The thesis is an archaeological study of the island of Lesbos, with emphasis upon the central settlement of the Greek polis (the asty) and the surrounding territory of each city (the chora). Chapter 1 offers an introductory overview of the physical constitution of the island. Chapter 2 considers the development through the Dark Age and Archaic periods of the settlements which became the central asty of the poleis in Lesbos. Chapter 3 focuses on the chora of the poleis in early Lesbos, examining a series of towers and enclosures of Lesbian polygonal masonry. Detailed treatment is given to the style of masonry employed in order to give indications about the likely date of the structures. The social angle is also examined, exploring the possible group identity and social definition in the chora, and the other roles played out by the structures. Possible implications to be drawn from the lack of similar structures in the chora of the polis of Mytilene are considered. Both discussions in Chapters 2 and 3 are contextualised with other regional/island surveys to explore points of similarity or difference between Lesbos and the rest of Greece. -- The conclusions of the two studies are then summarised, drawn together, and supplemented by six appendices. The first four appendices tabulate the archaeological data from the island, examine epigraphical data for agricultural estates in the Roman Imperial period, discuss the pine forest in eastern Lesbos, and finally the distribution of epigraphical finds in Lesbos. A penultimate study considers the literary evidence of the war for Sigeion between the Mytileneans and the Athenians. In the last appendix, there is a re-examination of the work and conclusions of Page concerning the creation of a framework for Lesbian history in the late seventh and early sixth centuries from the fragments of Alkaios' poetry.

Arising out of the work of Marshall McLuhan, Eric Havelock, Walter Ong, Jacques Derrida and Gregory Ulmer, among others, it is widely thought there are three stages in the history of human communication: the oral, the literate and the electronic. Nonetheless, debate is ongoing over the integration, ordering and the substantive separation of these stages. An upshot of these debates is that each stage is loosely allied to a particular socio/political structure: hunter/gatherer or tribal societies, nation states, and globalisation respectively. In the current alloying of ‘electronic communication’ and ‘globalisation’ though there is a rising interest in what is termed ‘new regionalism’, or regionalisation, even regionality. Accordingly, Chora-Logic: Electracy as Regional Epistemology examines the possibility of an emerging conceptual alliance (and through reference to two Australian regions a sometimes embodied and situated one) between the embryonic communicational infrastructure of electracy and the age-old spatial scale of the region, a relationship that might just come to represent a means of rethinking the civic and the psychic, the commercial and governmental frameworks of an electro-energised global skein. It may also be a way of reinvigorating a study in the relation of the body (in its capacity as a citizen-subject) to the nation state, especially as all these entities are increasingly though ambiguously constituted in and through globalisation. The method of synthesising and antagonising these relations between electracy and regionalism is through the philosophy of chora, Plato’s conception of embodied place as found in the middle section of the Timaeus, coaxed along by a range of interpretations of this important genesis myth in Western philosophy. In particular, chora is taken up in the work of Gregory Ulmer as a key method in the ongoing conceptualisation of an electrate epistemology. Arising out of these concerns Chora-Logic is an experimental re-configuration of the sovereign, abstracted and disembodied citizen-subject of the Cartesian mould (a significant psycho-political mooring of the literate national character) to one situated both in the virtual density and multidimensional actuality of a particular place (organically conceived of herein as an idiosyncratic mix of psychic, domestic, workplace, local and regional proximities), but whose both [dis][embodied] self-knowledge and world-knowledge are now increasingly realised by access to an electronically arbitrated global/regional polis. In sound-bite terms, the bumper sticker could just as easily proclaim the following inversion: ‘Think and feel chora-logically, act globally’. Finally, the nucleus of Chora-Logic: Electracy as Regional Epistemology is a risky praxis whose experimental eddy (in both formal and content terms) spins within the current ambivalence, uncertainty and fast-paced change in electronic communicative arrangements (electracy), as these are themselves wrapped in the psychic and socio-political variabilities of spatial affiliation, all of which are symbiotically entwined regardless of the historical period and/or the geographical context.

The present study has the title: "Men don't cry: the sexual abuse against boys". In Brazil, in 2012, it was registered 10425 cases of sexual abuse against children and youngsters, where 8677 were against girls. In the majority of cases the perpretator of the abuse is a male and from the trust circle of the child. The diference between male victims and female victims is very obvious and the perpetrators - in their majority - are men. Why do we study boys as victims? The invisibility of boys in the context of sexual victimisation called our attention and became the focus of this research. Some cultural factors corroborate for the boys' sexual victimisation concealing, such as: the understanding of the fact with naturality comprehending the event as "man's thing"; the heritage of resistance and male virility, by mean of which hide what happened, by fear of social reprisal and of futures questioning about the victim's masculinity. The study's objective consisted in investigate the consequences of the sexual abuse for the boy and analise the repercussion of the sexual violence against the man/boy in the familiar convivence and communitarian. Of qualitative nature, we performed profound interviews with three boys and a man that experienced sexual abuse, two mothers and one victimised boy's carer. The research's results revealed different meanings atributed to the suffered sexual abuse, according to trajectory and the experiences of each subject. The homossexuality fear developed from sexual abuse was present in some interviewed's speech, as well as the reproduction of the abuse. Several historical advances through the action of different social movements have gained a solid agenda about the topic in general agenda of public policy. However, the cultural transformation that can alter the rigidity of genres is still a challenge to be pursued, as well as advance our understanding of sexuality in its human dimension and authorization to talk about it, without configurating other violence for this
O presente estudo tem por título: Homem não chora: o abuso sexual contra meninos . No Brasil, em 2012, foram registrados 10425 casos de abuso sexual contra crianças e jovens, sendo 8677 deles contra meninas. Na maioria dos casos o autor do abuso é do sexo masculino e do círculo de confiança da criança. A diferença entre as vítimas femininas e masculinas é gritante e os autores - em sua maioria - são homens. Por que estudar os meninos como vítimas? A invisibilidade do menino no contexto de vitimização sexual chamou nossa atenção e se tornou foco desta pesquisa. Alguns fatores culturais corroboram para o ocultamento da vitimização sexual do menino, tais como: a compreensão do fato com naturalidade entendendo o evento como coisa de homem ; a herança da resistência e da virilidade masculina, por meio da qual se esconde o ocorrido, por medo de represálias sociais e de questionamentos futuros sobre a masculinidade da vítima. O objetivo do estudo consistiu em perquirir as consequências do abuso sexual para o menino e em analisar a repercussão da violência sexual contra o homem/menino na convivência familiar e comunitária. De natureza qualitativa, realizamos entrevistas aprofundadas com três meninos e um homem que vivenciaram o abuso sexual, duas mães e uma cuidadora de meninos vitimizados sexualmente. Os resultados da pesquisa revelaram diferentes sentidos atribuídos ao abuso sexual sofrido, conforme a trajetória e as vivências de cada sujeito. O medo da homossexualidade desenvolvida a partir do abuso sexual se fez presente em alguns discursos dos entrevistados, bem como o da reprodução do abuso. Diversos avanços históricos por meio da ação de diferentes movimentos sociais conquistaram uma pauta contínua sobre a temática na agenda geral da política pública. Contudo, a transformação cultural capaz de alterar a fixidez dos gêneros ainda é um desafio a ser perseguido, assim como o avanço na compreensão da sexualidade em sua dimensão humana e a autorização para falar sobre ela, sem que para isso tenha que configurar-se outra violência

