The article represents trends and results of world investigations for safety of textile materials for humans and environment. The algorithm for identification of potential influence vector of chemical emissions from textile and the environmentally aimed methods based on the alternative chemical substances for textile wet processing were presented. Using the procedure for oleophobic effect determination, the oil resistance levels of a number of modern fabrics for clothes were established. The experimental research results of the oil products concentration in the textile materials after chemical treatment based on the method of the capillary gas chromatography were presented. It was found out that hydrocarbons from C14H30 Tetradecane to С36Н74 Hexatriacontane are the main components with high level of contaminants concentration. The average values of hydrocarbon concentration on the cleaned up samples for the main areas of the clothe surface were determined. Accumulation of residual contaminations, based on saturated hydrocarbons (С17Н36 – С25Н52 block) and related special-purpose clothes areas, was identified. Recommendations for target-oriented correlation of the clothes protective properties were proposed. UWO (unified work order). This study aims to design and develop denim fabrics with enhanced mechanical and impact abrasion resistance performance using different materials, yarn types and fabric constructions. It was aimed to reach the standard impact abrasion resistance requirements of motorcycle protective clothing for Level 1 in high impact areas of the body (zones 1 and 2), such as hip and knee areas. The existence of cotton/Cordura® yarn in warp and T400 polyester yarn in the weft and the use of higher yarn densities increased the performance in tensile strength and impact abrasion resistance, compared to a classical cotton denim fabric. The use of coarser yarns and fabrics with a double weave construction increased impact abrasion resistance compared to single layer cloths. The double and backed cloth samples developed with cotton/Cordura® and Kevlar®/polyester yarns in their construction showed impact abrasion resistance times over 4 s and reached the “EN 13595-2:2002 Level 1 abrasion resistance” standard requirement.

The aim was to study amount of attenuation of input signal at the hearing aid (HA) or cochlear implant sound processor (SP) microphone by different protective tools or clothes. Materials and methods. The acoustic measurements were conducted in the soundproof cabin using artificial head with HA/SP and different protective tools, which can influence on microphone function. Probe microphone was integrated in the microphone input of SP and connected with HA verification system. Results. The biggest amount of signal attenuation was observed using water-resistant cases for SP. Changes affect the speech spectrum, therefore using such protective tools can lead to decrease of speech intelligibility. Maximum attenuation was 9.36±0.33 dB at 4000 Hz. Non-hermetic membrane protective cases gave maximum attenuation 7.67±0.18 dB (5000 Hz). Clothes which cover head lead to significant change of signal at microphone up to 9.24±0.16 dB mostly at high-frequencies, which less influences on speech intelligibility. The results confirm that clothes and protective tools for HA of SP show significant attenuation of sounds.

Heat stress is well-known safety and health hazards, especially for workers wearing Encapsulating Protective Clothing (EPC) in high temperature environment. The body heat and sweat would form a micro-environment climate between the skin and EPC during EPC works. Currentenly, the monitoring of thermal exposure is still limited to the assessment of the external environment. This research used personal heat stress monitor, Polar-rs800cx heart rate monitor, electronic scales, and subjective discomfort scale to explore the skin temperature, tympanic temperature, micro-environment temperature, heart rate, sweat rate, and subjective discomfort of six males under different external environment temperature (21℃ or 29℃), EPC wearing condition (not worn or worn), workload (moderate load or heavy load), and repetition (1st or 2nd). This study also compare the differences between the external and micro environments. The results showed that the “external environment temperature” and “EPC wearing condition” have significant effects on skin temperature, tympanic temperature, heart rate, subjective discomfort, and micro-environment temperature. “Workload” showed significant effect on heart rate. “Repetition” showed significant effect on tympanic temperature and subjective discomfort. Significant differences between the external and micro environments were found in this study. The micro-environment temperatures were significantly higher than the external environment temperatures.

Streszczenie:
Within the last decade, there have been numerous innovations in integrating nanotechnology for various sports applications. Nanotechnology is a technology discipline that deals with dimensions and tolerances of less than 100 nanometers, particularly manipulating single atoms and molecules. Nanotechnology has profoundly impacted sports competition like any other revolutionary innovation in materials science. The emergence of nanomaterials and nanotechnology has greatly improved athlete's performance. Sports equipment is becoming more humanized with the development of nanotechnology because it is more convenient, protective, and rational. Commercial nanotechnology-enable sports products, including ski goggle, ski wax, tennis racket, tennis ball, golf ball, bicycle, sportswear, shoe, and more, have offered several benefits to sports sectors in comparison to traditional sports equipment and clothes. These have enhanced the athletes' performance to multifunctional features of sportswear including water resistance, anti-microbial, anti-odor, anti-stain, anti-UV, heat, and cold resistance. This chapter has focused on minimizing the gap between understanding the scientific implications and applications of nanotechnology to sports equipment and clothing, and the characterization and impact of nanomaterials in the sports industry.

