Streszczenie:
Background The aim of the present study was to calculate a frailty index (FI) in older adults (≥50) living with HIV, search for cross-sectional associations with the FI, and investigate the association between the FI score and two-year mortality. Methods Cross-sectional study with a short-term prospective com-ponent for the determination of two-year mortality was performed. The study took place in an HIV outpatient clinic in Calgary, Canada between November 1, 2016 and December 31, 2018. Over 700 patients 50 years of age or older took part. We calculated a FI for each patient, examined associations between FI and select patient characteristics, and evaluated the association between FI value and two-year mortality. Results The mean FI was 0.303 (± 0.128). Mean FI did not differ between males and females, nor was it associated with either nadir or current CD4 cell count. It did increase with age, duration of ART, and duration of diagnosed HIV infection. Mean FI was higher among those who died compared to survivors (0.351 vs. 0.301; p=.033). ConclusionsFrailty is highly prevalent in persons living with HIV and associated with a higher mortality rate. Health-care providers should be aware of the earlier occurrence of frailty in adults living with HIV.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the feasibility of integrating the social, environmental and innovation processes within the four-perspective sustainability balanced scorecard (SBSC) model by determining the extent of linkages between and within the four SBSC perspectives. Design/methodology/approach A survey collected responses from senior management and middle management of large Australian companies. Findings The findings support several positive significant associations. Direct associations are found between value-creating processes within the internal process perspective. These results support the feasibility of integrating environmental, social and innovation-orientated value-creating process into the internal process of the four-perspective SBSC model. The results also provide evidence about the extent to which direct or indirect associations exist between the four SBSC perspectives: first, direct association of human capital (learning and growth perspective) with value-creating processes (internal processes perspective); second, direct association of value-creating (internal processes perspective) with customer value (customer perspective); and third, direct and indirect associations of value-creating (internal processes perspective) with financial performance (FP; financial perspective). Research limitations/implications Several limitations are acknowledged related to cross-sectional data, senior and middle managers’ perceptions and assumptions underpinning structural equation modelling. Practical implications The implications for practice from this study concern how organisational management should relate to their stakeholders while providing value in their FP. Social implications These associations reflect the influence of stakeholders’ recognised needs on process and product innovation. These needs highlight the benefits of focusing on future-orientated environmental budgets and ongoing employee training that lead to customer value and FP. Originality/value This is an initial in-depth study of a four-perspective SBSC model that provides an effective means of integrating social, environmental and innovation processes within the traditional four SBSC perspectives.

Ifhigh culture, asTheodorAdornoonce proposed, promises a reality that does not exist, why, at the fin de siècle, did it hold such great attraction for Central Europe's populist politicians who were most attuned to the realities of everyday life? The answer, at least for imperial Austria, is that those politicians believed high culture to possess an integrative social function, which forced them to reconcile notions of “high” culture with “mass” culture. This was particularly true in Vienna, where the city's public performance venues for art, music, stage theater, and visual art stood as monuments to the values that the liberal middle classes had enshrined in the 1867 Constitution. A literate knowledge of this cultural system—its canon of symphonic music; the literature of tragedy, drama, and farce; and classical and contemporary genres of painting—was essential for civic participation in an era of liberal political and cultural hegemony. This article examines one cultural association that attempted to exploit the interaction between German high culture and two spheres, which are commonly thought to stand at odds with elite, high culture: popular culture and mass politics. Rather than a simple, cultural divide, this relationship created a contested “terrain of political and social conflict” in the decades preceding World War I. This terrain was of enormous consequence for Viennese of every social class.

The article examines the pedagogical situation, the main content of which is communication with students who have a weak motivation to study. The problem is caused by the discrepancy between natural giftedness and the amount of work invested, which is appropriate for the development of a young musician's creative potential. The article considers elements of psychotechnology that contribute to the growth of motivation for professionally oriented educational activities. Its effective character is proved, leading to self-actualization and overcoming doubts, which is due to many factors: the achievement of like-mindedness between the student and the mentor, the establishing of new meanings of life, the determination of the value of the art of learning in building an image of the desired future, understanding of one’s way of thinking and its possible transformation. The educational significance of the association “Our Creative Workshop” and the participation of students in musical and educational concert projects is determined.

This article examines aspects of social memory in the Aurignacian mobiliary art of southwest Germany. An analytical distinction is introduced between cultural and communicative memory with different characteristics and functions in Palaeolithic social life. It is argued that the statuettes are reflections of cultural memory, but also stood in a complex and unstable relationship with the flexible conditions of everyday life. The figurative objects are not passive reproductions of collective ideas. Rather, they have to be seen as products of an active individual and intense concern with the field of meanings and associations of cultural memory, and consequently represent individual variations of a socially shared meaningful ideology

Abstract This study is an attempt to address the issue of examining the relationship between burnout and personality among translation students. Recent trends in student/academic burnout have led to a proliferation of studies which have heightened the need for the exploration of this construct that is well-grounded in personality influences. Despite increasing concern over these two concepts, no report has been found so far surveying their association within the translation discipline. To this end, 73 Iranian translation students completed a 33-item student translator burnout scale and the 44-item Big Five Inventory of Personality. This was also accomplished by building a causal structural model through which the associations among these constructs were estimated. The results demonstrated that the proposed model has a good overall fit with the empirical data. Findings further provide evidence that there are significant correlations between agreeableness, neuroticism, and burnout.

In the United States, the debate on civil associations has coincided with the revival of interest in the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville, particularly Democracy in America (1835; 1840) in which he praised the Americans' propensity to form civil and political associations. Tocqueville regarded these associations as laboratories of democracy that teach citizens the art of being free and give them the opportunity to pursue their own interests in concert with others. Tocqueville's views on political and civil associations cannot be properly understood unless we also take into account the larger intellectual and political background of his native France. The main sections of this essay examine Tocqueville's analysis of civil and political associations in America. Special attention is paid to the strong relationship between democracy and civil and political associations and the effects that they have on promoting democratic citizenship, civility, and self-government.

Evolution and spread of malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum capable of evading antimalarials are the prime concern to malaria control. The currently effective drug, artemisinin (ART), is under threat due to detection of ART-resistant P. falciparum parasites in the Southeast Asian countries. It has been shown that amino acid (AA) mutations at the P. falciparum Kelch13 (Pfk13) gene provide resistance to ART. Nigeria, a part of the Sub-Saharan Africa, is highly endemic to malaria, contributing quite significantly to malaria, and resistance to chloroquine (CQ) and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) combination drugs has already been reported. Since artemisinin combined therapy (ACT) is the first-line drug for treatment of uncomplicated malaria in Nigeria and five amino acid mutations have been validated in the Pfk13 gene alongside with candidate mutations for ART resistance, we performed molecular surveillance for mutations (following PCR and DNA sequence analyses) in this gene from two southwestern states of Nigeria. Statistical analyses of DNA sequences were also performed following different evolutionary models. None of the different validated and candidate AA mutations of Pfk13 gene conferring resistance to ART could be detected in P. falciparum sampled in the two southwestern states of Nigeria. In addition, DNA sequencing and sequence analyses indicated neither evolutionary selection pressure on the Pfk13 gene nor association of mutations in Pfk13 gene with mutations of other three genes conferring resistance to CQ and SP. Therefore, based on the monomorphism at the Pfk13 gene and nonassociation of mutations of this gene with mutations in three other drug-resistant genes in malaria parasite P. falciparum, it can be proposed that malaria public health is not under immediate threat in southwestern Nigeria concerning ART resistance.

