Streszczenie:
Abstract: A rich array of original Christmas folklore, mythology, and stories exists in Yiddish. In this paper, I present a framework for understanding the Yiddish literary response to Christmas in the context of a dark midwinter folklore that has evolved across cultures since antiquity. Among Christians, this midwinter folklore gave rise to the fundamental Christmas literary motif of the balance of cold and darkness with warmth and light, with the latter two often signifying comfort and goodwill. I argue that the fundamental Christmas literary motif employed in Yiddish is consistent with that of Christians, but key elements are distorted to reflect a distinctly Jewish perspective: Yiddish folklore inverts the figure of Jesus from being the Christian emblem of light into an emblem of midwinter darkness, and modern Yiddish literature adapts the motif of balancing darkness with light as a metaphor for balancing Old World and New World values. Whereas light characteristically prevails in the traditional Christmas story, the Yiddish Christmas story corrupts this optimism to express Jewish sentiments about Christianity and the non-Jewish world.

In Africa and among the Yoruba Christians in particular, the orientation that there are divergences in their religious beliefs sometimes results in religious intolerance culminating in religious conflict. Therefore, this study investigated the beliefs of the Babakérésì (Father Christmas) and Egúngún (Masquerade). Egúngún is a religious event whereby, the spirit of the dead and ancestors interact with the living and Father Christmas is an annual Christian Festival. However, Father Christmas, as a socio-religious event has not been related to any form of Yoruba Egúngún. This gap is filled by this study. This study employs a cultural approach, which implies the social power that encodes culture in a society, using the comparative method. Cultural and religious elements of Egúngún- the divinity of the ancestors are compared with Nicholas and/or Santa Claus and Father Christmas to establish their relationship. It is found that religious elements of Egúngún are related to Father Christmas and Nicholas and/or Santa Claus in symbolisms- the spirits of the dead, ancestors, or saints manifest in humans to bless the children. It is equally found out that, Egúngún, Nicholas and/or Santa Claus and Father Christmas are imitated, especially in voice by the traditional and Christians during Christmas and Egúngún festivals, apart from the fact that both festivals are celebrated annually. This study concludes that there are convergences of beliefs on Father Christmas and Egúngún mediated by the spirit of the dead- ancestor inhibits in human-being. The two religions teach the same values in different modes and, therefore, the worshippers should tolerate one another by peaceful co-existence.

There are in the tense of Christian-Muslim relations in Indonesia since the time of the New Order until today. The issues in Christian-Muslim relations include conversion (of faith) with marriage and celebrating Christmas. These two issues are constantly associated with religious politics in Indonesia. The issues have kept tensions to reoccur, although according to Indonesian history, Christianity and Islam had jointly driven colonialists away and participated in founding the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. In addition to theological affairs, the two issues relating to the tension of Christian-Muslim relationship have also impacted political and economic affairs. This article provides description of tension between Muslims and Christians in Indonesia in the case of conversion from Islam to Christian with marriage and celebrating Christmas in Muslim communities. The work concludes that in order to reduce tension between Christian and Muslim, all efforts to conduct theologia religionum dialogs should be sought, and social justice between Christians and Muslims should be created in the country. All of this is none other than a model of religious practices that have surpassed symbols. This is called passing over religious practices with new religious experiences.

