Streszczenie:
Bacteria-based self-healing concrete is an innovative concrete that contains a self-healing agent that provides the material with enhanced autonomous crack-sealing performance. A specific type of this concrete, based on a healing agent composed of bacterial spores and lactate as carbon source, has been developed and applied by the Delft University of Technology for over ten years. Under laboratory conditions it was proven that, depending on the dosage of healing agent, self-healing of cracks up to 0.8 mm widths occurs. As such the material potentially allows reduction of steel reinforcement used for crack width limitation in watertight constructions. Application of self-healing concrete would therefore not only result in a reduction of costs but also in improvement of environmental performance (lower CO2 footprint) and ease of in situ casting due to reduction of use of steel in waterproof applications. However, according to the EN 1990 Eurocode (Basis of structural design), customary application of a novel type of concrete must be preceded by full scale demonstrators proving evidence for safe and functional performance. In this contribution we portray full scale application of bacteria-based self-healing agent as developed by the Delft research group in two repair mortar- and in two concrete construction demonstrator projects. These demonstrator projects show that addition of the bacteria-based self-healing agent to the concrete mix is safe as no negative side effects on construction performance was observed. However, it also proved difficult to find evidence for increased crack-healing performance as cracking in the demonstrator constructions hardly occurred. In further full scale demonstrators we therefore plan to drastically reduce amount of crack width-restraining reinforcement to show crack-healing capacity and potential to save on use of reinforcement steel in watertight concrete constructions.

Streszczenie:
A person spends most of his life in rooms built from various building materials; therefore, the optimization of the human environment is an important and complex task that requires interdisciplinary approaches. Within the framework of the new theory of geomimetics in the building science of materials, the concepts of technogenic metasomatism, the affinity of microstructures, and the possibilities of creating composites that respond to operational loads and can self-heal defects have been created. The article aims to introduce the basic principles of the science of geomimetics in terms of the design and synthesis of building materials. The study’s novelty lies in the concept of technogenic metasomatism and the affinity of microstructures developed by the authors. Novel technologies have been proposed to produce a wide range of composite binders (including waterproof and frost-resistant gypsum binders) using novel forms of source materials with high free internal energy. The affinity microstructures for anisotropic materials have been formulated, which involves the design of multilayered composites and the repair of compounds at three levels (nano-, micro-, macro-). The proposed theory of technogenic metasomatism in the building science of materials represents an evolutionary stage for composites that are categorized by their adaptation to evolving circumstances in the operation of buildings and structures. Materials for three-dimensional additive technologies in construction are proposed, and examples of these can be found in nature. Different ways of applying our concept for the design of building materials in future works are proposed.

Streszczenie:
Healthcare constructions are public buildings that necessitate technical, healing and medical conditions, require common action from a number of disciplines and accommodate differing scales within themselves. Recently, these constructions have been a field of study whose momentum have continued to speed up for varying disciplines in terms of healing factors. This condition can be evaluated in terms of the basic requirement of “well-being” for each individual, the fact that the definition of health has become more comprehensive and the changes on spatial requirements in accord with developing technology. The definition by World Health Organization (WHO) will be distinctive for designers. WHO stated that “Health is not only protection from diseases and microbes but also a state of well-being physically, mentally and socially.” Furthermore, excitement, hope and other positive emotions that can be conveyed to human soul through design can be viewed as the basis of health philosophy constructed on the condition of “well-being” Even though the concept of health involves a comprehensive definition, its perception by users indicates change over time and it can be considered that this perception is far from a holistic approach in parallel with the definition of health. Healthcare constructions include places that have negative connotations in the conscious of the society. The design of modern healing places as livable spots, environments to where feelings of belonging can be attached and environments of relaxing and healing therapeutics has become a delayed requirement. This will only start with understanding the role of place on healing. Hospitals can be regarded as type of constructions that are convenient to healing reading. Therefore, the efforts to create theoretical background have been put forward in this study in order to evaluate the relation between healthcare constructions and perception of places to provide reading over hospitals. The study will mention hospital buildings in the historical process and changes on the healing perception of people. It is impossible to design the study independent of users in this healing reading from past to present. With the evaluation carried out in this respect, today’s spatial construction perception will be evaluated over The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia and providing recommendations on construction design is targeted. Streszczenie:
Climate change is anticipated to have a major impact on concrete structures through increasing rates of deterioration as well the impacts of extreme weather events. The deterioration can affect directly or indirectly climate change in addition to the variation in the carbon dioxide concentration, temperature and relative humidity. The deterioration that occurs from the very beginning of the service not only reduces the lifespan of the concretes but also demands more cement to maintain the durability. Meanwhile, the repair process of damaged parts is highly labor intensive and expensive. Thus, the self-healing of such damages is essential for the environmental safety and energy cost saving. The design and production of the self-healing as well as sustainable concretes are intensely researched within the construction industries. Based on these factors, this article provides the materials and methods required for a comprehensive assessment of self-healing concretes. Past developments, recent trends, environmental impacts, sustainability, merits and demerits of several methods for the production of self-healing concrete are discussed and analyzed.