AbstractSince their emergence from the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the 1960s, the members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago have created a distinctive multi-disciplinary performance practice centered on collective improvisation. In this article, I conceptualize Art Ensemble improvisations as networks of group interactions, and I analyze an excerpt from a 1972 Art Ensemble concert recording using a phenomenological perspective informed by my conversations with the group about the performance and by my own experience as an improvised-music practitioner. The analysis focuses on the integration of composed material into the improvisatory process, the functions of stylistic diversity and multi-instrumentalism in Art Ensemble performance practice, and the interactive roles played by Lester Bowie, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye.

The ongoing economic recession together with redirection of dwindling educational resources towards the sciences, with less and less for culture, appears to some Canadian art librarians to be marginalizing art library collections and art librarianship. In any case, the current cultural climate invites a broader definition of ‘art’ that encompasses multiculturalism. Another source of concern is the increasing emphasis in our library schools on training information generalists, although the schools are simply addressing workplace preoccupations with technical and administrative skills. It can be more satisfying to teach art librarianship to practising librarians than to students of librarianship with differing backgrounds, expectations and motivation. In Canada, there is a need for art library associations to be instruments of positive change, by offering courses and workshops, and especially by taking advantage of teleconferencing methods to extend educational programs to librarians and students across the country.

The work presented in this thesis focuses on the management of the burghers' military duties and their martial practices in city controlled shooting societies or in interurban marksmen contests in the Holy Roman Empire during the 15th and the 16th centuries. The breadth of the subject is proven by the consequent historiography which is the subject of the first part. The principles of the martial urban culture in the Empire, then the marksmen societies themselves form the second and third parts. Civic authorities financed, privileged and supervised the marksmen. Shooting contest were a major gathering occasion between cities : the last part focuses on the decision processes once a city wants to organize such contests and to welcome foreign delegates. This study describes not only a major form of premodern sport, based on martial and manly ethics, but also a neglected form of urban associations. The marksmen phenomenon is also an occasion to reveal the cultural transfers inside the imperial space and the evolution of urban hierarchies and networks, through the Reform era or the decline of the Free and Imperial Cities

This chapter looks into the ways forms of domestic music making encouraged certain modes of listening. Musical intimacy develops and is nurtured among close friends or lovers in a social space of openness and trust. Such an intimate space unfolds in the physical staging of bourgeois private settings: in the typically cozy and cushioned interior of the nineteenth century, often enhanced by dimming lights, as witnessed by documents from the Mendelssohn family, among others. Such a setting allows musicians and listeners alike to indulge freely in “true” musical values. Musicians shun outward virtuosity and listeners concentrate on the music, often developing emotions, associations, and so on in close interdependence with the music. Listening intensely to music arguably originated in such settings, and it was only later transferred to public audiences, such as in the chamber concert. Musical intimacy could also encourage confidential discussion about music, as found in Johannes Brahms’s correspondence.

This chapter comments on Article 5 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Article 5 sets out the subject-matter jurisdiction of the Court. It declares that the jurisdiction is limited to ‘the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole’. It lists the four crimes over which the Court has subject-matter jurisdiction: (i) the crime of genocide; (ii) crimes against humanity; (iii) war crimes; and (iv) the crime of aggression. The chapter argues that the function of Article 5 seems largely symbolic, a consequence of the drafting history. At its beginnings, when it was article 22 of the International Law Association 1993 draft, article 5 was described as the ‘core’ or the ‘heart’ of the Court's jurisdiction ratione materiae, providing an enumeration of crimes whose detailed description was to be left to treaties, customary law, and judicial interpretation. But the Preparatory Committee insisted upon precise definitions, and as the texts emerged — they became articles 6, 7, and 8 of the Statute — the function of article 5 became increasingly redundant.

This chapter surveys some of the intricacies of rhyme and rhyming effects in Shakespeare’s Sonnets. It addresses the sonnet as a musical, rhetorical, and logical text that occurs as a real-time sonic event. It begins with discussion of the tripartite structure and end-rhyme scheme to argue for the architectonic orderliness of the sonnet. Sonnet 18 is analysed in terms of its subtle sound effects before the chapter moves to explore the ways that rhyme and rhyming effects serve as binders to hold together individual quatrains and sonnets, and also to hold multiple sonnets in sequences. Sonnet 87’s peculiar end-rhyme effects are examined in relation to its argument. Throughout the essay attention is given to the effects of early modern pronunciation on rhyme and sound echoes. The pleasure and power of rhyme are explored via its association with memory, sound, time, concord and friendship. The chapter concludes with remarks on the extraordinary structure and rhyming effects of Sonnet 126.

Down the ages, war epidemics have decimated the fighting strength of armies, caused the suspension and cancellation of military operations, and have brought havoc to the civil populations of belligerent and non-belligerent states alike. This book examines the historical occurrence and geographical spread of infectious diseases in association with past wars. It addresses an intrinsically geographical question: how are the spatial dynamics of epidemics influenced by military operations and the directives of war? The term historical geography in the title indicates the authors' primary concern with qualitative analyses of archival source materials over a 150-year time period from 1850, and this is combined with quantitative analyses less frequently associated with historical studies.

The study of stroke and sleep is in its infancy, as exemplified by the fact that polysomnography (PSG) has only recently been used to help confirm that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a stroke risk factor. There is a strong association between stroke and sleep problems, as stroke can cause, and also may result from, some sleep disorders. Symptoms of OSA, the most frequent and dangerous sleep problem associated with stroke, often suggest other primary sleep disorders. OSA should be the first concern, and, if diagnosed, positive airway pressure (PAP) and positional therapies are first-line treatments. If OSA is ruled out, good sleep hygiene through cognitive–behavioral techniques (cognitive, sleep restriction, stimulus control, and progressive relaxation therapies) are often recommended, as stroke patients are prone to the adverse effects of medications routinely used for sleep problems.

