In the course of learning a foreign language, learners frequently encounter communication problems caused by a lack of linguistic resources. Learners use communication strategies (CSs) to overcome these problems. CSs help students to fill gaps when their language skills are limited. CSs also allow students to overcome challenges they face while communicating and help them negotiate meaning with their partners. S.P. Corder defines a CS as - "a systematic technique employed by a speaker to express his (or her) meaning when faced with some difficulty."

Streszczenie:
Evolving communication technology, the increased volume of information needed by businesses, and the intensified competitive environment have made internal company communication more critical to business success. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies used by managers and leaders of 3 law firms in the Commonwealth of Virginia for assessing the effectiveness of their organization's internal communication channels. The participating firms were recognized by their peers as being exceptionally well-managed. Data from interviews and company documents were analyzed through the conceptual lens of the channel expansion theory and the use of software coding to identify patterns and themes. Three important themes emerged: informal assessment strategies, indirect assessment strategies, and efficient versus timely assessments. The first theme suggested the effectiveness of an informal assessment strategy, depending on the size and complexity of the organization. The second theme reflected the effectiveness of an indirect assessment for organizations that lack the resources to support a more direct and specific assessment process. The third theme reflected the participants' perceptions of informal and indirect assessments may be more efficient, the feedback from the assessments are often less timely. Managers may consider these themes in formulating communication policies. The findings of this case study may have implications for positive social and economic change. Small professional service firms, such as legal firms, provide important services to individuals, families, and businesses in their community.

Managing employee engagement is critical to the success of an organization, but 85% of managers struggle with engaging employees. The purpose of this single-case study was to explore effective communication strategies within an organization and determine how managers used these strategies to increase employee engagement, productivity, and organizational effectiveness. Data were collected from organizational documents, observations, and semistructured interviews with 6 managers of a corporation located in the midwestern United States. All participants were working full-time for at least 3 years, had a managerial title, and were responsible for departmental communication. Moustakas's modified van Kaam method was used for data analysis. Communication theory provided the conceptual framework for the study. Three themes that emerged from the participants' interviews, observations, and data analysis were coaching employees, motivation, and consistency in communication. The findings of this study may impact positive social change by improving the organizational competitive environment through engagement in the community and society. The implications for positive social change include the potential for managers with direct reports to improve their understanding of the causes of engagement and disengagement, internal communication strategies that cause disengagement, and the benefits of implementing engagement strategies. The results of this study may provide managers with knowledge about employee engagement strategies used to improve productivity and organizational effectiveness within the industry. Community relationships could also improve as a result of effective communication.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
Child obesity is generally accepted to be one of the most negative trends in the world that we live in. Since marketing for food products has been recognized to be pushing this trend forward, it is hereby presented some alternatives that prove that marketing may be a solution instead of a problem. For this purpose, an analysis on the intrinsic qualities and consumer perceptions of Compal and Um Bongo juices was produced. An experiment was made with 58 children from 4 to 10 years old, in order to evaluate the possibility of attitude change, based on Petty and Cacioppo’s Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion (ELM). In these tests the subjects were initially submitted to a blind profile of the juices, delivering only the emotional attributes currently being communicated by Compal. Then, children’s perceptions regarding the product were analyzed through their drawings. Thereafter, they were exposed to an intervention phase which consisted of rationally communicating the nutritious benefits of the product and other nutrition-related concepts, and we finally evaluated their perceptions post-test using drawing techniques. There is evidence that children in this age range will change their perceptions regarding the product when a rational communication is applied.

Streszczenie:
This thesis proposes a joint spatial diversity scheme in MIMO systems in order to improve the transmission reliability of the wireless links, thereby to extend the transmission range and increase the information throughput. Cyclic delay diversity (CDD) and antenna selection are employed here for their low complexity, high flexibility, no spectrum efficiency reduction and high compatibility with many existing standards. A bit error performance bound for CDD system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and convolutional coding in multipath Rayleigh fading channel is generated, which renders a fundamental understanding of the mechanism of CDD and can be used instructively for CDD system design. A transmit cyclic delay diversity and receive antenna selection (TCDD/RAS) system is proposed here to achieve a performance gain with lower additional complexity and no data rate reduction compared with a transmit orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) system, which is combined with the optimum receive antenna selection scheme. A hybrid system with both OSTBC and CDD in the transmitter and antenna selection in the receiver is also derived to avoid the high complexity requirement and data rate degradation of the OSTBC system as well as the performance loss of the CDD system. A receive antenna selection criterion for the TCDD/RAS system based on the previous performance analysis results is defined, however it demands high computational complexity. Therefore a much simpler and faster selection rule, named maximum minimum post-processing SNR criterion, is generated for the TCDD/RAS system in flat fading channels and another maximum group minimum post-processing SNR selection principle is developed in frequency selective channels. Both of these two selection rules achieve higher diversity gains with lower additional complexity compared with the traditional norm and capacity selection rules. Two relay systems embedded with the TCDD/RAS scheme are also constructed: the MIMO relay system and the cooperative relay system. The joint diversity scheme in the MIMO relay system obtains a higher diversity gain than in the cooperative relay system. Moreover, these two relay systems could be combined to a system with multiple cooperative relay nodes on which multiple antennas are deployed depending on the practical requirement in the future wireless communication systems.

