Abstract The chora is one of the most perplexing as well as neglected concepts in Whitehead’s metaphysics. Explicitly drawing on Plato’s Receptacle Whitehead reinterprets the chora as the place, in between physics and meta-physics, where connections among actual entities happen. However, the relation between Whitehead’s and Plato’s chorai remains widely unexplored. This article aims to correct this oversight. By comparing the two philosophers, I intend to argue that, differences aside, the two philosophers adopted the chora to answer the common question as to how things can be identified in the flux of events. In this way, I hope not only to clarify the obscure role of the chora in Whitehead’s metaphysics and its relation to Plato, but also to explore the complex process of identification.

Este artigo descreve e analisa as formas de crítica à imprensa e ataque à identidade profissional de jornalistas existentes em tweets de Jair Bolsonaro e seus três filhos, Carlos Bolsonaro, Eduardo Bolsonaro e Flávio Bolsonaro. O objetivo é descrever e analisar as críticas à imprensa e os ataques à identidade profissional de jornalistas publicadas nos seus respectivos perfis. Foram arquivadas 621 postagens feitas pelos políticos nos primeiros 15 dias de março de 2020, das quais 135 apresentaram conteúdos pertinentes ao recorte temático proposto. A análise aponta o protagonismo exercido pelas redes sociais digitais na mediação do debate público político. Resgata as relações que têm sido estabelecidas historicamente no Brasil entre o poder político e a imprensa, sobretudo no que toca à identidade profissional dos jornalistas. Reflete sobre a imprensa como instituição que historicamente ocupou o papel de Poder Moderador e supostamente garantidor da democracia. A partir da observação do conteúdo dos tweets arquivados, este trabalho identificou três finalidades principais nas publicações do clã: atacar a imprensa tradicional em geral, atacar veículos de comunicação específicos e atacar individualmente jornalistas. Constatou-se que o presidente e seus filhos tentam esvaziar a credibilidade da imprensa e atuam para fazer de seus perfis nas redes sociais os únicos meios fidedignos para informar a população sobre política.

Kristeva, in her publication Revolution In Poetic Language, refers to the concept of chora to reconstruct the demolition of emotionality and rationality in humankind. Chora is a space constituted of the Semiotic and the Symbolic for the preparation to generate humanity. I noticed that Kristevas chora functions not only in a semiotic way but also interpenetrates into the thoughts of Chinese Daoism. I believe this discovery is beneficial for us to understand Kristevas psychoanalysis in a different way with some cultural exchanges; in addition, we can come up with a new perspective on the traditional discussion of Daoism from western theories. I first reanalyzed Kristevas chora in a semiotic way. Then I argued that chora assimilates Chinese Daoism in two pieces of evidence: Chora can be valued as a Daoist matrix where drives or motivations are generated. More, chora shares the common features of Laozis potentiality and Zhuangzis obscurity.

Mesmo diante dos avanços sociais e jurídicos, ainda se vive sob domínio patriarcal. Nesse sentido, a partir de uma análise da música “ajoelha e chora”, da Banda gaúcha Tchê Garotos, busca-se verificar como fatores culturais e históricos influenciam na construção identitária das mulheres em torno de elementos que permitem a exposição dos corpos femininos a todos os tipos de violência, dentre as quais a objetificação. Metodologicamente opera-se nas premissas da dialética ancorada em estudos bibliográficos. Nesse contexto, essa pesquisa está focada na análise do lugar simbólico ocupado pelas mulheres na cultura gaúcha, a partir de um dos seus mais importantes meios de afirmação e divulgação, que é a música regional. Para tanto, parte-se de uma análise sobre o próprio papel da música como instrumento de manifestação, criação e afirmação de valores culturais. Os resultados apontam para a manutenção, no âmbito das expressões culturais, especialmente a música, de elementos associados ao machismo, a objetificação e desumanização das mulheres, além, fatores incompatíveis com uma sociedade democrática, plural e igualitária.

