One of the most celebrated gardens in early modern Rome was built by Cardinal Federico Cesi (d. 1565) near St. Peter’s Basilica. Earlier studies of the site have concentrated on the famous sixteenth-century antiquities collection displayed in the garden. The Afterlife of the Cesi Garden: Family Identity, Politics, and Memory in Early Modern Rome shifts the scholarly focus to also examine the changing appearance, functions, and the broader social, political, and economic significance of the garden for the Cesi family and for the city of Rome over the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Through a close analysis of visual evidence, unpublished archival documents, and a plan of the garden by the architect Giovanni Battista Contini (d. 1723), Katherine M. Bentz demonstrates that the long post-Renaissance afterlife of the Cesi Garden reveals the ways in which politics shaped specific urban environments in Rome, how aristocratic Romans considered and used gardens over generations, and the vital and symbolic role that the garden played for centuries.

We define a notion of a splitting tree, by means of which we prove that every analytic countably splitting family contains a closed countably splitting family. An application of this notion solves a problem of Blass. On the other hand we show that there exists an Fσ splitting family that does not contain a closed splitting family.

Twelve clones of monkey DNA obtained by a procedure that enriches 10(3)- to 10(4)-fold for nascent sequences activated early in S phase (G. Kaufmann, M. Zannis-Hadjopoulos, and R. G. Martin, Mol. Cell. Biol. 5:721-727, 1985) have been examined. Only 2 of the 12 ors sequences (origin-enriched sequences) are unique (ors1 and ors8). Three contain the highly reiterated Alu family (ors3, ors9, and ors11). One contains the highly reiterated alpha-satellite family (ors12), but none contain the Kpn family. Those remaining contain middle repetitive sequences. Two examples of the same middle repetitive sequence were found (ors2 and ors6). Three of the middle repetitive sequences (the ors2-ors6 pair, ors5, and ors10) are moderately dispersed; one (ors4) is highly dispersed. The last, ors7, has been mapped to the bona fide replication origin of the D loop of mitochondrial DNA. Of the nine ors sequences tested, half possess snapback (intrachain reannealing) properties.

AbstractLet ℓ be a prime number. It is not known whether every finite ℓ-group of rank n≥1 can be realized as a Galois group over ${\Bbb Q}$ with no more than n ramified primes. We prove that this can be done for the (minimal) family of finite ℓ-groups which contains all the cyclic groups of ℓ-power order and is closed under direct products, (regular) wreath products and rank-preserving homomorphic images. This family contains the Sylow ℓ-subgroups of the symmetric groups and of the classical groups over finite fields of characteristic not ℓ. On the other hand, it does not contain all finite ℓ-groups.

This study provides a content analysis of television families portrayed in family-focused programs aired between 2004 and 2013. The analysis focuses on family configuration type, parent type and marital status, and the frequency and gender of children characters, as well as each program's genre, channel type, and target audience. The study uses cultivation theory as the basis of understanding and aims to anticipate television's potential effects and raise important questions that should be addressed in future studies. Results indicate that the traditional nuclear family configuration held the largest portion of the television family landscape. The study found an increase in single-parent families and a decrease in reconstituted families portrayed on television. Significantly, the content analysis revealed a new family configuration type that had not been identified in previous studies: nuclear with same-sex parents. The study found more single mothers than single fathers and discovered that single mothers had significantly fewer male children, pointing out a potential issue in terms of single-parent gender. The content analysis found more male children than female children; however, four years of data included more females than males, indicating possible movement toward equal representation of both genders. This study calls out the importance of educating young television audiences regarding the increasing complexity of the modern-day television family. The potential cultivation effect of family-related television programming could affect society's views of the importance of family—an issue that should be explored in future research. Other areas for future studies include trends related to television families with same-sex parents and extended family member dynamics as portrayed on television.

