Streszczenie:
This thesis proposes that feminist social and political theory adopt the epistemology inherent in Jurgen Habermas's communicative ethics in order to more coherently work toward the goal of freeing individuals from social oppression. This thesis first examines the fundamental differences that exist between the particular claims for knowledge made by the three major schools of feminist theory; the empirical feminists, the standpoint feminists, and those allied with postmodernism. After illuminating the specifics of these feminist claims, the conception of knowledge central to Habermas's thought is explored and shown to be split into three distinct realms; the objective, the social, and the subjective. It is shown that the three realms of Habermas's knowledge account for the underlying claims of the differing groups of feminist theory, and provide a basis for reconciling the differences between them. Habermas's objective realm of knowledge corresponds to the concerns of empirically oriented feminists. A need for an accurate description of the events and conditions of the actual world is shared by both, as is a trust in the human potential for grasping these objects and events accurately. Standpoint feminism's concern for interpersonal relations, accounting for the context of an individual's or group's existence, is reflected in the type of knowledge that Habermas considers social in nature. Habermas's conception of our capacity for social knowledge, which guides our actions with other human beings, is shown to be dependent upon both social existence and communication. Finally, Habermas acknowledges the human potential for critical knowledge to explain the individual's ability to differentiate herself from the group, a task which a postmodern feminism demands to avoid essentializing any aspect of women. If feminist theory is able to move beyond the entrenched differences that it now finds itself locked within, perhaps then it will be able to continue with the project shared with Habermas, that of providing a meaningful emancipation for human beings.

Streszczenie:
This thesis investigates how rural communities negotiate the development of renewable energy projects. Public and local community acceptance of these new technologies in rural areas around the world is uncertain and spatially uneven and represents an area of emerging public policy interest and one where scholarly theory is rapidly developing. This thesis uses Habermasian concepts of public sphere, communicative action and deliberative democracy, as well as the concept of “wicked problems” from the planning studies literature combined with geographical concepts of place and scale to advance theoretical and empirical understanding of how public opinion on renewable energy technologies is formed in place. It documents energy use patterns, attitudes and sociopolitical relations at a time when considerable state and business efforts are directed at the construction of solar, wind, biomass and small-hydro technologies in rural regions. These concepts and theories are applied in a case study of rural communities in the Eastern Ontario Highlands, an impoverished area undergoing rapid restructuring driven by centralization of services and amenity migration but with abundant natural resources in form of forests, numerous waterways and open space which have attracted a broad range of new energy developments. Overall high levels of support for alternative energy development particularly for solar power were found, albeit for reasons of local energy security and not for reasons of preventing climate change. There was some evidence that seasonal residents are less supportive of hydro and biomass projects than permanent residents possibly reflecting broader trends in rural economies away from productive uses of land to consumptive appreciation of rural landscapes. The thesis suggests that collective action to advance energy projects in the case study area require agreement along three world-claims (truth, rightness and truthfulness) and that communication leading to discourse which uncovers hitherto hidden reasons for action is possible. These findings offer rare empirical evidence of the predictions of deliberative democratic theory in environmental planning settings. However, multiple barriers to communicative action were also identified and there is evidence that the state’s reliance on market incentives may have long term costs in terms of diminished public reasoning around renewable energy.

This research project applies feminist revisions of Habermas's theory of communicative action to evaluate levels of participation in individually-based development programs through the case study of one such program. Utilizing a triangulated methodology of participant observation, interviews, and discourse analysis, combined with considerations of feminist ethical issues, this research study examines the role of dialogue and "being heard" in the recovery and rehabilitation of women who used prostitution to feed chemical addiction. I utilize a "feminist communicative action" to evaluate a unique type of development program: one aimed at individual development. In addition, this project assesses the place of human communication, emotions, and community in the sustainability of such recovery programs.

Streszczenie:
Social media had an impactful role in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. Facebook as a public sphere space was used as a powerful tool to enhance communicative action among Egyptians, dissidents, and global observers. Drawing on the philosophical and theoretical notions of individuality and the responsibilities of the state of John Locke (1689; 1690), Jean Jacques Rousseau (1762); the public sphere and communicative action of Jürgen Habermas (1981; 1989); and Manuel Castells network society and new public sphere (2004; 2006; 2008), this thesis empirically investigates the role of social media, specifically Facebook, during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. Theories and concepts including the strength of weak ties, social movement theory, and Internet and organizational theory, a discussion of recent writings from both sides of the spectrum—those believing social media to hold power and those with the opposite view—inform the theoretical foundation of this thesis. The primary purpose of this thesis is to better understand what power lies in Facebook as used during the Egyptian Revolution. Using a qualitative approach, a methodological frame is employed to examine both the form and content of Facebook posts. This study concludes three major findings regarding the social power of Facebook during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution: the power of attention and momentum, the power of cooperation, and the creation of a repository of information and communication.

Feminist theory is a vast area of discourse and, while the differences between the many tendencies are extremely interesting, it is beyond the scope of this thesis to engage in such an inquiry. I have chosen to conduct a critique of Habermas's theory of communicative action from a perspective informed for the most part by postmodern/poststructural feminism. I hope that my reasons for working within such a framework will become evident in the following chapters but, in my view, a postmodern/poststructural feminist perspective sharpens the critique of Habermas's theory precisely because it stands in such contrast to it. For the purposes of this thesis, my critique will focus upon Habermas's most recent work - The Theory of Communicative Action, Volume I: Reason and the Rationalization of Society (1984), and Volume II: The Critique of Functionalist Reason (1987). Other works by Habermas will not be specifically addressed although references will be made to them as necessary to clarify his positions on various issues.

