Streszczenie:
The seas and oceans, ships and boats, alongside other maritime activities and practices, have become a focus of work within the “new mobilities paradigm.” However, water worlds much like the space they occupy in the relation to the land remain situated in the margins of such work, despite an oceanic (re)turn in disciplines such as human geography, sociology, anthropology, and politics. Drawing from this recognition, this article seeks to make two contributions. First, following earlier, agenda-setting work, it makes a renewed call for mobilities scholarship to centralize work on oceans, ships, and other forms seagoing travel and life. Second, in doing so, it suggests such work needs to voyage more deeply and widely in the future, exploring mobilities beyond surficial connections and flows across our oceans, and making more expansive the subjects and objects and scales of investigation, under the remit of the “new mobilities paradigm.”

AbstractThis article synthesizes and links together evidence published thus far in secondary literature, in order to highlight the contribution of Nusantara to the genesis and circulation of various forms of Sanskritic Buddhism across Asia from the fifth to the fourteenth century. It places particular emphasis on its expansion via maritime routes. Archaeological vestiges and textual sources suggest that Nusantara was not a periphery, but played a constitutive, Asia-wide role as both a crossroads and terminus of Buddhist contacts since the early centuries of the Common Era. Sumatra, Java, and the Malay Peninsula hosted major centres of Buddhist worship and higher learning that were fully integrated into the trans-Asian maritime network of trade, diplomacy, and pilgrimage. Frequented by some of the most eminent Buddhist personalities of their times, who prompted doctrinal and cultic developments in South and East Asia, Nusantara may have exerted an influence on paradigms of Sanskritic Buddhism across Asia, rather than being a passive recipient of ideas and practices.

This essay argues that the primary socio-economic formations of premodern Japan were formed in the Bronze Age via processes of ancient globalisation across Eurasia. Multi-crop cereal agriculture combining rice, millet, wheat and barley with a minor contribution from domesticated animals spread from Bronze Age Korea to Japan at the beginning of the first millennium BC. This agricultural system gradually expanded through the archipelago while engendering new economic niches centred on trade, raiding and specialised fishing. From the fifth century AD the horse became widely used for warfare, transport and overseas trade. While alluvial rice farming provided staple finance for the early state, it is argued here that the concept of the ‘maritime mode of production’ better explains economic processes in the nonstate spaces of Japan until the early seventeenth century. Despite this diversity in socio-economic formations, the post-Bronze Age globalisation of food in Japan appears to have been delayed compared to many other regions of Eurasia and to have been less impacted by elite consumption. Further research is required to confirm this suggestion and the essay outlines several areas where archaeological research could contribute to debates over the ‘Great Divergence’ and the economic development of the modern world.

The paper sheds light on the active involvement of Latvian geographers and maritime geologists in exploring coastal regions and maritime geology throughout the 20th century. It highlights the establishment of the All-Union Marine Geology and Geophysics Scientific Research Institute in 1967, which played a pivotal role in advancing geological research in Latvia. Key researchers such as R. Knaps, V. Ulsts, E. Grinbergs, and I. Veinbergs are mentioned for their significant contributions to studying coastal erosion, sediment flow, and the relief of the Baltic Sea. These experts embarked on expeditions, gathering valuable data and sediment samples, often using specialised ships for geodetic measurements. The text underscores the interdisciplinary nature of the research, involving collaboration between geographers, geologists, cartographers and other professionals. Their efforts led to the creation of detailed profiles, maps, and geological charts, contributing to a deeper understanding of Baltic Sea geology and coastal erosion patterns. The narrative also touches on the challenges and risks encountered during maritime expeditions, including unfortunate fatalities. The author concludes by highlighting ongoing engagement with the Latvian Geographical Society and collaboration with fellow researchers and educators in the field of geography. In essence, the text offers insights into the enduring contributions of Latvian geographers and maritime geologists in advancing the understanding of coastal dynamics, maritime geology, and larger endeavours of scientific exploration in the Baltic Sea region.

Streszczenie:
The historiography of maritime archaeology is one of margins and peripheries. Linked to the development of underwater archaeology, efforts to advance theoretical frameworks within the discipline have been slow at best. There remains a widespread assumption—even among archaeologists—that maritime archaeology deals mostly with shipwrecks and underwater sites, and as such, has little to contribute to broader debates in archaeology. Archaeology remains a terrestrial affair that rarely engages with water worlds, and when it does, it retains its feet firmly on ground. So what do a land archaeologist and an economist have to offer to the world of maritime archaeology? In spite of its terrestrial focus, The Dawn of Everything speaks to a number of recurring issues in maritime archaeology, where scholars worry about the relationship between terrestrial states and maritime worlds. Such concerns are central to the very constitution of maritime societies: are they hierarchical or heterarchical; are they the same as, or different from the wider societies in which they sit? In the maritime discourse, environmental determinism takes a greater role than Graeber and Wengrow would admit in their book. Graeber and Wengrow’s interest in fluid societies that have the capacity to construct and deconstruct themselves seasonally find their best laboratory in maritime cultural worlds. Both the ancient past and the ethnographic present provide us with an opportunity to understand the contingency of power and decision-making, all within the framework of a seasonal environmental landscape. If nothing else, The Dawn of Everything encourages us to look at each society on its own terms, so let us start by getting our feet wet.

