In logistics, freight can be consolidated over time (temporally) or over space (spatially). This thesis presents a simulation model to evaluate temporal and spatial consolidation rules. The model is the result of a research project to analyze freight consolidation options for a large industrial company. The research project focused on the company's freight imported from China to the US, and the model presented in the thesis is structured to represent a typical import logistics network. The results section of the thesis presents a method for evaluating consolidation rules. The results recommend temporal consolidation of two weeks at the origin port and temporal consolidation of less than one week at the factory for the company's shipments from China to the US. This consolidation policy offers total network cost savings of 24% over the base case, an immediate ship policy.

This thesis describes the design and implementation of machine learning algorithms and real-time recommendations within EWall, a software system used for individual and collaborative information management. In the EWall workspace, users collect and arrange cards, which are compact visual abstractions of information. A significant problem that often arises when humans try to collect information is information overload. Information overload refers to the state of having too much information, and it causes difficulty in discovering relevant information. When affected by information overload, the user loses focus and spends more time filtering out irrelevant information. This thesis first presents a simple solution that uses a set of algorithms that prioritize information. Based on the information the user is working with, the algorithms search for relevant information in a database by analyzing spatial, temporal, and collaborative relationships. A second, more adaptive solution uses agents that observe user behavior and learn to apply the prioritization algorithms more effectively. Adaptive agents help to prevent information overload by removing the burden of search and filter from the user, and they hasten the process of discovering interesting and relevant information.

Pełny tekst źródłaSince the nineties, the stock market environment has experienced significant changes affecting the organization and structure of these markets. This has led to strategic moves in mergers and alliances at a national as well as at an international scale. The aim of this thesis is to better understand this phenomenon and analyze its impact on the future of stock markets considered as any operational firm seeking to maximize its profits. To achieve this, and after a theoretical analysis of this phenomenon, we focused on the case of merger of the four European stock markets giving birth to Euronext. Our goal is to study the merger and its potential effect on the volatility and liquidity of these markets. The results obtained confirm the assumption that the merger is beneficial to merging markets in terms of liquidity and volatility. Note however that the expected benefits depend on the size of the securities, on the market studied, its importance and its degree of integration with other financial places before their effective consolidation

Pełny tekst źródłaThe virtualization of computing resources has given rise to cloud computing. More recently, container-based lightweight virtualization has become increasingly popular. Containers offer performance isolation comparable to that of virtual machines, but promise better resource consolidation due to their flexibility. In this thesis we highlight performance isolation losses assumed to be guaranteed to an active container. These losses occur during consolidation, i.e. when the unused memory of an inactive container is transferred to a new container that starts. However, in a non-virtualized environment, this memory consolidation scenario does not result in a drop in performance among the most active processes. We therefore propose, as a first step, to measure the memory activity of containers using state-of-the-art metrics. Then, to ensure the isolation of the most active containers during memory consolidations, we modify the behavior of the Linux kernel in order to reclaim the memory of the containers defined as being the most inactive by the metric. In a second step, we propose another method for estimating the memory activity of containers based on a global clock of memory events. This method is more reactive than the previous one because it seeks to protect containers with the most recent memory activity

Pełny tekst źródłaIn this research a coordinated experimental investigation was undertaken to examine the consolidation behavior of composites fabricated using a number of spherical and disk-shaped clay inclusions placed within an artificial granular medium (ballotini). The results of this experimental research program indicated that the volume fraction, shape, configuration and the constitutive properties of both the clay inclusions and the granular component are all important factors that could affect the mechanical response of the soil composites. A computational scheme, validated using the results of the bench-scale experiments, was used to analyze the response of an idealized composite lumpy fill subjected to self-weight stresses, surcharge and a load applied through a rigid footing. The computational results indicated that the consolidation behavior of the composite lumpy layers can be significantly influenced by the volume proportion, location and configuration of the clay inclusions interspersed within the granular fill. The incorporation of the constitutive behaviors of the soil components, used in reclamation activities, into such a computational analysis could assist engineers in designing reclaimed fills where the least ultimate settlement occurs within the shortest time.

In this research, soil consolidation is explored in a comprehensive analytical and experimental study. The pore pressure development and dissipation for clay at its liquid limit under one-dimensional compression was investigated using the mid-plane pore pressure measurements. In general, the Terzaghi’s theory of consolidation predicted the pore pressure dissipation and the percent consolidation accurately as long as the sample was in a normally loaded state. For a preconsolidated state however, the results obtained by Terzaghi theory are doubtful. Coefficient of consolidation for smaller pressures varied during consolidation, and although the soil was in a fully saturated state for relatively high pressure increments, the pore pressure developed was less than the applied pressure. Then, the effect of different pressure increment ratios on one dimensional consolidation tests has been studied. The secondary compression effects have been founded to increase as the pressure increment ratio is reduced. Consolidation of a clay layer delimited between sheets with small permeability was also investigated in this study. The consolidation theory of compressible soils usually assumes drainage-free boundaries. This change in boundary conditions at the drainage surface necessitates the use of an approximate technique for solution of the governing partial differential equation. In this study, the solution was obtained by using the Galerkin Method and compared with the “free drainage” case. As expected, the consolidation in the case of restricted drainage proceeds at a much lower rate. The compression consolidation behavior of trampled clays in a semi- saturated state was also analyzed in this research program. It is generally known that the type and energy of compaction bring about deviations in the soil structure and hence, in its engineering properties. Therefore, in the experimental phase of this study, soils were prepared by different trampling efforts and also by different compaction methods. Finally, a reasonably realistic theory of soil consolidation has been proposed and the effect of variable permeability and compressibility on the consolidation behavior was investigated followed by a mathematical treatment of the behavior. Subsequently, laboratory consolidation tests with mid-plane pore pressure measurements were conducted on different kinds of clay.

m. Unreinforced and TiC particulate reinforced specimens were produced by hot dynamic consolidation which is known as hot swaging. Powders were canned into pure aluminium tubes of about 10cm length and 2.2cm diameter. Single action and double action cold pressing were applied to some of the specimens before hot dynamic compaction and some specimens of canned loose powder were also processed. The diameters of the hot compacts were decreased in a two step process by swaging machine (rotary dynamic compaction). During the first step, after canning, compacts had been held at 480°
C for 1 hour and swaged, thus the diameter decreased from 2.2 cm to 1.97cm. Secondly, the compacts were reheated to 480º
C and held for 1 hour and further swaged to obtain a diameter decrease from 1.97cm to 1.54cm. Generally, the microstructures of the hot dynamic compacted specimens were homogeneous except the specimens produced by using -63 µ

m size powders, maximum flexural strength values obtained by three point bending test increased by addition of 10% TiC to from 152 MPa to 285 MPa at double pressed condition and from 76MPa to 190MPa at loose powder canning condition. By hardness tests, it was observed that hardness values were inversely proportional to powder size and increased from 107 BHN to 147 BHN for corresponding powder size range of +90µ