This thesis seeks to develop a conceptual framework for the creation and analysis of contemporary performance practice which draws from Jurgen Habermas's theories of communicative action and the public sphere. A consideration of political theory (notably Habermas) and critics of Habermas's work is combined with the construction of a performance making method. Operations of Dialogue is the name of both this performance making method and the resulting performance completed in September 2006. This process was structured to facilitate the particular negotiation of the performance material by the performers, identified in this work by the term' dialogical actors'. The performance of Operations of Dialogue foregrounds its own making processes as a primary subject of the staged performance work. Its content was compiled and managed by the performers themselves who selected, edited and refmed the performance material. The thesis offers a detailed overview and analysis of the making process and performance, reflecting on the actors' learning processes and the resonances with Habennasian theories of communicative action and the public sphere. This thesis is accompanied by the DVD of the performance of Operations of Dialogue which the reader is encouraged to watch before reading the writing. The thesis sets out a theoretical framework for the analysis which looks at various dimensions of Habennasian theory in relation to contemporary contexts and performance practices. This includes: the relationship to ideology critique, through comparisons with the work of Augusto Boal and Forced Entertainment; the relevance of the public sphere for political performance and the University context; and the interaction between communicative action and forms of verbatim performance. This latter section in particular considers theorists, including Crossley, White and Gilligan whose work challenges and extends the principles of Habermasian dialogue in theatrically relevant directions.

Political legitimacy is a fundamental problem in the modern state. According to Habermas (1973), current legitimation methods are losing the sufficiency needed to support political systems and decisions. In response, Habermas (1987) developed the theory of communicative action as a new method for establishing political legitimacy. The current study applies the communicative action theory to Kuwait’s current political transformation. This study addresses the nature of the foundation of Kuwait, the regional situation, the internal political context, and the current economic challenges. The specific political transformation examined in this study is a national development project known as Vision of 2035 supported by the Amir as the head of the state. The project aims to develop a third of Kuwait’s land and five islands as special economic zones (SEZ). The project requires new legislation that would fundamentally change the political and economic identity of the country. The study applies the communicative action theory in order to achieve a mutual understanding between different groups in Kuwait regarding the project’s features and the legislation required to achieve them.

The article presents the results of the analysis of the communicative strategy of criticism realized in the English cinema discourse. The research is done within the methodological framework of the cognitive-discursive approach to language where the criticism communicative strategy is viewed as a verbal / co-verbal expression of a negative assessment of a certain object (usually, a person) as demonstrating behaviour that deviates from the ontological (utilitarian) norms. The communicative intention of the subject of criticism is realised through verbal and co-verbal actions which interact on the principles of coordination. The verbal expression of criticism can be explicit, employing, among other means, negatively coloured nouns and adjectives, or implicit, employing rhetoric questions or any other linguistic units that can be interpreted as criticism in the situation of communication. Verbal utterances of criticism can be self-addressed to express self-criticism. The theoretical value of the research is determined by the implementation of the cognitive-discursive approach which makes it possible to analyse a speech strategy as a cognitive phenomenon, and its practical value is determined by the possibility of using the methodical technique developed in the paper to analyse other communicative strategies.

This thesis examines how communication technology is used for creating a democratic and committed participation within collective action organizations (CAOs). This is achieved by illuminating how organizations' structure and culture relate to their communication. It’s done by in-depth interviews with network-based movements and association-based organizations, and analyses of their digital newsletters. The analysis is based on affordance-driven theory, capturing the interaction between organizations and their digital platforms. The focus lies on how internal democracy and collective action are afforded or constrained to some degrees. Degrees of deliberation for creating common ground and active participation are made visible by using the concept of communicative action. Theories within social movement studies, such as collective action, broaden the understanding of how the perception of digital tools shapes and is shaped by their structure and culture. The results show that the usage and coordination of communication channels is essential for the practice of internal democracy in everyday work, beyond annual meetings and board meetings. Independent chat-based platforms enable an increased control of conversations, cooperation and coordination, while information overload and effective decision- making processes can hinder democratic participation. Commercial social media platforms such as Facebook enables new flows of engagement and connectivity but constrains coordination and control of the framing process within Facebook groups. Additionally, unpredictable algorithms and advertising policy on Facebook makes it difficult to reach out. Overall, the study suggests a broadened view of communication, where communication and usage of digital media should not be considered as instrumental entities. Rather, it is strongly related to how channels are being coordinated, how organizations are organized and the view of participation. Formal structures can both hinder and enable increased communicative action that contributes to democratic participation.

Streszczenie:
This thesis endeavours to articulate a socialist feminist critique of Jurgen Habermas's theory of communicative action through an examination of the conception of domination and the possibilities of emancipation elaborated in this theory. It argues that the example of women's domination in late modern societies reveals shortcomings that significantly challenge Habermas's conception of domination as the systemic and cultural reification of communicatively-structured contexts of everyday life. The thesis locates these lacunae in Habermas's reading of the concept of labour in Hegel and Marx, conducted within the terms of a distinction between labour and interaction. Utilizing the socialist feminist categories of the gender division of labour and of patriarchy, the theory of communicative action is demonstrated to be markedly ambivalent with respect to its capacity to systematically identify forms of women's oppression. Consequently the notion of emancipatory practice as the communicative rationalization of everyday life is likewise constrained.

Streszczenie:
Jurgen Habermas is a second-generation social philosopher of the Frankfurt school, the birthplace of critical theory. He suggests that modernity is a project of substituting rationality for religion. In his analysis, such a succession is the result of a process of social evolution, in which each developmental stage has its basic concepts and modes of understanding subjective, objective, and social worlds. For him, the salient feature of rationality consists of differentiation between various validity claims of truth, truthfulness, and sincerity which are indistinguishable in religious language. The rationalization of religion, hence, progresses in terms of a differentiation between validity claims, a decentration of human understanding, the disenchantment of the world, and the linguistification of the sacred. Habermas proposes a universal pragmatics in which two modes of language use are separated: instrumental-strategic, and communicative. He thinks that the failure of the enlightenment movement to replace religion with reason stems from its preoccupation with instrumental reason and language use, dispensing with communicative rationality; and the remedy lies in communicative rationality.
Critically analyzing Habermas' theory of communicative action, this study examines Habermas' basic idea of substituting communicative rationality for religion in the light of his critique of Max Weber and of instrumental reason. Ontological, epistemological, methodological, and conceptual presuppositions in his argument are discussed and evaluated.