"The article analyzes folk winter holidays celebrated in December before Christmas as the greatest holiday of all Christians. There is a combination of folk (pre-Christian) traditions with Christian traditions, which co-exist to this day. The holidays analyzed in the research are dedicated to the most common names of saints in Western Podillya (as well as in Ukraine as a whole), which are most often given to the local residents. Dmytro’s/St. Demetrios Day celebration, in addition to its Christian custom, characterized by church services in memory of martyrs and honoring birthday people, is also known by the traditions related to celebrating the land in winter period, protecting cattle, as well as the cult of deceased ancestors. Celebrations of Dmytro’s/St. Demetrios holiday are proceeded by the celebration of Michael’s Day, which symbolizes the arrival of winter. In Western Podillya St. Michael is known as a protector against evil forces. He is also perceived by the locals as the patron saint of wild forest animals and hunters. Until the middle of the 20th century St. Catherine’s Day celebration in Western Podillya followed the rituals reflecting pre-Christian beliefs. Among them are rites of “destiny calling”, fortune telling and divination (considering the destiny of a future marriage couple), as well as honoring the cult of ancestors. During Varvara/St. Barbara celebration the most evident are magical actions associated with fire and water as the main elements in the world creation and symbols of the Nativity of Jesus Christ in the Christian tradition. Such lunar symbols as dumplings and pies are important for the understanding of celebration rituals. Most ritual actions convey love courtships related to the choice of a future marriage partner. St. Anna’s holiday completes the cycle of holidays related to Christmas celebrations. It marks the beginning of Christmas preparations: women clean houses, men arrange farm buildings and property, provide food for festive meals, girls organize groups for singing carols and other traditional customs of Christmas holidays celebration. Keywords: Western Podillya, Christian religion, ceremonial action, divination, folk holiday. "

Christians believe that Christmas is a season to glorify the birth of Jesus Christ. However, the Christmas celebration is an issue intertwined with business realities. Researchers argue that the influence of the Bible intersects with Christmas. Nevertheless, some people use Christmas as a field to implement businesses that seek huge profits for personal satisfaction, thus creating social problems on the other side. This research aimed to analyze the Bible’s influence at Christmas and its implications for business realities in Indonesia. This research used a qualitative research method based on a literature review from a sociology of religion perspective. Researchers used scientific articles, proceedings, and books related to the research variables. This research showed that the Bible does influence Christmas. However, the Christmas atmosphere has implications for business realities that give rise to the spirit of capitalism. In this case, the social problems that occur are pressure and suffering. In essence, Christians reconstruct and rethink the nature and meaning of Jesus Christ’s birth in the Bible. Researchers provide scientific solutions, namely the actualization of celebrating Christmas humanistically in Indonesia.

The people who are likely to display trees are Christian, practice other secular Christmas rituals, have children, and spend Christmas at home. This well-established rule has sufficient strength to become an argument for a fatwa for the permissibility of Muslims wishing Christians a Merry Christmas. This qualitative research takes data from literatures. The first step in content analysis in this research is mapping the arguments including fiqh principles what are involved in reasoning the fatwas about saying 'Merry Christmas' as a Christian holiday. This article explores how Christian heritage is engaged with, strengthened, and contested in and through Swedish newspapers and in the annual Swedish Christmas calendar. Although Sweden is perceived as highly secular and characterized by an increased distance between the former state church and the Swedish population, ideas about Swedish cultural heritage are still tied to notions of a Christian past. Previous research has highlighted Christmas as particularly salient for Swedes’ understanding of their cultural heritage and national identity, which includes perceptions of Christmas as ‘merely’ a tradition. Using theories of nostalgia and banal religion, this article addresses how Swedishness is constructed in the Christmas calendar, as well as through its framing in Swedish newspapers. While the narrative of the Calendar does not normally include overt references to Christian parables, it frequently uses Christian and folkloric symbolism to effect a backdrop of nostalgia. I argue that the Calendar and its framing in newspapers play on conceptions of Swedishness that are inextricably linked to ideas of ‘secularized’ Christianity, and by extension to constructions of what counts as national belonging in contemporary Sweden.

The period of Christmas peace, established by the Hälsinge law, was a firmly established custom in the Nordic countries going back to the official Christmas celebrations laid down by the Catholic church at Tours in 867. Christmas Eve was respected as a day of fasting and "no meat was eaten", beliefs about Christmas folk were common in western Scandinavia and Celtic areas, –the Catholic celebrations of the twelve days of Christmas—the period of Christmas peace—was linked with these beliefs and the sacrificial rite took place relatively close to the tent with a sacrificial dish shaped like a boat complete with sail and oars being hung up in a tree, probably a tall tree so that the Christmas folk could reach it on their wanderings through the air. This last that-clause does not seem to have any Catholic connections but rather pre-Christian ones. An analysis of these different phenomena can perhaps provide us with examples of parallel phenomena in Saami materials.