Streszczenie:
A new biomimetic strategy to im prove the self-healing properties of Portland cement is presented that is based on the application of the biogenic inorganic polymer polyphosphate (polyP), which is used as a cement admixture. The data show that synthetic linear polyp, with an average chain length of 40, as well as natural long-chain polyP isolated from soil bacteria, has the ability to support self-healing of this construction material. Furthermore, polyP, used as a water-soluble Na-salt, is subject to Na+/Ca2+ exchange by the Ca2+ from the cement, resulting in the formation of a water-rich coacervate when added to the cement surface, especially to the surface of bacteria-containing cement/concrete samples. The addition of polyP in low concentrations (<1% on weight basis for the solids) not only accelerated the hardening of cement/concrete but also the healing of microcracks present in the material. The results suggest that long-chain polyP is a promising additive that increases the self-healing capacity of cement by mimicking a bacteria-mediated natural mechanism.

A particular formation can be observed in the discourse of spiritual healing and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Explanations of the effectiveness of spiritual healing by medical doctors and psychologists sometimes include ideological and non-scientific conclusions and concepts, which are similar to but also different from New Age science on healing. With discourse analysis discursive nodes and strategies are identified in international medical and psychological research journals at the boundary of CAM, traditional medicine, and psychosomatics from the last decade. The article develops the category of secularism to describe these propositional formations and contributes to the larger debate of postsecular societies. Postsecularism not only puts public religion but also secularisms back on the agenda. This particular secularism in the field of spiritual healing is based on transfers of knowledge and practices between subareas of a functionally differentiated society: esoteric and scientific cultural models shift into medicine, and continue into the area of health care and healing. The article demonstrates how this secularism gathers around key concepts such as emergence, quantum physics, and physicalism, and is engaged in a permanent boundary work between conventional and alternative medicine, which is governed by the notion of holistic healing.

Nanotechnology will serve as a suitable solution to achieve high performance in future construction. Using this new technology results in creativity and innovation in the construction industry. One of these new technologies is the smart concrete which has received much emphasis in recent years. Many research and experiments have been conducted in scientific research centers around the world in this regard. It is an undeniable fact that concrete structures are prone to cracking. Natural processes have caused cracks in the concrete through which harmful substances entered the concrete leading to steel corrosion. To tackle this issue through the conventional method of concrete restorative, materials, especially polymers which are also harmful to the environment, are used. An alternative that the scientists have achieved is to employ bacteria in concrete through which to produce self-healing concrete and also to reduce the problems regarding the maintenance of concrete for the environment. Bacteria contribute to the durability and performance of the concrete and increase the service life of the concrete.

As typified in the Christmas Truce, soldiers commiserate as they see themselves in the enemy and experience empathy. Commiseration is the first step in breaking down the rhetorical construction of enemyship that acts upon soldiers and which prevents reconciliation and healing. This essay proceeds in three steps. We will identify first the diverse forms of enemyship held by the American, by the North Vietnamese, and by the Hmong soldiers, reading political discourse, poetry, and fiction to uncover the rhetorical constructions of the enemy. We will talk about both an American account and a North Vietnamese account of commiseration, when a soldier looks at the enemy with compassion rooted in identification. Commiseration is fleeting; reconciliation and healing must follow, and so finally, we will look at some of the moments of reconciliation, after the war, in which Vietnamese, Hmong and American soldiers (and their children and grandchildren) find healing.