Chora Where Heaven and Earth Meet – Based on Russian Oral Tradition The phenomenon of the vast majority of texts in Russian oral literature is related to the occurrence of chora. The Ruthenian land is described as an icon of heavenly reality there. The term chora was used by Plato in Timaeus, giving it a broader, extra-geometric and extra-geographical meaning. Chora contains hierophany, it invalidates space in a geometric and geographical sense. Oral tradition demonstrates the search for a place in Ruthenia that is conducive to the birth of a real man – Plato called the place chora. The idea of this place differed from the idea of Moscow III Rome – it did not refer to the tsar or the state, but to the land and man striving for salvation. The tsar and the state gain a new, heavenly countenance here – only in the perspective of transformation. This idea is not prospective, it refers to eternity. The basic ontological heritage in the identity of the Ruthenian existence, which is not subject to time, has been preserved. Chora, as a Ruthenian space, has an existential and identity dimension.

This paper focuses on the geographical notion of chora, i.e. the earth as ethically shaped by human practices, according to my interpretation of Strabo’s Geography. I argue that this chora is bearer of a logic of the included third/middle, as it coincides with the logico-semantic third way of Plato’s notion of image. Re-interpreting today’s geographical turns in the light of a re-turn to Strabo’s chora/image, I argue that this return is moral, inasmuch as the geographical chora shows that ethics has preserved a logic of image and representation, which is the most ancient in Western thought, but also the most appropriate to contemporary issues. The geographical model of chora which I delineate here – a complex model on the basis of which ethics works in the same way as an image – is also the attempt to propose an alternative theory on the nature of image as well as an alternative interpretation of the role which ethics can play in current debate.

Abstract This article employs Julia Kristeva’s concept of the chora as a means to describe and analyze the dancing body and the body of the spectator. In Revolution in Poetic Language, Kristeva posits the chora as analogous to vocal and kinetic rhythms of the body. As an audience member who also trained as a dancer, I find my body responds instantaneously and rhythmically to dance performances, thereby connecting to the chora. Subsequently, the act of writing becomes a physical manifestation of the theatrical experience. My research questions include: what role does the body play in the transmission of dance to language? How is the essence of the chora transferred from dancer to spectator in the experience of watching a performance? The writings of Julia Kristeva, Roland Barthes and John Martin provide important theories of the body that aid in answering these research questions. With an awareness of the chora in each subject, I examine the transfer of the chora from the dancer to the spectator in the work of Montréal choreographer Marie Chouinard, specifically the male solo Des feux dans la nuit. Marie Chouinard stands out as one of Canada’s most successful and internationally recognized contemporary choreographers. This article considers the impact of Chouinard’s dancing body on the spectator.

The Platonic chora, as the third, intermediating term, has been left in a state of virtual dereliction in the West. Its ternary logic transmutes oppositional logics of binarity, including the oppositions of interior and exterior, psyche and cosmos, human and divine. In this article I (psycho)analyse the mytho-philosophical trajectory of the chora from Plato’s Timaeus, and Diotimaic love found in Plato’s Symposium. I argue that both the disruptive force of Diotimaic love, and the subversive chora with its ‘bastard reasoning’1 are indicative of Plato’s efforts to resolve an internalized conflict which mirrored a larger conflict found in his cultural epoch, a time in which abstracted self-consciousness was on the horizon and chthonic-participatory consciousness was receding. In (re)membering the chora I find a fecund space-time, an enabling field, for human participatory becoming-with the cosmos.

Referring to the work of Julia Kristeva, this article seeks to perform a comparative analysis between Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter), as she appears within the remit of Joss Whedon and David Greenwalts’s Angel (1999–2004), and Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) in John Logan’s Penny Dreadful (2014–2016). Taking each character as a case study, this article seeks to elucidate the precarious subject positions of central female leads in a team/ensemble horror television series in order to assess whether or not and how the portrayal and characterisation thereof has changed over two decades. To do so, this article employs a theoretical framing that examines the question of agency and power by assessing both characters as what I will call “Choraic conduits”. As such, both characters’ relation, manipulation of/by, and mediation of the supernatural as envisaged and presented in their respective diegetic worlds are analysed in themselves and comparatively against one another. Key concerns here are the questions and problems surrounding each character’s agency over her powers and the supernatural/spiritual realm(s) from which they emerge, as well as the psycho-physical and symbolic consequences of not only the possession of their respective powers, but the micro and macroscopic consequences of how they are used in their respective diegetic worlds.

