This essay explores the utility of the formalist concept of motivation as a way to interrogate the textual and cultural operation of a TV character, Harley Watt from HBO’s Treme (2010–2013). Peeling the layers of character construction reveals how signs convey meaning and confine interpretation. This analytic process highlights how performers and character connect, in this instance, with how the casting of singer-songwriter Steve Earle as a musician with a social conscience imports knowledge of him, his music and history. Ultimately, this essay contributes to the body of research that explores characters as creative and cultural constructs.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose and test a conceptual framework of attitudinal constructs that influence attitude toward the brand in movie product placements. Advertising literature is replete with studies on factors that influence attitude toward the brand (Ab). However, this topic remains under-explored for product placements. Design/methodology/approach – Our framework showcases several theories to relate attitude and fit constructs to attitudes toward the product placement and attitude toward the brand. We use the structural equation model approach to estimate the conceptual framework. Findings – Several attitudinal movie constructs (attitude toward the actor, the character and the movie) influence attitude toward the product placement, which in turn mediates the relationship between the former attitudinal constructs and attitude toward the brand. Interestingly, only the fit between the actor and placed brand impacted attitude toward the product placement, with no effects found for the fit between the character and the fit between the movie and brand and the attitude toward the product placement. Research limitations/implications – We focus on explicit attitudes; implicit attitudes need future research attention. Practical implications – Findings affirm a key role for the actor featured in the placement in directly or indirectly shaping the attitude toward the brand. Originality/value – This is the first study to apply the structural equation modeling approach to this research area.

This article reports development of new scale to measure entrepreneurial characters. Entrepreneurial Characters Scale (SK-WIRA) measures personality traits indicating a person’s capacity to engage in entrepreneurial activity and can be used to study tendency and suitability to work as entrepreneur. In preliminary study, entrepreneurial character is operationalized based on concepts found in literatures: achievement motivation, innovativeness, risk taking, and autonomy. Four SK-WIRA subscales were constructed according to those dimensions. In phase 1 item selection, exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis were applied. Initial set of SK-WIRA constituted of 40-48 items per subscale was administered to university students (N = 130). It is found that items were not clustered based on the theory, but item types (favorable-unfavorable). Therefore, it is predicted that entrepreneurial characters and non-entrepreneurial characters are probably two different constructs and need to be measured using different tools. Final compilation of SK-WIRA consists only 22 items (all is favorable items) with good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = .863). Phase 2 construct validity test using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirms that SK-WIRA consists of four correlated factors. The examination of scale internal structure shows good model fit (c2/df = 244.077/205; RMSEA = .038; CFI = .943; TLI = .936; SRMR = .069).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze how political leaders can rhetorically use social media to construct their leadership, with a special focus on character – rhetorical ethos. Design/methodology/approach The authors used a qualitative case study which consisted of two political leaders’ activities on Twitter. The leaders were chosen on the basis of similarity – both foreign ministers in Scandinavian countries and early adapters to ICT. All tweets, including photos, for selected period were analyzed qualitatively with the classical rhetorical concept of ethos. Findings Social media is the virtual square for political leadership. The two political leaders studied use social media similarly for rhetorical means and aims, with ethos as rhetorical strategy. The rhetorical ethos they constructed differs radically though: busy diplomat vs a super-social Iron man. There is no single constructed ethos that political leaders aim for. Research limitations/implications Even though this is just one qualitative case study, it shows a variety of rhetorical means and constructs of ethos in political leadership. Practical implications The study shows a possibility for political leaders to construct their own image and character through social media, for a potentially large audience of voters, without being filtered by political parties or media. Originality/value This study contributes to the evolving area of rhetoric in leadership/management and it adds to knowledge about how political leaders use social media.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the director’s work ethics with particular attention given to the Islamic perspectives and prophetic character toward sustaining the performance of the business organizations. As at now, there is a limited code of ethics that can be a guidance for the business organizations and its leaders specifically. Design/methodology/approach This paper examines and reviews the foundation and prior studies on directors’ work ethics and Islamic work ethics. Then, briefly discuss and present a conceptual review of the directors’ work ethics based on prophetic characters, as well as its application in modern business activities. Findings Based on Quran and Hadith, this paper proposes that four fundamental moral characters of directors are siddiq (truthfulness), fatanah (intelligent), tabligh (deliver) and amanah (trust). Research limitations/implications This paper is conceptual in nature, thus further research needed to empirically test all the characters in actual practices. Practical implications The outcome of this paper contributes in way of it can be used and applied by the firm and policymakers to construct a comprehensive code of ethics that based on the Islamic values. Originality/value This paper is original as it attempts to suggest the appropriate constructs of directors’ work ethics from the religious studies in the ethics and management literature. These constructs able to increase the integrity and moral behaviors of the directors, which eventually preventing them from a commit in various unethical and malpractices that may obstruct the progress of the country’s economic development and growth.

