Streszczenie:
Objectives: This paper used electropalatography (EPG) to investigate the actual pronunciation when two plosives with the same articulation position appear successively. We aimed to determine the presence of the preceding consonant (C₁) in two successive consonants (VC₁C₂V) with the same articulation place. Methods: Tongue-to-palate contacts were recorded during the pronunciation of 8 words and 4 sentences containing those words by 5 normal adults and the closure duration and the maximum contact frame for utterance units (word, sentence), meanings (real word, nonword), and syllable structures (VC₁C₂V, VCV) were analyzed. Results: The closure duration in the syllable structures and the maximum contact frame in the meanings showed significant differences. The closure duration of the VC₁C₂V structure was significantly longer than that of the VCV structure in case of words; however, the difference reduced in the case of sentences. The maximum contact frame of the real words was significantly higher than that of non-words.Conclusion: Since the temporal characteristics between VCV and VC₁C₂V structure was distinguished and the tensification of C₂ indirectly showed the existence of C₁. These result support the fact that the preceding consonant is not deleted in two successive consonants with the same articulation place.

This paper explores the effects of language contact in the nominal morphology of central Sicilian dialects. In particular, this study is concerned with the contact-induced changes related to the distribution of three plural formatives that give rise to competition between different inflectional classes with respect to a number of lexemes. It is shown that sociolinguistic factors such as speaker age account for the distribution of the competing plural forms and the high degree of variation. As a consequence, a slow and gradual change is leading to the disappearance of the plural form that has no equivalent in the contact language, that is, in Italian.

Just as we see changes taking place in the healthcare system, we are also seeing changes take place within the publishing industry. Historically, access to peer-reviewed research and papers has been limited to those who pay membership fees to individual organizations or those working in academic institutions. As healthcare continues to change and universities are increasing the amount evidence-based medicine taught, a larger emphasis is placed on the scientific method and how to evaluate credible research. For those wanting to expand upon their education, access to scientific research can be difficult to obtain. Open-access journals have provided a platform in which individuals can easily stay up-to-date on information in his or her specialty.

Abstract Languages have been in contact since their existence. The Hungarian and Romanian languages have been so for at least 800 years. The present article aims at analysing the structural changes in the monosyllabic Hungarian loanwords in Romanian. After the theoretical introduction, I discuss the phonological status of the /j/ sound, which is very important in this kind of investigations. After that, I present the syllable structure types of these monosyllabic Hungarian etymons and I present, as well, the changing schemes of their structures in the borrowing. The study concludes that the most affected parts of the syllables are the nucleus and the coda.

The paper summarizes the results of recent studies concerned with English accentual patterns dynamics in polysyllabic words, based on English and French language contact. Canadian English reflects the present-day situation of language contact. Intersection of a variety of tendencies is observed which are due to accentual assimilation in lexicon of Romance origin borrowed from French. The recessive and the rhythmical are the major ones in the historical perspective. The data collected in dictionaries are further supplied with sociocultural comments based on corpus and opinion survey cognitive analyses. The presence of rhythmical stress was discovered in British, American and Canadian Englishes with the growing tendency in compound words due to disappearing of the pattern with two equal stresses. The tendency is most vivid in bilingual speakers from the Province of Quebec who accentuate word-final syllable.

The traditional hypothesis of a typological cycle from agglutination via fusion to isolation and back to agglutination, still invoked by many linguists (albeit with caveats and limitations), would imply a natural drift behind typological changes. Accordingly, such typological changes would typically result from internal developments (such as reductive sound changes), while etymological counter-currents (such as segmentable suffixes replacing earlier stem alternations) could rather be due to language contact. On the other hand, the agglutinative type seems to be stable and resistant to typological change especially in Northern Eurasia, and for the change towards a more fusional type, characteristic of some Finnic and Saami languages in the northwestern periphery of Uralic, a contact explanation might seem plausible. However, a closer scrutiny of Estonian, often mentioned as an example of typological change and characteristically impacted by Germanic, shows that in typological change, internal and external motivations intertwine and interact.

