Using a thematic analysis, this study examines the presentation of donor conception in 30 books of fiction written for young adults. Most of the donor-conceived characters in these books live in single mother families, the majority are girls, and most have some kind of status as outsiders. Donor conception is presented differently depending on the type of family in which the teen lives. Children living with single mothers are most often endangered. Children living with lesbian-couple parents are most often marked as outsiders. Among children living with heterosexual-couple parents, donor conception is often presented as a significant issue that can unsettle family dynamics and lead to a search for the donor or donor siblings.

The aim of the article is to consider the formation of reading culture as an important pedagogical problem of today in the context of domestic and global problems of the development of students’ reading literacy, to single out the pedagogical conditions for the formation of the reading culture of an individual. Ukrainian and foreign scientists, teachers, and common people emphasize the crisis of children's reading: children and youth do not have a developed interest in this field of study, there is no motivation to read. This is a global trend. Pedagogical conditions for the formation of the reading culture of an individual are highlighted: from the teacher's point of view, this is high-quality preparation for teaching schoolchildren to read, mastery of a high level of reading culture, reading practice, children's reading circle; students believe that this is the activation of independent reading activity aimed at the development of abilities, interest in literature, improvement of knowledge, reading abilities and skills, active reading activity; parents think that it is the possession of reading culture, interest in reading, desire to ensure that fiction books do not lose their educational role among children, so that the great spiritual potential of fiction does not remain outside their attention, etc.

The article outlines the tasks of working with children in the aspect of forming tolerance in them; the conditions and content-technological support for the education of interpersonal tolerance in preschool children are presented, which we define as a set of content areas and their technological implementation, i.e. methodical toolkit (forms, methods, tools). The conditions that optimize the process of forming a child's tolerant personality are singled out, namely: creation of a tolerant space in the kindergarten; teachers' orientation towards maintaining tolerant relations with children and educating them in the appropriate position; ensuring close cooperation with parents; application of content-technological support in work with children aimed at fostering tolerance. Among the areas of work, we single out the following: formation of knowledge about oneself, surrounding people, about different peoples and nations, rules of behaviour in society, understanding of the equality of all people; development of a positive emotional attitude towards people; formation of socially oriented motivation; formation of humanistic values; education of tolerant behaviour. A number of forms and methods of working with children and with parents are proposed, which, as the most important component of influencing the development of a child's personality, have a significant impact on the formation of tolerance or intolerance towards representatives of society. Subjects of classes are presented, fiction is recommended, interactive games and exercises are offered, games and exercises of a moral and ethical orientation, energy exercises, revealed features of artistic and productive activity, familiarization with the folklore of Ukrainians and decorative and applied art, selected story role-playing, didactic games, the topic of everyday life situations for discussion and dramatization, with an emphasis on the celebration of national holidays, which in general will help an adult in raising a tolerant child's personality, in particular, not only in correcting intolerance, but also in preventing its manifestations.

The presented article considers the peculiarities of extracurricular educational work in rural school conditions. The problem of developing the interests and abilities of students, restoring their strength and strengthening health, meeting the needs for knowledge, communication and practical activities in the process of extracurricular educational work carried out in students’ free time is updated. Emphasis is placed on taking into account the specifics of a general education organization located in rural areas. In this regard, the practicability of involving parents in joint work with children, cooperation between teachers and parents, and providing students with significant independence in the process of extracurricular work (while the teacher uses various forms and methods of education) are argued. The article recommends the wide use of local history material in preparation of educational events. It is argued that the educational effect of the event will be more if the child himself shows personal interest and attention to it, creativity and fiction. Considering rural school, a preschool educational organization and a cultural center as a single center for the cultural life of the village, the authors analyze the difficulties that reduce the effectiveness of extracurricular work in rural school: conducting educational measures of adversarial nature in the absence of parallel classes, poor material and technical support, insufficient equipment of the school with modern equipment, etc. The article emphasizes that the rural teacher should devote a significant place in his work to creating educational situations, focusing on the individual characteristics of students, determining the sequence of actions when including children in socially significant activities and distributing roles taking into account the wishes and capabilities of everyone, which is a prerequisite for improving extracurricular activities in educational organizations in rural areas.