This study investigated the relationship between Communication Strategies (CS) use and L2 oral development. In order to reach this goal, three speech samples of each one of 30 L2 learners of English were collected. Participants were divided into three groups of 10 learners each, according to their level of proficiency # pre-intermediate, intermediate and advanced. Participants' oral fluency was assessed by means of speech rate (Lenon, 1990). L2 speech production was elicited by means of three narrative tasks in three different sessions. Data analysis revealed a common group of CS across sessions and across proficiency levels. Besides, it indicated that the relationship between CS use and L2 oral fluency, as measured by the speech rate, is not statistically significant. The analyses further showed a significant statistical correlation among speech rate measures in sessions 1, 2 and 3 in the pre-intermediate and intermediate groups, thus indicating a homogeneous oral behavior among these participants across sessions. To explain the few instances of significant statistical correlations between speech rate and types of CS, it is suggested that due to the multitude of factors affecting L2 fluency, other aspects of speech production need to be analysed, such as grammatical accuracy and complexity. In addition, the nature of tasks and their cognitive demands might have contributed to learners' apparently limited oral improvement.

The aim of this study is to investigate how teachers use strategies to promote interaction. It is our ambition to find out how teachers perceive interaction and how they think their students may benefit from their use of strategies. The sociocultural theory on learning is used as a theoretical framework for this study. This framework aligns with our research questions as well as the prior research that we present. Prior research suggeststhat in order for the students to develop a foreign language they need to be provided with an authentic context and a variety of opportunities to interact. We conducted three semi-structured interviews with qualified teachers teaching at primary school level. Our gathered results are presented under four different themes connected to our research questions. The results show that these teachers reported using strategies mostly as scaffolding and were somewhat unaware of how to define a strategy. Also, the teachers’ perception of interaction did not always align with prior research. Moreover, research suggests that students need to be taught communicative strategies explicitly in order to implement these when solving problems. Our results show that in order for this to happen the teachers need to use strategies more frequently during lessons. The major conclusions of this study are that the educators we interviewed, did not focus on using strategies as much as researchers suggest theyshould. Also, there was a misconception of what defines as interaction and we got the idea that the educators thought that planning lessons with a focus on interaction and strategies were more time consuming than using the English textbook.

Streszczenie:
Drawing on the theoretical framework of crisis communications, risk communications, and food choice literatures, this study explores the dynamics of food scare crises within an Irish context. The consumer reactions following these risk events present an opportunity to examine risk information processing within consumer behaviour. Utilising a realist research position, initial focus group research was conducted, which drove the main phase of the research, which consisted of in-depth consumer interviews. All of these interviews were transcribed and analysed using qualitative research software. Through this extensive exploratory research several key findings emerged which advance our understanding of crises and food scares. Risk profiles of Irish consumers were identified from their beliefs surrounding food category risk. Furthermore, an extensive risk information processing framework was identified, incorporating risk profiles, determinants of risk, and behavioural consequences. Food scares exhibited wave-like characteristics in which risk is amplified through an amalgam of factors, and then subsided to a natural state of equilibrium. The intensity of perceived risk is temporally linked, in that the level of perceived risk reaches its zenith in the immediate aftermath of public risk disclosure, which is intensified through greater media scrutiny and social discourse surrounding the food risk. Subsequently the level of perceived risk subsides amongst certain consumer populations due to lack of media and social discourse on the risk issue. In addition, key consumer expectations of crisis communication responses were identified, in terms of the form and content of the response. Moreover, the evidence indicated that exposure to past food crises created inoculation effects. Consumers perceived that industry stakeholders invoke proactive preventative measures to eliminate the potential for risk reoccurrence, by enhancing their safety systems, thereby reducing future risk potential. A key conclusion of the research is that organisations need to hetter understand the dynamics of food scares, so as to develop effective crisis communication responses, and long-term effective risk communications. As consumers are deluged with risk messages on a consistent basis, particularly concerning food consumption, organisations need a greater insight into how risk information processing occurs. The findings of the research help broaden our understanding of food scares, and have implications for the management of crisis events within other industries. They provide a critical insight into how these events are perceived, which have implications for marketing and management. Moreover it demonstrates that there are indeed opportunities from crises, to improve safety protocols to prevent reoccurrence, and to solidify bonds of trust with the consumer, through ongoing communications dialogue.