Streszczenie:
This article shows how the psycholinguistic process of language transfer accounts for the many features of the grammatical morphology of language contact varieties that differ from those of their lexifiers. These include different grammatical categories, the use of contrasting morphological processes to express grammatical distinctions, lexifier grammatical morphemes with new functions, and new grammatical morphemes not found in the lexifier. After an introductory description of the general notion of language transfer, it presents five more specific types: transfer of morphological strategies, word order and grammatical categories, as well as direct morphological transfer and functional transfer. The article then gives some possible explanations for the distribution among different types of contact varieties of two kinds of functional transfer – functionalisation and refunctionalisation – and for the distribution of particular types of grammatical morphemes – i.e. free versus bound. The examples presented come from contact languages of the Australia-Pacific region: three creoles (Australian Kriol, Hawai‘i Creole and Tayo); an expanded pidgin (Melanesian Pidgin, exemplified by Vanuatu Bislama and Papua New Guinea Tok Pisin); a restricted pidgin (Nauru Pidgin); and an indigenised variety of English (Colloquial Singapore English).

Streszczenie:
Abstract High-quality social contacts are important for older adult’s emotional well-being whereas narcissism, characterized by self-centeredness, may undermine the quality of personal relationships. Narcissism may be associated with poorer quality relationships because narcissistic adults are more self-centered in their daily social interactions. The current study examined the associations between linguistic features of conversation throughout the day and narcissism using a machine learning approach. Older adults aged 65–89 (N = 281, Mage = 74.07) wore an unobtrusive electronically activated recorder (EAR) throughout the day for 4 to 6 days. The EAR was activated 30 seconds every 7 minutes to capture conversations occurring in a natural setting. The sound files that contained participant’s speech (N = 28,243) were transcribed verbatim. We used Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) to extract linguistic features from the transcriptions (nfeature = 81; e.g., function words, affective processes). Linguistic features were analyzed using random forest algorithm which is a supervised machine learning method that can evaluate features’ performances in predicting older adult’s narcissism. The model reached an accuracy of 62% and results showed that total word count, more auxiliary verbs (e.g., will), more swear words (e.g., damn), and less assent (e.g., agree) were the most powerful predictors of narcissism. Drawing on sound files collected from real-life interactions, findings indicate higher usage of aggressive and disagreeable words among more narcissistic individuals, which probably leads to poorer quality relationships with social partners. Interventions aiming to improve contact quality and emotional well-being may consider individuals’ word use in daily interactions.

A large number of local German language communities, language islands (Sprachinseln), were founded in different parts of Russia between 1765 and the second half of the nineteenth century. The continuity of development in the German-speaking communities was sharply interrupted by the Second World War. As a result, the specific variety ofRusslanddeutsch‘Russian German’ (rg) is in the process of dying out. This study investigates a sample of current spoken German in Eastern Siberia using the digitalized Siberian German Corpus (sgc) at the University of Gothenburg. The investigation attempts to establish (i) which word order variants are realized specifically in clauses with the German discourse markernun‘well’ and its Russian counterpartnu‘well’, and (ii) what the effect of language contact could be. The results of the analysis show a large variety of word order phenomena in the examples containing Russiannu. Verb-first orders are common in the data investigated. These variants also contain subject pro-drop. Furthermore, it is shown that a high degree of language contact is involved in these word order variants with the Russiannu. Different types of borrowing (including lexical transference) are frequent features of this contact variety.

Streszczenie:
The last decade has seen increasing attention paid to questions of grammatical complexity, in particular regarding the extent to which some languages can be said to be more ‘complex’ than others, whether globally or with respect to particular subsystems. Creoles have featured prominently in these debates, with various authors arguing that they are particularly simple when set against non-creoles, with an apparent lack of overt morphology in creoles often cited as one of the ways in which their grammars are especially simplified. This paper makes two contributions to this discussion. First, it develops metrics of grammatical complexity that derive directly from a well-known model of creole development, thus providing an explicit link between the sociohistorical circumstances in which creoles formed and grammatical outcomes. Second, it applies these metrics to the newly published dataset from the Atlas of Pidgin and Creole Structures, setting this data against that from the well-known World Atlas of Language Structures, allowing for a more comprehensive and rigorous quantitative comparison of complexity in contact and non-contact languages than has previously been possible. It will be seen that there is good evidence that contact languages are simplified overall with respect to a class of complexities labelled paradigmatic here but that this general conclusion nevertheless masks significant underlying variation among them.

