Kazakhstan experienced large population in- and outmigration during the first decade after independence. In particular, increased Chinese migration and presence in the country proved to be a focal point for debate for the Kazakhstani public, a fact reflected by the obsessive coverage in the local media. The theory of securitization of security threats is employed to examine the effects of Chinese presence in Kazakhstan and to dissect the varying perceptions of this phenomenon on the state and societal levels. Therefore, the media’s pioneering of the securitization of Chinese migration and the government’s response to it is analyzed in this paper. This paper concludes that though Chinese migration to Kazakhstan constitutes no real security threat to Kazakhstan, however Chinese presence and Chinese migration in Kazakhstan need further research.

Recent years have witnessed the large number of Chinese immigrants in Canada. However, talk about the return migration of Chinese immigrants is circulating within the Canada's Chinese communities, especially among Chinese immigrants who have obtained Canadian academic credentials. This inquiry explores ten Chinese immigrants' perceptions about their immigration and living experiences in Canada. My goal is to understand, from a social-cultural-historical context, the phenomenon of Chinese-Canadian return migration among recent Chinese immigrants in Canada. The theoretical framework is derived primarily from Bourdieu's capital theory and his critical approach to the concept of habitus . Drawing on an interpretative, qualitative approach, I examine social, cultural, historical forces that influence the ways these Chinese immigrants perceive, negotiate and reposition themselves in facing various challenges and struggles. Traditionally, research on return migration of Chinese immigrants in Canada has focused on the economic and social integration of immigrants in the host country. I argue that "Chinese cultural habitus", such as the profound influence of Confucianism and Taoism that Chinese immigrants inherited, played critical roles in their actions, attitudes and decision-making about their return migration. I collected the participants' narratives for a one and half year period from August 2006 to March 2008 primarily through open-ended interviews, and various documentation such as field notes, reflexive notes and Canadian Statistics. Analyses of the data suggest that the unrecognized foreign credentials and the limited social capital of Chinese immigrants are the primary factors that disadvantage their social mobility. Chinese cultural values and beliefs have great impact on Chinese immigrants' perceptions and behaviors during their journey of crossing different social spaces, assuming different positionings and negotiating among their multiple identities.

This thesis focuses on Western-born second generation overseas Chinese who "return" migrate to China, their ancestral homeland. Inscribed within the larger social processes and dynamics of Chinese contemporary society, this research aims to understand how their "homecoming" and socio-cultural integration experiences in the parental homeland's society leads to the re-evaluation of their ethno-cultural identity(ies) and ethno-national attachments. My research uses a qualitatively-driven multimethod design. Data collection primarily consisted of semi-structured in-depth interviews with 58 ethnic remigrants in Beijing and Shanghai, as well as a variety of document analyses. Guided by the concept of social anchoring, this study thus sheds light on the role of ethnicity in channeling migration and in restructuring the remigrants' identities in their ancestral country. By examining how this group of highly-skilled migrants' definitions of self and home evolve along with their transition from being a racial minority in their birth country to a cultural minority in their ethnic homeland, this thesis uncovers the multi-layered experiences of socio-cultural integration (and lack thereof) that trigger unexpected identity questioning, as evidenced by remigrants' social networks and every day interactions in the homeland. By exploring their integration experiences and overall migration journey, I find that many are in fact paradoxically integrated in China, causing them to experience various forms of emotional in-betweenness and double disconnection challenging the boundaries of their ethno-cultural identities.