Streszczenie:
This thesis explores the diversification of local livelihood structure and the political economy of resource use in two maritime communities in Krabi, Southern Thailand. The thesis is divided into four parts as follows: Part I (i.e. Chapter 2) examines the political economy of resource use in the Andaman Sea region. The objective of Part I is to place the research sites in a larger political-economic framework and to delineate the main problems that are found in this region. Part II focuses on the research sites. After setting the geographical and historical contexts, the economic organisation of the communities are unravelled in chapter 3. Chapter 4 examines the village household and gender issues with case studies to illustrate the points made. Part III (i.e. Chapter 5) examines at length the sources and patterns of livelihood in the research sites. The various economic activities that villagers engage in are explored in detail and case studies are used to illustrate the arguments made. Part IV consists of chapters 6 and 7. The objective of these two chapters is to reflect on the dilemmas villagers face in confronting change and their responses. Chapter 6 outlines the collective meso-level responses of fishing communities against the conflicts over local resources examined in Part I. In addition, the role of external agencies, namely Thai nongovernmental organisations, in these collective meso-level responses of local fishing communities is considered. Chapter 7 considers the position of contemporary maritime villagers in the modern capitalist world-economy. Chapter 8 concludes the thesis by summarising the main points made and by reflecting on the relationship between livelihoods and the environment in Krabi.

Fuquen, Gomez Clara. "Logboats of Coquí : an ethnographic approach to maritime material culture". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2014. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/370021/.

Streszczenie:
This thesis focuses on the traditional logboats of Coquí, an Afro-descendant community in the Pacific coast of Chocó, Colombia. It considers these boats as an entry point into the life of the community and explores the technological and functional aspects of the watercraft, their wider context, and related social practices. Based on a transdisciplinary approach, it draws on an ethnographic methodology to look at the question of whether and how the boats inform on the life of the community, their history, their identity and their maritime concerns. This thesis reflects upon the multiple ways in which people in Coquí relate to their boats and the many levels at which these boats operate. It demonstrates that the watercraft of the community of Coquí is significantly complex and holds a fundamental importance to their existence. The present study addresses the need of a comprehensive in-depth look at traditional boats in which the relationships between people and boats are as relevant as the pure technological and functional interests, dominant in the field of boat studies and maritime archaeology. It shows that ethnography is an effective methodology to unveil the richness of the materiality of social life, and the diversity of human engagements with the world.

Streszczenie:
Janet Taylor made major contributions to Victorian navigational practices. She did so through creating business opportunities for herself as an educator, author, and inventor of nautical instruments.
Master of Arts
Janet Taylor, a woman who made major contributions to Victorian navigation, is representative of a large historiographical gap in maritime and nautical histories. In these fields historians are typically inclined to look at famous men in navigation: John Hadley, John Campbell, and others who invented nautical instruments such as the octant and sextant. However, we have failed to contextualize the significant women who have innovated maritime practices throughout history. Taylor, for example, adjusted calculations for locating positions at sea according to the realization that the shape of the earth is not spherical, but spheroidal. She conveyed this new mathematical principle to the maritime community of London through the classes she taught at her nautical academies, the dozens of books she would publish, and the navigational tools she invented or innovated. Her multiple careers, and her success in each of them, were varied and far-reaching, making her truly a Jane of all trades. Her success as a woman in a male-dominated field was largely dependent on the industrial spirit of the nation and time in which she lived. As the industrial revolution created a need for advancement in technology and navigation, gender norms and the public/private dichotomy of Victorian England began to blur.

Streszczenie:
This work presents new methodological approaches and perspectives on the relationship between past humans and maritime environments by focusing specifically on the geochemical traces left by the users and inhabitants of coastlines. In order to do so it proposes four novel scientific techniques presented in four case-study papers, together with best practice protocols that archaeologists can use to conduct similar studies on other sites. These methods were designed to allow for convenient data collection, fast sample processing, sound statistical analysis, and meaningful data interpretations; all this in order to better understand past human activity in coastal areas. The thesis addresses various themes related to the character of human activity, its chronology, spatial distribution, zonation, and linkage to the neighboring waterbody. It tackles issues linked with geochemical signal preservation in different post-depositional contexts, and discusses various modes of soil sampling, extraction and elemental analysis (eg. colorimetric method, portable XRF or XRF core scanning), as well as problems related to geo-statistical analysis of complex, spatially distributed, multivariable datasets. In terms of its geographical scope, this thesis explores coastal sites and archaeological features in the North Atlantic region, and it covers vast chronological spectrum from the Stone Age to the Early Modern period. However, the results are considered universally applicable to any type of site and any period. Hopefully, by providing new sources of archaeological evidence, this work will inspire a lively discussion on the global maritime cultural landscape and the best methods for studying it.