It reviews the argument of the book by chapter, then explores a possible “Ambedkarian” model for advancing the development of democratic institutions and forms of political humility beyond the state. Such a model would focus on softening barriers and promoting interaction between national communities, while promoting some types of broader identification as a means of advancing rights protections. Abstract This chapter addresses several provocative potential modifications to the current protective scope of the clause. First, whether the clause should remain applicable to only criminal laws, a central holding of the Supreme Court’s seminal decision in Calder v. Bull (1798); second, whether the clause prohibits only the four kinds of retroactive laws specified in Calder; third, whether the clause only pertains to “laws” enacted by legislatures, not also legal dictates emanating from other branches of government; and fourth, finally, whether doctrine should continue to except laws deemed “procedural” from the coverage of the clause. The respective proposals are discussed as are the potential difficulties that might arise if adopted. The chapter closes with a discussion of the many critically important shifts occurring over time in the nation since the Framing Era, and the role and function of its three branches of government, which together heighten the importance of the modifications suggested.

The article aims to analyse one of the specific objects of Udmurt traditional culture, chuk (in southern dialects) / tug (in northern dialects), i.e. red thread/yarn; a bunch or bundle of different coloured threads, fringes, ribbons, shreds; towels, bedspreads, and kerchiefs. The multifunctional nature of the object is revealed in everyday and ritual contexts; it can be of different forms and convey various meanings. Depending on the situation, chuk is regarded as a label, a protective charm, a sacrifice gift, or a tangible symbol of a substitute for the human soul. In everyday situations chuk is used in apotropaic magic and folk medicine. For example, red thread/yarn is worn around the ring finger to cure a sty, or it can be worn on an infant’s right wrist to protect him or her against the evil eye. A bunch of wool or linen threads is attached to knitted and woven things when their pattern is copied. The custom of marking young animals with brightly coloured strips of material, usually red, has survived to this day. Chuk is an essential attribute in the Udmurt calendar rites of the spring and summer cycles, wedding ceremonies and recruit rites. In calendar rituals chuk is recognised as a kind of sacrificial offering or gift. Praising flourishing nature alongside youth and early adulthood, the rites of welcoming spring and summer (Vöy, Shrovetide; Akashka/Byddzh’ynnal, Easter; Gershyd, Whitsunday) are regularly marked by the offering of different types of cloth (towels, kerchiefs, head towels for young married women) to mark passage through different stage of life. At different stages of the wedding ceremony (including pre- and post-wedding) the semantics of chuk depends on how it correlates with the participants of the ceremony: in regard to the bride chuk is definitely recognised as a gift, in regard to the groom’s relatives and friends as a way to personify a humorous image of strangers. In recruits’ rites chuk is hammered into the main ceiling beam of the recruit’s house and serves as a material symbol of, or substitute for, the human soul of the recruit, combining the functions of a label, a protective charm and a sacrifice.

Vitamin D known for its vital role in diverse biological function such as calcium and phosphorus homeostasis, also exert an anticoagulant effect emphasizing its essential role in the thrombosis pathogenesis. Thrombosis is the formation and propagation of a blood clot or thrombus either in the arterial or the venous system resulting in several severe complications. Various studies have also reported the association of vitamin D deficiency with the increased incidences of thromboembolism. This may be in part due to its anticoagulant effects through upregulation of thrombomodulin, an anticoagulant glycoprotein, and downregulation of Tissue Factor, a critical coagulation factor. The protective effects of vitamin D and its receptor in endothelial cells may further explain some of the reported beneficial effects of vitamin D in the prevention or treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, the immunomodulatory role of vitamin D has been observed through its ability to alter the secretion of inflammatory cytokines that can induce a procoagulant milieu by multiple pathways. Therefore, it becomes pertinent to discuss the close link between vitamin D and human health and to improve our knowledge of the molecular pathways regulated or influenced by vitamin D and its associated metabolites.

Streszczenie:
Fire protective clothing is crucial in many applications, in military/government (Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Law Enforcement) and industry (working with furnaces, casting, machining and welding). Fire resistant clothes provide protection to those who are at risk for exposure to fire hazards (intense heat and flames) and provide inert barrier between the skin and fire and shields the user from direct exposure to fire and irradiation. Flame retardant and chemical protective apparel consumption was 997 million m2 in 2015. This market size expected to grow more due to substantial increase in military and industrial demand. Advanced materials have long history in these areas to protect human life against the hazards. There are two main application techniques for producing fire resistant clothing: 1) Using fire retardant materials directly in the textile, and 2) Spray coating on the garments. Over the time these physically and chemically treated cloths begin to degrade and become less protective due to UV and moisture exposure, abrasion, wear, and laundry effects which will shorten the useful wear life of those cloths. The study compared the improved fire resistance of fabrics when treated with recycled graphene solution.

