This article has incorporated the content analysis material and the problems of translating the socio-political terminology of the modern Chinese language. The question of the theory of translation, the main imperatives of this field, as well as the question of the formation of the main directions of development of the theory of translation in ancient China is touched upon. The lexica-stylistic and semantic features of terms have an important role in the study of the socio-political layer of the vocabulary of modern Chinese. Analysis of these features can give a new solution in the search for the adequacy and equivalence of new concepts. The characteristic features of the socio-political terminology of the Chinese language in terms of the political and cultural perspective, the importance of the historical context of speech and the original understanding of the terms in the socio-political layer of speech also constituted the main core of the subject of analysis.

With some examples given, the paper points out six main misunderstandings that exist in eco-waterfront practice under Chinese background. It brings forward restoration of ecology as the principle to guide the waterfront constructions, and also offers some concrete methods through several designs. Here “restoration” has two meanings: one is that original meaning or intention should be given back to the word “ecology”; the other is instead of human’s inventing something ecological, local ecology characteristics should be given back to urban waterfront.

This paper aims to define the concept of traditional Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine has its own unique system of knowledge, which fundamentally defines all of its therapeutic procedures (acupuncture, manual therapy, and Chinese herbal medicine). The authors offer a detailed description of the theoretical basics of Chinese medicine: classification of the normal and pathological processes of the human body based on functional models and a high degree of therapeutic individualization. The authors describe the current practice of Chinese medicine based on the Chinese model, without which modern Chinese medicine cannot exist. This concept pervades the education, clinical practice and research of Chinese medicine. If we hope to adequately satisfy scientific inquiry about Chinese medicine, we must first define its theoretical background and get acquainted with its scope of usage in modern China. Separating printed or handwritten characters from a noisy background is valuable for many applications including test paper autoscoring. The complex structure of Chinese characters makes it difficult to obtain the goal because of easy loss of fine details and overall structure in reconstructed characters. This paper proposes a method for separating Chinese characters based on generative adversarial network (GAN). We used ESRGAN as the basic network structure and applied dilated convolution and a novel loss function that improve the quality of reconstructed characters. Four popular Chinese fonts (Hei, Song, Kai, and Imitation Song) on real data collection were tested, and the proposed design was compared with other semantic segmentation approaches. The experimental results showed that the proposed method effectively separates Chinese characters from noisy background. In particular, our methods achieve better results in terms of Intersection over Union (IoU) and optical character recognition (OCR) accuracy.

when meeting problems, different people may have different problem-solving styles. This phenomenon is easy to spot on campus. In the classroom, Chinese students often prefer to solve problems by themselves when they encounter problems, such as searching for answers on the Internet, and rarely discuss with professors or classmates. English-speaking students, on the other hand, prefer to solve problems in discussions, and they prefer to ask their own questions directly in class rather than finding answers after class. But in previous research, there has been little research on what leads to different problem-solving styles. Therefore, the following research will study the reasons why Chinese students and American students have different problem-solving styles from two aspects: historical reasons and educational systems. Chinese history has long been influenced by Confucianism, which emphasizes authoritarianism and collectivism, so Chinese students are more accustomed to receiving knowledge passively and solving problems passively. American history, on the other hand, emphasizes more free and logical thinking, so American students prefer to actively explore problems. In addition, China's unique college entrance exam education system allows Chinese students to do well in basic subjects, but the fill-in-the-blank education deprives Chinese students of the desire to actively explore knowledge. Compared to the Chinese education system, the U.S. education system was democratized after World War II, which has led to a diversity of educational resources, greater respect for students' interests, and enhanced student initiative. However, a liberal system is often more difficult to manage classes and students, and because there is no mandatory learning, American students generally perform worse in basic subjects.

This article dwells on the study of the Russian-language literary pseudonym treated in the background of the Chinese linguistic culture. The relevance of this study is determined by the growing interest in studying the comparative aspect of a literary pseudonym from the position of a representative of the Chinese linguistic culture. The main purpose of this article is to study the features of literary pseudonyms in Russian and Chinese. Research methods are a method of analysis and synthesis, classification, comparative, contrastive and statistical analyzes. The study reveals that a pseudonym and culture are in a symbiotic relationship, since cultural changes can cause changes in the content of pseudonyms. Consequently, we have the right to consider a literary pseudonym as a phenomenon of linguaculture, taking into account the fact that the linguistic features of Russian and Chinese pseudonyms are evidence of the differences between the two sociocultural systems. These differences make it possible to consider a literary pseudonym, at the same time representing a kind of historical phenomenon, as a product of historical development that arises in certain cultural and historical conditions, absorbing the features of its time, closely related to traditional values and the life experience of their carriers.