In dieser ethnographisch-soziologischen Fallstudie wird die Geschichte der chinesischen Immigration in Bukarest nach 1990 in ihrer Besonderheit und ihren allgemeinen Strukturen nachvollzogen. Dies geschieht durch eine Doppelperspektive auf den Fall: Die Rekonstruktion der diskursiven (Re-)Präsentation des Falles als methodisch-analytische Vorstufe wurde einer anschließenden historischen Rekon-struktion der erlebten Geschichte der Migranten vorangestellt. Die anschließende Kontrastierung der Ergebnisse aus beiden Analyseschritten diente der Heraus-arbeitung vorher noch nicht sichtbarer Interdependenzen und Bezüge zwischen diesen beiden Ebenen. Mit anderen Worten: Die diskursive Ebene und die historische bzw. erlebte Ebene bilden gemeinsam und in Verschränkung miteinander die konstitutive/n Struktur/en des Falles: Erstens geht es um die Besonderheit der Post-1989-Migration von China nach Rumänien im Kontext von Transformationen. So ist für die Struktur und den Verlauf des Falles bestimmend, dass sich mehrere Wandlungsprozesse sowohl im Herkunfts- als auch im Einwanderungskontext zugleich ereigneten. Dazu gehören die Globalisierung allgemein sowie die als Transformationen bezeichneten Prozesse in China seit 1978 und in Rumänien seit 1989. Auf nationaler, lokaler Ebene sowie auf der Ebene der alltäglichen sozialen Wirklichkeit der Stadtbevölkerung und der Immigranten in Bukarest war zu beobachten, dass diese mit rapiden Veränderungen konfrontiert waren und sind. So kamen zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre einige Pioniere mit Koffern voll China-Ware in Bukarest an und verkauften ihre Ware auf den unzähligen kleinen Straßenmärkten der Stadt. Im Jahr 2007 befindet sich auf einem großen Areal am Stadtrand von Bukarest ein Baukomplex aus acht großen Shopping-Malls. Chinesische UnternehmerInnen investieren nun in Großprojekte wie etwa der Telekommunikation in Rumänien. Neu ist auch die Rekrutierung von chinesischen Textilarbeiterinnen durch rumänische Unternehmer. Diese Entwicklung hängt mit dem gegenwärtigen Mangel an rumänischen Arbeitskräften aufgrund der Auswanderungs-wellen aus Rumänien zusammen. Charakteristisch ist jedoch, dass diese ge-sellschaftlich tiefgreifenden Änderungen, die nicht nur die hier genannten öko-nomischen, sondern auch politische und soziale Konsequenzen haben, in einem starken Kontrast dazu stehen, dass ihre soziale Wirklichkeit in der Forschung, der Politik und Öffentlichkeit unbeachtet und unbekannt blieb. Als zweites Themenfeld ist das Spannungsverhältnis von lokalen und globalen Prozessen für die Geschichte der Migranten zu nennen. Dabei sind die Bedeutung der „Verortung“ einerseits und die der Transnationalität andererseits strukturbildend für die Fallgeschichte. Dabei spielte die Auseinandersetzung mit dem wissenschaftlichen Transnationalismuskonzept eine besondere Rolle: Dieses behandelte ich als theo-retischen Diskurs, der zunächst kritisch betrachtet wurde. Die Frage, ob und wie die chinesische Community in Bukarest transnational lebt und was transnationale Lebens-formen sein könnten, wurde empirisch beantwortet. Drittens habe ich unter Bezugnahme auf das Konzept des sozialen Deutungsmusters aufgezeigt, dass Informalität als soziales Konstrukt auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen fallbestimmend ist. Informalisierungsprozesse sowie damit verbundene Illegalisierung und Kriminalisierung der Migranten in Europa bilden also ein weiteres Themenfeld der Fallstruktur. Schließlich stellt die gesellschaftliche Konstruktion kultureller Deutungsmuster über chinesische Migranten ein viertes zentrales Thema der Fallstruktur dar. Die chinesischen Migranten in Bukarest leben im Fadenkreuz unterschiedlicher Zuschreibungen. Im Herkunftsland werden sie als patriotische Kapitalisten, die Moder-nität ins Land bringen, gefeiert. In Europa werden sie der internationalen Welle ‚illegaler Migration‘ zugeordnet und auf Kriminelle und/oder Opfer reduziert. In Bukarest leben sie mit und in Konkurrenz der Bewertungen bzw. Abwertungen von Minderheitengruppen, wie etwa der Roma-Minderheit. Diese Bewertungen und Zuschreibungen haben mehrere Konsequenzen. Eine davon ist, dass chinesische Immigranten in Bukarest es gelernt haben, mit diesen aktiv umzugehen. So wurde deutlich, dass sich kulturelle Deutungsmuster nicht nur habituell verankern oder als biographisches Kapital gelebt werden, sondern situationsangemessen genutzt oder sogar teilsweise inszeniert werden, mit dem Ziel, einen Weg in die Gesellschaft zu finden und in dieser als Minderheitengruppe in eine respektierte Position zu gelangen.
Based on a case study on the new Chinese migrant network in Bucharest, this dissertation shed light onto this new migration pattern that has neither been investigated nor considered an important political matter in Europe. On the contrary, the issue of immigration has been consciously ignored by the Romanian public and was considered a ‘taboo’ for Romanian state agencies during the first half of the 1990s. Combining a variety of ethnographic methods, the following research-questions were addressed: Why and how are those immigrants ‘kept secret’? How are Chinese migrants regarded or represented in Europe and in the society of Bucharest? And what is the story behind these discourses? In this study, I reconstruct the historical development of the new Chinese migration wave to Eastern Europe, the immigration process during the early ‘wild’ years of transition in the 1990s and, finally, the rise and development of Chinese markets in Romania resulting in an urban project called ‘Chinatown of Bucharest.’ In particular, I intend to highlight with this the complexity of the immigrants’ network-building during this process, which implicates both their social embeddedness in the ‘transition-society’ as well as their transnational links to ‘homeland’.