We study the following geometric representation problem: Given a graph whose vertices correspond to axis-aligned rectangles with fixed dimensions, arrange the rectangles without overlaps in the plane such that two rectangles touch if the graph contains an edge between them. This problem is called Contact Representation of Word Networks (Crown) since it formalizes the geometric problem behind drawing word clouds in which semantically related words are close to each other. Crown is known to be NP-hard, and there are approximation algorithms for certain graph classes for the optimization version, Max-Crown, in which realizing each desired adjacency yields a certain profit. We present the first O(1)-approximation algorithm for the general case, when the input is a complete weighted graph, and for the bipartite case. Since the subgraph of realized adjacencies is necessarily planar, we also consider several planar graph classes (namely stars, trees, outerplanar, and planar graphs), improving upon the known results. For some graph classes, we also describe improvements in the unweighted case, where each adjacency yields the same profit. Finally, we show that the problem is APX-complete on bipartite graphs of bounded maximum degree.

Streszczenie:

This dissertation is a variationist sociolinguistic analysis of the variable word order and prosody of copular constructions (Nicolás es feliz versus Feliz es Nicolás, Es Nicolás feliz, Es feliz Nicolás, ‘Nicolas is happy’) in the Spanish of first- and second-generation Spanish-English bilinguals in New York City (henceforth NYC). The data used for the study come from a spoken corpus of Spanish in NYC based on 140 sociolinguistic interviews (details of the corpus will be presented in Chapter Three). This dissertation addresses the question of whether second-generation bilinguals have a less flexible word order in Spanish as a result of their increased use of, and contact with, English, where a more fixed order prevails.

We will show that the informants in the present study, like their peers in Los Angeles and other parts of the US, exhibit a more rigid word order compared to their first-generation peers. We have established that this increase in rigidity of word order among the second-generation can be attributed in large part to their increased use of and contact with English. The studies mentioned above have interpreted their results to mean that these speakers are losing or have lost the discourse pragmatic constraints that govern word order. However, the data here show that the first- and second-generation speakers in the present study share many of the same conditioning variables and constraints for word order, although these variables appear to account for a smaller amount of variance among the second-generation. In this way, we have established that the second-generation is not losing the discourse pragmatic constraints that govern word order, but that they are differently sensitive to these constraints. In fact, we show that second-generation speakers are very capable of communicating the pragmatic functions that the first-generation speakers do using word order because they maintain the prosodic details of their first-generation counterparts. In other words, the second-generation communicates these functions in ways that are slightly different from the first-generation, relying more on prosodic resources than syntactic ones. Furthermore, the data indicate that their prosodic patterns are not modeled after the prosody of English. In general terms we show that the second-generation does not have a different grammar from their first-generation counterparts, as is claimed by other researchers. Instead we show that these speakers favor certain first-generation strategies over others.