This study was intended to comprehend how faith-based community groups communicated about cultural artifacts such as diverse Christmas celebration speeches. this study employed a phenomenological approach in order to understand the importance of identity expressions from the cultural artifacts associated with the Christmas season. This study found that faith-based community organizations interpret the issues of Christmas speeches or greetings differently. Muhammadiyah "frees" its adherents to wish Christians a Merry Christmas or not. Additionally, since Christmas characteristics were seen as examples of cultural inventiveness, it did not raise any objections to them. Congratulating the religious holidays of other religions, such as "Merry Christmas," are officially not prohibited by Nahdlatul Ulama. Similar circumstances apply to the Indonesian Chinese Islamic Association. With so many different religions practiced in Chinese society, sending presents and expressing congratulations during religious events is customary. Persatuan Islam and Majelis Mujahidin offered a different viewpoint. Because it goes against their beliefs, they generally resist sending christmas greetings.

Discussions of Christmas sometimes focus on the paradox of its being both a Christian Holy Day and a secular shopping season, implicitly suggesting their equivalence. In this article we demonstrate the inadequacy of such statements. We explore the ongoing evolution of Christmas in the Northeast United States since the 17th century, and we show how, thanks in part to Calvinist theology brought by the early Puritan settlers, commerce associated with Christmas has been sacralized over time, become sacred, to the extent that it now, to a considerable extent, subsumes the religious commemoration of Christmas. We suggest some implications of this process.

Every year, Serbian people celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in a solemn manner enclosing various traditions. All these traditions originate from ancient Slavs, who were pagans. Each element and ritual has its own symbolism and significance. They are mainly related to Slavic gods, dead ancestors and some mythical creatures. When the Slavs received Christianity, their customs adopted a new meaning. The church canceled some customs because of their magical properties, but it also preserved others and made them an important part of Christian traditions. Thus Yule and some customs before Christmas Day gained a Christian meaning, so that Serbs could get acquainted with the celebration of Christ?s birth.

In the article the problem of diglossia in the Christmas carol of Hutsuls based on the interaction of Christian and heathen elements is discussed. The sources of the study are the texts of the Christmas carol which were recorded in the village of Kryvorivnia (Verkhovyna district, Ivano-Frankivsk region). These texts are analyzed in a diachronic section: the phenomena of Christianization and dual-faith and their implementation in the Christmas carol tradition of Hutsuls are considered. Based on the content and formal analysis of the text of the Christmas carol, the main motifs and images are singled out. It is emphasized that in these motifs and images of diglossia features are realized. The article outlines the main ideological principles, embodied in Christmas carols, and analyzes the main thematic features of the calendar ritual folklore of a winter cycle. The diff erentiation of terminology, content and formal features of church carols and carols was also conducted. Based on the results of the content analysis of the text content of the carolytic tradition, its main functions are determined. The conclusions state that the modern Christmas carol tradition of Hutsuls reveals a syncretic completion, which combines Christian and pagan elements, and diglossia features most often appear on the content level. Descriptive and comparative methods, as well as elements of discourse analysis, were used for the study.

