Streszczenie:
In this study, we tested a modified academic satisfaction model based on social cognitive career theory in a sample of 757 college students in China. The hypothesized model included personality traits (extraversion and emotional stability), self-construals (independence and interdependence), environmental and person-cognitive variables (supports, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and perceived goal progress) in the academic domain, and academic and global well-being outcomes. Pathways that consisted of academic supports, self-efficacy, and goal progress partially mediated the effects of personality traits and self-construals on academic satisfaction and/or stress, which were, in turn, predictive of life satisfaction. Although Chinese students perceived outcomes of completing a college degree as favorable, such outcome expectations did not predict progress made in the academic domain. Multigroup analyses showed that the modified academic satisfaction model was applicable to both male and female college students in two major metropolitan areas—Chongqing in Southwest China and Shanghai in East China. With evidence for measurement equivalence, full structural equivalence was present by gender, whereas two of the hypothesized paths differed by location. Results of the study suggest that outreach or intervention programs, which involve gathering supports, boosting self-efficacy, and facilitating goal progress in the academic domain, are particularly beneficial for promoting the well-being of Chinese college students.

Cyberbullying can have a terrible impact on the physical and mental health of those involved. In severe cases, some of those involved develop anxiety, depression, and suicidal tendencies. However, few studies focus on cyberbullying among Chinese college students. We aimed to understand the incidence of cyberbullying in social media and online games and its associated factors among college students in China. A cross-sectional STAR questionnaire survey was conducted for college students from the end of June to the beginning of July 2019. Selected via the method of cluster random sampling, students graded 1–5 (college) from two colleges in Shantou were invited to participate in the survey. Information was collected regarding respondents’ socio-demographic information, cyberbullying in social media and online games, self-esteem, anxiety symptoms, Internet addiction, etc. A binary logistic regression model was employed to use all significant variables tested using χ² test or t-test for estimating the effect of potential factors on cyberbullying among college students. Participants were 20.43 ± 1.513 (X ± SD) years old, and the age range was 15 to 25 years old. 64.32% college students reported that they had suffered from cyberbullying, and 25.98% reported bullying others online during the semester. Gender, anxiety symptoms, Internet addiction, game time, and violent elements in games were associated with cyberbullying in social media and online games among college students in China. In conclusion, cyberbullying in social media and online games is prevalent among college students in China. The above data provided insights that targeted and effective measures should be taken to prevent college students from cyberbullying.

However, both college English teachers and students in China suffer from “Chinese cultural aphasia”, and the majority of them are incapable of introducing Chinese culture to foreign friends due to the insufficient attention to Chinese culture teaching, the lack of Chinese cultural knowledge in most college English textbooks, college teachers’ shortage of Chinese cultural knowledge and the strong influence of the western culture on college students, etc. The project of “Chinese culture going global” has three implications for college English teaching: enhancing Chinese cultural consciousness and confidence of college teachers and students in China, enlarging English vocabulary concerning Chinese culture and enriching college students’ Chinese cultural knowledge; and improving Chinese college students' intercultural communication competence.

AbstractIn the 1990s, rural youth from poor counties in China had limited access to college. After mass college expansion started in 1998, however, it was unclear whether rural youth from poor counties would gain greater access. The aim of this paper is to examine the gap in college and elite college access between rural youth from poor counties and other students after expansion. We estimate the gaps in access by using data on all students who took the college entrance exam in 2003. Our results show that gaps in access remained high even after expansion. Rural youth from poor counties were seven and 11 times less likely to access any college and elite Project 211 colleges than urban youth, respectively. Much larger gaps existed for disadvantaged subgroups (female or ethnic minority) of rural youth from poor counties. We also find that the gaps in college access were mainly driven by rural–urban differences rather than differences between poor and non-poor counties within rural or urban areas.

Ecological civilization is the inevitable route of human development. However, the practice of ecological civilization is not as positive as expected, especially for college students. Hence, the aim of this research is to investigate how to strengthen the practice of college students towards ecological civilization in China. Based on the Triandis’ Interpersonal Behavior Model, a questionnaire survey is performed to explore the status quo of factors affecting college students’ ecological civilization behaviors. Results reveal that society does not provide enough facilities for ecological civilization. Thus, as personal interests conflicting with the environment, some college students would not carry out the concept of ecological civilization. Meanwhile, though most of college students have the right attitude and good habits of water saving and waste batteries proposal, the guidance of ecological civilization for the habits of takeout and online shopping has not been formed. Also, college students could not actively participate in ecological civilization construction. Therefore, to strengthen ecological civilization practice, it is indispensable to acquire joint efforts from individuals, government, families, universities and social organizations. The practice of ecological civilization is inseparable from the efforts of every college student. Besides, the government, every social organization, every family, and every university should create appropriate facilitating conditions, so that college students could form ecological civilization habits consciously. At the same time, universities, society and family should form good social reference standards to directly and indirectly educate college students so as to help them identify their roles and self-concept.

