absorption of corrugated beams is rate sensitive. Besides, modes of failure of corrugated beams were observed to be sensitive to test speed. Furthermore, stacking sequences of [0]n are superior in energy absorption compared to [45]n and thickness of the laminates were observed to affect the specific energy absorption.

Streszczenie:
Until recently, work on compact metallic heat exchangers has sparked interest amongst heat exchanger manufacturers due to its enhanced thermal performance and energy saving benefits in comparison to conventional heat exchangers. Nevertheless, the limitations of these metallic heat exchangers which involve corrosion, weight and cost issues have created the need to develop alternative units. Much of the initial interest in the development of polymer compact heat exchangers was stimulated by their ability to handle both liquids and gases (single and two phase duties); their resistance to fouling and corrosion and their possible use in humidification and dehumidification duties. But, most importantly, the use of polymers offers substantial weight, volume, space and cost savings which give them a competitive edge over exchangers manufactured from more exotic alloys. This research focuses on the development and performance investigation of a polymer heat exchanger using thin films (PFCHE). The design incorporates the use of thin 100/-lm PEEK films, to combat the low thermal conductivity of the polymer and adopts laminar flows to avoid high pressure drops. Performance testing using industrial conditions was carried out for square and spiral PFCHE configurations, leading to the development of design correlations for various fluid systems (0.7

Streszczenie:
In the thesis two problems have been studied: the first one is the use of corrugated webs in plate girders for composite bridges; the second one is the study of lateral restraints in composite bridges. In structural design corrugated webs are frequently used in beams for buildings in Sweden. They have also been used in four bridges in France and two in Japan. The shear stresses of corrugated panels were the main subject of previous studies. This thesis deals with local flange buckling of beams with corrugated webs. Computer analyses give a ratio of areas for use in design of the compressed flange. The validity of this ratio is confirmed by experimental work undertaken on five specimens (two of them loaded by bending only; three loaded by a combination of bending and shear). The interaction between the local buckling of the flange and web buckling is examined. A formula for calculating the effective shear modulus is given. The possible methods of fabrication of a cambered beam with a corrugated web are shown here and the problems which could arise are discussed. There is also a comparison between the design of an existing bridge and a new design where a plane web in a plate girder is replaced by a corrugated web. The second part of the thesis contains computational investigations of the lateral restraints in composite plate girder bridges. This method of investigation is more appropriate than laboratory testing, due to the difficulty of fabricating steelwork to maximum permitted imperfections. Numerical elastic finite element analyses with geometric non—linear facilities are used on a relevant part of the structure (a compressed flange) that has the maximum allowed geometric imperfections. The F— forces in elastic lateral restraints modelled by spring elements are then determined. This study concentrates particularly on design forces for bracings at the supports of simply—supported and continuous composite UB and plate girder bridges.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this research is to evaluate the performance of new corrugated-type embossments developed by Vulcraft Research and Development for their 2VLI and 3VLI composite deck. Performance of deck with the proposed embossment types is compared with that of deck with the existing embossment type, resulting in the recommendation of which type to further investigate for production. The evaluation consists of uniformly loaded full-scale slab tests whose flexural strengths are compared with those given by different strength prediction methods that are alternatives to full-scale testing. The methods used in this study are the First Yield Method (Heagler 1992), the ASCE Appendix D Alternate Method (Standard 1992), and Widjaja's (1997) Iterative Method. Shear bond tests are also performed for deck with each embossment type to evaluate shear resistance specifically, and to provide shear bond data needed to perform the Iterative Method.

Streszczenie:
This thesis presents two major sections with the objective of introducing a new cold-formed steel (CFS) shear wall system with corrugated steel sheathings. The work shown herein includes the development of an optimal shear wall system as well as an optimal slit configuration for the CFS corrugated sheathings which result in a CFS shear wall with high ductility, high strength, high stiffness and overall high performance. The conclusion is based on the results of 36 full-scale shear wall tests performed in the structural laboratory of the University of North Texas. A variety of shear walls were the subject of this research to make further discussions and conclusions based on different sheathing materials, slit configurations, wall configurations, sheathing connection methods, wall dimensions, shear wall member thicknesses, and etc. The walls were subject to cyclic (CUREE protocol) lateral loading to study their deformations and structural performances. The optimal sit configuration for CFS shear walls with corrugated steel sheathings was found to be 12×2 in. vertical slits in 6 rows. The failure mode observed in this shear wall system was the connection failure between the sheathing and the framing members. Also, most of the shear walls tested displayed local buckling of the chord framing members located above the hold-down locations. The second section includes details of developing a Finite Element Model (FEM) in ABAQUS software to analyze the lateral response of the new shear wall systems. Different modeling techniques were used to define each element of the CFS shear wall and are reported herein. Material properties from coupon test results are applied. Connection tests are performed to define pinching paths to model fasteners with hysteretic user-defined elements. Element interactions, boundary conditions and loading applications are consistent with full scale tests. CFS members and corrugated sheathings are modeled with shell elements, sheathing-to-frame fasteners are modeled using nonlinear springs (SPRING2 elements) for monotonic models and a general user defined element (user subroutine UEL) for cyclic models. Hold-downs are defined by boundary conditions. A total of three models were developed and validated by comparing ABAQUS results to full scale test results.

Streszczenie:
Corrugated board and other paper products are widely used in product packaging due to good mechanical properties, recyclability, price etc. Due to the growing e–commerce industry the dynamical behaviour of corrugated board is of particular interest. Paper exhibits an orthotropic behaviour and is a non–linear material. In this work, corrugated board is analyzed from mechanical point of view, when subjected to a short timespan impactload. Edgecrushtest (ECT),flatcrusttest(FCT),bending stiffness and static deflectiontests which are part of standards used in the industry are performed. Both experimental and numerical approaches are used in the analysis and the results are compared and discussed. The elastic part of a corrugated board material model predicts the physical behaviour well and provides reliable results. Bending stiffness model results have approximately 1% difference from physical experiments and the static deflection test together with FCT has a 6% difference. Dynamicaldroptest gives13%,11% and 27% relative error for different drop heights. Elastic–plastic behaviour requires further investigations, especially in ECT test which has around 45% discrepancy from physical experiment. The possible difference in the dynamical model might arise from the boundary conditions which were not fully controlled during the physical experiment and the difference in the ECT can be possibly explained by layer thickness approximations together with glue line width assumptions between fluting and the liners in the numerical models. Results suggest that the finite element approach is a reliable way to model corrugated board but it poses challenges especially in complex loading conditions. The elastic behaviour of the corrugated board is well predicted by assuming an orthotropical material model. The dynamic behaviour when subjected to an impulse force was well predicted for low drop heights. but requires more investigation for high impulse impacts.

The wooden Pallets have caused global pest control problem since they carry bio-insects to any destination country, and the new bio-insects/ pests were born after a bio-insect/ pest immigrant to a new country and mates with local bio-insects/ pests. It has severely impacted on the global plant protection. Fortunately, the United Nations and more than 100 countries have signed the Plant Protection Treaty for prevention of the wooden pallets to biological pollution and regulation of using wooden pallets. Under the regulation of ISPM15, it is regulated that to prevent the harm of bio-insects/pest in wooden pallets to biology through prosperous trading over the world, many countries request the imported wooden packaging materials should be heat treated or fumigated in order to eliminate the harmful bio-insects/pest in wooden packaging materials. Worldwide countries has gradually practiced strict rule or prohibited to use wooden packaging materials. The substitutes shall be not only in accordant with regulation but also be recycled due to the environmental protection issue. Due to regulation and environmental concern, the user of wooden packaging materials must consider their future resource and packaging solution.
