Streszczenie:
This study provides a content analysis of television families portrayed in family-focused programs aired between 2004 and 2013. The analysis focuses on family configuration type, parent type and marital status, and the frequency and gender of children characters, as well as each program's genre, channel type, and target audience. The study uses cultivation theory as the basis of understanding and aims to anticipate television's potential effects and raise important questions that should be addressed in future studies. Results indicate that the traditional nuclear family configuration held the largest portion of the television family landscape. The study found an increase in single-parent families and a decrease in reconstituted families portrayed on television. Significantly, the content analysis revealed a new family configuration type that had not been identified in previous studies: nuclear with same-sex parents. The study found more single mothers than single fathers and discovered that single mothers had significantly fewer male children, pointing out a potential issue in terms of single-parent gender. The content analysis found more male children than female children; however, four years of data included more females than males, indicating possible movement toward equal representation of both genders. This study calls out the importance of educating young television audiences regarding the increasing complexity of the modern-day television family. The potential cultivation effect of family-related television programming could affect society's views of the importance of family—an issue that should be explored in future research. Other areas for future studies include trends related to television families with same-sex parents and extended family member dynamics as portrayed on television.

Streszczenie:
Considerable empirical evidence supports the existence of parental stereotypes. However, the content of these stereotypes is less clear (Valiquette-Tessier, Vandette, & Gosselin, 2015; Valiquette-Tessier, Gosselin, Thomassin, & Young, 2018). Therefore, this study aims to (a) explore stereotypes associated with divorced, step, single, same-sex and adoptive mothers and fathers, in comparison to the stereotypes associated to married mothers and fathers, and (b) assess if a set of independent variables predicts the ratings on the stereotypical content. The procedure employed in this study constitutes the most common strategy for the measurement of stereotypes, that is the three steps method (Bennett & Jamieson, 1999). To fulfill the objectives, one sample t tests and linear regressions were conducted. Results showed that married parents are highly regarded despite the parent gender, and that divorced parents are strongly negatively regarded again for both genders. Single, step, and lesbian/gay parents remain generally negatively stereotyped, despite some more positive views that have emerged here and there. Finally, adoptive parents are stereotyped in a manner that is very similar to married parents, and are even seen more positively on some aspects. On the other part, for both mothers and fathers, the gender and parental status all reached statistical significance in predicting stereotypic category a number of times. However, while age was the most often significant predictor within mothers' reduced models, it never appeared as a significant predictor within fathers' reduced models. Moreover, ethnicity was a significant predictor in many fathers' reduced models, but only reached statistical significance in a few of the mothers' reduced models. The number of times relationship status and sexual orientation came up as statistically significant is relatively similar within both mothers and fathers' models, as was educational attainment which never reach statistical significance in any of the reduced models.

The purpose of this study was to explore the extent that family physicians believe their patients could benefit from marriage and family therapy-related care, the extent of their experiences of collaborating with family therapists, and their interest in future collaboration with family therapists. Limitations family physicians face when providing psychosocial care as well as roadblocks they face when making mental health referrals and collaborating with family therapists were also explored. Sixty-four percent of the 240 family physicians surveyed responded to the mailed questionnaire. Descriptive statistics are provided for the quantitative analysis, while content analysis was used to evaluate the qualitative data. Quantitative results revealed that family physicians do detect psychosocial concerns in patient encounters, even when those concerns are not the presenting complaint, but face limitations and roadblocks to adequately addressing these concerns. The most common form of collaboration that the respondents expressed interest in was referring out with collaborative communication continuing with the family therapist, but other forms were also identified.

Streszczenie:
Background: Family firms have a strong impact on the world’s well-being, in terms of social stability, international wealth creation, and global development. Advisors appear essential to ensure the family firms’ prosperity and success, representing a potential source of advantage. There are several types of advisors working for family firms. Our study focuses on formal advisors (i.e. professionals, legally hired and paid by family firms), that either provide process or content advisory. Process advisors focus more on family dynamics and processes (e.g. relational and emotional aspect), while content advisors provide strategic services and specialized knowledge. Research Purpose: To understand how the approaches of advising family firms differ among formal business advisors.Research Problem: When advising family firms, two main type of issues can emerge. Soft issues regard personal and relational features, like emotions, while hard issues are emitted from the business, and are related to profitability and finance. In our critical literature review, we identify a gap in the existing knowledge regarding how advisors deal with soft issues when advising family firms. Although the unique characteristics and issues of family firms lead them to seek for specialized advice, they seem to be dissatisfied with the advisors’ ability to address soft issues. On the other side, content advisors show frustration in dealing with them. Research Questions: (1) How do content advisors perceive and address family firms’ soft issues? (2) How do process advisors perceive and address family firms’ soft issues? Method: Ontology – Relativism; Epistemology – Social constructionism; Methodology –Exploratory Qualitative Interview-based Study; Data collection – In-depth Interviews; Sampling – Two Purposive Criterion Samples of Content (i.e. accountants) and Process Advisors (i.e. family business advisors) (seven respondents each one); Data Analysis – Content Analysis (creation of a tree-diagram based on codes, sub-categories, categories, main categories)Conclusion: We develop a model describing how content and process advisors perceive and address soft issues, pointing out the identified differences in their approaches. Furthermore, our results suggest the existence of two level of soft issues, which adds new insights to the existing academic knowledge. Managerial Implications: We develop six main managerial implications for both content and process advisors, which we recommend as inputs facilitating the advisors’ work with family firms.