Studies from information-processing and language comprehension research have reported that background knowledge facilitates reading and writing. By comparing Chinese language development of heritage students who had home background in Chinese language and culture with those who did not, this study found that heritage learners did significantly better than their non-heritage counterparts in speaking, listening, grammar, and sentence constructions, but not in reading comprehension, vocabulary learning, and Chinese character writing. These results suggest that heritage learners’ oral exposure to their home language does not necessarily lead them to acquire reading and writing skills more quickly than non-heritage learners. Home background knowledge of Chinese, a language with notoriously difficult orthography, may not support reading comprehension or vocabulary learning if that knowledge does not include sufficient exposure to the script system.

Abstract This study investigates how Chinese logogriphs are comprehended by learners of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) with different Chinese proficiencies and cultural backgrounds. Eighty-eight CFL learners from four cultures (South Koreans, Southeast Asians, Western Caucasians and Arabs) were divided into two Chinese proficiency groups according to their HSK scores, and 15 L1 Chinese speakers also took part in the experiment as a control group. The participants were asked to write down how they interpreted Chinese logogriphs in questionnaires. An ANOVA analysis was conducted to examine the effects of Chinese proficiency and cultural background on logogriph comprehension. The results indicate that the accuracy of logogriph comprehension and the frequency of adopting logogriph-solving strategies positively correlated with the learners’ Chinese proficiency, and that those with higher proficiency used more linguistic and cultural knowledge of the target language. As for cultural influence, Western Caucasians tended to think more visually than the other three cultural groups, and South Koreans and Southeast Asians were better at activating Chinese semantic knowledge. The closer the CFL learners’ culture is to Chinese culture, the more similar strategies they adopted to those of L1 Chinese participants. Moreover, the participants’ Chinese proficiency and cultural background show an interactive effect on their logogriph comprehension, with the former factor having a greater influence than the latter in this process.

Under the new situation of Chinese internationalization promotion and educational informatization, online learning of Chinese as a foreign language is the key to learning Chinese as a foreign language in the future. Today, people learning Chinese as a second language must learn Chinese quickly online. However, it is not the best thing to open a website for learning Chinese as a foreign language at present. Learning Chinese online may not meet the needs of students, and it is not uncommon for students to give up in the process of Chinese learning. Therefore, the article discusses the teaching methods of Chinese as a foreign language and the use of new media and analyzes the shortcomings of Chinese teaching. This paper demonstrates the possibility and scientificity of using mobile app to conduct online interactive teaching of Chinese as a foreign language from both theoretical and practical aspects, aiming to promote the development of online teaching of Chinese as a foreign language, and then promote the promotion of foreign language Chinese as a foreign language. The results of the survey show that 75%, 96.1%, and 96.2% of the students who have studied Chinese for three months, six months, and one year, respectively, have downloaded the app Chinese language-assisted teaching software to learn Chinese.

Using data from the 2011 population census and the Hong Kong Panel Study of Social Dynamics, this paper examines the academic performance and non-cognitive skills of the children of Chinese migrants in Hong Kong aged 14 and below. Our analyses show that the poorer academic performance of Chinese migrants’ children results mainly from disadvantageous family background and parenting practices. Children of cross-border and migrant families do not differ from children of natives in Chinese, mathematics, or English, once parental education and parent–child communication about school life are controlled for. Children from migrant families have significantly higher levels of non-cognitive ability than children of natives. Our analyses also show that parental education is positively associated with Chinese and English performances; parents talking with children about school life significantly improves children’s performance in Chinese, mathematics, and English; and parental migrant status and parenting practices have positive effects on non-cognitive skills.

In the Chinese teaching for foreign students, Chinese teachers do not participate in the assessment of their institutions, which is not conducive to the sustainable development of Chinese language education. The potential value of the teaching evaluation is not floating on the surface, so the data mining is used to discover implicit correlations between the data. The application of data mining in the evaluation of Chinese teaching for foreign students helps to ensure safety of the teaching evaluation system for foreign students. In this paper, a Chinese teaching evaluation system that is based on the data mining is built, in which the DA is applied to the evaluation of Chinese teaching. Finally, the performance of the algorithm is tested, the results show that the DA greatly improves the classification accuracy of the model, the improved model can largely alleviate overfitting, and the feature dimension data extracted by DA are more representative. The system proposed in this paper has good performance, which can greatly improve the security of the Chinese teaching evaluation system.

