Streszczenie:
This study explores the contradiction of the heart of ICT: the technology presents to us all manner of possibilities yet it habitually fails to deliver on those promises. This failure is often seen as arising from either a problem with the technology or end-user proficiency. Thus better technology and/or more effective end-user education are seen as the solutions. This study is based on the premise that such approaches are inherently faulty and explores how applicable notions of alienation can be in researching the contradictory nature of ICT. By using a critical realist methodology allied to tools available through PAR, this investigation engaged with participants in three distinct settings: ICT professionals; scholars concerned with researching the ethical/societal implications of ICT; and a group of pensioners living in South East London, UK. The research interrogated the literature concerned with themes of alienation and ICT to show there is a consensus that something called alienation does exist but that the term is used as a poorly defined descriptor of dissatisfaction with ICT. It also revealed that minimal research in the subject area has been undertaken using theories of alienation and none which involve multiple settings. The thesis makes an original and distinct contribution to the field by utilising one approach to alienation, that presented by Marx, in three seemingly disconnected settings to draw out the underlying commonalities shared by participants of these settings. In doing so, the findings challenge widespread assumptions about end-user experience of ICT and offer new insights into the much mentioned but little understood alienated way we experience ICT. Moreover, the thesis, in moving beyond description of alienation, to reveal the genesis of the condition, indicates the inadequacy of simply using the term alienation as an ill-defined label to describe people’s experiences of ICT. It argues for embracing a more rigorous approach to the issue to realise the significant potential offered through investigating and applying theories of alienation in research. Additionally it advances knowledge in the area by emphasising shared experiences of user groups which has considerable implications for future research. Finally the thesis is unique in highlighting the prospective benefits to be realised by researchers in adopting a CR methodology working in tandem with PAR methods in ICT research.

Ultra-wideband (UWB) communication has attracted an enormous amount of research in recent years, especially after the introduction of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) spectral mask. Ultra-short pulses allow for very high bit-rates while low power eliminates interference with existing narrowband systems. Low power, however, limits the propagation range of UWB radios to a few meters for indoors wireless transmission. Furthermore, received UWB signals are spread in time because of multipath propagation which results in high intersymbol interference at high data rates. Gaussian monocycle, the most commonly employed UWB pulse, has poor coverage under the FCC mask. In this thesis we demonstrate transmitters capable of generating UWB pulses with high power efficiency at Gb/s bit-rates. An efficient pulse results in higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver by utilizing most of the available power under the FCC spectral mask. We generate the pulses in the optical domain and use optical fiber to transport the pulses over several kilometers for distribution in a passive optical network. Optical fiber is very reliable for transporting radio signals with low power consumption. We use simple elements such as a Mach Zehnder modulator or a ring resonator for pulse shaping, allowing for integration in silicon. Being compatible with CMOS technology, silicon photonics has huge potential for lowering the cost and bulkiness of optical systems. Photodetection converts the pulses to the electrical domain before antenna transmission at the user side. The frequency response of UWB antennas distorts the UWB waveforms. We pro- pose a nonlinear optimization technique which takes into account antenna distortion to find pulses that maximize the transmitted power, while respecting the FCC spectral mask. We consider three antennas and design a unique pulse for each. The energy improvement in UWB pulses directly improves the receiver SNR. Simulation results show that optimized pulses have a significant bit error rate (BER) performance improvement compared to the Gaussian monocycle under multipath propagation. Our other contribution is evaluating a matched filter to receive efficiently designed UWB pulses. The matched filter is synthesized and fabricated in microstrip technology in collaboration with McGill University as an electromagnetic bandgap device. The frequency response of the matched filter shows close agreement with the target UWB pulse spectrum. BER measurements confirm superior performance of the matched filter compared to a direct conversion receiver. The UWB channel is very rich in multipath leading to ISI at high bit rates. Our last contribution is investigating the performance of receivers by simulating a system employing realistic channel conditions. Simulation results show that the performance of such system degrades significantly for high data rates. To compensate the severe ISI at gigabit rates, we investigate the Viterbi algorithm (VA) with a limited number of states and the decision feedback equalizer (DFE). We examine the required number of states in the VA, and the number of taps in the DFE for reliable Gb/s UWB trans- mission for line-of-sight channels. Non-line-of-sight channels were also investigated at lower speeds. BER simulations confirm that equalization considerably improves the performance compared to symbol detection. The DFE results in better performance compared to the VA when using comparable complexity as the DFE can cover greater channel memory with a relatively low complexity level.

