Streszczenie:
Real-time collaborative programming is an emerging approach that supports a team of programmers to view and edit shared source code at the same time. Each programmer can edit any part of the source code, and changes become instantly visible at other collaborating sites. With a broad range of application scenarios and benefits, real-time collaborative programming has attracted increasing interest from academia and industry. Lightweight integrated development environments (lightweight IDEs) have rapidly grown in popularity in the recent years, but there are serious problems and limitations with existing real-time collaboration support for lightweight IDEs. In this study, we contribute a novel real-time collaborative programming environment named CoVSCode that supports unconstrained and flexible real-time collaboration based on Visual Studio Code, one of the most popular and widely used lightweight IDEs. We present design objectives and rationales, the workflow and functional design from collaborating programmers’ perspectives, major technical issues and solutions, and prototype implementation, as well as a set of experimental evaluations that have demonstrated the technical feasibility and good performance of the prototype system. All approaches, techniques and solutions derived in this work are generic, which can also be applied in building real-time collaborative programming environments for other lightweight IDEs.

Streszczenie:
Real-time collaborative programming enables a group of programmers to edit shared source code at the same time, which significantly complements the traditional non-real-time collaborative programming supported by version control systems. However, one critical issue with this emerging technique is the lack of integration with non-real-time collaboration. Specifically, contributions from multiple programmers in a real-time collaboration session cannot be distinguished and accurately recorded in the version control system. In this study, we propose a scheme that integrates real-time and non-real-time collaborative programming with a novel workflow, and contribute enabling techniques to realize such integration. As a proof-of-concept, we have successfully implemented two prototype systems named CoEclipse and CoIDEA, which allow programmers to closely collaborate in a real-time fashion while preserving the work's compatibility with traditional non-real-time collaboration. User evaluation and performance experiments have confirmed the feasibility of the approach and techniques, demonstrated the good system performance, and presented the satisfactory usability of the prototypes.

Streszczenie:
This paper presents a study called collaborative-adversarial pair (CAP) programming which is an alternative to pair programming (PP). Its objective is to exploit the advantages of pair programming while at the same time downplaying its disadvantages. Unlike traditional pairs, where two people work together in all the phases of software development, CAPs start by designing together; splitting into independent test construction and code implementation roles; then joining again for testing. An empirical study was conducted in fall 2008 and in spring 2009 with twenty-six computer science and software engineering senior and graduate students at Auburn University. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups (CAP/experimental group and PP/control group). The subjects used Eclipse and JUnit to perform three programming tasks with different degrees of complexity. The results of this experiment point in favor of CAP development methodology and do not support the claim that pair programming in general reduces the software development duration, overall software development cost or increases the program quality or correctness.

Streszczenie:
AbstractIn order to promote the practice of co-creation, a real-time collaboration (RTC) version of the popular block-based programming (BBP) learning environment, MIT App Inventor (MAI), was proposed and implemented. RTC overcomes challenges related to non-collocated group work, thus lowering barriers to cross-region and multi-user collaborative software development. An empirical study probed into the differential impact on self-efficacy and collaborative behavior of learners in the environment depending upon their disciplinary background. The study serves as an example of the use of learning analytics to explore the frequent behavior patterns of adult learners, in this case specifically while performing BBP in MAI integrated with RTC. This study compares behavior patterns that are collaborative or individual that occurred on the platform, and investigates the effects of collaboration on learners working within the RTC depending on whether they were CS-majors or not. We highlight advantages of the new MAI design during multi-user programming in the online RTC based on the connections between the interface design and BBP as illustrated by two significant behavior patterns found in this instructional experiment. First, the multi-user programming in the RTC allowed multiple tasks to happen at the same time, which promoted engagement in joint behavior. For example, one user arranged components in the interface design while another dragged blocks to complete the program. Second, this study confirmed that the Computer Programming Self-Efficacy (CPSE) was similar for individual and multi-user programming overall. The CPSE of the homogeneous CS-major groups engaged in programming within the RTC was higher than that of the homogeneous non-CS-major groups and heterogeneous groups. There was no significant difference between the CPSE of the homogenous non-CS group and the CPSE of the heterogeneous groups, regardless of whether they were engaged in individual programming or collaborative programming within their groups. The results of the study support the value of engaging with MAI collaboratively, especially for CS-majors, and suggest directions for future work in RTC design.