Binus University, established in 1974 and located in West Jakarta, is one of famous universities in Indonesia. This university has some literature departments including Chinese literature department which was started in 2002. At this moment, this department has 419 students and 28 lecturers who have different background. The difference of the students and lecturers’ point of view becomes one the backgrounds of this paper. The others are text books used, campus rules and alternative solution toward the problem faced. The method used in this research is direct observation. From the data taken and analyzed, it can be concluded: (1) Chinese department students, either Chinese descendant or not, has problems in learning Chinese, (2) The number of lecturers of Bachelor graduates is more than the master ones, (3) The Chinese language mastery of Chinese descendant students is better than non Chinese descendant ones, (4) The text books used are not all suitable for Chinese department student, and (5) The quality control system of Chinese teaching is good.

Writing has always been one of the difficulties in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. With the advent of the information society, modern information technology, represented by networking, digitalization, multimedia, and intelligence, has become a creative tool to expand human capabilities, changing people’s traditional way of life, study, and work. Guided by the theory of integration of information technology and curriculum, combined with the characteristics of Chinese writing, this paper puts forward that the goal of integration of information technology and Chinese writing is to change the traditional teaching structure, create an ideal environment for students to learn Chinese and improve their Chinese information literacy. A practical teaching platform for college Chinese writing is constructed, which is designed from the user role and based on user access control. The design includes the roles of graduate students, foreign teachers, administrators, and users. Each user has different operation rights, module rights, and management rights. According to a small amount of online information and the results of a previous course, we can make a good prediction. The results show that this method is effective, and we can predict students’ academic performance through their online behavior.

After collecting the data by looking for the appropriate algorithm, this paper analyzes the differences between chinese women's consumption differences before and after the reform, and discusses them in order to experiment to get the data results. The experimental results show that with the development of the times, the difference of Chinese women's consumption concept is changing more and more.

The article explores the ideas, characteristic for religious mindset and philosophy of Confucianism (儒 家思想), about spiritual immortality, filial piety and ethics, which have been firmly established in funerary culture. Harmonic balance of Confucianism, Daoism (道教) and Buddhism brought forth the ideology and concept of immortal soul, according to which the soul does not die after person’s death, and the tomb is its dwelling place. Thus, the construction of tombs gained great significance. The author analyzes Confucian idea of ‘filial piety’, which, merging with ritual funeral concept, developed into a concept of ‘meticulous following of funerary rituals, mourning of parents and worship of ancestors’ (慎终 追远), where the main emphasis is on the organization of parents’ funeral, devotion to ancestors and diligent care of their remains. Furthermore, as Ancient China was an agricultural society which was deliberately devoted to earth, it was believed that the earth is crucial for survival, and one can only rest after death if one’s body is committed to earth. So, to show filial affection, properly make sacrifices, pray for protection, protect the remains and ensure eternal peaceful rest, the internment in the ground became an obligatory condition. And various funeral arrangements, such as marking the grave, its decoration, etc., gradually transformed into funerary plastic art. Consequently, burial in the ground allowed for the possibility and resources to form the funerary plastic art. Ceremonial ideas presented by Mencius (孟子) have become firmly established in the concept of funeral. In a feudal society, for the convenience of government and maintaining the stability of society, etiquette, contributing to the systematization of the hierarchical order of all strata of society, as well as extreme admiration for the imperial power, became a powerful ideological weapon of the rulers. In this ideology, sculptures in the tombs of the supreme rulers – emperors and wangs – are not only guards protecting from evil, but to a greater extent they are also a symbol of imperial power. Therefore, the themes, the number and the size of the sculptures in the tombs of the emperors and wangs were of the highest importance. There is also a strict hierarchical order in the sculptures in front of the tombs of government officials of various levels. Thus, etiquette established standards and order in burial plastic art.

This article investigates the influence of the position of occlusion, structural composition, and design educational status on Chinese character recognition accuracy and response time. Tsao and Liao conducted an experiment using 18 of the 4,000 most commonly used Chinese characters and suggested that the primary and secondary recognition features of a “single-sided” occluded Chinese character are the key radical (or initial strokes) and the key component (i.e., combination of strokes), respectively. The study concluded that right-side occluded characters require a shorter response time and yield more accurate recognition and that educational background does not significantly affect recognition accuracy and response time. The present study considered the same 18 Chinese characters and extended the work of Tsao and Liao by exploring accuracy rate and response time in design and nondesign educational groups for the recognition of “double-sided” occluded Chinese characters. The experimental results indicated that right-side occlusion (including both bottom-right and top-right occlusion) requires a shorter response time and yields more accurate recognition than left-side occlusion. These results agree with those of Tsao and Liao, who found that the key radical of a Chinese character is its key visual recognition feature. Even double-sided occlusion of Chinese characters does not affect the recognition outcome if the position of occlusion does not blur the key radical. Moreover, the participants majoring in design recognized the occluded Chinese characters more slowly than those with no educational background in design.

