SUMMARYIn the context of computer-integrated manufacture (CIM), the paper describes the need for flexible “intelligent” machinery and the need for integrated and distributed software. Methodologies in obtaining appropriate solutions are discussed and related to two major SERC sponsored research programmes at Loughborough University, which concern (i) the design of a family of mechanical and control system modules to allow robots to be configured with user defined kinematic and dynamic properties, and (ii) the design of distributed hardware and software structures, based on internationally accepted communication protocols, to allow FAS's to be produced.In batch manufacture today's increased demand for product variety, requiring reduced lead times and work in progress, the need arises for computer-integrated manufacture (CIM). Similarly, in many conventional continuous flow manufacturing processes dramatic improvements in plant efficiency can be achieved by linking shop floor computer systems with computers performing management and design functions.Considerable research and development work has centred on flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs)3−1 which conventionally relate to metal cutting environments. Similarly the labour intensive nature of assembly operations has led to considerable interest in the design of flexible assembly systems.3.4 The principles embodied in FMS and FAS are translatable, being applicable to most manufacturing environments.To achieve flexible integrated manufacturing two major requirements can be identified, viz. (i) the need for flexible “intelligent” machinery, and (ii) the need for integrated but distributed software systems. This paper will consider future trends in (i) and (ii).

Modern scientific and technological development is connected with the development and integration of modern monitoring technologies and computer integrated manufacturing systems (CIM) into management processes. Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is an approach to management in various areas of production and activity, where computers and automated systems play a central role in all aspects of safety monitoring, including environmental safety of territories. Considered modern technologies and CIM provide an opportunity to integrate the management of all stages of environmental monitoring into one process, ensuring their rational functioning in one system. Importance and prospects of integration of modern monitoring technologies into automated systems of environmental safety management through the use of computer integrated manufacturing systems (CIM) contribute to creation of sustainability of development of territories in accordance with modern requirements of environmental safety. Transition to management of monitoring of environmental safety of territories with the help of modern observation means and computer integrated manufacturing systems (CIM) reduces the terms of realization of monitoring stages, automation of control that provides positive economic effect. A promising direction in the field of informatization of processes of observation of environmental safety and monitoring of its changes is the creation of new opportunities of modern observation technologies and computer integrated manufacturing systems (CIM) allowing to increase the functionality and their automation, including with the change and expansion of tools, observation, their spatial configuration in the real mode of modeling changes in the environmental situation.

Computer Integrated Manufacture (CIM) is concerned with providing computer assistance, control and high level integrated automation at all levels of the manufacturing industries, including the business data processing system, CAD, CAM and FMS, by linking islands of automation into a distributed processing system. The technology applied in CIM makes intensive use of distributed computer networks and data processing techniques, Artificial Intelligence and Database Management Systems. FMS in this aspect plays the role of a highly efficient and “ready to react to random requests” manufacturing facility (e.g. machining, test, assembly, welding, etc.) in this “total concept”. A membrane structure is a space structure composed of a membrane material (fabric or film), cables, and steel frames, among others. It reduces the environmental load for transporting materials and constructions; for instance, compared with conventional roofs that have steel panels or tiles, the membrane structure of a roof is lightweight. Computer analysis and three-dimensional (3D) models are required for determining the stable shape of such tensile structures. It is useful to use computer-integrated systems for the design and manufacturing process because these 3D models consist of numerical data. In this study, we developed a system program based on artificial intelligence methods, with a support vector machine instead of human judgment for the membrane structure estimation and for a probabilistic optimization to predict the differences caused by production loss etc. and compare the results after actual production. And we got close predicted results to the person.