Introdução: Nos atendimentos clínicos realizados na Atenção Primária, não é incomum que pacientes chorem durante a consulta. No entanto, os profissionais que atuam nesse âmbito podem não se sentir preparados para lidar com esse cenário, em virtude da falta de conhecimento de ferramentas para lidar com esse tipo de demanda. Objetivo: Este estudo propôs-se a elencar e categorizar técnicas para a abordagem ao paciente que chora, por meio de entrevistas realizadas com preceptores do Programa de Residência em Medicina de Família e Comunidade (MFC) da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde do Rio de Janeiro. Método: Foram realizadas entrevistas com 16 preceptores, que foram gravadas, transcritas e analisadas segundo os preceitos de Bardin. Resultados: Como resultado, obteve-se o compilado de 94 citações de técnicas não verbais e 27 de técnicas verbais, além dos modos de aprendizado delas, que ocorreram sobretudo por conhecimentos obtidos na Residência em MFC, na experiência prática e na leitura de temas correlatos, destacando-se referências sobre comunicação clínica. Ademais, foram categorizados os motivos para o choro dos pacientes, os sentimentos dos médicos, os objetivos das técnicas utilizadas e se se considera que elas auxiliam tanto médicos quanto pacientes nessa situação. Conclusões: Conclui-se que as técnicas empregadas pertencem ao conjunto de ferramentas de comunicação clínica baseadas em empatia e vínculo, e que o primeiro contato com elas ocorre geralmente na Residência em MFC; posteriormente elas são aprimoradas com a experiência clínica. Nesse contexto, destaca-se a importância da ênfase dada ao tema durante a especialização e da educação continuada em benefício do médico e do paciente.

The aim of this essay is to reclaim Kristeva's concept of the semiotic chora by re-inscribing it as an intervention in the context of two important postmodern debates. The first debate relates to the philosophical problem of “the beginning before the Beginning.” The second concerns the necessity and possibility of mediation between incommensurable entities: the “demonic” and the social, desire and the Law, material production and representation. I contend: (1) that the introduction of the chora in RPL is part of Kristeva's effort to restore the legacy of a materialist economy of the beginning, as this is glimpsed in Plato's Timaeus from which Kristeva borrows her controversial term; and (2) that the chora constitutes an attempt on Kristeva's part to explore a third space of ambiguous relationality in the context of which our transcendence to the “demonic” lies less “beyond us” than “in-between.”