Streszczenie:
The article describes the specifics of using lexeme Christmas in Lesya Ukrainkaʼs epistolary texts. The research utilizes continuous / overall selection techniques to reveal those specific features. Christmas belongs to the twelve most significant holidays of the Christian calendar. The addressee uses two basic names concerning this holiday: a rokove (annual) festival and Christmastide. The analysis of the compiled register of all the fixed contexts made it possible to determine four main functions of this lexeme in its functional style: chronotopic (most productive), nominative, ceremonial and identifying (low-productive). Chronotope property of syntactic constructions with a lexeme Rizdvo (Christmas) reflects the three-dimensional event space of the addresser and its addressees, which corresponds to one of the traditions of describing different phenomena in the national-linguistic tradition of the Ukrainians. Each event takes place before / during or after the holiday. To convey this, Lesya Ukrainka used the following grammatical variants: do/do samoho Rizdva (before Christmas) and pered Rizdvom (before Christmas) – a prospective period, ob Rizdvi and na Rizdvo (at Christmas) with a clear predominance of the second variant – vlasne na Rizdvo (actually at Christmas); retrospective period – vid (vid samoho) Rizdva (since the very Christmas), z Rizdva / od Rizdva (from Christmas), po Rizdvi (after Christmas). The customary modern Ukrainian version for post-Christmas period «pislia Rizdva» has not been revealed in Lesya Ukrainkaʼs epistolary texts. The observed authorʼs evaluations of the very process of celebrating Christmas (like other holidays) give grounds for asserting the overwhelming negative attitude of the addresser to any holiday. Various subjective factors are considered as the reason for it, namely poetessʼ internal rejection of certain stereotypical traditions of celebrations (a lot of visits, entertainments, parties and so on). The study elucidates the peculiarities of the Christmas greetings used in the poetessʼ letters to various addressees, which probably also determines the linguistic mode of everyday communication of the Ukrainians, in particular, in the family. The study has not revealed any of the typical traditional congratulations in modern Ukrainian language – Khrystos Narodyvsia! Khrystos rodyvsia! Khrystos Rozhdaietsia! (Christ was born!). Alternatively, three phonetic variants of pre-Christmas greetings are fixed – Greetings on Christmas Eve: Sviatyi Vechir! Sviatyi Vecher! Sviatyi Vechor! (Holy Evening!).

The object of the authors’ research was the festive Christmas window displays of brick-and-mortar retail stores. The main objective of the research was to identify the dominant colours, symbols and signage of Christmas festive displays of retail brick-and-mortar stores across different product categories and countries around the world. A total of 229 retail Christmas window displays, from 14 countries around the world, across 11 assortment categories, ready for the Christmas season in 2020, 2021 and 2022, were examined. The theme of Christmas resonates in retail store windows from the beginning of November until 24 December. After this date, the issue of sales dominates the window displays. The main method of the research was the content analysis used to analyse the documents in order to determine the frequency of occurrence of the pre-given categories. Given that our interpretation of Christmas is based on its Christian foundation, it is not surprising that the main universal colours and symbols of interpretation identified are rooted in Christianity, while other, complementary ones (e.g. Santa Claus with a reindeer sleigh, a snowy landscape, or a gingerbread house) and the signage are the result of changes in popular culture over time.

Blessed Christmas: Tradition and Resistance in Sonja Åkesson’s Christmas Poems This article deals with five poems by Sonja Åkesson, all of which feature a Christmas celebration as their common theme, and analyze Christmas through a gendered perspective as well by means of a sharp critique of consumption. The most typical device of Åkesson’s style is the ironic double; when looking at Christmas through her eyes, the reader is provided with a double image. The first two poems are written in the middle of the fifties and are seen through the eyes of a child. The latter three poems, written about ten years later, have the perspective of the house wife. Åkesson criticizes the false pictures of a happy old-fashioned celebration, of the happy child at Christmas, and of the clever house wife bringing Christmas into the house. At the same time, these five poems are characterized by joy and warmth. My readings of these poems are contextualized using some of the cultural history surrounding the Christmas holiday. The young Christian church initiated this feast during the 4th century, and intended it as a replacement for three other Roman occasions: two of them orgiastic Dionysian festivals and the third a quiet day of sun worship. The church also planned to strengthen the bonds between parent and child with the help of this new feast. From a cosmological perspective, any family should model the sacred family during Christmas. I argue that this concept is an impossible one. From a gender-studies perspective, the very idea will place a woman and house wife in a very peculiar situation, a fact brilliantly developed through Åkesson’s five poems.

