Streszczenie:
This essay reviews the evidence regarding the impact of childhood abuse (e.g., physical, sexual, psychological, maltreatment, and neglect) on long-term outcomes, such as violence, criminality, abuse, mental health problems, and physical health problems, in adolescence and adulthood. Overall, childhood abuse is highly detrimental to these outcomes, with evidence suggesting that “more is worse” when it comes to its lasting effects. This essay also briefly reviews the theoretical bases upon which the research regarding childhood abuse and later outcomes is founded and discusses the evidence regarding moderating variables, such as age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of the theoretical and methodological limitations in the research and suggests avenues for future endeavors to consider.

Streszczenie:
The parenting a child receives has profound long-term impacts on that child’s life. The rates of child maltreatment globally are high. Evidence-based parenting programs have been demonstrated to have positive impacts on improving parenting style, whilst reducing childhood social, emotional, and behavioral problems. However, uptake in parenting interventions remains low, and governments have been reluctant to provide evidence-based parenting on a wide scale. This chapter aims, first, to show how the adoption of a public health approach to parenting can be considered wide-scale compassionate action, one that will reduce rates of child maltreatment (suffering), which is also cost-effective. Second, I argue that the next generation of evidence-based parenting programs need to be grounded in evolved, caring motivational systems and affiliative emotion processing, which requires an understanding of the evolved processes involved in parent–offspring caring and brain functioning. This new approach to parenting, “compassion-focused parenting,” will be described.

Streszczenie:
Despite its prevalence, the etiology and pathogenesis of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) has yet to be fully elucidated due to this disorder’s complexity. Research into causal and contributory factors has been limited, yet there is emerging evidence that environmental factors play an important role and, furthermore, that specific environmental factors may be characteristic of BDD and possibly contribute to the development and maintenance of the disorder. Sociocultural pressures to achieve physical perfection; factors such as teasing/bullying, abuse, and perceived childhood maltreatment; heighted aesthetic sensitivity; and possibly certain personality traits may all be important. Factors such as these, coupled with biologic factors that include genetic heritability and deficits in visual processing, may significantly contribute to both the development and maintenance of the disorder. More research is needed to understand the specific factors that lead to this disorder to better assist with the development of evidence-based psychological treatment.

Streszczenie:
Child abuse and neglect constitute a long-standing worldwide epidemic. Millions of cases of abuse and neglect are reported every year. As mandated reporters, clinicians are legally bound to recognize and report, but not prove, suspected acts of child maltreatment. Child protection agencies investigate the validity of the allegations. Only trained professionals should explore and gather evidence for suspected abuse or neglect of a child, while the clinician who has fulfilled his or her duty as a mandated reporter continues to provide clinical care for the child. Young children also benefit from forensic examinations by interviewers who are trained in early childhood development and age-appropriate interview techniques, such as open-ended questions, that minimize suggestion and allow children to freely recall the alleged offender’s behavior. A clear understanding of professional duties and responsibilities will promote the just adjudication of offenders and the well-being of children.

Streszczenie:
This comprehensive, 51-chapter handbook presents recent advances in the expression, etiology, assessment, and treatment of child and adolescent psychiatric disorders and related problems from a developmental psychopathology perspective. Following a broad conceptual overview of this area of clinical research and practice, assessment and treatment practices are examined for specific DSM-5 disorders and other nondiagnostic but nonetheless significant problems in childhood and adolescence, including the maltreatment of youth, children of divorce, children with incarcerated parents, nonsuicidal self-injury among youth, youth with suicidal thoughts and behavior, children who bully or are bullied, youth with medical conditions, and youth with neurobehavioral disorders. The practice of clinical child and adolescent psychology is then explored in diverse settings, including school, community mental health, outpatient, inpatient, forensic, and private practice settings. Implementation of evidence-based practices in these settings may help close the oft-cited gap between research and clinical practice. Finally, timely topics are presented that will likely influence mental health care and research with children and adolescents over the next couple of decades, namely, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying psychopathology and treatment, electronic and telehealth delivery developments, cognitive training methods and technology, transdiagnostic approaches, and pediatric psychopharmacology. The volume concludes with special attention to the dissemination of evidence-based assessment and treatment practices.