A preoccupation with cosmology and the correlation of celestial events with terrestrial activity dates back to the very beginnings of Chinese civilization. The existence of such a mindset is shown by archeo-logical discoveries from the Neolithic as well as the early Bronze Age. The belief in heaven-dwelling high gods like Shang Di and Tian also had antecedents in the pre-Shang period. In addition, analysis of scientifically verifiable accounts of planetary massings from the second millennium B.C. suggests that important cosmological and astrological notions took shape much earlier than previously thought. On the basis of this evidence it now appears likely that such conceptions are intimately connected both with influential later beliefs about a Mandate of Heaven, which asserted heavenly intervention as the cause of change in temporal governance, and with later Five Elements speculative schemes, which claimed to discern a preordained phenomenological pattern in the dynastic succession. The cosmicization of experience in the archaic period to which the evidence points and the vehement reassertion of Heaven's Mandate by the Zhou dynasty founders together confirm the epoch-making historical role of the Shang-Zhou transition in decisively reaffirming “patterning oneself in Heaven's image” (xiang tian 象天) as the fundamental metaphor in Chinese political legitimation.

This research aims to determine the effect of management background which proxy by accounting education background, MBA education background, Chinese ethnicity and intellectual capital (VAIC) on conventional banks’ financial performance (ROA) in Indonesia. The Population consists of all conventional banks listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange period of 2012 to 2015. Using purposive sampling method to screen the data, the final sample for this research is 140 data that consists of 39 banking companies. This research used Eviews7 software to conduct panel data regression analysis. The results showed that accounting education background and Chinese ethnicity are not significantly affect financial performance. Meanwhile MBA education background and VAIC are significantly affecting financial performance (ROA).Keywords: management background, VAIC, ROA, banking.

Ideophonic reduplication is a special type of reduplication in Mandarin Chinese. By repeating the mere sounds of a word or expression taken from the linguistic context, it turns content words into temporary ideophones. I argue that this operation highlights the signifiant (the acoustic form) and downplays the signifié (the concept referring to the subject in reality) of the reduplicated segments. This type of reduplication differs from pragmatic repetition, and it has a number of distinctive characteristics. I argue that the development of ideophonic reduplication in Chinese is closely connected with the typological characteristics of Chinese.