Purpose: To investigate the changing tendency and influencing factors of the professional identity of male nursing students in 3-year colleges and junior male nurses in China. Background: In China, the majority of nurses are 3-year nursing college graduates, among which male nurses are underrepresented. Many male nurses leave the profession 3 or 4 years after graduation. Little is known about the professional identity of Chinese male nursing students in 3-year colleges and junior male nurses. Methods: This study included 237 male nursing students from a 3-year college and 33 junior male nurses with less than 3 years of experience in China. By using the data collected with the Professional Identity Questionnaire of Nursing Students and through in-depth semistructured interviews from November 2019 to April 2020, t-test, and ANOVA analysis in SPSS22.0 were conducted and thematic analysis was applied to interviews. Results: Compared with undergraduate nursing students, Chinese male nursing students in 3-year colleges had a better professional identity, displaying a declining tendency with grades. Junior male nurses reported the lowest professional identity. Demographic factors such as family residence and presence of relatives in medical service were positively related to professional identity. Low professional identity was related to heavy workload as well as gender stereotypes. Two unique contextual factors influenced the professional identity: (a) curriculum setting and (b) nurse exams. Conclusion: College education and initial working experience were critical to professional identity formation for male nurses. Appropriate measures need to be taken to improve professional identity and promote gender diversity.

Multilinear stepwise regression showed that 11 of 16 factors, including age, grade, major, menarche age, family residence, being the only child, and mother’s occupation were significantly related to knowledge. Female college students lack knowledge of sexual and reproductive health, and their knowledge was influenced by numerous sociodemographic factors.

This study explored the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among college students and analyzed the associations between only children and anxiety and depressive symptoms in college students in China. A total of 645 college students, from three universities in Jinan, Shandong, China, were investigated by questionnaire. The self-designed general information questionnaire was used to collect the demographic information such as gender, age, only children or not and so on. The Self-rating Anxiety Scale and Self-rating Depression Scale were used to reflect the psychological state of college students. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to analyze associated factors of anxiety and depressive symptoms. We have found that there were 25.7% college students with anxiety symptom, 22.2% college students with depressive symptom, and 18.3% college students with a comorbidity of anxiety and depressive symptoms. The prevalence of anxiety symptom, depressive symptom, and comorbidity of anxiety and depressive symptoms in only children was higher than those among non-only children. There were no differences between males and females in anxiety symptom, depressive symptom, and comorbidity of anxiety and depressive symptoms among all college students, only child college students and non-only child college students. Only children were associated with anxiety symptom, depressive symptom, comorbidity of anxiety and depressive symptoms after adjusting potential important confounding factors, such as professional category, grade, parental relationship, parenting style, interpersonal relationship, activity participation enthusiasm, sleeping time, and eating habits. The prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among college students was high. We should pay more attention to the mental health of college students, especially that of only child college students.

Abstract China’s higher education system has experienced a profound process of restructuring and transformation from elite to mass higher education in the past decades. College students are struggling with an increasingly disconnected learning experience which is caused by a more competitive learning environment. Under these new circumstances, what is the nature of student engagement in China’s colleges and universities? How do different forms of student engagement affect undergraduates’ success in college? This empirical study examined self-reported data of 18,607 students from 55 Chinese colleges in Beijing through structural equation modeling. The main findings are: student learning experience in college is integrated; different forms of student engagement have a complex mechanism of impacting on each other and consequently directly and indirectly contribute to student gains in college. Findings indicate that institutions in China and other Asian countries need to capture a comprehensive picture of how students change through assessing student overall college experience from a variety of perspectives.