Doutoramento em Biologia
The present work aimed to contribute to understand the public perception of biodiversity, to find patterns of biodiversity representation in communication pathways and to promote strategies to modify stereotypes towards biodiversity, creating a more aware and active public through environmental education and citizen science projects. Four studies were developed under the following subjects: 1) understanding young adults preferences about animals, 2) comprehend how biodiversity is portrayed in children’s books from the Portuguese National Reading Plan, 3) evaluating the impact of an environmental education project on the public awareness of ponds and associated biodiversity, and 4) understanding the potential of a Citizen Science approach to map ponds in the Portuguese territory. The results from the various studies showed a limited and distorted public view and awareness about living beings. This was found to agree with the biodiversity portray patterns in children´s trade books, which seem to constitute important sources of information about biodiversity during childhood. The present work also described the implementation and evaluation of a resourceful environmental education strategy that was able to change the public attitudes towards ponds and associated biodiversity, especially the amphibians. Finally, it also showed that the implementation of a Citizen Science action was able to engage citizens in pond conservation actions and create the first map of ponds in Portugal through the use of Volunteer Geographic Information mechanisms. The work used innovative methodologies of data analysis and project impact evaluation that can be useful to future research in science communication.

In natural and manmade disasters, inadequate strategies to recover from satellite communication (SATCOM) failures can affect the ability of humanitarian organizations to provide timely assistance to the affected populations. This single case study explored strategies used by network administrators (NAs) to recover from SATCOM failures in humanitarian operations. The study population were NAs in Asia, the Middle East, Central Africa, East Africa, and West Africa. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 9 NAs and an analysis of network statistics for their locations. The resource-based view was used as the conceptual framework for the study. Using inductive analysis, 3 themes emerged from coding and triangulation: redundancy of equipment, knowledge transfer, and the use of spare parts to service the SATCOM infrastructure. The findings showed that the organization's use of knowledge, and collaboration among NAs and nontechnical staff improved the organization's ability to recover from SATCOM failures. The implication of this study for social change was the reduced cost of satellite services due to the efficient use of the bandwidth. These savings can be channeled into the purchase of vaccines, shelter, and the improvement in the quality of water and sanitation for displaced persons in humanitarian disasters, which improve the organization's delivery of humanitarian services to the affected populations in the disaster.

Millennials, who by 2024 will make up approximately 34% of the U.S. workforce, will play a critical role in organizational strategies and productivity, as will the supervisors who manage them. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the intergenerational communication strategies that Generation X supervisors used to motivate and engage high performing millennials in the workplace. The framework for this study was Mannheim's generation theory and the 2-factor theory of motivation by Herzberg, Mausner, and Snyderman. Data were collected from parks and recreation employees in the southeastern region of the United States, including 4 Generation X supervisors who completed semistructured interviews and 2 millennial cohort focus groups. Data were transcribed, coded, and validated through member checking and methodological triangulation. The 4 themes identified were culture and socialization, relationship building and intergenerational connectedness, employee growth and development, and rewards and recognition. The findings of this research may benefit millennials, frontline supervisors, parks and recreation agencies, and leaders in other organizations by providing an understanding of generational needs. The data presented in this study may support positive social change by showing that supervisors and millennial employees can build high quality relationships within their organizations, enabling those organizations to support the communities they serve.

Managers spend 75% of their time actively communicating with employees. Effective leadership communication is fundamental to employee job satisfaction. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how communication strategies that government agency leaders use may motivate greater employee job satisfaction. Twenty employees of a government office in Florida were the general population sample. The motivational language theory helped explore the nature of job satisfaction by focusing on leadership and employee communication strategies. Leadership communication influences employee motivation through incorporating 3 categories of utterances: empathetic (illocutionary) language, direction-giving (perlocutionary) language, and meaning-making (locutionary) language. The Van Manen selective approach helped code and the Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method helped analyze the participants' transcribed face-to-face interviews. Member checks and data saturation ensured the findings trustworthiness. The findings developed from coding and analyzing data led to the discovery of 4 themes: empathetic language, direction-giving language, meaning-making language, and job satisfaction. The 2 most important themes, direction-giving language and meaning-making language, help motivate job satisfaction by explaining how leadership advice, clear instructions, and leadership stories pertaining to primary events from the agency's past provide direction and a feeling of job satisfaction. Social implications of this study include creating and improving organizational communication best practices and guidelines to help leaders communicate information effectively and to motivate regional governmental organization employee job satisfaction.