Streszczenie:
This thesis adopts Habermas’s theory of communicative action to explore how consensus-oriented actions contribute to knowledge creation and collective decision-making in collaborative governance processes. Through studying a case of collaborative governance in the city of Berlin, various analytical generalizations concerning these research topics are developed. The case study shows that when participants orient their actions towards reaching a consensus, they are capable of sharing and assessing knowledge related to desires and emotions, facts, and norms. Furthermore, they can use this knowledge to collectively define problems and propose solutions that meet the goals of stakeholders as far as possible. Nevertheless, acting communicatively does not guarantee that the proposed solutions are adopted. When interests are opposed, participants often have to renounce certain individual wants in order to make collective decisions. If they are not able to prioritize collective goals over individual ones, collaborative governance undertakings might end without agreements. Taking into consideration the results of the analysis, this dissertation proposes differentiating between two types of consensus: communicative consensus, which is attained when participants reach an understanding on the validity of knowledge; and consensus on decisions, which is achieved when they collectively agree on how to act. This research demonstrates that by using communicative action theory, events and interactions can be analysed from the perspective of participants who employ language and communicative rationality to shape collaborative governance processes.

This thesis is about grounding an increasingly common practice in an established theory where no explicit theory currently exists. The common practice that is the subject of this study is information security. It is commonly held that information security means maintaining the confidentiality, integrity (accuracy) and availability of information. It seems that a whole industry has built up with tools, techniques and consultants to help organisations achieve a successful information security practice. There is even a British Standard containing around 130 controls, and a management system to guide organisations and practitioners. In the absence of many alternatives this British Standard has grown into something of a requirement for organisations who are concerned about the security of their information. The British Standard was developed almost entirely through the collaboration of some powerful blue-chip organisations. These organisations compared their practices and found some key areas of commonality. These common areas became the foundation of many information security practices today. Although there has been considerable evolutionary change the fundamentals, and not least the principles of confidentiality, integrity and availability, remain largely the same. It is argued in this thesis that the absence of a theoretical grounding has left the domain as weak and unable to cope with the rapidly developing area of information security. It is also argued that there was far too little consideration of human issues when the standard was devised and that situation has worsened recently with greater reliance on information security driven by more threats of increasing complexity, and more restrictive controls being implemented to counteract those threats. This thesis aims to pull human issues into the domain of information security: a domain which is currently dominated by non-social and practical paradigms. The key contribution of this thesis is therefore to provide a new model around which information security practices can be evaluated. This new model has a strong and established theoretical basis. The theory selected to underpin the new model is in the broad domain of critical social theory.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation explores the potential for utilizing Jurgen Habermas’ Theory of Communicative Action (TCA) as a hermeneutical method in biblical studies—in this case—Johannine agency and mission. The thesis is developed by means of TCA and four “contextual anchor points.” These components of critical and literary theory are used in a sequential argument to examine the thesis: The Johannine community was portrayed by John as divine communicative action to the world. After a brief introduction, chapter two discusses TCA, differentiating its relevant aspects from those unsuitable. An examination of the intertextual interface between John and his readership is performed in chapter three. Chapter four analyzes John’s call for unity in the face of cosmic brokenness and division over Jesus. Though John portrays a closed κόσμος, opposed to its creator, he demonstrates openness, showing interest in gathering exiles. Unity is for the sake of the world (13:35; 17:21, 23). Chapter four discusses the possibility that the AD 70 loss of the temple was John’s motivation for communicative action to his fellow “Jews.” Chapter five examines re-creation. Humanity separated from its creator was incapable of communicative reason. Jesus therefore served as God’s communicative act and Tatwort (deed-word, sign) to set it free. Chapter six concerns the mediatorial role of the παράκλητος. Central to John’s eschatology was the continued presence of Messiah through the Spirit. The παράκλητος was the communicative glue of the Johannine community, mediating communicative action to the world. Chapter seven concludes the study, demonstrating the community was a provocateur of life and judgment, gathering those who responded to communicative action and relinquishing others to judgment. The community’s oneness served as a Tatwort (deed-word) to the κόσμος. Their words and deed-words served as divine communicative action to re-create the world.

Streszczenie:
This thesis focuses on an under-researched area of tourism -the multi stakeholder, inter organisational business to business Tourism IT domain which exhibits a marked rate of failure. A critical review of B2B case studies reveals that this failure is in large part due to the primacy afforded to technical problem solving approaches over human centred ones. The main purpose of the research is therefore stated as: "how do we ensure that, as technological solutions are implemented within this domain, due consideration is given to human-centred issues?" In order to tackle this research problem an interdisciplinary approach is taken and a communicative model for stakeholder consultation is developed. At the centre of the model lies an innovative method for deconstructing and reconstructing stakeholder discourse. A Co-operative Inquiry research methodology was used and a significant number of stakeholders were engaged in an Open Space event sponsored by two major Tourism IT companies who wanted to investigate the issues and opportunities connected with travel distribution and technology. This was followed up with face to face interviews and live discussions over the internet. In addition stakeholder discourse was captured via the Travelmole tourism discussion site. The discourse between stakeholders was reconstructed and the normative and objective claims analysed in depth. The presentation of these reconstructions in textual, tabular and diagrammatic formats captures the complexity of stakeholder interactions, revealing that although IT is an important tool, what really lies at the core of multi stakeholder projects are the normative positions to which participants subscribe. The model provided a practical means for critiquing stakeholder discourse, helping to identify stakeholders both involved and affected by the issue; juxtaposing the 'is' against the 'ought'; and enabling critical reflection on the coercive use of power. The review of the tourism literature revealed that these issues are as important in general B2B tourism partnerships as in Tourism IT and in this respect the model provides a practical tool for critique and for enabling the formation of a shared normative infrastructure on which multi stakeholder projects can proceed. In addition, while borrowing from Management Science, this thesis also makes a contribution to it, specifically in the area of boundary critique, through the way in which Habermas' ideal speech criteria arc practically implemented.