How does Plotinus interpret the chora in Plato’s Timaeus ? For him, Timaeus 48e‑52d deals with matter (hyle). The identification of chora with hyle goes back to Aristotle’s Physics IV.2. Aristotle’s interpretation of Plato’s chora as matter was echoed by Theophrastus and the Stoics and prevailed in Middle‑Platonist, neo‑Pythagorean and early Christian authors. In addition to the identification of chora with hyle, the ancient interpreters of the Timaeus conflated hyle with Plato’s ananke (Tim. 47e‑48a). Plato himself distinguishes between chora and ananke. The latter denotes everything that appears in the “receptacle” prior to the ordering of the world by the demiurge, while chora is another name for the receptacle itself. In Plato, the receptacle accounts for the fact both that there are transient images of intelligible beings and that these images appear to occupy a place, i.e. that they are spatially extended. This is why the receptacle is given its alternative name “ground” (chora) and why it is also called “place” (topos) and “seat” (hedra). Although the receptacle itself cannot be spatially extended in the same way as that which appears “in it”, it is the cause of spatial extension. For Plotinus, two characteristics of matter are of primary importance : lack of size and impassibility. In the treatise II .4.[12].2‑5, he highlights the former, and in III .6[26].7‑19 he elaborates on the latter, while commenting once again on the former. In III .6[26].7‑19, he argues that this conception of matter is in line with how Plato conceives of it in the Timaeus. The “receptacle” cannot be acted upon (paschein) nor can it possess any size (megethos). Only the images of true beings “in” it can. In doing so, however, they make matter appear to “stretch out” alongside themselves. But this is not actually the case, because matter itself has no extension. On one point, however, Plotinus’ account differs from Plato’s. According to Plotinus, not only does matter not possess size, but it is not the cause of size either. The size of the appearances derives from the formulas (logoi) of which these appearances are images. Each formula encompasses within itself the measure of the size that its image will assume : the formula of horse encompasses the size of a particular horse, the formula of human being the size of a particular human being. Plotinus describes in more detail how a formula, in unfolding out of the soul, “stretches out”, thus acquiring size. He also makes a comparison between this process and the way in which formulas in the human soul display images of themselves in our image‑making faculty. He characterises this process as a motion starting from the formula and resulting in its “division” (merismos). This is what makes the image of the formula extended, i.e. divided partes extra partes, when it appears against the invisible background of matter. W pracy przedstawiono przypadek 25-letniej chorej, u której zaraz po endoskopowej cholangiopankreatografii wstecznej połączonej ze sfinkterotomią w celu ewakuacji złogów z przewodu żółciowego wspólnego rozwinęły się kliniczne i radiologiczne objawy wskazujące na jatrogenną, zaotrzewnową perforację dwunastnicy. Jednocześnie u chorej rozwinęło się ostre zapalenie trzustki, potwierdzone badaniami biochemicznymi. Chora była operowana, jednak śródoperacyjnie nie znaleziono otworu w dwunastnicy, tylko rozległy naciek zapalny przestrzeni zaotrzewnowej bez obecności żółci i typowe cechy ostrego zapalenia trzustki. Operacja ograniczyła się do ekspozycji dwunastnicy i przestrzeni zaotrzewnowej, drenażu oraz założenia jejunostomii odżywczej. Przebieg pooperacyjny był niepowikłany, ostre zapalenie trzustki nie przeszło w formę martwiczą, a chora ostatecznie wyzdrowiała.

In Asia Minor (modern Turkey), the authors found an example of a typical and well-studied polis of Kyaneai, province of Lycia. The article reveals the basic principles of the formation of this polis on the basis of the central location of the main city asty surrounded by district cities – demoses with a balanced development of its entire territory – chora. An analysis of various types of small settlements is provided, the road structure of this polis and its external relations is revealed, the importance of distances and accessibility between each of its elements and the central city as factors of harmonious and sustainable development is emphasized. An assessment of its population in the Hellenistic and Roman periods is given, and on this basis, a scheme of the chora of a typical continental polis is proposed, which allows to determine the universal principles of its formation and use them as a tool for further research and application in modern urban planning.

Este ensaio objetiva discutir a representação da água como fonte na qual bebem as poetisas, examinando as categorias de água bachelardianas nos sonetos retirados da obra de Florbela Espanca e Gilka Machado. Para o efeito, e de modo a instaurar uma leitura dialógica fundamentada entre os sonetos das duas autoras, recorreu-se, para alicerçar o quadro teórico, ao estudo de Gaston Bachelard (1989), assim como aos estudos de Gilbert Durand (2012) e de Joke J. Hermsen (2022). Por outro lado, a bibliografia passiva levou em consideração os poucos estudos que, até agora, tangenciaram este tema e, por isso, a nossa preocupação será a de aprofundar a imagética aquática nas escritoras em apreço.

