Purpose Since the launch of the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) in 2003, Hong Kong cinema is believed to have confronted drastic changes. Hong Kong cinema is described to be dying, lacking creative space and losing local distinctiveness. A decade later, the rise of Hong Kong – China coproduction cinema under CEPA has been normalized and changed the once pessimism in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how Hong Kong cinema adjusted its production and creation in the first 10 years of CEPA. Design/methodology/approach Beginning with a review of the overall development, three paradigmatic cases are examined for reflecting upon what the major industrial and commercial concerns on the Hong Kong – China coproduction model are, and how such a coproduction model is not developed as smooth as what the Hong Kong filmmakers expected. Findings Collectively, this paper singles out the difficulties in operation and the limit of transnationality that occur in the Chinese context for the development of Hong Kong cinema under the Hong Kong – China coproduction model. Originality/value This is the author’s research in his five-year study of Hong Kong cinema and it contributes a lot to the field of cinema studies with relevant industrial and policy concern.

Legal services are an important type of trade in services, and opening up the legal services market requires careful consideration. The Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Mainland China and Hong Kong has taken the lead in setting the platform for opening up the legal services market. This regional free trade arrangement aims to provide preferential treatment to (and only to) the legal service industry and providers in the region. Because of the ever-developing economic relationship between the two parties, it is necessary to study the possibility of opening the market even further. This article examines the existing framework for liberalization of legal services under the CEPA framework and offers some suggestions on further liberalization of legal services between Mainland China and Hong Kong.

Thanks to its stunning entry into the ranks of world cinema in the 1970s, the history of the Hong Kong film industry up to 1997 is relatively well known. However, the coincidence of the Asian economic recession and the city's reintegration into the People's Republic of China (PRC) has worked to obscure recent developments. This article analyses contemporary Hong Kong cinema and its relations with the government of the mainland. We argue that the economic, cultural and geopolitical location of the city is contributing to developments that will allow the art cinema of the People's Republic of China to engage in international, Hollywood-dominated markets. Matters to do with production investment, censorship and film exhibition business are analysed in terms of the development of and revisions to the Closer Economic Partnership arrangement that now governs trade between the PRC and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

China has been attracting overseas real estate developers (OREDs) with its expanding real estate market since the adoption of the Open Door Policy. This attractiveness has been enhanced by China's accession to the World Trade Organization and the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement and is likely to remain for the foreseeable future. However, OREDs to conduct developments in China which adopts a socialist market-oriented approach is not without difficulties. The study has developed a SWOT dimensional analysis technique which is able to integrate the strengths and weaknesses of OREDs and also the opportunities and threats found in the market for formulating their (s)trategic plans and market positions. Apart from proposing a holistic model for OREDs’ strategic planning, the findings also suggested that OREDs in Guangzhou are in general strong in management and financial capacity but weak in understanding the market conditions. Building up a localized management team which understands the market and has good connection with local officials and business peoplė is of prime concerns. Toks jos patrauklumas išaugo Kinijai įstojus į PPO ir įgijus glaudesnės ekonominės partnerystės statusą (angl. Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement), be to, numatoma, kad artimiausiu metu jis niekur neišnyks. Tačiau užsienio nekilnojamojo turto plėtotojai, vykdantys plėtrą Kinijoje, kurioje taikomas socialistinis, į rinką orientuotas požiūris, susiduria su sunkumais. Tyrimo metu buvo sukurtas lyginamosios SSGG analizės metodas, leidžiantis integruoti užsienio nekilnojamojo turto plėtros specialistų stiprybes ir silpnybes bei aptiktas rinkoje galimybes ir grėsmes, kurios padės suformuluoti strateginius jų planus ir rinkos pozicijas. Be pasiūlyto holistinio modelio užsienio nekilnojamojo turto plėtotojų strateginiam planavimui, rezultatai rodo, kad užsienio nekilnojamojo turto plėtotojai Guangžou užima stiprią poziciją finansų ir valdymo srityje, tačiau silpnai orientuojasi rinkos sąlygomis. Būtina laikytis esminės koncepcijos – sukurti lokalią valdymo komandą, gerai besiorientuojančią rinkoje ir palaikančią gerus santykius su vietos valdžia ir verslininkais.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations can be distinguished from previous trade negotiations in terms of substance and process. The adoption of the mandate and the ongoing negotiations have taken place in the significantly reformed structure of the European Union (EU)’s Common Commercial Policy after the Lisbon Treaty’s entry into force. Efforts at closer economic integration between the world’s two biggest trading blocs has developed as the EU’s focus shifts from the multilateral trade system toward bilateralism and regionalism, and a new generation of trade agreements emerges. The envisaged TTIP expands the coverage of the agreement to an unprecedented array of commercial relations. Including new issues, such as regulatory cooperation and investment, have impacted the process of negotiations and enhanced its transparency with the involvement of various stakeholders. TTIP as an arrangement may shape the content of the Common Commercial Policy: much of what is achieved could potentially be introduced in other trade negotiations.