Streszczenie:
The field of marriage and family therapy (MFT) has enjoyed tremendous growth over the past 60 years. As the charismatic pioneers of MFT strove to gain legitimacy in the early years, the culture of MFT lacked a focus on quality empirical research needed to lend credibility to the field. In the past 20 years, a surge of efficacy and effectiveness research has pointed the field in a positive direction. Doctoral dissertations offer valuable insight into what is being learned by future researchers and suggest in what direction the field is heading. Previous articles voice concern over a gap between researchers producing the research and therapists who should be a vital consumer. A content analysis was performed on all 157 doctoral dissertations from 19 COAMFTE-accredited Ph.D. programs between the years of 2005 and 2008. The sample was gathered through the ProQuest thesis and dissertation database. Dissertations were coded according to research methodology, clinical focus, and whether they were published. Results showed that women consisted of two-thirds (n = 106) of the dissertations finished within the timeframe and that men published on average more than women. Findings also suggest a significant lack of dissertations being published (16.5%; n = 26) with downward trends from 2005 to 2008. Out of the dissertations published, however, the quality was high with a mean impact factor of .940. Trends show an increase in qualitative research and a noticeable lack of process research. Of all the dissertations produced within 2005 and 2008, almost one in five dissertations lacked explicit clinical application in the study. Ways to improve the amount of clinically relevant research are discussed. Suggestions are made as to the role of advisors in the publication process as well as to improve the quantity of dissertations published in COAMFTE-accredited doctoral programs.

The purpose of the study was to explore the leadership actions and activities that contributed to the implementation of a schoolwide family engagement initiative in a school. A qualitative content analysis of secondary data design was used to investigate the intentional actions and activities of a school leadership team during the implementation of a family engagement initiative within an elementary school. The Coherence Framework (Fullan & Quinn, 2016) provided a lens for which to investigate schoolwide change across drivers and sub-drivers. The findings of this study describe intentional leadership actions and activities when communicating with families, conducting formal assessments, and facilitating professional development. Patterns from the analysis indicate school leaders engage in intentional leadership actions and activities across all drivers and sub-drivers within the Coherence Framework (Fullan & Quinn, 2016). Family engagement practices are driven by core beliefs and consideration of the establishment of collective efficacy within the Coherence Framework may better support implementation of school change within family engagement implementation.

Streszczenie:
A review of the literature reveals two significant gaps in existing psychological research into eating disorders. First, despite a clear association between dysfunctional family environment and eating psychopathology, little is known about factors that might mediate between the two. Second, cognitive-behavioural treatment is unexpectedly ineffective in anorexia nervosa or in some cases of bulimia nervosa. To fill these gaps, the present research investigated the role of core beliefs in the aetiology and treatment of eating disorders. Given their early origin, core beliefs may plausibly mediate between family environment and eating disorders. In addition, unhealthy core beliefs might explain the resistance to cognitive-behavioural treatment in some instances. The thesis first considers the relationship between unhealthy core beliefs and eating psychopathology in anorexic and bulimic women. This is followed by an examination of core beliefs as an outcome predictor in cognitive-behavioural treatment for eating disorders. Finally, the role of core beliefs as a mediator between dysfunctional family environment and eating disorders is investigated. The results demonstrate high levels of unhealthy core beliefs in both anorexic and bulimic women. These core beliefs also predict the level of symptom reduction following cognitive-behavioural treatment, but only in the bulimic women. While core beliefs play a perfect mediating role in the family interaction-eating disorders link in bulimia nervosa, this relationship is less clear-cut in anorexia nervosa.

Streszczenie:
This study aimed to model the process and its relevant variables in predicting the willingness in home care and actual institutionalization of older persons with dementia in a Hong Kong context. This was a secondary data analysis of a previous research study which collected 122 sample of Chinese caregivers and their older care recipients with clinical diagnosis of dementia, all of whom recruited from a local NGO. Participants were assessed on a battery of instruments that collected both caregivers and patients' characteristics, including demographic details, patients “physical states affected by dementia, caregivers” perceived burden. The period of study was 12 months, with follow up phone calls on state of care every 6 months. Only a very weak relation was shown between expressed intention to care and actual placement at 12M. Higher odds in intention for home care was significantly predicted by male gender in caregiver gender and lower caregiver burden (ZBI score); ZBI was a total mediator between patients' agitation (CMAI score) and willingness. Higher odds of actual institutionalization was related to the use of day care centre. Results called for a need to carefully distinguish the genuinely effective services in helping to delay nursing home placement; rather than assuming all to be useful. While caregivers training was not popular among current sample, current model showed the importance of caregivers' perceived burden in altering objective environmental stress' effect on caregiving outcomes. While more than half of the current sample was using day care centre, model suggested day care centre could have encouraged placement. More resources should be allocated in programmes that aimed to manage caregivers' stress and cognition. There should also be more promotions to heighten awareness and participation of such programmes amongst caregivers of HKG.