This is a research on Chinese women’s marriage migration to South Korea. I explore this topic by adopting the perspective of politics of intimacy. It aims to find out how the broad political and economic transformations in China and South Korea structure this migration flow and how the operation of transnational matchmaking as a business shapes marriage relationship. In addition, how Chinese women negotiate their intimate life and adapt to Korean society. I highlight the issue of intimacy in Chinese women’s marriage migration. Capitalist development and the change of economic structure in China and South Korea generate potential migrants, and the gendered mobility structure shaped by South Korean immigration policies particularly favors women’s marriage migration. Transnational matchmaking, organized on market principles, provides a means for brides and grooms to know each other. However, it also contributes to generating a marriage relationship without emotional basis, which contradicts with the discourse of love. Economic political forces and the operation of matchmaking as a business shape it is particularly difficult for Chinese women to build up a marriage relationship structured around love and emotion. However, in a situation that love and emotion are considered as the basis of “modern” marriage, a relationship without it has to be dealt with. I thus discuss their negotiation of intimacy in both premarital and marital relationships. In premarital intimacy, the discourse of love is manipulated by marriage brokers on behalf of men in a way that entraps women. After marriage, as both parties only barely know each other, the version of companionship they negotiate is different from that in other marriages and is often manifested in the issues of money and reproduction. However, both money management and reproduction are sites of power struggle between men and women. Men tend to use money to control women, and they press women to bear a child. However, when women are not sure about the relationship, they are usually reluctant to do so. Despite that women possess certain emotional power; in general they are in a weak position. Thus, they use the weapons of the weak, secret, non-confrontational methods to deal with the reproductive pressure. I thus demonstrate that intimacy is not negotiated by women and men of equal standing, but existing gender conventions are played out in the process of negotiation. Overall, I argue that it is important to discuss the issue of intimacy in transnational marriage as this is a perspective to avoid conflating women’s marriage migration with labor migration and reveal the emotional and human aspect of their marriage and experience.

This thesis examines the role of the British merchant firm Jardine, Matheson & Co. (Jardine Matheson) in promoting and facilitating Chinese migration into and around the British Empire between 1833 and 1853. It argues that existing historiography on Chinese migration has focused too heavily on the late-nineteenth century and has paid insufficient attention to earlier experiments with Chinese labour. The case study of Jardine Matheson also emphasises the varied roles played by commercial organisations in the British Empire. Existing work has focused on the role of the firm’s partners either as opium traders or elite businessmen in colonial Hong Kong, with little analysis of their interest and involvement in Chinese migration. By examining Jardine Matheson’s archive of letters and accounts, official colonial correspondence, parliamentary papers, newspapers, books, journals and periodicals, the thesis will shed light on both the changing perceptions and uses of Chinese migrant labour in various imperial contexts from the 1830s to the 1850s. Chinese migration to different colonial destinations, including Singapore, Assam, New South Wales and Ceylon, will be examined comparatively. The colonial case studies examined in the thesis demonstrate how imperial experiments with Chinese labour in the mid nineteenth century were dependent on the resources and networks of Jardine Matheson on the China coast. The firm’s publishing network simultaneously circulated ideas about Chinese migrants that were reproduced across the British Empire. Additionally, Anglo-Chinese contact zones that developed over the 1830s and 1840s were crucial to the formation of stereotypes about a specifically Chinese ethnic character and systems of onward migration to global destinations. This thesis demonstrates the importance of Jardine Matheson – as well as connected Western commercial organisations and individuals – in facilitating Chinese migration and creating demand for Chinese labour during a period of rapid change in the British Empire.

With the increasing outflow of migrants from mainland China, many professional Chinese men have been coming to Britain for further education and employment. Their wives frequently give up their own jobs and come to the UK as following spouses, in order to assist their husbands with their educational and career advancement. Little research has been done on Chinese women overseas in general, and there are even fewer studies on Chinese trailing wives. The aim of my thesis is to apply feminist perspectives to interpret the migration experiences of these Chinese wives. Drawing upon interviews with 22 Chinese wives, I explore and interpret the data to reveal the importance of wifely duty during four different stages of their migration process: their deliberations about coming to Britain, their efforts to set up new homes, their financial and emotional support of their husbands and their becoming family dependants after their husbands’ careers are established in the UK. In analysing the interview material, I drew on Delphy and Leonard’s account of the marriage contract and the exploitation of women’s labour in the family. I argue that, as these women are followers in the migration process, they prioritised the interest of the family. By viewing this migration as a contract; they saw their investment in their husbands as a way to further the interests of the family as a whole. Their internalised traditional roles led to their achievement of self-realisation through the success of their husbands/family. These women’s ‘self-sacrifice’, in turn, bound them more tightly to their traditional roles in the family and to their subordinate status.

The ways in which individuals navigate the globe today complicates previous conceptualizations of migration and mobility. Once such mode of contemporary movement which challenges scholars is known as "birth tourism." This research considers birth tourism to be a form of "lifestyle migration," which I label aspirational migration. By analyzing the motivations which drive many parents to give birth abroad, I shed light on the complex and risky process, which involves a host of players, including family, friends, and a global birth tourism infrastructure. Through this drawn-out process, which begins well before the decision to give birth abroad and continues into the distant future, I argue that birth tourists and their foreign-born children become aspirational migrants and acquire cosmopolitan capital.