Based on the analysis of materials from the folklore archive of Pskov State University, recorded on the territory of the Pskov-Pechory Obozerye and Velikorechye during the folklore expeditions of the 1970s — 2000s, the article demonstrates the process of interpenetration of the archaic and Christian traditions during the Christmas season. This process causes the blurring of the borders between archaic and Christian types of carolling in most of the territory under consideration. This is manifested in the terminology used in relation to carolling, in the transfer of specific dressing traditions from Pagan to Christian customs, as well as in the content of texts that were performed by “Christ glorifiers”. The texts included such structural elements of archaic carols as the demand for a gift and threats to stingy hosts. The role of the “Christmas star” is explained as a generalized symbol of the holiday; a set of data on the methods of its making and use as an attribute defined by folk tradition is presented.

Streszczenie:
F. M. Dostoevsky's novel The Raw Youth (1874-1875) and A Writer's Diary (1876) were created in the tradition of Christian calendar prose, which is aligned with sacred time. The two works are united by the idea of the religious transformation of personality, the salvation of the soul and unification around the Gospel Truth, the search for ideal foundations in the Russian people, and reflections on their purpose. Dostoevsky introduces Easter narratives into the novel and into A Writer's Diary in 1876: the story of Makar Dolgoruky about the merchant Skotoboinikov, the opera by Trishatov, the story The Peasant Marey. The plot and storyline motives of these works and the novel go back to the parable of the Prodigal Son and the Book of Job. They share the motives of suffering, redemption and resurrection. A Writer's Diary of 1876, which utilizes a system of references to the novel, starts from January and contains a reference to the celebration of the Nativity (the Christmas story The Beggar Boy at Christ's Christmas Tree, quotes from a Christmas worship service), and ends in December, at the beginning of advent. A Writer's Diary contains an appeal to Christmas and Easter as the most significant dates of the church calendar and the writer's personal biographical time. In the chapter More on a simple but tricky case (December), Dostoevsky recalls how he survived the December 22 execution on the Semyonovsky parade ground and a revival on Christmas Eve; in the Easter story The Peasant Marey (February), he tells the story of how he acquired faith in the Russian people in penal servitude during Easter. The author's position in the novel The Raw Youth and A Writer's Diary of 1876 can’t be comprehended without referring to the gospel and liturgical text. The Gospel parable of the Prodigal Son and the Book of Job, which are referenced in the novel and A Writer's Diary, are read in church before and during Great Lent.

Streszczenie:
The author argues that Marina Paley, being an intellectual writer, tries to find out genre form for proper representation of her worldview and aesthetic values. Consequently Paley pays attention to the Christian literary tradition The purpose of writing the article was to study the writer’s embodiment of the author’s consciousness in the genre forms of the Yuletide/Christmas story (“An Enclave for two”) and parable (parable novel “Choir”). The objective of the article is to analyze the embodiment of the writer’s consciousness in the genre forms of the Yuletide/Christmas story and parable. The article reviews the characteristics and peculiarities of modern Yuletide/ Christmas story. Many contemporary Russian writers use this genre form to criticize the immorality and lack of spirituality of society. Marina Paley also interprets the motive of the miracle in her own way. The miracle is the result of personal efforts. However, there is no spiritual rebirth or revelation with the character, she remains true to her conviction. Th us, Christmas time also acts as a test of a person’s character. The Christmas motifs are also can be found in the play “The Immersion” that shows a sharply critical view of the social structure. In contrast to the story “An Enclave for Two”, the eff orts of the characters do not bring results, the Christmas miracle does not happen, and the Yuletide and Christmas elements in this play emphasize only the absurdity of the soulless reality. The interpretation of the parable genre allows the author, without descending to a moralizing text with an action guide, to create a work that encourages an analytical look at the nature of human relationships and Divine Providence. Keywords: Marina Paley, literary tradition, parable, Christmas story, Yuletide story, tragicomedy buff.

This nonfiction essay recounts the story of a sister I never knew I had, and how I ended up inadvertently copying my mother’s pattern of keeping a secret about my own pregnancy. But it’s also an essay of how to write about silence, how families adopt patterns of silence, and how being a teacher of writing is my effort to break a pattern of secrets and shame.