DevOps is a collection of practices used to automate theprocesses between the development and the operations teams. Thereexist various barriers between these two teams as they are traditionallyseparate. As a result, software organizations implement DevOpsto mitigate these challenges. At the same time, communication challengesarise while implementing DevOps as it is not a simple task. The aim of the research is to investigate the communicationchallenges faced by developers while implementing DevOps andderiving strategies to overcome these challenges. The overall researchgoal is to find out how communication takes place in a software organization/multinational company, the communication challenges faced during the implementation of DevOps and finally the strategies followedto overcome these challenges. An empirical study has been conducted using SystematicMapping method and Interview method for data collection. 18 outof 538 papers have been selected, to identify various factors affectingcommunication and perform systematic mapping. For the interviewprocess, six participants working at various companies in the roles relatedto DevOps have been selected and semi-structured interviewshave been conducted. The data analysis has been performed usingimmersion approach and data triangulation method. A total of 12 factors affecting communication in DevOpshave been identified from the Systematic mapping. Though no newchallenge has been reported by the participants, the factors identifiedfrom the literature have been confirmed from the responses of theinterview participants and the mitigation strategies to the challengesfaced by each of these participants have been listed out by them. These findings can be used by companies struggling toimplement DevOps, to curb various communication challenges beforethey arise as well as to mitigate already facing challenges by followingthe strategies implemented by other companies. It has to be notedthat this list is not complete as new challenges may arise dependingon the software development practices of the company.

In this essay I want to investigate the internal communication of an transcultural company to see how different cultures are shown in different styles of negotiation. I have been looking at sixteen emails between a German businessman and a Swedish businessman, both working at the transcultural company Volkswagen.

The essay’s research questions are: 1. Do the German and the Swede differ when it comes to manner of speaking, and if so, how does that effect the negotiation?  2. Which styles do they use in negotiation? What kind of consequences do the styles cause? 3. Would carefully prepared rhetorical strategies make the negotiation more effective, and in that case, which strategies would that be?

To answer these questions I have made a stylistic and a structural analysis, followed by an analysis of the negotiation style and strategies. At last I studied the two cultures and made a comparison between them. I have built my essay on the theory of cultural dimensions by Hofstede and Ghauri’s idea about the phases of negotiation, to mention a few.

Conclusions I’ve made are that there are bigger differences between Germans and Swedes then I expected. I’ve also seen that education in negotiation could be profitable for transcultural companies, which I with this essay would like to convey.

The sample was composed of 4 successful virtual team leaders of a multinational accounting firm whose headquarters is in the northeastern region of the United States of America. The conceptual framework that guided this study was Tuckman's small group developmental model. Data consisted of semistructured interviews and the review of archival company documents. The interview protocol, interview transcription, member checking, and methodological triangulation allowed for data reliability and validity. Five themes emerged regarding completion of the 4 stages (comprehension, synthesizing, theorizing, and recontextualizing) of data analysis: time synchronization, face-to-face interaction, continuous training, communication tools and frequency, and leadership training and development. The findings of this study could contribute to social change enhancing communication strategies used in virtual teams, which could result in higher employee satisfaction, which in turn could benefit the organizations and virtual employees, their families, and communities.

Streszczenie:
The empirical study carried out in this degree project is exploratory, and its main objective is to investigate the development of strategic competence in oral production as it occurs in two different communication modes, namely, synchronous computer mediated communication (SCMC) and face-to-face (FTF) communication. More specifically, this study compares the instances of different communication strategies (CS) used to negotiate meaning. This aim was approached through the following research questions: RQ (1): Which types of communication strategies do Swedish learners of English use to enhance interaction in different communication modes? RQ (2): How frequently do they use these strategies in each communication mode? RQ (3): Which communicative mode creates an environment more favorable for the occurrence ofNofM? The results of the study demonstrated that the CS the participants used were: clarification request, appeals for assistance, confirmation check, provision of assistance, self-correction, use of Swedish (L1), topic shifting and circumlocution. The latter two were only used in FTF communication, making this the communication mode with the highest variety of CS types. Concerning our second RQ the frequency of usage of the aforementioned CS, the results suggest that the frequency differed between the two communicative modes a part fromappeals for assistance and provisions of assistance. In turn, self-correction, topic shift and circumlocution had a higher frequency in FTF communication, whereas clarification requests, confirmation checks and usage of Swedish had a higher occurrence rate in SCMC. Concerning our third RQ on the one hand, the results in favor of FTF communication were reflected in the higher response rate of appeals for assistance and the use of circumlocution. On the other hand, the results supporting SCMC were seen in the higher frequency and especially in the use of the L1, in the lesser occurrence of self-correction of faulty forms, as well as the higher number of turns per minute and higher percentage of turns used for CS. Based on these results, the present study would seem to point at SCMC as the most favorable communication mode for NofM.