The present work is an investigation on philosophy of education in the theoretical context of the Theory of Communicative Action, by Jürgen Habermas. It is a proposition of a pedagogical action concept within the Habermas’ categories of analysis over the social action, i.e. an analysis of the pedagogical action. The first chapter presents a literature review as well as brief mentions over this subject included in Habermas’ texts. It verifies a point of cleavage in the literature, concerning the relationship between pedagogical action and communicative action that leads towards a dichotomy between conceptual identity or mutual exclusion. The section discusses the concept of pedagogic action in the theory of communicative action. The problem investigated is: what is the specificity of the pedagogical action and how it is structured according to communicative action, despite the asymmetry between the actors? The second chapter reconstructs briefly the conceptual cutting of the Habermas’ Discourse Theory. It emphasizes the reflexivity of the natural language, the main characteristic for the communicative action, for the discourse and pedagogical action. The learning theme is also addressed in this part. The third and final chapter performs the analysis of the pedagogical action, following the thread of relations between rationality and learning. At first, it points out the role of learning in the Habermas’ theory which is located in the discourse. Also, it argues for an asymmetrical moment of the discourse, in which success in learning is a prerequisite for reaching any agreement. The study proposes the explanatory discourse as the specific lócus of the pedagogical action; the problems concerning the intelligibility make it necessary and explicit. The pedagogical action is included or happens together with the explanatory discourse whose properties make it possible. The analysis also proposes the category of pedagogical situation as a specific situation of pedagogical action which is necessary for the its understanding in a communicative model of action. The issue concerning the coordination between teachers and students’ action plans is presented in this part conducing to the focus of the didactic thematization or the didactic use of language, which is the médium of this interaction. It characterizes the aspects of the didactic thematization engendering and anticipation; the first one refers to the abstract relationship with the world due to the use of explanatory language, and the second deals with the understanding of the factual positions taken by the parties involved in the process, even if they are not explicit. Finally, it addresses the pedagogical action while oriented to the learning process when it tries to respond to the problem stated in the beginning of this work. The distinction between the objectifying attitude of the strategic action and hypothetical attitude of the discourse, simultaneously performative and objectifying, responds to the matter of the strategic apparent. To the question of the compatibility between communicative symmetry and pedagogic asymmetry it responds, from the perspective of the means of the action, through the subsumption of the didactic thematization in the explicative, and from the perspective of the ends, through the subsumption of the orientation to the learning process in the orientation to the understanding process. In summary, the specificity of the pedagogical action is the didactic thematization, which is structured according to the communicative action through the properties of the explanatory discourse.

The analysis of the ballast and dimension of the Judiciary while democratic instance and of how the opening of its access and the revision of its role can contribute to the exercise of democracy were the nodal points of the work evolved, which consolidates its theoretical basis on the theory of communicative action of Habermas, seeking to demonstrate, in a first attempt to experiment its categories to the praxis which results from the inter action of the Special Judiciaries with the Consumer´s Defense Code (Law 9099/95 and Law 8078/90), how they can perform as instruments of democracy in judicial public sphere. In the development of the subject we pose the process in such a manner as to reproduce the enormous differences and conflicts found out in social environment, and as a conductor of necessities and social expectations, also finding a peculiar form of society´s political participation through the Judiciary, argumentative stage for the reaching of agreements, which may express a result of a deliberative but not decisive nature. Also it was sought to demonstrate how process can be put into action so as to permit, within the scope of that institutionalized sphere, a greater effectiveness of fundamental rights, the equalization of syntonies which would permit a reduction of judicial inequalities inherent in social reality, operating the transformation of legal equality to material one, at the procedural level, and how, reflexively, this can reach concrete pan- prosecutional results. It was also noticed by the dynamics of the two micro-systems and their results the potential capacity of propitiating the affectiveness of alterity sentiment, albeit tenuous, of those auto-referential subsystems referred to by Habermas, which oppose society as supreme forces of domination in present days. It was also sought to unveil a new interaction among the Judiciary, democracy and social participation, mainly as collectivized individualities, which might potentialize the resistances and create short cuts to the accomplishment of the values which permeate the contexture of their longing for equality and dignity. In a disbelieving world crowded with complexities and multiple problems, which, more and more, globally affect the destinies and the remotest realities, any path leading to reflection and criticism, even through the re-reading of a Power of State, creates, itself, a finality, by putting on the stage a public discussion of the legitimate expectations of society.

With modernity in crisis, criticizes the Enlightenment ideals and even the traditional notion of reason in check, began to seek a better understanding of reality, as an alternative to supply a growing social discontent due to the distance between the adminstrative decisions, including judicial, and actual desires of citizens. Among the proposals that combine the new democratic ideal context of the living world, the German philosopher Jurgen Habermas proposes a paradigm shift of Reason through a dialogical logic, transferring the notion of Practical Reason for a procedural spectrum, using as the indispensable tool communicative action, discourse and consensus among stakeholders; Moreover, it promotes a reconstruction of law and state, with the overcoming of the existing theoretical models - liberal and republican - and the formatting of a democratic state effectively, since it enables the participation of concerned in the creation of rights. In other words, Habermas betting on the success of the process, which is effective communicative interaction through an agreement discussed, debated and reflected on the basis of the reasons given by those concerned. Given this Habermasian line that involves the effective participation of citizens and civil society institutions, and the state itself, the formulation of rules and decision-making process arises, for some, the idea of this theory inapplicable because they understand that, according to the Brazilian reality mainly in relation to the educational deficit of the population, this idea would be impaired. The Collective Labour Law, as a branch of our legal system, promotes the overthrow of this premise inapplicability of proposed which adopts Habermas communicative action as an instrument to reach understanding, consensus of stakeholders, thus promoting a harmonious relationship between the validity and facticity of the norm. Important to highlight the coexistence of individual and collective interests, with no prevalence of simple will of the majority, but the best justified within the dialogical process will occur and guarantees the preservation of fundamental individual rights.