In 1947, a ghastly incident occurred in the Indian Sub-continent known as Partition of India under which two new countries India and Pakistan came into existence. And for these countries the incident proved to be the most atrocious and catastrophic incident in human history due to the occurrence of incessant robbery, kidnapping, rape and murder. Since then, Partition of India has been the most gruesome and ugly past of Indian history which puts the nation to shame whenever remembered or discussed. The partition and the associated bloody riots compelled many creative minds to create literary pieces capturing the inhuman acts of murder and brutal slaughter on both sides. The trauma of partition and agony experienced by the people of Indian Sub-continent found its voice in the literature of Partition written by various writers of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh in different languages. While some creations depicted the massacres during the refugee migration, others concentrated on the aftermath of the partition in terms of difficulties faced by the refugees on both sides of the border. Even now, after more than 75 years of partition, works of fiction and films are made that relate to the events of partition. A few literatures describing the human cost of independence and partition are ‘Train to Pakistan’ by Khushwant Singh, ‘Toba Tek Singh’ by Saadat Hassan Manto, ‘Tamas’ by Bhisham Sahni, and ‘Midnight’s Children’ by Salman Rushdi. The present paper deals with the sensitive story picked from a Punjabi novel ‘Pinjar’ written by Amrita Pritam. Amrita is a prominent writer from Punjab who has provided an avid expression of the lives and experiences of women during Partition in many of her poems and novels. Pinjar is an appalling and petrifying story of a Hindu Girl who is kidnapped by a Muslim young man who marries her. In the course of events the girl again gets a chance to meet her family and re-unite which she is compelled to refuse as her parents denied accepting her saying that she has been defiled by a non-Hindu. The novel, in its flow of narration, unfolds the harrowing journey of innocent females whose whole life is rendered shattered due to a single episode called ‘partition’.

The child must be in a family whose parents voluntarily fulfill their responsibilities for its upbringing. However, the right to custody of children and parental responsibilities are sacred and inviolable. Ensuring a proper standard of living, nutrition and education for children is not always correctly implemented in our country. The obligation of parents to maintain their children arises from a court decision or agreement between parents . Few unscrupulous parents try to avoid the court's liability for alimony payments, resorting to these techniques,For example: avoiding formal employment or getting a minimum wage. Expenses, transfer of property that can be levied, concealment of the Contractor, travel abroad, etc. Non-universal Demographic agreement between parents on the payment of alimony, in recent years, in order to strengthen the protection of children's rights to proper custody, the IC of Ukraine has undergone fundamental changes in the supervision of alimony obligations. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a scientific analysis of the new legislation. It provides for the obligation of parents to maintain their children. These issues are mainly related to the minimum guaranteed amount of alimony and the recommended minimum amount of alimony, the circumstances listed. The court takes these factors into account when determining the amount of alimony and the amount of income. Principals and single parents were interviewed and surveyed in one midwestern state to determine areas of needed program development. Principals felt that schools were more effective than parents in responding to the needs of these children for stability, social acceptance, parental involvement, and adult attention. While principals felt specific approaches were effective, parents wanted a comprehensive response to their children's complex needs.

Background & aims Anecdotal evidence suggests that individuals with autism spectrum disorder prefer non-fiction books over fiction books. The current study was the first to investigate parent-reports of children with autism spectrum disorder’s fiction and non-fiction book preferences and whether these relate to individual differences in social communication, oral language, and/or reading abilities. Method Children (ages 8–14 years, M = 10.89, SD = 1.17) with autism spectrum disorder diagnoses ( n = 19) and typically developing peers ( n = 21) participated. Children completed standardized measures of social communication, oral language, and reading abilities. Parents reported children’s current favorite book, and from these responses, we coded children’s fiction versus non-fiction book preferences. Main contribution Contrary to anecdotal evidence, children with autism spectrum disorder preferred fiction similar to their typically developing peers. Fiction versus non-fiction book preference was significantly related to social communication abilities across both groups. Children’s oral language and reading abilities were related, as expected, but the evidence for a relationship between social communication and reading comprehension was mixed. Conclusions This study provides preliminary evidence supporting the association of social communication in fiction versus non-fiction book preference, which may be related to children’s comprehension and support the theoretical role of social communication knowledge in narrative/fiction. Implications It should not be assumed that all children with autism spectrum disorder prefer expository/non-fiction or do not read narrative/fiction. Children who prefer non-fiction may need additional social communication knowledge support to improve their understanding of narrative fiction.