The over-representation of children from child protection backgrounds in the youth justice system is a significant and longstanding concern. While the association between child maltreatment and youth offending is established, the pathway of child protection-involved youth to criminal justice outcomes has received little attention. This paper presents selected findings of a detailed case file audit of 300 crossover children appearing before the Victorian Children’s Court in 2016–17. Findings explore children’s exposure to maltreatment and other adversity, as well as their child protection involvement, co-occurring challenges, offending and sentencing outcomes. The risk factors for earlier and more serious offending are also examined. Results indicate that crossover children present with more serious offending profiles than other court-involved children. The findings emphasise the need to prevent, divert and respond to crossover children’s criminal justice contact.

Current regulatory programs for drug safety are not designed to identify adverse events that have a long induction time or are rare, such as most cancers. Meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials of medications can sometimes provide information on shorter-term risk of common cancer types, though large observational studies with long follow-up are needed to examine most drug–cancer associations. Over the last few decades, a number of new methods have been developed to address several types of confounding and bias of particular concern in pharmacoepidemiology, and better data sources have become available. Of the approximately twenty medications with sufficient evidence to be classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as human carcinogens, most are anti-neoplastic agents or immunosuppressants. Substantial data from studies in humans indicate that use of aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) protects against colorectal cancer and possibly a number of other common cancers.

This chapter disputes the current claim that secularism guarantees gender equality. It focuses on France and on the ways in which the word secularism (laïcité) was used polemically, in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, by anti-clericals who condemned the dangerous association of women and religion and thus denied women the political rights of citizens. In the twenty-first century, the focus remains on women, but now it is Muslim women who are thought to endanger the republic. In this context, a new version of secularism has been articulated, which extends the demand for the neutrality of the state in matters of religion to the enforcement of the neutrality of public space. The changing meanings of laïcité suggest the need always to historicize it, to analyze its polemical operations and its effects in specific historical circumstances. This demonstrates gender equality is not—and has never been—a primary concern of secularism.

Rather than one score, Since You Went Away has slightly more than two: a rejected attempt by concert composer Alexandre Tansman and another by Max Steiner that includes multiple versions of many cues. In addition to these scores, Selznick’s notes on the score are voluminous, reflecting his desire to match his two consecutive “Best Pictures” (Gone with the Wind and Rebecca) while also contributing to the war effort through patriotic filmmaking. The result is a mixed but engrossing effort, characterized by biographer David Thomson as Selznick’s most personal film. The producer’s investment is evident throughout the score, and this chapter assesses both positive and negative consequences, including a failed attempt to engage Bernard Herrmann, Alexandre Tansman’s ignominious dismissal, Steiner’s pragmatic reuse of associative themes from earlier Selznick films, and a new, music-based publicity campaign led by Ted Wick.

This chapter follows Moorcroft through the war, and examines his different strategies for survival and development in challenging conditions. He is seen to expand his commercial outlets, both at home and abroad, taking full advantage of the newly established British Industries Fair(s); his displays attracted the attention of new high-end retailers, and, very significantly, of Queen Mary. We witness, too, his resourcefulness in securing government contracts to supply inhalers and other functional objects, enabling him to minimise (though not to avoid) the depletion of his workforce. Extensive correspondence and other contemporary documents reveal the impact of rising costs, shortage of materials, increasingly slow payment of invoices, and the loss of labour through conscription or compulsory redeployment; such pressures were exacerbated, by cruel coincidence, by the death of his (one) thrower. We explore, too, the significance of Moorcroft’s commitment to handcraft against the background of the Design and Industries Association, founded in 1915 in response to a growing concern about the need for more mechanised modes of production in a post-war world. Moorcroft explored the viability of creating by hand pottery both beautiful and useful in a modern industrial world. In the course of the war, his work was commercially successful, his sensitivity to the public mood eloquently expressed in his designs, and regularly praised in reviews. He was treading his own individual path, well prepared to confront the economic and cultural turbulence of the 1920s.

AbstractIn this chapter, largely finalised before the presentation of a legislative proposal for a European Insurance Recovery and Resolution Directive, on September 2021, recovery and resolution frameworks of insurance companies and insurance groups are discussed. Currently, the insurance regulatory framework at the European level (Solvency II) does not contain a fully developed framework with respect to recovery and (orderly) resolution such as the Bank Recovery & Resolution Directive and the Single Resolution Mechanism. Recent developments at the international level on the initiative of the Financial Stability Board and International Association of Insurance Supervisors are discussed. It is the expectation that the Solvency II 2020 review will introduce minimum harmonising regulatory standards at the European level with respect to the recovery and resolution of insurers. In this chapter, the assumption is made that the legislative proposal of the European Commission will be based on the technical advice, provided by EIOPA in the context of the Solvency II 2020 review. Therefore, this chapter discusses this technical advice in some detail. Recovery and resolution frameworks, particularly ex-ante planning, requires insurance companies and insurance groups to expand their focus from the regular going concern focus to adverse circumstances, including the ability to recover and to be resolved in orderly manner. The chapter assesses the consequences this change of focus might have on the governance of insurance companies and groups.

Streszczenie:
Making information matter is a ‘spiral dance’ (Haraway, 1991: 181). It is an ongoing process involving many lives that make, break, and remake what matters in this world. As researchers, we are part of this dance. The central concern is thus no longer that information, tools, infrastructures, and our own selves matter, but how. This is why the next chapters provide analyses of four different practices that are maybe not all equally prevalent in societies today, but equally relevant. All of them are enacted in the larger arena of surveillance, capture, and control, which is where information matters centrally. The first one, association, is a defining information practice in today’s societies. Often, but not always, association is practiced in digital, information-heavy environments where algorithms and other forms of analyses are used to identify connections, relationships, and patterns. In most cases, association is used for capture and control and it has potentially become the most prevalent form of governance in densely digitized environments. That is why it is all the more important to render associative practices more accessible by tracing each step, each turn at which information comes to matter. There is awareness about associative practices and how much they influence us. Their formative powers are recognized and discomfort about being subjected to them, or participating in their making is increasingly expressed. Critical voices from mainstream public discourses include those of Eli Pariser (The Filter Bubble, 2011), Yuval Harari (Homo Deus, 2017), Shoshana Zuboff (The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, 2019), and Farhad Manjoo (journalist, The New York Times), to name a few. What mainstream discourses do not (yet) do sufficiently is to acknowledge alternative ways of making information matter – whether these are spectacular or everyday activities.

Abstract By the mid-1950s, when Seldes frequently gave guest lectures and mini-courses at colleges and universities, he was invariably identified as a (or as the) radio and television critic. That designation customarily appeared also as part of the byline in his free-lance journalism—appropriately so. Early in 1952 Seldes agreed to serve as a director of the National Association for Better Radio and Television, a non-profit corporation based in Los Angeles. That same year he produced a popular Bantam paperback titled Previews of Entertainment containing advance information about more than 700 films and television and radio shows, as well as legitimate theatre productions, as a guide for the pleasure-seeking public in the United States. Seldes hoped to achieve for show business what Duncan Hines had done for dining out. Because most people enjoyed three to four hours of leisure each day, and the options were clearly multiplying, how to choose wisely became a major concern.

