Chateau de Balleroy located in the Calvados region of Normandy, France played an important role in the career of François Mansart, popularizer of the “Mansard” roof. Historic architectural features, subsurface archaeological features, and graffiti were documented using drones and multispectral imagery. The analysis of these data enhances our understanding of how the people of Balleroy marked and modified the Chateau and its associated landscape at multiple sociospatial scales over the last four centuries.

Streszczenie:
This paper presents an experimental investigation on the hydromechanical behaviour of a partially saturated soft rock (a porous chalk), the Chateau-Landon chalk. Such conditions correspond to those of a chalk mine known as Royer located in the North-centre of France in Paris basin, subjected to shrinking, drying and potential flooding cycles. To study this rock, we apply a method usually used in soils whose hydromechanical behaviour is strongly modified by changes in suction, according to the degree of water saturation. Different degrees of saturation are imposed by controlled relative humidity conditions with continuous measurement of physical parameters. Hydrostatic compression and conventional triaxial compression tests are performed under drained conditions for saturation degrees up to 100% under low confining pressures. The obtained results have allowed to show fundamental aspects of the chalk behaviour. Correlations between water saturation degree, confining pressure and the mechanical behaviour of the chalk are discussed.

Streszczenie:
AbstractIn the Dauphiné, near Tullins, there is a fortified manor-house known as the Chateau de Saint-Jean-de-Chépy, built in the 13th century, that has in one of its towers an Italian Renaissance map of the heavens painted on the ceiling. The south tower could have been designed for astronomy, with the octagonal-roofed, second floor with its seven windows being used for observation. The first and ground floors have hemispherical vaults, and painted on the ceiling of the first floor there is a map of the heavens that is unique in France. It is painted on the ceiling, with the southern constellations extending down onto the cylindrical wall. It is similar to Italian Renaissance maps, like those in the Old Sacristy at San Lorenzo in Florence (painted by Brunelleschi in 1429), in the Villa Farnesine at Rome (Peruzzi, 1511), and in the Villa Farnese at Caprarola (artist unknown, 1575).An owner of Saint-Jean-de-Chépy was Maurice Bressieu (1546–1617), a distinguished mathematician, holding the mathematical chair at the Collège de France between 1575 and 1586. He wrote Metrices Astronomicae, which was “highly regarded by mathematicians” and became Speaker for the Kings of France at the Vatican. Pope Sixtus-Quintus made him steward of the Vatican Library. It therefore seems very likely that the map could have been painted for him.

When Margaret of Anjou died at the Chateau of Dampierre, near Saumur, on August 25, 1482 it was as a woman not only retired from the world but almost forgotten by it. She who had been for a time the virtual ruler of Lancastrian England, who had raised armies and intrigued with princes, had not enough money to pay her debts except through the uncertain charity of her uncharitable cousin, the king of France. Crushed by misfortune, bereft of power by the death of her husband and son, picked clean of her remaining rights and possessions by Louis as the price of her ransom from English captivity, she seemed to be of no interest to anybody.

The researches on the origins of La Hunaudaye castle (located in Pledeliac, Cotes d'Armor), destroyed in 1793, show from an archeologic survey (from prehistory to antiquity) and from the study of slopes and roads, an extension of the surrounding forest spaces, coming after the late la tene period. The fact that the nearest roman roads of the early roman empire were going around these territories reveals an avoidance of them. These territories appear to be a probable domain of the imperial tax authorities ; this fact seems to be confirmed by the establishment of the breton primitive parishes and the distribution of hagiotoponyms related to the most ancient bishoprics of the peninsula. The establishment of La Hunaudaye castle, midway from an axis that linked directly Corseul, the capital of coriosolites on the crossroads of Lamballe, with the south of the roman roads which is exposed to the incursions from the coast, on the late empire period, is totally justified by the possibility of intervention, in these two directions, and by the possibility to control the forests. The unearthing of the fortress's walls has permitted the observation of the most ancient states of the monument, and the accomplishment of a typology of ceramics, in relation to stratigraphy. The discovery of some merovingian furniture would confirm the results provided by landscape's survey and hagiotoponymy

French cities experience deep changes during the first half of the 20th century, over the urban spreading through residential areas. Taking Rennes specifically into account, this thesis focuses on urban planning, as well as public and private architecture programs achieved in this city. The offices of two mayors and building contractors Jean Janvier (1908-1923) and François Chateau (1935-1944) are used as chronological limits. In order to understand the requirements at stakes, this work focuses on various protagonists (mayors, institutions, architects and building contractors), public contractor services and local authorities of social housing agencies. In parallel, the turn of the century has been marked by new reflections on urbanism. Lots of residential areas are built and play a predominant role in urban planning. At that time, the French urban planning known as the Cornudet law - established on 14 March 1919 - and imposed upon lots of cities, is adopted by the city of Rennes. In order to achieve urban planning, many public buildings (schools, swimming-pools, sport stadiums, day-care centres, public baths) are set up in suburban areas. Through the research on building permits, many kinds of constructions are therefore approached (apartment buildings, houses, stores and manufactures, parking lots) and adopt a regionalist, Art deco or modern style. Finally, this period is also marked by a social housing emergence. Local authority agencies and private businesses will therefore suggest ways to make up for the housing crisis

