The abnormal growth of stripe domains on the Z-polar surface during polarization switching in lithium niobate single crystals modified by soft proton exchange was studied for the first time.2. The dependences of abnormally low values of threshold fields of domain formation on the Z-polar surface on the duration of the proton exchange process are revealed.3. The effect of the formation of quasi-periodic domain structures with the growth of stripe domains from a planar domain wall was found.4. The observed anomalous decrease in the threshold field of stripe domain growth as a result of soft proton exchange is attributed to the formation of bound internal field caused by the presence of a composition gradient in the near-surface layer.5. It is shown that the composition gradient in the near-surface layer increases with an increase in the duration of the proton exchange process, which leads to a decrease in the threshold field.6. The possibility of creating a stable periodic domain structure with a period of 500 nm by local switching using the probe of a scanning probe microscope is demonstrated.7. For the first time, radiation with a wavelength of 374 nm was obtained by the method of the second-harmonic generation in a crystal of magnesium doped lithium niobate with a 2-µm-period domain structure created by scanning with a focused electron beam

Pełny tekst źródłaStructural and luminescence properties of rare-earth-doped (thulium, terbium and ytterbium) thin films of yttrium oxide and titanium oxide were studied as a down-converting layer from near-UV to infrared for integration in solar cells to improve their yield. These thin films were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition at atmospheric pressure with organo-metallic precursors and assisted by aerosol (aerosol assisted MOCVD). The thin films were partially crystallized as deposited (400°C in the anatase phase for TiO2 , 540°C in the cubic phase for Y2O3). After annealing the crystallization is greatly improved and the rare-earth ion luminescence is obtained in both oxide matrices. The thulium emits in a large band centered around 800 nm and the ytterbium at 980 nm. The terbium emits mainly in the visible range. Excitation spectra showed that the photon absorption occurs in the matrix. In the TiO2 matrix a transfer rate from Tm to Yb of 20 % was measured for doping of 0,8 % for both rare-earth, which corresponds to the quenching limit. The overall measured yield is low, we showed that the probable reasons were the thin films’ lack of absorption to obtain the excitation of the sensitizer ion and a low efficiency of luminescence and down-conversion processes

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis deals with thermal radiation at nanoscale in order to increase the energy conversion performances of thermophotovoltaic systems (TPV) The basics of thermal radiation and of photovoltaic energy conversion are recalled first. The flux radiated by few-layers emitters supporting interference phenomena are then calculated numerically. These phenomena allows controlling the emission spectrum, and thus the optimization of a selective emitter for TPV application. The next chapter is dedicated to near-field thermal radiation between a semi-infinite emitter and a flat film. This configuration is close to a TPV system, where the semi-infinite emitter can be related to the radiating body, and the film to the photovoltaic device. Different phenomena are analyzed: the behavior of the surface polariton resonances, the spatiale absorption of the radiative power and the interference phenomena in the near-to-far field transition regime. These phenomena can be used to design optimal spectra. In the last chapter, the performances of TPV system under near-field regime (NFR-TPV) are numerically simulated with a coupled charge transport/thermal radiation code. The models based on the low-injection approximation commonly used to simplify the charge transport problem inside the PV device are evaluated in details. Several cell architectures optimizing the performances of the system are then presented. All these results shed new light on thermal radiation of multilayers and their application to thermophotovoltaic conversion

Pełny tekst źródłaThe continuous growth of Internet traffic implies an increased power consumption due to the many optical-to-electronic (OEO) conversions required by routers and switches. Transparent networks could curb this uncontrolled growth, but keeping the data in the optical domain has two adverse consequences: physical layer impairments accumulation which strongly degrades the performance due to amplication noise and non-linearities; and the wavelength continuity constraint (WCC) to keep the opticalsignal's wavelength unchanged in wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) optical networks which degrades network blocking performance. Wavelength converters (WCs) can alleviate the WCC constraint, but the only commercially available devices are the OEO-based WCs (OEO-WCs), however, their cost increases with bit-rates. On the other hand, all-optical wavelength converters (AO-WCs) have been demonstrated in research laboratories albeit with a limited conversion range and a performance that degrades converted signal's quality. In this thesis, we design the transmission layer using two different modulation formats sets with different bit-rates ranges; and consequently different performance estimation models. At the network level, our analyses show that WCs' contribution depends on traffic demands serving ordering in the online traffic assumption; that using xed-alternate routing (FAR) or least-loaded routing (LLR) algorithms and first-fit (FF) wavelength assignment algorithm, AO-WCs give the same performance enhancement as OEO-WCs. Moreover, we identify an optimum AO-WC conversion range and cascadability which shows that LLR requires lower number of conversions per channel compared to FAR