Purpose – To draw attention to the importance of the spokes-character to marketing communications and a company's branding strategy, this exploratory study attempts to suggest a scale for measuring the spokes-character perception and to explore the relationships among the spokes-character perception and brand equity antecedents, i.e. brand awareness, brand association, perceived quality and brand loyalty, in the context of a retail brand. The purpose of this paper is to encourage the discussion about spokes-characters’ functions in marketing and branding, particularly in the Asian market. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected through a survey among university students in Taiwan. The survey questionnaire was based on the literature on spokes-characters and on the available scales of consumer-based brand equity. Data were analyzed by using structural equation modeling. Findings – The results in this study show that the spokes-character perception is properly reflected by likability, relevance and expertise and likability is the most salient attribute. The spokes-character perception influences brand awareness/association and perceived quality, which in turn influence brand loyalty. Research limitations/implications – This study suggests that likability, relevance and expertise are proper constructs connoting the spokes-character perception and verifies the influence of the spokes-character, as a source of secondary association, on brand equity antecedents, i.e. brand awareness/association, perceived quality and brand loyalty. This study also finds that the spokes-character serves as a cue of perceived quality. Practical implications – The suggested scale provides marketers with an instrument for measuring consumers’ perception of a potential spokes-character. Besides, when the advertiser or the marketer designs a spokes-character, the character should not only be likable, but also be relevant and show expertise relating to the endorsed brand. Originality/value – This study hopes to encourage more discussions about the utilization of the spokes-character in the Asian market because the discussion about how the spokes-character works in this market is still scant. This study also provides empirical evidence for the influence of a secondary association, i.e. the spokes-character, on brand equity antecedents.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is an investigation of the journeys towards a sense of identity or selfhood, achieved through honest and accurate appreciation of the lives of others, made by several female characters in the fiction of A.S. Byatt and the late Iris Murdoch. I believe that because Byatt and Murdoch value literature as a serious business that teaches as well as entertains, their writing can play a significant role in illuminating the lives of women by means of its portrayal of the resolution of women’s struggles. Women’s lives, despite the rise of feminism, are still not equitable. While many women strive to attain a balance of independence and intimacy – what Thelma Shinn calls a “meronymic” relationship – and connection within community, many do not succeed in this endeavour. The numerous challenges they face are difficult and confronting, and the stories of their efforts resemble journeys through a labyrinth or maze. Byatt acknowledges Murdoch as her literary mother, frequently citing Murdoch’s belief in the ability of literature to improve human life. While Byatt and Murdoch are interested in what characters learn about their relations to others and the world, they make it clear that characters are constructs, not real people. Yet their fiction is an ongoing exploration of the nature of reality and the nature of selfhood, particularly that of women. According to feminist theories, women are more constrained than men, and are therefore the focus of this study, but their experience of constraint is a more complex matter than experience of mere undifferentiated oppression, and is better represented by the structure of the labyrinth than that of the simple, linear journey. I agree with Byatt’s and Murdoch’s view of the importance of fiction as a means of commenting on human relationships, particularly with the notion of the need for connection within community. The labyrinth, together with the Bildungsroman, provides a paradigm for the complex experiences of Byatt’s and Murdoch’s female characters. All the characters in this study struggle to flee from restraint, seek purpose and agency in the world through interaction with others, and escape a feminised Plato’s Cave by learning to see more accurately, and all but one emerge from the maze into an autonomous and independent existence in community with others.