In this thesis church space is examined as a product of the material and conceptual interactions between architecture, painting, symbolism and the faithful. In order to study the conditions and factors that shape church space, I undertake a case study that examines the space of the Chora, a Byzantine monastery situated in Istanbul, Turkey, as a product of the intersection between art, symbolism, and the faithful. The parekklesion of the Chora (1316-1321) is explored within the context of its architectural and iconographic design, its symbolic function, and in relation to the way that the faithful experienced their presence within it. In addressing issues related to the experience of church space by the faithful, I problematise a reading of space as γίγνεσθαι – a realm of becoming – and engage with questions that address the involvement of the body – material and conceptual – in the process of producing space and meaning. The concept of church space as an interactional realm of becoming is understood as closely linked to a perception of church as a space in between that unites the human and the divine in a ‘heaven on earth’ and facilitates communication between them. In addressing the complexity of experiencing church space, this study challenges views of space as an empty medium and attempts to establish links between church space as an intermediate domain of becoming and the philosophical concept of chora.

Viuvez. Palavra que traz embutida uma ausência. Fenômeno que chega na vida de alguém sem fazer parte, previamente, do seu projeto de vida, e que por isso tende a trazer modificações inesperadas e provavelmente jamais imaginadas. Dentre todos os eventos que ocorrem com as pessoas durante seu ciclo de vida, aquele relacionado com a morte de alguém muito próximo afetivamente é talvez o mais traumático, deixando as marcas mais profundas. Em grande parte das investigações onde a viuvez é assinalada, isto é feito de forma incidental, dentro de trabalhos cujo foco central é a velhice e as mulheres, além de serem oriundas predominantemente da área biomédica e/ou saúde mental. No Brasil, a pesquisa em viuvez tem contemplado majoritariamente o gênero feminino, havendo núcleos de estudos em algumas universidades brasileiras, cujas linhas de pesquisa se referem a idosas. Estudos e publicações sobre viuvez, como problema enfrentado também por homens, são bastante escassos em todos os campos do conhecimento científico. É aqui que se insere esta tese: um estudo sobre viuvez masculina em camadas médias urbanas. Para tentar dar conta da proposta, centro a investigação nos procedimentos de reorganização de vida de homens residentes na grande Recife, no Nordeste do Brasil, após a morte da esposa/companheira. Os objetivos da pesquisa buscavam descobrir as reações imediatas, mediatas e tardias desses homens, as eventuais mudanças nos modos de vida e relações sociais, os meios de suporte econômico, de serviços, pessoal-social e pessoal-emocional utilizados, a existência (ou não) de prescrições sociais ligadas à viuvez masculina e as representações que regem esse universo, em nosso meio. O instrumento utilizado para a coleta de dados foi a entrevista narrativa, aplicada em encontro que se realizou, em geral, na residência ou no local de trabalho do enviuvado. O número total de 20 homens compôs a amostra da pesquisa, com idades variando de 36 a 82 anos, e com tempo de viuvez de seis meses a 34 anos. A vivência da doença e/ou morte da esposa foi quase sempre acompanhada integralmente pelo marido. Alguns dos enviuvados recasaram; outros optaram por não fazê-lo; alguns tinham passado por transformações pessoais; a maioria assumiu a administração total da casa. A criação dos filhos, o trabalho e a religiosidade são os recursos de maior impacto para uma adequada adaptação à nova situação. Os principais suportes utilizados vêm das redes sociais, sendo que empregada doméstica e amigo íntimo ocupam uma posição importante entre os apoios recebidos. Todas as histórias narradas mostram um teor de emoção que geralmente os estereótipos culturais e o senso comum negam aos homens. Faz-se a constatação que homens choram, sim: nas entrevistas, a maioria fica com a voz embargada, outros choram livremente, a ponto de não conseguir falar. As emoções, do vivido ontem e da saudade hoje, estão bem presentes. Enfim, esta tese fala de dor, sofrimento e morte, mas também de vida, felicidade e amor. Mas, fundamentalmente, busca contribuir, a partir de experiência local, para a ampliação e legitimação do campo da Antropologia das Emoções, no país