Streszczenie:
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are characterized by limited amount of energy supply at sensor nodes. Hence, energy efficiency is an important issue in system design and operation of WSNs. In this work we focus on solving the energy efficiency problems of data gathering processes in WSNs. We first address this problem on a macroscopic level by investigating the efficiency of data gathering trees when data sent by different sensors are correlated. Such correlation aware data gathering strategies typically shift the aggregation structure from a default shortest-path tree (SPT) to a steiner minimum tree (SMT) in order to achieve the required efficiency. We study the energy efficiency of correlation aware data aggregation trees under various sensor network conditions and the tradeoffs involved in using them. Comprehensive simulation results as well as inferences and theoretical analysis of those results are presented in the thesis. Based on the insights gained through the investigation, we propose a simple, scalable and distributed correlation aware aggregation structure that achieves good energy performance across a wide range of sensor network configurations, and at the same time addresses the practical challenges of establishing a correlation aware data aggregation structure in resource-constrained WSNs. On a microscopic level, we propose a novel communication strategy called Communication through Silence (CtS) to achieve energy-efficient data gathering without significant degradation on overall throughput in WSNs. The proposed scheme primarily uses time, along with a minimal amount of energy to deliver information among sensors. CtS can be used to replace the conventional energy-based transmissions between each pair of sensor nodes during a data gathering process. We analyze in detail the primary energy-throughput tradeoff inherent in this approach as well as other challenges related to the realization of the proposed communication strategy. Finally, we propose a practical realization of CtS strategy that includes radio technology, MAC layer, and higher layer solutions. Performance evaluation results prove that this solution effectively realizes the CtS strategy in a WSN setting, at the same time achieves considerable energy savings compared to conventional communication strategies.

Streszczenie:
Techniques from engineering, economics and control theory are used in this thesis to investigate the effectiveness of dynamic pricing for demand control and capacity optimisation in cellular mobile networks. The scope is extended to include pricing strategies that can provide a certain target revenue for the network operator. Algorithms for the application of dynamic pricing in voice and data networks are suggested. Mathematical models are developed to predict the effect of dynamic pricing on the network operator's market share and the overall user demand, including the effect of variable tariffs on user mobility. The question of setting the optimal tariff for a given system load is addressed and three dynamic price setting methods suggested. The first, competition driven ad hoc pricing, is used to identify the most sensitive parameters in the model, namely the revenue generated and the level of call blocking in the network. Two further tariffs (linear revenue attainment and optimal revenue attainment) are then developed for controlling the system and ensuring optimal behaviour. The tariffs are tested using a seven-cell cellular model developed with OPNET TM. Simulation results show that the performance of the competition driven ad hoc and linear revenue attainment linear pricing strategies is varied and they lead to either a significant reduction in the revenue of the network operator or the welfare of users. The optimal revenue attainment price setting strategy, on the other hand, is shown to be an effective tool for generating the desired revenue, while decreasing the average price in the network and increasing the number of successful calls. In addition, it is suggested that the optimal dynamic pricing strategy could potentially increase a network operator's market share by up to 10% compared to traditional pricing policies, thus offering a viable pricing alternative.

Streszczenie:
Despite the rise of Islamist parties and movements in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, there is a dearth of studies addressing their political communication strategies and approaches. In consideration of this fact, this doctoral thesis examines the political communication strategies of Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, henceforth the AKP), from 2002 to 2017. Drawing on social movement theory and approaches to political communication, it analyses the transformations that have taken place within the AKP and Turkey and how these have been informed by religion, and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s charismatic leadership. The thesis describes how the author carried out ethnographic research during the 2014 presidential election; interviewing key personalities from politics, the media, academia and think tanks, and conducting observations at AKP headquarters and campaign rallies. A quantitative content analysis of Erdoğan’s speeches was then performed to triangulate the findings from the qualitative data, ensuring effective coverage of the entire period under consideration, and to provide continuity. The research reveals how the effective communication of a party’s message is fundamental to its political success. Furthermore, in relation to the AKP it clearly identifies two distinct policy periods: 2002 to 2009, when the party promoted a liberal political ideology and pro-Western foreign policy; and 2010 to 2017, when a pro-Muslim agenda emerged. It also highlights the significance of Erdoğan’s dominance of the AKP, and the consequent lack of institutionalisation within the party, before discussing the implications of the study findings for the AKP, Turkey and the wider MENA region. Of particular interest is how the changes in the AKP’s policy appear to have been reinforced by Erdoğan, who has consistently made effective use of a variety of political communication strategies, including Americanisation, and references to pertinent local images and symbols, to create a sense of collective identity amongst the AKP’s supporters.