Increased host mobility, and multi-homing make IP address management very complex in applications. Due to host mobility, the IP address of a host may change dynamically, and also frequently. Multi-homing leads to multiple IP addresses for a single host. Name-based socket is a solution to address the complex IP address management. It relieves the applications from the overhead, and moves it to the operating system. It uses a constant name, instead of an IP address to establish a connection, thus allowing for the IP address changes during the course of the connection. The current implementation of name-based sockets is on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). TCP restricts the connection to a single path, even when multiple capable paths are available. Multi-path communication provides higher reliability, and increase throughput. Today, multi-path connections are quite feasible, since many hosts are generally multi-homed. Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is designed to overcome the restrictions in TCP. It renders the ability to simultaneously use multiple paths between the peers. Thus, it offers higher reliability, and better throughput. One of the aims of this Master’s thesis is coalescing MPTCP and name-based socket to provide a mechanism which handles IP address management issues as well as provides high resilience, and throughput. Another important area of research is to discover ways of providing good user experience with IPv6 addresses. Given that IPv6 deployments are still in its infancy, there are high chances that IPv6 is broken. Hence, it is very important to protect the users from these IPv6 outages and thereby motivate the major websites and service providers to use IPv6. This will in turn help in the global deployment of IPv6. Happy eyeballs is a smart approach to determine the best suitable path from a dual-stack client to a dual-stack server. In order to save the users from IPv6 outages, this thesis work also focuses on implementing happy eyeballs on name-based sockets.

Streszczenie:

Over the years, local television news stations across the nation have seen a dramatic decrease in viewership. Much like newspapers, fewer people are relying on television news for several reasons. Two of the biggest culprits are the age of new technology and social media. These two factors alone have reprogrammed people's daily habits, changing the landscape of television news viewership and resulting in uncertain times at local television news stations. Few studies have been done on the future of local television news. Of the studies that have been conducted, it is clear to see that local news is still relevant even in times of change, uncertainty and evolution, but can it make enough of a profit to survive? The million dollar question TV executives are trying to answer is: How will local TV news stations stay afloat in these uncharted waters? In an attempt to answer this question, qualitative research in the form of ethnography and interview was conducted. The findings in this study reveal television news stations must stay on the cutting edge of technology in order to engage their viewers. They must also think of creative ways to generate revenue besides the traditional way of advertising. Without healthy news ratings, local television news organizations are forced to lower their advertising rates to those seeking to spend money on commercial time. This, in turn, has resulted in a loss of millions of dollars a year for TV stations. The end result will be evident to both stations and viewers. The future of local television news and the direct impact to viewers is discussed.

D'Aiello, Alan. "Communicating in the local : digital communications technology use in Brighton's gay pub scene". Thesis, University of Sussex, 2016. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/61485/.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is an analysis of the use and impact of digital communication technology (DCT) in the Gay pub scene in the Kemptown neighborhood of Brighton, East Sussex, UK. The purpose of this work is twofold: to create a snapshot record of the everyday activities in pub spaces at a particular point in the neighborhood's history from the point of view of an American gay man, and to develop an understanding of the impact of digital communications technology (DCT) on the activities in these spaces by investigating the impact of DCT on the idea of 'gay space'. This analysis is broken down into three distinct areas of enquiry: the implementation of DCT in pub spaces by the landlords/owners of the space, the use of DCT by the patrons of these spaces, and an analysis of those spaces that have not directly engaged DCT, neither implementing DCT as a feature of the location, nor limiting its use within the space. This thesis utilizes participant observations, auto ethnographic observations, and interviews made over a period of two years and engages with the theoretical arguments around gay space: its history both within the broad context of UK history, and also with Brighton's special historical status as a gay centre within the UK; its current uses; and the potential for its evolution. This investigation of hof DCT is impacting on gay space also questions to what extent 'gay space' is maintaining a sense of physicality and to what extent an extension of DCT-enabled virtual spaces is altering our relationship to these spaces. The work examines the notion of nostalgia, ownership, and control of space and attempts through its focus on several locations in Kemptown to catalogue the many changes in structure, clientele, locale, and business success that these spaces have gone through in a fairly short time and to determine to what extent the use and influences of DCT has driven these changes. The project includes interviews with landlords and patrons of eight current and former venues in Kemptown and encompasses a group of three key participants in detail through a series of scheduled interviews and group discussions conducted during the duration of the project, and details their particular relationships to the spaces in Kemptown as well as their uses of DCT in these spaces. These participants act as a focal point for the research by helping to create a frame of reference within the work balancing the author's auto ethnographic analysis with the point of view of a local Brighton gay male, as well as contribute to and support the broader narrative of the vicissitudes of smaller pub venues by helping to highlight the historical changes in the pubs being looked at. The specific questions that this research sets out to answer are: • How is digital communicative technology (DCT) affecting self defined gay spaces in Kemptown, Brighton? • How is DCT affecting the behaviours of the patrons and owners/operators in these spaces? • How are the owners/operators of these spaces adapting to DCT? Is there evidence of owners/operators conforming to Winston's theory on the suppression of disruptive potential of new and emerging media technology (1995)? • What are the implications, challenges and opportunities presented to those spaces which are not engaging with DCT in their spaces? • Are “gay spaces” in Kemptown still relevant with the intersection of digital and physical spaces? Do these spaces meet the same requirements as they have in the past? Does DCT have the ability on its own to maintain the relevance of a venue on its own when faced off against other pressures (such as commercial or demographic pressure)? The conclusions reached in this thesis draw attention to the potential for DCT: • Acting as a form of disruptive potential of new communication technologies (Winston, 1995). • The concerns that DCT is suppressing interpersonal communications in favor of mediated discourse (Turkle, 2011, 2012, 2015). • That automobility is creating a privatization of pub spaces, along with the creation of ‘non-places' (Bull, 2004) However, in the author's analysis, there is evidence of cohabitation, and adaptation towards DCT which is reminiscent of Winston's theory of the suppression of disruptive potential of emerging communication technology, as well as a resistance response with nostalgic overtones. The conclusions are also grounded in the larger narratives of pub culture within the UK and note the challenging culture that smaller, brewer-tied and non-tied gay venues have within these changing demographics and cultural acceptance of homosexuality in general. This research adds to the broader field of research into the adaptation of communications technology by drawing attention to the effects of DCT on both spaces and their users and also highlights their effects on a subculture.

