Abstract The paper presents a study of the chaotic jerk circuit (CJC) employment capabilities for digital communications. The concept of coherent chaos shift keying (CSK) communication system with controlled error feedback chaotic synchronization is proposed for a specific CJC in two modifications. The stability of chaotic synchronization between the two CJCs was evaluated in terms of voltage drop at the input of the slave circuit and the impact of channel noise using simulations and experimental studies.

Abstract Context: Therapeutic use of GHRH to enhance GH secretion is limited by its short duration of action. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the pharmacokinetic profile, pharmacodynamic effects, and safety of CJC-1295, a long-acting GHRH analog. Design: The study design was two randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, ascending dose trials with durations of 28 and 49 d. Setting: The study was performed at two investigational sites. Participants: Healthy subjects, ages 21–61 yr, were studied. Interventions: CJC-1295 or placebo was administered sc in one of four ascending single doses in the first study and in two or three weekly or biweekly doses in the second study. Main Outcome Measures: The main outcome measures were peak concentrations and area under the curve of GH and IGF-I; standard pharmacokinetic parameters were used for CJC-1295. Results: After a single injection of CJC-1295, there were dose-dependent increases in mean plasma GH concentrations by 2- to 10-fold for 6 d or more and in mean plasma IGF-I concentrations by 1.5- to 3-fold for 9–11 d. The estimated half-life of CJC-1295 was 5.8–8.1 d. After multiple CJC-1295 doses, mean IGF-I levels remained above baseline for up to 28 d. No serious adverse reactions were reported. Conclusions: Subcutaneous administration of CJC-1295 resulted in sustained, dose-dependent increases in GH and IGF-I levels in healthy adults and was safe and relatively well tolerated, particularly at doses of 30 or 60 μg/kg. There was evidence of a cumulative effect after multiple doses. These data support the potential utility of CJC-1295 as a therapeutic agent.

A low HDL-cholesterol concentration is an independent risk factor for CVD. Studies have suggested that flavonoid consumption may be cardioprotective, and a favourable impact on circulating HDL-cholesterol concentrations has been suggested to partially explain this association. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of consuming increasing daily doses of low-calorie cranberry juice cocktail (CJC) on the plasma lipid profile of abdominally obese men. For that purpose, thirty men (mean age 51 (SD 10) years) consumed increasing doses of CJC during three successive periods of 4 weeks (125ml/d, 250ml/d, 500ml/d). Before the study and after each phase, we measured changes in physical and metabolic variables. We noted a significant increase in plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration after the consumption of 250ml CJC/d (+8·6±14·0% v. 0ml CJC/d; P<0·01), an effect that plateaued during the last phase of the study (500ml CJC/d: +8·1±10·0% v. 0ml CJC/d; P<0·0001). Multivariate analyses revealed that changes in plasma apo A-I (IR2=48%, P<0·0001) and triacylglycerol (R2=16%, P<0·005) concentrations were the only variables significantly contributing to the variation in plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration noted in response to the intervention. No variation was observed in total as well as in LDL and VLDL cholesterol. The present results show that daily CJC consumption is associated with an increase in plasma HDL-cholesterol concentrations in abdominally obese men. We hypothesise that polyphenolic compounds from cranberries may be responsible for this effect, supporting the notion that the consumption of flavonoid-rich foods can be cardioprotective.

Although the majority of children with isolated growth hormone (GH) deficiency have a good growth response to GH-releasing hormone (GHRH), the use of this therapeutic agent is limited by its very short half-life. Indeed, we have shown that, in mice with GHRH gene ablation (GHRH knockout; GHRHKO), even twice-daily injections of a GHRH analog are unable to normalize growth. CJC-1295 is a synthetic GHRH analog that selectively and covalently binds to endogenous albumin after injection, thereby extending its half-life and duration of action. We report the effects of CJC-1295 administration in GHRHKO animals. Three groups of 1-wk-old GHRHKO mice were treated for 5 wk with 2 μg of CJC-1295 at intervals of 24, 48, and 72 h. Placebo-treated GHRHKO mice and mice heterozygous for the GHRHKO allele served as controls. GHRHKO animals receiving daily doses of CJC-1295 exhibited normal body weight and length. Mice treated every 48 and 72 h reached higher body weight and length than placebo-treated animals, without full growth normalization. Femur and tibia length remained normal in animals treated every 24 and 48 h. Relative lean mass and subcutaneous fat mass were normal in all treated groups. CJC-1295 caused an increase in total pituitary RNA and GH mRNA, suggesting that proliferation of somatotroph cells had occurred, as confirmed by immunohistochemistry images. These findings demonstrate that treatment with once-daily administration of CJC-1295 is able to maintain normal body composition and growth in GHRHKO mice. The same dose is less effective when administered every 48 or 72 h.