Streszczenie:
Nautical archaeology has made remarkable advances since its inception half a century ago, but one area in need of more attention is the examination of cultural aspects of seafaring. This dissertation advances understanding of eighteenth- through early-twentieth century British and American maritime culture by exploring traditional memorialization practices. Interpretations are based primarily on analysis of 412 maritime memorials recorded during two archaeological surveys in Great Britain and the United States. In addition, primary accounts from the Age of Sail are utilized to place maritime memorialization into its proper cultural and historical context. Research reveals three major themes in Anglo-American maritime memorialization. First, memorials show a striking concern for the dangers and hardships of life at sea. Numerous memorials describe the perils of the natural world and the group values that mariners developed to cope with the ever-present possibility of sudden death. Such values include attention to duty, courage, group loyalty, self-sacrifice, and pride. Second, maritime communities faced the problem of commemorating those who never returned from the sea. Many sailors were lost at sea or died aboard ship or in distant lands. In the vast majority of such cases, the body was never returned home, and many did not receive proper burial. As a result, family members and fellow sailors created memorials to honor the lost and to symbolically lay the deceased to rest. Evidence indicates, however, that such attempts were not entirely satisfactory. Many epitaphs lament the fact that empty graves cannot provide an adequate substitute for missing bodies. Finally, investigation revealed a significant increase in religious sentiment on maritime memorials from the mid-nineteenth century until the end of the Age of Sail. It is suggested that the increase in maritime religious sentiment was linked to nineteenth-century religious reform movements. The prevalence of religious imagery and inscriptions on maritime memorials during this time, however, probably does not indicate that most sailors became religious. Rather, most religious maritime memorials were erected by sailors' families. This suggests that maritime families turned to religion as a source of comfort when faced with the deaths of loved ones at sea.

This thesis proposes a detailed analysis of Butonese maritime activities as well as a dialogue between this ethnographic case study and its Austronesian context. The analysis relies in particular on Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological analysis of perception and on Vygotsky's historico-cultural conception of cognition. Besides presenting a wealth of new data about the Butonese world (and more specifically the cia-cia linguistic area), the analysis developed here leads to major contributions about the reconstruction of the Austronesian world, the universalism-relativism debate within cognitive anthropology and the use of ethnographic methodology - emphasizing on the ethnographer's own transformation.

In this study, exploratory tow tank tests and computational fluid dynamics simulations were carried out with a Suboff model in configurations relevant to semi-submersible vehicles. At different speeds, the optimal drag-lift ratio is found to occur at different submergences, whereas the downward suction force monotonically increases with increasing speed and decreases with increasing draft. The lift center exhibits non-monotonic behavior at variable speeds. Computational simulation results demonstrated good agreement with experimental data and provided insight on contributions of pressure and friction drag components and flow features around hulls. The presented data can be useful for developers of semi-submersible vehicles.

Streszczenie:
Shipboard applications of lightweight structures have increased over the past decade in both military and commercial vessels. Severe distortions have emerged as a major obstacle to the cost-effective fabrication of such lightweight structures. With a recent major initiative funded by the U.S. Navy Office of Naval Research, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems (NGSS) has undertaken a comprehensive assessment of lightweight structure technology. This program includes a comprehensive investigation of the fabrication and assembly processes for thin steel structures and their contributions to the final dimensional accuracy and distortion. As part of this effort, substantial work was done to characterize current dimensional quality performance in partial sub-unit (PSU) and combined partial sub-unit (CPSU) assemblies, and to identify contributing factors to dimensional inaccuracy and distortion in unit assembly stages. This information will be used by NGSS as a basis for improvements in fitting and welding processes, jigging and fixturing methods, dimensioning and tolerancing, and accuracy control processes. This paper summarizes the current dimensional quality performance in PSU and CPSU at NGSS, and the contributing factors to current performance.