Streszczenie:
This thesis explores how small group interactions around problem-solving in secondary school mathematics can be understood using a theoretical framework of Communicative Action inspired by Habermasian Critical Theory. How does cognition express itself socially? What are the technical features of communicative acts that afford access to the development of mutual understanding? A case study approach was used to investigate episodes of interactive speech acts. Participants included three Year 7 mathematics teachers and 87 students in 3 different English secondary schools, who were engaged in adopting aspects of a 'Complex Instruction' pedagogical approach to design and coordinate problem-solving groupwork. Tasks were collaboratively designed with the participating teachers, followed by participant observation of the lessons, and post-lesson interviews with the teachers. Small group interactions were recorded using Flip cameras at each table that captured audio and video of student interactions around the tasks, and whole class video was also recorded. Initial analysis of small group interactions led to the development of codes and models focused on understanding interactions from an intersubjective perspective informed by Habermas' Theory of Communicative Action. These models and codes were then iteratively used to generate and refine analytical statements and working hypotheses from further interrogation of the data. The pragmatic focus of this study is on the content of episodes of utterances. These episodes are part of the intersubjective level at which teaching and learning take place. The findings from this analysis add to the field by developing a technical and critical treatment of evidence of intersubjectivity in mathematics education. Understanding the intersection of meaningful communication, action, and practices at the small group level is argued to provide novel insights into practice and design for problemsolving groupwork in mathematics education. The contributions of this thesis include the development of an Intersubjective Framework for Analysis of small group interactions, evidence that this framework can be productively used to identify ways in which the development of collaborative understanding expresses itself at the small group level, how it breaks down and how it can be supported. Methodologically this work makes a claim to knowledge in the development of microanalyses of situated cognition informed by Habermasian social theory. This work explores the merits and limitations of the communicative perspective in understanding small group interactions in mathematics problem-solving situations. A central claim is that Habermas' sociological approach can be used productively to investigate small group interactions in mathematics classrooms. Theoretically this work makes a claim to knowledge in the development of a novel set of codes and models that can be used to analyse evidence of intersubjectivity through analysis of episodes of utterances in situ. This analytical framework is used to argue that small group interactions can be understood productively from a theoretical perspective of Communicative Action. These contributions suggest that insights from a perspective of Communicative Action can give educators critical pragmatic insights into curriculum design, structuring groupwork and associated pedagogy, and communicative (as opposed to instrumental or strategic) intervention in the support of intersubjective understanding.

Intensive Language Action Therapy (ILAT) is a short-term aphasia therapy that emphasises massed-practise of language, where communication is framed through language action games that approximate everyday interactions. Despite increasing interest in ILAT, a comprehensive description of its methods has thus far been missing. Furthermore due to inconsistent results, further exploration of cortical reorganisation of language functions following ILAT is warranted. The underlying principles and practical features of ILAT methods and of language-action games are fully described, including the structure and materials for two specific games. 14 English speaking patients with chronic aphasia underwent two weeks of ILAT utilising the methods outlined. Pre and post measures of language performance were collected through standardised clinical assessments, along with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans from a subset of 8 patients. Accuracy and response times for speech output and comprehension during language-action games were also recorded to measure success during the therapy interval. Data analysis showed significant improvements in clinical assessments of naming and comprehension, but not in auditory or syntactic processing tasks. Significant increases were also seen in patients’ self-ratings of quality of communication following therapy. Video and voice recordings during therapy sessions demonstrated significantly faster response times in production and comprehension of language, alongside an increase in the complexity of patients’ spoken output. Cortical activation was recorded whilst patients heard low-level noise, sentences containing ambiguous words and low-ambiguity sentences. Although the results showed no changes in cortical activation in the group of patients whilst processing low-level noise or low ambiguity sentences, increases in language-induced activation were seen in single-subject analyses in both the left and right hemispheres. Furthermore the group of patients recruited the right hemisphere significantly more than the left hemisphere following ILAT when processing complex sentences containing ambiguous words. iii Clinical assessments and measures of everyday communication showed undergoing two weeks of ILAT significantly improved speech output and comprehension in patients with chronic aphasia. Gains made in communicative performance during therapy highlight the importance of recording therapy sessions for additional assessment of therapy efficacy. Although conclusions regarding cortical reorganisation are not entirely clear, they indicate the important role of the right hemisphere in reorganisation of language after stroke.

During the last decades Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) has become a more frequently used method to recognise adult’s prior learning. This thesis analyses a process of RPL in health care, where health care assistants are assessed against subjects in the upper-secondary health care program. Prior research on RPL is to a high degree non-theoretical and focus is primarily on policy level research. This thesis adds to the field by progressing a critical social theory perspective on RPL. In the thesis the RPL process is analysed through Jürgen Habermas’ theory of communicative action and Axel Honneth’s Recognition theory. General questions posed are: What are the power issues in the RPL process? What implications does the tension between the lifeworld of work and the system of education have? What consequences does mutual understanding and communication have for the outcome of the RPL process? What part does recognition play for the participants? The results disclose the power relations that emerge in the relationship between participants and teachers. A caring ideology is developed and problematized. Further, the importance of mutual understanding between participant and teachers in the assessment of prior learning is discussed focusing on the consequences a lack of mutual understanding could have for the outcome in such assessments. On a macro level the analysis demonstrates the tension between the participants prior learning and the educational systems demand for formalising prior learning. In addition, analyses of a more developmental character that intends to show the potential for critical learning, change and recognition are progressed. The results suggest that communicative action can be used to develop RPL into processes focusing on critical learning and change. Recognition of traits and abilities could also enhance individual’s positive relations with the self. Such recognition could develop self-confidence and thus RPL could encourage learning and cultivate continuing self-realisation through work.