Considerable empirical evidence supports the existence of parental stereotypes. However, the content of these stereotypes is less clear (Valiquette-Tessier, Vandette, & Gosselin, 2015; Valiquette-Tessier, Gosselin, Thomassin, & Young, 2018). Therefore, this study aims to (a) explore stereotypes associated with divorced, step, single, same-sex and adoptive mothers and fathers, in comparison to the stereotypes associated to married mothers and fathers, and (b) assess if a set of independent variables predicts the ratings on the stereotypical content. The procedure employed in this study constitutes the most common strategy for the measurement of stereotypes, that is the three steps method (Bennett & Jamieson, 1999). To fulfill the objectives, one sample t tests and linear regressions were conducted. Results showed that married parents are highly regarded despite the parent gender, and that divorced parents are strongly negatively regarded again for both genders. Single, step, and lesbian/gay parents remain generally negatively stereotyped, despite some more positive views that have emerged here and there. Finally, adoptive parents are stereotyped in a manner that is very similar to married parents, and are even seen more positively on some aspects. On the other part, for both mothers and fathers, the gender and parental status all reached statistical significance in predicting stereotypic category a number of times. However, while age was the most often significant predictor within mothers' reduced models, it never appeared as a significant predictor within fathers' reduced models. Moreover, ethnicity was a significant predictor in many fathers' reduced models, but only reached statistical significance in a few of the mothers' reduced models. The number of times relationship status and sexual orientation came up as statistically significant is relatively similar within both mothers and fathers' models, as was educational attainment which never reach statistical significance in any of the reduced models.

The purpose of this study was to explore the extent that family physicians believe their patients could benefit from marriage and family therapy-related care, the extent of their experiences of collaborating with family therapists, and their interest in future collaboration with family therapists. Limitations family physicians face when providing psychosocial care as well as roadblocks they face when making mental health referrals and collaborating with family therapists were also explored. Sixty-four percent of the 240 family physicians surveyed responded to the mailed questionnaire. Descriptive statistics are provided for the quantitative analysis, while content analysis was used to evaluate the qualitative data. Quantitative results revealed that family physicians do detect psychosocial concerns in patient encounters, even when those concerns are not the presenting complaint, but face limitations and roadblocks to adequately addressing these concerns. The most common form of collaboration that the respondents expressed interest in was referring out with collaborative communication continuing with the family therapist, but other forms were also identified.

Background: Family firms have a strong impact on the world’s well-being, in terms of social stability, international wealth creation, and global development. Advisors appear essential to ensure the family firms’ prosperity and success, representing a potential source of advantage. There are several types of advisors working for family firms. Our study focuses on formal advisors (i.e. professionals, legally hired and paid by family firms), that either provide process or content advisory. Process advisors focus more on family dynamics and processes (e.g. relational and emotional aspect), while content advisors provide strategic services and specialized knowledge. Research Purpose: To understand how the approaches of advising family firms differ among formal business advisors.Research Problem: When advising family firms, two main type of issues can emerge. Soft issues regard personal and relational features, like emotions, while hard issues are emitted from the business, and are related to profitability and finance. In our critical literature review, we identify a gap in the existing knowledge regarding how advisors deal with soft issues when advising family firms. Although the unique characteristics and issues of family firms lead them to seek for specialized advice, they seem to be dissatisfied with the advisors’ ability to address soft issues. On the other side, content advisors show frustration in dealing with them. Research Questions: (1) How do content advisors perceive and address family firms’ soft issues? (2) How do process advisors perceive and address family firms’ soft issues? Method: Ontology – Relativism; Epistemology – Social constructionism; Methodology –Exploratory Qualitative Interview-based Study; Data collection – In-depth Interviews; Sampling – Two Purposive Criterion Samples of Content (i.e. accountants) and Process Advisors (i.e. family business advisors) (seven respondents each one); Data Analysis – Content Analysis (creation of a tree-diagram based on codes, sub-categories, categories, main categories)Conclusion: We develop a model describing how content and process advisors perceive and address soft issues, pointing out the identified differences in their approaches. Furthermore, our results suggest the existence of two level of soft issues, which adds new insights to the existing academic knowledge. Managerial Implications: We develop six main managerial implications for both content and process advisors, which we recommend as inputs facilitating the advisors’ work with family firms.

