On 27 April 2022 the Divisional Court of the Queen's Bench Division of the High Court ruled that the Government committed an unlawful act in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic when it directed that thousands of hospital patients should be transferred to care homes without being checked for infection. This direction was a response to the massive pressure on hospital beds caused by the unexpected onset and rapid spread of the virus. John Finch examines the circumstances which led to this decision being made and the reasons why the courts ruled it as unlawful.

This reply to the Symposium on Stefano Guzzini (ed.) The return of geopolitics in Europe?, answers the criticisms by John Agnew, Jeffrey Checkel, Dan Deudney and Jennifer Mitzen. It justifies (1) its specific definition and critique of geopolitics as a theory – and not just a foreign policy strategy; (2) its proposed interpretivist process tracing; (3) the role of mechanisms in constructivist theorizing and foreign policy theory; and (4) its usage of non-Humean causality in the analysis of multiple parallel processes and their interaction. At the same time, it develops the logic of the book’s main mechanism of foreign policy identity crisis reduction.

Streszczenie:
The British Qurʾānic researcher, John Burton, believes that the extant Qurʾān was organised and approved by the Prophet of Islam himself. The role of the Prophet of Islam in collection and promulgation of the Qurʾān was negated in favour of the concept of abrogation. Abrogation of both wording and ruling and abrogation of wording, but not of ruling are ideas fabricated by Muslim jurists attempting to base their juristic decrees on the Qurʾān even though the Qurʾānic text lacked any reference to such decrees. If the Prophet of Islam had, in fact, edited, checked, and promulgated the Qurʾānic document, jurists could no longer speak of such omissions or abrogations of texts in the extant Qurʾān. Their solution was to falsify traditions in order to exclude the Prophet of Islam from the history of collection of the Qurʾānic text, suspending such collection until after his death. John Burton’s treatment of the relationship between abrogation and collection of the Qurʾān demonstrates the rigour of his research in Qurʾānic and Islamic sources. On the basis of his book, traditions dealing with collection of the Qurʾān developed in the third century AH. One thing he did not consider was whether historical evidence confirms his depiction of the development of these traditions.

Abstract In Test 1 Temik and Thimet were applied to 6-row, irrigated plots (38 inch row widths), clay loam soil type, which accounted for approximately 0.3 acres each, replicated 4 times on 8 Mar. Applications were made either at-planting with a John Deere Max Emerge planter/applicator and/or side-dressed at bloom stage with a Gandy brand insecticide applicator. In Test 2 Temik at the rate of 3.0 lb(AI)/acre was applied side-dress at bloom. Gandy brand insecticide applicators were used to apply the material to the 4 replicated plots arranged in a randomized complete block. SPW (adults, eggs, immatures, and pupae) on leaves were checked once per wk and counts were based on a laboratory examination of 3 to 5 leaves per plot, 4th leaf from the top of each randomly-selected sampled plant. All counts were recorded as insects per leaf. Sidedress applications were made on May 21, followed 7 days later with an infurrow irrigation of approximately 4 acre-inches of water. Yields were machine harvested with a John Deere brand 2 row spindle harvester. Subsamples were extracted from each plot and ginned for fiber analysis and percent lint. Data were analyzed using Proc Anova of PC-SAS and mean separations with Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Imagine that you won a Nobel Prize at age 37. That you've published some 400 papers on genetics and the human immune system. That you've built from scratch a highly respected scientific research center, the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge, Mass. And then imagine that you wake up one morning and read in the hometown paper that you're accused of what "appears to be fraud and misrepresentation." The accusation is from a "Pete Stockton," whom you've never met, but who the paper says is a "staff member for Rep. John Dingell." That's more or less what happened to David Baltimore a year ago. His experience since has taken him into the Kafka maw of "congressional oversight," Dingell-style. Readers of this space will recall that the last time we checked with Congress's grand inquisitor, Chairman Dingell was retreating from a botched attempt to smear a former federal prosecutor. Now he's assailing Dr. Baltimore and, to make the effort really worthwhile, American science. The first time I met John Dingell I must admit to coming away with some respect for his intelligence and rough-hewn candor. But the more I've watched him and his investigators at work, the more it's clear that they are manning a runaway train. The arrogance bred of unchallenged power has stripped them of self-restraint and distorted their understanding of the public good.

The study considers gold-water nanofluid flow past a porous rotating disk while accounting for prescribed heat flux and suction at the boundary layer of the disk. The physical parameters of the nanoparticle volume fraction, magnetic parameter and entropy generation are investigated and presented in this paper. The numerically solved nonlinear equations by the spectral quasilinearization technique. The main findings are presented in graphical form and discussed for variations of the flow parameters. The findings indicate that increased nanoparticle volume concentration fall in velocity but a overshoot in temperature, while enhancing the magnetic parameter is associated with reduced velocity distribution and increased skin friction. Among other findings, the results also show that increasing the Brinkman number leads to increased entropy generation but reduced Bejan number, while the Reynolds number increasing in the generation of elevated levels of entropy production. The reliability, error analysis and accuracy are checked through convergence of the method. The accuracy is further tested through a comparison of results for limiting cases with those in the literature. The findings of this study have significant applications in engineering, science and technology.

Present assessment is considered to analysis flow as well as heat characteristics of steady, thermal slip flow of three-dimensional Casson fluid embedded in a porous medium with internal heat generation. Geometry of the present analysis is linearly stretched surface. Later, all the PDEs corresponding to the study are altered to set of nonlinear equations ODEs by means of appropriate similarity transformations. An efficient numerical scheme of spectral relaxation method (SRM) is applied to solve the nonlinear ordinary system. Variations of Nusselt number, temperature, velocity, and local skin friction coefficient with fluid parameters exhibited by graphs and tables. Spectral relaxation method gives an exact convergence to the nonlinear boundary value problems compare with general methods. In this study, to improve the precision and accuracy of the SRM successive over-relaxation (SOR) strategy is utilized. Proposed method as well as outcomes is checked with the comparison. A sensible connection is acquired between the current outcomes and accessible outcomes in writing. Some of the observations are skin friction coefficient raises and velocities decreases by the magnetic field strength. Skin friction and Local Nusselt number at the surface is more pronounced for non-Newtonian case than that of Newtonian case.