This thesis explores the relation between two interpretations of chôra, drawn from a reading of Plato’s Timaeus. The first I label the elemental chôra. The second, I call the social chôra. The first chapter addresses the elements in Ionian philosophy, with an eye toward the political and social backdrop of the important cosmological notion of isonomia, law of equals. Here social and elemental are continuous. Chapter two looks at the next phase of Presocratic thought, Elea, specifically Parmenides and his influence on later thought, then turns to Heidegger’s reading of Parmenides’ through the key word of alêtheia. Finally, I offer a reading of Parmenides through a different key word— trust. The third chapter examines Plato’s cosmology in the Timaeus, focusing on the way the beginning of this dialogue inflects the dialogue in a political/social direction, putting the social chôra in tension with the elemental chôra that the body of the Timaeus’ discusses. In the fourth chapter, which examines the Phaedrus, this tension is inverted, since this dialogue on writing and justice set in what proves to be the mesmerizing and erotic elemental milieu of the world outside the walls of the polis. The second half of the dissertation turns to some modern thinkers within the phenomenological tradition or its wake who write about elementals. Chapter five examines Gaston Bachelard’s reveries on imagination which dream the natural world of fire, air, water, and earth from the standpoint of what he calls material and dynamic imagination, concepts that imply a strong sense of embodiment. Chapter six treats Levinas’ description of the elemental and fixes it in a stark relation to the human. I will suggest some possible points of contact between the elemental and the social in Levinas. Chapter seven turns to John Sallis’ analysis of the imagination as the means of access proper to the elemental in ways that differ from Bachelard. He position the earth as a fundamental other. I will suggest that in the end his position inherits Heidegger’s lack of emphasis on embodied and needy humanity. Alphonso Lingis offers his own unique reading of the elemental in a more Levinasian and Merleau-Pontian vein, speaking of the directives the world, both human and natural, puts to us, and returning to a philosophy of substance that puts the body in the picture. Chapter eight uses his thought to focus the issue of the dissertation.

This research carried out under the guidance of Mrs. A. Pontrandolfo, Professor at the Salerno university and Mrs. Rouveret, Professor at the Paris X University. Our main goal is to rebuild the diachronic, dynamical, more articulated and less fragmented picture of types of occupation and transformation of the periurban area and of the northern and eastern chora of Poseidonia-Paestum, between the Sele river, in the north, and the actual town of Roccadaspide, in the east, in the period between the foundation of the Greek polis and the resulting Latin colony. The methodological assumptions at the basis of this study are: the "critical" revision of the known information in bibliography, filed documents, diaries of excavations and reports of the Superintendence officers integrated by study of the paleoenvironmental dynamics, and verifications, formalization and aggragation of data aiming to an historical interpretation. The core of this research is the philological analyses of the materials obtained in different ways: an essential anchorage point and a basis for the interpreting proposals relevant to the dynamics of the occupation of the periurban space and the area in the north and in the east of Poseidonia- Paestum. To the census of the unplublished and the filed information, to their geo-localization - when possible - to the analyses of the materials some further data were added. These data are provided by the methodical surfaces reconnissance which, since 2003, have been involving the territory of Poseidonia-Paestum. The archaeological research has shown that before the monumentalization, the city spaces are clearly defined and their outline is based on their functions and on their usages. The northerly and easterly territory is characterized by meaningful presences which play a fundamental role in relationship with the native elements since the beginning of the IV century BC and which adopt different values and connotations until the Romanization. Esta tese é um panorama da história gráfica brasileira de 1837 até 1931, visto pela ótica da representação cômica, do design gráfico e da mentalidade. A idéia principal foi partir de um plano geral para encontrar na década de 1920 a obra conjunta do humorista Aparício Torelly, o Barão de Itararé, e do artista gráfico paraguaio Andrés Guevara. Passando pelos autores mais relevantes deste período, a inspiração rizomática é a própria cronologia, onde os assuntos relacionados a humor, design e mentalidade trepidam e se desdobram em conexões pertinentes e interessantes para o próprio tema. A tese foi concebida em três partes, a saber: A primeira versa sobre o objeto de conhecimento, objeto de estudo, metodologias e fontes; assim como fala brevemente sobre os autores principais Barão & Guevara , mote da estratégia de abordagem do assunto. A segunda parte destrincha os antecedentes históricos sob as óticas propostas através de uma amostragem de fontes primárias (imagens & autores) em contraponto com trechos de importantes fontes secundárias, costurado com comentários que vão propondo novas interpretações e olhares para os mesmos temas e objetos, sem aplicação de juízos de valor, mas apenas mostrando que foi assim que as coisas se passaram. A terceira parte está focada na década de 1920, e é onde encontro os autores alvo e aplico um detalhamento maior, evidenciando um momento de forte gênese e experimentação no design gráfico brasileiro frente à mudança completa de paradigmas com a introdução da estética modernista, e a assimilação e difusão acentuada dos valores burgueses no campo social.
This thesis is an overview of the Brazilian graphic history from 1837 to 1931, seeing by comic graph representations, graphic design and historical mentalities. The main idea was start from a general plan to reach in the 1920s the four hands works of the humorist Aparício Torelly (Barão de Itararé) and the Paraguayan graphic artist Andrés Guevara. Passing by the more relevant artists of this period, the root inspiration is the chronology itself, were the subjects related to humor, design and mentality tremble and unfolding pertinent and interesting connections for the own theme. The work was conceived in three parts: The first one runs upon the knowledge subject, application subject, methodologies and the wellspring of informations; as well as talk briefly about the main authors Barão de Itararé & Guevara , reason of the strategy subject approach. The second part clear up the historical foregoings under the proposed look through an stamp of original wellsprings (images and authors) put against extracts of the more important Brazilian bibliography, sewed with comments that proposes new interpretations and new looks over the same themes and subjects, without judgements, but just showing that was the way the things took place. The third part is focused on 1920 decade, and is where I meet the target authors and apply for more details, making evident the moment of strong creation and experimentation in the Brazilian graphic design face to the complete change of paradigms in order of the introduction of modernist esthetics and the assimilation and great dissemination of burgess values in the social field.