The thesis examines a new form of transnationalism increasingly visible since the early 21st century: the family migration of Chinese luoshang between mainland China and Canada. Luoshang is a popular Chinese term which describes a group of businessmen whose families have emigrated abroad taking with them fluid assets, whilst they themselves stay in mainland China to do business. The research aims to address the following questions: What are the characteristics of the Chinese luoshang, and what are the broader socio-economic change in China and Canada that luoshang’s transnationalism has reflected? In what ways is their transnational migration a household strategy, as well as a new lifestyle for the Chinese “new rich”, that is, the new middle class that have emerged through China’s recent development? How are their transnational familial and social lives practised, networks extended or constrained, and identity negotiated and renegotiated in these transnational social processes, spaces and dynamics across the Pacific? What are the consequences and implications of luoshang’s transnationalism for the family members involved? These research questions are tackled through applying combined theories of the new economics of migration, Bourdieu’s ideas of various “capitals”, and theories of transnationalism. Data was gathered through extensive multi-sited fieldwork in China and Canada by means of in-depth interviews and observations. The study finds that luoshang families’ transnational practices have led to a spreading of familial assets, a division of the site of production from that of consumption, a split of the family across the transnational social space, as well as a new lifestyle marked by broader choice and greater mobility beyond traditional national boundaries. It argues that although transnationalism is utilised by luoshang families as a flexible household and child-rearing arrangement to optimise perceived familial interests, geography and culture still matter in the everyday lives of transnational families. While stretching their social and kinship ties across the two continents and taking advantage of global opportunities, luoshang families have also faced huge dilemmas, ambiguities and unexpected risks. These include dislocations of identity and belonging, increases in social and relational distance, and exacerbation of gender and intergenerational inequalities and tensions. The thesis, as one of the first scholarly inquiries on the luoshang phenomenon, contributes to Chinese migration studies, shedding light on a new variation of Chinese transnational migration under dramatic socio-economic change both in China and globally. Additionally, uncovering the diversity and dynamics of Chinese luoshang families’ transnational experiences and linkages, the study enriches and broadens an understanding of an empirical transnationalism practised by global middle class trans-migrants.

A Paris comme à Milan, l’implantation des communautés catholiques d’origine chinoise, qui se sont développées tout au long du XXe siècle, a suivi le rythme des fluctuations de l’histoire migratoire du continent asiatique. Prenant la mesure de l’enjeu de l’accueil de ces nouveaux fidèles, les autorités ecclésiastiques françaises et italiennes ont mis en place un certain nombre de structures et de dispositifs particuliers. A travers une étude ethnographique comparative, cette thèse propose d’analyser la façon dont les institutions ecclésiastiques de chaque pays accompagnent la structuration de ces groupes de fidèles chinois. Au cours de ce travail de recherche, nous nous sommes intéressés notamment aux différents parcours de vie de ces croyants, ainsi qu’aux motivations à la base de leur foi catholique. Plus particulièrement, nous avons analysé la façon dont ces éléments influençaient leur pratique quotidienne du catholicisme. Chinese Catholic communities living in Paris and Milan developed throughout 20th century following Asian migration flows. Being aware of the challenge of welcoming these new believers, French and Italian church authorities implemented specific structures for Catholic migrants. Through a comparative ethnographic study, this thesis offers to analyze how ecclesiastical institutions in Italy and France follow the structuring of Chinese faithful groups. During this research, we focused on churchgoers’ life stories and motivations behind their Catholic faith. More specifically, we analyzed how all these elements influenced their daily practice of Catholicism. We also studied the role that these Catholic communities play in terms of keeping connections between Chinese migrants and their culture

"Floaters" are a large population of internal migrants in China. Led by a series of urban-based economic policies and the consequent income gap between rural and urban regions, these former peasants left their hometowns, floating temporarily and illegally in the cities for economic opportunities. Without legal immigration status, they are marginalized by local urbanites and are considered by the government as disobedient citizens with the potential to jeopardize the socialist society. This dissertation, drawing on two years' ethnographic and archival research in China, examines the basic characteristics of floaters' musical world and focuses on three representative musical components. The first is a repertory called Sour Songs, which originates from floaters' rural hometowns and serves as an outlet for release of nostalgia and spiritual pain. The second, Red Songs, is a genre invented by the communist government that has become an effective propaganda tool and is characterized as "a powerful bolt of the revolutionary machine" in the floaters' world. Finally, Rock 'n' Roll, the only musical form in China that signifies both urbanity and revolt, is used by floaters to display their special identity and to express themselves when they are silenced in the broader society. This dissertation reveals hidden meanings in floaters' music-making and suggests that the study of this overlooked musical community could provide new perspectives on Chinese music at large.