Streszczenie:
A defining aspect of our era is the continuous migration of media consumers toward alternative distribution platforms. These are used to access content formerly available only in traditional media's original format. The intensification of wireless networks and the increasing portability of content, music content in particular, has resulted in radio listeners reverting to wireless delivery technologies to access, discover, listen to, share and store music. This empirical research project explores the consequences of mobile technology on commercial radio by looking at the ways in which mobility is altering the relationship between commercial radio and music fans. The specific research objectives of this study are threefold: (1) to better understand the increasing role of the mobile industry and of wireless delivery technologies as purveyors of music; (2) to explore their repercussions on the viability of commercial radio; and (3) to identify the appearance of effects on the habits and expectations of radio listeners.

Streszczenie:
The role currently being played by Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in ensuring the accuracy, timeliness and integrity of audit reports cannot be stressed too strongly. This thesis, relates to a study on assessing the current and potential impact of ICT on auditing in providing useful information for a wide range of users. Using a triangulation of interview and questionnaire techniques, the study covers the activities of auditors working in the 'big4' accounting firms, some small and medium sized accounting firms, one of the UK's 'big?' banks and some government agencies. This exploratory study is privileged to be one of the first to shed more light on the current state of affairs regarding the extent of use of ICT tools and techniques by both internal and external auditors. Also, the study has been able to assess the impact these tools and techniques are currently having on auditors and the organisations they work for by identifying the main benefits and drawbacks ICT has brought to the profession. As a result of its findings, this research is able to identify and discuss potential areas of the audit profession that could benefit from further utilisation of ICT. This study is the first to empirically assess the current and potential use of Continuous Online Auditing within the UK auditing profession comprising both public and commercial establishments. Similarly, the study is able to break new ground in accounting research by exploring the impact audit automation is having on auditor independence and the audit expectations-performance gap. Above all, the production uf C::l ih..~~-i8y~r~d iTiodei (an integration of contingency, socia-technical systems and structuration theories) for a comprehensive understanding of ICT impact on audit remains a major highlight of the study. The model advocates that the use of leT in audits is a function of certain contingent factors that determine an optimal mix of human skills and technological capabilities, which would lead to changes in the nature of auditors' roles and outputs and audit organisations' structures. Indeed, this road has been rough and turbulent in every way but at the end of it, I have the cause to say all praise is due to ALLAH. I do acknowledge that His bounties on me are certainly immeasurable. My thanks go to my supeNisors, Mr. Ashok Patel and Dr. Peter Scott for their guidance and support right from the start of the programme till its end. Streszczenie:
This thesis presents the design and development of a complete receiver system for a conversion project, which replaces the commercial receiver of a telecommunication antenna with a cryogenically cooled radio astronomy receiver. Part of the project is to explore the synergy between radio astronomy and deep-space communications, which share many technical requirements, but also have technical conflicts. Therefore, this thesis attempts to solve some of these technological issues and provides a design for a receiver system, where radio astronomy and communication applications can successfully share the same hardware and infrastructure. The receiver system employs a FPGA-based digital signal processing backend, which enables the instrument to be used in three different operational modes, single-dish observation, interferometer observation, and deep-space communication. The architecture of the receiver system includes a novel technical solution to stabilise gain drift when used in single-dish observation mode. Two stabilisation methods are discussed in detail, and their performance is verified by measurements. The white-noise stabilisation approach uses a modulated reference noise signal and the continuous-wave stabilisation approach uses a narrowband reference signal to track the change in amplification. Both stabilisation methods showed excellent performance and are implemented to stabilise the gain drift of the receiver system. A number of analogue signal components were specially designed for the receiver system in order to meet the requirements of the conversion project. One of these components is the compact quad-ridged orthomode transducer, which provides the transmission between the feed horn and the coaxial cables. Its design uses a novel approach to reduce significantly the transition length, while retaining a wide operational bandwidth. Finally we present the design of the complete receiver system, which includes the development work and verification of the components that were built for this project.