Le but du travail est de reconstituer le cadre dynamique des formes d’occupation de l’aire périurbaine et de la chora septentrionale et orientale de Poseidonia-Paestum, située entre le sanctuaire dédié à Héra, à l’embouchure du Sele, au nord, et la ville de Roccadaspide à l’est, dans la période qui va de la fondation de la polis grecque à la déduction de la colonie latine. La révision «critique» des données déjà connues par une riche bibliographie, des documents d’archives, complétées par l’étude paléo-ambiant, ont été les conditions méthodologiques à la base de ce travail. Le noyau central de la recherche est représenté par l’analyse philologique du matériel, récupéré selon des modalités inégales, point d’ancrage dont il faut tenir compte et base pour les propositions interprétatives relatives aux dynamiques d’occupation de l’espace périurbain et des zones au nord et à l’est. Au recensement des nouvelles publiées et d’archives, à leur géolocalisation, quand possible, à l’analyse du matériel on a accosté les données fournies par les prospections pédestres qui depuis 2003 jusqu’à aujourd’hui intéressent le territoire de Poseidonia. La recherche archéologique a démontré qu’il y a une distinction claire des espaces selon les fonctions. Au nord d’abord et ensuite au sud il y a les grandes nécropoles urbaines. Au contraire à l’est, au sud et à l’ouest dès la fondation de la colonie grecque on trouve des évidences de genre différent, en premier lieu les sanctuaires. La chora au nord et à l’est de Poseidonia est marquée par des présences significatives, lesquelles jouent un rôle fondamental par rapport au milieu indigène dès le début du VIe siècle et qui prennent des connotations et des valeurs différentes jusqu’à la Romanisation
This research, carried out under the guidance of Mrs. A. Pontrandolfo, Professor at the Salerno University and Mrs. Rouveret, Professor at the Paris X University. Our main goal is to rebuild the diachronic, dynamical, more articulated and less fragmented picture of the types of occupation and transformation of the periurban area and of the northern and eastern chora of Poseidonia-Paestum, between the Sele river, in the north, and the actual town of Roccadaspide, in the east, in the period between the foundation of the Greek polis and the resulting Latin colony. The methodological assumptions at the basis of this study are: the "critical" revision of the known information in bibliography, filed documents, diaries of excavations and reports of the Superintendence officers integrated by the study of the paleoenvironmental dynamics, and verifications, formalization and aggregation of data aiming to an historical interpretation. The core of this research is the philological analyses of the materials obtained in different ways: an essential anchorage point and a basis for the interpreting proposals relevant to the dynamics of the occupation of the periurban space and the area in the north and in the east of Poseidonia- Paestum. To the census of the unpublished and the filed information, to their geo-localization – when possible – to the analyses of the materials some further data were added. These data are provided by the methodical surfaces reconnaissance which, since 2003, have been involving the territory of Poseidonia-Paestum. The archaeological research has shown that before the monumentalization, the city spaces are clearly defined and their outline is based on their functions and on their usages. The northerly and easterly territory is characterized by meaningful presences which play a fundamental role in relationship with the native elements since the beginning of the IV century BC and which adopt different values and connotations until the Romanization

The study focuses attention on the chora of Herakleia, the subject of the reconnaissance project of the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of Matera, carried out in close collaboration with the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Basilicata. It returns new data every year, adding important pieces to our knowledge of the chora of one of the most prosperous Greek colonies in the Magna Graecia territory. In surface archaeological research traditional methods have been applied in the field alongside more recent techniques. The computerization of the data in a dedicated database and the computer processing process in a GIS environment, structured specifically for the needs of the project, were fundamental for the management and overall interpretation of spatial and archaeological data. Here we present an overall reading of the data collected to date. In reading the territory through the data presented here, it is essential to consider that the data are still partial, since the Herakleia survey project has not yet been completed, but that in any case refer to a very large part of the area covered by the survey, which allows, therefore, to hypothesize an "average trend" of land occupation. The work is presented by dividing the paper into three parts. The first part is dedicated to the general framework of the area from a geographical and settlement point of view; the first chapter describes the geography and the environment in which the colony is inserted: the morphological system of the colony of Herakleia is outlined, its specific physical-geomorphological, hydrographic and geological characteristics, as well as the spontaneous vegetation characteristics and the current use of the soil. We then proceed with a chapter in which a brief examination of the settlement dynamics of Basilicata is expounded, and then a focus on the colony of Siris-Herakleia through the analysis of ancient sources and a presentation of the history of the studies, as well as of the characteristics archaeological-settlement of the urban center and the chora. The second consists of all the land, suitable for agricultural exploitation, on which the city depended for its livelihood, directly, with the consumption of products, and indirectly, for the development of commercial activities generated in part also by the sale of the surplus. This part of the territory was divided into kleroi, assigned to individual citizens: the act of subdivision of the land was public and took place at the time of the foundation of the apoikìa, representing "... one of the constitutive acts of the birth of a new community ...". In the second part the strategy, the research method and the documentation techniques in the field are then explained. Over the last few decades, the surface archaeological survey has become an indispensable tool for studying the distribution and typology of ancient sites in order to understand the evolution of settlements and territories: even within its limits, it constitutes a large container of information, whose critical analysis allows us to envisage a panorama of the population trends of the territories. The system adopted for the classification of Topographical Units is also explained, through the description of the typological criteria. The second chapter contains the analytical part, dedicated to the catalog of known sites falling within the area affected by our surveys and to the catalog of Topographic Units, containing the new data that emerged during the survey, i.e. the consequential display of the UT data sheets. The catalogue cards show the data for each Topographic Unit found, summarized on the basis of specific items: definition, location and coordinates, dimensions, altitude, type and use of land, vegetation and degree of visibility, method applied, density, brief description, chronology and possible bibliography. Each Topographic Unit card is accompanied by a table relating to the materials found. The third part of the work follows, in which, starting from the elaboration of the available archaeological documentation, the results are outlined by proceeding by "periods" of attendance, use of Topographic Units and types of contexts, from the Neolithic to the Imperial Age. Later, in the chapter of the concluding remarks, the historical-settlement evolution of the Heracleota chora is discussed. Finally, the appendix describes the preliminary stages of a project aimed at identifying evidence of ancient agricultural crops. The project, in fact, has turned in two directions: alongside the carrying out of the archaeological reconnaissance of the surface, which represent the main purpose of the work, "botanical reconnaissance" was carried out, proceeding with the recovery of the wrecks of grapevines. It is an experimental method, built and adapted from time to time, in continuous development. The vine samples found were collected and analyzed with the help of experts in agronomy, applying the techniques of ampelography and geometric morphometry applied to samples of leaves and seeds, in order to make comparisons with seeds from archaeological layers of sites more or less close to Herakleia.