Through introduction of Fujian Province as home to the largest migrant population in the world, this article aims to address the negotiation of intersections between local and global forces that form new spaces throughout the diaspora. The "third space," a term coined by Homi Bhabha, addresses the fluid identity of Chinese-Filipino individuals that both acknowledges the traditional notions of "Chinese" while being influenced by a history of colonization in the Spanish Philippines. I incorporate my own personal experience as an American-born Chinese-Filipino navigating new spaces, and also the experience of my family members through interviews.

Since the late 1990s, the People’s Republic of China has emerged as the largest source of foreign students, tourists, skilled and low-skilled workers for the Pacific cities and regions. Upon arrival, the ‘new’ Chinese migrants have to carve out a place for themselves, which entails more than looking for jobs and shelter. In particular, they find themselves in a social milieu shaped by both new and long-established Chinese groups in the receiving places. Using migration flows between Mainland China and Vancouver as a case study, I explore specific processes and mechanisms that directly shape the diversity of migrant integration experiences and the variegated relations between migrant integration and the socioeconomic and spatial transformation of the Vancouver region. Specifically, I seek to understand how certain political economic characteristics of place (in terms of economic structures, political cultures, processes and institutions) have hindered and facilitated the livelihood production of migrant groups in multifaceted ways. Two methodological approaches inform my study: comparative historical analysis and agency-structure linkage. I argue that specific historical trajectory of urban development in localities in China and Vancouver offer very different structures of opportunities that enable individual migrant families to build different human capacity, hence, their capacity to adapt to a new life when they move from place to place. Group differences challenge the taken-for-granted claims of ‘Chineseness’ and the stale concept of ‘Chinese community’ in public debates and policy-making. By placing the multiplicity of Mainland Chinese experiences at the centre of my research, I have opened up new lines of theorizing about the substantive meaning of integration as opposed to providing definitive answers to when and how to achieve integration. The impossibility of presenting a coherent, unified trajectory through which one settles down with a definitive sense of belonging attests to the complexity and precariousness of migrant integration.

Throughout the Western world, governments have increasingly viewed migration through the lens of economic efficiency. In the era of globalisation, they argue, migrants should be selected on the basis of their skills and qualifications. Australian governments have been strongly committed to this policy direction, and over the last two decades, have reoriented the country�s migration program from the recruitment of unskilled labour to targeting educated professionals. The current Liberal-National Coalition government claims that this policy redirection has paid off, with migrants more skilled than ever, and successfully contributing to the economy. The government bases these claims on research conducted by scholars of migrant employment, who equate high levels of human capital with successful employment outcomes. Using the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Australia (LSIA), these researchers show that migrants with qualifications and English language ability have higher rates of labour force participation, lower unemployment, and higher occupational attainment and incomes, compared to their less skilled counterparts. This thesis critically analyses this �success story� narrative. It argues that the focus on human capital has overshadowed exploration of other important factors shaping migrants� employment experiences, including the gender and birthplace of new arrivals. This thesis shows that male and female migrants, and migrants from English versus non-English speaking backgrounds, can have very different experiences of working in Australia, regardless of their skills or occupational histories. I highlight the importance of these factors by investigating the experiences of Chinese women in Australia today. Using in-depth interviews with women from China and Hong Kong, and quantitative data from the Australian census and LSIA, I show that Chinese women�s employment experiences in Australia do not conform neatly to the prevailing �success story� promoted by the Government and migration researchers. Migration to Australia causes a widespread reduction in Chinese women�s paid work. While it is normal for men to seek work immediately after arrival, women find that migration intensifies their domestic workloads, while depriving them of sources of domestic support, such as relatives and hired help. Consequently, for Chinese women, migration often means moving from full-time to part-time jobs, or withdrawing from the workforce entirely. In the process, they experience a �feminisation� of roles, as they shift from being �career women� to fulfilling the traditional �female� roles of wife and mother. Thus migration and settlement are highly gendered, and the household context is crucial for understanding migrants� employment experiences. Among those women who are in the labour force, employment outcomes vary substantially by birthplace, pointing to the cultural specificity of human capital. Although both mainland Chinese and Hong Kong migrant women tend to be highly educated, mainland women achieve far poorer outcomes than Hong Kong women. Hong Kong women, with their relatively good English language skills and officially-recognised qualifications, are generally able to secure comparable jobs to those they had in Hong Kong, although they often have problems advancing further in Australia. Meanwhile, mainland women tend to have poorer English skills and greater difficulty in having their qualifications recognised, and thus suffer often dramatic downward mobility, moving from highly skilled professions to unskilled, low-paid and low status jobs in Australia. Thus this thesis demonstrates that the value of human capital is context-dependent. It can only be valorised in a new labour market if it is sufficiently culturally compatible with local standards. Therefore, the experiences of Chinese migrant women complicate the �success story� that dominates discussions of migrant employment in Australia. Ultimately, the prevailing economistic approach fails to see the diversity and complexity of migrant experiences. We need to see migrants as social beings, whose settlement in a new country is crucially shaped by their gender and birthplace, and broader institutional factors, which determine how human capital is used and rewarded. This is the mission of this thesis.