AbstractOne way in which information about the unknown is socialized to children is through adult testimony. Sharing false testimony about others with children may foster inaccurate perceptions and may result in prejudicially based divisions amongst children. As part of a larger study, mothers were instructed to read and discuss an illustrated story about Arab-Muslim refugees from Syria with their 6- to 8-year-olds (n = 31). Parent-child discourse during two pages of this book was examined for how mothers used Islam as a talking point. Results indicated that only 50% of mothers and 13% of children shared accurate testimony about Islam. However, while 35% of children admitted uncertainty in their knowledge, only 3% of mothers admitted uncertainty. These results highlight the importance of parents sharing the confidence in their knowledge. If parents teach inaccurate information about other religions, it may create a greater divide between children of different religious backgrounds.

The study aimed at identifying whether there exists a language shift towards English among Saudi children studying in international schools in Riyadh. This was approached through investigating the code choices they prefer to use in different life domains (such as the home domain (parents and siblings), school domain (friends and teachers), neighbors, and relatives…etc.), i.e. from their parents' perspectives. To achieve the aim of the study, a descriptive survey approach was followed, where the study sample consisted of (382) parents. The questionnaire was also used as a data collection tool. The results revealed that Saudi children studying in international schools in Riyadh showed different tendencies towards language choice, while communicating in different domains. More specifically, they tend to use English more than their native tongue (Arabic) in daily spontaneous communication. The findings thus indicate that the children are in fact going through early stages of Language Shift.

This collaborative narrative examines the personal experiences of children coming out to their parents as transgender. One author uses autoethnography to share her experience from a parent’s perspective, and one author utilizes fiction to relay his experience from the child’s perspective. This collaboration revealed that not all parents react negatively, and even those who may respond negatively when they first learn of their child’s gender identity may grow to understand and accept them over time; empathy toward the other will help both sides in these difficult contexts. In addition to the therapeutic benefits of writing, writing as a tool offers children a helpful conduit for approaching these difficult discussions; and fiction writing, in particular, can offer children the distance to help them feel safe in approaching a sensitive subject and allow them the freedom to imagine positive futures living as their authentic selves.

This paper discusses the concept of fantasy. There is much in the word of fiction today so that the number of writers on imagination is increasing. After people have come to realize that romance is serving as much as a sea in the intellectual development of children, most of them have started to encourage their children to like more reading fantasy books. Some parents have even made it a great deal by deciding to build a small home library of fantasy books for children. The paper’s purpose is to discuss the role of fantasy literature in children’s intellectual development by including different forms of fantasy and its various advantages. The latter include creativity, entertainment, imagination and language skills improvement, the schematic knowledge, enjoyment, strategies applied for problem-solving, knowing the do’s and don’ts of the society, etc. Some Critics have made assertions on children’s ways of learning. This paper incorporates some of the claims and discusses them with some excerpts of illustrative stories related to fantasy.Enhanced by the fact that fantasy is the roadmap to the child thinking ability development, the paper will finally show why parents should motivate their children to get interested in fiction, which has a lot to do with children’s learning process.