Palabras Claves: asignación de recursos, procesos colaborativos, redes colaborativas, programación matemáticaResources allocation methodology for the establishment of collaborative processes: Investment Model for SMEsAbstract: Over the last years, an increasing number of collaborative networks have appeared due to the change in the enterprisesí modus operandi, from competition to collaboration. In collaborative networks, members are able to achieve those objectives that would not be possible, or would have higher costs, to reach if organisations individually act. Thus, collaborative partners jointly work to achieve common or compatible objectives. Therefore, an increasing number of collaborative practices, among the partners in a network, have appeared as a result of the acquired advantages that stem from collaboration. Collaborative business processes are commonly associated with standardised schemas and collaborative mechanisms, used to facilitate the decisions coordination and exchange information among network partners. The business processes performed within the partners in a network are becoming more and more collaborative. However, establishing collaborative processes is not an easy task due to the necessary requirements to carry them out. The endogenous characteristics of enterprises are a challenge for the creation of appropriate conditions to establish collaboration. Specially, for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) the establishment of collaborative processes is a difficult task to perform, due to the implied risks and the lack of capabilities and resources owned. Therefore, the authors find, in this area, a gap to fill in order to lead the enterprisesí efforts to efficiently perform collaborative processes. One of the relevant issues to deal with when the enterprises are willing to establish collaborative relationships is identifying which are the processes to collaboratively perform and with which partners collaborate. If collaborative enterprises could identify both issues, what processes and partners, they could easily initiate the collaboration. Nevertheless, there is no methodology that provides enterprises this knowledge, causing failures in the initial phase of collaborative processes establishment. In order to identify the processes to carry on in a collaborative way and define the action projects to be activated in order to establish this collaboration, a methodology has been developed in this paper. The methodology consist of three phases (i) identification of the potential processes in which collaborate, (ii) definition of the action projects, that describe the resources, guidelines and tools in broad outline to provide a guide to establish the potential collaborative processes and (iii) a mathematical lineal programming model to support the selection of the, previously defined, action projects in which invest, as a way to allocate the resources to deal with the establishment of collaborative processes. This linear programming model will allow enterprises to identify in which action projects invest, to efficiently deal with the star ting up process of collaboration. The proposed methodology not only focuses on the resources allocation in one enterprise, but also deals with the resources allocation in the context of collaborative enterprise networks. The methodology covers the resources allocation process from the recognition of potential processes in which initiate collaboration to the identification of the appropriate resources to carry out such collaborative processes. Keywords: resources allocation, collaborative processes, collaborative network, mathematical programming.

Streszczenie:
Collaborative learning is pointed out as an effective approach to reduce apprentices’ difficulties that arise during the effort to learn computer programming. In a collaborative learning process, the formation of groups is a fundamental activity and one of the most complex, because grouping students randomly is ineffective in obtaining real collaboration. PQAS and GroupOrganizer were developed to address the lack of tools that support group formation in the context of collaborative learning of computer programming. These tools form groups based on the theories of socio-cognitive conflict and learning styles. In order to stimulate the social-cognitive conflict, PQAS groups students with significant differences in programming style. GroupOrganizer extends PQAS and forms groups also considering students’ learning styles. Two experiments involving students taking introductory programming courses provide evidences that the adopted approaches contribute to increase students’ learning both in terms of programming style and workgroup skills.

There is a currently a shortage of computer science professionals and this shortage is projected to continue into the foreseeable future as not enough students are selecting computer science majors. Researchers and policy-makers agree that development of this career pipeline starts in elementary school. Our study examined which collaborative programming setup, pair programming (two students collaborate on one computer) or side-by-side programming (two students collaborate on the same program from two computers), fifth-grade students preferred. We also sought to understand why students preferred one method over the other and explored ideas on how to effectively design a collaborative programming environment for this age group. Our study had participants first engage in five instructional days, alternating between pair and side-by-side programming, and then conducted focus groups. We found that students overwhelmingly preferred side-by-side programming. We explain this using self-determination theory which states that behavior is motivated by three psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and psychological relatedness which side-by-side programming was better able to meet.