Pleasures indeed that may be as non-verbal as those of enjoying wine. They principally occur in our looking at abstract art, and in our enjoyment of ‘absolute’ music; that is, music which is independent of the setting of any text. I will follow Peter Kivy in calling this ‘music alone’. For with the rise in the later eighteenth century of ‘pure’ instrumental music, art as formal expression took over from art as representation as a critical concern. Music had till then been firmly associated with text, and so the new instrumental idiom was ‘the avant garde of the age of Enlightenment’, because it did not rely on representation.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) have different pathophysiological mechanisms of occurrence and are characterized by different clinical pictures and symptomatology. In clinical practice, it often happens that LPR remains unrecognized or is defined as atypical gastroesophageal reflux, thus, it is necessary to distinguish between these two clinical entities. Laryngopharyngeal reflux refers to the return of gastric contents from the stomach through the esophagus to the larynx, pharynx, paranasal cavities, middle ear, and lower respiratory tract, and it is part of the wider extraesophageal reflux syndrome (EER). Extraesophageal symptoms are common in GERD, and studies show an increasing prevalence of LPR in patients with GERD, as well as an association of reflux disease with cough and dysphonia symptoms. The aim of the chapter is to describe differences between GER and LPR in order to facilitate the recognition and differentiation of manifest and latent symptoms, diagnosis, and choice of therapeutic approach.

The “violent felony” category was selected as the key outcome since these crimes are a major public safety concern, have a low base-rate (around 7%), and represent the most extreme forms of violence. The authors compare the performance of different algorithms on the dataset and validate using survival analysis whether the risk scores produced by these techniques are computing reasonable estimates of the true risk.

Background: HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are characterized by impairment in at least two cognitive domains with a prevalence of up to 50% in people living with HIV (PLHIV). HAND is subdivided into asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment (ANI), mild neurocognitive disorder (MND) and HIV-associated dementia (HAD). Objectives: Demonstrate the impact of HAND and possible pathogenic mechanisms by relating them to the prevalence of subtypes Design and Setting: Review of the literature. Methods: Review made from PubMed with the descriptors “neurocognitive disorder”, “HIV”, “review”. Twelve articles were selected, among systematic reviews and meta-analysis published since 2017. Results: Before Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) HAD cases had a higher prevalence, probably due to the high viral load causing intense brain inflammation. Today the percentage of HAD has decreased, but the cases of ANI and MND continue to increase. HAART increases life expectancy and reduces viral load, but it may be related to the increase in ANI / MND associated with early brain aging and mild inflammatory processes resulting from primary infection. Conclusions: HAND is a concern for its impact on the quality of life and life expectancy of PLHIV. Therefore, neuropsychological assessment is an important tool for early diagnosis and disease management. The change in prevalence of different HAND subtypes raises doubts about the pathogenesis of these conditions and further studies are needed to elucidate this issue and develop therapeutic solutions.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common, costly problem in the general population and particularly in manual workers [1–3], with as many as 3 million individuals experiencing its symptoms and signs, including pain, tingling, numbness, fatigue and weakness in the hands and fingers [4]. Treatment of CTS is estimated to cost over one billion dollars a year [5]. The most prevalent theory for the pathogenesis of CTS is compression of median nerve in the carpal tunnel [6]. Although this theory is widely accepted, the cause of the compression in the carpal tunnel is not fully understood. Epidemiological research has identified several occupational risk factors associated with the development of CTS in general industry including: force, repetition, awkward/static postures, localized mechanical compression, and vibration [7]. Several studies have found greater prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in workers with highly repetitive manual jobs [8]. Keyboarding is a highly repetitive daily task, and its association with musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity has been a public health concern since the 1980s [1]. However, there are controversial results regarding the association between computer keyboarding and CTS which indicate that we have an insufficient understanding of an association between keyboarding and upper limb neuropathy. Using ultrasonographic techniques, our laboratory was able to explore acute changes in the median nerve following a one-hour keyboarding task [9].

In regression analyses, exposure was associated with greater concern about climate change and negative perceptions of business competitiveness. Our study suggests that workers’ awareness of climate-related exposures in their local environment, along with personal exposures, is associated with increased concern about climate change and its negative impact on business competitiveness. As sustainable competitiveness needs well-informed workers, our findings suggest that policies aimed at raising awareness of climate concerns and their impact on business awareness should take into account workers’ perceptions.

This paper aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of the tool called the Graphic-semantic Expression Map in the creation of a new brand mark, with the intend of validating this new methodological approach. This tool was developed to assist the process of expressive code synthesis and boost the relationship between graphic expression and semantics in design practice. As a case study this tool was applied on the creation of the Bisar brand mark within the scope of the curriculum internship of the master’s degree in Digital Identity Design at Portalegre Polytechnic. Bisar – eco brand inspired by people -, consists of an identity focused on the reuse of industrial waste, specifically from the textile industries in Guimarães, through the donation of industrial waste by each company, allowing the creation of a brand focused on its values and objectives, emotional and social, through experiences, supporting sustainability and making a difference in the community. Bisar is a sub-brand of Guimarães municipality that emerged from a project called “From Granny to Trendy” by the “Vintage for a cause brand”, a sustainable brand that has won a series of awards and is supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which stands out for its concern at a sustainable, ecological, and environmental level and creativity. Through the application of the tool, it is intended to assess the brand's values, relating them to semantic and graphic values, aiding methodologies and instruments promoting the association between semantics and visual thinking. Visual thinking is an essential tool because it helps to clarify ideas, defines concepts, interpret the problem, and give a systemic view. In this context, concept maps are a widely used tool in design teaching to help students visualize and communicate concepts, using semantic panels, associations are made at the semantic level, which allows working the relationship between the semantic attributes and the previous experience of the receiver. The intrinsic relationship between the brand mark and what it represents can be described as a semantic differential, and, according to Formiés and Vázquez (2016), the semantic differential technique allows us to evaluate opposing adjectives, noting whether there is any relationship between elements such as the color, the set, the visual pattern and the semantic attributes that the brand intends to convey, which can also be used to determine the recognition of the graphic brand. The implementation of the new visual synthesis tool – designated Graphic-semantic Expressions Map in concrete contexts of learning in the scope of Design Education constitutes the undertaking that succeeds its conception and aims to create conditions for its scientific validation. In the end, an attempt is made to evaluate if the association of semantic elements with several communication elements promotes the convergence between the project goals and the synthesis expressive codes, while the interpretation and creation of a brand mark project.