Increasing prevalence of autonomous systems has generated interest in effective inclusion of robots as team members in many domains, especially where complex and safety-critical tasks must be performed. We envision a world where autonomous systems can be seamlessly integrated into high performing human teams. In order for team members to successfully work in concert to achieve a goal, the team must establish a common understanding of the task expectations and communicate effectively. In this dissertation , we drew inspiration from studies of effective human teamwork, which showed that best performing human teams exploit anticipatory coordination strategies (referred to as implicit coordination) to selectively communicate information based on the perceived needs of the other members in the team instead of requesting for information (referred to as explicit coordination). We elaborated upon prior characterizations of communication as implicit versus explicit by dividing implicit communication into two subtypes: (1) goal-based information (referred to as deliberative-implicit communication) and (2) status updates (referred to as reactive-implicit communication). Based on an empirical study conducted using 13 teams of 4 people working on a collaborative search-and-deliver task, we found that the best performing teams exhibited higher rates of deliberative communication than reactive communication compared to the worst-performing teams (p = 0.039). In other words, the best performing teams proactively shared goal-based information with their teammates. By gaining insight into how high-performing human teams communicate effectively, we developed a computational model using a Maximum Entropy Markov Model (MEMM) that selected the appropriate communication type (i.e., deliberative, reactive, explicit or no communication) for the autonomous agent using human teams' data. We showed that the MEMM model accuracy was high when the model was trained and tested using the best-performing teams' data (73.3%) and all 13 teams' data (92.3%) from the previously studied human-human teams. We further validated this model by assessing team performance in an empirical study where teams consisting of 2 human and 2 autonomous agent worked on a collaborative task. We compared the performance of teams with agents using the MEMM communication model to performance of teams with agents communicating using only deliberative-implicit communications or reactive-implicit communications. Results from this study showed that team performance with agents using the MEMM communication model was statistically better than team performance with agents using reactive-implicit communication model (p < 0.001) and deliberative communication model for the fastest five teams (p <0.001). We also found that mean task completion time for agent using the MEMM model was equivalent to the mean task completion time of human-human teams study within 95% confidence. For these reasons, we recommend that a human inspired communication model be further investigated and implemented in human robot teams meant to work in cooperation with human teammates. This is the first study to empirically demonstrate that teams consisting of humans and autonomous agents, where the agents were designed to emulate communication strategies of human teams, performs equally as well as teams with all humans.

Streszczenie:
Although international business-to-business marketing is pervasive, little systematic empirical work has been conducted on face-to-face interactions between channel members from different cultures. Greater knowledge regarding cross-cultural communication strategies (e.g. verbal and non-verbal language choices) and behavioral adaptations (e.g. rapport building, increased flexibility with timing, and contractual format) will enhance the strength, efficiency and longevity of relationships between channel partners from distinct cultures. More importantly, a lack of this knowledge seriously jeopardizes cross-cultural understanding and the ability to develop and maintain intercultural exchange relationships. This dissertation presents an empirically derived conceptual framework of cross-cultural communication and behavioral processes. This framework is drawn from extensive ethnographic fieldwork in two intercultural channels of distribution and from academic literature. Acculturation moderates the influence that culture of the producer and the power situation have on the choice of communication strategies and behaviors in interactions between intercultural channel partners. The more the choice of communication strategies and behavioral adaptations is consistent with cultural traditions of the channel members, the higher the levels of trust engendered through the relationship. Hence, trust was expected to be a critical predictor of satisfaction and performance. This was consistent in the interview data, but not in the observation data. The conceptual framework is tested using survey research in the same industries. Power and acculturation were found to have limited effects on the choice of communication strategies. Trust was shown to play a very limited role as a mediating variable. However, significant correlations between the communication strategies and behavioral adaptations and the business outcome variables were revealed. In the conclusion, implications for marketing managers are discussed, limitations of this research are outlined, and future research ideas are proposed.

