Streszczenie:
Even as the Church of England lost ground to political dissent and New England gradually disestablished its state churches early in the nineteenth century, writers on both sides of the debates about church establishments maintained their belief in religion’s role as a moral guide for individuals and the state. “Protestant Institutionalism” argues that writers—from Herman Melville and Harriet Beecher Stowe to George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell—imagined through literature the institutions that would produce a religiously sound society as established churches began to lose their authority. Drawing on novels and poems as well as sermons and tracts about how religion might exist apart from the state, I argue that these authors both understood society in terms of institutions and also used their literature to imagine the institutions—such as family, denomination, and nation—that would provide society with a stable foundation. This institutional thinking about society escapes any literary history that accepts Protestant individualism as a given. In fact, although the US and England maintained different relationships between church and state, British authors often looked to US authors for help imagining the society that new forms of religion might produce precisely in terms of these institutions. In the context of disestablishment we can see how the literature of the nineteenth century—and nineteenth-century novels in particular—was about more than the fate of the individual in society. In fact, to different degrees for each author, individual development actually relies on the proper understanding of the individual’s relationship to institutions and the role those institutions play in supporting society

Streszczenie:
The progress of the Roman Catholic Church in Wales under a succession of able bishops between 1916 and 1962 was striking. The Church grew in strength, stature, and confidence. The expansion in the number of its adherents was largely due to continuing immigration from Ireland, England and the Continent. Although conversions from among the native population certainly occurred, they helped the Catholic cause only minimally. Furthermore, like the other Welsh denominations, the Church found itself in a constant struggle to retain its existing faithful. The growth of the Church in the Principality was one of the primary reasons why hostility and prejudice against Catholicism continued unabated down to the early 1960s. At a local level, the initial opposition to the re-emer gence of Catholicism was undramatic and soon subsided. In the wider sphere, however, animosity remained virulent. In denominational newspapers and conferences, ministers, clergymen and prominent laymen revealed deep anti-Catholic dispositions. Many reacted directly to the growth of the Church by warning fellow Welshmen of the insidious intentions of Rome and its Fascio-political threat. Others vehemently attacked Catholic belief and practice. The Catholic Church's unceasin g attempts to establish its own educational system in Wales became an ideal channel into which these prejudices were directed. While hostility remained fervent throughout the period, underlying_ it was the clear, yet gradual, acceptance of the Roman Catholic Church by the people of Wales. By 1962 the Church had achieved an accepted, and indeed revered, position among the Welsh denominations. The effect of increasing general tolerance, the wide-scale adoption of ecumenical ideals, and respect both for individual Catholics and for their promotion of social, moral and cultural issues, all helped transform the attitude of Welsh society towards the Church.

Streszczenie:
The progressive secularization of Europe has become an undeniable social fact in recent decades. The separation of state and church, religion and politics, is now widely regarded as the fundamental achievement of modern times. At the same time, however, Europe follows a tradition of Christianity that is over 1,500 years old. At the meeting of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (February 9-15, 2022), it was emphasized, among other things: "European churches are struggling with the influence of a secularized society on their lives and witness." Individual churches cannot solve complex problems, but together there would be more opportunities than challenges. In Montenegro, about half of the population (with higher education) sees a promising future for their country in ecumenical and cosmopolitan thinking and action. Another part of the population of Montenegro still sees nationalist structures and their political representatives as salvation and maximum independence for their country. However, in a populist way, the fact that, especially small countries, need external partnerships is ignored. It seems that the politicians in question are more concerned about their position, about which Caesar said in ancient times: "It is better to be first in a Gallic village than second in Rome". To explain ecumenism in more detail, let's use an analogy - imagine that all Christian churches are housed in one multi-story building. Each church occupies one floor. What good is it for a church on the 20th floor, for example, to only reinforce the walls and floors in its premises for stabilization, if the foundation of the entire house, including the supporting pillars (which connect several floors in the lower and upper parts) would be unstable. Many church decision-makers today see ecumenism as an opportunity for preservation, salvation and future-oriented influence on the "house" of Christian cultural heritage. It should be noted that, although an increasing part of the European population stopped participating in traditional religious practice (at least, regularly), the level of private religious beliefs remained relatively high.