Past research suggests that Poland and Germany differ in the inclusiveness of their “moral universe”, i.e. the breadth of the community to which people apply moral values and rules of fairness (Schwartz, 2007). It seems likely that this difference is reflected in a more or less inclusive definition of one’s ingroup. The present study investigated (1) whether there are indeed differences in ingroup inclusiveness as manifested in differential construals of the self in East and West Germany and Poland and (2) whether those differences are reflected in differences in tolerance. As expected, participants in West Germany had the most inclusive self-construal, followed by participants from East Germany and then Poland – both in terms of their absolute scores on the most inclusive level (being a member of humanity), and in terms of the relative importance of the different levels. A relationship between a more inclusive self-construal and tolerance was observed in West Germany, but not in East Germany and Poland. The results suggest that more inclusive and abstract levels of the self-construal are more closely linked to other abstract constructs such as values rather than a true reflection of people’s ingroup. In countries with a communist past where universal values or the concern for humanity at large have been used for ideological purposes, these values may have lost their original meaning and psychological significance, and are less linked to intergroup attitudes such as tolerance towards immigrants.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 13 [1] establishes rules and criteria to provide a reasonable degree of protection for life-safety and property loss concerns resulting from fire. These rules and criteria are typically established for commercial type facilities governed by the Uniform Building Code (UBC) [2] or a comparable code. In concert with this stated purpose, NFPA 13 includes provisions for protection against damage when subject to earthquakes. The effectiveness of these rules and criteria may be challenged, however, when the safety function is extended beyond life-safety and property loss to Natural Phenomena Hazards (NPH) evaluation where nuclear safety is also an important issue. This paper presents a criteria and methodology for the evaluation of fire protection piping involving grooved couplings in a Department of Energy, Performance Category 3, multi-story structure. The footprint of the structure is approximately 540 feet by 250 feet or 135,000 square feet. Grooved type couplings are used extensively in the fire protection industry and represent a non-integral type connection between adjacent piping segments, as opposed to welded connections. Due to the nonintegral type connection and the allowable axial and lateral spans permitted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 13, these type couplings are sometimes considered to be “weak links” when subjected to earthquake loadings. The paper also presents a sample walk-down screening checklist focusing on criteria compliance as well as additional potential weak links that could result in additional seismic demands on the grooved couplings and the fire protection piping system.

Background: Chronic pain has become a leading public health concern with roughly 20% of Americans currently living with chronic pain. Individuals living with chronic pain are more likely to report lower quality of life, additional comorbidity, and increased medical expenditures than individuals without pain. Many individuals have initiated cannabis use to manage their pain as an alternative to opioid use. However, studies examining associations between cannabis use and pain intensity rarely include the frequency of cannabis. Aim: Our study aim was to address this scientific gap by elucidating the frequency of cannabis use and its association with pain intensity in an adult sample from across the United States. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, we surveyed N=2,206 adults using three sampling approaches, a national panel, a Florida panel, and a community-engaged sample. Participants completed surveys including pain and substance use. Pain intensity was measured using the Pain Intensity Number Scale (PINS, 0-10 scale) by asking participants to rate their current pain and least and worst in the past 24 hours. Average Pain Intensity (API) was the mean of the aforementioned PINS scores. Frequency of cannabis use was measured by asking individuals to indicate any past 30 day use and to indicate how often they currently use cannabis: once a month, more than once a month but less than weekly, 1 to 6 days a week, or every day. Bivariate and multiple linear regressions were utilized to identify associations between pain intensity, cannabis use, and sociodemographic factors. Results: Our sample was majority female (54.1%), non-Hispanic White (63.1%), and 45.9 ± 17.60 (SD) years of age. Participants reported an API score of 1.50 ± 2.49. For the 35.3% reporting pain greater than 0, the API score was 4.26 ± 2.40. Of the responding participants (n=600), 52% reported they never used cannabis and 25% indicated current cannabis use; with 9.0% of our sample indicating use once a month, 5.7% indicating use more than once a month but less than weekly, 4.0% reporting use 1 to 6 days a week, and 6.1% reporting using every day. Sociodemographic factors including race/ethnicity, education, and employment were associated with pain intensity at the bivariate level. Substance use factors including frequency of cannabis use and alcohol use were also associated with pain intensity at the bivariate level. After controlling for sociodemographic and substance use factors, using cannabis once a month (β=1.879), more than once a month but less than weekly (β=0.981), 1 to 6 days a week (β=1.830), and every day (β=1.491) were associated with API (p<.001). Additionally, having a disability (β=1.965) was associated with API (p≤.001). Discussion: We found above average pain intensity in this sample and about 48% of respondents were using cannabis. Increased frequency of cannabis use was statistically associated with higher average pain intensity after controlling for sociodemographic and substance use factors. As individuals continue to use cannabis, researchers should continue to assess frequency of cannabis use within the context of pain.

The demand for the energy has been significantly increased over years led by the growth of global population. By the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015, countries pledged to reduce the greenhouse gas effect including gas emissions to prevent and mitigate the global warming. The emissions control from power generation has then become a serious concern for countries to achieve their target in reducing gas emissions. Besides, the emitted gas such as Nitrogen oxides (NOx) or Carbon Monoxide (CO) that are resulted from the combustion process of fossil fuels in power plants is harmful pollutants to the living organism. The presence of those gas emissions can be predicted using Predictive Emissions Monitoring System (PEMS) or Continues Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) methods. Continuous Emissions Monitoring System is a system that was designed to monitor the effluent gas streams resulted from the combustion processes. However, this empirical method still has several constraints in predicting the gas emissions where in some cases, it produces significant errors that caused by some uncontrollable aspects such as ambient temperature, pressure and humidity that can lead to miscalculation of operational risks and costs. Solving this problem, we conduct a PEMS with data-driven approach. In this study, we used the 2011-2015 open data from gas-turbine-based power plants in Turkey to train and test several supervised methods as a practical application to predict gas concentration. Predictive Emissions Monitoring System (PEMS) offers more advantages than Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) especially in economic aspects. The system will monitor and predict the actual emissions from gas-turbine-based power plants operation. The results of this study indicate that the data-driven approach produces a good RMSE value. By having the gas emissions predicted, a mitigation plan can be set and the operational costs in the following years can be optimized by the company