Purpose Several countries have carried out air quality monitoring in professional workplaces where chemicals are used. Health-care spaces have been less investigated. This paper aims to define a protocol, as developed by a research group, for inpatient rooms to understand the state of the art and to suggest design and management strategies for improving process quality. Design/methodology/approach Starting from the ISO-16000 standard and guidelines for monitoring activities, a protocol is defined for a one year investigation, with passive samplers. Through data analysis of the investigations and analysis of the cleaning and finishing products, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and maintenance activities, etc., it is possible to highlight the potential influences of chemical pollution. Findings A methodology is defined for understanding the chemical pollution and the possible factors related to construction materials, cleaning products and maintenance activities. Research limitations/implications The paper analyzes only a limited number of case studies because the monitoring activity is still in progress. Practical implications The investigation offers a starting point for a wide tool for the definition of design, maintenance and management strategies in health-care facilities. Social implications The research project, aimed at improving the knowledge of indoor air quality (IAQ) in inpatient rooms, is a starting point for a supporting tool for future regulations concerning health-care facilities. Originality/value IAQ is an issue on which many governments are focusing. Several health-care researchers have reported studies that aim at improving users’ health. Most investigations are about biological and physical risks, but chemical risks have been less studied. The paper suggests some design and management strategies for inpatient room.

Over the past years, many research projects in the field of construction have been based on the concept of intelligent materials. One example of such materials is self-healing concrete. This material has the ability to repair the damage that occurs, which in concrete materials means filling/closing the cracks formed. This paper describes autonomous concrete that heals itself thanks to modifications with mineral additives. The study used the basic method of evaluating the effectiveness of the healing process, which is visual observation of the material. For this purpose, tests were performed using optical, digital and electron microscopes. In addition to the observations, a chemical analysis of the composition was performed using the EDS detector mounted on the SEM. The findings indicate the ability of filling cracks with accumulating products of reaction with water.

In this paper, a self-healing optical voltage sensor (SOVS) based on the Pockels electro-optical effect and capacitive divider of BGO crystal is reported. A special design of automatic calibrating reference voltage source is used to solve the drift problem of measurement accuracy of an optical voltage sensor that was influenced by temperature. According to the mathematic models of capacitive divider and voltage sensors based on Pockels electro-optical effect, the real-time correction principle of sensing channel parameters is introduced, and the structure design of optical voltage sensor is given out. According to the IEC 60044-7 standard, the proposed optical voltage sensor is tested. Streszczenie:
The versatility of polymeric materials as healing agents to prevent any structure failure and their ability to restore their initial mechanical properties has attracted interest from many researchers. Various applications of the self-healing polymeric materials are explored in this paper. The mechanism of self-healing, which includes the extrinsic and intrinsic approaches for each of the applications, is examined. The extrinsic mechanism involves the introduction of external healing agents such as microcapsules and vascular networks into the system. Meanwhile, the intrinsic mechanism refers to the inherent reversibility of the molecular interaction of the polymer matrix, which is triggered by the external stimuli. Both self-healing mechanisms have shown a significant impact on the cracked properties of the damaged sites. This paper also presents the different types of self-healing polymeric materials applied in various applications, which include electronics, coating, aerospace, medicals, and construction fields. It is expected that this review gives a significantly broader idea of self-healing polymeric materials and their healing mechanisms in various types of applications.

Streszczenie:
Concrete is currently the main man-made structural building material. It takes on extreme loads, undergoes periodic processes of freezing and thawing, which affects its integrity and, as a result, the process of cracking is observed. A promising direction of development in improving the performance properties of concrete is the use of self-healing elastic concrete, which allows increasing the strength characteristics of the concrete structure and preventing corrosion of the reinforcing elements. The article discusses the technology for the production of self-healing concrete, indicates the necessary conditions for self-healing and defines the features of its application. Also, the calculation of production costs was made and the economic effect from the basic version of the production of self-healing concrete was calculated, the relationship between the service life and cost was determined using the correlation method. As a result of the work, it was confirmed that the new method of self-healing has the prospect of implementation and is more effective in places where the production of repair work, and regular inspection of the condition of structures, in practical terms, is impossible: underground construction, underwater construction, high-rise buildings, bridge-type transport structures. The use of self-healing concrete ensures the preservation of the bearing capacity of concrete and reinforced concrete structures, which significantly increases the service life without damage and equally helps to reduce additional material costs for maintaining the facility. The same research method revealed that bio-concrete with the use of Bacillus subtilis bacteria allows reducing the level of environmental pollution by minimizing hydrocarbon emissions during the preparation of the mixture.