As an art educator, I found student art lacking in meaning and students lacking personal engagement. I sought a way to engage students in more meaningful art-making in the classroom by exploring family heritage and personal spaces. This case study searched the family heritage and personal spaces of students in a junior high art class to engage students and find deeper meaning and context for student art-making. The research was informed through an arts-based inquiry with a/r/tographic influence. It was a qualitative inquiry, mining the familiar for development of a curriculum rich in context and personal significance for students. This inquiry examined the influences of family through art-making and research into the visual culture of student homes and heritage. We curated our personal spaces and made art that reflected our findings, keeping reflexive journals of our experiences, and exhibiting our art in a culmination of our research. The results were meaningful content in student art as well as more enthusiastic engagement in the art making process. This experience gleaned more than just student art rich in meaning, but in a deeper understanding of one another in our classroom.

Newbery books are a reliable representation of quality children's literature. They have not previously been formally evaluated by the family structures represented in the books. This content analysis considered 87 contemporary realistic fiction Newbery winner and Honor books since the 1930s that portray families in English-speaking, western settings. The family structures portrayed in these books were compared with the family structure categories of the decade in which each book is set. Percentage comparisons revealed that the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s do not represent the actual family structures of their time period. After the Age of New Realism began in the mid 60s, the family structures in the books more closely matched the family structures of their decade, but several discrepancies remained.

Scheepers, Jessica. "The meaning of success : perspectives of family business owners using word associations". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1018512.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Despite family business researchers having worked towards an understanding of how family businesses obtain success or achieve satisfaction, much confusion and debate on how to define success still exist in the field. It is suggested that defining success in terms of a family business is problematic because even family members themselves have varying perceptions of success. This confusion and debate has in recent years led to an increase in research concerning the meaning of success in the context of family businesses. Defining success is necessary, because if family businesses do not know what success means and what they are working towards, they will not know what decisions to make in order to be successful. Against this background, the primary objective of this study was to establish the perceptions of the concept of success among family business owners. For the purpose of this study, a mixed methodology was adopted because the data was collected using a qualitative method but analysed using a quantitative method. This study used a free word association test – which is a qualitative projective technique – to collect the data, which was then analysed by means of summative manifest content analysis which is a quantitative research method. Convenience sampling was used to identify small business owners to undergo the word association tests. By means of these tests, 811 words/phrases were generated by the 50 small non-family and 51 small family business owners who participated in the study. Theoretical, data, investigator and methodological triangulation was used to ensure the validity of the study whereas credibility, transferability, dependability, confirmability and authenticity were applied to ensure its reliability. A coding framework was developed and several analyses were undertaken to summarise the data. The nature and position of the words/phrases recalled as well as the most frequently occurring words/phrases recalled were reported on. To determine whether significant differences exist between the different sample groups, Chi-square statistics were calculated to ascertain statistical significance and Craemer’s V statistics to establish practical significance. The findings of this study show that small non-family business owners mostly associate business success with non-financial indicators. These non-family business owners perceive a successful small business as one that is customer-focused, provides quality service and is characterised by discipline, drive and determination. Similarly, the findings show that the small family business owners participating in this study mostly associate family business success with words/phrases of a non-financial nature. The family business owners perceived a successful family business as one where, in addition to financial returns, discipline, drive and determination, as well as trust, honesty and hard work prevail. Even though both non-family and family business owner participants mostly recalled words/phrases of a non-financial nature, non-family business owners were mainly concerned with being customer-focused and proving quality, whereas family business owners focused more on values such as discipline, drive and determination as well as trust and honesty. Based on the perceptions of success among family business owners, a workable definition of “family business success” was formulated. Family business owners mainly perceive a successful family business as one where, in addition to financial returns, values such as discipline, drive and determination as well as trust, honesty and hard work prevail in the organisational culture of their businesses. Investigating the meaning of success in the field of family business has become a topic of growing interest. This study is one of the first in South Africa to adopt a qualitative dominant approach in attempting to overcome the lack of consensus, as well as to gain greater clarity regarding the way in which success is defined by family businesses. It is hoped that the results of this study will provide family business owners as well as practitioners and researchers in the field with a better understanding of what family business success entails. This understanding offers the potential to guide and improve goal-setting and strategic processes by family businesses, resulting in fewer family business failures and ultimately improving the South African economy.

Wines are an important source of phenolic compounds. Red wines have a polyphenol content (especially tannins but also anthocyanins, flavonols, resveratrol and phenolic acids) considerably higher and different than whites. The phenolic content of wines is often described by two values that are called IPT and is representative of the total phenolic profile and anthocyanin index that is representative of the anthocyanins of a wine. The goal of this study is to try understanding how the different phenolic families contribute to the total polyphenolic index of the wine. For this reason representative compounds of some major phenolic families have been studied. The molecular absorbance was measured by a UV spectrophotometer at wavelength of 280 nm. From the result we calculated the polyphenolic index per milligram and the polyphenolic index of each compound used. This gave us an idea of the ‘’weight’’ that the different molecules have. Continuously combinations in pairs were made in order to try simulate better the wine environment. From the result obtained, we understood that total polyphenolic index per milligram for wine is a very complicated variable based both, in the ‘’weight’’ that the phenolic compounds have but also in the proportion that can be found in wine

More research is needed to fully understand the way in which parents, particularly fathers, are portrayed in family films and the effects those portrayals might have. Viewers, particularly parents, need to understand how the material their children view presents reality and how it may shape their children's perspectives of the real world, particularly where the family unit and parenting role are concerned. By exploring these portrayals through the lens of Cultivation Theory, this study sought to answer this overarching question: How are fathers portrayed in family films as opposed to television? This quantitative study explores the top twenty films from the 1980s, the 1990s and the decade spanning 2004-2014 in order to ascertain this. Families within those films, particularly parents and most specifically fathers, are the primary subjects of study. Observations were made through content analysis. The findings show that fathers are portrayed more positively in family films than they are on television. The data suggest that the differences between fathers and mothers in film are not so marked and sexist as they are in television shows, and that fathers may exert a stronger and more positive role in film families than they do in television families. This study begins to establish film as a genre to further be explored as a medium for family relations studies as television has been. Film is a powerful media tool in its own right and should further be studied with regard to portrayal of families in its material.

