Streszczenie:
Only a handful of macro-level studies of homicide clearance exist, and the impact of community characteristics is mixed. In addition, community members are critical to clearances, but the willingness of residents to unite for the collective goal of aiding in investigations (via collective efficacy) remains to be tested. Combining data from the Chicago Police Department, Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN), and U.S. Census, we estimate the effect of collective efficacy on homicide clearances in Chicago neighborhoods, while taking into account neighborhood characteristics and case composition. Results indicate that economic disadvantage, residential stability, and victimization significantly decrease homicides clearances, while collective efficacy increases clearances.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Carl Dawson's development as a sociologist reflected a general trend in sociology's evolution out of theology and social work. Trained as a minister, Dawson rejected the religious vocation at some point after World War I to become a social scientist. Appointed to McGill in 1922, he strove to establish research as the foundation for understanding society, questioning the efficacy of social reform. His convictions stemmed from his Maritime Baptist background, wartime experience and education at the University of Chicago. In 1914, Dawson left the Maritime region where he had been born and raised to attend the divinity school of the University of Chicago. In so doing, he was following a well travelled route: poor economic conditions drove numerous people out of the Maritime provinces between 1910 and 1929, and the lack of doctoral programmes in Canada compelled many students to attend American graduate schools. With its strong reputation for research, the University of Chicago was a popular choice. Its divinity school, a Baptist stronghold, was attractive to adherents of that faith. That a number of its faculty members were Canadians also attested to the institutional ties that had long linked Baptists in Canada and the northern United States. In 1918, Dawson recessed from graduate studies for war service and resumed his studies in 1919 - his interests now sharply turned towards sociology. This shift was partly influenced by the Chicago divinity school's close ties with the sociology department - a result of the historic link between the social gospel and sociology generally - but was also the product of the school's position as a leader in liberal and radical theological doctrine. The modernists within the institution stressed that all studies of society, including religion, must accord with modern empirical methods. That, in addition to their acceptance of the ideas of John Dewey and the Chicago School regarding social development, led some to the conclusion that religion itself was but a form of group behaviour. In reflecting all those currents of thought, Dawson's Ph.D. thesis, "The Social Nature of Knowledge," hinted at the reasons for his departure from the ministry for a career in social science. Showing that all culture and knowledge, morals and ideals had social origins, Dawson concluded that even fact was not fixed truth but represented the decision of individuals to agree on certain points and issues. This explained why Dawson believed that research - a collection of facts - would aid in understanding society. The thesis was also marked by an opposition to social action, stemming from what Dawson had witnessed during the war and the upheaval which followed, but also, it must be argued, from the antiauthoritarian and antihierarchial strain in the Baptist faith. The fact that Dawson eschewed social action in much the same way as did Harold Innis, another Baptist educated at Chicago, suggests that there exists a tradition in the development of Canadian social science quite different from the one which Brian McKillop has traced in A Disciplined Intelligence, and it was that legacy which Dawson's brand of sociology represented.

Streszczenie:
Bob Lucas is widely regarded as the most influential economist of the past 25–30 years, at least among those working in macro and monetary economics. His work provided the primary stimulus for a drastic overhaul and revitalization of that broad area, an overhaul that featured the ascendance of rational expectations, the emergence of a coherent equilibrium theory of cyclical fluctuations, and specification of the analytical ingredients necessary for the use of econometric models in policy design. These are the accomplishments for which he was awarded the 1995 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. In addition, he has made outstanding contributions on other topics—enough, arguably, for another prize. Among these are seminal writings on asset pricing, economic growth and development, exchange-rate determination, optimal fiscal and inflation policy, and tools for the analysis of dynamic recursive models.Clearly, Bob Lucas is very much a University of Chicago product; he studied there both as an undergraduate and as a Ph.D. student and has been on the faculty since 1975. Also, he has served as chairman of the Chicago Department of Economics and two terms as an editor of the Journal of Political Economy. Nevertheless, I and several colleagues at Carnegie Mellon like to point out that Bob was a professor here in the Graduate School of Industrial Administration from 1963 until 1974, during which time he conducted and published the central portions of the work for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. Consequently, I could not resist asking Bob a few questions about his GSIA years in the interview. Many researchers in the economics profession have been impressed and inspired by Lucas's technical skills, but the clarity and elegance of his writing style also deserve mention, plus his choice of research topics. The latter is reflective of Bob's utter seriousness of purpose. Each of his projects attacks a problem that is simultaneously of genuine theoretical interest and also of considerable importance from the perspective of economic policy. There is nothing frivolous about Lucas's research, as he had occasion to remind me during our interview. As is well known to those who have been around him, Bob Lucas is a person who never uses three words when one will suffice—but that one will usually be carefully chosen. This characteristic shows up in the interview below. As a departure from standard MD Interview practice, and with the Editor's permission, this interview was conducted at a distance—i.e., via mail and e-mail. It yielded a smaller number of pages than have previous interviews, but I think that readers will find them stimulating. The process of obtaining them was somewhat challenging but highly informative and thoroughly enjoyable for me.