On Monday 23 May 550 a directive was issued by the Emperor Justinian to John, metropolitan bishop of Anazarbus in Cilicia Secunda. Another directive, cast in corresponding terms, was sent to Cosmas, bishop of Mopsuestia (the present day Misis, seventeen miles east of Adana in southern Turkey) in the same province. ‘We indicate to your holiness”, he writes to John, ‘that you are to convene all the most-religious bishops of your synod; you are to repair to the town of Mopsuestia and make a detailed examination, with the senior men (whether clerics or laity), there established, foregathering, and learn from them whether they know the date when Theodore's name was removed from the diptychs.” If the senior persons in question do not know the answer, the fact is to be expressly recorded and the diptychs themselves are to be duly checked. Into the events leading up to this directive I will not now enter. It must suffice to recall that the setting was the so-called Three Chapters Controversy: what to do about Nestorius' precursors Theodore and Diodore, about Theodoret's writings against Cyril of Alexandria's twelve Anathematisms and the Letter of Ibas to Maris. On these matters the Council of Chalcedon had been indecisive. A hundred years after that council, it looked to many people, the emperor included, as if a few modest addenda to the council's decisions, amounting, perhaps, to nothing more than explications of its mind on Nestorius and his school, would put an end to the painful disunity of eastern Christendom.

A numerical analysis is carried out for water/Ethylene Glycol based γ Al2O3 nanofluid movement over a horizontal permeable sheet placed within a porous medium using MATLAB package Bvp4c solver. Other flow controlling conditions like Non-linear thermal radiation and uniform Magnetic field are also considered for this study. The present study is novel in terms of entropy generation and heat transfer rate investigation for mentioned fluid system in the existence of dissipation (an irreversible process) and heat generation/absorption impact. First, a mathematical pattern is prepared in the form of partial differential equations to represent the Marangoni convection flow and temperature, considering suitable boundary conditions. Using similarity parameters, we convert our mathematical model in dimensionless form and then solved it. Accuracy of obtained data is also cross-checked with another numerical technique “Runge-Kutta fourth order” along with shooting process. Using velocity and temperature fields, entropy is measured for present system. From the plots, it is noted that entropy as well as Bejan number is qualitatively changed for parameters namely, volume fraction parameter, radiation parameter, Brinkmann number and heat generation/absorption parameter. It is noticed that heat transfer rate and entropy generation number is higher for γ Al2O3-C2H6O2 nano fluid then γ Al2O3-H2O nano fluid.

Abstract In dredging applications, deep sea mining and land reclamation projects typically large amounts of sediments are transported through pipes in the form of hyper concentrated (40% sediment or more) sediment-water mixtures or slurries. In this paper it is investigated how well a generic Euler-Euler CFD-model is capable to model velocity, concentration profiles and the pressure gradient of sediment above deposition limit velocity in a pipeline. This Euler-Euler solver treats both phases as a continuum with its own momentum and continuity equations. The full kinetic theory for granular flows is accounted for (no algebraic form is used) and is combined with a buoyant k-ε turbulence model for the fluid phase. The influence of the mesh size has been checked and grid convergence is achieved. All numerical schemes used are of second-order accuracy in space. The pressure gradient was calibrated by adjusting the specularity coefficient in one calibration case and kept constant afterwards. Simulations were carried out in a wide range of slurry flow parameters, in situ volume concentration (9–42%), pipe diameter (0.05–0.90 m), particle diameter (90–440 μm) and flow velocity of (3–7 m/s). The model shows satisfactory agreement to experimental data from existing literature.

In continuing the story I have had invaluable help from the Websters’ genealogical and legal notes, which Veronica passed on to me in the summer of 1991, the year before her death; but their references have been checked, a great deal has been added, and the structure, the inferences and any errors are mine. This article, the three-dimensional flow of a casson fluid over a non-linearly stretching surface by bilateral directions along the xy-plane under boundary layer approximation is estimated. We have considered the the effect of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and the condition of natural convective over the stretching surface. Moreover, The influences of boundary condition at temperatures and nanoparticles in motion are thermophoresis, Brownian motion and radiation are considered. The method of solved equation by using the appropriate transformations, the system non-linear partial differential equations along with the boundary conditions is transformed into coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations. The numerical solutions of the mathematics formulated equations are solved by using a Runge–Kutta method with a shooting technique. The new obtained results are checked with previously published work for special cases of the problem in order to access the accuracy of numerical method and the convergency between are found to be in excellent agreement through ratified by tabular results. The emerging parameters behavior are discussed graphically in the form of velocity, temperature and fraction of nanoparticles. The number of Nusselt and number of Sherwood are calculated by numerical computations solution are expressed by tabular results. We have observed that the assignment denoted by parameters characteristics have significant effect on flow, transfer of heat and mass. Generally, The results are expressed by graphically, in tabular form and the physical aspects of the problem are determined.

The novelty of thermal conductivity is the transmission of warmth from warmer to cooler portions of a body ensuing in balancing of temperature. Owing to importance of thermal conductivity in engineering technologies, a finite difference scheme is developed to study the originality of thermal conductivity in a two-dimensional fluid motion in assembly with thermophoretic forces, variable thermal conductivity and viscous dissipative heat over a permeable horizontal surface. The thermophoretic effect is included in the concentration boundary layer equation and the formulation has adopted by Talbot-Cheng-Scheffer-Willis (1980). A suitable similarity transformation is adapted to convert the leading PDEs to non-linear ordinary differential equations in non-dimensional form. A well-tested, numerically stable finite difference scheme in connection with Bvp4c is employed via MATLAB code for the conservation of equations under the appropriate transformed boundary conditions. The impact of thermophoretic forces and thermal conductivity in presence of suction/blowing over the fluid velocity and temperature are significant. The thermal conductivity of a substantial is an important property that assistances in the growth of active boiler/refrigerating machineries. In this study, thermophoretic forces (TP) and thermal conductivity (β) enhances the fluid velocity in presence of blowing, while they declines the velocity due to suction. The validity and accuracy of the present model have been checked and found adequate agreement with the previous studies. The importance of such analysis over a horizontal surface have numerous manufacturing, industrial and engineering applications in plastic sheets extrusion, polymer extraction, blowing of glass, manufacture of paper, thermo-electronics and rubber sheets.