Streszczenie:
To investigate how minority groups such as the Japanese speaking communities on the Gold Coast in Australia have developed a variety of the Japanese language, a survey was conducted with 31 first-generation Japanese immigrants. Among the unique 216 words collected, 26 new words, 45 catachrestic loanwords that bring new concepts of ideas or things into the Japanese language, 101 non-catachrestic loanwords co-existing with semiotically-matching other Japanese words, nine words with phonological modifications and 35 interjections were recorded. As a result, the most used unique words were non-catachrestic loanwords. Most words were related to their everyday lives; however, some were related to politics or of a more conceptual nature, unlike similar research conducted in Brazil before WWII. Nouns were the most popular unique words collected in terms of word classes. The names of things, shops, facilities, and occupations are often used in loanwords, as it is easier to use the same names in Japanese and English conversations. All the loanword verbs collected were formed with the suffix ‘-suru (to do)’. Some loanword adjectives were formed with the suffix ‘-na’. No ‘Taigen + -ru’ verbs or ‘loanwords + -i’ adjectives were confirmed. Among 26 new words used/developed on the Gold Coast, most were shortened nicknames of places and shops, such as ‘Hanja (Hungry Jacks)’, ‘Debijo (David Jones)’, ‘Raria (Australia)’, ‘Ōsu (Australia)’, ‘Wāsu (Woolworths)’, ‘Sushitore (Sushitrain)’, ‘Pashi (Pacific Fair)’, ‘Robitan (Robina Town Centre) and ‘Imigure (former Department of Immigration and Border Protection)’. Most of the words were clippings and compound clippings such as ‘Buri (Brisbane)’ and ‘Burobi (buro+bi, Broadbeach)’, and one loanblend ‘Japasen (for people who only date Japanese)’, one calque ‘Kokumin (National Australia Bank)’, one native creation ‘Donishī (Sydney)’, and two words ‘Ūru’ and ‘Ōru’ (both from the airport code ‘OOL’) from the Japanese tourism industry register were collected. For catachrestic loanwords, most of them were direct loans; however, some loanshifts such as ‘pikkingu (picking, meaning fruit picking)’ and ‘raundo (around, travelling around in Australia)’ were observed. For non-catachrestic loanwords, some names of places and occupations and things in their everyday lives were often used. Some words were used because they have slightly different impressions from the standard Japanese words, such as ‘yaoya’ and ‘vege shop’. For both catachrestic and non-catachrestic loanwords, some influence in shortenings from the local English slang/dialect was found as well, such as ‘Burijī (Brissie: Brisbane)’, ‘Ūrī (Woolies: Woolworths)’, ‘Bābī (Barbeque)’ and ‘mojī (mozzie: mosquito)’. Some phonological modifications influenced by English were found, such as ‘aikea’ instead of ‘ikea’ for the name of the interior shop IKEA, and ‘garāji’ instead of ‘garēji’ for garage. Some uncommon loanwords in Japan, such as ‘petorōru’, ‘petorō’, ‘petoro’, ‘petororu’, and 'petoraru’ for petrol, showed various phonological adaptations. Many loanwords for interjections were recorded, such as ‘oh my god’, ‘oh dear’, ‘oops’ and ‘awesome’. They often show code-switching behaviour for interjections with English accenting and pronunciation done unconsciously. More intentional code-switching behaviour is also observed to soften the situation, make it humorous, or dodge a straight answer. This code-switching is natural and easier to use for smooth communication in their life with two languages. Most participants had a positive attitude towards integrating English into their Japanese language. They think it is unavoidable living in an English-dominated society, and many of them speak English more often than Japanese. Although some words can only be expressed in English, this research found that people on the Gold Coast tend to integrate English into their Japanese conversations mainly for their convenience. It is not from the loss of their Japanese proficiency as their language skills are constantly updated through frequent return trips to Japan and access to online content in Japanese. It is considered embarrassing to mix languages too often in Japan, but it is very hard to avoid it in their life on the Gold Coast. However, they still try to avoid it in a formal or semiformal situation and outside their community. This research contributes new data to the field of Japanese language variation through language contact. There is no previous research conducted in this field, especially on Japanese people in Australia. It is significant to research and record the living language at the present time on the Gold Coast, Australia.

This essay will discuss and research the width and frequency of Irish loanwords in contemporary English varieties. The meanings, uses, differences, similarities and collocations of selected words will be discussed and analyzed in order to find answers to the research questions asked. The methods used are quantitative and qualitative research methods. The quantitative method will measure the frequency of the selected words in each of the selected varieties and the qualitative method will discuss the meanings and uses of the words in the different varieties. Each word has its own section which discuss meanings, developments and instances in which the words can be found in the different varieties. These sections are summarized at the end of the essay and the conclusion states that Irish loanwords in contemporary English varieties are not greatly widespread compared to the frequency of the same words in Irish English. A few of the words have been able to develop their meaning and use through time, but most instances of the words show the original meaning and use.

