Streszczenie:
We consider the problem of Combinatorial Pure Exploration (CPE), which deals with finding a combinatorial set of arms with a high reward, when the rewards of individual arms are unknown in advance and must be estimated using arm pulls. Previous algorithms for this problem, while obtaining sample complexity reductions in many cases, are highly computationally intensive, thus making them impractical even for mildly large problems. In this work, we propose a new CPE algorithm in the PAC setting, which is computationally light weight, and so can easily be applied to problems with tens of thousands of arms. This is achieved since the proposed algorithm requires a very small number of combinatorial oracle calls. The algorithm is based on successive acceptance of arms, along with elimination which is based on the combinatorial structure of the problem. We provide sample complexity guarantees for our algorithm, and demonstrate in experiments its usefulness on large problems, whereas previous algorithms are impractical to run on problems of even a few dozen arms. Combinatorial technology is a powerful tool for new material exploration. Some new combinatorial technologies, such as combinatorial laser molecular beam epitaxy (CLMBE) and combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (CPLD), were introduced in the paper. La1-xCexVO3 (0≤x≤1) composition-spread films were fabricated successfully by CPLD, while their thermoelectric properties and structures were evaluated by the multi-channel thermoelectric measurement system and concurrent X-ray analysis respectively. Combinatorial technologies are proving to be an efficient, low-cost tool in synthesis and characterization of thermoelectric composition-spread films.

Streszczenie:
Reusing structural components has potential to reduce environmental impacts of building structures because it reduces new material use, energy consumption, and waste. When designing structures through reuse, available element characteristics become a design input. This paper presents a new computational workflow to design structures made of reused and new elements. The workflow combines Combinatorial Equilibrium Modeling, efficient Best-Fit heuristics, and Life Cycle Assessment to explore different design options in a user-interactive way and with almost real-time feedback. The method applicability is demonstrated by a realistic case study. Results show that structures combining reused and new elements have a significantly lower environmental impact than solutions made of new material only.

Streszczenie:
In this paper, we first study the problem of combinatorial pure exploration with full-bandit feedback (CPE-BL), where a learner is given a combinatorial action space X \subseteq {0,1}^d, and in each round the learner pulls an action x \in X and receives a random reward with expectation x^T \theta, with \theta \in \R^d a latent and unknown environment vector. The objective is to identify the optimal action with the highest expected reward, using as few samples as possible. For CPE-BL, we design the first polynomial-time adaptive algorithm, whose sample complexity matches the lower bound (within a logarithmic factor) for a family of instances and has a light dependence of \Delta_min (the smallest gap between the optimal action and sub-optimal actions). Furthermore, we propose a novel generalization of CPE-BL with flexible feedback structures, called combinatorial pure exploration with partial linear feedback (CPE-PL), which encompasses several families of sub-problems including full-bandit feedback, semi-bandit feedback, partial feedback and nonlinear reward functions. In CPE-PL, each pull of action x reports a random feedback vector with expectation of M_x \theta , where M_x \in R^{m_x \times d} is a transformation matrix for x, and gains a random (possibly nonlinear) reward related to x. For CPE-PL, we develop the first polynomial-time algorithm, which simultaneously addresses limited feedback, general reward function and combinatorial action space (e.g., matroids, matchings and s-t paths), and provide its sample complexity analysis. Our empirical evaluation demonstrates that our algorithms run orders of magnitude faster than the existing ones, and our CPE-BL algorithm is robust across different \Delta_min settings while our CPE-PL algorithm is the first one returning correct answers for nonlinear reward functions.

Tom Johnson is an American musician and composer living in Paris who regularly composes pieces based on combinatorial designs. He recently posed the following question: is there a way to construct five Room squares of side seven such that each of the thirty-five possible fill patterns is used exactly once? In this thesis we study his question and several related questions concerning the possible fill patterns in sets of Room squares of side 7 and 11. The second problem addressed in this thesis is a conjecture by Marco Buratti, a combinatorialist from the Universitia di Perusia, Italy. He conjectured that given p a prime and a multiset S containing p - 1 non-zero elements from Zp, there exists a Hamiltonian path in Kp where the multiset of edge lengths is S. Part of the motivation behind studying this particular problem is the possible application to constructing cyclic combinatorial designs. In this thesis we completely solve the case where S contains at most two distinct values.

At the intersection of algebraic geometry, number theory, and combinatorics, an interesting problem is counting points on an algebraic curve over a finite field. When specialized to the case of elliptic curves, this question leads to a surprising connection with a particular family of graphs. In this document, we present some of the underlying theory and then summarize recent results concerning the aforementioned relationship between elliptic curves and graphs. A few results are additionally further elucidated by theory that was omitted in their original presentation.