Showalter, Edward D. "The Corporate Character Ethical Value Structure: Construct Definition, Measurement, Validation and Relationship to Organizational Commitment". VCU Scholars Compass, 1997. https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5272.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The corporate character value structure consists of ethical values applied in a business setting arranged in a two dimensional matrix presented here as the Corporate Character Ethical Value Matrix, or CC-EVM. The two matrix dimensions are: behavior-types defined as either (1)custodial or (2)proactive; and behavior targets (1)task, (2)consideration-specific, directed toward a specific relationship, or (3)consideration-general, directed at generalized relationships or the organization. The current research developed the matrix to define and classify the six values presented by The Character Counts Coalition’s (1993) as core “pillars” of character: trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, caring, fairness and citizenship. The theoretical background for this matrix was built from the organizational trust and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) literatures, and the business ethics literature. The study tested the uniqueness of these six constructs using items developed from established measures that were combined as one instrument with items developed based on Character Counts Coalition statements. Factor analysis of student (n=324) responses explored the existence of theorized dimensions underlying the established trust and OCB measures. Item reduction eliminated items failing to discriminate between factors, and five factors emerged. The first factor contained items from McAlister's (1995) cognitive-based trust measure and Van Dyne, Graham, and Dienesch’s (1994) obedience measure. The second and third factors contained items from Van Dyne et al.’s advocacy and loyalty measures respectively. The fourth and fifth factors expressed concern for friends and country, and contained items developed from the Character Counts Coalition. Reliable (alpha >.80) scales from the factor items allowed further testing for inferences about the scales validity using personality and demographic measures. Findings show support for the behavior-targets dimension of the CC-EVM. The first factor corresponded to the task target. The advocacy and loyalty measures corresponded to the consideration-specific and consideration-general targets. The friends and country scales failed to exhibit predicted relationships. The five measures were regressed against measures provided by an insurance agency industry sample (n=112) of organizational commitment and shared ethical values. The strongest relationship emerged between consideration-general (loyalty) and organizational commitment. No support emerged for the behavior-types dimension. Implications for researchers and practitioners are discussed.

Streszczenie:
Within the context of potable reuse, there is a need for a more comprehensive examination of the quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in treated wastewater and the efficacy of different treatment schemes in removing or transforming DOM. In particular, there are significant information gaps regarding the character, fate, and health risks associated with effluent organic matter (EfOM). Two research goals guided this research. The first goal was to evaluate the efficacy of constructed wetlands for wastewater polishing in a hot, arid environment, from the perspective of season-dependent effects on DOM. To this end, behavior of organics was evaluated over a 22-month period during treatment in a local constructed wetlands facility. The second goal was to examine changes in character of EfOM that accompany passage through natural treatment systems (either constructed wetlands or soil aquifer treatment, SAT). This was accomplished via isolation and characterization of organics collected along flowpaths of these treatment systems. Wetland effluent concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nonbiodegradable DOC were positively correlated with temperature. That is, the highest concentrations occurred in summer and were attributed to the combined effects of evapotranspiration (ET) by wetland vegetation along with production of wetland-derived natural organic matter (NOM). There was little if any change in the hydrophobic-hydrophilic character of DOM attending wetland treatment. Biodegradation of labile EfOM combined with contribution of wetland-derived NOM resulted in modest (at best) changes in distribution of carbon moieties in hydrophobic (HPO) and hydrophilic (HPI) acid isolates. Aliphatic carbon decreased during wetland treatment. Elemental analysis suggested that microbial activity is the dominant process controlling the character of wetland-derived NOM. Reactivity of isolates in forming trihalomethanes (THMs) during chlorination increased as consequence of wetland treatment. Wetland-derived NOM was more reactive than EfOM in forming THMs. Uniform trends occurred among isolates of EfOM and wetland-derived NOM between biodegradability and THM production upon chlorination. Ultrahydrophilic EfOM was preferentially removed during vadose zone percolation of secondary effluent. The chemical character of EfOM (HPO- and HPI-acids) became more similar to NOM as a consequence of SAT. Genotoxicity of HPO-acids, on a per mass basis, increased after SAT.