Introduction. The given paper is devoted to questions, which make up the dissertation research section upon the genre semantics of the Chinese composers’ solo piano creations. The general theoretic background for the vast amount of the musical artifacts studying is specified in the current section. Theoretical background. In his studying of the Chinese composers’ piano creative work the author follows the research trend, originated by G. Schneerson, Lui Ji, Wei Tinge, Liu Fuan, Zhang Xiaohu, Zhang Qian and others. In particular, the current research is based upon the works by Bu Li, Bian Meng, Wang Ango, Wang Yuhe, Cheng Xu and other authors, devoted to the problem of the European and national music traditions interaction in the Chinese composers’ piano artifacts. The insufficient readiness of this thesis is mentioned. Namely, it is still the point of discussion and analyzing, to what extend and in what quality the genre system of European piano music is mastered by the Chinese composers. It is another point of investigation if their compositions are the result of the surface signs borrowing, taken from the most widely spread European genres or the Chinese composers were able to comprehend the genre semantics profoundly and develop some genres creatively, basing on the national musical tradition. Objectives. The main objective of the current article is the essential theoretical background specification for the Chinese composers’ piano creations genre peculiarities research; in particular, the polygenicity, the borrowed material usage principle, the composer’s genre stylization method. Methods. The task setting and developing is based upon the functional and morphological approaches to the musical genre comprehension, on the terminological analysis of the musical genres and styles understanding, on the upto-date philological and musicological conceptions of composition poetics, artistic genre and stylization method. Results and discussion. The concept of musical genre is defined as the type of the creation or the musical creative activity. Here the category of genre involves not only the formal but also the substantial musical compositions properties, their typical semantics. The musical genre genesis is specified by three factors: 1) the functional creations similarity, the identity of their assignment; 2) the similarity of the conditions of the composition creating and performing; 3) artistic and contextual affinity. The given factors specify the occurance of common musical form properties among several compositions, and these properties are defined as genre style. The composition style properties quite definitely “indicate” some kind of genre “prototype”, and in this sense they are the sign-index of the genre. The typical artisticcontent properties of musical creations and performing are also the index of the genre. These typical properties and designated as genre image (or genre semantics). The genre style and the corresponding images reflect the real type relations of the musical practice phenomena. It enables the composers to use the formal signs of a certain genre as an artistic attribute well recognized by the audience. In the musical genres system, the areas of interactive and independent music are conventionally separated. The first group includes the numerous kinds of every day musical performing, where music interacts with the riot, dance, poetic verbal speech, theatre performance and other types of a person’s artistic activity. Meanwhile, the main and specific function of the independent music is its being the object of artistic perception. The independent music artifacts don’t need any interaction with the expressive means of other arts. The piano music can belong to both spheres. A lot of independent sphere piano music compositions are bear the names of the genres belonging to the folklore, theatre music, church rituals, urban life. We mean such as piano “lullabies”, “ballads”, “minuets”, “waltzes”, “marches”, “arias”, ”love songs” etc. there is still another phenomenon: the piano music pieces, the name of which is not connected with the interactive music genres, are often profoundly connected with them on the levels of the language and artistic text. Quite often, the piano pieces are built on certain composition, borrowed from the sphere of folklore, popular or church music. In all the alike cases we can notice the artistically justified synchronous (non consequent) interaction of several musical genres signs and properties in the form of the definite composition. This phenomenon is characterized as polygenicity. Two main approaches to achieve the polygenre artistic expressive effect are defined: a) the use of the “exterior” (non native, another’s, alien) musical material; b) the genre style characteristic properties reproduction (genre stylization). The given work gives the definitions for the methods of different musical genres properties combination by means of borrowing and of the “exterior” material use in the frames of the original composition: quotations, arrangements, edited versions, fantasies and transcriptions. The genres, originated by these composing methods, are characterized. The essence of the genre stylization method in the Chinese composers’ creations is revealed. It is the reproduction of tonal and compositional peculiarities of the certain traditional Chinese music genre style into the composition text belonging to the European piano music genre system. The wide range of this method implementation is mentioned: from total style imitation to allusion. Conclusions. The existence of the great amount of the piano music compositions in the today’s Chinese musical culture motivates the overall and profound scientific analysis of this phenomenon, in particular, it stimulates the given sphere genre features revelation in both synchronous and diachronic (historic-evolutionary) aspects. The piano music genre sphere researcher needs the clearly formulated, capacious and non-contradictory categories of musical genre, genre style, genre system, genre semantics, as well as of the notions, derivative and connected with them. As it was mentioned by numerous specialists, the Chinese piano music distinctive feature consists in its lasting connection with the national music tradition. The task, set for the musicologists, is to define the nature, the principles, the variants of the interaction between the European piano music genres and styles and the traditional Chinese music genres and styles ( folklore, theatre, popular song). The given article states that the first artistic method, leading to the combination of the European and Chinese traditions in the frames of one composition consists of the composer’s borrowing and using some “alien” material, a fragment of the famous musical creation in his artifact. Thus, using serves as a general notion, embracing a number of certain musical text composing methods, which include quoting, arranging, creating versions, fantasies and transcription. The second artistic approach, leading to European piano music and the Chinese traditional music interaction, consists in the artistic method of stylization. This method implies the reproduction of tonal and compositional peculiarities of the certain traditional Chinese music genre style into the composition text belonging to the European piano music genre system. This method reveals the unlimited possibilities to create the bright vivid effects for genre dialogue, conflicts, interaction, as well as very delicate conceptual modus, allusions, hints, promoting the remarkable enrichment of the compositions genre figurativeness. Basing on the given theoretical background the author is going to analyze the genre-style contents of the seven-volume edition “A century of Piano Solo Works by Chinese Composers”. This content may serve as a working model for the studying of the whole thesaurus of piano music artifacts, created by the Chinese composers.

<p>It is observed that Chinese international students tend to be rhetorically incompetent, compared with their American peers, which triggers a comparative study of their rhetorical competence in the same teaching environment in the U.S. The experimental group and the control group are populated in 20 students respectively, the former group being 20 Chinese students who once major in English and communication in one Chinese famous university but now study in one American university, the latter being 20 American college students in the same class. They are selected to participate in tests of speech and writing competence. The result indicates that there is some discrepancy of speech competence between Chinese and American college students, as well as of writing competence, from which we gain some applications for the cultivation of rhetorical competence among foreign language learners in China, and some suggestions for Chinese international students’ success in American job market. </p>