The wireless market has experienced a remarkable development and growth since the introduction of the first modern mobile phone systems, with a steady increase in the number of subscribers, new application areas, and higher data rates. As mobile phones and wireless connectivity have become consumer mass markets, the prime goal of the IC manufacturers is to provide low-cost solutions. The power amplifier (PA) is a key building block in all RF transmitters. To lower the costs and allow full integration of a complete radio System-on-Chip (SoC), it is desirable to integrate the entire transceiver and the PA in a single CMOS chip. While digital circuits benefit from the technology scaling, it is becoming harder to meet the stringent requirements on linearity, output power, bandwidth, and efficiency at lower supply voltages in traditional PA architectures. This has recently triggered extensive studies to investigate the impact of different efficiency enhancement and linearization techniques, like polar modulation and outphasing, in nanometer CMOS technologies. This thesis addresses the potential of integrating linear and power-efficient PAs in nanometer CMOS technologies at GHz frequencies. In total eight amplifiers have been designed - two linear Class-A PAs, two switched Class-E PAs, and four Class-D PAs linearized in outphasing configurations. Based on the outphasing PAs, amplifier models and predistorters have been developed and evaluated for uplink (terminal) and downlink (base station) signals. The two linear Class-A PAs with LC-based and transformer-based input and interstage matching networks were designed in a 65nm CMOS technology for 2.4GHz 802.11n WLAN. For a 72.2Mbit/s 64-QAM 802.11n OFDM signal with PAPR of 9.1dB, both PAs fulfilled the toughest EVM requirement in the standard at average output power levels of +9.4dBm and +11.6dBm, respectively. The two PAs were among the first PAs implemented in a 65nm CMOS technology. The two Class-E PAs, intended for DECT and Bluetooth, were designed in 130nm CMOS and operated at low ‘digital’ supply voltages. The PAs delivered +26.4 and +22.7dBm at 1.5V and 1.0V supply voltages with PAE of 30% and 36%, respectively. The Bluetooth PA was based on thin oxide devices and the performance degradation over time for a high level of oxide stress was evaluated. The four Class-D outphasing PAs were designed in 65nm, 90nm, and 130nm CMOS technologies. The first outphasing design was based on a Class-D stage utilizing a cascode configuration, driven by an AC-coupled low-voltage driver, to allow a 5.5V supply voltage in a 65nm CMOS technology without excessive device voltage stress. Two on-chip transformers combined the outputs of four Class-D stages. At 1.95GHz the PA delivered +29.7dBm with a PAE of 26.6%. The 3dB bandwidth was  1.6GHz, representing state-of-the-art bandwidth for CMOS Class-D RF PAs. After one week of continuous operation, no performance degradation was noticed. The second design was based on the same Class-D stage, but combined eight amplifier stages by four on-chip transformers in 130nm CMOS to achieve a state-of-the-art output power of +32dBm for CMOS Class-D RF PAs. Both designs met the ACLR and modulation requirements without predistortion when amplifying uplink WCDMA and 20MHz LTE signals. The third outphasing design was based on two low-power Class-D stages in 90nm CMOS featuring a harmonic suppression technique, cancelling the third harmonic in the output spectrum which also improves drain efficiency. The proposed Class-D stage creates a voltage level of VDD/2 from a single supply voltage to shape the drain voltage, uses only digital circuits and eliminates the short-circuit current present in inverter-based Class-D stages. A single Class-D stage delivered +5.1dBm at 1.2V supply voltage with a drain efficiency and PAE of 73% and 59%, respectively. Two Class-D stages were connected to a PCB transformer to create an outphasing amplifier, which was linear enough to amplify EDGE and WCDMA signals without the need for predistortion. The fourth outphasing design was based on two Class-D stages  connected to an on-chip transformer with peak power of +10dBm. It was used in the development of a behavioral model structure and model-based phase-only predistortion method suitable for outphasing amplifiers to compensate for both amplitude and phase mismatches. In measurements for EDGE and WCDMA signals, the predistorter improved the margin to the limits of the spectral mask and the ACLR by more than 12dB. Based on a similar approach, an amplifier model and predistortion method were developed and evaluated for the +32dBm Class-D PA design using a downlink WCDMA signal, where the ACLR was improved by 13.5dB. A least-squares phase predistortion method was developed and evaluated for the +30dBm Class-D PA design using WCDMA and LTE uplink signals, where the ACLR was improved by approximately 10dB.