Background and aims Children’s early interactions with books are important for fostering development of oral language and emergent literacy skills. It is not known whether children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder show different preferences for text types in the home environment prior to school entry. The current study aimed to: (i) investigate parent-reports of the favourite books of their children with autism spectrum disorder compared to typically developing children and (ii) identify whether there are differences in the reasons why books were preferred across the two groups. Methods Participants included children (aged 26–70 months) with autism spectrum disorder ( n = 41) and typically developing peers ( n = 164). Parent-reports of their child’s current favourite book/s were coded as fiction versus non-fiction and also category type. Parents also reported why the book was considered a favourite and this was coded. Results There were no differences between groups for fiction versus non-fiction, with both groups preferring fiction (>95% of responses). A strong category preference for animal topics across both groups was present. Significant group differences were found when asked to select specific reasons for favourite book preferences. Conclusions This study provides preliminary evidence of similarities between preschool children with autism spectrum disorder and typically developing peers’ preferences for fiction books during the early years. Implications It should not be assumed that children with autism spectrum disorder have different preferences for book types compared to typically developing children in the early years of development. Providing preschoolers with a range of book types during the preschool years will help to facilitate early language and emergent literacy skills.

Children raised by single parents face many challenges that can be social, psychological, cultural or economic, resulting in erratic behavior. This study explored the dilemmas of children raised by single parents in the Kingdom of Eswatini in Lubombo region. The study was undertaken in a transformative research paradigm, and the Participatory Action Learning Action Research (PALAR) design was used. This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to get views from single parents and children in single parenting, and the data were analysed through thematic analysis. A sample of six single parents and six children raised by single parents were selected from the Lubombo region using the purposive sampling technique. Informed by Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, the findings of the study revealed that single parenting led to children feeling abandoned, rejected and unloved by the absent parent, which had social and psychological effects on the children. The study concluded that children raised by single parents face psychological, social, economic and cultural challenges. Most of them are fixated and need counselling. The study suggests, for Eswatini, that the Home Affairs Department, in partnership with relevant non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should make psychological counselling readily available for single parents and their children.

The issue of reading interest formation among older preschoolers is relevant due to the general decline in reading culture in modern society, the underestimation of the fiction role by parents and the introduction of children to reading for their intellectual, social, artistic, aesthetic and psycho-emotional development. Parents stopped reading books to their children, using electronic audiovisual products as a means of children's knowledge of the world around them; as a result, modern preschoolers develop outside the context of book culture, which negatively affects their mental development. The aim of the study is to develop organizational and pedagogical conditions that ensure formation effectiveness of reader interest in fiction among older preschoolers based on the scientific sources analysis. Reader interest in senior preschool age is a dynamic personal formation, which manifests itself in the child's conscious and selective attitude in choosing the types and genres of works of fiction to meet cognitive and artistic and aesthetic needs. The effectiveness of the reader interest formation among 7-year-old children will be facilitated by the implementation of complex with organizational and pedagogical conditions in the preschool institution educational practice. The complex includes development of a model and program of pedagogical support for reader interest formation in fiction among older preschoolers, social partnership relations with a children's library, developing subject-spatial environment in the preschool group, enriched with didactic and subject material focused on the literary development of older preschoolers.

A civilized society sets requirements for the democratic coexistence of persons who possess moral values, benefit society and develop their own abilities. An important characteristic of a person is responsibility, which is formed as a result of the integration of thought processes, social norms, personal attitude in solving dilemmas in life. Responsibility as a child’s conscious behavior in relation to people and nature begins to develop in the period of older preschool age. Independent thinking in judgments acquires logic and a personal attitude to reality. In the pursuit of social activity, children imitate the behavior of significant adults, heroes of their favorite films, cartoons, and works of art. Educators and parents are faced with the task of developing the philosophy of children's worldview through conducting moral and ethical discussions. Our survey of children’ parents with special needs showed a low level of parents’ and educators’ attention to the education of responsibility (4%) compared to other personal qualities (discipline ‑ 18%, ability to adapt to life ‑ 20%, respect to parents ‑ 14%, etc.). This indicates the need to conduct special educational activities that compensate for gaps in value orientations. Emphasis has also been shifted in the education of executive responsibility as opposed to initiative responsibility (75% : 25%), which gives reasons to look for new ways in organizing the interaction of participants in the educational process, to use moral and ethical conversations, to study educational children's literature, in particular, the works of V. Sukhomlynskyi (2018), which became the goal of our scientific exploration. Examples of artistic works and developed problematic questions and tasks for educational work with children of older preschool age in the conditions of a preschool education institution are given.