The field of marriage and family therapy (MFT) has enjoyed tremendous growth over the past 60 years. As the charismatic pioneers of MFT strove to gain legitimacy in the early years, the culture of MFT lacked a focus on quality empirical research needed to lend credibility to the field. In the past 20 years, a surge of efficacy and effectiveness research has pointed the field in a positive direction. Doctoral dissertations offer valuable insight into what is being learned by future researchers and suggest in what direction the field is heading. Previous articles voice concern over a gap between researchers producing the research and therapists who should be a vital consumer. A content analysis was performed on all 157 doctoral dissertations from 19 COAMFTE-accredited Ph.D. programs between the years of 2005 and 2008. The sample was gathered through the ProQuest thesis and dissertation database. Dissertations were coded according to research methodology, clinical focus, and whether they were published. Results showed that women consisted of two-thirds (n = 106) of the dissertations finished within the timeframe and that men published on average more than women. Findings also suggest a significant lack of dissertations being published (16.5%; n = 26) with downward trends from 2005 to 2008. Out of the dissertations published, however, the quality was high with a mean impact factor of .940. Trends show an increase in qualitative research and a noticeable lack of process research. Of all the dissertations produced within 2005 and 2008, almost one in five dissertations lacked explicit clinical application in the study. Ways to improve the amount of clinically relevant research are discussed. Suggestions are made as to the role of advisors in the publication process as well as to improve the quantity of dissertations published in COAMFTE-accredited doctoral programs.

The purpose of the study was to explore the leadership actions and activities that contributed to the implementation of a schoolwide family engagement initiative in a school. A qualitative content analysis of secondary data design was used to investigate the intentional actions and activities of a school leadership team during the implementation of a family engagement initiative within an elementary school. The Coherence Framework (Fullan & Quinn, 2016) provided a lens for which to investigate schoolwide change across drivers and sub-drivers. The findings of this study describe intentional leadership actions and activities when communicating with families, conducting formal assessments, and facilitating professional development. Patterns from the analysis indicate school leaders engage in intentional leadership actions and activities across all drivers and sub-drivers within the Coherence Framework (Fullan & Quinn, 2016). Family engagement practices are driven by core beliefs and consideration of the establishment of collective efficacy within the Coherence Framework may better support implementation of school change within family engagement implementation.

The leading idea of the monograph is the idea of the unity of national priorities in the field of values of family education on the territory of the Russian Federation and the place of the region in its formation. Russian Russian peasant family values formation process in the second half of the XIX — early XX century is presented: in its historical and cultural context in the aspect of correlation with the stages of development of the Russian state; in its historical and pedagogical context in the aspect of correlation with the value priorities of education in the Russian peasant family, which determined the essence and content of the family way. The grounds for the representation of the North-Western region of Russia as significant in the formation of values of family education are revealed. The social conditionality of the process of development of traditional values of upbringing in the Russian peasant family is shown, provided by the coordinated actions of social institutions significant in a certain historical period: the state, pedagogical science, the socio-pedagogical movement, religion, the peasant community. The mechanisms of their translation of the values of upbringing in the Russian peasant family are revealed. It is addressed to a wide range of readers interested in the history of their region. It can be used in the implementation of basic educational programs of primary, basic, secondary general (vocational) education as the basis of educational work within the framework of educational, extracurricular activities of students; studying courses on the theory of education in the system of professional development of teaching staff; development of legislative and regulatory acts regulating issues of marriage and family relations.

Sisu is a Finnish term which describes the inner fortitude activated in moments of hardship especially when nothing more is ‘left in the tank’, likened to the ‘second wind’ that keeps us moving forward in spite of the odds (Lahti, Embodied fortitude: An introduction to the Finnish construct of sisu. International Journal of Wellbeing, 9(1), 61–82. 2019). Sisu captures the inner strengths and capabilities these women drew upon when challenges arose which enabled them to continue to move forward. The chapter draws on the data collected from Study C and discusses how sisu provides a lens through which to understand the determined persistence of these women, as a deeply personal, collective and complex experience.