Modularisation is a well-known method of reducing code complexity, yet architects are unlikely to modularise their visual scripts. In this paper the impact that modules used in visual scripts have on the architectural design process is investigated with regard to legibility, collaboration, reuse and design modification. Through a series of thinking-aloud interviews, and through the collaborative design and construction of the parametric Dermoid pavilion, modules are found to impact the culture of collaborative design in architecture through relatively minor alterations to how architects organise visual scripts.

Software systems are getting larger and more complex, while the requirements are becoming vaguer and more rapidly changing. These trends make current software development more and more likely a team work. To integrate multiple developers into a coherent structured management process and make team software development a positive-sum game for both higher productivity and better quality, many team soft ware development methodologies have been proposed and practised. An emerging methodology is collaborative programming, which allows a group of programmers to work together on the same source code for design, implementation of individual components, and integration of individual components. Compared with other team software methodologies that only address needs in some phases or situations, collaborative programming is more adaptive to the variety of different phases or situations in a team software development process. A core technical component in collaborative programming is collaborative editing, which allows a group of programmers to view and edit the same source code. To support different phases or situations in an Internet-based collaborative programming process, collaborative editing must meet the requirements of supporting unconstrained, responsive, real-time collaborative editing; unconstrained, syncretic, non-real-time collaborative editing; and smooth, flexible switching between real-time and non-real-time collaborative editing. This thesis research contributes several novel techniques to address these requirements, and an Internet-based collaborative programming environment to integrate those techniques. These research contributions have advanced state-of-the-art technologies on col laborative editing for supporting Internet-based collaborative programming. First, we contribute a collaborative highlighting gestural communication technique for unconstrained, responsive, real-time collaborative editing. This technique is particularly effective in improving the quality of real-time interaction on text-based source code documents. Streszczenie:
Users who can program computers can use their computer more effectively than those who can not. While much research has examined how to help users easily program computers, two methods that show promise have not yet been thoroughly investigated in the context of children's programming environments. The first method provides users with multiple representations of a computer program. Providing multiple representations lets users choose a representation close to their own mental model of computer programming and helps them transfer their knowledge from one domain to another. The second method provides support for collaboration. When users collaborate they build a shared understanding of a computer program and they can learn from teachers and more competent peers. This thesis presents an investigation into these two methods: collaborative and multiple-notation programming environments for children. Our target users are children aged eight to twelve years. The contributions described in this thesis are: providing an analysis of how programming environments use different representations of computer programs; describing two evaluations (one of collaboration and one of multiple notations), and introducing our programming environment, Mulspren. The analysis describes three cognitive gulfs that can create problems for users when programming and identifies eight factors related to notation use that risk creating these gulfs. The first evaluation finds that children can read and understand a conventional-style notation faster than an English-like notation, but that they prefer the English-like notation. The second evaluation finds that the type of collaboration support present in a collaborative environment does not reliably affect how well children learn to solve a puzzle. The analysis and two evaluations influenced the design of our programming environment: Mulspren. Mulspren users can interact with two different notations at the same time, and can move between the notations seamlessly. We call this programming style 'dual notation programming.'

Streszczenie:
Extreme programming is an agile software development process, which has gained a lot of publicity the last couple of years. It has also brought Pair Programming into new light. Research and experiments have shown that the usage of Pair Programming can increase the quality in software development. People who used Pair Programming are usually satisfied using it and they are also more confident in their solutions. Having a pair colleague is not redundancy, people bring the best out of each other and they produce better solutions. Wages for employees are today heavy costs for companies but quality and time aspects in software development become more and more important. A quantitative survey has been conducted among professionals and students, both with and without Pair Programming experience. People surveyed have very low resistance from the start when using Pair Programming. They actually find benefits from it compared to being singles, but they think it should not be used on every task and at every time. This report investigates if Pair Programming is a technique to increase quality and productivity within software development. We also address business related aspects compared to the usage of Pair Programming as well as management aspects to see if we can find other synergy effects from the use of Pair Programming.