Abstract In vivo bioconjugation to the free thiol on Cys34 of serum albumin by a strategically placed reactive group on a bioactive peptide is a useful tool to extend plasma half-life. Three maleimido derivates of human GH-releasing factor (hGRF)1–29 were synthesized and bioconjugated to human serum albumin ex vivo. All three human serum albumin conjugates showed enhanced in vitro stability against dipeptidylpeptidase-IV and were bioactive in a GH secretion assay in cultured rat anterior pituitary cells. When the maleimido derivatives were individually administered sc to normal male Sprague Dawley rats, an acute secretion of GH was measured in plasma. The best compound, CJC-1295, showed a 4-fold increase in GH area under the curve over a 2-h period compared with hGRF1–29. CJC-1295, a tetrasubstituted form of hGRF1–29 with an added Nε-3-maleimidopropionamide derivative of lysine at the C terminus, was selected for further pharmacokinetic evaluation, where it was found to be present in plasma beyond 72 h. A Western blot analysis of the plasma of a rat injected with CJC-1295 showed the presence of a CJC-1295 immunoreactive species on the band corresponding to serum albumin, appearing after 15 min and remaining in circulation beyond 24 h. These results led to the identification of CJC-1295 as a stable and active hGRF1–29 analog with an extended plasma half-life.

This study aimed to determine the effect of the addition of chokeberry juice concentrate (CJC) and foaming agent (egg albumin) with different percentages on the selected physical properties of agar gel. The agar gels with the addition of 5, 10, and 20% concentrations of chokeberry juice concentrate and with fructose addition were prepared. In addition, the foamed gels with different concentrations of egg albumin (in the range 0.5–2.0%) and CJC were produced. The water content, colour, density, hold-up and some mechanical and TPA (Texture Profile Analysis) descriptors as well some structural and acoustic emission parameters of non-aerated and foamed gels were analysed. The addition of CJC changed the colour of agar gel with fructose, the attractive appearance of the aerated gel was also linked with the addition of concentrate. The addition of 20% of CJC and foaming agent created samples with very low hardness, cohesiveness, and gumminess, and the structure of the aerated samples was characterised by the larger bubble diameter and the wider distribution of their size. The more promising texture and structure properties were obtained for samples with aerated gels with 5 and 10% addition of chokeberry juice concentrate.

Abstract Context: Pulsatile GH secretion is considered important for many of the hormone’s physiological effects. Short-term GHRH infusions enhance GH pulsatility and increase IGF-I, but the short GHRH half-life limits its therapeutic use. A synthetic GHRH analog (CJC-1295) that binds permanently to endogenous albumin after injection (half-life = 8 d) stimulates GH and IGF-I secretion in several animal species and in normal human subjects and enhances growth in rats. Objective: Our objective was to assess GH pulsatility after a single injection of CJC-1295 and determine which GH secretion parameters correlated to the increase in IGF-I production. Methods: GH pulsatility was assessed by 20-min blood sampling during an overnight 12-h period in healthy 20- to 40-yr-old men before and 1 wk after injection of either 60 or 90 μg/kg CJC-1295. Results: GH secretion was increased after CJC-1295 administration with preserved pulsatility. The frequency and magnitude of GH secretory pulses were unaltered. However, basal (trough) GH levels were markedly increased (7.5-fold; P < 0.0001) and contributed to an overall increase in GH secretion (mean GH levels, 46%; P < 0.01) and IGF-I levels (45%; P < 0.001). No significant differences were observed between the responses to the two drug doses. The IGF-I increases did not correlate with any parameters of GH secretion. Conclusions: CJC-1295 increased trough and mean GH secretion and IGF-I production with preserved GH pulsatility. The marked enhancement of trough GH levels by continuous GHRH stimulation implicates the importance of this effect on increasing IGF-I. Long-acting GHRH preparations may have clinical utility in patients with intact pituitary GH secretory capability.

Esse artigo relata um caso de Celulite Juvenil Canina (CJC) em um filhote da raça Dachshund na cidade de Teresina – PI, com tratamento responsivo, descrevendo sinais clínicos, abordagem clínica, terapia instituída e resposta do animal ao tratamento. Este apresentava histórico de otite crônica bilateral, com estenose em conduto esquerdo, secreção purulenta e crostas em todo o pavilhão auricular, dor, além de apatia, falta de apetite, vocalização e linfonodos submandibulares aumentados, sendo tratado para otite e, passados quatro dias, manifestou alopecia, despigmentação de lábios, focinho e região periocular, além de edema, crostas e pústulas nessa região, sugerindo CJC. Após diagnóstico clínico associado aos exames complementares, iniciou-se o tratamento imunossupressor e antibiótico, onde o animal apresentou remissão dos sintomas em 40 dias. O trabalho evidencia a ocorrência de CJC em filhote, bem como a importância do diagnóstico dessa doença para o devido tratamento e obtenção de cura do paciente.