Streszczenie:
Background: One of the main characteristics of the Ukrainian religious field is conflict between two large Orthodox Churches – Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). These Churches embrace most part of orthodox population and it makes their conflict potentially dangerous for society. The Russian invasion February 24, 2022 makes many problems for UOC because it is considered to be part of state-depending Russian Orthodox Church. As a result, many believers turned their backs on this church, and the state changed its politics toward it rather harshly. But the extent of the changes in belonging to this church remains uncertain and requires assessment. Purpose: To assess the changes in mass self-identification with Ukrainian Orthodox Church in condition of Russia-Ukraine war. Methods: The analysis of statistical data of the moving of religious community in Ukrainian religious field and analysis of data of confessional identification in national representative public opinion polls. Results: Data of public opinion polls show that on the level of identification with the UOC a significant impact was made by large-scale Russian invasion on February 24, 2022 only. Only in the polls in 2022 there was a significant decrease in the corresponding figure. However, the level of such identification has remained stable even in the situations of the Russian aggression of 2014-2021. Conclusion: Data of public opinion polls show that the large-scale Russian invasion of 2022 has significantly influenced the adherence to and the orientation of the UOC. But at the same time, assessments of such changes, which are making on the confessional identification in these surveys, may be somewhat overstated, and they should be treated with great caution, especially if you base on them a politics in such dangerous area as religion. The UOC has been facing powerful challenges for many years. These challenges have dramatically increased since February 24, 2022, but even now this Church has shown considerable sustainability and the issue of halting of its functioning remains quite conflict-prone, while the benefits from its closing seem rather doubtful. Today, digitalisation is widely discussed in the context of various institutions whoseoperational guidelines have made it a daily routine and a necessity for making informationaccessible to the public. The digitisation of museum collections is of particularimportance, both in terms of making them accessible to the public and for art historyresearch. However, many art objects are not only in museums, but also in churches, where, unlike the above-mentioned institutions, digitisation is not a priority and anecessity for them to continue to fulfil their tasks for the public. Considering that most ofthe sculptures created in Latvia before the middle of the 19th century are located inchurches, the paper focuses on the issues related to sacred interiors, digitisationpossibilities and their necessity. The paper analyses a number of problems and proposessolutions to the questions of what digitisation should be in order to give the maximumvalue, rather than digitisation for digitisation's. What are the benefits of a high quality,research-based digitisation of sacred interiors in the Latvian and European context. Theauthor highlights the necessity and importance of creating a digital database of sacredinteriors and masters, ensuring the circulation and accessibility of information not onlyfor art history research, but for society as a whole. The availability of information willcreate the possibility not only to see but to understand what you see and to appreciateuniqueness.

The family is a community of love, the greatest treasure of our people. A person becomes a person only in the family. Modern society is interested in a strong, spiritually and morally healthy family. This is due to the fact that the family plays an important role in strengthening the health and upbringing of the younger generations, ensuring the economic and social development of society, improving the demographic processes of our state. It is in the family that the foundations of a person's character, his attitude to relatives, work, moral, social and cultural values are formed. The family is the first Church. The Church views the family as a supernatural and primary institution of society based on the voluntarily entered into God-blessed union of man and woman. This paper discusses the religious dimension of the public debate concerning the public health measures adopted by the Romanian authorities during the pandemic and focuses on the role played by the Romanian Orthodox Church within this context. It delineates the different camps that were formed within the Church in this regard and traces their evolution throughout the pandemic. It contextualizes the position of the Church in order to better understand it, placing it within the broader context of the Romanian society during the pandemic and integrating it within the longer history of post-communist relations between the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian state and the Romanian civil society. It analyses the political impact of the public health measures and the role of the Church in shaping this impact. Finally, starting from the Romanian experience of the pandemic and from the ideological, theological and political disputes that it has generated within the Romanian public sphere, it develops some general conclusions regarding the relation between faith, science and politics whose relevance, if proven valid, surpasses the Romanian context and thus contributes to a more ecumenical discussion regarding the theological, pastoral and political lessons that can be learned from an otherwise tragic experience.

This paper examines whose voices narrate official Coptic heritage, what the in-built biases in representations of Coptic heritage are and why, and some of the implications of omissions in narratives of Coptic heritage. It argues that the primary narrator of official Coptic heritage during the twentieth century was the leadership of the Coptic Orthodox Church. The Coptic Orthodox Church is the body that holds authority over the sources of heritage, such as church buildings and manuscripts, and also has the resources with which to preserve and disseminate heritage. The Church hierarchy’s leadership was not entirely uncontested, however, a middle ground was continually negotiated to enable lay Copts to play various roles and contribute to the articulation of Coptic heritage. Ultimately, though, alternative voices must operate within the limits set by the Church leadership and also negotiate the layers of exclusion set by society and state.

Migrants on the margins was a five-year collaborative field research project that investigated the movement of migrants into and around four of the world’s most pressured cities: Colombo in Sri Lanka, Dhaka in Bangladesh, Harare in Zimbabwe and Hargeisa in Somaliland. Supported by the Society, the research team adopted a comparative approach to look at the opportunities available to migrants in order to better understand their experiences and vulnerabilities. Research in the four cities engaged with both newly arrived and well-established residents of 13 neighbourhoods, and involved focus groups, surveys, walk along interviews, oral histories, Q methodology, and GIS and participatory community mapping workshops. The key findings from the project have shed light on the incredible challenges of living in the neighbourhoods studied as well as the significant levels of population mobility, or churn, within these communities. The research also highlights the impact of clear gender differences in men’s and women’s roles in communities, as well as the effect of evictions and tenure security on residents, and how people can easily become ‘trapped’ within these neighbourhoods. Results from the research are continuing to influence policy within the four cities, and the research team have worked to support local policy makers and municipalities to improve the situations that migrants find themselves in.