This thesis documents the creation of a family literacy program developed with, and for, a Haida community on the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. The field of family literacy is juxtaposed with the historical and contemporary school experiences of the community and presented as a means of addressing the imbalance between Indigenous and Western knowledge systems currently offered through the public education system. Both Indigenous and Western research methods are utilized through a process designed to involve the community in the reconstruction of an already-existing community family literacy program, PALS (Parents as Literacy Supporters). The metaphor of a circle, representing the six Haida values of interconnectedness, seeking wise counsel, reciprocity, balance, respect, and responsibility, is used to guide the research in addition to serving as the foundation for a new, culturally responsive, version of PALS.

Streszczenie:
This article focuses attention on a critical need for more evidence-based social emotional learning (SEL) programs for middle school students. First, we explore the definition of SEL, pointing out how it has evolved as our world has changed. We review key SEL domains and skills and describe universal school-based SEL programming as one approach to fostering students’ SEL competencies. We highlight the ongoing need for evidence-based middle school SEL programs by demonstrating how few programs meet the rigorous What Works Clearinghouse (WWC), Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and Blueprints standards for evidence. We extend our summary of these programs by noting that even when positive effects have been demonstrated, these effects were often observed in a single domain, such as substance use, or outnumbered by null effects, which undermines efforts to understand program effectiveness. We conclude by considering the unique developmental needs of early adolescents and providing recommendations for the development or refinement of SEL programs that target middle school students.

Streszczenie:
To improve traffic performance and safety, the ability to measure traffic accurately and effectively, including motorists and other vulnerable road users, at road intersections is needed. A past study conducted by the Center for Road Safety has demonstrated that it is feasible to detect and track various types of road users using a LiDAR-based system called TScan. This project aimed to progress towards a real-world implementation of TScan by building two trailer-based prototypes with full end-user documentation. The previously developed detection and tracking algorithms have been modified and converted from the research code to its implementational version written in the C++ programming language. Two trailer-based TScan units have been built. The design of the prototype was iterated multiple times to account for component placement, ease of maintenance, etc. The expansion of the TScan system from a one single-sensor unit to multiple units with multiple LiDAR sensors necessitated transforming all the measurements into a common spatial and temporal reference frame. Engineering applications for performing traffic counts, analyzing speeds at intersections, and visualizing pedestrian presence data were developed. The limitations of the existing SSAM for traffic conflicts analysis with computer simulation prompted the research team to develop and implement their own traffic conflicts detection and analysis technique that is applicable to real-world data. Efficient use of the development system requires proper training of its end users. An INDOT-CRS collaborative process was developed and its execution planned to gradually transfer the two TScan prototypes to INDOT’s full control. This period will be also an opportunity for collecting feedback from the end user and making limited modifications to the system and documentation as needed.

A simple Unicode-based lexical syntax for programming language identifiers using characters from international scripts (currently Latin, Greek and Cyrillic) is proposed. What makes such cosmopolitan identifiers special is that each identifier is equivalent to a uniquely determined simple identifier consisting only of ASCII characters. This makes collaboration in an international setting easier, especially in contexts where such identifiers are not only used by professional programmers, but are also present in the domain of normal users, for example through scriptable applications.

I propose a simple Unicode-based lexical syntax for programming language identifiers using characters from international scripts (currently Latin, Greek and Cyrillic). What makes such cosmopolitan identifiers special is that each identifier is either equivalent to a uniquely determined simple identifier consisting only of ASCII characters, or that the identifier is a symbolic identifier. This makes collaboration in an international setting easier, especially in contexts where such identifiers are not only used by professional programmers, but are also present in the domain of normal users, for example through scriptable applications.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that bioinformatics--a multidisciplinary field that combines biological knowledge with computer programming concerned with the acquisition, storage, analysis, and dissemination of biological data--has a fundamental role in scientific research strategies in all disciplines involved in fighting the virus and its variants. It aids in sequencing and annotating genomes and their observed mutations; analyzing gene and protein expression; simulation and modeling of DNA, RNA, proteins and biomolecular interactions; and mining of biological literature, among many other critical areas of research. Studies suggest that bioinformatics skills in the Latin American and Caribbean region are relatively incipient, and thus its scientific systems cannot take full advantage of the increasing availability of bioinformatic tools and data. This dataset is a catalog of bioinformatics software for researchers and professionals working in life sciences. It includes more than 300 different tools for varied uses, such as data analysis, visualization, repositories and databases, data storage services, scientific communication, marketplace and collaboration, and lab resource management. Most tools are available as web-based or desktop applications, while others are programming libraries. It also includes 10 suggested entries for other third-party repositories that could be of use.