The Action Research project studies the role of information management and knowledge generation in establishing overseas political and trade activity to assist regional development in Australia. It is the work of a researcher whose background in information management ranges across more than 30 years working in the newspaper and regional economic development industries. It applies a hybrid term called “communicative creativity” – distilled from Wieman’s (1963) Doctrine of Creative Interchange and Habermas’s (1984) Theory of Communicative Action – to the researcher’s professional practice of facilitating the development of two entities – the economic development organization and its method of facilitating opportunities in China – against Nonaka and Takeuchi’s (1995) Five-Phase Model of the Organisational Creation Process. The thesis describes how the researcher’s previous career and life experience in China are used in the establishment of a model that will assist his current career in regional economic development. It explains the reasons for choosing the Participatory Action Research method and uses the researcher’s personal and professional voices in a multi-vocal, neopragmatic style blended with visual rich picture presentation involving graphics and photos to tell the story. The thesis – with its style and voices – is a soft systems picture in its own right. The research outcome is a knowledge management model for promoting. This study concerns school-development and the political public sphere in a Swedish context. It draws on an earlier study in which school-leaders expressed political signals in relation to school-development as being ambiguous and contradictive. On one hand they saw a political support for openness and dialogue in school. On the other hand they perceived control and competition. Another point of departure for the study is what tentatively was suggested as a shift in focus for the state government of schools during the 1990:s, from decentralization as such to an increased emphasis on control of its consequences. The overriding aim of the study was to illuminate how this shift could be understood regarding the relation between school-development and the political public sphere.

The study was conducted within a larger, national project where almost 900 schools worked without the national time table. Policy texts behind the governments’ decision on starting the project were used in order to describe and analyse school policy. School-leaders´ accounts on school-work and school-development in the project was used for analysis and description of school practice.

Habermas’ theory of communicative action, particularly his notions on “the welfare-state crisis” as an opening for a revitalized political public sphere grounded upon communicative action, was used as a theoretical frame for the study.

The results support the assumption that school policy, as formulated in the studied documents, did shift over time from a focus on decentralization to an emphasis on control of its consequences. The school-leaders, however, gave voice to a school practice where the importance of a communicative direction was emphasized. The overall conclusion is that while a vital political public sphere in Habermas´ terms is supported in school practice, school policy seems to direct school development in the opposite direction, thereby closing the opportunity for school to support a revitalized public sphere.

Wukan is one out of about ten thousand local protests annually in China, but unique in the modern Chinese history since it resulted in suspension of land transaction and the leaders of the protest where elected into the village committee, in an election which is considered by external observers as the most democratic in China. The aim of this paper is to understand destructive and constructive processes emerging out of interaction between protesters and the authorities. The focus is on how the actors (the authorities vs. protesting farmers) interpret their opportunities to: a) understand the intention of the other, b) be understood by the other, and c) influence the action of the other, in the different phases of the conflict. The conclusion is that when actors respond to disagreement with discursive closure, the destructivity increases, and vice versa.

Streszczenie:
Based on Habermas’s theory of communicative action, a study of school education in Hong Kong was conducted, with a span more than sixty years from 1945 to 2008. It focused on how social reproduction was possible in school education, how school education was worked in general, and how school education was developed. Moreover, it employed a three-scale analysis of situational analysis and a historical analysis to analyze the above three research foci. In situational analysis, at classroom scale, a symbolic reproduction of the lifeworld of students was depicted, whereas at school scale, an uncoupling of the system from the lifeworld was seen, and finally, at regional scale, a colonization of the lifeworld by the system was concluded. Moreover, its historical development depicted a phenomenon of a colonization of the lifeworld by the system. In sum, the above, other than at classroom scale, showed mainly an undesired and distorted way of development of school education. However, educators and the public sphere strove for the desired or logic development, and resisted the undesired or dynamic one conducted by the government administration. Based on the summary and conclusions drawn from the analysis of school education in Hong Kong, the study elucidated a new and critical approach in sociology of education. This approach was set out in two dimensions. The first dimension was a three-level analysis of education, with meta-theoretical level concerned learning and teaching action as communicative action, with methodological level concerned interpretive understanding, and with empirical level concerned development of education as a process of rationalization. The second dimension was three concerns in the study of school education, with communicative rationality as the rationality problematic in inquiry, with the integration of the perspectives of action and the system, and with the logic development of education. This approach, based on the theory of communicative action, did provide a conceptual framework for a fuller picture of education, and for a pathway to further development in education.

Streszczenie:
Communicative approaches, such as communicative language teaching (CLT) and task-based language teaching (TBLT), have been promoted in second language education around the world for over four decades. This continued mainstream status may be due to their convincing theoretical bases in principles of second language acquisition, which are believed to be beneficial to language learners. However, they are not widely accepted by teachers in many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. A number of studies in a variety of contexts have aimed to identify factors which impede their implementation, but few of these have further built on the implications of these investigations. The current investigation, instead, studied classroom practice in a Taiwanese EFL secondary school, in order to identify and solve any problems arising. Based on the assumption that teacher learning is a complex process, it was necessary to set up a teacher development programme (TD) and use action research to explore how it could help teachers develop their practitioner knowledge of communicative approaches. Drawing on the data from questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations, the main finding was that the teachers’ limited understanding of these approaches seemed to be a more dominant factor than the teachers’ beliefs. This resulted in perceptions of learners, syllabus/textbooks and time becoming barriers to the implementation of the approaches, as often pointed out in past studies. This study also found effective ways to encourage teachers to learn to implement this new pedagogy. First, supplying examples of a theory’s practical application equipped practitioners to develop practical knowledge of that theory. Second, collaborative learning between the teachers, as well as the assistance of an expert, helped make the teacher education programme work. This led to the conclusion that communicative approaches motivated teachers in their professional practice. The findings of this research could shed light on these aspects of L2 teaching in a variety of other similar contexts and could be useful for educational policymakers, practitioners, and teacher educators in implementing innovative approaches.