Abstract: This study examined the potential teacher’s opinion towards becoming a teacher. It also checked if there exists a statistically significant relationship between choice to become a teacher and gender, or performance, or family profession. It was mixed quantitative-qualitative in its approach. Grade 12 students in Addis Ababa were the data sources and 394 students participated in the study. Data were collected using feedback surveys and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, and a two-way chi-square test for independence. The findings revealed that a significant majority of students (92.6%) would choose not to become teachers. However, 42.4% of them would join the field if they were assigned. Among those who would choose the field, any association between choice and gender, or performance (except choice and performance with no other option), or family profession failed to reach statistical significance. The majority’s reason to join the field is extrinsic and not to do so is intrinsic. ‘Assigning students’ to study teaching rather than through ‘having the interest’ or ‘having no other option’ routes is a preferred way to attract a better pool of candidates to the profession.

AbstractThis paper reviews Louw’s (1993 and subsequent publications) deployment of reference corpora in the light of existing philosophical and linguistic milestones when it comes to the notion of the truthfulness of a proposition. Louw (William Ernest. 1993. Irony in the text or insincerity in the writer? The diagnostic potential of semantic prosodies. In Mona Baker, Gill Francis & Elena Tognini-Bonelli (eds.), Text and technology: In honour of John Sinclair, 152–176. Amsterdam: John Benjamins) resorts to reference corpora in order either to explicate a rhetorical device (in Louw 1993, that of irony) or to attempt to reveal the true attitude of the speaker to his/her own proposition (including instances of insincerity). Using two methods (co-selection and wildcarding), an author’s collocational patterns in context are checked against those in the reference corpus, also in context. The frequent lexical variables of grammar strings are taken to represent that string’s corpus-derived subtext. Recently, Louw’s Contextual Prosodic Theory (CPT) has revealed the mechanism of prospection, whereby the grammatical pattern in the first line of a poem anticipates by its most frequent lexical collocates the themes in the remainder of the poem (Louw, Bill & Milojkovic, Marija. 2016. Corpus stylistics as contextual prosodic theory and subtext, 176–183. Amsterdam: John Benjamins). The philosophical background of Louw’s CPT is the works of Frege, Russell and Wittgenstein (Louw, William Ernest. 2010a. Collocation as instrumentation for meaning: A scientific fact. In Willie van Peer, Vander Viana & Sonia Zyngier (eds.), Literary education and digital learning: methods and technologies for humanities studies, 79–101. Hershey, PA: IGI Global and subsequent works) and could be said to be in need of further explanation and illustration. The paper discusses Louw’s take on insincerity (1993) as the speaker’s attitude to the truthfulness of her own statement from the point of view of Frege’s Sinn/Bedeutung distinction, Russell’s logical language, and Wittgenstein’s attitude to the relationship between language and reality. Since prospection may be considered objective proof of the effectiveness of Louw’s approach, an instance of prospection from a poem by Brodsky is used to show that Wittgenstein’s concern for the truthfulness of propositions may be viewed as both the guarantor and the beneficiary of Louw’s views. Additionally, the paper presents an example of prospection in the first line of a novel, Don DeLillo’s White Noise. However, other grammatical patterns in the passage studied in this paper do not contain deviations from the corpus norm, which conforms to the existing commentary on DeLillo in the field of literary criticism. The paper concludes by stating that reference corpora used inductively (Louw, William Ernest. 2017. Uneasy humour as discovery: Collocation and empathy as Whewellian consilience. Studying Humour: International Journal 4) may shed light on the speaker’s attitude to the truthfulness of their own statement.

Streszczenie:
Introduction: Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder that affects almost 100,000 people in the U.S. Infection is the most common cause of death in these patients. Early identification and initiation of antibiotics given functional asplenia is the key to appropriate management of hospitalized sickle cell disease patients. Approximately 4-5 billion laboratory studies are ordered every year in hospitals. Unnecessary blood tests lead to frequent blood draws and worsening anemia in this already anemic population as well as contribute towards increasing cost of hospital stay. Total national health expenditures in the U.S. is $3.3 trillion (2016) with percent of national health expenditures for hospital care: 32.4%. Objective: We reviewed inpatient admissions of sickle cell disease patients to assess for appropriate work up and timely antibiotic initiation in case of fever. Additionally, we looked up the number of blood draws as well as number of days labs were drawn during the inpatient stay. Methods: This was a retrospective chart review of all patients with sickle cell disease who were admitted to John Dempsey hospital at University of Connecticut with length of stay of at least 3 days between April 2018 to Feb 2019. Results: 57 inpatient admissions were reviewed. Out of 57 admissions, 14 had fever either at the time of presentation or during the hospital stay. Mean time to first blood culture was 56 minutes with 92% (13/14) drawn within 1 hour of fever. Mean time to first antibiotic was 4.58 hours. Antibiotics were initiated in 7% (1/14) in less than 1 hour and 50% (7/14) within 3 hours. Urine culture was checked 78% and chest X-ray was checked 100% of the time in case of fever. On review of 57 patient admissions, labs were checked every single day of hospital stay in 35% (20/57) and if the day of discharge was excluded in 50% (29/57) of the patients. Overall, the labs were checked 82.33 percent of the days patients were hospitalized. On average, labs were drawn 1.14 times per day on each patient. Conclusion: Our project addresses safety, efficiency and timeliness with identification of areas of improvement in febrile sickle cell disease patients. It also addresses patient-centeredness raising awareness for decreased needle sticks for our sickle cell disease patients. There is continuing need to educate our care providers on how to manage fever in sickle cell disease for appropriate work up and early initiation of antibiotics. Also, we need to be more considerate when ordering labs on our patients especially sickle cell disease patients with baseline anemia. This will lead to decreased number of needle sticks and iatrogenic anemia as well as better healthcare resource utilization. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

The “Nationalism” entry in Diccionari per a ociosos, by Joan Fuster, develops, based on the finding in the Diccionari Aguiló of the term nationist [nacionista], an essay on Catalan collective identity in the modern era. According to Fuster, the existence of a term like this in the Catalan language long before the construction of modern national ideologies began anywhere in Europe reveals in an almost premonitory sense the Catalan national condition, halfway between the “excellent” peoples, like France, and the “frustrated” ones, like Occitania. Fuster deployed his hypothesis, however, without having checked the context of the source quoted by Marià Aguiló, a Dominican convent chronicle from the beginning of the 17th century: Lumen Domus. In this paper, we retrace the route Fuster did not take to understand the sense in which this unique witness to term nationist in the Catalan language appears.

