Streszczenie:
Abstract Objectives To examine the association between dietary intake of beans and breast cancer in Nigerian women. Methods Overall 630 newly diagnosed patients with primary invasive breast cancer were age-matched (±5 years) with 630 controls from the Nigerian Integrative Epidemiology of Breast Cancer (NIBBLE) Study from 01/2014 to 07/2016. Dietary intakes were collected using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to derive daily intake of beans. The daily bean intakes included intakes of beans alone, bean porridge, bean cake (akara), bean pudding (moinmoin), beans and corn (adalu) and bean soup (gbegiri). We categorized the daily bean intake into low, medium and high equally based on the distribution. Additional covariates included occupation, education, wealth index, contraceptive use, menopause status, number of pregnancies, breastfeeding, Body Mass Index, Waist to Hip Ratio and physical activity. Conditional logistic regression models were utilized to estimate the crude and adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) of total beans intake per day and breast cancer. Results The mean (SD) age of the cases was 42.5 (10.1) and controls was 41.5 (9.2) years. Among controls, almost 36% consume a high intake of total bean compared to 30% among cases, whereas among the cases 37.3% consumed the low intake of total bean compared to 31.6% among controls. In the multivariable, we found a significant association between total beans intakes and breast cancer (OR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.74–0.97, p-value = 0.02). Comparing the highest category (approximately two portions or more a day) with the lowest category (less than one portion a day), the adjusted OR was 0.72 (95% CI: 0.52–0.98, p-value for trend = 0.04). Conclusions We found a significant association between high intakes of beans and reduce risks for breast cancer. Future studies are needed to evaluate the causality of this relationship and the specific component of beans that is responsible for this reduction. Streszczenie:
ABSTRACTWhile our fascination with understanding the past is sufficient to warrant an increased focus on synthesis, solutions to important problems facing modern society require understandings based on data that only archaeology can provide. Yet, even as we use public monies to collect ever-greater amounts of data, modes of research that can stimulate emergent understandings of human behavior have lagged behind. Consequently, a substantial amount of archaeological inference remains at the level of the individual project. We can more effectively leverage these data and advance our understandings of the past in ways that contribute to solutions to contemporary problems if we adapt the model pioneered by the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis to foster synthetic collaborative research in archaeology. We propose the creation of the Coalition for Archaeological Synthesis coordinated through a U.S.-based National Center for Archaeological Synthesis. The coalition will be composed of established public and private organizations that provide essential scholarly, cultural heritage, computational, educational, and public engagement infrastructure. The center would seek and administer funding to support collaborative analysis and synthesis projects executed through coalition partners. This innovative structure will enable the discipline to address key challenges facing society through evidentially based, collaborative synthetic research.

Streszczenie:
Although there is a body of literature around discipline specific capacity building research, less is known empirically around collaborative practice-based research that involves different healthcare disciplines participating in research together in an interprofessional manner in Academic Health Science Centers (AHSCs). This paper provides an overview of results from the mixed methods study and the subsequent strategies one teaching hospital has implemented to enhance collaborative practice-based research. A mixed methods design with a cross-sectional survey design and focus groups/interviews with clinicians and administrators was used. Study participants reported the value of, their role, experience, and use of research in daily practice and recommendations to enhance collaborative practice-based research. Study findings elucidated the current state and strategies to enhance collaborative practice-based research at an AHSC. Engaging clinicians in collaborative practice-based research provides a strategic advantage and return on investment to achieve the tripartite mission.