Sexual minority individuals face disparities of treatment from clinical and medical health professionals. In particular, there is a dearth of research and training surrounding human sexuality topics for sexual minorities. Research on sexual minority groups in this area can contribute to reducing treatment disparities. Consequently, the proposed study is a content analysis of social science literature in order to gauge trends in the amount of research focused on the intersection of sexual minorities and sex research. Articles from a database search of relevant keywords were coded for several variables, including overall level of focus on sexual minorities and on human sexuality topics, study sample composition, research funding sources, and whether the article offered any clinical implications. The study aims, with its results, to suggest possible directions for social science and sex research, in the hopes that future research will be better able to assist professionals in meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse population.

Streszczenie:
Family businesses are generally considered to be the most prevalent form of business around the world. They have also been shown to differ from their non-family counterparts due the non-economic factors that influence their decision-making. One of the most widely used conceptualization of these factors concerns the controlling family’s socioemotional endowment or in other words, the family’s socioemotional wealth. Newer approaches have proposed that socioemotional wealth can not only be broken down into several component dimensions, but that these dimensions may shift in prioritization in response to different contingencies. The sudden spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and the global crisis that has followed in its wake is one such contingency, impacting economies and family firms virtually everywhere in the world. Studying the crisis’ effects on family firms has thus already been outlined as a major focus of research going forward. This paper aims to develop the concept of socioemotional wealth as a dynamic construct and study the crisis’ effects on family firms. We conduct a content analysis of 20 Swedish and 20 German publicly listed family firms’ statements to shareholders published over a three-year period coinciding with the emergence of the crisis. Thus, this research presents an empirical look at how family firms in the contexts of two differing governmental responses to the crisis prioritized the different dimensions of their socioemotional wealth. The results show the families’ emotional attachment coming to the forefront in both cases, with no significant difference between the two countries’ family firms. Furthermore, we observe the families’ socioemotional ties to their employees retain their pre-crisis prevalence as the most prioritized dimension. This is accompanied by a deepening of the quality of the communication tied to this dimension of socioemotional wealth with it coming to reflect the emerging solidarity and cultural changes resulting from the crisis. The results suggest that family firms may respond to a crisis on the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic through their decision-making being increasingly influenced by their emotional attachment to the firm, while also retaining a focus on preserving strong social ties to their employees to persevere through the difficult period.

Heart failure is a growing public health problem associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Family support positively affects outcomes for the person with heart failure while also leading to caregiver burden. Registered nurses have a key role in supporting and meeting the needs of family caregivers. The overall aim was to explore the situation and needs of family caregivers to a person with heart failure, and explore requisites and ways of supporting and involving family caregivers in heart failure nursing care. Two interview studies, one web survey study and one intervention study were conducted between 2012 and 2017. A total of 22 family caregivers, eight persons with heart failure and 331 registered nurses participated in the studies. Family caregivers' daily life was characterized by worry, uncertainty and relational incongruence but salutogenic behaviours restored new strength and motivation to care. Family caregivers experienced that their caregiving was taken for granted by health care professionals. Family caregivers expressed a need for a permanent health care contact and more involvement in the planning and implementation of their near one’s health care together with health care professionals. Registered nurses acknowledged family caregivers’ burden, lack of knowledge and relational incongruence. A registered nurse was suggested as a permanent health care contact to improve continuity and security. Registered nurses neither acknowledged family caregivers as a resource nor their need for involvement. Registered nurses working in primary health care centres, in nurse-led heart failure clinics, with district nurse specialization, with education in cardiac nursing care held the most supportive attitudes toward family involvement in heart failure nursing care. Family health conversations via telephone in nurse-led heart failure clinics were found to successfully support and involve families. The conversations enhanced nurse-family relationship and relations within the family. They also provided registered nurses with new, relevant knowledge and understanding about the family as a whole. Family health conversations via telephone were feasible to both families and registered nurses, although fewer and shorter conversations were preferred by registered nurses. This thesis highlights the divergence between family caregivers’ experiences and needs, and registered nurses’ perceptions about family caregivers’ situation and attitudes toward the importance of family involvement. It adds to the knowledge on the importance to acknowledge family caregivers as a resource and to support and involve them in heart failure nursing care. One feasible and successful way is to conduct Family health conversations via telephone in nurse-led heart failure clinics.