We assess the reliability and validity of cognitive and socioemotional skills measures and investigate the correlation between schooling, skills acquisition, and labor earnings. Our primary data from Pakistan incorporates two innovations related to measurement and sampling. With regard to measurement, we developed and implemented a battery of instruments intended to capture cognitive and socioemotional skills among young adults. With regard to sampling, we use a panel that follows respondents from their original rural locations in 2003 to their residences in 2018, a period over which 38% of respondents left their native villages. We first show that in terms of their validity and reliability, our skills measures compare favorably to previous measurement attempts in low- and middle-income countries. We then document that in our data (a) more years of schooling are correlated with higher cognitive and socioemotional skills; (b) labor earnings are correlated with cognitive and socioemotional skills as well as years of schooling and; (c) the earnings-skills correlations depend on respondents’ migration status. The magnitude of the correlations between schooling and skills on the one hand and earnings and skills on the other is consistent with a widespread concern that such skills are underproduced in the schooling system.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL)/Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) Joint Task Force on Research Data Services (RDS) formed in 2020 with a two-fold purpose: (1) to demonstrate and commit to the roles research libraries have in stewarding research data and as part of institution-wide research support services and (2) to guide the development of resources for the ARL and CARL memberships in advancing their organizations as collaborative partners with respect to research data services in the context of FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) data principles and the US National Academies’ Open Science by Design framework. Research libraries will be successful in meeting these objectives if they act collectively and are deeply engaged with disciplinary communities. The task force formed three working groups of data practitioners, representing a wealth of expertise, to research the institutional landscape and policy environment in both the US and Canada. This report of the ARL/CARL RDS task force’s working group on partnerships highlights library RDS programs’ work with partners and stakeholders. The report provides a set of tools for libraries to use when assessing their RDS partnerships, including assessing partnerships using a partnership life cycle, defining the continuum of possible partnerships, and creating a catalog. Not all partnerships will last the entirety of a librarian’s career, and having clear parameters for when to continue or sunset a partnership can reduce ambiguity and free up resources. Recognizing the continuum of possible partnerships can provide the framework by which librarians can understand the nature of each group. From cyclical to seasonal to sporadic, understanding the needs of a type of partnership can help libraries frame their understanding and meet a group where they are. Finally, creating a catalog of partnerships can help libraries see the landscape of the organization, as well as areas for growth. This approach also aligns with OCLC’s 2020 report on Social Interoperability in Research Support: Cross-Campus Partnerships and the University Research Enterprise, which highlights the necessity of building and stewarding partnerships. Developing and providing services in a decentralized organization relies on the ability to build trusted relationships. These tools will help libraries achieve sustainable growth that is in concert with their partners, generating robust, clearly aligned initiatives that benefit all parties, their campuses, and their communities.

Our overall, long-term goal is to exploit the genetic diversity present in cereal wild relatives for the development of cultivars with durable disease resistance. Our specific objectives for this proposal were to: 1) Utilize Association Genetics Resistance Gene Enrichment Sequencing (AgRenSeq) to identify and clone powdery mildew and leaf rust resistance gene complements in wild barley and 2) Conduct comparative sequence analyses of the cloned resistance genes to elucidate the basis of their specificity and evolution. The deployment of resistant cultivars is the most effective, economically efficient, and environmentally sound means of controlling plant diseases, especially in small grain cereals. The systems selected for study in this proposal are barley (Hordeum vulgare ssp. vulgare, Hvv), its wild progenitor (Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum, Hvs) and the powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei, Bgs) and leaf rust (Puccinia hordei, Ph) pathogens. We compiled a diverse panel of Hvs accessions (the Wild Barley Diversity Collection or WBDC; N = 314) from across its native range and evaluated it to 40 isolates of Bgs and 12 isolates of Ph. We obtained genomic DNA sequences enriched for Nucleotide Binding Site-Leucine Rich Repeat (NLR) type resistance genes for 203 WBDC accessions, plus cultivar Morex for which the first reference genome sequence of barley was based. We assembled the 250 bp Illumina sequencing reads into contigs using CLC assembly cell. From this effort, we successfully assembled the sequences of 201 WBDC accessions plus Morex and used NLR Parser to identify contigs containing NLR genes. AgRenSeq was then used to identify k-mers (short oligonucleotide sequences of length k) that were associated with resistance to each isolate of the two pathogens. This analysis was performed individually for all WBDC accessions and each individual pathogen race (9,898 host accession x pathogen race combinations). We visualized the results from these analyses in Manhattan plots and identified 311 and 144 peaks for powdery mildew and leaf rust resistance, respectively. The next step in the analysis was to identify the contigs associated with the peaks in the Manhattan plots. BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) searches were employed to identify closely related contigs in other WBDC accessions or in Morex. We identified two candidate R genes that were only present in resistant WBDC accessions. One of these was present in seven WBDC lines and was associated with resistance to four leaf rust isolates. BLAST analysis of this gene revealed that it was Rph15, one of the most widely effective leaf rust resistance genes reported in Hordeum. This gene was cloned and functionally validated in association with our Australian colleagues (Cheng et al., 2021). We are currently in the process of cloning six of other resistance genes: four for powdery mildew and two for leaf rust. As the contigs do not contain much of the promoter sequences, we have employed a genome walking approach to identify 2,500 bp of promoter sequence. To speed up and simplify the cloning of resistance genes from the WBDC, the PI established the International Wild Barley Sequencing Consortium (IWBSC; https://iwbsc.umn.edu/) comprised of over 60 researchers from 14 different countries and raised over $150,000 through crowdfunding to pay for 10X depth sequence coverage. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) of whole genome sequencing (WGS) data identified extremely strong and clear signals of association for several resistance genes which will facilitate gene cloning in concert with a wild barley pan-genome currently under construction. The cloning of multiple resistance gene can facilitate the development of durably resistant cultivars by inserting, through transgenesis, cassettes of multiple resistance genes.

Streszczenie:
For meat and meat products, secondary processes are those that relate to the downstream of the primary chilling of carcasses. Secondary processes include maturation chilling, deboning, portioning, mincing and other operations such as thermal processing (cooking) that create fresh meat, meat preparations and ready-to-eat meat products. This review systematically identified and summarised information relating to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) during the manufacture of secondary processed meatand meat products (SPMMP). Systematic searching of eight literature databases was undertaken and the resultantpapers were appraised for relevance to AMR and SPMMP. Consideration was made that the appraisal scores, undertaken by different reviewers, were consistent. Appraisal reduced the 11,000 initially identified documents to 74, which indicated that literature relating to AMR and SPMMP was not plentiful. A wide range of laboratory methods and breakpoint values (i.e. the concentration of antimicrobial used to assess sensitivity, tolerance or resistance) were used for the isolation of AMR bacteria. The identified papers provided evidence that AMR bacteria could be routinely isolated from SPMMP. There was no evidence that either confirmed or refuted that genetic materials capable of increasing AMR in non-AMR bacteria were present unprotected (i.e. outside of a cell or a capsid) in SPMMP. Statistical analyses were not straightforward because different authors used different laboratory methodologies. However, analyses using antibiotic organised into broadly-related groups indicated that Enterobacteriaceaeresistant to third generation cephalosporins might be an area of upcoming concern in SPMMP. The effective treatment of patients infected with Enterobacteriaceaeresistant to cephalosporins are a known clinical issue. No AMR associations with geography were observed and most of the publications identified tended to be from Europe and the far east.AMR Listeria monocytogenes and lactic acid bacteria could be tolerant to cleaning and disinfection in secondary processing environments. The basis of the tolerance could be genetic (e.g. efflux pumps) or environmental (e.g. biofilm growth). Persistent, plant resident, AMR L. monocytogenes were shown by one study to be the source of final product contamination. 4 AMR genes can be present in bacterial cultures used for the manufacture of fermented SPMMP. Furthermore, there was broad evidence that AMR loci could be transferred during meat fermentation, with refrigeration temperatures curtailing transfer rates. Given the potential for AMR transfer, it may be prudent to advise food business operators (FBOs) to use fermentation starter cultures that are AMR-free or not contained within easily mobilisable genetic elements. Thermal processing was seen to be the only secondary processing stage that served as a critical control point for numbers of AMR bacteria. There were significant linkages between some AMR genes in Salmonella. Quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) resistance genes were associated with copper, tetracycline and sulphonamide resistance by virtue of co-location on the same plasmid. No evidence was found that either supported or refuted that there was any association between AMR genes and genes that encoded an altered stress response or enhanced the survival of AMR bacteria exposed to harmful environmental conditions.