An increasing number of older adults must continue working, which requires that they maintain their competencies and work skills, including use of mobile technology (MT). However, little is known about older adult adoption of MT in relation to work. This study used Rogers's diffusion of innovation theory and Davis's technology acceptance model as a framework. The purpose of this exploratory sequential mixed methods study was to examine the experiences of older adults' who adopted MT in the emergency communications (EC) field. Participants came from an emergency services LinkedIn group. Data sources included surveys completed by 85 respondents and interviews of a subset of 10 of the respondents. Phase 1 included survey analysis to develop descriptive statistics on the participants' placement in Rogers's stages of adoption, their perceptions of the usefulness, and the ease of use. Phase 2 included analysis of in-depth interviews, coding for themes and patterns. Survey results indicated that both perceived usefulness and ease of use affect the adoption of MT by older adult users in the EC field. The results of the interviews identified the usefulness and ease of use as factors for the participants. The social implications for employers include a deeper understanding of the specific factors that impact the adoption of MT by older adults. This study provides employers with a deeper understanding of the adoption of MT by older adults so they can develop stronger plans to help their older adults adopt mobile technology.

Streszczenie:
There is a dearth of decision-support models or frameworks to aid managers in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry in uniformly assessing the key factors in the decision to standardize innovative technologies. Making the proper decision is consequential and potentially fraught with risks for the firm such as competitive exposure, high expenditures with inadequate returns, restrictive inbound or outbound patent licensing obligations, and related complications. This study presents a framework to guide managers in the ICT industry in assessing the factors that inform the decision to participate in the development of technology standards. Using multi-criteria decision analysis and judgment data from panels of experts, a robust model is developed that comprehends the essential criteria and outcomes within the context of computer interconnect technologies. The resultant, generalizable model is validated against the case of the extant Universal Serial Bus (USB) interconnect standard and found to be congruent with the assessment of the experts. Scholarship on technology standards development is rich and multifaceted--spanning numerous streams of inquiry. This research contextualizes technology standardization within the economic, strategic, organizational, and legal perspectives. The resultant model demonstrates that strategic planning is regarded by the experts as the principal driver in the decision to participate in a technology standardization effort. Furthermore, the primacy of commitment and leadership within the standards-setting organization is unambiguously established through rigorous quantitative analysis. The proposed model verifies that the firm's desire to align its product roadmap to the emerging standard is the chief criterion in the decision to contribute to the standards development effort. Other criteria of high interest include the leveraging of network externalities to glean disruptive trends within the ecosystem, the exploration of opportunities to expand the total available market for the firm, and the availability and terms of IP licenses. Sensitivity analysis affirms the overall predictive strength and robustness of the model and its widespread applicability. Future research on model expansion and application to other technologies, as well as the development of uniform patent valuation methods will further enrich the knowledge base.

With the advent of smart phone technologies, the healthcare industry finds it challenging to keep up with technology demands. In the medical domain, patients are experiencing longer wait times for medical treatment. A basis of dissatisfaction with healthcare, often observed by patients, is the amount of time they wait during a visit. The wait times have a greater delay within medical emergency facilities. Current medical wait time applications may encourage patients to be seen quickly but does not necessarily offer quality care or other aspects of their visits. The amount of time a patient experiences in an emergency facility could influence the patient's perspective and could be contingent upon other qualities. We sought to investigate the association between patient perception of the hospital, time to reach the hospital, patient wait time, patient reviews, and average service time of various North Carolina hospitals using product moment correlation analysis. Analyses were performed of the various hospitals based upon each parameter. In this thesis, we propose a smart phone based service to optimize travel time to a medical facility utilizing patient wait time, service time, time to reach the hospital, patient reviews, and patient perception of the facility and Global Positioning System (GPS) data. Various hospitals were compared ranking in according to the parameters individually, relative to other hospitals in neighboring counties and cities. Each constraint is assigned a weight to be used in the overall ranking of the hospital. We have established relationships about correlation parameters. The parameters were assessed to determine correlations between any two given parameters.