This article challenges the assumption that the Canadian Jewish community embraced the discourse and potential of multiculturalism rapidly and enthusiastically. It has been proven that certain groups—most notably the Ukrainians—used the hearings of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism, which promised to consider the ‘‘contributions of the other ethnic’’ groups, to promote the idea that Canada is multicultural. But the largest organization of Canadian Jewry—the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC)—was very cautious in its dealings with the Commission. It only participated in the Preliminary Hearings, in order to protest the preamble’s language that referred to the ‘‘two founding races. From the records of meetings, it is evident that CJC, based in Montreal—which was the home of the largest Jewish community in Canada at the time—was worried that introducing ‘‘multiculturalism’’ would offend the French. This article also asserts that CJC was not willing to define the Jews as an ethnic group, which was the implied category for groups in the new discourse of multiculturalism. CJC thought that a self-definition of the Jews as an ethnic group would weaken the place of Jews in Canadian society, both because of how Jews defined themselves on the census of 1961 and because they believed that they had a higher profile in the division of society into Protestant—Catholic—Jew than in a society divided into ethnic groups.

To determine the role of dairy products and produce in the occurence of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli (CJC) enteritis, we analyzed dietary histories obtained from 218 persons with Campylobacter enteritis who were diagnosed by culture betwen April, 1982, and September, 1983. For comparison, similar histories were obtained from 526 persons without CJC enteritis. Both ill and well subjects were enrollees of the Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound (GHC). Raw milk (relative risk (RR) = 4.6) and mushrooms (RR = 1.5) were the only non-meat foods consumed significantly more often by cases than by controls. Cases infected with strains carrying plasmid-mediated tetracyline resistance (R factors) were somewhat more likely (RR = 8.5) than those infected with other strains (RR = 2.5) to have acquired their infections from raw milk (P = 0.03). In this population, approximately 10% of the tetracycline-resistant CJC infections were attributable to raw milk consumption as compared to only 2% of the infections with tetracycline-sensitive strains.

The objective of this work was to assess the effect of different coffee organic cultivation systems on chemical and biological soil characteristics, in different seasons of the year. The following systems were evaluated: coffee intercropped with one (CJ1), two (CJ2) or three (CJ3) pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) alleys; coffee planted under full sun (CS); area planted with sweet pepper and snap bean in a conventional tillage system (AC); and secondary forest area (FFR). Row spacing in CJ1, CJ2, CJ3 and CS was 2.0x1.0, 2.8x1.0, 3.6x1.0, and 2.8x1.0 m, respectively. Soil samples were collected at 10-cm depth, during the four seasons of the year. The results were subjected to analysis of variance, principal component analysis, and redundancy analysis. There was an increase in edaphic macrofauna, soil basal respiration, and microbial quotient in the summer. Total macrofauna density was greater in CJ2 followed by CJ3, CS, CJ1, AC and FFR; Coleoptera, Formicidae, and Isoptera were the most abundant groups. There are no significant differences among the areas for soil basal respiration, and the metabolic quotient is higher in CJ1, CJ3, and FFR. Microbial biomass carbon and the contents of K, pH, Ca+Mg, and P show greater values in AC.

L’errore sulla qualità della persona, sancito nel can. 1083 § 2, n. 1 del cjc del 1917, che in sostanza si cofondeva con lo stesso errore di persona, ha trovato nella giurisprudenza rotale dopo il Concilio Vaticano II una interpretazione più consona allo spirito dello stesso Concilio, che insiste sul concetto integrale della persona umana e non solo sul aspetto fisico. Attraverso quella interpretazione, legata alla terza regola di S. Alfonso, si è compiuto il passaggio alla nuova normativa del can. 1097 § 2 del ccc del 1983. L’analisi della giurisprudenza rotale riguardo al suddetto canone riguarda l’errore come il fenomeno giuridico, l’oggetto dell’errore (la qualità intesa direttamente e principalmente), la dimonstrazione dell’errore.

On 24 September 1997 the Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) released a comprehensive report entitled Integrity in the Queensland Police Service: Implementation and Impact of the Fitzgerald Inquiry Reforms, in line with its statutory obligation to report to Parliament on the implementation of the recommendations of the Inquiry. Earlier reports have examined the implementation of the Inquiry's recommendations relating to recruitment and training and the restructuring of the police service (see CJC 1993, 1994). This most recent report addresses issues such as whether the Fitzgerald reforms have enhanced the effectiveness of the complaints investigation process, led to improved standards of behaviour within the Queensland Police Service (QPS), reduced the incidence of corruption and weakened the influence of the police ‘code of silence’. In addition to providing a retrospective assessment of the ‘Fitzgerald reforms’, the report identifies key areas where further action is required by the QPS and provides a reference point against which to measure future progress. This article summarises the key findings of the report and briefly discusses the implications for further reform of the QPS and the role of the CJC in that process.