Streszczenie:
This study was funded by a scholarship from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) as a Minor Field Study. The social economic development in Tanzania is a major challenge due to a continuing high rate of population growth. A growing   population   puts   increased   strain   on   healthcare,   food   supply   and   the environment.  Early childbearing limits women’s ability to educate themselves and contribute to society. The definition of family planning (FP) is to keep a sustainable population growth through reducing the family size. The government of Tanzania has developed  a  plan  for  FP,  which  includes  a  goal  that  60  percent  of  women  in reproductive age will use contraceptives in 2015. Healthcare professionals have a great potential to encourage lifestyles changes. It is therefore important to investigate the nurses’ experiences of teaching FP to increase the knowledge about their experiences. The aim of the study is to investigate nurses’ experiences of education about FP in the Rufiji district in Tanzania. This is a qualitative study and the data was collected through interviews using a semi structured open-ended question guide. The nurses’ experiences of teaching patients in FP concerns four different areas. Firstly, they have a variety of strategies to execute the education. Secondly, they describe what is necessary to create a meeting with the patient. Thirdly, the patients have needs that have to be met in a learning situation. Finally, even though it’s subtle, they empower the patient, which lays the foundation for making lifestyle changes. The key finding that the nurses spoke of as the  most  important  factor  when  teaching  is  the  importance  of  creating  a  good relationship with the patient.

The aim of this research is to examine the determinants of the level of corporate risk disclosure (CRD) in the interim reports of Swedish non-financial companies. A quantitative research approach is used, the sample data of which consist of 166 firms with 4,849 interim reports over a 10-year period. By utilizing the notion of risk and its definition, I have distinguished three categories of risk, namely risk as uncertainty, risk as threat and risk as opportunity. A systematic content analysis is conducted with the use of a software program, which is specifically designed for this purpose. The number of sentences that contain keywords related to the three risk categories is counted as the total CRD score, which is transformed to the disclosure index. I have examined the impact of firms’ characteristics and corporate governance mechanisms on the level of CRD based on agency theory. The ordinary least squares regression method with  control for fixed year effects is used to analyse the data, which show that firm size and audit committee have a positive relationship with the level of corporate risk disclosure. The result demonstrates also that there is a negative relationship between family ownership and the level of CRD, and an insignificant relationship between leverage and the level of CRD.

This thesis was designed to determine whether there are significant differences in family sitcoms between type of response and family type; between action and family type; between type of interaction and family type; and whether there are more positive than negative responses on both types of sitcoms.Seven nuclear and single-parent family situation comedies which are presently being shown on network prime-time television were compared to one another. A content analysis using a goodness-of-fit test was utilized to determine if parenting differences between the two types of family situation comedies existed.A chi-square showed that there is no difference between the number of negative and positive scenes in each type of sitcom. Finally, it was shown that no major parenting differences exist between single-parent and nuclear family sitcoms presently viewed on network prime-time television.

The purpose of this dissertation was threefold. First, this researcher identified and critically examined selected characteristics of professional social science journal articles related to African American grandparents; the level of their involvement/role (arbiter for parent-child conflict, bearer of family history, caretaker/ childrearing, emotional gratification, gift giving, passing traditions/values and role modeling). Secondly, this researcher identified and evaluated selected characteristics (race, gender, university affiliation and academic degree) of all authors associated with articles chosen for this dissertation study to determine who were writing these articles. Finally, a content analysis exploring direction of inclusion or exclusion of grandparents and scope of literature and research related to the dissertation as discovered in articles of professional social science journals covering a 16-year study period. Survey research and content analysis techniques were utilized to examine relevant articles in professional social science journals in a pool of 12,082 articles for the study period. Implications for counseling African Americans and Black family research are included. Limitations inherent in this study were that (1) relevant journal articles may have been overlooked because the authors used terms in their title or text which 'were related to African American grandparents but were unknown to the researcher; (2) the researcher assumed that descriptive data were necessary to analyze study journals and authors as well as to provide an analysis of the direction and scope of literature and research; and (3) a total of three (3) years of study journals were unavailable to the researcher which altered the number and percent of pages and articles pertaining to African American grandparents issues. Directions for future study conclude this investigation.

Research relevant to the unique needs and experiences of racial/ethnic/cultural (REC) minority groups in social science literature is essential to the work of policymakers and clinical practitioners. However, the social sciences have traditionally failed to publish a sufficient number of articles that address these needs and experiences or even adequately report the racial and ethnic makeup of their samples. The purpose of this study is to provide an updated look at Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) literature and how often sample participants’ ethnicity is reported, how frequently studies focus on ethnic issues or specific REC minority groups, which REC minority groups and topics receive the most attention in minority-focused studies, which REC minority groups and topics receive the most attention in funded studies, and how these trends have changed over time. Specifically, five journals (American Journal of Family Therapy, Family Process, Journal of Family Therapy, Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, and Contemporary Family Therapy) were selected for inclusion in the analysis and were examined inclusively from 2000-2017. Results and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Many older youth in foster care lack adequate resources and ongoing support in their social networks as they transition into young adulthood, while other youth in these circumstances experience stable social networks providing comprehensive support. Systematically measuring the supportive personal and service-oriented relationships in youth networks expands the scope of inquiry in this area by identifying patterns of social network structure, member composition, and relational qualities that are associated with more or less support provision through formal and informal relationships. These can also be measured over time to observe changes in network form and content and assess network stability. This exploratory study (1) describes the support networks for a small sample of youth with foster care experience who are enrolled in post-secondary education and training programs, (2) assesses changes in these networks over time, and (3) demonstrates the reliability and validity of this methodology for broader use with populations of transition-age foster youth. Findings show that family (biological and foster) and friends are the most prevalent informal supports, relationship ties to parent figures are strongest and provide the most stable and multi-dimensional support, and ties with formal service providers are not as strong, but provide more informational support. The stability of a network ties over time is associated with the breadth of support provided, and network-based social support is associated with post-secondary enrollment at follow-up. Support network profiles are described and interpreted in terms of bonding and bridging social capital. Discussion includes implications for future support network research and guidelines for pre-transition assessment of youth networks in practice.