Dynamic combinatorial chemistry (DCC) has recently been introduced as a new and attractive approach for generating and screening large numbers of library compounds in one step. Based upon the reversible interconnection between library components, the self-adjusting process give access to selection and amplification of the best binder in the presence of a target. In this thesis, two biological targets were chosen to explore the DCC approach. The reversibility of the system was achieved using disulfide interchange or reversible acyl hydrazone formation. Firstly, a dynamic library of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors was generated through disulfide exchange. The reversibility of the system was observed by NMR spectroscopy. Upon scrambling 5 initial homodisulfides in the presence of a reducing agent, a 15-compound library was produced. The library components were analyzed by ESI-MS and CE. Secondly, a dynamic combinatorial library of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors was further generated through reversible acyl hydrazone formation. The pre-equilibrated process was applied to produce a dynamic library composed of 66 possible species, from a set of 13 initial aldehyde and hydrazide building blocks. Using a technique called dynamic deconvolution, a highly potent inhibitor was identified with IC50 in the nanomolar range. Finally, the pre-equilibrated process combined with the dynamic deconvolution technique was further studied to identify HPr kinase/phosphatase inhibitors. From a set of 21 initial aldehyde and hydrazide builiding blocks, a dynamic library of 440 possible compounds was formed in one operation. A bis-cationic heterocyclic ligand was identified as a relatively potent inhibitor, displaying an IC50 in the micromolar range

Streszczenie:
In the building automation domain, there are gaps among various tasks related to design engineering. As a result created system designs must be adapted to the given requirements on system functionality, which is related to increased costs and engineering effort than planned. For this reason standards are prepared to enable a coordination among these tasks by providing guidelines and unified artifacts for the design. Moreover, a huge variety of prefabricated devices offered from different manufacturers on the market for building automation that realize building automation functions by preprogrammed software components. Current methods for design creation do not consider this variety and design solution is limited to product lines of a few manufacturers and expertise of system integrators. Correspondingly, this results in design solutions of a limited quality. Thus, a great optimization potential of the quality of design solutions and coordination of tasks related to design engineering arises. For given design requirements, the existence of a high number of devices that realize required functions leads to a combinatorial explosion of design alternatives at different price and quality levels. Finding optimal design alternatives is a hard problem to which a new solution method is proposed based on heuristical approaches. By integrating problem specific knowledge into algorithms based on heuristics, a promisingly high optimization performance is achieved. Further, optimization algorithms are conceived to consider a set of flexibly defined quality criteria specified by users and achieve system design solutions of high quality. In order to realize this idea, optimization algorithms are proposed in this thesis based on goal-oriented operations that achieve a balanced convergence and exploration behavior for a search in the design space applied in different strategies. Further, a component model is proposed that enables a seamless integration of design engineering tasks according to the related standards and application of optimization algorithms.

AbstractIn flexible manufacturing settings, automation is shaped by ever changing conditions (e.g. varying part feeding locations, highly customizable products). Quick adaptation of robot systems is mostly achieved by visual end-user robot (re-)programming. In this paper, we discuss the explicit integration of anticipated product and process variety into visually programmed tasks. We contribute a task model which captures a user-defined range of task variants. To this end, parts are specified in terms of approximate locations and generalized parts families. Workspace exploration and combinatorial assignment planning enable online adaptation to unknown environments. Our experiments show that this adaptation capability can increase the economical efficiency of cobot use.

AbstractSystematic testing of autonomous vehicles operating in complex real-world scenarios is a difficult and expensive problem. We present Paracosm, a framework for writing systematic test scenarios for autonomous driving simulations. Paracosm allows users to programmatically describe complex driving situations with specific features, e.g., road layouts and environmental conditions, as well as reactive temporal behaviors of other cars and pedestrians. A systematic exploration of the state space, both for visual features and for reactive interactions with the environment is made possible. We define a notion of test coverage for parameter configurations based on combinatorial testing and low dispersion sequences. Using fuzzing on parameter configurations, our automatic test generator can maximize coverage of various behaviors and find problematic cases. Through empirical evaluations, we demonstrate the capabilities of Paracosm in programmatically modeling parameterized test environments, and in finding problematic scenarios.

Streszczenie:
When modeling an application of practical relevance as an instance of a combinatorial problem X, we are often interested not merely in finding one optimal solution for that instance, but in finding a sufficiently diverse collection of good solutions. In this work we initiate a systematic study of diversity from the point of view of fixed-parameter tractability theory. We consider an intuitive notion of diversity of a collection of solutions which suits a large variety of combinatorial problems of practical interest. Our main contribution is an algorithmic framework which --automatically-- converts a tree-decomposition-based dynamic programming algorithm for a given combinatorial problem X into a dynamic programming algorithm for the diverse version of X. Surprisingly, our algorithm has a polynomial dependence on the diversity parameter.

Streszczenie:
We study the Combinatorial Pure Exploration problem with Continuous and Separable reward functions (CPE-CS) in the stochastic multi-armed bandit setting. In a CPE-CS instance, we are given several stochastic arms with unknown distributions, as well as a collection of possible decisions. Each decision has a reward according to the distributions of arms. The goal is to identify the decision with the maximum reward, using as few arm samples as possible. The problem generalizes the combinatorial pure exploration problem with linear rewards, which has attracted significant attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose an adaptive learning algorithm for the CPE-CS problem, and analyze its sample complexity. In particular, we introduce a new hardness measure called the consistent optimality hardness, and give both the upper and lower bounds of sample complexity. Moreover, we give examples to demonstrate that our solution has the capacity to deal with non-linear reward functions.