9120 Background: Incorporating psychosocial research into practice is challenging. Aim of this study is to assess the feasibility and effectiveness in real life of interventions which have been tested in RCTs and have demonstrated to improve pts psychosocial conditions Methods: This is an implementation study of five EBM interventions conducted in 28 centers. We adopted the model of Pronovost (BMJ 2008), which includes context analysis to identify local barriers; introduction of the interventions, and evaluation of how many pts receive the recommended interventions. Primary EPs: degree of implementation detected in a blinded fashion by external personnel. Interventions included: 1) EBM communication courses for doctors and nurses; 2) use of a question prompt list (QPL) for all pts; 3) creation of the Point of Information and Support (PIS) in the ward (J Clin Oncol 27:1794-99,2009); 4) identification of a referring nurse (RN) for informing and educating pts; 5) screening of distress and social needs. Results: In December 2008, 28 eligible centers applied to participate. 27 are evaluable and 1 is too early. 156 oncologists and 401 nurses attended the 3 days training course. A QPL was subjected to cross-cultural adaptation, yielding the first validated Italian QPL (BMC Health Serv Res 2010). 24 centers (89%) have successfully implemented the intervention; 3 centers failed for various reasons: internal conflicts of the staff, poor motivation, etc. Main results for each intervention are shown in the table. Conclusions: A successful implementation of EBM measure was obtained in the vast majority of oncology centers and yields to significant changes in the delivery of psychosocial care. Streszczenie:
Modern database systems have to process huge amounts of data and should provide results with low latency at the same time. To achieve this, data is nowadays typically hold completely in main memory, to benefit of its high bandwidth and low access latency that could never be reached with disks. Current in-memory databases are usually columnstores that exchange columns or vectors between operators and suffer from a high tuple reconstruction overhead. In this paper, we present the indexed table-at-a-time processing model that makes indexes the first-class citizen of the database system. The processing model comprises the concepts of intermediate indexed tables and cooperative operators, which make indexes the common data exchange format between plan operators. To keep the intermediate index materialization costs low, we employ optimized prefix trees that offer a balanced read/write performance. The indexed tableat-a-time processing model allows the efficient construction of composed operators like the multi-way-select-join-group. Such operators speed up the processing of complex OLAP queries so that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art in-memory databases.

Probabilistic-Write/Copy-Select (PWCS) is a novel synchronization scheme suggested by Nicholas Mc Guire which avoids expensive atomic operations for synchronizing access to shared objects. Instead, PWCS makes inconsistencies detectable and recoverable. It builds on the assumption that, for typical workloads, the probability for data races is very small. Mc Guire describes PWCS for multiple readers but only one writer of a shared data structure. In this paper, we report on the formal analysis of the PWCS protocol using a continuous-time Markov chain model and probabilistic model checking techniques. Besides the original PWCS protocol, we also considered a variant with multiple writers. The results were obtained by the model checker PRISM and served to identify scenarios in which the use of the PWCS protocol is justified by guarantees on the probability of data races. Moreover, the analysis showed several other quantitative properties of the PWCS protocol.

Streszczenie:
Network Coding is a new possibility to transmit data through a network. By combining different packets instead of simply forwarding, network coding offers the opportunity to reach the Min-Cut/Max-Flow capacity in multicast data transmissions. However, the basic schemes are vulnerable to so-called pollution attacks, where an attacker can jam large parts of the transmission by infiltrating only one bogus message. In the literature we found several approaches which aim at handling this kind of attack with different amounts of overhead. Though, the cost for a specific secure network coding scheme highly depends on the underlying network. The goal of this paper is on the one hand to describe which network parameters influence the efficiency of a certain scheme and on the other hand to provide concrete suggestions for selecting the most efficient secure network coding scheme considering a given network. We will illustrate that there does not exist “the best” secure network scheme concerning efficiency, but all selected schemes are more or less suited under certain network topologies.

Measuring the energy consumption of software components is a major building block for generating models that allow for energy-aware scheduling, accounting and budgeting. Current measurement techniques focus on coarse-grained measurements of application or system events. However, fine grain adjustments in particular in the operating-system kernel and in application-level servers require power profiles at the level of a single software function. Until recently, this appeared to be impossible due to the lacking fine grain resolution and high costs of measurement equipment. In this paper we report on our experience in using the Running Average Power Limit (RAPL) energy sensors available in recent Intel CPUs for measuring energy consumption of short code paths. We investigate the granularity at which RAPL measurements can be performed and discuss practical obstacles that occur when performing these measurements on complex modern CPUs. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to use the RAPL infrastructure to characterize the energy costs for decoding video slices.

In this paper, we analyze the four-node relay wiretap channel, where the relay performs amplify-and-forward. There is no direct link between transmitter and receiver available. The transmitter has multiple antennas, which assist in securing the transmission over both phases. In case of full channel state information (CSI), the transmitter can apply information leakage neutralization in order to prevent the eavesdropper from obtaining any information about the signal sent. This gets more challenging, if the transmitter has only an outdated estimate of the channel from the relay to the eavesdropper. For this case, we optimize the worst case secrecy rate by choosing intelligently the beamforming vectors and the power allocation at the transmitter and the relay.