Hong Kong is well known for the area of free trade economy, the industries of trade in services, aviation industry is the most important representative of industries in Hong Kong. However, only the Cathay Pacific Airlines is registered and based on Hong Kong, supported by the government of HK, which was colonized of U.K, even though the establishment of Dragon Airline in HK in 1985, its business was constrained by government that shift the main market to Mainland China. The research purpose is setting to since Hong Kong has been signed the “ Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement “ with Mainland China in 2003, while Hong Kong was facing the economy downturn during SARS. China government loosened the restrictions in investing law of Aviation industry to foreign investors as only Hong Kong and Macau. The Hong Kong Airlines company, Cathay Pacific Airlines chose the strategy of strategic alliance cooperating with Chinese Airlines companies, the continuing influences to other Hong Kong, Chinese and Taiwanese Airlines whether they would like to adapt the same theory consisting strategic alliance each other.

This chapter focuses on the financial markets and related legal and institutional frameworks in mainland China, in the context of China’s liberalization commitments under the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA). Today, Hong Kong and its financial markets perform a number of roles in respect to China. As part of the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong increasingly must deal directly with resulting issues and questions, both as a result of the increasing use by mainland companies of Hong Kong’s financial markets (e.g. listing on the stock exchange) as well as supporting business in China. At the same time, the resulting interconnection between the two economies and financial systems brings challenges for Hong Kong. This is especially true of questions relating to mainland companies raising money in Hong Kong and resulting issues of disclosure, corporate governance, and related enforcement problems.

The rise of China, its soft power and hence changes in related government policies have resulted in Chinese main melody films acquiring new meanings. This chapter provides the theoretical backdrop against which the significance of Hong Kong filmmaker’s participation in these films is critically assessed. It outlines the transformation of main melody films from political propaganda to commercial blockbusters that attempt to win legitimacy based on quite similar values and styles of filmmaking to those used in the West. In the light of the rise of Mainland-Hong Kong co-productions after the signing of the Closer Economic Partnership Agreement in 2003, the northern ventures of Hong Kong directors are investigated in relation to the age of Chinese cinema.

This chapter examines Hong Kong-Mainland co-productions made under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA). CEPA facilitated the collaboration between Mainland Chinese investors and Hong Kong filmmakers to produce films that are supposed to cater to audiences in both regions. This triggered a renewed effort to individuate, subjectivise, and autonomise Hong Kong’s sociopolitical voice and position in these co-productions, which requires an active rewriting and re-understanding of extraterritoriality in the aftermath of the 1997 handover as a form of posthistoricity: (1) as a continual performance of a civic society that had already failed under global neoliberalism; (2) as an invocation of a new assembly of biopolitical lives that are eager to form a new civic society. This chapter first explicates the sociopolitical conditions and affects in Hong Kong after 1997. It then expounds how CEPA emerged out of a complex process of industrial transformation under neoliberalism between the 1990s and the early 2000s and how scholars evaluate the first ten years of Hong Kong-Mainland co-productions after CEPA. With such a background in mind, it scrutinises how Hong Kong filmmakers confront the crisis of authorship under CEPA in three registers––industrial, creative, and sociopolitical––with close attention to Johnnie To as a case study.