The maritime transportation mode is the primary means for global goods movement, transforming ports into pivotal logistics centers in the operationalization of the supply chain. Due to its significance, terminals are constantly pressured to seek improvements in operational efficiency, relying on innovations as a necessary alternative to achieve their objectives. In this research, a case study was conducted at the private port in the city of Navegantes, located in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, being one of the national leading in container handling volume. The research aims to develop a performance evaluation model to support the management of external innovation in the port. The intervention tool used was the Multicriteria Decision Aiding-Constructivist (MCDA-C) methodology, which, through primary and secondary data, enables the construction of a customized model according to the decision-maker's preferences and organizational context. The results presented by the model highlighted opportunities for improvement in the port's relationship with other external actors, as there is no formal and organized procedure for seeking external cooperation for the development of innovative solutions. At the same time, the management understands the importance of innovations for the sustainability of the company, investing, albeit in a decentralized manner, in improvements of both internal and external origin. The research contributes to the growth of the literature on the subject, in addition to offering practical contributions to the port of Navegantes in the form of a model capable of supporting innovation management, generating knowledge, highlighting critical points, and outlining improvement plans.

Streszczenie:
The Tay people are an ethnic minority of Vietnam. Tay literature has many unique facets with relevance to cultural identity. It plays an important part in the diversity and richness of Vietnamese literature. In this study, Tay literature in Vietnam is analyzed through a cultural perspective, by placing Tay literature in its development from its birth to the present, together with the formation of the ethnic group, and historical and cultural conditions, focusing on the typical customs of the Tay people in Vietnam. The researcher examines Tay literature through poems of Nôm Tày, through the works of some prominent authors, such as Vi Hong, Cao Duy Son, in the Cao Bang province of Vietnam. Cao Bang is home to many Tay ethnic people and many typical Tay authors. The research also locates individual contributions of those authors and their works in terms of artistic language use and cultural symbolic features of the Tay people. In terms of art language, the article isolates the unique use of Nôm Tay characters to compose stories which affect the traditional Tay luon, sli, and so forth, and hence the use of language that influences poetry and proverbs of Tay people in the story of Vi Hong, Cao Duy Son. Assuming a symbolic framework, the article examines the symbols of birds and flowers in Nôm Tay poetry and the composition of Vi Hong, Cao Duy Son, so to point out the uniqueness of the Tay identity. The above research issue is necessary to help us better appreciate the cultural values preserved in Tay literature, thereby, affirming the unique cultural identity of the Tay people and planning to preserve and develop these unique cultural features from which emerges the risk of falling into oblivion in modern social life in Vietnam. In addition, this is also a research direction that can be extended to Thai, Mong, Dao, etc, ethnic minorities in Vietnam.

Streszczenie:
In ships, the generation of energy is carried out by generator sets and short distances with a direct connection between generation and consumption. Traditionally, a power plant is designed with efficiency criteria and for resistive loads, being able to not adequately supply the current higher than the nominal one that demands, during a few seconds the direct start of an electrical motor. Traditionally Power Factor is 0,8, for a better stability with modern electrical loads, electrical motor and electronic converters, should be 0,4 or less. The usual on-board synchronous alternators, generate significant voltage drops in the event of 200% overloads, due to their internal reactance. This reactance is much higher than that of a transformer of the same power, which is why the starting current of an electric motor with half the power of the alternator, generates a much larger voltage dip than when it is powered by a transformer in a network of infinite power. Our terrestrial formation tends to assume the voltage stability, associated with the power supply, with transformers and to ignore the internal voltage drop of the generator, associated with the reactive energy demanded by inductive loads or rotating electrical machines. The internal voltage drop of the alternator due to an overload can be compensated with the (AVR) system, which acts on the excitation of the alternator, increasing its electromotive force (e.m.f.). It has a reaction time of about 100 ms, which significantly reduces the motor's starting performance, lengthening its acceleration transient. A more powerful alternator, with a lower internal reactance, is the best solution to reduce voltage dips. It does not significantly penalize friction because it has very high efficiency. Economically, this oversizing is cheaper than doing it on the Diesel. This paper, based in the PhD works of Mr Antonio Herrero Sabat, entitled “Contributions to the Stability of Marine Power Generation Plants, with Flywheels “, pending defence in (FNB-UPC).

Streszczenie:
Since January 2011, when calculations of shafting transient torsional vibrations caused by ice impacts became mandatory, numerous modeling-based analyses have been carried out for the ice class ships. However, their number is still not sufficient to learn from the experience and draw general conclusions about the shafting response in ice conditions. The major reasons of this could be summarized as follows. First of all, lack of an effective and physically meaningful tool for the prediction of transient vibrations makes the analysis rather difficult. Secondly, some simplifying assumptions about the response of the propulsion system in ice conditions are to be made because the consideration and addressing the complex nature of a propulsion system in practical design are impossible for many reasons. Third of all, various underlying uncertainties in the input data put a shaft designer in situation when he needs to make a choice. This paper is an attempt to make some contributions to the presentation and analysis of the propulsion shafting torsional vibration induced by propeller-ice interaction. Two practical examples: one - for a polar class ship with direct coupled diesel engine and another one - for the case of a geared propulsion unit are considered. Some uncertainties in analysis of the induced ice-related torques are considered and assessed.