AbstractOnline learning has an increasingly important place in widening access and participation in higher education for diverse student cohorts. One cohort that has been taking up online study in increasing numbers over the past 10–15 years is that of mature-age, first-in-family students. This chapter looks at the experience of 87 first-in-family students, for whom the opportunity to enrol in online undergraduate studies through an open-entry pathway made it possible for them to embark on a university education. In-depth interviews and surveys were conducted with these students as part of a wider study into First-in-Family students described in Chap. 1 of this book (Study B). Findings include the important role that opportunity plays in providing the impetus for study, as well as the importance of support and encouragement from family, friends, colleagues and institutions in being able to continue the journey.

The Del Vecchios connect themselves to a Roman Jewish diaspora population whose origin and ritual practice is ancient; Guido identifies his patrimony with a line that includes religious leaders, bankers, and academics who rose, stumbled, and rose again.

This chapter explores which films Neil Marshall was watching while he wrote The Descent. Neil Marshall has in various interviews cited Deliverance (John Boorman, 1972), Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979), and The Shining (Stanley Kubrick, 1980) as the principal cinematic influences on The Descent, and the three offer a useful way to triangulate his film's co-ordinates. Deliverance, Alien, and The Shining are, like The Descent, about small groups isolated in hostile conditions with something unexpected and nasty. All three films play on fears of isolation and explore intra-group tensions alongside their more overt horror content; in The Shining the two are broadly indistinguishable. Beyond these thematic similarities, Marshall notes in 'The Making of The Descent' that each film relates to aspects of his in different ways: Deliverance is about an adventure trip that goes wrong, Alien is about atmosphere and menace and dark spaces, and The Shining is about someone going insane. The chapter then highlights the cave films that followed The Descent's release.

New technologies like NetTV will facilitate the distribution of multimedia educational content. In the context of the European ITEA2 Guarantee project, we consider it as an opportunity to correlate the educational content with the information received from sensors. The purpose of the educational animation is to educate the behavior. The system will offer multimedia educational content on specific behaviors: behave properly, socialize, rest frequently, check health, verify the merchandises expiration dates, get medication on time, be organized, do not forget to turn off appliances, etc. The content is also a form of communication between the children or elder and family or friends. Through animations, the family could educate and adjust behavior, show love and respect, could encourage communicating using new media channels, or could remember family moments, etc. The educational content has an emotional target. We want to capture the attention and we want the animation to be effective. In order to educate the rest frequently behavior, the system will generate several animations each with a different emotional target. The system will deliver the animations to NetTV or other devices on a regular basis. If the feedback from the sensors is positive, the system will deliver educational animations with a moderate emotional target. If the feedback is negative, such as the elder is not resting enough, the animations will have a higher emotional target. The paper will present an overview of the platform for delivering multimedia educational content in home environment, its role inside Guarantee architecture and how it could be integrated in future Ambient Intelligence solutions.

Content Addressable Networks are a family of neural networks designed for efficient implementation in optoelectronics and VLSI. Three CAN systems have been constructed for pattern classification, employing the supervised, self-organized, and tutored algorithm variations. The experimental systems use planes of parallel binary optical computations for both learning and recall. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the fault tolerance of the supervised CAN algorithms. The supervised CAN network was able to learn around optical errors resulting from noise, stuck pixels, and failing pixels, even when these errors caused imperfect application of the learning algorithm.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa), belongs to Zingiberaceae family. The rhizomes contain bioactive compounds of the curcuminoids group (natural phenols). They are used in food and pharmaceutical industry. The aim of this research was to acquire dried turmeric with high total curcumin content. In this study, optimum turmeric drying conditions and new extraction techniques were explored. Fresh turmeric samples were subjected to constant vs changing drying air temperatures and pre-treatment (blanching). Changing drying air temperature and use of non-blanched turmeric slices resulted in the highest concentration of curcumin. Ultrasonic extraction instead of soxhlet extraction improved the extraction efficiency and decreased extraction time. Keywords: Turmeric, Curcumin; Drying; Blanching; Extraction