This study aimed to identify the contributions of stakeholders to implementing re-admission of adolescent mothers in public alternative secondary education pathways in Ilemela District. The study used a mixed research approach and an embedded mixed-method research design. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative data. Simple random sampling, purposive sampling, and stratified random sampling were applied to obtain a sample size of 111 respondents. Data was gathered using questionnaires, interviews, and a documentary review. The content and face validity of the instrument were checked. Also, the reliability of the instruments was checked, and a correlation coefficient of 0.7 shows that the instruments were valid and reliable. Data gathered from questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics aided by Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 21, and data collected from interviews and documentary reviews was analyzed thematically. The findings revealed various contributions made by stakeholders in implementing the program, like the provision of teaching and learning materials, paid teachers’ allowances and fee compensation, financial assistance, guidance, and counseling. The study concluded that the re-admission program should be improved by constructing more centers, providing the resources needed for learning and daycare centers for taking care of babies of adolescent mothers, and promoting more education about the program to parents and adolescent mothers to encourage many more adolescent mothers to join and reduce the burden of having uneducated mothers in society in the future.

Macroscopic maturity staging data are widely used to distinguish between reproductive and non-reproductive individuals. The implicit assumption is that these data are accurate. The accuracy of macroscopic maturity staging of North Sea herring (Clupea harengus) has not been checked since the macroscopic scale was produced in 1961. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of macroscopic maturity staging of female North Sea herring by comparison to histological staging and the gonadosomatic index (GSI). Ovary samples were collected during the North Sea Herring Acoustic Survey in 2006 on-board FRV ‘Scotia’ (Scotland) and in 2007 on-board FRV ‘Scotia’ and RV ‘Johan Hjort’ (Norway). Commercial samples were also collected by Marine Scotland, Aberdeen in both years. The maturity staging error was relatively low in 2006 (21% error) but was much higher on-board FRV ‘Scotia’ (57%) and RV ‘Johan Hjort’ (47%) in 2007. There was estimated to be a 27% under-estimation of the spawning stock biomass (SSB) in 2007 due to the differences in the proportion mature but no change in SSB estimates in 2006. GSI cut-off scores, estimated by means of multinomial regression models were successfully able to separate immature females from both mature-active and recovering females; however, there was some overlap between the mature-active and recovering individuals. We conclude that an effective and low-cost means of reducing error in herring maturity studies is the combined use of a four-point macroscopic maturity scale with routinely collected GSI data, the latter acting to validate and fine tune macroscopic staging.

It was a normal day of work. I was going through the regular routine of a hectic morning in the NICU at the John H. Stroger Hospital. There was a mom who came to visit her baby in the crib behind me. A few minutes passed, and I turned around to greet her. I asked her if she needed any assistance and gave her a curtain to provide her privacy while doing kangaroo care with her infant. After some time, I checked on her to see if she needed anything. I was touched by the scene in front of me. The mother had the baby tucked in her shirt, and he was comfortably asleep as the mother happily smiled at him, softly whispering loving words. Although this was a normal scene in the NICU, on this particular day, I felt compelled to capture it. I immediately remembered that my unit had just purchased a new camera, which I was coincidentally testing out on this day. I decided that there was no better way to remember this moment than by taking a picture. So I grabbed the camera and asked the mother’s permission. She pleasantly agreed. The picture was so beautiful that I decided to print it out and share it with the other nurses in my unit. The response was overwhelming. Everyone felt touched by this picture because it captured such a beautiful, perfect moment shared between a mother and her infant.

High Cr ferritic/martensitic steels are demanded to join using favorable welding processes with economical and metallurgical advantages in order to apply to the thick-walled reactor pressure vessel of a very high temperature gas cooled reactor. Narrow gap welding technology was adopted to weld a thick-walled 9Cr-1Mo-1W steel with thickness of 110mm. The welding integrity was checked by non-destructive examination, optical microscopy and hardness test, and the homogeneity through welding depth was checked by absorbed impact energy and tensile strength. The optimizing welding conditions resulted that a narrow U-grooved gap with almost parallel edges was sound in actual practice, and the coarse grain zone was minimized in the heat affected zone. The absorbed energy of 75±25 J through welding depth was acceptable in scatter band to check the uniformity through the welding depth. The ultimate tensile stress and yield stress were about the same through welding depth at 650±10 MPa and 500±10 MPa, indicating no difference through welding depth. Elongation was also almost same through depth, and the fracture surface was appeared as a normal. The weld metal had similar mechanical properties to base metal. The upper self energy of weld metal was 194J, and the ductile-brittle transition temperature was 30°C. The tensile behavior was the typical trend with temperature, and YS and UTS of weldment were slightly higher than base metal by nearly below 10%. Thus, it concluded that the soundness of the narrow gap welding of a thick-walled 9Cr-1Mo-1W steel was confirmed in terms of the welding uniformity through the depth and mechanical properties.

The Mach book is a two-dimensional figure which looks three-dimensional. Despite the impression of depth in the figure, the apparent shape has not been determined. It has been suggested that the book appears as part of a ‘cubic corner’, ‘as flat as possible’, or with each half rotated about its long diagonal. Alternative hypotheses as to the three-dimensional orientation of the book were tested by means of a probe-line technique. It was found that, although no hypothesis matched the results of all of the subjects, the probe-line settings of individual subjects were approximately linear or piecewise linear functions of the angles in the picture. The technique was also applied to asymmetric versions of the figure and it was found that the subjects modified their settings in accord with the constraint that the two halves of the figure must join in depth along their common edge. The findings are in agreement with models of the interpretation of line drawings in which local estimates of edge orientation in depth are formed, and subsequently checked for consistency.

Abstract People with mobility impairments (MIs; use assistive devices to ambulate) have twice the smoking prevalence versus the general population. A Facebook intervention could improve reach to smokers with MIs, but use and patterns of use are unknown. The study examined: (a) Facebook use and relationship with Facebook-based social support and (b) whether Facebook use differs by motivation to quit smoking. Participants (N = 510; 56.3% female, mean age = 42.4 years) were recruited via a recruitment company to complete a one-time online survey assessing motivation to quit within 30 days, Facebook use (Facebook Activities Scale), reasons for use (Facebook Motives Scale), attitudes (Facebook Intensity Scale), and social support (Facebook Measure of Social Support). The vast majority said that Facebook is part of their daily routine (92.9%), 83% checked Facebook >once a day, and 69% spent >30 min/day on Facebook. Facebook was used to connect with similar others (68.4%), participate in groups (72.9%), decrease loneliness (69.2%), and obtain health information (62.5%); 88% said that they would join a Facebook program to help them quit smoking. A greater number of Facebook friends (rs = .18–.22, p < .001) and greater Facebook use (rs = .20 to rs = .59; p < .001) were correlated with greater perceived social and emotional support. Those motivated to quit posted more frequently (odds ratio [OR] = 1.56, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.10, 2.22) and were more likely to indicate that they would join a Facebook group for smoking cessation (OR = 4.15, 95% CI = 2.05, 8.38) than those not motivated. Facebook could circumvent disability and environmental barriers to accessing cessation among this health disparity population.

