Streszczenie:
Chromonic liquid crystals have recently received a lot of attention due to their spontaneous self-assembly in supramolecular columnar structures that, depending on their concentration in water, align to form a nematic liquid crystalline phase. The chirality may be induced in chromonics by adding chiral moieties to the nematic phase or enhanced by confining them in curved geometrical constraints. This review summarizes the recent research developments on chiral chromonic liquid crystals confined in spherical geometry, relating the results to what was observed for thermotropic liquid crystals in the same conditions. The review focuses on the studies carried out on commercially available nematic chromonics, investigating the effects on their topologies in different anchoring conditions and different chiral dopants and suggesting an application in the sensor field.

AbstractEquilibrium geometries and electronic structures of complexes between β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and some small molecules as well as monosaccharides were investigated by Austin Model 1 (AM1) to obtain binding energy of the complexes. It was indicated that β-CD could bind the structurally similar solvent molecules and monosaccharides because of the negative binding energy of the complexes, and especially could show the chiral binding ability to monosaccharides with more hydroxyl groups, due to its chiral characteristics. The complexes were stabilized by the hydrogen bonding between β-CD and guests. Based on the AM1 optimized geometries, the IR spectra were calculated by AM1 method. Vibration frequencies of O-H bonds in the guests were red-shifted owing to the weakening of the O-H bonds with the formation of the complexes.

Streszczenie:
Living systems have chiral molecules, e.g., native proteins that almost entirely contain L-amino acids. How protein homochirality emerged from a background of equal numbers of L and D amino acids is among many questions about life’s origin. The origin of homochirality and its implications are explored in computer simulations examining the stability and structural and functional properties of an artificial library of compact proteins containing 1:1 (termed demi-chiral), 3:1, and 1:3 ratios of D:L and purely L or D amino acids generated without functional selection. Demi-chiral proteins have shorter secondary structures and fewer internal hydrogen bonds and are less stable than homochiral proteins. Selection for hydrogen bonding yields a preponderance of L or D amino acids. Demi-chiral proteins have native global folds, including similarity to early ribosomal proteins, similar small molecule ligand binding pocket geometries, and many constellations of L-chiral amino acids with a 1.0-Å RMSD to native enzyme active sites. For a representative subset containing 550 active site geometries matching 457 (2) 4-digit (3-digit) enzyme classification (E.C.) numbers, native active site amino acids were generated at random for 472 of 550 cases. This increases to 548 of 550 cases when similar residues are allowed. The most frequently generated sequences correspond to ancient enzymatic functions, e.g., glycolysis, replication, and nucleotide biosynthesis. Surprisingly, even without selection, demi-chiral proteins possess the requisite marginal biochemical function and structure of modern proteins, but were thermodynamically less stable. If demi-chiral proteins were present, they could engage in early metabolism, which created the feedback loop for transcription and cell formation.

Abstract We show that in theories of gravitation based on affine geometries the torsion field, that takes a dynamical character, not only the chiral magnetic effect (CME) intervenes in the wash up of the chiral anomaly but also the chiral vortical effect (CVE) and the coupled chiral effect (CCE) coming from the hypermagnetic field interaction with the primordial plasma are crucial in a realistic physical scenario, as in the case of the early universe. We also show that the equation governing the wash up takes the form given in this paper, supplemented with the dynamical equation for the torsion vector containing the helicities and other axial couplings. The role played by the neutrinos in the interaction with the axion field in this theoretical framework is briefly discussed.

Streszczenie:
Chiral boson theory is introduced and its relevance to the quantum Hall effect is explained. It is shown that the chiral boson theory admits mode expansions which are essentially those which appear and are made use of in bosonic string theories. This immediately leads to a way of quantizing the theory. Restrictions on various parameters appearing in the model can be imposed in a natural way. Finally, it is suggested that some of these ideas have important applications to other geometries which could give rise to new types of physical behavior.