Abstract The near chora (agricultural land) of Tauric Chersonesos was investigated using multiyear remote sensing data and field surveys. The boundaries of the land plots were studied with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology and an analysis of satellite images. Reliable reconstruction of the borders has been done for 231 plots (from a total of about 380), which is approximately 53% of the Chersonesean chora. During the last 50 years, most of the ancient land plots have been destroyed by modern buildings, roads, or forests. However, in the 1960s, a significant part of the chora was still preserved. Changes in preservation with time were studied with the aid of satellite images that were made in 1966 and 2015. During that period, it was found that the number of plots with almost-complete preservation decreased from 47 to 0. Those land plots whose preservation was better than 50% dropped from 104 to 4. A temporal map shows this decline in preservation. It was found that the areas of land plots could be determined accurately with satellite images; compared to field surveys, this accuracy was about 99%.

Media representations of destinations play a powerful role in tourism appeal. The narrator assumes a role infused with knowledge and power, employing discourse to describe and interpret places and people to entice armchair audiences to not only travel vicariously alongside them, but to follow in their footsteps. This review article uses the English actor and writer Michael Palin to examine this phenomenon through the lens of the flâneur and choraster. Palin's travels have traditionally been viewed based on their ability to create space from the perspective of a representational voice of authority. In the present article, we wish to ask whether the power of the travel narrator for tourism is perhaps better expressed in their ability to develop a counter (or chora discourse), one where we are able to see space as locally contested. Palin's narrator expresses appreciation of his reliance on the people (chora) that inhabit the spaces he visits. His narrations of travel evidence how the flâneur perspective is influenced (and/or disrupted) by a chora in two ways—that which influences the perspective before travel and directs the gaze, and those that occupy and inscribe meaning on the spaces that are traveled to, that influences and/or forms experience.

This paper theorizes the use of water imagery in Elizabeth Bishop’s selected postmodern poetry namely, “The Map”, “The Imaginary Iceberg” and “The Man-Moth”. Speaking in the language of tears, lake, bay, river, strait, sea and ocean, Bishop personifies water for culture and its language. It is on this basis that Bishop comes close to the French psychoanalyst and linguist, Julia Kristeva’s concept of the semiotic chora. Kristeva calls it a space of maternal discourse, where the fluid realm of mother’s body called chora celebrates the fluidity of semiotic desires and expresses them through the symbolic language of the world outside her body. Bishop revisits this bodily space, time and again, to acquire subjectivity through the mother/child bond. Bishop’s poetic language celebrates this relationship between the semiotic (maternal) and symbolic (paternal) realm of language. The symbolic enables the semiotic to express itself, and the semiotic shatters the rigidity of the symbolic meanings through an ongoing process of signification. This reciprocity, through the semiotic chora, makes Bishop’s identity fluid and always in motion towards multiplicity. This plurality brings newness to Bishop’s poetry and engages the researcher with fresh perspectives of outer vision, inner perception, structural patterns and make her poetry eventful.

Сравнительный анализ их архитектурно-строительных особенностей показывает, что данная группа поселенческих структур не столь однородна, как было принято считать прежде. The article examines the reasons for grouping together a number of mansions located in 4th and 3rd centuries BCE in European Bosporus (Kerch Peninsula) as a separate group among other rural settlements on the Azov Sea coast, the “royal” chora. A comparative study of the architecture and construction of these mansions shows that the “royal” chora was not such a uniform group as it had been thought before.

Este trabalho propõe uma leitura do filme Paris, Texas, de Wim Wenders a partir do questionamento do estranhamento do protagonista do filme, Travis, diante da sua própria imagem refletida no espelho. O objetivo é relacionar a rejeição da própria imagem, pelo personagem, com sua tendência a se direcionar a locais sem paredes. Para isso, são analisados os conceitos de estádio do espelho, de Jacques Lacan, e de chora semiótica e abjeção de Julia Kristeva. É possível perceber que o protagonista se encontra em uma regressão a um estágio anterior ao eu especular, denominado, por Kristeva, como chora semiótica, em que há uma tendência de retorno ao corpo materno, o qual, no filme, é metonimizado por um lote vago comprado por Travis em Paris, Texas.