PURPOSE This study was conducted to assess the readability of informed consent forms that describe clinical oncology protocols. METHODS One hundred thirty-seven consent forms from 88 protocols that accrued patients at The Johns Hopkins Oncology Center were quantitatively analyzed. These included 58 of 99 (59%) institutional protocols approved by The Johns Hopkins Oncology Center's Clinical Research Committee and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) over a 2-year period, and 30 active Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), and Pediatric Oncology Group (POG) trials. The consent forms described phase I (17%), phase I/II (36%), phase III (29%), and nontherapeutic (18%) studies. Each was optically scanned, checked for accuracy, and analyzed using readability software. The following three readability indices were obtained for each consent form: the Flesch Reading Ease Score, and grade level readability as determined by the Flesch-Kincaid Formula and the Gunning Fog Index. RESULTS The mean +/- SD Flesch Reading Ease Score for the consent forms was 52.6 +/- 8.7 (range, 33 to 78). The mean grade level was 11.1 +/- 1.67 (range, 6 to 14) using the Flesch-Kincaid Formula and 14.1 +/- 1.8 (range, 8 to 17) using the Gunning Fog Index. Readability at or below an eighth-grade level was found in 6% of the consent forms using the Flesch-Kincaid Formula and in 1% using the Gunning Fog Index. Readability was similar for consent forms that described institutional, cooperative group, and phase I, II, and III protocols. CONCLUSION Consent forms from clinical oncology protocols are written at a level that is difficult for most patients to read, despite national, cooperative group, institutional, and departmental review. The consent process, which is crucial to clinical research, should be strengthened by improving the readability of the consent forms.

Globalization has led diverse stakeholders to join the market and has resulted in corporate and product diversification; however, some markets remain monopolized by a few countries owing to “shadow trade barriers” influencing willingness to purchase. The Korean cherry market has grown rapidly since 2000 but is monopolized by U.S. cherries, which makes the market unsustainable; however, Uzbekistan cherries are 1.75-times less expensive than U.S. cherries. We examined the potential of Uzbekistan cherries to replace U.S. cherries as cherries are imported only from these countries during the spring–summer season. After collecting data through a web survey, we conducted logistic regression analyses to investigate what specific factors affect Korean consumers’ willingness to purchase Uzbekistan cherries over U.S. cherries: price perception, brand familiarity, perceived risk, and country of origin. Results showed that the more price awareness (price perception), experience (brand familiarity), and higher confidence of safety (perceived risk) that consumers had, the more they were willing to purchase Uzbekistan cherries. Consumers who checked the country of origin were less likely to purchase Uzbekistan cherries. The results provide useful information for exporters, importers, researchers, decision-makers, and policymakers concerning the utilization of products for sustainability in a monopolized market.

The environmental disarray caused by plastic usage alarms the world leaders to join hands in making coordinated efforts in creating a green globe to support environment for the future generation. The responsibility of promoting environmental sustainability is not confined to government alone as all the producer companies have equal share in mitigating the plastic waste. One of the ideal strategies of environmental conservation practiced by many of the nations at recent times is extended producer’s responsibility (EPR). This research work purposes in building a multi-criteria decision-making model integrating the methods of MACBETH (Measuring attractiveness through a categorical-based evaluation technique) and MAIRCA (Multi Attributive Ideal-Real Comparative Analysis) in plithogenic environment to make optimal decisions on the plastic recycling methods subjected to four core criteria in EPR context. The efficiency of the newly developed integrated model is determined by comparing the model with other models integrating MAIRCA with the methods of CRITIC (CRiteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation) FUCOM (Full Consistency Method). The sensitivity analysis helps in listing the merits and limitations of the proposed integrated model and also the consistency of the criterion weights and the ranking of the alternatives are checked.

In the structure of crane bumpers, there is a need to join various types of steel. Usually, low-alloy steel structures are used for this purpose, which can be represented by S355J2 steel. The tensile strength of S355J2 low-alloy steel is slightly below 600 MPa, and the tensile strength of S355J2 steel is at the high level of 200 J at ambient temperature. The impact strength of this steel in negative temperatures is also good at over 47 J at -60 °C, so it meets the 6th class of impact toughness. Welding structures, after classic gas metal arc welding (GMAW) processes, meet only the second impact toughness class. An improved GMAW process was used by micro-jet cooling application to raise the mechanical properties of the joints. The microstructure and main properties of the joints were carefully analyzed. The influence of using the new suggested welding process on the various properties of the welds is presented (UTS – ultimate tensile strength, YS – yield strength, Poisson ratio, elongation, Young’s modulus). Then, the effects of tests for use in crane bumper construction were checked by using a hybrid finite element method (FEM) analysis.

Abstract: This study presented a meta-synthesis of Filipino students’ experiences in Online Learning. It utilized 15 out of 1090 studies from 2021 to 2022 that were screened through inclusion and exclusion criteria. The studies were organized using the Preferred Reporting Itemsfor Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 flow diagram and were quality-checked using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist for systematic review. Clark and Braunes’ six-step thematic analysis was done and has emerged seven themes: mental and emotional barrier, social interaction barrier, lack of availability of gadgets and intermittent internet connections, lack of financial support, attention span and academic performances, and parental involvement in an online class. Students’ experiences in online learning emerged as the meta-theme of the study. Filipino students' experiences in online learning opened up new avenues for new ways of learning but a lack of resources and training makes it difficult for them to learn. It is recommended that students should join a free online symposium that tackles various coping mechanisms amidst distance learning. Academic Institutions must provide adaptive learning systems and the Philippine Government must addressthe issues and concerns in distance learning.