The aim of this work is to track the size of specific influences that shaped Jürgen Habermas in the construction of the Theory of Communicative Action. In his major work, the habermasion intention was to harmonize a wide range of authors and theories that treated in their particularity would be able to converge to an emancipatory project made possible by a rationality of communicative content. For this purpose, the attention is focused on the second volume of this work, especially on the role of Talcott Parsons and his systems theory, on the sociology of Émile Durkheim that provides interaction through language and its relationship with Habermas through several ways, on the methodological discussions with Popper and the dispute with positivism, and on the presence of critical theory and its many characters.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of the present thesis is to create an understanding of entrepreneurship interpreted as communicative action. This is done through reflections on an interactive study that was planned and conducted together with members of a civic network-organization called Societal Change in Practice (SIP). According to Habermas, civic organizations are ideally characterized by a communicative rationality that enables them to organize informal public spheres; that is, arenas in social life where individuals can come together to discuss and act upon societal problems or opportunities that they have experienced in their private life-spheres. I have actively participated in three ventures with members from SIP. The first venture revolves around my own and members from SIP’s respective practices as education coordinators. Based on our common interest in education and learning in relation to entrepreneurship, we planned and conducted a series of joint activities that also involved our respective student groups. The activities are interpreted based on my own personal experiences as a researcher participating in a project that requires commitment and responsibility. The second venture involves the creation of a local community magazine that highlights examples of civic initiatives in two municipalities. The production of the magazine is interpreted as an example of how SIP creates public opinion in the local community. The third event relates to the organization of a conference on the subject of youth and digital media. The main message of the conference is interpreted in terms of a manifestation of what the public sphere can accomplish, or as a reaction in defense of a well-functioning public sphere in society. The methodological contribution of the thesis is its definition of three interactive research roles based on my own interaction as a researcher in different kinds of ventures. Based on a theatrical metaphor, I argue that the researcher can participate as one of the directors of a venture, as a member of the ensemble that performs a venture, or as a member of the audience that observes an event. The theoretical contribution of the study is that it shows how Habermas’ theory of communicative action can be modified and made useful as a theoretical frame of reference for studying entrepreneurship in civil society. Entrepreneurship is understood as a way to vitalize the informal public sphere, thereby influencing society as a whole and not just its economy.

Arif-Rahu, Mamoona. "FACIAL EXPRESSION DISCRIMINATES BETWEEN PAIN AND ABSENCE OF PAIN IN THE NON-COMMUNICATIVE, CRITICALLY ILL ADULT PATIENT". VCU Scholars Compass, 2010. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/153.

Streszczenie:
BACKGROUND: Pain assessment is a significant challenge in critically ill adults, especially those unable to communicate their pain level. At present there is no universally accepted pain scale for use in the non-communicative (cognitively impaired, sedated, paralyzed or mechanically ventilated) patient. Facial expressions are considered among the most reflexive and automatic nonverbal indices of pain. The facial expression component of pain assessment tools include a variety of facial descriptors (wincing, frowning, grimacing, smile/relaxed) with inconsistent pain intensity ratings or checklists of behaviors. The lack of consistent facial expression description and quantification of pain intensity makes standardization of pain evaluation difficult. Although use of facial expression is an important behavioral measure of pain intensity, precise and accurate methods for interpreting the specific facial actions of pain in critically ill adults has not been identified. OBJECTIVE: The three specific aims of this prospective study were: 1) to describe facial actions during pain in non-communicative critically ill patients; 2) to determine facial actions that characterize the pain response; 3) to describe the effect of patient factors on facial actions during the pain response. DESIGN: Descriptive, correlational, comparative. SETTING: Two adult critical care units (Surgical Trauma ICU-STICU and Medical Respiratory ICU-MRICU) at an urban university medical center. SUBJECTS: A convenience sample of 50 non-communicative critically ill intubated, mechanically ventilated adult patients. Fifty-two percent were male, 48% Euro-American, with mean age 52.5 years (±17. 2). METHODS: Subjects were video-recorded while in an intensive care unit at rest (baseline phase) and during endotracheal suctioning (procedure phase). Observer-based pain ratings were gathered using the Behavioral Pain Scale. Facial actions were coded from video using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) over a 30 second time period for each phase. Pain scores were calculated from FACS action units (AU) following Prkachin and Solomon metric. RESULTS: Fourteen facial action units were associated with pain response and found to occur more frequently during the noxious procedure than during baseline. These included areas of brow raiser, brow lower, orbit tightening, eye closure, head movements, mouth opening, nose wrinkling, and nasal dilatation, and chin raise. The sum of intensity of the 14 AUs was correlated with BPS (r=0.70, P<0.0001) and with the facial expression component of BPS (r=0.58, P<0.0001) during procedure. A stepwise multivariate analysis predicted 5 pain-relevant facial AUs [brow raiser (AU 1), brow lower (AU 4), nose wrinkling (AU 9), head turned right (AU 52), and head turned up (AU53)] that accounted for 71% of the variance (Adjusted R2=0.682) in pain response (F= 21.99, df=49, P<0.0001). The FACS pain intensity score based on 5 pain-relevant facial AUs was associated with BPS (r=0.77, P<0.0001) and with the facial expression component of BPS (r=0.63, P<0.0001) during procedure. Patient factors (e. g., age, gender, race, and diagnosis, duration of endotracheal intubation, ICU length of stay, and analgesic and sedative drug usages, and severity of illness) were not associated with the FACS pain intensity score. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the FACS pain intensity score composed of inner brow raiser, brow lower, nose wrinkle, and head movements reflected a general pain action in our study. Upper facial expression provides an important behavioral measure of pain which may be used in the clinical evaluation of pain in the non-communicative critically ill patients. These results provide preliminary results that the Facial Action Coding System can discriminate a patient’s acute pain experience.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation is a critical study of the paradigm of Liturgical Theology. Focus in this systematic inquiry has been on the Russian school with the focal point in the works of Alexander Schmemann, who was active in the late 20th century. The main question of the thesis concerns the relation between theory and practice in Liturgical Theology.                       It is claimed that the relation between theory and practice corresponds to the relation between ritual action and communicative action. The former concerns the identity founded on the unavoidable alterity immanent in life, but also transcending life through a holistic encounter with life, which enables us to express a holistic attitude to life and the entire world. The latter concerns the equally unavoidable rationalization of life which gives rise to a continuous atomization of life through science and the process of acquiring facts and data.                       The thesis makes use of different theories for the reaching of an explanatory theory in connection to theory and practice. Foremost the Theory of Communicative Action in the works of Jürgen Habermas and the re-interpretation of disclosure by Nikolas Kompridis is used. It is claimed tthat ritual action is connected to a primary disclosure attached to otherness with the intention of revealing the identity of the Ecclesia. Without identity, we are left with a never-ending debate and a continuous atomization where every answer exponentially provokes more questions. Communicative action then is connected with a secondary co-disclosure with the intention for the reaching of mutual understanding, making subjects accountable and responsible. Without communicative action we are bound on a long walk into the never ending sea of being. The missionary imperative in the Ecclesia is dependent on the co-existence of ritual action and communicative action.