Streszczenie:
Context, Text and Reader is an investigation of the way that members of a young audience use magazine and television advertisements to help them develop an understanding of technology and technological development. The thesis' main argument is that understanding the relationship between context, text and reader is the key to understanding how an audience uses advertising images to help it come to terms with the world. A combination of methodologies is employed, including semiotic analysis, content analysis, attitude surveys and group discussions. The study is divided into four main sections. The first, Context, provides a framework into which the empirical findings can be loosely fitted. Two important areas are looked at: the changes taking place in what is often referred to as the communications revolution and secondly, the role that advertising plays in the generation of social and cultural meaning. The second section, Text, includes a semiotic analysis of selected television and magazine advertisements for technology products. This is followed by a review of a number of published content analysis studies and then by a discussion of two empirical studies of television and magazine advertisements using a content analysis methodology. The third section moves on to investigate the reader's response to technology. The findings of three empirical investigations are outlined and discussed. These are an exploration of attitudes to, firstly, technology in general; secondly, a television commercial for a domestic personal computer and thirdly a commercial for a television set. The final section of the thesis, Context, Text and Reader, brings together the three different elements of the study with, first of all, an outline of the issues involved in what are called "Reception Studies", then by an analysis of two group discussions of the television commercials for a domestic personal computer and a television set, used earlier in the study.

My dissertation examines women's unique techniques and cultures of communication at the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp in Newbury, England between 1982-1985. Often referred to by participants as one of the "last movements before the internet," I look at Greenham as a site through which to think about how activists' communication and cultural practices in the 1980s shaped activist uses of the worldwide web and other new media technologies central to contemporary struggles. I argue that social movement media such as videos, newsletters, postcards, songs and songbooks both create movement culture at the time of their production, and carry movement ideas and their infrastructures into the future. A story told orally, a songbook, a manifesto, a recorded interview, a picture of a mass demonstration, all circulate across time and space. Through this movement, ideas and artifacts are transformed and incorporated as different people encounter and make meaning out of these cultural texts in different ways.

In the current literature on productivity and economic growth, many studies have explored the relationship between information and communications technology (ICT) and growth. In these studies, ICT capital stock is treated as an individual input in the production process that contributes to output growth. In fact, ICT is found to be a key driver of productivity growth in the developed economies. However, few empirical studies deal with China which has in recent years become one of the world's largest ICT markets and production centres. The lack of empirical work in this field contrasts sharply with the wealth of literature which presents background and descriptive studies of China's high technology sectors that include the telecommunications, the computer and the Internet sectors. This dissertation attempts to fill the void in the literature by examining the role of ICT in China's economy over the past two decades. It aims to develop a framework which emphasizes ICT as a production factor and apply it to interpret China's economic growth. The dissertation contributes to the empirical literature by focusing on the following core aspects underlying the linkage between ICT and economic growth. First, it attempts to estimate the size of China's ICT capital stock using the perpetual inventory method. Second, based on such estimates, the dissertation measures the contribution of ICT to China's economic growth by means of a production function model that segregates ICT from all other forms of capital. Third, the dissertation examines the impact of ICT on technical efficiency in China's regions by applying a stochastic frontier model. Lastly, the dissertation looks at the demand aspect of the ICT industry by estimating and projecting demand for ICT services, namely, the telecommunications and computer markets in China. According to this study, ICT capital is found to be a positive driver for the Chinese economy, and is responsible for about 25% of the country's economic growth, although the percentage varies at different periods. ICT capital is also found to have a positive and significant impact on technical efficiency in the Chinese regions. However, the disparity between the coastal and inland regions in terms of technical efficiency scores is found to be very wide, due to the bulk of ICT investment going into the municipal cities and coastal provinces. It is also found that China may be facing the beginning of a period of strong productivity growth driven by increased investment in ICT, especially innovative investment. Furthermore, projections of demand show that the majority of Chinese citizens will have access to a fixed-line telephone or the mobile phone in five years from now, while about half of the Chinese population is expected to use the computer by 2010.

Gu, Chao. "Design of low-cost smart antennas for wireless communications". Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/60094/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Traditional smart antennas are complicated, bulky, power hungry and expensive, as they require a large number of radio frequency (RF)/microwave phase shifters, and trans-mit/receive (T/R) modules. For wide applications in civilian wireless communications, it is important to investigate novel designs of electronically beam-steerable smart antennas which feature compact size, low power, and low cost. This dissertation presents novel designs and implementation of low-cost smart anten-nas for wireless communications. Four different designs of low-cost smart antennas have been presented, and these smart antennas can be categorized into two different types: The first type is electronically beam-switching antenna based on the concept of electrically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR). The design utilizes the strong mutual coupling between the driven element and reconfigurable parasitic elements to electronically steer the beams. A polarization-reconfigurable square patch is employed as the driven element which is surrounded by reconfigurable parasitic dipoles. The antenna does not require any micro-wave phase shifters and is shown to be able to achieve electronic beam switching and polarization reconfigurability by electronically controlling the PIN diodes. The second type is an electronically beam-switching antenna using active frequency selective surfaces (FSS). Omnidirectional feeders are employed to illuminate reconfigurable FSS cylinders which consist of a number of unit cells loaded by PIN diode or varactors. By controlling the DC bias of individual columns of the FSS cylinder, directive beams can be swept across the entire azimuth plane. Based on different active FSS unit cells, three different low-cost smart antennas have been designed, including a dual-band electronically beam-switching antenna, a 3-D beam scanning antenna, and an electronically beam-switching antenna with continuous frequency tuning. In this thesis, in order to evaluate the antenna performance, comprehensive full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulations are carried out using commercial software. Furthermore, prototypes are fabricated and tested to validate the design concepts. Good agreement between the simulation and measurement results is achieved, and demonstrates that the smart antennas designed in this thesis have advantages of low cost and low power, thus rendering them promising for applications in wireless communications.