According to scholars and organizations that focus on the performance of organizations in the nonprofit sector, retaining loyal and engaged donors has been a critical component of sustainability. Through the conceptual lens of single- and double-loop learning and organizational communications theory, this single-case study explored donor communication strategies used by 3 executive-level leaders of a nonprofit organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Data collected from semistructured interviews, organizational documents, and Guidestar, an online information service specializing in reporting on U.S. nonprofit companies, were manually coded and thematically analyzed. Two key themes emerged: effective processes for donor communication strategy development and organizational learning strategy development. Strategy development may assist this Minneapolis company’s organizational leaders with improving retention of donors and participants in the company’s programs and services, increasing action plan completion rates, and integrating the lessons learned process during the development and implementation of communication strategies to increase donor retention. By bridging the gap between performance arts and social responsibility, this company’s leaders may engage both donors and participants, resulting in favorable retention rates. These findings have implications for positive social change. Nonprofit leaders’ models of effective communications strategies and processes to improve participant and donor engagement may ensure leaders’ ability to serve and improve their communities by engaging at-risk youth in programs designed to develop performance arts and leadership skills.

Streszczenie:
English When we observe the interpreters in their booths battling with ambiguity in order to find the accurate meaning of an ambiguous utterance, we inevitably come to the realization of the daunting impact of ambiguities on the latter. Ambiguity in general and diplomatic ambiguity in particular, is a thorn in interpreters’ sides. Then, the main question is “what strategies can the interpreter use to cope successfully with diplomatic ambiguity?” How do interpreters manage to find ways of resolving instances of ambiguity when interpreting in a diplomatic setting that requires immediate disambiguation. This mini-dissertation investigates the theme of diplomatic ambiguity in interpreter-mediated communication and comes up with responses to these concerns and queries. It (this mini-dissertation) primarily focuses on interpreting as an act of communication insofar as interpreting is a professional verbal communication activity. It then looks specifically into ambiguity in diplomatic communication. Diplomatic communication is often riddled with ambiguity; in turn, ambiguity, affects and correlates to meaning. And here lies the problem with diplomatic ambiguity: diplomatic ambiguity prevents a proper understanding or reception of the intended meaning. It therefore poses problems to the interpreter. In view of the above, this mini-dissertation has a practical purpose: to provide the interpreter with a clear sense of problem-solving techniques for the resolution of ambiguity. In this respect, coping tactics and strategies will be proposed as a means of clarifying ambiguities, elucidating obscure passages.

A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Communication Science at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2012.
The study was conducted with the purpose of surveying the nature, patterns and trends of the new communication strategies to enhance marketing of fast moving customer goods (FMCG). The researcher intended to investigate current consumer behaviour with respect to fast moving consumer goods FMCG and new communication strategies for marketing of FMCG. The study focused primarily on managing FMCG to increase its availability to rural communities with the hope of addressing poverty eradication and providing some avenues for job creation. This included an investigation into new media and technology to enhance the marketing of FMCG with the intention of making these goods more easily accessible to rural communities. The study also investigated current consumer behaviour with respect to fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and new communication strategies for marketing of FMCG. Unravelling methods of making FMCG easily available to rural communities would be an alternate strategy to urbanise rural communities and reduce unemployment. FMCG forms a fundamental aspect of people’s daily lives and is an ideal tool which can be used to manipulate industry to touch lives of all people throughout South Africa. The study offers thought provoking ideas on how to urbanise rural communities by using basic commodities which people use on a daily basis, and it further offers ideas for further research in this field. It also unravels contemporary methods of marketing basic commodities.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute to the field of second language (L2) communication strategies (CS) and, particularly, to examine which factors or combinations of factors are involved in the use and development of effective CS in L2 speakers. According to the review of the relevant literature, there is a series of potentially affecting factors that may influence or be connected to CS use, though their role remains controversial. The research questions in the present study are thus formulated with reference to the following factors: learning context (study abroad or SA vs. at-home courses or AH), attention control, analytic ability, language learning strategies (LLS) and proficiency level. Particular attention is paid to learning context as an affecting factor via an exploration of which of the other factors predict CS effectiveness development in each of the contexts under study. The relevant constructs are measured for 65 adult Spanish intermediate to upper-intermediate learners of English as an L2. Within that sample, 33 learners participated in a SA programme in an English-speaking country for four months, while the remaining 32 took around 15 hours of university courses taught in English in Spanish universities (AH group) over the same time period. The use of CS in English L2 communication was assessed both at the beginning (T1) and at the end (T2) of the testing period in order to account for the effect of learning context on the development of effective CS. Effectiveness in CS implementation was measured by means of a double analysis approach, consisting of an in-situ assessment performed by raters, and the application of a systematic CS effectiveness measurement instrument, the mini-Delphi scale (Montero, Serrano & Llanes, 2013). The results of the present study suggest, first, that there is no significant effect of either SA or AH L2 learning context or of proficiency level on the development of effective CS, at least over a period of four months. Second, attention control, analytic ability and LLS do not seem to be connected to the use of effective CS in L2 communication. The correlation between proficiency level and effective CS use seems to align with previous studies in indicating that more proficient L2 learners are more effective CS users. Finally, the results indicate that there are certain interactions between learning context and some of the other factors under analysis. More specifically, the results reveal that participants in the AH context with higher analytic ability develop their CS effectiveness to a greater extent than those with a lower analytic ability over a period of four months. Findings in the present study also suggest that SA students with higher attention control tend to develop more effective CS than those with lower attention control, although this connection is not as clear and therefore needs further research. This dissertation makes an original contribution to the CS research area by studying connections that have presumably not been investigated before, such as the possible influence of attention control and LLS on CS use, and also the possible interactions between L2 learning context (both SA and AH) and other factors with an effect on the development of effective CS. Additionally, this dissertation provides further empirical evidence to other controversial or understudied areas, such as the effect of learning context on CS effectiveness development and the connection between analytic ability and effective CS use.