This thesis deals with the concept service. It is a phenomenon that has grown stronger the last decades and is today a vital tool for many companies to create market advantages. That a company manages the meeting between them and their customer in the best way possible is often a critical factor to get the customer to return to the store. Some companies are more than others dependent on a good service system and therefore are the purpose of this paper to examine whether the service expectations of two different customer groups are similar or different from each other. The customer groups that are chosen belong to a store chain in the lower price segment, H&M and one in the higher price segment, Acne. Both companies are active in the Swedish clothing industry. The query formulation that this paper aims to answer is: How do an H&M customer and an Acne customer vary in their expectations on service in a store? To answer this question a quantitative method is used, were an oral structured interview directed to the two customer groups are performed to collect data. Altogether 100 customers got interviewed, with an even division between the customer groups. In the theory chapter the reader gets to take part of a literature review and different studies that has been done on service. A recess of service as a phenomenon are presented and further recessed through a row of important parts that is the body of service, such as word of mouth, store atmospheric, moment of truth and the Gap-model that describes the gap between what the customer expects in service and what the customer are experiencing. The collected data shows that almost every respondent are a returning customer at the companies and that the customers at Acne in general are more satisfied with the store’s queuing time, help from the shop assistant, and number of fitting rooms than the customers at H&M proves to be. The collected data also shows that the customers that shop at Acne are spending more money on clothes every month than the H&M-customers do. The majority of H&M’s customers are in the intervals 0-499 SEK and 500-999 SEK each month, while the majority of the Acne-customers are shopping for 1500-1999 SEK and up.The conclusion that is presented is that the Acne-customers have higher expectations on the service provided by the company, as we can see that the H&M-customers are returning customers although if they not are satisfied with a lot at their store. A company as Acne that is in the higher price segment may also be more forced to provide a good service when the customers are paying a notable larger amount of money for their clothes. The H&M-customers seems to expect a higher service level at H&M than received but probably are these expectations not as high as the Acne-customer’s expectations.

Streszczenie:
The presence of surface texture/roughness on engineering surfaces results in contacts between surfaces being considerably more compliant than if the interfaces were smooth and flat. The inclusion of a local contact stiffness can be critical to the accurate analytical or computational modeling of mechanical contacts. We present measurements of contact stiffness for five pairs of freshly prepared and worn of steel surfaces. The wom surfaces variously contain surface glazes, oxide layers, subsurface cracks, inclusions and wear particles. Contact resonance frequencies between sample interfaces are measured at various applied pressures. With known modal masses, the contact stiffness is easily calculated and presented on a per unit area basis. For a given contact pair, the contact stiffness is nonlinear, increasing with nominal pressure and decreasing with increasing surface roughness. We compare these results with the Greenwood-Williamson (G-W) Theory of rough surface contact. The expected pressure and summit height dependencies are observed in the measured data. When there are wear particles within the contact, the stiffness is reduced when the underlying surfaces are very smooth. If the underlying surfaces are rough, the presence of wear particles have little effect on the contact stiffness.

In multifaceted and pluricultural settings, foreign language teaching is facing new challenges. This paper proposes a way to bring the concept of transcultural awareness to vocabulary teaching through the theoretical framework of prototype theory within Cognitive Semantics. Selected aspects of prototype theory are used in order to find suitable points of contact that can account for diversity in meaning. This paper argues towards an awareness of diversity in semantic meaning, using the understanding of prototype theory that categories are complex and have fuzzy boundaries. Therefore, learners can be taught a different and multifaceted understanding of word meaning on this theoretical foundation. Exploring and using prototype theory in this manner could pave the way towards teaching diversity in the foreign language classroom on a lexical level.

German higher education institutions attract students from all over the word for degree mobility, especially after the Bologna reform has led to an increase in internationally-oriented, English-taught study programmes. With such programmes, universities serve the politically intended purpose of attracting highly qualified talent in the form of international graduates that might potentially stay for the German job market. But for the transition from studies to the work market to be successful, it is essential for international students to acquire social capital in the form of contacts to people from the host country. This paper firstly presents results of a study on the situation of students who come to study in international engineering programmes at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Germany, focusing on the unsatisfactory contact situation of international and German students revealed in the study. Secondly, measures of the project ELLI2 – Excellent Teaching and Learning in Engineering Sciences – are introduced that aim at improving this situation, fascilitating contact between German and international engineering students. The set-up of a tandem-programme is presented, as well as participation structure and evaluation results of the first two runs of this programm in 2017/18. In addition, an international student council network will be introduced.