Background & objective: Antibiotics are considered among the most commonly sold drug classes in the developing countries. The irrational and overuse of antibiotics result not only in the emergence of resistant bacterial strains but also adverse reactions and economic burden on national health system. This study was carried out with the focus to assess the awareness, attitude and practice of patients visiting Outpatient Department (OPD) of Bangladesh Institute of Research & Development in Endocrine & Metabolism (BIRDEM) General Hospital. towards antibiotic usage and development of its resistance Methods: This cross-sectional study was done in the OPD of BIRDEM General Hospital from June 2017 to July 2017. Patients presented at OPD were selected by convenient sampling. The total number of respondents was 100. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect information from the respondents. Data were analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20.0 and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: Of all the participants who took part in the study, 46% had no knowledge and 36% were unaware of ill-effects of antibiotic resistance. Over half (54%) of the patients showed confusion between antibiotic and antiviral drugs. Investigating patients’ practice about antibiotics revealed that 50% patients used to take incomplete antibiotic course and 30% patients shared their antibiotics with other sick family members. During emergencies, 16% patients used the previously left-over antibiotics without seeing the expiry date. Nearly half (46%) of the patients had a practice of taking previously prescribed antibiotic again for the similar nature of illness without consulting a doctor, 6% patients sought antibiotics prescription whenever they consult a doctor. Conclusion: Although the results of this study cannot be generalized to all adult Bangladeshi, indiscriminate use of antibiotic and unawareness of antibiotic resistance and poor attitude towards the antibiotic usage can be a concern for antibiotic resistance in Bangladesh. It highlights the need of educational interventions to increase awareness of people about the consequences of antibiotic misuse and also to develop healthy attitude to practice antibiotic usage. Streszczenie:
The H2NEW consortium is a Department of Energy (DOE)-Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Office (HFTO) funded effort with a vision to enable $2/kg hydrogen production by 2025 through large-scale production of hydrogen by either low-temperature electrolysis (LTE) or high-temperature electrolysis (HTE). The H2NEW consortia was established in October 2020 and has seen a recent increase in emphasis and expansion of scope with the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and the focus on a Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis Program, a $1B commitment over 5 years from the US government. This has resulted in a series of workshops, supported by members of H2NEW, on topics relevant to electrolysis including liquid alkaline electrolysis,[1] high temperature electrolysis,[2] and manufacturing and advanced materials for polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyzers.[3] H2NEW focuses on better understanding the cost, performance, and durability tradeoffs of electrolysis systems through an increased understanding of the factors that contribute to these metrics. This includes the impact of operating conditions, materials selection, and component design and integration. Techno-economic and system analysis help provide guidance for the primary components of interest based on cost and trade-offs associated with electricity prices as they relate to hydrogen levelized costs. The consortium has a focus on durability without compromising efficiency while dramatically reducing costs. While the efforts of H2NEW have historically covered polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and oxide ion conducting solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC), recently these efforts have expanded to also include liquid alkaline electrolysis. An overview of the scope of H2NEW and analysis efforts that relate to all electrolysis technologies will be highlighted in this talk, but a focus will be placed on scientific advances made in PEM technology. For example, H2NEW has made significant progress in the areas of anode stability including investigations of operating strategies and Ir stability under various operating conditions; quantification of performance metrics including hydrogen crossover under operation; processing of inks and electrodes; and development and characterization of porous transport layers. These topics and highlights of research advances will be presented. Acknowledgements This presentation is a summary of the research efforts of numerous H2NEW researchers. The prevailing opinion in Lithuania is that the country‘s economic growth was determined by the inflow of foreign direct investments (FDI). Their influence on the Lithuanian economy remains unquestionable, however, there is a tendency to overestimate their impact, while otherfactors are under-estimated or ignored completely when conclusions on their influence on the country‘s economy are drawn. Based on the data of the Department of Statistics of Lithuania, Eurostat, other agencies and the analysis of the research of Lithuanian and foreign academics on FDI, and the impact of the innovations on the country‘s economy, the given study presents the analysis of the three main channels for the technological and innovation diffusion, which have exercised a decisive influence on the economic development in Lithuania over the last decade. They are foreign direct investments, international trade, and the country‘s knowledge capital. These diffusion channels were considerably important in the transition period, however, the creation of original knowledge and innovations, or the creative application of the technology created in other countries and application of the knowledge gained abroad was utilised least. In Lithuania,, the creation and adoption of extended modifying innovations and technologies was dominant in terms of innovation modes, while the strategic innovations were created by only 1 percent of Lithuanian enterprises . A comparative analysis of surveys, statistical data, and academic studies was conducted and lead to the conclusion that the main technology and innovation diffusion channel, as well as the main driving force behind Lithuania‘s economy during the transitional period of 1996–2007 was neithert FDI nor the scientific potential of the country, but rather the international trade. In addition, the data suggests that the country‘s scientific potential was ill-prepared for the changes brought on by globalisation and had a very weak impact on the growth of the Lithuanian economy and the economy‘s technological and innovational reorientation, which led to the enterprises searching for other possible sources of innovation. The model for the creation of innovation eacompassing state institutions, the science community and enterprises was not functional during the said period in Lithuania.

Streszczenie:
Chapter 5 examines how Samuel P. Hayes, Jr., an early Point Four official who later helped design the Peace Corps, tried to “use” the University of Michigan to establish a program of multidisciplinary organized research on economic development, the Center for Research on Economic Development (CRED). The resistance he encountered from university administrators and economics department colleagues suggests that traditional academic norms did not always yield completely to interdisciplinary organized research. Yet the establishment of CRED, which had parallels at the University of Chicago, Vanderbilt, and Yale, suggests the importance of economic development as a focus for organized research in the instrumental university. This chapter also provides an account of the new subfield of development economics and of the relationship between the economics discipline and the behavioral science paradigm.