Streszczenie:
There are different types of protective clothing available to protect human body from different external conditions such as rain, dust, direct sun radiation, insect access and their bites. The problem of overheating of the body may arise when such proactive clothing is required to wear in warm environment or heavy workload conditions. This is because the outer layer of cloth lacks sufficient air permeability, which causes the accumulation of warm and moist air at the body and causes discomfort. To enhance air exchange, various closable vents and open spaces of clothing have been developed. However, this only results in a partial improvement in air exchange, and reducing mechanical strength of the clothing. The mechanical strength of the clothing can be increased by attaching appropriate ventilation elements at the inner side of ventilation holes, which may permit proper air exchange as well as restrict direct access of insects to the body. The design of elements involving fluid flows usually is based on time-consuming Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. In this paper metamodeling approach different order polynomial local and global as well as kriging approximations are compared for shape optimization purposes of ventilation elements. The main goal is to identify the geometrical shape of the element that causes the least amount of flow energy losses along the cell flow channel, which can also be known from pressure difference. For this a multistep procedure was realized to achieve the best results. 1) Planning the position of control points of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) for obtaining elements with a smooth shape. 2) Building geometrical models using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software SolidWorks in conformity with the design of the experiment. 3) Calculation of responses for a complete model using Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software SolidWorks Flow Simulation. 4) Building metamodels for responses based on the computer experiment. 5) Using metamodels for shape optimization. 6) Validating the optimal design using CAE software for the complete model.

Abstract A new model for estimating the effects of high thermal radiation heat fluxes on occupants has been developed. This model allows the user to specify the type of clothing worn by typical occupants (e.g., street clothing or protective clothing), percentage of body covered by clothing, and occupant characteristics (e.g., age). Numerical models of heat transfer in fabrics and skin are used to estimate the times required to produce burn damage to bare and clothed skin. These skin burn estimates are used along with occupant characteristics to estimate the time-dependent probability of death from a fire. This paper reviews existing models for estimating the effects of high heat fluxes on occupants, describes the heat transfer models used to make skin burn estimates, and compares the results of the new model with those from existing models.

Streszczenie:
Industrial safety clothing is supposed to have capability to adjust its inside microclimate, to protect the human body from dangerous environments, and to improve productivity. So, it is important to select proper materials, forms, and wearing methods of work-clothes. Agricultural Safety Clothing (ASC) should protect the human body from environmental conditions such as cold, heat, and humidity as well as from working conditions. Agricultural Safety Clothing should also enhance the safety, comfort, and efficiency of works. However, they have increased the use of pesticide to harvest more crops, which has caused various side effects, and insects have become resistant to pesticides. For these issues, we aimed to develop the newly agricultural safety clothing based on highly technology finish textiles, and to estimate pesticide protective performance properties. And we were to evaluate the pesticide barrier property and safety performance properties of newly designed ASC being made with high-tech proof finish spun-laced nonwoven fabrics. The results of this study were as follows: 1). New high-tech proof finished ASC has respectively negligible or sometimes inconclusive amount of pesticide residue. Hence, newly designed ASC with high-tech proof finish fabrics was evaluated as the safety ASC better than the conventional safety clothing.

This paper introduces a functional clothing design for the elderly. Due to the aging of the elderly body organs and tissues, joint stability and mobility are declining, bone density and strength are also declining, physical activity is not as good as before. The purpose of this paper is to determine the needs and problems of the elderly on clothing and design functional clothing in line with their physiological functions and life needs. To determine the needs and problems of the elderly for clothing, we prepared a questionnaire, and the sample was from 101 elderly people across the country. Sample data show that the elderly have a great demand for the functionality of clothing, and have varying degrees of feedback on the color, fabric, size, structure, and other aspects of clothing. In combination with the questions reflected by the elderly in the questionnaire survey, we conducted market research on the existing clothing for the elderly. The results showed that the existing clothing for the elderly did not fully consider the physiological characteristics of the elderly to carry out the targeted design, and the clothing sold by the brand was relatively simple. In addition, the questionnaire sample data also showed that more than half of the elderly related to the section of pain, that the existing clothing wearing process is very difficult. Therefore, 10 elderly people with arthritis were selected from the questionnaire for in-depth interviews. Through the interview, we found that these elderly people, due to the lack of flexibility of joints, would consume a lot of time in the process of wearing clothes, especially pants. Therefore, clothing design for the elderly should be able to facilitate their life in the way of wearing, and reduce the difficulty of the elderly to put on and take off clothes.Based on the preliminary investigation, we came up with a design plan for the elderly. First of all, from the perspective of the model we adjust it according to the physiological characteristics of the elderly with arthritis. Due to the tubular design of pants, the elderly need to put the pants on the floor and wear them leg by leg, which is inconvenient in the process of putting them on and taking off. Therefore, we tried to change the original tubular sleeve pants into open pants, so that the elderly can wear them without lifting their legs. Since the open pants need to be designed with the function of closing, it takes more time for the button to be put on and taken off, and the zipper is not easy to wear, so we choose the mother-and-child buckle in the design. At the same time, according to the clinical symptoms and protection needs of arthritis, we focused on the knees and selected warmer and more protective materials for the knee. There are also some details on the pockets, belts and legs of trousers. Add protection to pocket openings to reduce the chance that items in your pocket will fall or be lost. In the waistband leg can be added to narrow the fixed details, to prevent the elderly from obstructing activities. Finally, the elderly living alone who had been followed up were interviewed to adjust the clothes and improve the design through their trying-on experience and wearing situation.