The efficient and flexible management of large datasets is one of the core requirements of modern business applications. Having access to consistent and up-to-date information is the foundation for operational, tactical, and strategic decision making. Within the last few years, the database community sparked a large number of extremely innovative research projects to push the envelope in the context of modern database system architectures. In this paper, we outline requirements and influencing factors to identify some of the hot research topics in database management systems. We argue that—even after 30 years of active database research—the time is right to rethink some of the core architectural principles and come up with novel approaches to meet the requirements of the next decades in data management. The sheer number of diverse and novel (e.g., scientific) application areas, the existence of modern hardware capabilities, and the need of large data centers to become more energy-efficient will be the drivers for database research in the years to come.

Electronic systems of the future require a very high bandwidth communications infrastructure within the system. This way the massive amount of compute power which will be available can be inter-connected to realize future powerful advanced electronic systems. Today, electronic inter-connects between 3D chip-stacks, as well as intra-connects within 3D chip-stacks are approaching data rates of 100 Gbit/s soon. Hence, the question to be answered is how to efficiently design the communications infrastructure which will be within electronic systems. Within this paper approaches and results for building this infrastructure for future electronics are addressed.

Preventing the success of active attacks is of essential importance for network coding since even the infiltration of one single corrupted data packet can jam large parts of the network. The existing approaches for network coding schemes preventing such pollution attacks can be divided into two categories: utilize cryptographic approaches or utilize redundancy similar to error correction coding. Within this paper, we compared both paradigms concerning efficiency of data transmission under various circumstances. Particularly, we considered an attacker of a certain strength as well as the influence of the generation size. The results are helpful for selecting a suitable approach for network coding taking into account both security against pollution attacks and efficiency.

Reliability in terms of functional properties from the safety-liveness spectrum is an indispensable requirement of low-level operating-system (OS) code. However, with evermore complex and thus less predictable hardware, quantitative and probabilistic guarantees become more and more important. Probabilistic model checking is one technique to automatically obtain these guarantees. First experiences with the automated quantitative analysis of low-level operating-system code confirm the expectation that the naive probabilistic model checking approach rapidly reaches its limits when increasing the numbers of processes. This paper reports on our work-in-progress to tackle the state explosion problem for low-level OS-code caused by the exponential blow-up of the model size when the number of processes grows. We studied the symmetry reduction approach and carried out our experiments with a simple test-and-test-and-set lock case study as a representative example for a wide range of protocols with natural inter-process dependencies and long-run properties. We quickly see a state-space explosion for scenarios where inter-process dependencies are insignificant. However, once inter-process dependencies dominate the picture models with hundred and more processes can be constructed and analysed.