Streszczenie:
Constructing superhydrophobic surfaces by simple and low-cost methods remains a challenge in achieving the large-scale commercial application of superhydrophobic materials. Herein, a facile two-step process is presented to produce a self-healing superhydrophobic surface on wood to improve water and mildew resistance. In this process, the natural hierarchical structure of wood is firstly modified by sanding with sandpaper to obtain an appropriate micro/nano composite structure on the surface, then a fluoroalkylsilane/silica composite suspension is cast and dried on the wood surface to produce the superhydrophobic surface. Due to the full use of the natural hierarchical structure of wood, the whole process does not need complicated equipment or complex procedures to construct the micro/nano composite structure. Moreover, only a very low content of inorganic matter is needed to achieve superhydrophobicity. Encouragingly, the as-obtained superhydrophobic surface exhibits good resistance to abrasion. The superhydrophobicity can still be maintained after 45 abrasion cycles under the pressure of 3.5 KPa and this surface can spontaneously recover its superhydrophobicity at room temperature by self-healing upon damage. Moreover, its self-healing ability can be restored by spraying or casting the fluoroalkylsilane/silica composite suspension onto this surface to replenish the depleted healing agents. When used for wood protection, this superhydrophobic surface greatly improves the water and mildew resistance of wood, thereby prolonging the service life of wood-based materials.

Streszczenie:
Self-healing of concrete is the process in which the material regenerates itself repairing inner cracks. This process can be produced by autogenous or autonomous healing. Autogenous healing is a natural process, produced by carbonation and/or continuing hydration. Autonomous healing is based on the use of specific agents to produce self-healing, which can be added directly to the concrete matrix, embedded in capsules or introduced through vascular networks. Some examples are superabsorbent polymers, crystalline admixtures, microencapsulated sodium silicate, and bacteria. This review is structured into two parts. The first part is an overview of self-healing concrete that summarises the basic concepts and the main advances produced in the last years. The second part is a critical discussion on the feasibility of self-healing concrete, its possibilities, current weaknesses, and challenges that need to be addressed in the coming years.

Streszczenie:
We have developed an intestinal wound model that includes surgical construction of an ileo-cecal patch to study the complex process of intestinal wound healing. This allows approximation of ileal mucosa to the cecal serosa and facilitates regeneration of ileal mucosa onto the serosal surface of the cecum. The regeneration of ileal mucosa can then be evaluated at different times. The wound model also allows us to determine the rate of intestinal regeneration for a known size of intestinal wound and can be compared in different situations (e.g. with and without EGF and Peyer’s patches). At the light microscopic level it appeared that epithelial cells involved in regeneration of ileal mucosa originated from the enlarged crypts adjacent to the intestinal wound and migrated in an orderly fashion onto the serosal surface of the cecum. The migrating epithelial cells later formed crypts and villi by the process of invagination and evagination respectively. There were also signs of proliferation of smooth muscles underneath the migratory epithelial cells.

Streszczenie:
Design and certification of novel self-healing aerospace structures was explored by reviewing the suitability of conventional deterministic certification approaches. A sandwich structure with a vascular network self-healing system was used as a case study. A novel probabilistic approach using a Monte Carlo method to generate an overall probability of structural failure yields notable new insights into design of self-healing systems, including a drive for a faster healing time of less than two flight hours. In the case study considered, a mature self-healing system could be expected to reduce the probability of structural failure (compared to a conventional damage-tolerant construction) by almost an order of magnitude. In a risk-based framework this could be traded against simplified maintenance activity (to save cost) and/or increased allowable stress (to allow a lighter structure). The first estimate of the increase in design allowable stresses permitted by a self-healing system is around 8 per cent, with a self-healing system much lighter than previously envisaged. It is thought these methods and conclusions could have wider application to self-healing and conventional high-performance composite structures.