Este é um estudo qualitativo resultante de investigação sobre a correlação de três temas fundamentais para a saúde pública: promoção da saúde, saúde do homem e comunicação em saúde. Partindo-se da premissa de que a saúde do homem é resultante de uma série de questões de ordens socioculturais, considerou-se que a comunicação é elemento central para promover a saúde do referido público. Assim, investigou-se, a partir da literatura, da análise de dados secundários e de entrevistas com agentes estratégicos do Brasil e da província de Quebec, no Canadá, se de fato a comunicação ocupa um lugar de destaque na formulação das estratégias para a saúde do homem. O estudo incorpora elementos metodológicos diversos, como estudos de caso, a Hermenêutica-dialética de Gadamer, entrevistas em profundidade, análise do discurso do sujeito coletivo e revisões de literatura. Todos eles norteados pelos estudos comparados, que conduzem a pesquisa-mãe à qual este trabalho se vincula. Os resultados, dispostos num conjunto de quatro artigos científicos, mostram que os sujeitos entrevistados destacam a comunicação como fundamental para promover a saúde dos homens no Brasil e também em Quebec. Porém, chega-se à conclusão de que a realidade não encontra correspondência entre os discursos e a prática, sendo a comunicação relegada a segundo plano e empreendida sem bases teóricas ou métodos de planejamento em comunicação em saúde.
This is a qualitative study resulting from research on the correlation of three key public health topics: health promotion, men’s health, and health communication. Based on the premise that the men’s health is the result of a series of questions of socio-cultural orders, it was considered that the communication is central element to promote the health of the mentioned public. Thus, from the literature, the analysis of secondary data and interviews with strategic agents from Brazil and the province of Quebec, Canada, it has been analyzed if the communication occupies a prominent place in the formulation of strategies for men’s health. The study incorporates several methodological elements, such as case studies, Gadamer's Hermeneutic-Dialectic, in-depth interviews, collective subject discourse analysis, and literature reviews. All of them were guided by the comparative studies that lead to the mother research to which this work is linked. The results, presented in a set of four scientific articles, show that the agents interviewed highlight communication as fundamental to promote men’s health in Brazil and also in Quebec. However, it is concluded that the reality does not match the discourses and the practice, being the communication relegated to the background and undertaken without theoretical bases or methods of planning in health communication.

O presente trabalho busca compreender as estratégias utilizadas por viúvas para sobreviver em uma sociedade de Antigo Regime no sul da América portuguesa. Para tanto, por meio das trajetórias de quatro moradoras das freguesias de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Viamão e Nossa Senhora dos Anjos na segunda metade do século XVIII, procuramos entender as estratégias utilizadas para se conseguir um segundo matrimônio e os fatores que nele influenciavam como o número de filhos dependentes, a idade e os bens possuídos ao enviuvar. Além disso, investigamos a participação dessas mulheres na economia e na circulação de riquezas dentro de suas freguesias. Por fim, analisamos as redes de relações estabelecidas por essas viúvas por meio do compadrio.
This work seeks to understand the strategies used by widows to survive in an Ancien Régime society in the South of Portuguese America. To this end, through the lives of four residents of the parishes of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Viamão and Nossa Senhora dos Anjos in the second half of the eighteenth century, we aim to understand the strategies used to achieve a second marriage and the factors that influenced in it as the number of dependent children, widow´s age and the property owned by her when she becomes a widow. Furthermore, we investigated the involvement of these women in the economy and circulation of wealth within their parishes. Finally, we analyze the relations established by these widows through compadrazgo.

This thesis offers new models for participatory and performative interventions in sites of heritage tourism through a theorized practical engagement. Drawing on both Tourism Studies and Performance Studies, the primary aim of these interventions is to reveal and provoke ways of seeing and using these sites as places of multiple meanings rather than as ones constricted and bounded by normative heritage narratives in their production and management. The experimental phase of the project discussed in the thesis includes three contrasting case studies: GeoQuest, Sardine Street, and Water Walk. These are each analysed and evaluated through my development of a ‘mythogeographic’ framework that includes the performative techniques of layering, rhizomatic interweaving, the making of 'anywheres' and the self-mythologising of the activist. The thesis charts a trajectory through praxis, from developing models for ambulatory, signage-based and ‘mis-guided’ interventions to be undertaken by performance ‘specialists’, towards a dispersal of their tactics for use by heritage tourists in general. It thus describes a related change in the balance of the research methodology from ethnographic participant observation towards practice-as-research (PaR), the latter of which both generated and enacted knowledge and understanding. This PaR took the form of various visits and forays to and across heritage sites and landscape, and also the production of a ‘toolkit’ of handbook, pocketbook, website and online short films for the dispersal of tactics and a strategy that is eventually called ‘counter-tourism’. The thesis thus includes the publications A Sardine Street box of tricks, Counter-tourism: the handbook, Counter-tourism: a pocketbook and the DVD, Tactics for counter-tourism, as well as their fully theorized critical contextualisation. These represent a PaR enquiry that attempts to creatively express my research findings from productions made in the field through a popular form of writing and presentation that is capable of inspiring general, ‘non-specialist’ tourists to make their own performance interventions in heritage sites.