Streszczenie:
At high intermittent renewable energy share, plants are forced to operate more flexible beyond their original design intent. Many plants are older than 30 years with only limited residual lifetime. Decreasing energy prices and capacity factors will further enforce older plants to more transient operation with steeper gradients. Steam Turbine (ST) protections systems on site often are not designed for such flexible operation and therefore do not properly supervise the resulting impact on lifetime consumption. Therefore precise lifetime management concepts are required to increase plant reliability and flexibility, mitigate risks for new implemented operation modes like faster start-ups and extended turn down. The prerequisite for properly managing a plants lifetime is the accurate knowledge of the current state of consumed lifetime, which is evaluated in a lifetime assessment (LTA). This includes a standardized process for the calculation of creep and fatigue damage. For this long-term field operation data is used as input. The current LTA procedure typically limits the analysis to transient operation during start-up and shut-down. Other types of transient operation such as improved turn-down also need to be considered in order to take all relevant operation modes into account. Therefore dedicated, new advanced methods are required for the precise estimation of the lifetime impact due to new operation modes with higher requirements compared to an assessment based on known current procedure. These methods will allow optimizing asset lifetime. In order to maintain power plant competitiveness, operation and maintenance cost must be reduced despite the demand for improved turn-down and more frequent start-up procedures. This paper presents results of ST lifetime studies combining long-term operation data (including improved turn-down operation), FEM calculations and simplified and advanced constitutive material models. In a first investigation, the rotor is modelled with FEM and thermal boundary conditions during isolated transient operation are derived from measurement data combined with generically elaborated new turn-down profiles. The impact of the start-stop (enclosing cycle) and turndown cycle (sub-cycle) on the lifetime consumption is evaluated. For this, sub-cycles are considered in combination with the enclosing cycle and as isolated cycle. In a second investigation, the above described calculation model is fed with 2 years of continuous operation data. Postprocessing is performed with common rain-flow methods and compared to an accumulative start-stop cycle assessment. Based on the input of the calculation with the advanced constitutive material model further fracture mechanic investigations are performed. The paper closes with an outlook on opportunities arising from digitalization of power generation equipment.

Streszczenie:
The BARD project was a continuation of a previous BARD funded research project. It was aimed at characterization of the 12kDa immunodominant protein and subsequently the cloning and expression of the gene in E. coli. Additional immunodominant proteins were sought among genomic B. abortus expression library clones using T-lymphocyte proliferation assay as a screening method. The 12kDa protein was identified as the L7/L12 ribosomal protein demonstrating in the first time the role a structural protein may play in the development of the host's immunity against the organism. The gene was cloned from B. abortus (USA) and B. melitensis (Israel) showing identity of the oligonucleotide sequence between the two species. Further subcloning allowed expression of the protein in E. coli. While the native protein was shown to have DTH antigenicity its recombinant analog lacked this activity. In contrast the two proteins elicited lymphocyte proliferation in experimental murine brucellosis. CD4+ cells of the Th1 subset predominantly responded to this protein demonstrating the development of protective immunity (g-IFN, and IL-2) in the host. Similar results were obtained with bovine Brucella primed lymphocytes. UvrA, GroE1 and GroEs were additional Brucella immunodominant proteins that demonstrated MHC class II antigenicity. The role cytotoxic cells are playing in the clearance of brucella cells was shown using knock out mice defective either in their CD4+ or CD8+ cells. CD4+ defective mice were able to clear brucella as fast as did normal mice. In contrast mice which were defective in their CD8+ cells could not clear the organisms effectively proving the importance of this subtype cell line in development of protective immunity. The understanding of the host's immune response and the expansion of the panel of Brucella immunodominant proteins opened new avenues in vaccine design. It is now feasible to selectively use immunodominant proteins either as subunit vaccine to fortify immunity of older animals or as diagnostic reagents for the serological survaillance.