Streszczenie:
Technology plays an increasingly important role in modern health care. This thesis presents an approach to usability evaluation of mobile information and communications technologies designed for diabetes patients&rsquo
use in their daily lives. According to our study conducted on 60 diabetes patients, several important findings were obtained. Fifty nine (98.3%) diabetes patients were highly satisfied with the mobile health technology and expressed that they would use it, and found the measured values reliable. For 57 (95%) diabetes patients
measuring, checking and accessing the blood glucose level easily anytime and anywhere were very important. Fifty six (93.3%) said that they would wish to send their blood glucose levels to their physicians via e-mail. When participants were asked to provide a decision on future health care, predominate number of participants said they would change their lifestyle rather than visit a doctor regardless of their blood glucose level. In conclusion, little is known about such effects of mobile information and communications technologies in self-management care situations. It is clear that usability studies in the field are more difficult to conduct than laboratory evaluations. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to further evaluate these initial findings.

Streszczenie:
Arrays of micron sized light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) allow high-frequency spatial and temporal modulation of an optical signal. Contacting micro-LED arrays to complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) electronics provides a mm-chip-scale device with a high level of control over the optical emission through digital input. Such devices enable novel forms of optical communication and imaging to be investigated. This thesis first demonstrates the use of CMOS controlled micro-LEDs in multi-level intensity modulated optical communications. By generating signals in a discrete fashion with weighted groups of pixels in an array, the non-linearity issues of single LED elements can be avoided and the device functions as a digital-to-light converter. Pulse amplitude modulation and discrete orthogonal frequency division multiplexing were performed, yielding data rates up to 200 Mb/s, and spectral efficiencies up to 3.96 bits/s/Hz. A novel form of optical communications is introduced where data is sent through modulation of the temporal correlation of a pulsed optical signal. Utilising single-photon detection at the receiver enables transmission at low received power levels, on the order of picowatts. While data rates prove to be modest, the scheme is robust to both constant and modulated background signals. Additionally, the implementation requires only simple semiconductor components, exhibits low electrical power consumption, and has been demonstrated under power from a nanosatellite simulation testbed. The pulse correlation approach also presents opportunities in imaging. Received signals are dependent on optical power; therefore, if relative emitted power from multiple transmitters is known, information on the reectance or absorption of an intermediate material can be obtained. This potentially enables colour or hyperspectral imaging with single-photon detectors by temporally structuring light sources. Proof-of-principle experiments have been performed using commercially available LEDs of 10 different wavelengths and printed colour targets.

Streszczenie:
The work described in this thesis is aimed at exploring the possibility of optically integrating an OTDM transmitter operating at 4X10Gb/s on an appropriate substrate. It has been shown that such an OTDM transmitter system could be integrated on III-V semiconductor quantum well (QW) substrates if the design of the substrate, the choice of fabrication techniques and the design of the devices are carefully considered. Suitable device structures for the three main kinds of devices involved in OTDM transmitters, namely light source, optical multiplexers (couplers) and optical modulators, have been discussed. Significant progress regarding these aspects, both theoretical and experimental, has been achieved. In this work, it has been intended to investigate all the devices from the integration point of view. This has been reflected in many aspects in the device design and fabrication process. Integration has always been a very important factor to consider in the determination of substrate material structure, device configuration, waveguide structure and fabrication techniques. As a result, the devices developed in this project are suitable for the proposed purpose of an integrated OTDM transmitter system. Investigation into integration techniques has also been carried out. The most important was to introduce bandgap difference on a semiconductor QW material. IFVD technique is studied and produced some encouraging results such as the extended cavity SRL, which integrates an active section with a passive MMI coupler. Vertically coupled waveguide structures have also been invstigated in an attempt to produce extended cavity lasers. The design considerations of extended cavity lasers employing this waveguide structure have been discussed.