My idea was that we should start by studying the impact and relevance of the punishment awarded in a number of simple disciplinary situations. This interest probably reflected something of my Calvinistic background, as well as the extent to which corporal punishment had made an impression on me in my days at Uppingham. Since then I had often wondered about the value of such "correction," which so many extolled and yet so few had sought to validate. My first idea was to investigate the practice then common in schools of caning boys who were caught smoking. Was there any evidence that it had a deterrent effect? Our chance to look into this came only after protracted negotiations with a number of secondary schools in the Rhondda, when one headmaster eventually offered us the confidential access we needed to his punishment book. John Palmer's initial survey of the smoking habits of the boys in years 2, 3, and 4 of this school may have seemed on the face of it a fairly trivial beginning, but it was very much in the spirit of a pilot investigation and more to test the difficulties than break new ground. He merely conducted a short, confidential interview with each boy, asking just two main questions: "How much do you smoke now?" and "How much did you smoke a year ago?" Then he checked the punishment book to find which smokers had been caned. Although the study was far too simplistic to yield major conclusions it did show an interesting lack of any downward trend in the smoking of those who had been punished...

Organizations should equip human resources and sales managers with the vital information and knowledge needed to recruit and select salespersons with the required qualities to help them achieve improved sales performance. This paper aims to determine a salesperson’s educational qualification, selling experience, and persuasive ability and their effect on the salesperson’s performance at Innoson Motors Manufacturing Company Ltd. The study surveyed 131 company staff to collect the data; only 120 questionnaires were correctly filled and returned. First, the study checked the instrument’s reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.982). Data were then analyzed using a simple linear regression analysis. The findings revealed that salesperson educational qualification has a significant positive effect on salesperson performance (r = 0.944; t = 54.251; F = 2943.209; p < 0.05). Next, salesperson selling experience was found to have a significant positive effect on salesperson performance (r = 0.964; t = 68.905; F = 4747.922; p < 0.05). Finally, salesperson persuasive ability was found to have a significant positive effect on salesperson performance (r = 0.960; t = 64.812; F = 4200.634; p < 0.05). Hence, company managers can use the findings of this paper to understand that employing highly educated, experienced, and persuasive salespersons will lead to improved salesperson performance. The city of Jerusalem is the focal point of Augustine’s exegesis of the Psalms of Ascent. In Enarratio in Psalmum 121, Augustine presents Jerusalem as a collective unity contemplating God’s being. The city is thoroughly established in peace and love and participates intimately in the divine life. The essential features of the Jerusalem described in Enarratio in Psalmum 121 align neatly with the created intellectual realm of contemplation (the caelum caeli) outlined in Confessiones Book 12. Both texts envisage a city that participates in the divine idipsum. This city is a creature so intimate with God’s being that its creaturely mutability is checked. Both texts articulate this created intellectual realm as participating in God’s eternity. In both cases, this participation is realized in contemplation: through the constancy of its vision, it is conformed to that which it sees. Finally, both the aeterna Ierusalem and the caelum caeli are a communion—in fact, a city—united in love. In Enarratio in Psalmum 121, Augustine urges his congregants to join themselves to this edifice that is still under construction; in the Confessiones, he presents himself as a pilgrim groaning and longing with desire to be part of the Jerusalem that is above, his mother and patria.

This work is focused on the production of a smart material from cyclic butylene-terephthalate (CBT), characterized by the built-in capability to recover its damage, through the catalyzed ring opening polymerization (ROP) of its oligomers; in particular, molten CBT, after filling the damaged zone, can be converted into poly-butylene terephthalate (PBT), thus promoting a join of the broken surfaces and fixing the crack. To obtain a material with self-healing potential, the production of a partially polymerized system is required. For this purpose, two solutions were studied: the first one involved the use of two catalysts with different activation times, whereas the second solution implied the intercalation of the faster catalyst inside the nanoclay lamellae. Since the intercalation allowed slowing the activation of the catalyst, residual CBT can be converted in a second step. Mechanical properties of partially reacted PBT samples and their healing ability were checked by flexural analyses; in order to promote the healing process, samples were notched to simulate partial damage and left in oven for different times and temperatures, to allow the activation of the unreacted catalyst with the consequent ROP of the residual CBT; flexural tests on samples after healing showed a good recovery of mechanical properties.

Treatments were applied with a truck-mounted John Bean sprayer, 35 gpm pump, equipped with a handgun to thoroughly wet the trees. Approximately 6 gals of spray were applied per tree (400 gal/A). All treatments were applied at 14 day intervals on 13 and 28 Jul, and 11 and 25 Aug. During the season, regular maintenance fungicides of Benlate, Captan, Penncozeb, Rubigan were applied to all plots. Maintenance insecticides were applied on 8 Jun for aphids (Swat 8EC 1 pt/100 gal) and on 24 Jun (Penncap-M 2F 1 pt/100 gal + Asana XL 0.66EC 0.5 oz/100 gal) for tufted apple budmoth control and to stimulate ERM populations. ERM populations were evaluated weekly by counting mites on 25 leaves/tree, 100 leaves/treatment from the ‘Golden Delicious’ trees only. Effect of treatments on SP was evaluated on the ‘Golden Delicious’ trees by separate 3 min counts of adult, larval and pupal stages around the periphery of the tree. Only pupae that had not yet eclosed were counted. Pupal mortality was evaluated by bringing into the lab approximately 200 non-eclosed pupae from the ‘Rome Beauty’ trees of each treatment on 28 Aug. These pupae were checked for eclosion or mortality every 2-3 days for 10 days. Each pupa from each treatment, regardless of the collection tree, was considered a replicate for analysis.

Abstract Rootworm planting-time, soil-insecticide test plots were established at 5 Iowa locations in 1990. Two of these locations were also used for cultivation-time tests. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with 4 replications for the root-protection trial (registered and numbered products) and 8 replications for the yield trial (registered and EUP products). All treatments were applied to single 50-ft length rows with 30-inch row spacing. Granular insecticide formulations were applied with modified Noble metering units that had been laboratory-calibrated to accurately deliver material at a tractor speed of 4 mph. The applicators were mounted on a 4-row John Deere Max-Emerge 7100 integral planter. Each row was constantly monitored to insure that insecticide was being correctly applied at all times. Drag chains were used for incorporation. Cultivation-time insecticide applications were made with electrically-driven Noble units mounted on the tool bar of a 2-row, rear mounted cultivator. Plastic tubes, positioned directly in front of the cultivator sweeps, directed the insecticide to both sides of the corn for basal treatments. Banders positioned directly above the plant row provided whorl treatments. Chemical phytotoxicity was checked in early Jun by taking stand counts from 1/1000 acre and measuring the height of 10 consecutive plants from each treatment. In mid-Jul, rootworm feeding was evaluated by digging 5 roots from each treatment row and rating the damage on the Iowa 1-6 scale (1 equal to no damage or only a few minor feeding scars, and a 6 rating equal to 3 or more nodes of roots completely destroyed). Lodging counts were taken at harvest time. A plant was considered lodged if the angle between the plant and the ground was 45° or less. Yields were measured by hand harvesting 1/1000 acre from each treatment.