To answer these questions, we have read and analyzed fourteen different empirical studies regarding communication strategies. The first question was answered by analyzing the empirical studies and relevant theory. We found various definitions in our studies, stemming from different theoretical perspectives. However, they all define oral communication strategies as serving the purpose of furthering interaction. Furthermore, by comparing the definitions in the Swedish syllabi for English and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages to our literature, we were able to answer the second part of the first question. The literature shows that there is a preference for achievement strategies over avoidance or reduction strategies. To answer the first part of the second question, some studies indicated a positive correlation between strategy use and the level of proficiency. Regarding pedagogical implications, some studies indicate that explicit strategy training has a positive effect on oral performance. Drawing on the results of these studies and the theoretical framework provided, we conclude that achievement strategies are to be preferred and that they should be taught explicitly.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation investigated expressive strategies and performer-listener communication in organ performance. Four core issues were explored: (a) the communication of voice emphasis; (b) the communication of artistic individuality; (c) the influence of musical structure on error patterns; and (d) the relationship between performers' interpretive choices and their analyses of the formal structure of a piece. Performances were recorded on an organ equipped with a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) console, allowing precise measurements of performance parameters. Performances were then matched to scores using an algorithm relying both on structural and temporal information, which I developed in the context of this project. Two experiments investigated the communication of voice-specific emphasis in organ performance. The modification of articulation patterns was the most consistent strategy used by performers to emphasize a voice. Listeners who were themselves organists were more sensitive to differences between performers and interpretations than non-organists; however, musical structure was a major factor in the perception of voice prominence. The perception of artistic individuality in organ performance was examined by inviting participants to sort different interpretations of a chorale setting by several performers. Most participants performed above chance level. The performance of musicians and non-musicians was comparable. Sorting accuracy was lower for mechanical interpretations than for expressive ones, demonstrating an effect of expressive intent. In addition, sorting accuracy was significantly higher for prize-winning performers than for non-winners. Analyses of error patterns in organ performance showed that the likelihood of a note being wrongly played was inversely correlated with its degree of perceptual salience and musical significance or familiarity. Furthermore, individual performers exhibited consistent and idiosyncratic error patterns.

Today’s emerging Co-design processes between citizens and civil servants in helixes groups, produces multiple challenges for the interaction designer. How can these challenges produce new merging roles and communication strategies for interaction designers for use in Co-design processes? This thesis focuses on the design research process outcomes from Co-design processes between civil servants and citizens in urban development processes. The tangible outcomes will be elicited through the merging of practice-based know-how as seen through the eyes of an interaction designer with a bifocal lens on Social psychology and Behavior economics. This research process produces tangible outcomes in the form of educational material, communication methods and strategies for interaction designers, civil servants in Co-design processes. Additional outcomes are digital communication strategies for city operations based on the need for increased citizen involvement in the urban development process.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this thesis was to create a resilient network, capable of handling link failures without affecting the data flow. This was done by using graph theory and three mathematical models. A generic system was created, on which the models were applied on. The mathematical models were path diversity, edge protection and path restoration. These models were tested to evaluate if they could create a robust system. The models were also compared with each other to obtain the best performing one. It was concluded that it was possible to construct a resilient network using these types of mathematical modelling. It was also concluded that the models provided different results in terms of cost and robustness. The report ends with suggestions on future work of how studies can be conducted to create realistic systems.