Family firms play a crucial role in the world economy, and especially in Asia and continental Europe they are the most widespread form of incorporation. Italy in particular is a very interesting field of investigation, due to the high concentration of family firms in the country. Although corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been studied for many decades and arguments from different theoretical perspectives have been relied on to understand the phenomenon and corporate behavior, only a few studies, at our best knowledge, address the issue of corporate social responsibility in family business. This doctoral thesis aims at addressing the rising call for further and detailed research on the topic. The first chapter examines the way in which large Italian companies communicate their social responsible initiatives and principles. Through a content analysis all the reported information is coded and classified in order to allow a structured and formal study, supported by a statistical test performed in order to detect significant differences between family and non-family firms. The second chapter focuses on SMEs and aims at extending the understanding of their socially responsible behavior, through a qualitative methodology. The study consists of four case studies in order to have a comprehensive picture of their approach to CSR, as regards the diffusion of CSR at various organizational levels, the identification of the motivations that the family adduces when accomplishing CSR initiatives, and the presence of the family as one of the main elements necessary for the continuity of these practices. Finally, the third chapter is based on data collected through a survey. The methodology adopted entails the regression analysis that allows to examine the impact of the family involvement in the business on the perception that CSR is a relevant practice for the business.

The purpose of this content analysis was to analyze the past 25 years of research in two major social work journals, Social Work and Research on Social Work Practice, to provide a status update on the amount of ethnic-focused research being published within the discipline. This analysis examined trends in ethnic-focused publications, the change across time in percent of focused articles, the top topics studied, per ethnic group, the top funded topics, most and least involved funding agencies, geographical groupings of focused samples, the setting of the samples, measures used, and the percentage of samples based in a clinical versus non-clinical setting. Results showed there has been continued growth and improvement in quality and quantity of minority-focused research in both journals, although there is still room for growth within the discipline towards increased multicultural competence. While the majority of focused research studied African American and Latinos, little attention was given to Asian and Native American populations. Furthermore, while almost twice as many focused articles were funded, compared to non-focused articles, the types of topics being funded are still not as representative of the needs of ethnic minority populations as they could be. While the increase in ethnic focused research over the past 25 years is promising, additional focus within the field is warranted. Suggestions are given to improve the quality and quantity of ethnic-focused research over time.

As we pass the decade mark of the Global War on Terrorism, the hidden causalities, such as the long-term impact of multiple deployments on marriages, become more apparent. Military couples experiencing repeated combat-related deployments are at an increased risk for marital distress, especially relationships that exhibit negative interaction patterns. Marriage and relationship education programs have the potential to equip military couples with conflict management skills, such as positive reframing and open communication, to increase marital satisfaction. This content analysis examined three relevant marriage and relationship education resources – PREP for Strong Bonds, ScreamFree Marriage, and Marriage LINKS - presently utilized by military couples. Each marriage and relationship education program reviewed utilized similar themes found in the research literature. Results of the analysis indicate a combination of their skill sets, accompanied by a concentration on specific challenges unique to military marriages, would be more effective in improving marital satisfaction than the models as they currently stand.

The study will begin by identifying various types of maltreatment that are committed against some of our Nation's youth while simultaneously assessing the physical, psychosocial and emotional symptoms associated with exposure to these horrible acts. Despite the incremental increase in government funding for the creation of various social service programs and services, this problem has stretched over time and its negative impact continues to drastically change the fragile lives of these at-risk youth. The bulk of this study is dedicated to analyzing what our government is currently doing to help prevent the occurrence and recurrence of abuse and neglect among these very valuable but inherently vulnerable young members of our society.

In order to gain a better understanding of how effective current practices, programs, and services are in addressing this issue, it is necessary to evaluate what the state and federal government is doing to prevent and hopefully eradicate these crimes perpetrated against children. Although this problem(s) had already been identified for decades, it wasn't until 2004 that a comprehensive evaluation of these social service agencies tasked to perform these preventive measures and restoration services was conducted. This evaluation known as the Child and Family Services Reviews and the instrument used to drive this process are scrutinized for their usefulness, practicality, validity, and reliability while focusing on ways to improve current practices. In the end, this study should serve as a recipe for implementing changes that will help to improve current evaluation practices, not only in states like New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia that were included in this study, but every county in all fifty states as well as Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.

Empirical evidence shows that successful marriages among African Americans are often more egalitarian than hierarchical; however, there was no known research that explored how curricula developers depict non-conventional gender roles in relationship education designed for African Americans. This content analysis involved exploration of nonconventional gender roles in three relationship education curricula developed for African Americans. Analyses included both the manifest (explicit) and latent (implicit) messages of the curricula to determine whether portrayals of gender roles were conventional or non-conventional. The PIES (Political/Intercultural/Economic/Social) model of marital dimensions allowed analysis of marital gender roles using an organizational analysis model that included the political (power structures and decision-making), intercultural (values and beliefs about manhood and womanhood), economic (employment and education of the couple), and social (domestic roles and responsibilities) dimensions of marriage. Results of the study revealed that the intercultural dimension tended toward conventional characteristics, even when the political, economic, and social dimensions were non-conventional. The results suggested that curricula developers design curricula based on conventional contexts of marriage that do not include African Americans’ historical context of marital gender roles in the United States. Two of the curricula described titular type leadership that combines aspects of conventional and nonconventional gender roles in the PIES model and is most effective when husbands practice servant leadership. Explicit instruction about gender roles through the PIES model was a suggestion to help resolve the cognitive dissonance created by conflicting ontological perspectives, especially in Biblical contexts.