Classified on the first list of “Historic Monuments” and the first civil building to have its restoration requested and funded by the French State, the Chateau of Blois was the object of two renovation programmes starting in 1843 and respectively supervised by Félix Duban (1797-1870) and Anatole de Baudot (1834-1915). An outstanding synthesis of the history of French architecture, the chateau was also the experimenting field for various techniques, methods and approaches of restoration appearing in the 19th century and stimulating the national debate, in which Viollet-le-Duc played a major role. These unique inventory and analysis of the lapidary collection of the Chateau of Blois, to which are added the studies, the mock models, and the plaster casts of the decorative patterns before their restoration, allow to renew the knowledge about the carved décor of the Louis XII’s and the Francis I’s wings. This study puts into perspective the plaster casts, the stones taken off the facades, the present facades, the manuscript and iconographic sources, and it hereby brings to light the specificities of each restoration campaign, their differences and their complementarity. It highlights two different perceptions of the Renaissance and the way they were expressed in the stone by the 19th-century architects. Thus, thanks to its exemplary restoration and the way it integrated the 19th century into its own history, the Chateau of Blois acts as a true model for restoration campaigns

Abstract In the spring of 1314, scandal rocked the court of France. It was alleged that two of King Philip the Fair’s daughters-in-law, Marguerite of Navarre and Blanche of Burgundy, had for three years been involved in an adulterous relationship with two knights, Philip and Gautierd’ Aunay. The royal response was immediate: Marguerite and Blanche were imprisoned in Chateau Gaillard while their unfortunate lovers were subjected to a public execution that (depending on which chronicler one cares to believe) may or may not have included such popular delights as emasculation, flaying, drawing, hanging, beheading, and quartering, all followed by long and open display of the remains.

Abstract IN his classic The Government and Politics of France (1989), writing in almost Tocquevillian style, Vincent Wright presented young students from the English-speaking world with the specific features and intricacies of ‘Provincial Pressures in a Jacobin State’. In this fine and balanced analysis Wright, as was his habit, took pleasure in emphasizing the paradoxes and contradictions of French political practice. The theory and practice of French territorial organization was presented successively from the contrasting viewpoints of the Jacobins on the one hand and the provincials hostile to the capital on the other. These two opposing, antagonistic, sometimes caricatured visions enabled Wright to reveal to his readers the excesses of the positions held by the protagonists. It also allowed him to sketch with impressionist brushstrokes a portrait of a France that was, and indeed remains, more complex than it seems: neither completely centralized, as the Ancien Regime monarchs and their Jacobin successors wished, nor totally enslaved as the aristocrats subjected to royal power and the court complained-as did, after the Revolution, all those frightened by the power and the blood-letting in the capital. ‘Traditionally’, wrote Wright, ‘the capital was depicted as the malevolent center of Revolution which, in 1789, 1814-15, 1830, 1848 and 1871 disturbed the contented and peace-loving provincials.’ On the contrary, the Jacobins saw the capital ‘as an island of culture, a city of enlightenment, a torchbearer of the progress assailed by oafish-and reactionary-rural clods, the ignorant troops of the church and the chateau.

Abstract At One Point in Mary Pickford’s 1917 film, The Little American, Mary’s character, a young American woman who has recently arrived in France to visit a relative, finds herself caught in the throes of World War I and faced with a band of vicious “Huns” who have broken into the chateau where she is staying. Her eyes wide with fright, her hands plucking nervously at the lace of her collar, Little Mary reaches into the front of her dress and pulls out a ragged square of cloth-a tiny American flag-that she waves in front of the enemy. It is the kind of small but noble gesture common in American silent films that makes even the most jaded spectator gulp with emotion. In this case, the little flag does not stop the marauders; they proceed to rape the servants and pillage the chateau. But Mary’s symbolic gesture is a powerful statement of affiliation and character. It makes clear that she will find a way to defeat the enemy-that no risk is too great. Soon, she is communicating with the French army through a hidden wireless; escaping from a firing squad; and converting her lover, an officer in the German army, to the cause of freedom and justice. She does all this through pluck and resourcefulness, her fragility belying a steely determination and courage.

According to the source query, more than 60 chaplains from the November Uprising emigrated in the years 1831–1832 to Western Europe (mainly France), the United States and to Algeria which was being conquered by the government of Louis Philippe. In the period 1832–1863 further 50–60 priests had to leave their homeland. Moreover, the defeat of the January Uprising caused even further emigration of clergymen. According to estimates, in 1863–1865 there were about 210 priests in France and the Papal States. The author undertakes an analysis of selected correspondence of chaplains as a source for the history of Polish emigration in France in the nineteenth century. Among the numerous epistolary sources, selected letters were chosen which can be found in the Military Archives at Chateau de Vincennes, the Princes Czartoryski Library and the Bernardine Archives in Krakow. This is both official and private correspondence. Epistolary legacy is an important source in biographical research, as one can find there, among others, details concerning social origin, participation in the uprising, places of emigration or pastoral activities.