Streszczenie:
Abstract This chapter book summarizes the major achievements of the five topical focus areas, Structural Cooling, Aft-Body Flows, Combustion Chamber, Thrust Nozzle, and Thrust-Chamber Assembly of the Collaborative Research Center (Sonderforschungsbereich) Transregio 40. Obviously, only sample highlights of each of the more than twenty individual projects can be given here and thus the interested reader is invited to read their reports which again are only a summary of the entire achievements and much more information can be found in the referenced publications. The structural cooling focus area included results from experimental as well as numerical research on transpiration cooling of thrust chamber structures as well as film cooling supersonic nozzles. The topics of the aft-body flow group reached from studies of classical flow separation to interaction of rocket plumes with nozzle structures for sub-, trans-, and supersonic conditions both experimentally and numerically. Combustion instabilities, boundary layer heat transfer, injection, mixing and combustion under real gas conditions and in particular the investigation of the impact of trans-critical conditions on propellant jet disintegration and the behavior under trans-critical conditions were the subjects dealt with in the combustion chamber focus area. The thrust nozzle group worked on thermal barrier coatings and life prediction methods, investigated cooling channel flows and paid special attention to the clarification and description of fluid-structure-interaction phenomena I nozzle flows. The main emphasis of the focal area thrust-chamber assembly was combustion and heat transfer investigated in various model combustors, on dual-bell nozzle phenomena and on the definition and design of three demonstrations for which the individual projects have contributed according to their research field.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Since the beginning of the German collaborative research center SFB-TRR 40 in 2008 ArianeGroup has been involved as industrial partner and supported the research activities with its expertise. For the final funding period ArianeGroup actively contributes to the SFB-TRR 40 with the self-financed project K4. Within project K4 virtual thrust chamber demonstrators have been defined that allow the application of the attained knowledge of the entire collaborative research center to state-of-the-art numerical benchmark cases. Furthermore, ArianeGroup uses these testcases to continue the development of its in-house spray combustion and performance analysis tool Rocflam3. Unique within the collaborative research center fully three-dimensional conjugate heat transfer computations have been performed for a full-scale 100 kN upper stage thrust chamber. The strong three-dimensionality of the temperature field in the structure resulting from injection element and cooling channel configuration is displayed.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Rocket wake flows were under investigation within the Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TRR40 since the year 2009. The current paper summarizes the work conducted during its third and final funding period from 2017 to 2020. During that phase, focus was laid on establishing a new test environment at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Cologne in order to improve the similarity of experimental rocket wake flow–jet interaction testing by utilizing hydrogen–oxygen combustion implemented into the wind tunnel model. The new facility was characterized during tests with the rocket combustor model HOC1 in static environment. The tests were conducted under relevant operating conditions to demonstrate the design’s suitability. During the first wind tunnel tests, interaction of subsonic ambient flow at Mach 0.8 with a hot exhaust jet of approx. 920 K was compared to previously investigated cold plume interaction tests using pressurized air at ambient temperature. The comparison revealed significant differences in the dynamic response of the wake flow field on the different types of exhaust plume simulation.

Streszczenie:
The Advanced Gas Turbine Systems Research (AGTSR) program is a university-industry research consortium that was established in September 1992. The AGTSR program is sponsored by the Department of Energy–Morgantown Energy Technology Center. The South Carolina Energy Research and Development Center (SCERDC) heads the effort and is responsible for administering and managing the AGTSR program, which is expected to continue to the year 2000. At present, 67 American Universities are AGTSR Performing Members, representing 35 states. Two RFP’s have already been announced and the third RFP was released in December, 1994. There are presently 23 research subcontracts underway at Performing Member universities. Approximately seven new subcontracts are expected to be awarded in 1995. The research is focused on topics as defined by the AGTSR Industry Review Board composed of five major cost-sharing U.S. gas turbine manufacturers, including EPRI and GRI as advisors. All university projects must be relevant to advancing stationary gas turbines for the next generation of electrical power generation systems. Research areas being addressed include: turbine heat transfer, combustion modeling and instability, thermal barrier coatings, aerodynamic losses, and advanced cycle analyses. This paper will present the objectives and benefits of the AGTSR program, progress achieved to date, and future planned activity in fiscal year 1995.

Streszczenie:
The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) SFB-TRR 75 was established in January 2010 to focus on the dynamicsof basic drop processes, and in particular on processes involving extreme boundary conditions, for example, near thermodynamic critical conditions, very low temperatures, under strong electric fields or in situations involving extremely large gradients. The CRC is a joint initiative of the University of Stuttgart, the TU Darmstadt and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Lampoldshausen, operating with 17 projects structured into three main research areas and involving researchers from numerous faculties: Mathematics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Informatics and Computer Sciences. Some of the topics pursued at the CRC include•The behaviour of supercooled and potentially electrified droplets in clouds•The impact of Supercooled Large Droplets (SLD) on aircraft icing•The behaviour of strongly electrified drops on insulator surfaces, which can be found on high voltagepower lines, affecting the partial discharge behaviour and performance and durability of the insulator.•Trans-critical injection conditions of fuel with flash boiling in rocket combustion chambers•Atomization and vaporization of droplets at high pressures and temperature, as occurring in futurecombustion systemsThis article provides an overview of the projects being carried out at the SFB-TRR 75 and highlights scientific results from selected subprojects. The main purpose of the paper is to familiarize colleagues with this extensive and dedicated research effort in the area of drop dynamics and to motivate and initiate future collaboration with others in this field.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/ILASS2017.2017.4597