Streszczenie:
Nymphaea petersiana Klotzsch (Nyika) is an important wild tuber eaten in some districts of Malawi. The tubers were processed by boiling/freeze-drying(BFD) and sun-drying(USD). The tuber's nutrient and antinutrient composition was determined to produce a preliminary nutrient data base for use in sub-Saharan Africa. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in protein content of BFDand USD samples. Sun-dried samples were significantly (P < .05) higher in ash than boiled samples while boiled samples were significantly higher (P < .05) in crude fat and total carbohydrate. The protein content of the tubers (8.0 and 8.1 %) was higher than that of the staple maize (7.9%), African millets (unspecified) (7.5%), and polished rice (7.0%), but lower than sorghum (10.7%). Protein content was higher than tubers like cassava (1.3%), potato (2%), sweet potato (1.6%), yams (1.5%) and N. lotus (5.2). Nyika tubers have a well balanced amino acid content, limiting only in lysine. There were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in the mineral content of BFD and USD samples, except for iron, which was lower in the boiled samples. Nyika tubers have a higher calcium (1376 and 946 ug/g) and phosphorus (2250 and 2883 ug/g ) content than wild and domesticated cassava, potatoes, sweet potatoes and wild and domesticated yams. Sun-dried tubers have a higher iron content (88ug/g) than maize (20ug/g). The zinc content of tuber was higher (21and 25ug/g) than that of boiled maize flour, boiled sorghum flour, rice, cassava, and sweet potato. The predominant fatty acids in the tubers were oleic (47%), linoleic (32%), palmitic (21%) and linolenic (7%) acids. Ascorbic acid content was very low, only 0.1 and 0.003 mg/100g. Tannin content was lower (1 and 1.7 %) in the tubers than in Vulgare Pers. sorghum, DeKalb sorghum from U.S. and Kabale sorghum from Uganda. There was a significantly (P < 0.05) lower content of phytate in boiled (3.9ug/g) than in sun-dried tubers (6.0 ug/g). Phytate content of the tubers was lower than that of cooked maize flour, unrefined maize flour, cassava and sweet potato. Trypsin inhibitor activity in the tubers was reduced from 463 to 55 TIU/g tuber and chymotrypsin inhibitor activity was reduced to 50 from 267 CIU/g tuber by cooking. Nyika is a good source of iron and quality protein limiting only in lysine. Protein is comparable to staple maize and higher than root crops consumed in Malawi. It is not a good source of fat and ascorbic acid. Tannin, phytate, trypsin, and chymotrypsin inhibitor content lower than most food crops consumed in Malawi.

Streszczenie:
Background: The vast majority of infants born with congenital heart disease (CHD) reach adulthood because of the developments in cardiology in recent decades. This thesis aims to describe the psychosocial situation of child/adolescent cardiac patients and their families, investigate the situation faced by parents and siblings initially and over time, investigate the approaches paediatric cardiologists use in encountering the family, and describe the teamwork occurring in paediatric cardiology teams (PCTs) in Sweden. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework was based on a quality of life model applied to children, a stress-coping model, and a psychosocial approach including support, profession, and teamwork. Methods: The research combines quantitative data collection/analysis and qualitative research interviews/content analysis. Results: Complexity: The three grades of medical complexity differed regarding the number and severity of psychosocial symptoms, the children with the most complex CHD having the most severe symptoms. The most frequent symptoms in the whole patient group regarding various spheres were: healthcare and treatment-related needs in the external sphere, family symptoms in the interpersonal sphere, and mental/psychosomatic symptoms in the personal sphere. Coping: Being informed of a child’s/sibling’s heart disease has emotional consequences, so information, communication, and support are essential. Breaking the news of a child’s disease can be described as a turning point still significant after ten years. The professionalism of the doctor’s approach in breaking the news is crucial. Profession: Among paediatric cardiologists, how to break bad news to a family is an important concern, evident in findings regarding the significance of trust and confidence and the use of various emotional positions. Paediatric cardiologists commonly wish to be skilled at handling this situation, and attaining the needed skills calls for reflection, education, and sharing experience. Team: PCTs in Sweden aim and try to work in a structured way. In PCTs, there is a need for leadership, resource coordination, coaching, and a forum for joint reflection. Dependence on the physician on the team was identified in all PCTs. The challenge of managing increasing complexity at both the family and system levels requires interprofessional teams. Conclusions: These studies illustrate the psychosocial complexity and the need of psychosocial support. Emotional consequences, communication, information and support are essential both for the children, parents/families and for the professionals. To manage this complexity organizational alteration action plans are required. There is a need for a forum to stimulate dialogue and common reflection in the local PCT and at the regional and national centres.