This project traces the history of population movements out of “Red China” during the Cold War and investigates how certain Chinese migrants came to be treated as refugees when the vast majority did not. From 1949 to 1989 thousands of people left the People’s Republic of China. The settler societies of the British Commonwealth offered refuge to only a few. Contrary to the politics surrounding the flight of individuals and groups from the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc, no discourse of “Cold War warrior” or “freedom fighter” attended the movement of people leaving the Chinese mainland after the victory of the Chinese Communist Party in 1949. In investigating the reason for this marked difference, this project connects the mediating role played by humanitarian actors and officials in Hong Kong with longstanding histories of racist exclusion in the settler societies of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. States were confronted with the challenge of reconciling notions of universal human rights, liberty and freedom with their persistent reservations about the desirability of Chinese migrants. As a result, there was an inconsistent and fractured response to the idea advanced by NGOs, churches and Chinese community organizations that the people leaving China were refugees in need of assistance. States responded to the movement of people and pressure from humanitarian actors by carefully delineating the ways and means in which people would be identified as refugees. They proffered aid accordingly. Questions of assistance and protection were deeply entwined with the elaborate migration controls and regulation that characterized the international migration regime of the late twentieth century. Authorities frequently defined people as illegal in order to reject calls to provide assistance or protection. While the discourse of illegality undermined claims to refugeehood, the growth in the number and variety of official migration categories meant that people simply moved according to whatever category, or discrete resettlement program, was available to them. This movement subverted state efforts at regulating migration and further undermined the work of religious and secular humanitarians who consistently depicted refugees as abject and helpless. Humanitarian actors were therefore only modestly successful in their efforts to secure consistent state engagement with refugee issues. For most of the Cold War, refugees from China were unwanted in the settler societies of the British Commonwealth.

This thesis is concerned with student migration to the UK. The research objectives of this study are to investigate the personal, familial and social processes pertaining to international student migration and to contribute to the theorization of migration. To further its research objectives the study adopts a grounded theory approach which allows students to voice the concerns, motives and influences pertaining to their migration actions and intentions. The method of the inquiry is qualitative and is based on individual, in-depth, interviews with Greek and Chinese students at the University of Sheffield. In order to interpret and analyse its findings, this research employs the work of Pierre Bourdieu and the Life-course approach on migration. Further, these two distinct bodies of work are combined into a theoretical framework able to further social scientific understanding of migration decision-making. This study brings forward the concept of an intended migration trajectory as a theoretical tool with the potential to enhance our understanding of the migration process. Student migration is found to be a response to the individual and familial needs and ambitions generated by the context in which agents move. Individual actions and intentions are part of an effort to further needs and ambitions in multiple spheres of activity in the best possible way. Migration is best described as a process in the sense that migration partly alters the context facing individuals and families and so contributes to a partial change in agents' needs, ambitions and, ultimately, migration intentions. Overall, this study accomplishes its objectives to investigate Greek and Chinese student migration to the UK and to further social scientists' theoretical understanding of 21st century migration flows.

Vast disparities exist between China’s rural and urban areas. Throughout the history of Communist Party rule, ever-widening rural-urban inequality, problems with migration to the cities, and the threat of rural unrest have afflicted the countryside. Efforts by previous administrations have largely failed to solve the nation’s rural problems. China’s current leaders are determined to tackle these issues by means of a change in the direction in policy: the new focus is on sustainable development and social justice rather than rapid economic growth. At the same time, the central government hopes to strengthen the Communist Party’s power base and reduce potential threats to its ongoing reign. While the new policy direction is expected to improve the standard of living of China’s rural people and reduce social conflict in the short term, it may be insufficient to bring peace and satisfaction among the people in the long term.

This is a content analysis of the Chinese news paper People’s Daily (Renmin Ribao 人民日报). It examines articles published by the People’s Daily reporting about Sweden in migration contexts between January 1980 and September 2015. The purpose of the project is to investigate changes over time when it comes to agenda-setting, together with which other countries Sweden is mentioned and framing used in the articles. The topics of the articles are listed and a deductive frame analysis is carried out, showing clear signs of changes over time. The data shows that there has been a shift from reporting on international disputes to reporting on Europe’s migration issues. From investigating with which other countries Sweden is mentioned, a conclusion can be drawn that Sweden is portrayed as a country that collaborates with the other European countries to a great extent. The data also shows that there is a low usage of the conflict frame, but a high usage the responsibility- and ­morality frames in the People’s Daily which is evidence of letting the ideology of the authors shine through. The People’s Daily shows signs of political correctness by shifting from a high usage of episodic framing to thematic framing.