Streszczenie:
Termination of construction contracts has significant impact on the construction industry. But none of the past literature has addressed on how termination can be managed effectively specific to Sri Lankan context given the unique cultural, economic, and legal contexts of Sri Lanka. Therefore, this research aims to investigate and provide practical strategies for managing the termination of construction contracts. Initially, the literature review provided an understanding of contract termination. Subsequently, this study used qualitative approach involving case study and expert opinion. Under the case study, the documentary review was conducted that focus on fifteen terminated building projects in Sri Lanka over the past five years to understand the termination phenomenon in Sri Lankan context. Finally, an expert opinion was obtained to gain deeper understanding of the findings. The collected data was structured through manual content analysis and descriptive analysis. The study found that Western and Northern provinces of Sri Lanka have higher termination rates due to urbanisation, and economic development. Complex approval processes, and bureaucratic inefficiencies are the common reasons for contract termination in commercial and residential building projects. Public projects are more vulnerable to termination due to political considerations. Employers are more likely to terminate contracts than contractors, possibly due to financial instability and higher quality expectations. Finally, combination of mitigation strategies should be customised to minimise the risk of termination. These strategies can be implemented with modifications to fit the local context, but challenges such as lack of awareness, bureaucracy, and resistance to change may arise.

Streszczenie:
The contract for work (Locatio Conductio Operis) is the basic form (general type) of all service contracts. With these contracts, one contracting party obligates the other to provide the contracted service, while the other contracting party obligates the first to pay the contracted fee for the provided service. From the work contract, as a general type of service contract, arose the construction contract, the copyright contract, the contract for the transportation of persons, the contract for the transportation of goods and other contracts that today represent separate named contracts. For the stated reason, service contracts should primarily be viewed as work contracts. Depending on the subject or content of the service of a particular service contract, we can talk about one of the named legal-obligatory contracts. Likewise, it can be about contracts of a mixed nature, as well as about sui generis contracts. The paper points out the concept, subjects and object of the obligation of the contract for work, as well as the very meaning of the contract and its essential characteristics. It is emphasized that in the Republic of Serbia, the legal institution of the contract for work as a contract outside the employment relationship has not been adequately used. We are increasingly encountering its abuses, in order to cover up the actual employment relationship with a contract for work. Therefore, it is necessary to undertake appropriate efforts to improve positive legal regulations in order to ensure, to the greatest extent possible, the conclusion of contract for work only for flexible types of jobs and jobs that are not part of the employer's activity

Thomas, Strobel. A contrastive approach to grammatical doubts in some contemporary Germanic languages (German, Dutch, Swedish). Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M., marzec 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21248/gups.72278.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Unquestionably (or: undoubtedly), every competent speaker has already come to doubt with respect to the question of which form is correct or appropriate and should be used (in the standard language) when faced with two or more almost identical competing variants of words, word forms or sentence and phrase structure (e.g. German "Pizzas/Pizzen/Pizze" 'pizzas', Dutch "de drie mooiste/mooiste drie stranden" 'the three most beautiful/most beautiful three beaches', Swedish "större än jag/mig" 'taller than I/me'). Such linguistic uncertainties or "cases of doubt" (cf. i.a. Klein 2003, 2009, 2018; Müller & Szczepaniak 2017; Schmitt, Szczepaniak & Vieregge 2019; Stark 2019 as well as the useful collections of data of Duden vol. 9, Taaladvies.net, Språkriktighetsboken etc.) systematically occur also in native speakers and they do not necessarily coincide with the difficulties of second language learners. In present-day German, most grammatical uncertainties occur in the domains of inflection (nominal plural formation, genitive singular allomorphy of strong masc./neut. nouns, inflectional variation of weak masc. nouns, strong/weak adjectival inflection and comparison forms, strong/weak verb forms, perfect auxiliary selection) and word-formation (linking elements in compounds, separability of complex verbs). As for syntax, there are often doubts in connection with case choice (pseudo-partitive constructions, prepositional case government) and agreement (especially due to coordination or appositional structures). This contribution aims to present a contrastive approach to morphological and syntactic uncertainties in contemporary Germanic languages (mostly German, Dutch, and Swedish) in order to obtain a broader and more fine-grained typology of grammatical instabilities and their causes. As will be discussed, most doubts of competent speakers - a problem also for general linguistic theory - can be attributed to processes of language change in progress, to language or variety contact, to gaps and rule conflicts in the grammar of every language or to psycholinguistic conditions of language processing. Our main concerns will be the issues of which (kinds of) common or different critical areas there are within Germanic (and, on the other hand, in which areas there are no doubts), which of the established (cross-linguistically valid) explanatory approaches apply to which phenomena and, ultimately, the question whether the new data reveals further lines of explanation for the empirically observable (standard) variation.