Abstract Rootworm planting-time, soil-insecticide test plots were established at 6 locations in 1993. Soil types were: Ames and Rhodes, silty clay loam; Nashua, loam; Newell and Waukee, clay loam; and Sutherland, silty clay. All plots were planted on areas that had been planted to trap crop (late-planted corn, heavy stand) the previous year. A RCB design, with 4 replications for the root-protection trials (registered and numbered products) and 8 replications for the yield trials (registered and EUP products) was used. All treatments were applied to single 50-ft length rows with 30-inch row spacing. Granular insecticide formulations were applied with modified Noble metering units mounted on a 4-row John Deere 7100 planter. Planting-time liquid formulations were applied with a compressed-air delivery system built directly into the planter; 8003E nozzles delivered 10 gpa at 23 psi. Chemical phytotoxicity was checked in early Jun by taking stand counts from 1/1000 acre and measuring extended leaf heights on 10 consecutive plants. Rootworm larval feeding was evaluated in late Jul and Aug by digging 5 roots from each treatment row and rating them on the Iowa 1-6 scale (1 equal to no damage or only a few minor feeding scars, and a 6 rating equal to 3 or more nodes of roots completely destroyed). Lodging counts were taken at harvest time. A plant was considered lodged if the angle between the base of the plant and the ground was 45° or less. Stand counts were taken in the yield plots at harvest time. Yields were measured by hand harvesting 1/1000 acre from each treatment. To determine treatment differences, data were analyzed using ANOVA and means were separated with Ryan’s Q test (REGWQ).

Belt conveyors, equipped with belts designed for transporting materials and finished products are used in many industries. They allow to transport delicate items, for example made of glass, heavy products, such as canned food products and lightweight items, such as cardboard boxes. For this reason, the conveyor belts must, besides transferring power, ensure adequate conditions of transport for the conveyed materials without compromising the service life of the belt. Homogenous belts may not be capable of meeting all these requirements at a time. Composite belts, composed of the load-bearing layers and covering materials adhered thereon with the purpose to modify the surface properties, can be an option of choice in such cases. The described experiments were carried out on the respective materials making up composite belt joints as part of the research efforts related to the PhD thesis on adhesive bonding of composite belting materials. The strength tests were carried out on dumbbell-shaped specimens that were prepared from the load-carrying layer of synchronous polyurethane belting, the facing materials, namely polyamide fabric and polyurethane foam and the polyurethane adhesive used to join these layers. The differences in the parameters describing the surface properties, i.e. hardness and roughness were also checked. The experimental results were used to determine the material and strength properties of the components and the resulting differences were analysed.

Abstract: In most organizations, the ongoing vehicle entry registration process for visitors, staff, or students entering the organization includes a security guard checking the driver's identification card or looking for a membership sticker on the vehicle's windscreen, which can easily be lost or stolen. This writing process is tiresome and time-demanding, and it is prone to incorrect notes; additionally, backup and sharing of this vehicle information is difficult due to the data being a physical copy. The goal of the Automatic Authorized Vehicle Allowance System is to create a digital picture processing system with the Raspberry Pi that can be used in an entrance parking system. The Raspberry Pi will identify the car with an ultrasonic sensor and photograph it. The device then processes the picture using digital image processing techniques. The system incorporates various algorithms such as localization, normalization, orientation, segmentation, and optical character recognition (OCR), which examines picture characteristics and forecasts license plate numbers. The obtained number plate information is then cross-checked with records stored in a pre-existing database. An administration is in charge of designating a "whitelist," which is a list of vehicles that can join the suggested system. If the car registration is found in the database, a servo motor circuit connected to a Raspberry Pi will open the gate, and after a monitor delay, the gate will shut. The system is built in such a way that it is simple to apply in a short period of time and is cost-effective.

<p>It has been confirmed that technology can be beneficial for students’ academic performance, including in the field of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). The successful administration of CALL depends greatly on the teachers’ knowledge about technology, pedagogy and content. The aim of this study is to explore the psychometric property of measure of EFL teachers’ technological, Pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK). One hundred and fifty-eight EFL teachers were invited to join this study through stratified randomization sampling technique. The research instrument was the TPACK-EFL and the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with extraction method of Maximum Likelihood and the rotation method of Promax with Kaiser Normalization, was performed to extracted factors with factor loading above .50. Seven constructs (Technological Knowledge, Pedagogical Knowledge, Content Knowledge, Technological Pedagogical Knowledge, Technological Content Knowledge, Pedagogical Content Knowledge and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) were retrieved. Afterwards, the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was undertaken to examine the convergent and discriminant validity of selected factors. Convergent validity was checked with Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), Maximum Shared Variance (MSV), and Average Shared Variance (ASV). Suggested value for CR and AVE was .6 and .5 respectively while MSV as well as ASV should be lower than AVE. Results showed that constructs of this study all met the requirement which indicated that the items had convergent validity. In terms of discriminant validity, square root of AVE was greater than inter-construct correlations which asserted the discriminant validity of this instrument. Subsequently, alternate model analysis was conducted to yield the model which fitted the best as indicated by the model fit indices and research context.</p>

Streszczenie:
Friction stir welding exploits its solid-state process behavior to join aluminum to steel, which differs in thermal and mechanical properties, and where a combination of these metallic alloys by fusion welding prompts a deleterious reaction as a result of the melting and resolidification phases. Recently, hybrid techniques have been employed in FSW for several materials and alloys, particularly for steel–steel joining. These methods are generally aimed to pre-heat the steel plate materials. This study presents conducted heat simulations and experimental jointing flat-plate of aluminum alloy 6061 and SUS 304. Temperature is simulated by the COMSOL software in three states: (1) Preheat the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) by TIG welding, (2) Thermal contact resistance between aluminum and steel, and (3) The welding process using stirring friction is simulated. The simulations intended to predict the temperature, which is used for the preheating and welding process to ensuring the required solid-state welding. The temperature is also determined and checked by a thermal imager comparing with simulation results. Besides, the results of tensile strength are carried out. The Box - Behnken method is used to identify the relationship between the welding parameters (rotation, speed, and offset), temperature, and tensile strength. The maximum tensile strength is 77% compared to the strength of the aluminum alloy. The optimal set of parameters for the process is n = 676 rpm, v = 46 mm / min and x = 0.6 mm. The optimizing welding parameters to achieving a good quality of the welding process are described. SEM images to determine some properties of welding materials. This is also the basis for initial research to identify some defects in the welding of two different materials (IMC thickness and interconnected pores) and the cause of these defects.