Tra i problemi di interpretazione e di applicazione riguardanti il can. 1095, n. 3 del CJC un posto importante riveste la domanda della rilevanza giuridica dei requisito della perpetuità dell’incapacità di assumere le obbligazioni essenziali del matrimonio. Si tratta della questione, se questa incapacità debba essere perpetua, ovvero sia sufficiente che essa sussista al momento delle nozze, indipendentemente dalla possibilità di un suo superamento in un tempo successivo. Dopo aver presentato il suddetto problema nella giurisprudenza rotale l’autore ritiene que sarà sufficiente l'esistenza dell’incapacità al momento del consenso, indipendentemente dal fatto che essa sia perpetua о temporanea. Inoltre si pone il problema della relazione tra l’incapacitas assumendi e impotenza non perpetua. A partire dal fatto che il can. 1095, n. 3 non richiede esplicitamente sotto il profilo dell’incapacità di assumere quelle fattispecie di impotanza non perpetua, che non possono essere considerate causa di nullità dal can. 1084 CJC. Dopo aver valutato gli argomenti delle due correnti dei vari tribunali inferiori, l’autore risponde a questo problema negativamente. Tanto di più che la giurisprudenza rotale si pronunzia contro l’applicazione del can. 1095, n. 3 CJC ai casi di impotenza non perpetua.

La politique migratoire canadienne des années 1930 et 1940 est la plus restrictive et sélective de l’histoire du pays, notamment en raison de son hostilité envers les populations migrantes juives. La question de l’antisémitisme au Canada et au Québec ne peut donc se poser sans revenir sur la position d’Ottawa en matière migratoire. Dans cet article, nous souhaitons examiner non pas les manifestations de cette hostilité, mais la manière dont celle-ci fut perçue et combattue par le Congrès juif canadien (CJC), alors principale organisation de la communauté, entre 1945 et 1948. The American Jewish community has historically overshadowed Canadian Jewry. In population size, political prestige, and global influence, the power imbalance between American- and Canadian-Jewish organizations throughout the twentieth century has anchored popular understandings of North American Jewish affairs as one dominated by the U.S. Whereas the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) shepherded international Jewish causes throughout this period, its Canadian analogue, the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC), never achieved such stature. However, on an island ninety miles from the U.S. coast, the fragile geopolitics of the Cold War conspired to recast this relationship. The Castro Revolution initiated a process which culminated in the severing of U.S.-Cuban ties in 1961, leaving a precarious Cuban Jewish community vulnerable. Canada’s geographic proximity and close institutional ties with American Jewry transformed the CJC’s role as the primary caregivers of Cuban Jewry. Consequently, the sundering of American-Cuban relations elevated the CJC to a position of strategic prominence on the international stage ultimately overshadowing its larger, and more illustrious, cousin to the south in Cuba. Introduction: CJC-1008 is a chemical modification of the opioid peptide dynorphin A (1-13) (Dyn A) that promotes dynorphin’s covalent attachment to human serum albumin in vivo after administration, thus prolonging its duration of action. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the preliminary efficacy and safety of CJC-1008 as compared with placebo in patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).Methods: Patients with PHN were assigned 1:1 to receive active study medication or placebo. After dosing, measurements were made every 15 minutes for the first hour; at two, three, four, six, and eight hours postdose; and during return visits to the study site after two, seven, and 28 days (as necessary), as well as during precrossover and exit visits. These measurements examined: 1) overall pain intensity, 2) pain intensity for each individual PHN type, 3) categorical overall pain intensity, 4) categorical pain relief, and 5) adverse events (AEs). When PHN pain intensity returned to baseline and/or at patients’ first request for rescue analgesia other than acetaminophen (typically around 28 days after dosing but sometimes as soon as two days postdose), patients were to cross over to the alternative treatment and be monitored on the same schedule.Results: A substantial placebo response was observed, but the analgesic effect observed in the active group was greater than that in the placebo group for the first eight hours. By 24 hours, the difference was not significant. A total of 29 out of 30 patients (96 percent) experienced at least one treatment-emergent AE during active drug treatment, while 14 of 27 patients (52 percent) reported such AEs during placebo treatment. Of the AEs occurring within the first eight hours after dosing, 97 percent were reported during treatment with active drug and 3 percent were reported during treatment with placebo. The majority of these AEs were mild in intensity.Discussion: This study provides evidence of a greater analgesic effect when using CJC-1008 compared to placebo in patients with PHN. However, the effect only lasted through eight hours postdose and diminished by 24 hours. This study provides evidence of a peripheral action of dynorphin, since CJC-1008 does not cross the blood-brain barrier.