Streszczenie:
Social-emotional learning (SEL) measures assessing social-emotional learning and character development across a broad array of constructs have been developed but lack construct validity. Determining the efficacy of educational interventions requires structurally valid measures which are generalizable across settings, gender, and time. Utilizing recent factor analytic methods, the present study extends validity literature for SEL measures by investigating the structural validity and generalizability of the Social-Emotional and Character Development Scale (SECDS) with a large sample of children from schools in Belize (n = 1877, ages 8 to13). The SECDS exhibited structural and generalizability evidence of construct validity when examined under exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM). While a higher order confirmatory factor structure with six secondary factors provided acceptable fit, the ESEM six-factor structure provided both substantive and methodological advantages. The ESEM structural model situates the SECDS into the larger body of SEL literature while also exhibiting generalizability evidence over both gender and time.

Streszczenie:
Characterization in Pulitzer-awarded features and traditional features was measured using a characterization typology developed by the author. Although some of the results were statistically constrained by a small n, those results which were statistically significant reflect that what separates Pulitzer-winning features from regular features are those elements of characterization particular to scene: a character's distinctive physical characteristics, clothing and possessions; the setting and environment as it defines a character; a physical description of character that is not lineament nor habitual posture or expression but bodily appearance in the immediate moment; a character's movements and actions, facial expressions, words, and thoughts. In an era when the predicted demise of newspapers is more fact than fiction, the reader's experience with newspapers is paramount. Crucial to the news reading experience is the reader's enjoyment: how "I" experienced a story through empathy, parasocial interaction, and/or identification. Perhaps a solution to newspapers' loss of readership is scene: within scene, fear, anguish, exhilaration, and joy are not only the experiences of the characters, but also that of the reader's.

Streszczenie:
Traditionally, whisky is matured in casks made of oak and the aroma is greatly influenced by wood species. Currently, the predominant cask types used are those of either American or European oak. In Japan, in addition to these types of cask, a small number of Japanese oak casks have also been used. Maturation in Japanese oak is known to give unique coconut aromas. The aim of this research was to identify the unique coconut aromas imparted by Japanese oak. The sensory properties of Japanese oak whiskies were investigated in comparison with whisky matured in American and European oak casks with particular attention to lactone isomers known to have a coconut aroma. Whiskies matured in Japanese oak casks were found to develop substantially higher levels of trans-lactone relative to whiskies matured in either American or Spanish oak. This research focused on the influence of lactone isomers and found the possibility of a synergistic effect between the isomers on coconut aroma. Further investigation on the impact of heat treatment on regeneration of casks determined that colour and aromatics were generated, while lactones were not regenerated once the levels had been depleted by a period of maturation.

The text brings the analysis of aspects of the literary discourse as the processes of construction of the scenes and the magical universe, in which the narratives of Marina Colasanti are realized, having as it shows the tales of the works Doze reis e a moca no labirinto do vento (2006): "The woman ramada", Uma ideia toda azul (2006): "Beyond the frame", "Between the leaves of green ó" and "Yarn after yarn". The general and specific objectives are to highlight and distinguish the encompassing and generic scenes present in the narratives, to identify the nature of the verbal sign in its relation to the nonverbal sign, and to analyze intertext resources, paratext, among others, as an artistic procedure. The narrative plans are approached, in which the characters are realized mimically, starting from the initial assumption formulated by Dominique Maingueneau. Non-verbal language is an invitation to read verbal language and vice versa. Both are associated with the signs that are constructed through the textual writing: loom and fabric. They can be seen now either explicitly or implicitly, and put in the service of a power that is realized by the act of reading. Thus, in the narrative text, there are traces of a speech in which the text is staged.

This chapter explores how the gendered character of the refrigerator mother offered an interpretive lens through which experts viewed autism when it was first identified as a unique disorder. Character sketches of these early “autism mothers” emerged from a set of topoi—culturally available ideas and images—about mothers in the 1960s and were found lacking compared to the standard of a warm, devoted, and loving mother. The chapter shows that typified gendered characters can be interpreted as explanations for autism, thereby functioning as heuristics for scientific theorizing. It then considers how mothers began to counter this character and construct a new one that would grant them greater epistemic authority.