In this thesis we develop a mathematical model of the physical layerfor an in-body nano-machine (NM) communication. The purpose isfinding what modulation and detection schemes are suitable for applicationin the body and discovering what factors limit the feasiblecommunication distance. Inside the body, the NMs use small antennasoperating in the THz frequency spectrum. They have limited energyresources and low computational power and must fulfill their task ina challenging environment with large absorption losses. By employingon-off-keying pulse modulation and small integrating receiver circuits,it is possible to consume minimal energy while being able communicateover small distances of a few mms. This is shown througha simulation of a point to point nano-communication link. We alsodemonstrate how connecting several NMs in a network and employingamplify-and-forward relaying can facilitate communication overlarger distances. The final analysis shows that communication insidethe body is possible over short distances, a few mms at most, but transmittinga signal strong enough to connect aNMnetwork to an externalterminal may prove challenging.
Nanomaskinerna använder mycket små antenner i terahertzspektrumet.

There is currently a glaring absence of critical discourse surrounding the integration of information communications technologies in schools. Despite a growing body of literature showing that technology has both advantages and disadvantages, schools are incorporating ICT as if it were a panacea for educational and societal ills. This deification of ICT is based on utilitarian concerns and spiritual yearnings. The first chapter situates the author and outlines how the larger technology metanarrative has a mythic status. Chapter two situates the appeal to utilitarian and spiritual values in the wider culture. The final chapter examines how these issues are played out in the school system. The author concludes with a summary and raises areas for further investigation, along with suggestions for change.

Innovations can be the single source of industry's growth. How innovations themselves grow or decline also has a direct affect on the health of the industry in which they play. This thesis looks at fiber optic technologies and their impact on the communications industry. The relative importance of the fiber optic technology is evidenced by its speed and effectiveness in shaping the communications infrastructure in a short period of the recent years. Advent of this relatively new technology, coupled with deregulation policies and the changes in the nature of the network traffic, has caused several disruptions to the communications value chain. Effects of these disruptions and their eventualities are the focus of this thesis. To study these effects, this thesis looks in detail at the interplay of various life cycle stages of innovations and industry. The innovation stages are classified as: Fluid, Transitional, and Specific. Each of these three stages affects the dynamics value chain of the industry in different ways. The characteristics of each stage are studied in detail. There are few innovations that can bring about an impact as extensive as the advent of fiber optics communications has. The review of the processes in the evolution of innovation from birth to potential re- birth provides great insights on the industry's life cycle. The study is based on current theories on the subject of management of technology applied to the communications sector. Most examples and data are based on the telecommunication networks in North America; the timeline of the study is the decade from mid 1990's to present. In closing various strategies in treading the evolution of innovation are described. The evolution life cycle
(cont.) model can be used in several other industries for managing innovation and technologies. Several related research topics are described, and citations for further suggested readings on the topic are provided.

Streszczenie:

I returned to my hometown and recorded Mongolian folk music—Mongolian Long Song and Mongolian Throat Singing. I wanted to combine technology and traditional folk music and write an electronic piece based on Mongolian vocal materials. I used what I’ve sampled, manipulated the sounds, composed the music, gathered the videos together and created this multimedia piece—On Horseback. The names of the four movements—Sand, Cloud, Water, and Fire—are four elements that I chose to represent the lifestyle in Inner Mongolia.

This thesis covers the journey of how I created this piece. I’ve explored many variations of technology such as sound sampling, mixing, and video editing. I’ve also gained the chance to bring traditional Mongolian folk vocal music out of my hometown and present it in my own work.

Streszczenie:
Various compact and packaging-adaptive antennas have been designed for practical wireless communications systems such as global system of mobile communications (GSM), Bluetooth Industrial-Scientific-Medical (ISM) devices, IEEE802.11a WLAN, and Local Multipoint Distribution Systems (LMDS) applications. First, compact stacked patch antennas using LTCC multilayer technology have been presented. A set of design rules is established for the purpose of designing optimized bandwidth compact antennas on LTCC multilayer substrates. To verify its effectiveness, the proposed design rules are applied to three emerging wireless bands. The return loss and the impedance bandwidth are optimized for all three bands. A maximum bandwidth of 7% can be achieved for an antenna operating in the LMDS band. Furthermore, folded shorted patch antennas (SPAs) are designed to significantly reduce the resonant frequency of a standard patch antenna. The design methodology of this structure starts with a conventional half-wave and through a series of procedures, evolves into a smaller, lambda/8 wavelength resonant length structure. Upon varying the height of the lower patch, the resonant length can be reduced to lambda/16. A comparison between a folded SPA and a standard SPA validates the folding technique proposed in this document. The folded SPA is applied to the 2.4 GHz ISM band. The measured results are in good agreement with simulated results. This antenna can be implemented into 3D packages using multilayer laminates such as LTCC or LCP.