Family businesses are founded with a vision of long-term sustainability and longevity over generations. Therefore, succession in a family business is an important prerequisite for achieving this goal, representing one of the greatest challenges for contemporary family businesses. We are now in an era in which the millennial generation, which is known for their interest in innovation and technology, is among the potential successors. However, the relationship between family business innovation as a potential motivating factor and the next generation’s intention to take over the family business has not been sufficiently investigated. This study examines the relationship between family businesses’ innovativeness and potential successors’ intention to take over the family business. On a sample of 18,000 responses from university students in the role of a potential successor to a family business, we demonstrate a positive correlation between the intention to take over a family business and the innovativeness of that business. Although the Cramér’s V coefficient indicates weak association, it is evident that the relative number of potential successors of family businesses increases with a higher rating of innovativeness. We also show that this trend has not changed over the last five years. The innovativeness of the family business plays an important role in the next generation's decision whether to continue with the business and ensure the longevity of the family business over generations. Our findings may therefore be relevant for owners of family businesses in addressing potential succession issues.

In August 2021, the Chinese three-child policy took effect, ending the former restrictive population policy of the country. Low fertility intention is one of the reasons behind the rapid aging of the society in China, thus the new policy seeks to achieve its demographic goals by encouraging childbirth. The first part of this paper presents the family-friendly and family protection measures the central government has introduced in recent years. The second part, based on local family planning regulation amendment reports and related news, introduces how local childbearing promotion initiatives complement the central measures in the first four months of the three-child policy. The analysis concludes by outlining the future of the three-child policy. The policy is unlikely to reverse fertility decline and ageing, although it can slow down its pace and help China gain time to continue the development of its social care systems. It is worthwhile for Hungary to monitor what kind of unique subsidies China introduces to promote childbirth in the future.

India's national family welfare program has two objectives—to address the needs of families, notably women and children, and to reduce population growth rates. In reality, the program has been disproportionately focused on achieving demographic targets by increasing contraceptive prevalence. In this process, women's needs have been overlooked, in terms of poor reproductive health (RH). There is a need to reorient program priorities to focus more holistically on RH needs and on woman-based services that respond to health needs in ways sensitive to the sociocultural constraints women and adolescent girls face in acquiring services and expressing health needs. This report presents a profile of substantive needs in the area of women's RH. It contains a brief overview of the demographic situation and the thrust of the program in India, points out gender disparities and constraints women face in acquiring quality health services, focuses on the RH situation and highlights the gaps between needs and available services, and sets out priorities for policy. It raises the need for greater attention to RH and services that are more focused on women, both adult and adolescent, in India, and discusses activities appropriate for further support.

This Population Council working paper assesses the effects of primary school characteristics, household characteristics, and recent household economic and demographic shocks on school dropout rates during the first eight grades in rural Punjab and North West Frontier Province, Pakistan. While grade retention has improved over the past six years, dropout rates for girls remain fairly high, particularly at the end of primary school (grade five). The results of this study show clearly the complementary nature of supply and demand factors in determining grade progression in rural Pakistan, particularly for girls. The results suggest that substantial improvement in the schooling environment in rural Pakistan is required if universal primary completion is to be achieved. These improvements alone, however, will not ensure success as long as households remain poor and continue to face substantial economic and demographic risks.