Campus loans have become a part of the lives of Chinese college students. While such loans are convenient for students, they can also create considerable difficulties. In the context of unbalanced economic development between Western and Eastern China, this study aimed to understand the factors affecting the campus loan behaviors of college students in Western China. A sample of 568 undergraduate and graduate students from four universities in Western China was taken as the research object. Binary logistic regression and orderly logistic regression were used to study campus loan consumption factors. Students without state-subsidized loans were found to have stronger campus loan consumption intention and higher loan amounts, and recreational consumption was the main loan purpose. The factors affecting campus loan consumption included students’ family structure, parents’ education level, peer students’ consumption status, grade level, relationship status, and ability to assess loan risk. Based on the findings, suggestions are made for managing campus loan behavior from the perspectives of the individual, family, school, and government. This study can provide guidance for standardizing campus loans and adjusting college students’ consumption attitudes and behaviors.

Reading skill proficiency is a pre-requisite for language teaching and learning (T&L) activities that students need to master. This is because by mastering the reading skill, one can understand the content of the reading text and enrich their vocabulary. However, the data showed that the students at Tongxin Arabic College of Ningxia in China were still facing the challenge to master the reading skill. This situation indirectly poses a barrier to achieving the objectives of T&L activities. Therefore, this study was conducted to obtain data related to the problems faced by students in mastering the reading skill in Arabic language T&L activities at Tongxin Arabic College. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires, observations, and interviews. The simple random sampling method used in this study involved 56 female students, 44 male students, 3 male teachers, and 9 female teachers. The data obtained were analysed using SPSS software. It was found from the findings of the study that there were five factors that had influenced the reading skill proficiency among students, namely physiological factors, self-motivation, effort, implementation strategies, and lack of vocabulary size. Apart from that, there were other additional factors that also influenced students' reading skill proficiency, which included poor grammar, passive engagement in the classroom, lack of exercise, lack of educational resources, and rewards for teachers. This study also proposes a number of appropriate measures to address this problem from the students’ aspects and the teachers’ aspects. From the students’ aspects, it is proposed that the reading resources are diversified such as the use of the electronic medium as an alternative reading medium. Whereas from the teachers’ aspects, it is proposed that the methodologies used in T&L activities are strengthened. It is hoped that this study will improve the level of reading skill proficiency among students in Tongxin Arabic.

AbstractInequalities in college access are a major concern for policymakers in both developed and developing countries. Policymakers in China have largely tried to address these inequalities by helping disadvantaged students successfully transition from high school to college. However, they have paid less attention to the possibility that inequalities in college access may also arise earlier in the pathway to college. The purpose of this paper is to understand where inequalities emerge along the pathway to college in China, focusing on three major milestones after junior high. By analysing administrative data on over 300,000 students from one region of China, we find that the largest inequalities in college access emerge at the first post-compulsory milestone along the pathway to college: when students transition from junior high to high school. In particular, only 60 per cent of students from poor counties take the high school entrance exam (compared to nearly 100 per cent of students from non-poor counties). Furthermore, students from poor counties are about one and a half times less likely to attend academic high school and elite academic high school than students from non-poor counties.

SummaryWe use a unique dataset based on reported direct personal bribes paid by arts students in China at examinations and in the college admissions process to study willingness to bribe. We find that individual willingness to bribe depends on personal characteristics rather than on the attributes of the admissions process at different colleges and universities. The perceived level of corruption, personal attitudes towards corruption, academic attainment, and the rank of a college are significant predictors of bribery. Based on self-reporting, students from middle-income families have a higher likelihood of engaging in bribery than students from poor or rich families. There are no significant gender differences in bribing behavior. We acknowledge and seek to account for the possibility of identity-confirming expressive behavior in the survey responses.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the type and quality of sexuality education received by college students in Hangzhou, China. Their attitudes towards sex and sexuality were also explored. To set the broader context the regulations and laws governing the provision of sexuality education in China have also been examined. Design/methodology/approach – A cross-sectional survey of 132 college students was conducted in Hangzhou, China in 2013. The aim was to explore their experience of and attitudes towards their sexuality education. Findings – Most respondents lacked formal sexuality education. Neither schools nor parents were reported to be the major providers of sexuality education. The students reported that their main sources of knowledge and information relating to sex were their fellow schoolmates and the internet. Participants reported insufficient or inaccurate sexual knowledge as a key factor in their participation in unprotected sex. Attitudes towards premarital sex and cohabitation, and homosexual relationships were reported to be more open and tolerant than those of the older generation. Originality/value – The data from this study suggest that reluctance amongst parents and schools to provide formal and comprehensive sexuality education has resulted in unsatisfactory sexuality education in Hangzhou. The lack of sexuality education among college students may have had an influence on their unsafe sexual behaviours which is potentially damaging to both their physical and psychological health. Implications for improving the quality of sexuality education for young people in China are discussed.