The article reveals Varvara Stepanіvna Zhurbenko's biography. In 1946, the Soviet state security authorities accused her of being a «parricide» and a member of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). The article's relevance is due to the need to determine whether V. Zhurbenko was an OUN member. The article also illustrates the illegal mechanisms used by the Soviet repressive authorities. The research's main source was the V. Zhurbenko's archival-criminal case, which is stored in the Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Lviv region. As a result of the study, it was found that V. Zhurbenko participated in the activities of one of the OUN grassroots units in Dnipropetrovsk in early 1943. She did not join the OUN, but her contacts with OUN's member N. Voronina, who was also an agent of Soviet special services, played a tragic role in her later life. Having received a pedagogical education, V. Zhurbenko worked in the incomplete secondary school of the village Khidnovychi in the Drohobych region. In late 1944 – early 1945, she corresponded with N. Voronina. She was arrested in October 1946. During the investigation, V. Zhurbenko was forced to confess to belonging to the OUN. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Soviet concentration camps. After J. Stalin's death, when the totalitarian regime weakened somewhat, V. Zhurbenko tried to achieve justice. As a result, her case was double-checked (in 1955 and 1959), and eventually, V. Zhurbenko was rehabilitated. She was able to prove that the criminal case against her had been fabricated by an MGB investigator who had used the beating and threats. Thus, the authors found out that V. Zhurbenko was not a member of the OUN, although some contemporary historians were convinced that she belonged to this organization. Keywords: Varvara Zhurbenko, MGB, OUN, Dnipropetrovsk, Drohobych region, military tribunal, rehabilitation.

BackgroundEarly evidence on COVID-19 vaccine efficacy came from randomised trials. Many important questions subsequently about vaccine effectiveness (VE) have been addressed using real-world studies (RWS) and have informed most vaccination policies globally. As the questions about VE have evolved during the pandemic so have data, study design, and analytical choices. This scoping review aims to characterise this evolution and provide insights for future pandemic planning—specifically, what kinds of questions are asked at different stages of a pandemic, and what data infrastructure and methods are used? Methods and analysisWe will identify relevant studies in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health VIEW-hub database, which curates both published and preprint VE RWS identified from PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, the WHO COVID Database, MMWR, Eurosurveillance, medRxiv, bioRxiv, SSRN, Europe PMC, Research Square, Knowledge Hub, and Google. We will include RWS of COVID-19 VE that reported COVID-19-specific or all-cause mortality (coded as ‘death’ in the ‘effectiveness studies’ data set).Information on study characteristics; study context; data sources; design and analytic methods that address confounding will be extracted by single reviewer and checked for accuracy and discussed in a small group setting by methodological and analytic experts. A timeline mapping approach will be used to capture the evolution of this body of literature.By describing the evolution of RWS of VE through the COVID-19 pandemic, we will help identify options for VE studies and inform policy makers on the minimal data and analytic infrastructure needed to support rapid RWS of VE in future pandemics and of healthcare strategies more broadly.Ethics and disseminationAs data is in the public domain, ethical approval is not required. Findings of this study will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and working-papers to policy makers.Registrationhttps://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/ZHDKR

The insecticide histories of the test fields were: Nashua and Sutherland—trap crop (no insecticide)/insecticide test plot, yearly alternation for at least the past 4 years; Creston—Counter '85 and '84, no insecticide '83 and '82; Ames—no insecticide '85, Furadan '84 and '82, Counter '83; Newell—no insecticide '85, '83, '82, insecticide test plot '84. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with 4 replications for the root-protection trials and 8 and 12 replications for the Nashua and Sutherland yield trials respectively. All treatments were applied to 50-ft length rows with 30-inch row spacing. The registered-chemical and yield trials had double-row treatments. All other trials had single-row treatments. Granular insecticide formulations were applied with modified Noble® metering units that had been laboratory-calibrated to accurately deliver material at a tractor speed of 4 mph. Liquid insecticide formulations were applied with a self-contained small plot sprayer pressurized with CO2 Lorsban 50W was applied with a Tee Jet® 8010E nozzle at 13 psi to deliver 20 gpa. All other liquids used a 8004E nozzle with 15 psi to deliver 10 gpa. The applicators were mounted on a 2-row John Deere® Max-Emerge™ 7100 integral planter equipped with ripple coulters. Drag chains were used for incorporation. Cultivation-time granular insecticides were applied with hydraulically-driven Noble units mounted on the front of a tractor. Plastic tubes directed the insecticide to both sides of the plant base for basal applications. A bander positioned directly over the plant whorl was used for whorl applications. Liquid applications were sprayed in a 7-10 inch band at the plant base. Treatments were incorporated with a 2-row, rear-mounted cultivator. In late July, rootworm feeding was evaluated by digging 5 roots from each treatment row and rating the damage on the Iowa 1-6 scale (1 equal to no feeding, and 6 equal to 3 nodes of roots completely destroyed). Chemical phytotoxicity was checked by taking stand counts and plant height measurements for each treatment. Lodging counts were taken at harvest time at Nashua and Sutherland. Analysis of variance was used to analyze the data.

The inclusion of soybeans in our trials resulted from grower testimonials reporting the prevention of rootworm damage by applying ground soybeans. Soybeans were ground to a size similar to that of insecticide granules and applied at 11.2 lb/acre, the highest rate possible. The low bulk density of soybean meal caused the drop tubes to clog at higher rates. Plots were planted 9, 2 and 3 May, respectively, on areas that had been planted to trap crop (late-planted corn, high plant population) the previous year. A RCBD with 4 replications for the experimental and cultivation tests and 8 replications for the yield trials was used.