Independence is an important thing that needs to be instilled in children from an early age. With children who are accustomed to being independent since childhood, they will carry over into adulthood. Independence in children can be influenced by parenting applied by parents. Single parents have multiple roles that make it difficult to share time with their children. With the use of inappropriate parenting by single parents, it can lead to less than optimal independence in children. This study aims to describe the independence of early childhood with democratic single parent parenting. This study uses a qualitative approach, which was carried out in Segati Village with 3 single mothers with 5 year old children as informants. This research data collection using documentation, observation and interviews. Data analysis with the stages of reduction, presentation and conclusion. The study examined single parenting and its effects on the development of children in Nigeria. The study revealed that single parents/solo parents lack partners to share financial and child care responsibilities with. The study also unveiled that finance is the major problems encountered by the majority of single parents. This is because majority of the single parents find it difficult to meet the basic needs of their children such as food, clothing, school fees, and other personal needs. This also accounts for the difficult in maintaining discipline among their children. The study concluded that majority of single parents are faced with economic, emotional and social problems which translate into greater risk of embarking on dangerous behaviors by their children such as drugs, alcohol and criminal activities. A secondary source of data collection was used for this study. The study recommends that government should create more job opportunities and increase wages as such single parent can also benefit in order to cope with the difficulties they face. Also single parents should engage in savings such as local contribution, that no matter how small their income may be, they may be able to satisfy the required needs of their household, which to some extent will also curtail the crime rate in our dear macrocosm by the children of solo parents.

Little is known about the living arrangements of first- and second-generation immigrant children. Using data from the Current Population Survey and a multivariate approach, I compared living arrangements of immigrant children to U.S.-born white children with U.S.-born parents. Findings show, except for foreign-born black and some Hispanic children, that foreign-born children lived with married parents more frequently than did U.S.-born white children with U.S.-born parents. However, by the third generation, a pattern emerged showing a decline in living with married parents among some immigrant children and a rise in living with single parents. The noticeable “downward assimilation” among some second- and third-generation immigrant children fits a theory of segmented assimilation and is concerning because single-parent families confront more social problems and sociodemographic risks.

The results showed that the type of democratic parenting performed by single parents was more dominant in supporting children's formal education. Meanwhile, authoritarian and permissive parenting styles still support children's education, but they are lower than democratic parenting. In democratic parenting, parents always control the development of their children, especially in terms of education. Parents always give their best for the development of their children's education both material issues such as school supplies, pocket money and others, as well as in material such as motivation, encouragement and praise. In authoritarian parenting, the attitude of parents is very strict towards their children, especially in terms of their education and if the children violate the rules that have been made such as laziness to learn, playfulness and decreased reports, the parents give their children punishment so that the children -the children prioritize their education. In Primitive parenting, parents act permissively. Children are always given freedom in their children's lives, including in their education.Key Words: parenting style of single parent; formal education; children

Nutritional knowledge is an important cognitive facilitator that potentially helps children to follow a healthy diet. Two main information agents influence children’s development of nutritional knowledge: the media and their parents. While a high amount of media consumption potentially decreases children’s nutritional knowledge, parents may shape the amount of information children can gather about nutrition through their food-related mediation styles. In addition, children’s individual preconditions predict how children can process the provided nutritional information. This two-wave panel study with children (N = 719; 5–11 years) and their parents (N = 719) investigated the main effects and interplay of children’s amount of media consumption and their parents’ food-related mediation styles by performing linear regression analysis. Children’s individual preconditions were also considered. We measured children’s self-reported amount of media consumption, children’s age, sex, weight, and height (BMI). Additionally, in a parent survey we asked parents about how they communicate their rules about eating while especially focusing on active and restrictive food rule communication styles. As a dependent measure, we examined children’s nutritional knowledge at Time 1 and 2. The results show that the amount of media consumption has a negative effect on children’s nutritional knowledge over time. Parents’ restrictive or active food-related mediation asserted no main effects and could not lever out the negative effect of the amount of media consumption. Therefore, we argue that parents should limit children’s amount of media consumption to avoid the manifestation of misperceptions about nutrition.