If mainstream theorizings on the state have paid little attention to its gendered aspects (how the state demonstrates and constructs gender and how gender determines the character of the state), emotions have been far from everyday concerns of the state and its manifestations. This chapter adopts a feminist perspective to argue that, contrary to mainstream views, the state conscripts gendered emotions in its efforts to seek/retain legitimacy and to police citizens to conform to its ideological and developmental moorings. The chapter draws on the Naxalite/Maoist insurgency in India to highlight the gendered emotional language of the postcolonial state which is in violent conflict with its own citizens challenging its legitimacy and sovereignty.

What is the appeal and use of a charismatic character? Henry James’s attempt to preserve an ideal of vivid character associated with older genres like romance becomes part of James Baldwin’s set of rhetorical tools for demanding recognition of gay and black humanity. James shows the contagion of personality among characters not to reject a Victorian style of defined characterization, but as material for his protagonists’ decisive acts of self-definition. When Baldwin rejects the protest novel for failing to recognize the agency of individuals in resisting the roles society casts them in, it is through a Jamesian ideal of identity constructed out of, but not trapped within, one’s social context. The charismatically individual character provides a template for resisting the influence of social convention.

This chapter discusses the complex relationship between Gide’s 1925 novel Les Faux-monnayeurs (in which a fictional character, who is also an author, writes a diary) and Gide’s own diary of the composition of this novel, Le Journal des faux-monnayeurs. This relationship demonstrates the diary’s potential role as a supplement to the literary œuvre (in the sense discussed in the Introduction with reference to Derrida), which functions as follows: the novel Les Faux-monnayeurs presents itself as a total, self-sufficient literary œuvre; Le Journal des faux-monnayeurs is partly conceived as an independent work, but this diary itself deliberates on its relation to the novel, and constructs a model of a composite structure encompassing both works, which is more complete than the novel alone. This greater, composite structure simultaneously critiques the supposed self-sufficiency of the novel and leads to a more open kind of œuvre, with the capacity for endless reinterpretation by readers.

Agnès Varda’s Vagabond (1985) begins and frequently returns to images of the French landscape, and it constructs an allegory that binds the stories and images of its main character, the nation, and the land. At the heart of this and Varda’s subsequent films is an engagement with the significance of the land as a fragile part of an ecosystem, a gendered space, and a powerful symbol of the nation and its patrimony. Rather than view the landscape as an unbreakable link between the nation and the national past preserved in nature, she frames the natural world as a modern phenomenon in a state of ruin and develops an aesthetic of the landscape attuned to this condition. In Vagabond and her later digital documentaries Varda imagines her relationship to the land and history as a process of gleaning from the vibrant possibilities left behind after the process of modernization has run its course.

Rosenthal's rendition of representationalism denies intentionalism. His higher order theory instead asserts that a perceptual state's phenomenal character is set by that state's being related to, because represented by, another, but higher order, cognitive state. The theory arises from the doubtful supposition of unconscious perception and mistakenly construes intrinsic phenomenal character extrinsically, as one state's serving as the content of another. Yet it remains mysterious how and why a higher order state might be so potent as to determine phenomenal character at all. Better to resist higher order theory’s embrace of dubious unconscious perceptual states and account for states so-called simply in terms of humdrum mnemonic malfeasance. Moreover, since the suspect theory allows higher order misrepresentation, it implies sufferance of impossible phenomenal character. Equally problematic, representationalism pitched at the higher order entails the existence of bogus phenomenal character when upstairs states represent downstairs nonperceptual states.

Abstract SDF3 is a syntax definition formalism that extends plain context-free grammars with features such as constructor declarations, declarative disambiguation rules, character-level grammars, permissive syntax, layout constraints, formatting templates, placeholder syntax, and modular composition. These features support the multi-purpose interpretation of syntax definitions, including derivation of type schemas for abstract syntax tree representations, scannerless generalized parsing of the full class of context-free grammars, error recovery, layout-sensitive parsing, parenthesization and formatting, and syntactic completion. This paper gives a high level overview of SDF3 by means of examples and provides a guide to the literature for further details.