More than 1.2 million students have left China to study abroad during the past three decades of economic reform in China. In 2007 alone, China sent around 144,000 students abroad, 167 times of the number of students in 1978. This large scale of student migration has often raised debate on brain drain , because many of these student migrants do not return to China upon graduation. However, there has been a reverse trend in the past decade as China witnessed a growing wave of return migration. More and more Chinese students are coming back to China after their studies and work abroad due to the strong economic situation and promising career opportunities at home. These returnees are given the nick-name Haigui or, in English, sea-turtles. This doctoral research is therefore an academic inquiry to this emerging social phenomenon. While international migration is mainly researched on the national level, this innovative doctoral research seeks to understand the relationship between migration and global city formation. To do so, it analyses inter-city migration flow by applying a relational case study of circular student migration between Shanghai and Paris and examines the rationale behind return migration and the role of management/business student returnees from French business schools on Shanghai s pathway to become China s premier global city. This research reveals that global cities have become the strategic points for Chinese talents (students and skilled professionals) acting the role as sending, transiting and receiving sites, which are interconnected in the dynamic process of knowledge accumulation, contact making and network creation. Chinese student returnees contribute to the development of Shanghai by actively engaging in transnational activities including developing and maintaining cross-border organisation/corporate ties and personal networks, knowledge transfer, acting as global-local business and cultural interface, as well as enriching cosmopolitan and multicultural business and cultural spaces in Shanghai.

My dissertation examines the transformation of family and the reinvention of home from migrant women’s perspectives as represented in contemporary Chinese and Sinophone literature and film. In the era of globalization, people are increasingly mobile both within and across borders, resulting in the reshaping of family structure and re-conceptualization of home. In this dissertation I contend that migration is closely related to family dynamics and that migration also facilitates women’s agency in transforming family structure, navigating cultural differences, and negotiating with local societies and nation-states. The Chinese concept of jia 家 can be translated into English as family, home or house, and “homeness” in the context of Chinese migration is particularly associated with a geographical origin, a dwelling, a settlement, or familial intimacy. In this regard, I argue that migration is a process which reflects tradition, modernity and transnationalism, yet it can move beyond the metanarrative of homeland and nationalism that is often promoted by patriarchal cultural producers. I treat home as a locally defined notion to offer an alternate understanding of women migrants’ localization rather than focusing on the myth of return to the homeland. Women’s transgression of the boundaries of the household and their movement to other geographical locales transform their gendered role within the family, inciting their agency in opposing patriarchy and nationalism and creating space within which to negotiate the challenges of gender inequity, cultural difference, and marginalization. In contrast with the male-centered grand narrative featuring nostalgia for the homeland, I find that tales of women migrants show their protagonists eagerly adapting to their host countries and embracing local experiences. Hence, my dissertation focuses on the literary and cinematic representation of women migrants in contemporary Chinese and Sinophone literary works, documentaries and fictional films and explores four types of movement: immigration to North America, multiple transnational movements, cross-Strait migration from Taiwan to China, and new marriage-based immigration in Taiwan. Analysis of these works will improve understanding of the transnational flow of populations, the contested notion of home in migration, as well as the ways in which place-based literary and cultural productions are influenced by real-world migration.

Notre thèse s’intéresse particulièrement aux répercussions des modes d’inscription économiques des entrepreneurs chinois sur la recomposition des équilibres internes du marché du travail invisible à Dakar, incarné par des acteurs économiques accumulant les écarts aux normes majoritaires dans un environnement urbain marqué par la lutte des différents acteurs en présence pour l’appropriation des territoires et des ressources offertes par la ville. Notre ambition est de rendre compte des régimes de concurrence, de coopération, des luttes pour l’espace et les ressources offertes par la ville, des logiques de distanciation entre acteurs évoluant sur des segments concurrents. Dans cette perspective, nous avons opté pour une approche multi-site impliquant divers acteurs de la compétition urbaine : commerçants de rue sénégalais, cordonniers, pour apprécier les différentes postures d’acteurs de l’économie invisible face à la recomposition de l’équilibre interne de leurs segments d’activités. Our thesis is particularly interested in the impact of economic modes inscriptions of Chinese entrepreneurs on the of internal balances recomposition of the invisible job market, incarnated by economic actors accumulating the differences to the majority standards in an urban environment characterized by the struggle of the different actors involved in the appropriation of land and resources offered by the city.Our goal is to realize competition regimes, cooperation, fights for space and resources offered by the city, distancing logic between actors working on competing segments. In this perspective, we opted for a multi-site approach involving various urban competition actors: Senegalese street traders, shoemakers, to appreciate the different postures of the actor’s invisible economy facing to the recomposition of the internal balance of their business segments.The emphasis on the reconfiguration of the invisible job market induced by the co-presence in this type of ethnographical research examines the domination reports, resistors, but also adaptations that punctuate the actors in the urban area where is building new trade arrangements between tension and compromise