A sample of parents in Saudi Arabia was surveyed to find out the reading technologies that children under the age of 12 use, children’s digital reading habits and interests, parents’ roles in encouraging the children to read digitally, the effects of digital reading on children’s reading ability, and to compare digital reading before, during and after the Pandemic. Survey results showed that all the children in the sample use a smart phone to access apps, games, cartoons, and YouTube videos. About 41% use an iPad or tablet and few use their parents or older siblings’ laptops. None of the children in the sample uses an e-reader such as Kindle. 5% do not like to use an iPad/tablet and prefer to use their parents’ smart phones. Children below the age of 6 use touch screen devices in reading the English and Arabic letters, numeracy and words. They enjoy reading on touch screens. 36% of the children in grades 1-3 use touch screen devices in learning to read and 64% use them for games and entertainment. Children in grades 4-6 mainly use touch screen devices to play games, soccer, car races and watch movies mostly in English and do not use those devices for reading purposes. Older children feel that educational and language learning and reading apps are boring. During the pandemic, children used technology intensively due to remote teaching and learning, i.e., more than before and after the Pandemic. About half of the parents do not share, nor supervise reading from touch screen devices with their children whether during, before or after the pandemic. Despite the advancements in digital reading, most parents and children in Saudi Arabia still prefer print books and stories. Mobile audiobooks, electronic reading games, storybooks, picture books and glossy magazines, reading lessons with a digital, human-like character, WhatsApp remote reading, online book clubs, and children's digital libraries are not used. Therefore, this study recommends the integration of digital reading in the school curriculum, raising parents and teachers’ awareness of digital reading devices, reading apps and websites and designing mobile reading apps with interactive features to motivate older children to read Arabic fiction and short stories.

Objective: This research aims to examine the intricate dynamics of single-parent households in Indonesia, specifically focusing on the role of fathers as single parents, which is shaped by their work responsibilities and duties before and after divorce. Method: This research utilizes a qualitative phenomenological methodology, employing snowball sampling to collect data through in-depth interviews. An interview was done to collect data on the father's pre-divorce experience, encompassing his initial parental role, changes in his obligations after the divorce, his level of involvement in raising the kid, and the difficulties he faced. Results and Discussion: The research shows that fathers act as breadwinners, caregivers, mentors and protectors of children. Challenges include managing time between work and children, educating them in worship, and overcoming social expectations and shyness. This research underlines the hopes of single fathers for their children to grow up independent, intelligent and responsible. This research reveals the diversity of fathers' roles as single parents, influenced by work, reasons for divorce, and roles before and after divorce. Fathers face embarrassment, difficulties caring for children, working outside the city, and leaving children alone. Although complex, the role of single fathers shows a positive impact on children's academic performance. Fathers hope to see his children succeed and love their father. Originality/Value: This research offers a comprehensive examination of the father's role as the exclusive caregiver in the upbringing of children.

There is a paucity of explicit literature outlining methods for single-interview studies with children, and almost none have focused on engaging children with disabilities. Drawing from a pilot study, we address these gaps by describing innovative techniques, strategies, and methods for engaging children and youth with disabilities in a single qualitative interview. In the study, we explored the beliefs, assumptions, and experiences of children and youth with cerebral palsy and their parents regarding the importance of walking. We describe three key aspects of our child-interview methodological approach: collaboration with parents, a toolkit of customizable interview techniques, and strategies to consider the power differential inherent in child–researcher interactions. Examples from our research illustrate what worked well and what was less successful. Researchers can optimize single interviews with children with disabilities by collaborating with family members and by preparing a toolkit of customizable interview techniques.