In this essay I refer Eilis Ni Dhuibhne’s narrative construction of the main characters and the theme of the novel The Dancers Dancing, in the context of the anthropologist Victor Turner’s concept of liminality. Thus the summer in the Gaeltacht that five teenage girls experience, can be understood as a depiction of the liminal phase in a rite of passage. Ni Dhuibhne’s differently constructed characters enlighten different aspects of liminality and through the céilí dance their experiences are exposed. Furthermore this essay suggests that Julia Kristeva’s notion of the chora, which can be associated to dance, is also relevant when describing the unbounded and unlimited process that radically can reform social structures. I conclude that the liminal space offers an area of many possibilities. It functions as a free zone where the main characters can freely explore their personal issues that trouble them, or the difficulties of their own society.

Current debates on space reveal a dichotomy between two apparently conflicting understandings of space: on the one hand, space is understood as a physical, tangible entity that has an impact on how we perceive, feel and emotionally inhabit the world, and on the other hand, space is conceived as an abstract entity, suggesting that space has no active role (a productivity) within everyday life, being solely a conceptual product of intellectual reasoning. As a result, the commonly used word: ‘space’, will be discussed as an ontologically paradoxical, ambiguous and elusive concept; a concept that cannot be captured within a single definition. This thesis consequently researches the ontology of space by informing a framework that embraces the complexity of space as an ambiguous and unrepresentable entity. It aims to reconcile the multiple understandings of space, liberating it from the binary thinking that opposes the abstract to the physical, disclosing its potential productivity. This thesis thus proposes a methodology departing from a transdisciplinary approach that addresses the variability, multiplicity, paradoxicality and ambiguity of space through a ‘bastard’ epistemology that defies binary logic by considering what falls out of order and norm. To research an ontology through a bastard epistemology is to work outside of (but in combination with) the intelligible and sensible realms, through a framework that is non-representational, but instead enactive and performative, driven by experience, affect and aesthetics; thus allowing access to an entity that is both ambiguous and also unrepresentable. In doing so, this thesis argues that space is diversely implicated in the constitution of research methodologies through its interactions with order and structures, as well as agential in the constitution of understandings of human interactions with the world; and therefore, it will be argued, space has methodological purchase. The consequence of this methodological purchase is that space can reveal itself if a research strategy is implemented that works through the multiple dimensions of space. Within this context the diagram will be introduced as a productive path because enables a bastard epistemology to work through the multiplicity of space, since the diagram, is a performed, materialised outcome of multiple experiences of the making of order through the interaction between physical and conceptual dimensions. In synthesis, the diagram is used to recursively research an ontology of space, showing the main contribution of this thesis: of how without negating its complexity and multiplicity, space can be useful, constructive and productive within contemporary contexts of research methodologies.

Cette thèse s'adresse à un domaine de recherche nommé "architecture et philosophie". La spécificité de ce domaine s'inscrit dans la question d'une coordination possible entre ces deux disciplines. Afin de mieux comprendre ce à quoi tient ce "et", nous proposons de revenir sur un épisode singulier de son histoire: la rencontre entre la déconstruction derridienne et la culture architecturale anglo-américaine de la seconde moitié du 20e siècle. Trois parties composent la restitution de cette recherche. Premièrement, il s'agit d'étudier comment se raconte cette rencontre depuis différentes situations d'énonciation (anglo-américaine et francophone), afin de mettre en avant comment des réceptions et appropriations culturelles variées conditionnent des poursuites théoriques spécifiques. D'un milieu à l'autre, entre les versions d'une même histoire, il y a de l'écart. L'objet principal de la thèse est alors d'investir l'écart entre ces versions par la mise en traduction de certaines traces de son histoire (Wigley 1993; Kipnis 1997). La seconde partie propose d'expérimenter comment traduire aujourd'hui en français ce qu'ont produit les Derridean years de l'architecture. Enfin, il s'agit de reconsidérer l'héritage de cette rencontre comme un problème à construire, en vue de remettre en jeu l'histoire longue et oscillante de l'hospitalité des discours de l'architecture. Cette thèse est une focale construite sur un épisode de l'histoire récente. This thesis addresses a field of research named "architecture and philosophy". The specificity of this field is related to the question of a possible coordination between these two disciplines. In order to better understand what this "and" holds, we propose to return to a singular episode in its history: the encounter between the Derridean deconstruction and the Anglo-American architectural culture of the second half of the 20th century. The restitution of this research is composed of three parts. First, we study how this encounter is recounted trough different institutional and intellectual contexts (Anglo-American and French speaking contexts), in order to highlight how various cultural receptions and appropriations condition specific theoretical pursuits. From one context to another, between versions of a same story, there is a gap. The main purpose of the thesis is to invest such a gap between these versions by putting in translation some traces of its history (Wigley 1993, Kipnis 1997). The second part proposes to experiment how to translate today into French what the Derridean years of architecture produced. Finally, it is a question of reconsidering the inheritance of this encounter as a problem to build, in order to put into play the long and oscillating history of the hospitality of architectural discourses. This thesis is a focal point built on an episode of recent history. By proposing to experiment with new modes of recounting, we support the hypothesis that these specific modes make it possible to transform