Mais face aux sources d’informations de plus en plus variées,beaucoup d’immigrés chinois conservent une relation étroite et privilégiée avec les médias ethniques locaux. Parallèlement, le gouvernement chinois a toujours l’intention de maintenir un lien avec les migrants chinois du monde entier et de propager la culture chinoise à travers ces communautés, surtout les médias ethniques. En analysant l’évolution de la politique chinoise et les échanges entre les autorités chinoises et les médias chinois en Europe, on observe un rapprochement entre les deux acteurs, mais avec prudence. À travers une analyse de contenu des médias et une enquête effectuée dans sept pays européens sur la réception des immigrés chinois, cette recherche montre ensuite que les médias chinois d’outre-mer jouent le rôle d’un conciliateur et d’un porte-parole parmi les membres de la communauté
The history of Chinese immigration in Europe dates back to the sixteenth century. The first Chinese newspapers were born there three centuries later. This ethnic media was created to seek solutions for China which was troubled at that time. Its focus has been changed to the local Chinese immigrants’ life progressively for over a century. However, the Chinese government still somehow contacts with the Chinese communities and the ethnic media in Europe. So this thesis aims to study and reveal the current relationship among China’s policy, Chinese migrants and the Chinese language media in Europe. Nowadays, in the context of globalization, the information and communication technologies enables global broadcast for all kinds of Chinese media. But despite this variety of information sources, many Chinese immigrants in Europe maintain a close and special relationship with the ethnic media. Meanwhile, the Chinese government always intends to maintain a close relation with Chinese migrants around the world and spread the Chinese culture through these communities, especially through ethnic media. By analyzing the development of China’s policy and the interactions between the Chinese authorities and Chinese media in Europe, this thesis observes a special connection with caution. Then, through a content analysis of media and a survey of Chinese immigrants conducted in seven European countries, this research reveals that the Chinese over seas media fulfils the functions of a conciliator and a spokes person within the community

This paper investigates and compares Chinese master’s students in Denmark and Sweden, focusing on their motivation for choosing to study in Denmark and Sweden, their daily life and study acculturation experience, as well as their intentions of staying or returning after graduating.The paper provides information on the current student migration situation, and presents relevant motivational migration and acculturation theories. A semi-structured interview method is then used to gather qualitative data from six Chinese master’s students studying in Denmark and Sweden. In the analysis, the paper applies the theories on the interview data.This paper’s findings suggest that the main reasons for the Chinese master’s students to study abroad is to improve their competencies and experience foreign culture. When choosing the study destination, decisive factors include the quality of the program, the academic reputation of the universities, the use of English in teaching and cultural aspirations.The effects of cultural differences, study situation and finance are factors that affect their psychological well-being during the process of acculturation. Their psychological well-being generally follows a “U” curve with an initial high level followed by a lower level which eventually increases to a higher level once again. The students encounter challenges in their study related to the Danish and Swedish academia’s direct teacher-student and student-student communication, as well as the English language.Regarding the students’ intentions after graduating, some plan to return to China because of family, friends and personal relationship reasons, while others intend to stay mainly for career reasons, but with the intention of ultimately returning to China.

This multimedia project explores the lives of Chinese and Taiwanese migrants living in South Africa and how language, culture, community and marginalisation have come to shape their identities and to visually represent them in a way that is not prevalent in mainstream media. It uses two visual mediums – photography and video interviews – to understand these migrants’ experiences, how they perceive themselves and how they think society perceives them. Data analysis consisted of a process of coding the video interviews and structural analysis of the visuals. Rising worldwide migration has simultaneously increased the spread of diasporic communities. China’s positionality as an economic powerhouse and the influx of East Asian migrants to South Africa in recent years has shone a light on this minority population group. However, much of what is known about them tends to be through forms of mass media which perpetuates stereotypical representations. This paper draws on various literature including acculturation, diasporic communities, representation, languaging and xenophobia to explore the lives of East Asian migrants living in South Africa and search for more empowered forms of representation.

This dissertation examines the mechanisms of the circular migration of Chinese and Indian engineers and technology entrepreneurs. The study is based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative data - including a survey of alumni from one of the Indian Institutes of Technology, a survey of Chinese engineers in Boston, and in-depth interviews. The study first looks into the post-migration settlement process of in the host countries and identifies significant changes in migrants' social networks at different stages of their careers. The study also examines the social processes that affect the decisions of migrant engineers to return to their home countries and their experience as returnees. In contrast to the conventional wisdom that often views the migration of highly skilled workers as highly individualized, the study finds that return migration is not a lonely journey. It is very often a group process instead of an individual process. Migrants establish various types of social ties and institutions during the migration and settlement process. They also draw heavily upon these networks and institutions when they return to their home countries. Another key finding is that return migration is often associated with entrepreneurship. Returnees from overseas have a higher propensity to start their own businesses than either non-migrants or migrants who stay abroad. This pattern reflects the interaction between the opportunity structures in the home countries and migrants' individual characteristics. A mixture of opportunities and constraints that exist in China and India often leads engineers into entrepreneurship when they return. By starting their own business, returnees can create a niche for themselves in the existing structure of the home countries. In addition, returnee entrepreneurs who are successful often have returned in groups.