Grounded in positive psychology, this chapter focuses on constructs that increase well-being and may result in a flourishing emotional state. Within the PERMA framework, flourishing is reflected in positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. Specifically, this chapter takes an in-depth look into the constructs of positive emotions, character, and purpose. Information on measurement tools, correlates, and possible interventions for each of the three constructs is provided. An emphasis is also placed on promising positive psychology interventions, many of which utilize strategies involving character strengths as defined in accordance with the Values in Action (VIA) Classification of Character Strengths and Virtues. The chapter concludes with information on how a reader can implement various positive psychology activities, as well as different school based-programs that incorporate purpose and positive psychology interventions.

Streszczenie:
We start with the basic stuff used to build EXPRESS: the characters you use to build ‘words’ and the different kinds of words that may appear in the source. Computer languages call these words tokens. You compose characters according to syntax rules to form different kinds of tokens. In turn, tokens are composed into statements and statements are composed into blocks (we will get to statements and blocks directly). The syntax alone does not define the language however — we also need to be concerned with semantics. Semantics deals with the meaning of well formed syntax. As an example, EXPRESS has tokens for identifiers and reserved words. Although they both look like ‘words’ they are different; an identifier cannot be the same as a keyword. EXPRESS expects to see identifiers and reserved words in specific places within statements. It is an error to put an identifier where a reserved word is expected and vice versa. EXPRESS is correctly written only when both the syntactic and semantical rules are observed. EXPRESS source is composed as a stream of characters. The source stream is decoded into tokens, statements and blocks according to the syntax rules. The source is typically broken into a number of physical lines, which is any number (including zero) of characters ended by a ‘newline.’ The source will be more attractive and easier to read when statements are broken into lines and whitespace is used to set off different constructs. The following declarations are the same to an EXPRESS parser, but give different impressions to human readers. The EXPRESS character set is easy to explain —just look at your computer keyboard. Most of the characters you see there are used to write EXPRESS. However, there is a more complicated explanation which follows: the EXPRESS character set is denned as cells 00-7F of plane 00 of group 00 of ISO 10646. Of those characters, cells 20-7E as shown in Table 9.1 are actually used to write EXPRESS. Any other character (cells 00-1F, 7F) is called a ‘rogue’ character, and if used is treated as a space unless it appears within a string literal or a remark.

This chapter features a description of three contradictions (i.e., disconnects) in the activity system of international higher education students in online learning. These disconnects are interpreted in relation to the constructs of teaching presence, real presence, and social and cultural presence and analyzed in terms of their origins in face-to-face, time- and place-dependent contexts of learning. Teaching presence is the external (to the student) regulation and management of learning, real presence is the sensory-rich character of learning, and social and cultural presence relate to specific types of interactions and communication that occur in conjunction with learning. Learning presence reflects a constructivist perspective that values socially-constructed forms of knowledge and self-regulation. The chapter follows with a description of how the disconnects can be bridged and the activity system expanded.

In this chapter, the Y-AP constructs, in tandem with the mobile phone, act as a series of human-technology interactions that can be used by youth workers to understand the dynamics of the relationship between youth and adults. The main role of this chapter is also to provide a structure that can provide guidance and understanding of the role of Malaysian youth workers when dealing with technology as a forum for collaboration between youth and adults.

This is the first of two chapters that examine ways Stein’s increasingly experimental writings during the first three decades of the twentieth century gradually work through dominant early twentieth-century genders, loosening up and ultimately rejecting the rigid constructs of masculinity she encountered in Otto Weininger’s misogynist Sex and Character. Chapter Two focuses on cross-gendered identification in Stein’s earliest literary efforts—the prose narratives Fernhurst (1904-5), Q.E.D. (1903), and Three Lives (1909). In these works, Stein rejects the category “woman” while questioning the limitations of patriarchal ideologies about masculinity and femininity alike.