This dissertation explores the nature of the Australian Choral Conductor. Through survey, interview and case study, the research aimed to reveal the attributes of the Australian Choral Conductor, particularly in relation to the skills and experiences that contribute to a conductor becoming an expert. The Australian Choral Conductor, it could be argued, is under valued and little understood. There are very few opportunities for Australian experts to remain as full time choral conductors within their own country. In some cases Australian conductors have moved overseas to take up choral conducting positions, and in the process have gained international recognition. This research investigated if there was a particular pathway to becoming a choral conductor, and if there were opportunities to remain as such within Australia. The research arose out of three defining moments in Australian choral music. These were the 1998 National Strategic Plan for Choral Development; and the 1998 ANCA survey research entitled ‘So you want to be a choral conductor?’ and the 1996 World Symposium of Choral Music in Sydney. Using a longitudinal frame, the research focussed on examining the cases of five eminent Australian musicians, probing areas of a conductor’s passion and reasons for becoming a choral conductor. The research also investigated the ways in which choral conductors’ training, knowledge and experience influenced their choice of repertoire and, in turn, their performance standard and level of expertise. The research examined whether there was a consistent way of determining how conductors’ choral practice is developed. The study went on to investigate why Australian conductors did not receive wider recognition as experts within the choral community, or within Australia in general.

The concept of choral music as defined by the Western world was foreign to Arab cultures until the colonization of the Arab world began in the seventeenth century when we began to see the Western choral style emerging in the churches of the Arab world. Group singing of traditional music was done in unison or heterophonic textures. Notated part-singing is a product of colonization, Westernization, Christianization, and now globalization. In recent years, singing music in mixed or multiple voicings not of a heterophonic nature has spread beyond the churches to the secular Arab world. As choral singing has increased in the Arab world, a new genre of Arabic choral music has emerged. In order for Western conductors to effectively teach, conduct, or perform these new works, it is important for them to develop a basic understanding of traditional Arabic musical styles and pronunciation of the language, thereby making Arabic choral music more accessible and enabling it to become a part of the larger world’s musical vocabulary. This study serves as an introductory resource for non-Arab choral conductors concerning key elements related to performing Arabic choral music and provides a context for how these elements relate to this evolving choral genre. In addition, through interviews with composers and conductors of Arabic choral music, this project will further inform the reader regarding the performance of this genre.

This report is for the beginning choral music educator or music education student who seeks guidance when selecting repertoire for their advanced elementary or beginning middle school choir. I attended the 2011 Kansas Choral Directors Association conference. Conferences such as these are great resources for the novice choral educator and even the veteran teacher. Choral reading sessions are excellent ways to find new and quality repertoire, because the directors that select the music spend a good amount of time researching and selecting songs. In determining what factors directors use to choose repertoire for their choirs, a survey was developed and administered to forty Kansas music educators at one of the reading sessions which asked the following three questions: 1) What is the likelihood that you would use this song in a concert or program? The next two are questions in which I asked (these two were based on a ‘disagree or agree’ scale): ‘This song has good educational value for the students’ and ‘I can teach many elements of music within this song.’ Evidence is shown from other master educators of various levels that choosing appropriate, worthy, and challenging repertoire is crucial to the success of the choral program.

The purpose of this study was to examine the continuum of choral singing from secondary choral organizations to choral organizations at selected higher education institutions in Indiana. Examined were two large state institutions and two private, liberal arts colleges. Two groups of college students who had high school choral experience were surveyed: 1. non-participants, and 2. participants. Participants in choral ensembles made up 1.33% of the total enrollments of the institutions studied. Thirty four percent of the selected students had high school choral experience. Choral ensemble participants' responses to a questionnaire were compared with non-participants' responses. The state institutions' student responses were compared to the liberal arts institutions' student responses.There do not appear to be universal reasons for students to continue or not continue singing in choral ensembles. The reasons appear to vary with the individual student and institution. However, there were trends observed. Students perceived themselves as being well enough prepared to participate in higher education choral ensembles. There is a discrepancy between the expectations of the college conductors and the students' evaluation of their preparedness. Literature appears to be a highly significant factor in the interest of all respondents. Students preferred to sing all types of music. Neither participants nor non-participants reported that classical literature was the focus of their high school choral programs. Participants perceive that the university is interested in them, while non-participants reported negative responses. Private respondents felt that the university was interested in their participation in choral ensembles more than public respondents. Many students decide before arriving on the higher education campus whether or not they will participate in college choral ensembles. The amount of credit given for singing in ensembles or academic loads seem to be a minor factor. It appears that parents do influence choral participation.Private institutions have a larger percentage of their populations participating in choral ensembles than do public institutions. The higher involvement of liberal arts college students in choral ensembles may be explained by the department's need for adequate manpower and the personalized recruiting policies. The personality of the conductor was important to the students surveyed.

A presente pesquisa analisou diferentes gravações da peça Nosso Choro de Garoto, com o objetivo de levantar aspectos interpretativos semelhantes entre os intérpretes. A metodologia empregada contempla a escolha das gravações, dos tópicos de análise e as ferramentas para realizar a mesma. As gravações utilizadas foram realizadas por violonistas da tradição do choro, que na maioria dos casos conheceram e conviveram com o autor da peça. Os tópicos analisados nas gravações são: localização e utilização do rubato, articulação e acentuação da figura rítmica semicolcheia – colcheia – semicolcheia, articulação dos baixos, e a utilização de arpejos. Foi realizada uma análise formal da peça, com o intuito de organizar melhor a coleta de dados. A análise de ditas gravações foi feita por meio de softwares especializados para tais fins. As análises revelam aspectos interpretativos semelhantes entre os intérpretes, os quais consideramos como pertencentes ao estilo interpretativo de um gênero musical.
The present research analyzed different recordings of Nosso Choro by Garoto, with the aim of bringing up common interpretive aspects between performers. The methodology includes the choice of the recordings, of the topics of analysis and of the tools to accomplish the same. The recordings were performed by guitarists who belong to the tradition of Choro, who in most cases met the composer. The topics analyzed in the recordings are: location and use of rubato, articulation and accentuation of the rhythmic sixteenth note – eight note – sixteenth note, articulation of the bass line, and the use of arpeggios. A formal analyses of the piece was made with the aim of better organizing the data collected. The analysis of this recording was made through use of specialized software for such purposes. The analyzes reveal similar interpretive aspects between performers, which we consider as belonging to an interpretative style of a musical genre.