As a means to reduce discrimination and promote the economic empowerment of women, there is a growing understanding that tax policy, tax administration and tax research need to be gender transformative. Recognising this need, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is reshaping and building its approach to tax and gender programming. K4D’s Tax and Gender Learning Journey brought together tax and gender teams to identify other tax and gender stakeholders and collaboratively craft a future approach to tax and gender for FCDO and partners. Initial exploration of the early impact from activities that have taken place amongst partner organisations in Pakistan suggests K4D’s inputs have the potential to bolster intended social reforms across the country’s revenue and other government departments.

Streszczenie:
Despite increasing recognition of public health and rights issues associated with human trafficking globally and in the United States following the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, there has been limited research on how to systematically strengthen service access for survivors of sex and labor trafficking. The experience of service providers may provide insight into how trafficking survivor responses and service networks function in California’s Bay Area. This study explores provider perspectives on existing service networks and collaboration dynamics, including the barriers to and enablers of long-term service provision and survivor follow-up. A participatory research design included qualitative interviews with key informants working at nongovernmental organizations, organizational website reviews, and consultation with network service providers in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. This study approach allowed for eliciting in-depth reflections of service provision, collective generation of stakeholder mapping, and consensus-driven recommendations arising from barriers and enablers to anti-trafficking service provision. This report enhances stakeholder awareness of existing organizational and policy resources and offers insights into research and programming on how anti-trafficking service response networks can be strengthened to provide survivor-centric support in the long-term.

Streszczenie:
As the global community works toward the Sustainable Development Goals, closer integration between governance and sectoral interventions offers a promising, yet unproven avenue for improving health service delivery. We interrogate what value an integrated governance approach, intentionally combining governance and sectoral investments in strategic collaboration, adds to health service readiness and delivery using data from a study in Senegal. Our quasi-experimental research design compared treatment and control communes to determine the value added of an integrated governance approach in Senegal compared to health interventions alone. Our analysis shows that integrated governance is associated with improvements in some health service delivery dimensions, specifically, in aspects of health facility access and quality. These findings—that health facilities are more open, with higher quality infrastructure and staff more frequently following correct procedures after integrated governance treatment—suggests a higher level of service readiness. We suggest that capacity building of governance structures and an emphasis on social accountability could explain the added value of integrating governance and health programming. These elements may help overcome a critical bottleneck between citizens and local government often seen with narrower sector or governance-only approaches. We discuss implications for health services in Senegal, international development program design, and further research.

Streszczenie:
Conducting research in the Sahel has become more challenging over the past 10 years, and the continuing deterioration of the security situation has restricted access to many areas. This SIPRI Insights paper provides an overview of the main challenges for researchers when conducting data collection in conflict-affected areas. The paper employs a case study of a humanitarian protection project that SIPRI has been working on in the Liptako-Gourma region. The project was designed in collaboration with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and three local research partners: the Centre for Democratic Governance (CGD) in Burkina Faso, Point Sud in Mali and the Laboratoire d’Études et de Recherche sur les Dynamiques Sociales et le Développement Local (LASDEL) in Niger. Using the case study, the paper identifies and outlines how the project addressed specific challenges. The paper also highlights key considerations for researchers to take into account when carrying out data collection and fieldwork in conflict zones. Evidence-based research can influence humanitarian and development initiatives and support shifts in policy and programming. The bottom-up research approach gives a voice to communities and alternative perspectives and advances evidence-based solutions that are locally driven, meaningful and sustainable for target populations.