This study investigated factors considered as having an influence on the psychological adaptation of college students. Some 1,134 students from Wu Han University, Hui Bei province, China, participated in the study with an impressive response rate of 99%. Results of the study indicate that factors such as “parental occupations”, “parental education”, “interest in major”, “body image”, “place raised” and “gender” have a significant correlation with the psychological adaptation of college students in China. Asignificant relationship was found between fathers' education and occupation and college students' levels of anxiety and depression. Also, between the interest in major studied, and place raised, and body image and anxiety and depression. Levels of depression were found to be significantly greater for girls when looking at depression and gender. Though various reasons were given as possible causes for the levels of anxiety and depression among college students, caution must be exercised in interpreting the findings as among other things, selection bias could not be ruled out. Finally, this paper provides an interesting addition to the literature given the few related studies undertaken in China.

University students play a major role in improving the quality of society and the productivity of a nation in terms of their physical fitness level and recreational activity (Cheng, 1998). This article examines the status, the generally recognized importance and perceived benefits of recreational and sport participation (leisure time activities) for college students. Additionally, a comparison, by means of a survey instrument, is made between university students' recreational sport participation in six different countries—China, Japan, Korea, Iran, the United States, and Canada—with the recreational sport participation of university students within the Republic of China (Taiwan). The survey reveals the type of recreational participation of collegiate students in these countries, as well as factors that affected the students' choice of recreational and leisure time pursuits at their colleges and universities, with implications for future planning of recreational and sport activities for students at colleges and universities.

To find and solve the problems existing in the development of higher education in China, the input–output, scale of higher education, students’ tuition and teachers’ income of Chinese and American universities are compared. The results show that the investment in top universities in China is similar to that in the United States, but the average student budget is much less, and the output is not comparable to that of American universities. The scale of higher education is much larger than that of the United States, and the growth rate is far more than demand. College tuition should be increased, with the absolute tuition only 5.93% of income, and relative tuition is 20.21% of that in the United States. College teachers are underpaid, earning only approximately 20% of what their peers earn in the United States. Therefore, for higher education sustainability, the paper puts forward the development direction of higher education in China, which is to control the expansion scale of colleges and universities, and to increase students’ tuition and teachers’ salary.

Ethnic minority college students in China are Chinese students who migrate from ethnic minority-dominant areas to Han-dominant areas to attend college. Acculturative stress would lead to maladjustments for ethnic minority college students in China, such as low levels of life satisfaction. To help improve the life satisfaction of these students, this study adopted resilience theory to explore the beneficial effects of hope and social support and their influencing mechanisms. The participants included 362 ethnic minority college students in Beijing, China, and a questionnaire method was used. The results indicated that Han social support had a promotive effect on life satisfaction, while hope did not have a promotive effect on life satisfaction. Moreover, Han social support moderated the relationship between hope and life satisfaction. Specifically, the effect of hope on life satisfaction was stronger under the condition of a higher level of Han social support compared with those under a lower level of Han social support. In conclusion, Han social support can play a promotive effect individually, while hope only affected life satisfaction when a high level of Han social support existed. Han social support should be strengthened to improve the life satisfaction among ethnic minority college students in China.

Nowadays computers are becoming smaller and more powerful, they are put into use in many areas, and one of the important implementations is the assistance with language learning, which is called CALL. In China, college English teaching has experienced lots of frustrations and difficulties. At the end of 20th century, the mode of CALL gradually appeared in China, but it was still immature and not systematic. At the beginning of 21th century that CALL was carried out extensively in China. During this period, many universities and colleges have tried experiments on online learning and many of them have got quite fruitful achievements. Henan Polytechnic University is one of them. After careful consideration, the university decided to adopt the English online learning system produced by Higher Education Press to carry out a comprehensive college English teaching reform in the non-English majors’ students, who are freshmen and sophomores. In the four academic semesters, students have 4 periods of classroom-based learning and another 2 periods of online learning every week. So far, the university has worked on the experiment for 10 years, and now, it is the high time to check the students’ attitudes toward English online learning. Only in this way can we get the valuable first-hand suggestions to improve online learning mode.