The psychological research on music and emotion supports how the two concepts have always been intertwined. The most common line of research in this field is related to the commonly experienced phenomenon that major chords sound happy while minor chords sound sad. This proposed study takes a specific extended major chord (the Vadd11 chord) and tests whether the V chord with a color note, an added 11, has a significantly different emotional impact on listeners as compared to a V chord without an 11. The chord will be played within a I-V-I progression so that the Vadd11 chord is given musical context. Participants are asked to rate the how emotional the progression is and to indicate their preference between the two chords. Both piano and strings timbres will be tested. The chord progression change is hypothesized to cause a significantly increased emotional impact. Multiple confounding variables will be examined within the study (specifically cultural musical background, or what culture’s music participants listened to in their upbringing, and musical sophistication, or how musically adept participants are). Neither of these variables nor the timbre are anticipated to affect the changes in emotional reaction.

The way humans listen to music and perceive its structure isautomatic. In an attempt by Friberg et al. (2011) to model thishuman perception mechanism, a set of nine perceptual features wasselected to describe the overall properties of music. By letting atest group rate the perceptual features in a data set of musicalpieces, they discovered that the factor with most importance fordescribing the emotions happy and sad was the perceptual featuremodality. Modality in music denotes whether the key of a musicalpiece is in major or minor.This thesis aims to predict the modality in a continuous scale (0-10) from chord analysis with multiple linear regression and a NeuralNetwork (NN) in a computational model using a custom set offeatures. The model was able to predict the modality with anexplained variability of 64 % using a NN. The results clearlyindicated that the approach of using chords as features to predictmodality, is appropriate for music data sets that consisted of tonalmusic.

The ‘authority’ of the chorus in Greek tragedy has been a matter of discussion for a very long time. The word authority, however, has two distinct meanings: it can refer to the status of the chorus within the dramatic world and to the truthfulness or reliability of the choral discourse. To avoid this confusion, I use the term authoritativeness in this thesis to indicate the extent to which we can trust what the chorus are saying, chanting, or singing. In chapter 1, I establish a number of textual and linguistic markers which suggest whether a choral discourse can potentially be regarded as authoritative. One important factor is identifying where the chorus operate as a stage figure and where qua chorus. The subsequent chapters are taken up by case studies in which I closely analyse the language and context of the chorus’s utterances in three of Sophocles’ seven extant tragedies. I have chosen the Philoctetes, the Antigone, and the Electra because, in each, the chorus is used in a different way. Altogether, my analysis shows how Sophocles constantly experiments with the use of the choral voice: some markers raise the expectations that choral comments and judgements can be taken as a reliable guide for an interpretation of the action. At the same time, however, different devices undermine this potential authoritativeness, making the precise meaning of the discourse ambiguous or multivalent and contributing to the continuing disagreements on the precise interpretation of the tragedies.

The purpose of this study was to (a) examine influences on choral music adjudicators’ rating decisions of choral performance quality and (b) to see if differences existed among those influences by participants’ years of adjudication experience and academic training (degree focus). Part One of the study included eight randomly selected participants (N = 8), comprised of choral adjudication experts, to aid in the construction of the data collection instrument. Part Two of the study included a convenience sample (N = 71) comprised of choral music performance adjudicators within the southeastern United States.

For the primary purpose, the Choral Adjudicator Preference Scale (CAPS), a researcher-constructed data-gathering instrument, was developed to determine influences on choral adjudicators’ rating decisions of choral performance. A Cronbach’s Coefficient Alpha measure of internal consistency was calculated to establish reliability of the CAPS data collection instrument. A coefficient of .934 was found for the CAPS, which indicated a high level of internal consistency. Validity for the data-gathering instrument was established through three sources, (a) an open-ended questionnaire sent to the eight choral adjudicators, (b) a thorough review of the related literature and (c) verification by choral activities chairpersons among the southeastern states. For research question one (What factors influence adjudicators’ decisions when adjudicating choirs?) a principal component analysis revealed 23 items that coalesced among four factors of influence: (a) the ensemble’s performance, (b) visual aspects, (c) extra-musical aspects, and (d) the conductor’s contributions. These four factors accounted for 61.49 percent of the total variance in participants’ responses.

For the secondary purpose, a two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was calculated to determine if differences existed among factors of influence by participants’ years of adjudication experience and academic training (degree focus). For research question two (Do differences exist among adjudicators’ influences on rating decisions by years of adjudication experience?) a significant main effect was found for the factors, F (3, 189) = 216.581, p = .000, η2 = .775; however, there was no main effect for years of adjudication experience, nor an interaction effect among the factors and years of adjudication experience. For research question three (Do differences exist among adjudicators’ influences on rating decisions by academic training?) a significant main effect was found for the factors, F (3, 201) = 195.326, p = .000, η2 = .745; however, there was no main effect for academic training, nor an interaction effect among the factors and academic training.

A discussion of the influences on choral adjudicators’ rating decisions was presented. Recommendations for future research were suggested regarding music performance adjudication, influences on rating decisions, and characteristics of evaluators.