Light-matter interactions at the nanoscale have been widely studied over the past few decades. In particular, the interaction of light with asymmetric nanostructures has harbored the interests of chemists, biologists and physicists alike. The world around us is largely constituted of asymmetric structures such as DNA, sugars, amino-acids, proteins, enzymes which form the backbone of every living matter. Structures which cannot be superimposed on their mirror images are termed as chiral structures. Naturally occurring chiral objects display unique optical properties such as Circular Dichroism (CD) and Optical Rotation, although these effects are typically very weak and occur in the UV. In recent years, researchers have focused in designing artificial chiral substrates with large chiral response in the visible, which are orders of magnitude stronger than the naturally chiral objects. These engineered systems are suitable for a wide range of applications such as broadband circular polarizers, chiral molecule detection and negative refractive index media. The design scheme for chiro-plasmonic systems relied on the assembling plasmonic achiral nanostructures in chiral geometries or fabricating plasmonic materials of chiral geometries. In the work presented in this thesis, we present a detailed theoretical and experimental investigation of plasmonic effects in different two and three dimensional chiral systems. One of the design schemes proposed in this work consists of vertical stacking of oppositely handed 2D chiral structures. Owing to the strong plasmon coupling between the individual nanostructures, there was a significant enhancement in the calculated CD values as opposed to the isolated planar components. Varying the separation and the relative orientation of the layers rendered the optical response tunable in the visible. The other strategy proposed here was placing an achiral plasmonic NP in chiral hotspot of the chiral plasmonic structures. The results from the numerical simulations suggest the interaction between a chiral and achiral NP at close proximity could be a way for enhancing the chiral response in the visible. This is to our knowledge, the first observation of a chiral-achiral metallic plasmonic interaction. Three dimensional chiral structures such as metallic helices or NPs around DNA helix were found to exhibit strong CD effects in the visible. A major focus of this thesis work was the development of wafer-scale, three dimensional metal-decorated helical substrates with one of the largest reported optical responses in the visible. Additionally we investigated theoretically and experimentally the effect of plasmon coupling between the metal helices on the resultant CD and asymmetry factor. The effect of inter-particle separation was found to have a near-exponential dependence on the magnitude of the CD response. On the other hand, changing the refractive index of the dielectric template altered the chiral responses drastically. Finally we investigated a novel geometry of chiral nanoshells consisting of a dielectric helical core with a conformal coating of a metallic shell. The spherical nanoshells have been extensively studied for its distinct plasmonic response and have been utilized for drug-delivery and optical sensing applications. Chiral nanoshells are fundamentally different because of the asymmetric nature of the nanoshell. Moreover the shell is made of alternate plasmonic material-Titanium Nitride which is optically similar to Gold but more robust and chemically stable in comparison. The resulting optical response of the chiral shell geometry was the broadest CD curve we observed until now, covering the whole of visible to near infra-red regime, implying this geometry to be a promising candidate for broadband circular polarizer applications. All the studies carried out in this thesis, gives us an outlook on the possible design scheme and the underlying physics that could help us in engineering the chiral response based on the desired operating range of wavelength.

Three-dimensional images of five-carbon sugar molecules and single-stranded nucleic acid molecules (DNA and RNA) were obtained. The geometrical cause of the formation of different form by molecules nucleic acids (right and left spirals with different number of D-ribose and ribose molecules in the period, including closed chains) has been determined. Substituting the known effective values of the lengths of chemical bonds (carbon-carbon, oxygen-oxygen, phosphorus-oxygen) into the structure of polytopes, the values of the characteristic geometric parameters of molecules nucleic acids were calculated: their effective diameter and period. It turned out that the calculated values of these parameters are in good agreement with their values, determined earlier experimentally. It is shown that the set of single-stranded nucleic acids (both DNA and RNA) is broken into two sets of chiral forms. Each form in one set contains a chiral form in another set. Moreover, in each set there are possible rotation of the spirals both in the right and in the left direction.

Streszczenie:
Auxetic materials with negative Poisson’s ratio have recently attracted the interest of the scientific community. This is because these materials have the potential to deliver specific functions thanks to a discretization of their constitutive matter that is intended as an aggregation of macro-scaled cellular structures characterized by specific geometries. Many auxetic structures with different geometries and auxetic response have been proposed. Downscaling the cellular structures (e.g. microscale) has the potential to improve the overall auxetic properties of the material, yet there is not enough research on the behavior of these structures at the microscale. This paper studies the auxetic behavior of a modified hexachiral structure formed by microscale elements. First an optimization study was performed to define the most appropriate geometrical dimensions. Then the auxeticity of the proposed cell was assessed carefully introducing a new Coefficient of Auxeticity which allowed to capture complex mechanical responses (e.g. including cellular rotations) as those faced with the proposed design. The proposed miniaturized design shows an outstanding stable auxetic response up to 20% strain of the micro-cell. It is believed that this study has the potential to pave the way to a new class of auxetic materials.

Chiral honeycombs are auxetic cellular structures that exhibits negative Poison’s ratio. Chiral honeycombs are structures arranged in an array of cylinders connected by ligaments. Four different configurations of these geometries with 4- and 6- ligaments attached are investigated for its use in shear layer of non-pneumatic wheel. The objective of the study is to find an ideal geometry for the shear layer while meeting its requirements of shear properties (about 6.5 MPa effective shear modulus and 0.15 maximum effective shear strain) with polycarbonate as base material. Finite Element (FE) based numerical tests are carried out and optimum chiral meso-structures are found for the target shear properties. Parametric studies on geometries are also conducted to find the effect of geometries on the target properties. The effect of cell wall thickness is studied and the optimum thickness is suggested to meet the target requirements. Effect of direction of shear loading has been studied on each different configuration in order to minimize the effect of direction of loading.

Abstract. Architected materials possess extraordinary mechanical properties, that cannot be met by natural materials, either in the static and in the dynamic range. For this reason, the study of metamaterials is a very active field of research. Although lattice architectures are commonly preferred, especially for the relative simplicity of manufacturing, geometries based on thin shells may present considerable advantages. Indeed it has been shown that shell metamaterials, still preserving lightness and versatility, can present excellent stiffness and strength properties, and ability to absorb strain energy by means of very large deformations, that make them useful for the design of shock absorbing elements. In the contribution will be examined a class of shell metamaterials, composed of triple periodic minimal surfaces TPMS, that having zero mean curvature can be in equilibrium with an isotropic state of stress. Two particular surfaces, the Schwarz P and the Schwarz G minimal surfaces, the first centro-symmetric, the second chiral, are examined.