This report contains descriptions of 13 family planning (FP) projects recently implemented in Bangladesh. The results in terms of the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) are analyzed to investigate the degree to which improved FP service delivery in Bangladesh can increase contraceptive use in the present status of demand, investigate the programmatic factors most associated with increased prevalence, and make these projects more widely known. Criteria for inclusion included coverage of a geographic area where household distribution of contraceptive supplies was available, and where at least one measurement of CPR has been made through credible survey efforts since July 1988. The projects varied in design, intensity, programmatic focus, geographic area, implementing agency, and evaluating agency. All were rural or largely so. Primary conclusions are that improvements in the national program can be expected to lead to substantial increases in contraceptive prevalence; increased visitation rates, and greater efforts in basic training, density of fieldworkers, and use of NGO fieldworkers may be particularly effective in meeting unmet demand; although direct provision of services by NGOs seems most associated with high performance, the implication of this for the national program requires careful analysis.

Steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) are secondary metabolites being part of the plant defense response. The two major SGAs in cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum) are α-chaconine and α-solanine, which exhibit strong cellular lytic properties and inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity, and are poisonous at high concentrations for humans. As SGAs are not destroyed during cooking and frying commercial cultivars have been bred to contain low levels, and their content in tubers should not exceed 20 mg/100 g fresh weight. However, environmental factors can increase tuber SGA content above the safe level. The focus of the proposed research was to apply genomic approaches to identify candidate genes that control potato SGA content in order to develop tools for potato improvement by marker-assisted selection and/or transgenic approaches. To this end, the objectives of the proposal included identification of genes, metabolic intermediates and allelic variations in the potato SGAbiosynthetic pathway. The SGAs are biosynthesized by the sterol branch of the mevalonic acid/isoprenoid pathway. Transgenic potato plants that overexpress 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase 1 (HMG1) or squalene synthase 1 (SQS1), key enzymes of the mevalonic acid/isoprenoid pathway, exhibited elevated levels of solanine and chaconine as well as induced expression of genes downstream the pathway. These results suggest of coordinated regulation of isoprenoid (primary) metabolism and SGA secondary metabolism. The transgenic plants were further used to identify new SGA-related candidate genes by cDNA-AFLP approach and a novel glycosyltransferase was isolated. In addition, genes involved in phytosterol biosynthesis may have dual role and synthesize defense-related steroidal metabolites, such as SGAs, via lanosterol pathway. Potato lanosterol synthase sequence (LAS) was isolated and used to prepare transgenic plants with overexpressing and silencing constructs. Plants are currently being analyzed for SGA content. The dynamics of SGA accumulation in the various organs of a potato species with high SGA content gave insights into the general regulation of SGA abundance. Leaf SGA levels in S. chacoense were 10 to 20-fold greater than those of S. tuberosum. The leptines, SGAs with strong antifeedant properties against Colorado potato beetles, were present in all aerial tissues except for early and mid-developmental stages of above ground stolons, and accounted for the high SGA content of S. chacoense. These results indicate the presence of regulatory mechanisms in most tissues except in stolons that limit the levels of α-solanine and α-chaconine and confine leptine accumulation to the aerial tissues. The genomes of cultivated and wild potato contain a 4-member gene family coding for SQS. Three orthologs were cloned as cDNAs from S. chacoense and heterologously expressed in E. coli. Squalene accumulated in all E. coli lines transformed with each of the three gene constructs. Differential transcript abundance in various organs and amino acid sequence differences in the conserved domains of three isoenzymes indicate subfunctionalization of SQS activity and triterpene/sterol metabolism. Because S. chacoense and S. phureja differ so greatly for presence and accumulation of SGAs, we selected four candidate genes from different points along the biosynthetic pathway to determine if chcor phuspecific alleles were associated with SGA expression in a segregating interspecific diploid population. For two of the four genes (HMG2 and SGT2) F2 plants with chcalleles expressed significantly greater total SGAs compared with heterozygotes and those with phualleles. Although there are other determinants of SGA biosynthesis and composition in potato, the ability of allelic states at two genes to affect SGA levels confirms some of the above transgenic work where chcalleles at two other loci altered SGA expression in Desiree. Present results reveal new opportunities to manipulate triterpene/sterol biosynthesis in more targeted ways with the objective of altering SGA content for both human health concerns and natural pesticide content without disrupting the essential metabolism and function of the phytosterol component of the membranes and the growth regulating brassinosteroids.