Family Meetings occur frequently in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) yet little data existed to guide clinicians in the conduct of these meetings. The medical team is required to deliver complex medical information and navigate complex decision-making with a traumatised family during a meeting. The objectives of this study were to describe the content and process of 15 whanau/family meetings in the PICU, identify family meeting characteristics and patient and family attributes that influence family satisfaction and recommend guidelines for health professionals working in the PICU. The study was conducted in a PICU in a university-affiliated children’s hospital in New Zealand (NZ). The process and content of 15 family meetings were analysed using a coding framework previously developed through a qualitative study of family meetings in the adult intensive care unit (Curtis, 2002a). A questionnaire providing a quantitative assessment of family satisfaction drawn from the same study was administered to 30 family members. Demographic data for the study were collected from the patient’s hospital record and these were combined with data relating to the meeting recording and transcript to identify family meeting characteristics and attributes that might influence family satisfaction. The content and process of family meetings in the PICU were described using a framework detailing 28 codes from the six domains: introductions, informational exchange, discussions of the future, decisions, discussions about death and dying, and closings. A comparison of family meeting characteristics and patient and family attributes revealed that longer meetings (40 minutes plus) were associated with lower family satisfaction and should therefore prompt clinicians to consider whether there are unresolved conflicts, difficulties or misunderstandings between the medical team and the family. Recommendations are proposed to guide health professionals in family meetings in the PICU. This is the first study to record and code the content of family meetings in the PICU. The findings from this study will assist clinicians in their meetings with families. The description of the family meeting content will also provide a foundation for future communication training and research in the health environment.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between ex-spousal interactions following remarriage and the behavioral and emotional adjustment of stepchildren. The subjects for the study were volunteers and were recruited for the study either through The PACES Family Counseling Center at The College of William and Mary or through a networking sampling procedure. The study participants included stepchildren between the ages of 8 and 16, and their residential biological parents.;Thirty-one stepchild/biological-parent pairs participated in the study by completing a series of questionnaires relevant to ex-spousal interactions and children's adjustment. Ex-spousal interactions were assessed using The Content of Coparental Interactions scale, The Quality of Coparental Communications Scale, and The O'Leary-Porter Overt Hostility Scale. Stepchildren's adjustment was measured using The Revised Behavior Problem Checklist and The Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale. Stepchildren's perceptions of the ex-spousal relationship were assessed using The Children's Perception Questionnaire.;Measures of the content and quality of ex-spousal interactions were statistically analyzed to determine if, and to what extent, they were associated with measures of stepchildren's adjustment. Partial correlation procedures were employed to control for the influence of selected demographic variables in the relationships under investigation. Statistically significant correlations were found between ex-spousal conflict and/or hostility and the self-concept and behavioral adjustment of stepchildren. The highest correlations obtained were between stepchildren's perceptions of ex-spousal discord and stepchildren's adjustment measures.;The results of the study suggest that ex-spousal interactions are a significant factor in children's adjustment even after parental remarriage and the establishment of a stepfamily system. Findings also suggest that stepchildren's perception of ex-spousal discord may be the key determinant in the effect ex-spousal interactions have on stepchildren's self-concept and behavior. The implications of the significant findings of this study are discussed within the context of Structural Family Therapy Theory.

In critically reviewing the economic paradigm, which assumes man acts rationally in a world of perfect information, economic theory ignores the role of alternative forms of capital in acquiring power to conduct business successfully. Using Bourdieu's concepts of field, habitus and capital offered sociological insights into small family farm businesses. Bourdieu's generic forms of capital allowed for the appraisal of not only economic capital; but social, cultural and symbolic capital. A qualitative, mixed methods approach was chosen, through a series of ten ethnographic case studies conducted in Staffordshire. Bourdieu's work and qualitative methods allowed the farm to be investigated as a collective social unit. Each case study consisted of participant observation, interviews with the farmer, and where possible spouses and children. The work demonstrates that whilst policy tries to shape how agriculture is conducted, it is not necessarily creating an environment in which farmers can empower themselves, and their business operations; as powerful groups seek to retain their position in the field (dairy industry). Sufficient levels of social, cultural and symbolic capital are vital for family farm business success; defined in economic (wealth) and non-economic (personal development, job satisfaction and lifestyle) parameters. For the farming world, the work extends Bourdieu's theory proposing the need to introduce natural capital. Nature's role in farming is critical and farmers need to utilise and support natural systems. Despite farmers losing control in their field, many have behaved in enterprising ways in order to continue the family farm business. However, farmers need to increase their levels of all forms of capital in order to increase their power and position in society. Consequently, farmers must also protect their levels of capital in order to slow down further decreases in their power in the field.

Streszczenie:
Background: About half of Sweden's population is suffering from a chronic disease and most are cared for in primary healthcare. Chronical illness of one family member can affect the whole family's health. It is therefore important that the district nurse pays attention to all family members and supports them in their situation. Previous research shows that the families and patients health are positively affected if families can be involved in the care of the chronically ill family member and be supported in their role. In primary care in Sweden no research could be founded in this area. It is thus important to examine the district nurse's experiences of familyfocused work in primary care. Aim: To illuminate the district nurse's experiences of making the family involved in care of chronically ill patients in primary care. Method: A qualitative approach was used and twelve district nurses in primary care in a region in western Sweden were interviewed. A qualitive content was used for analysis. Result: The analysis resulted in four main categories: Communication is the key to participation, education is a tool to enable participation, coordination is an important part that promotes participation, there are factors that affects family-focused work; and eight subcategories. Conclusion: The district nurses found it important to work family-focused. They experienced both possibilities and hindrance with this approach. Due to the lack of structure, procedures and directives from the employer, the family- focused work approach was not visible.