This case study is one of ten international studies developed by the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS), in association with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), for the cities of Anyang, Medellin, Namyangju, Orlando, Pangyo, Rio de Janeiro, Santander, Singapore, Songdo, and Tel Aviv. At the IDB, the Competitiveness and Innovation Division (CTI), the Fiscal and Municipal Management Division (FMM), and the Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative (ESCI) coordinated the study. This project was part of technical cooperation ME-T1254, financed by the Knowledge Partnership Korean Fund for Technology and Innovation of the Republic of Korea. At KRIHS, the National Infrastructure Research Division coordinated the project and the Global Development Partnership Center provided the funding. Pangyo is a new city built from 2003 onwards near Seoul with a vision to become the Silicon Valley of Korea. Approximately 75 million USD of the development gain was allocated to smart city implementation, which took place in one shot within 3-4 years along with the city construction. Pangyo classifies its services into smart portal, facility management, security, disaster, and environment. Interesting aspects of Pangyo are the use of smart kiosk media boards for information provision and real-time management of street lights and waterworks. Key advantage of Pangyo is the low concern for investment overlap from simultaneous development of new city and smart city system, which also enabled high degree of integration of various functions in a spacious smart city operation center as well as utilization of fiber-optic network. Pangyo is currently making various attempts to generate revenue to cover maintenance cost through attracting advertisement on media boards and kiosks, and providing education contents to citizens at low charge.

Phytophagous insects respond to chemicals from their host plants in a number of ways, including orientation or attraction in response to volatiles produced by plants. Orientation to odors from host plants may occur in order to locate food, mates, or oviposition sites. A detailed understanding of these behaviors are the chemical stimuli evoking them may provide useful means for attracting and trapping insect pests of crop plants. Heliothine moths (Helicoverpa and Heliothis herein) include a number of major pests of cultivated crop plants throughout the world. In North America, these include Heliothis virescens and Helicoverpa zea. In much of Eurasia (including Israel) Australia, and Africa, these include Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa peltigera. These 4 species of concern all are attracted to odorants from host plants (Tingle and Mitchell 2992, Mitchell et al 1991, 1992 BARD feasibility study report). Host plant chemicals also play a role in the sexual behavior of Helicoverpa species. Synthesis and possibly release of sex pheromone in H. zea and H. phloxiphaga is stimulated by kairomones from hosts plants (Raina 1988, 1992). Pheromona scent marking on host plants also occurs in H. virescens and H. zea. Studies of several other insects, including the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni, have a variety of other behaviors may occur in association with host plants, including the use of plants as sexual rendesvous sites and of direct involvement of plant chemicals in sexual behavior. Some pest species of moths also may use host plants as adult food sources. These studies were undertaken to develop a more thorough understanding of how Heliothis/Helicoverpa moths use host plant odorants to locate and select foods, mates, and oviposition sites. We used Heliothis virescens and Helicoverpa zea in Florida, and Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa peltigera in Israel as objects of study because of their pest status. It is hoped that such an understanding will provide direction for work to discover and develop novel means to control these pests through behavioral manipulation. The specific objectives of the proposal were to 1) identify host odor affects on known Heliothine sexual behavior, 2) identify novel sexual behavior that is how dependent, 3) isolate and characterize host kairomones important to pest Heliothine host and mate-location behavior, and 4) investigate female attraction to males.

The emergence of food-borne illness outbreaks linked to the contamination of fruits and vegetables is a great concern in industrialized countries. The current lack of control measures and effective sanitization methods prompt the need for new strategies to reduce contamination of produce. Our ability to assess the risk associated with produce contamination and to devise innovative control strategies depends on the identification of critical determinants that affect the growth and the persistence of human pathogens on plants. Salmonella enterica, a common causal agent of illness linked to produce, has the ability to colonize and persist on plants. Thus, our main objective was to identify plant-inducible genes that have a role in the growth and/or persistence of S. enterica on postharvest lettuce. Our findings suggest that in-vitro biofilm formation tests may provide a suitable model to predict the initial attachment of Salmonella to cut-romaine lettuce leaves and confirm that Salmonella could persist on lettuce during shelf-life storage. Importantly, we found that Salmonella association with lettuce increases its acid-tolerance, a trait which might be correlated with an enhanced ability of the pathogen to pass through the acidic barrier of the stomach. We have demonstrated that Salmonella can internalize leaves of iceberg lettuce through open stomata. We found for the first time that internalization is an active bacterial process mediated by chemotaxis and motility toward nutrient produced in the leaf by photosynthesis. These findings may provide a partial explanation for the failure of sanitizers to efficiently eradicate foodborne pathogens in leafy greens and may point to a novel mechanism utilized by foodborne and perhaps plant pathogens to colonize leaves. Using resolvase in vivo expression technology (RIVET) we have managed to identify multiple Salmonella genes, some of which with no assigned function, which are involved in attachment to and persistence of Salmonella on lettuce leaves. The precise function of these genes in Salmonella-leaf interactions is yet to be elucidated. Taken together, our findings have advanced the understanding of how Salmonella persist in the plant environment, as well as the potential consequences upon ingestion by human. The emerging knowledge opens new research directions which should ultimately be useful in developing new strategies and approaches to reduce leaf contamination and enhance the safety of fresh produce.