In the light of current theoretical knowledge, this action-research focuses on a project in which learners at the National University –Palmira have the opportunity of improving their inter-language in English. Our main hypothesis is that by adopting the task-based approach, L2 learning would be more efficient. It is inferred based-learning activities will help them to develop ways of obtaining knowledge and strategies to interact in real-life situations, and techniques to extract information from scientific written texts. This hypothesis has been validated through the realization of teaching / learning practices. Some secondary hypotheses to establish learners‘ and teachers‘ needs, expectations, goals and attitudes of formal training in English were also verified in this action-research. We hope this contribution may lead our university to adopt pedagogical innovative practices in which learners feel more concerned and involved in acquiring a second language

Streszczenie:
The community-based public health coalition has proliferated in public health practice since the 1970‘s as a favored means of achieving community participation in public health promotion. There is concern, however, that many contemporary coalitions are not particularly inclusive, and that population health indicators fail to demonstrate significant improvement in health outcomes resultant from coalition practice. This dissertation research was designed to critically examine participation and dissemination of coalition-derived ideas through ethnographic study of five community-based participatory public health coalitions in the United States. The research answers calls from public health scholars to improve upon the coalition theory base and to contribute a useful theory of dissemination of public health interventions. At the same time, the research contributes to anthropological calls for better understanding of mechanisms that discourage the participation of all stakeholders. The research uses a theoretical model – Habermas‘ Theory of Communicative Action – that sees participation and dissemination as linked phenomena. The research was designed to contribute to an existing theory of coalition function, Butterfoss and Kegler‘s Community Coalition Action Theory. Qualitative evidence of communicative action was gathered through participant observation of coalition meetings and semistructured interviews with a purposive sample of members of each study coalition. Data were compared across coalitions and across respondent categories to determine variation in diversity of coalition participation and forms of coalition-derived communicative action; as well as indicators associated with motivation for coalition participation, barriers to participation, and dissemination of ideas both in coalition meetings and to broader discourse communities outside the coalition. The results of this applied research include the creation of a typology of diversity of coalition participation, improved understanding of differences in motivation for coalition participation between members in- and outside of the social services sector, the identification of collateral idea exchange as a key coalition outcome, and means of overcoming barriers to participation and dissemination. In addition to representing contributions to theory within anthropology and public health, these results have been shared with leaders of each of the study coalitions.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation deals with how Swedish society is confronting the democratic challenge of finding ways to integrate individuals and groups with a diversity of cultural and religious beliefs and social practices. The idea that democracy must include all members of society is central in contemporary welfare states. In Sweden this idea is closely related to a concept of social justice and equality. This means that this study deals with aspects of integration processes. Social services are one of the societal institutions that institutionalize the moral conceptions of how life should be lived. Therefore, its function in the integration processes mirrors the ethos of society as a whole. The chief characteristics of a democratic state are that it represents every member of society and that it is transparent, communicative, and reflexive. But this is not easily performed. The State may exercise oppression in the form of forced assimilation through the culturally detached design of law and policy, and with the politics of diversity, minority groups may exert internal oppression of vulnerable elements within the group. This tension expresses a tension that is called the Paradox of Democracy in this thesis. Social workers deal with the paradox while handling society’s moral panic regarding “others’” traditions that are perceived as difficult to comprehend. Therefore, their investigative work is of great importance in a society that aspires to treat all citizens as equals. But the framework for such investigations is narrow and tightly controlled. A qualitative change in the scope of social workers’ ability to work in the service of communicative action within the complex areas discussed in this study could be a step towards broadening and deepening democratic practices. When the public institutions take their clients’ diverse wishes and needs seriously, and treat them as indicators of the actual needs of members of society, the public institutions receive a foundation for reciprocal and communicatively anchored integration work.