Chapter four, “Unwilling Feeling,” reads John D. Caputo’s material theology and his conception of the insistence of God alongside Sara Ahmed’s work on what she names “affect aliens” and willfulness to offer biblical scenes of affect alien prophets. Jonah and Martha embody such moody prophecy in this scene. The chapter constructs and applies an affect hermeneutic to and with biblical texts in order to read for what might happen when we follow moodiness to unexpected theological conclusions. Jonah’s and Martha’s moodiness in their biblical tales reveal not what’s wrong with them, but rather serve as a lament against problematic theological interpretations and conscriptions of each character. These affect alien prophets exist as blockage; their existence stops up or slows down the normative flow. These biblical characters prophetically persist by remaining moody impediments to the story. To gravely attend to such prophets is to embrace alternate flows or undercurrents within the biblical story. Such an embrace invites us to look for alternate flows within our contemporary stories.

Present biologic models envision organisms behave like the character ‘Topsy’ in Gone with the Wind; they “just grew.” Modeled of Lego©-like components, the individual structures are linked together as if they are automobile parts that are manufactured at different plants and assembled at some central factory. For the most part, hexahedral finite element meshes are used to model structures. When tetrahedral modeling is used, no account is made of the different mechanical properties that are inherent in triangulated structures, (trusses), that make the structures behave very differently than hexahedral-based models.

Streszczenie:
In a Collaborative Product Commerce (CPC) environment, it is necessary that the participants in a product life cycle should share semantics of terms although they may be represented differently. In order to manage this sharing of semantics, it is necessary to recognize automatically that two terms represented differently can have equivalent semantics. To this end, a semantic mapping logic that utilizes ontology and a Bayesian Network is proposed. The proposed approach consists of three phases: character matching, definition comparisons and similarity checking. First, character matching maps two terms that have identical character strings; second, the definition comparison step compares the two terms using their ontological definitions. Finally, similarity checking evaluates the similarity between two terms using their ontological structure and the Bayesian network. This final phase consists of three steps. Firstly, it calculates similarity between two terms in terms of their character strings and ontological definitions. After this step, it constructs a Bayesian network with the paired terms based on their ontological structure. Finally, it infers whether the pairs are mapped based on the network through a probability equation. The proposed approach is also applied to the integration of the CAD and PDM systems.

Streszczenie:
Free-form surfaces are useful for modeling the external shape of industrial products but designers are still facing difficulty in designing high-quality aesthetic surfaces because commercial CAD systems currently available lack the required performance to support their design work. This has therefore led to the increasing need for design-aiding modeling systems to enhance the efficiency of high quality surface design processes. This paper proposes a method of redesigning aesthetic surface shapes by controlling unit normal vectors on the surface and discusses a fundamental system constructed based on the proposed technique. Attempts were also made to construct the required character lines using the proposed technique. Additionally, the validity of the proposed technique was also verified. In the surface evaluation stage of existing product design processes, the highlight-check method using highlight lines on the surface of a model is the most common and popular evaluation method even though methods using curvature and isophote have been proposed. With this method, the unit normal vectors on the surface are controlled by highlight lines. A highlight line is defined as a curve which consists of points with a constant angle to the right reflective direction when a beam shines on an arbitrary point on a surface. With this highlight-check system, highlight lines are displayed on the screen and evaluated by the designer. When highlight lines are faulty or those required by the designer cannot be obtained, the designer just needs to enter the required highlight lines manually by drawing with a pen tablet on LCD interactive display to improve surface quality. Usually, the system takes input highlight line information as unit normal vector information, and constructs the required surface shape using that information.

The additional ship resistance due to water oscillations in an open moonpool as constructed in drillships can be obtained through model tests. The oscillation has a dominant frequency and character, and the amplitude increases with forward speed. The resonant oscillation mode can be piston or sloshing. Recent measurements show that both types of oscillation can increase ship resistance to the same magnitude. The sloshing mode dominates in longer moonpools, while piston mode oscillations are dominant in shorter moonpools. Based on two model tests series carried out at Delft University of Technology, a resistance prediction model is constructed for piston type oscillations. The model was verified with a resistance measurement performed at MARIN in the past, showing fair agreement between the predicted and measured resistance increase.