Streszczenie:
With the global increase in the use of traditional and complementary remedies for the prevention and treatment of illness, the quality and safety of these medicines have become a significant concern for all regulatory authorities. Herbal medicines are the most commonly used form of traditional and complementary medicines in the world and the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines, like conventional medicines, largely depends on their quality from planting to harvesting, preprocessing and final processing. Due to the inherent complexity of herbal medicines, often containing an array of active compounds, the primary processing of herbal medicines has a direct influence on their quality. Quality concerns are the reason why the medicines regulatory agencies insist that manufacturers of medicines strictly follow Good Manufacturing Practices since it is an essential tool to prevent instances of contamination, mix-ups, deviations, failures and errors. However, a strict application of GMP requirements is expensive and would drive the prices of the manufactured products up. As a result, a maturity level grading of facilities is proposed as a way of justifying the costs incurred for manufacturers desiring to reach a broader market and investing in continuous improvement. 36 Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspection reports of local herbal manufacturers conducted by National Drug Authority were analyzed to establish the type and extent of deficiencies to GMP requirements for local herbal manufacturers in Uganda. The different GMP chapters and related sub-parameters constituted the variables used for the analysis of conformity to requirements. The primary outcome variable was the conclusion regarding compliance or noncompliance of the inspected local herbal manufacturing facility. GMP parameters that were frequently defaulted by local herbal manufacturers and the corresponding frequencies were identified. The Pearson Chi-square test was applied independently on each category to find the association that existed between conformity and the questions in each category. Only 22% (8) of the 30 inspected facilities were found to comply with GMP requirements, as per National Drug Authority (NDA) guidelines; while the majority of the facilities, 28 (78%), were found not to comply. Of the facilities inspected, 25 were undergoing GMP inspection for the first time. A total of 1,236 deficiency observations were made in the 36 inspection reports reviewed for the study. The mean for all deficiencies was 34.3, and the standard deviation was 15.829. 91.5% of the facilities did not have mechanisms for a record of market complaints; 80.9% did not meet documentation requirements; 78.9% did not have quality control measures in place, and 65.7% did not meet stores requirements. By encouraging a culture of self/voluntary improvement through the introduction of listing of manufacturers based on a maturity level grading, the National Drug Authority will improve the Herbal Medicines sector as per the mandate of improving the herbal medicine industry. Also, increased sensitization of all relevant stakeholders regarding the requirements for GMP should be intensified.

Streszczenie:
Hepatitis E is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV). HEV infection usually produces a mild disease, hepatitis E. However, disease symptoms can vary from no apparent symptoms to liver failure. There are 4 main types (genotypes) of the virus that cause concern in humans. Genotypes 1 and 2 infections are mainly restricted to humans but 3 and 4 can be identified in numerous other animal species including pigs. Transmission routes of HEV genotypes 3 and 4 have been identified to include the consumption of food products derived from infected animals and shellfish, and via transfusion of infected blood products. Hepatitis E infection is still an emerging issue in the UK and there is evidence to suggest an association of this virus with undercooked pork and pork products. Currently, there is no standardized method for evaluating the stability of HEV that may be present in food during cooking processes. There is also lack of a suitable method that can detect only infectious HEV. The proposed project aimed to address a key gap in resources for methodology related to the detection of HEV in pork and pork products. Currently the lack of a standardised method for the detection of HEV has resulted in individual laboratories either utilising their own methods or adapting methods from previously published work. This leads to a high degree of variability between the interpretation of results and does nothing to progress or provide benefit to the food industry. By interrogating the existing published methods, the project sought to refine and optimise elements of existing protocols in order to enhance the performance characteristics of the method and to simplify the methodology wherever possible. The aim was to produce a validated method which is both robust and repeatable which can be easily integrated into food laboratories capable of performing virus related work. Overall, the final method chosen was devoid of hazardous reagents and utilised easily accessible equipment. To verify the robustness of the method, an international collaborative trial was performed, with 4 UK and 3 European participant laboratories. The participating laboratories conducted analyses of pork liver samples artificially contaminated with various levels of HEV (including uncontaminated samples). The trial showed that the HEV DETECT method was just as reproducible between laboratories as it was repeatable within a laboratory. It is envisaged that the developed system will be put forward as a suitable candidate for ISO certification as a standard method. The establishment of these methods in UK laboratories could result in the availability of independent testing services for both domestic and imported pork /pork-based products. The availability of this method is in essence innovation. This work is essential to industry to help support further research to ensure that public health safety and confidence in pork and other “HEV risk” food products is maintained and improved.

Streszczenie:
The Changes in Nature Visitation and the Potential of Mobile Big Data for Visitor Monitoring workshop was held in Helsinki on 28.9.2023. We organized the workshop as part of the five-year MOBICON research project (Mobile Big Data for Understanding People in Nature - Detecting short- and long-term changes and their implications for biodiversity conservation) funded by Kone Foundation. The aim of the workshop was to collect expert opinions related to the changes in the recreational use of nature, the monitoring needs related to the changing visitations, and to discuss the possibilities of various new data sources to meet managerial information needs. Eight experts from different organisations (Metsähallitus, City of Helsinki, Uusimaa Recreation Area Association Uuvi and Suomen Latu r.y.) participated in the event. Prior to the workshop, the participants had answered a survey about their experiences and information needs related to the changing visitations. The discussion progressed from the results of the survey to more in-depth discussions. Below we summarize the key results from the discussions. The recreational use of nature was seen to be changing. Recreational use is increasing and its temporal rhythms are changing. At the same time, the visitor base becomes more diverse because of the general diversification of society and the fact that new user-groups have started to explore nature. Activities and ways of being in nature are also diversifying. Approaching the changes through four megatrends (social, environmental, political and technological changes). The social and environmental drivers of change were seen as the most important. social changes were identified to be related to the ageing of the population and the diversification of nature visitors. Climate change, as an environmental factor, was identified as the most important driver of change, impacting both nature but also human behaviour. Among the political drivers of change, particularly the increasing polarisation of society emerged in the discussion. In addition, political decisions relating to everyone's rights, biodiversity protection and resources directed for the management of recreational areas were seen as important. Technological changes were identified as important and this change taking place as part of the broader technologization of society. On the one hand, this general technologization increases the opportunities for access to and sharing of information. On the other hand, the increased ‘measurement culture’ also affects the amounts of recreational use, as people are aiming to reach their kilometer or step targets. The information needs of organisations were recognized to include 1) planning of management actions, 2) justifying one's own activities for securing funding and 3) informing visitors. Information is needed on visitor flows and their spatial and temporal distribution. In addition, information about the visitors themselves was considered necessary, especially as the visitor base is becoming more diverse. The workshop participants also expressed concern about those who do not visit recreational areas: how get more information about them and the factors that limit nature visits. Collecting visitor data was seen as expensive and time-consuming, which is why finding new kinds of data sources has potential. Mobile data was evaluated as an interesting source of information and its various aspects were discussed through a SWOT analysis. However, it was clear that in operational use, information must be reliable and easily accessible and some doubts were raised on the potential of mobile big data from this aspect. The event was organised by Aina Brias Guinart, Matti Hästbacka, Tatu Leppämäki, Jussi Torkko and Tuuli Toivonen. Johanna Eklund participated in the workshop from maternity leave.
