AbstractThe technological changes of the twentieth century obliged research institutes to rethink their role in society. A place for invention and reflection, and a centre for the preservation of our musical heritage, the Groupe de Recherches Musicales must open its doors from now on and increase its collaboration with other bodies in an enlarged form: an extended ‘group’, extramural, which shares its tools and thoughts with others.

The article considers the evolution of group singing in the Kyrgyz musical folklore at the end of the XIX century, recorded in the musical texts of the Kyrgyz musical folklore, from the point of view of their ethno-musical and musical-factual analysis. It was clarified that the genre of working and revolutionary songs in Kyrgyzstan was formed in the pre-revolutionary period and has undergone changes in the functions of the group singing environment. Instead of ritual and lyrical songs that raise acute social themes, urban songs of protest content began to appear. Special attention is paid to the evolution of group singing in Kyrgyz folklore.

The ethnic group ‘Hmong’, the descendants of Chinese ‘Miao’ group who migrated south to reside in Northern Thailand, is known to possess their own unique arts, culture, tradition, and music. However, the influence of social change seemed to largely affect the musical culture of Hmong ethnic, Khao Kho District, Phetchabun Province, in a multifactorial manner. Through different phases of a series of communist wars, the original musical cultures were subjected to the cumulative changes of social contexts, evolving toward modernization, at a great extent. In addition, not only the social changes have had a large impact on the Hmong ethnic’s musical cultures, but also on their ritual performances that require music as its core. This study aimed to elucidate the effect of social changes on musical culture by identifying the key contributing factors that determined Hmong’s musical performances and appreciation based on their historical features.

Indonesian Islamic music has its own performance occasion, musical function, music characteristic, and the style of musical performance. It has lyrics that represent direct relationship between Moslems and God in religion ceremonies. However, the musical structures are changed due to external stimulation coming along with the changes of Indonesian social structure during its development especially in 1975. Kasidah, a sort of Indonesian Islamic music, is the best exemplification to manifest the interaction between social development and music cultural changes, peculiarly performed by the music group of Qasidah Modern Nasida Ria in Semarang, Indonesia. The reason is that kasidah is more liberal than other Islamic music genres in Indonesia, especially on musical performance, usage on instruments, etc. This research sees “music” as a communication system of sound which passes through social usage and cultural contexts in Ethnomusicological perspective. The focus of discussion in on this group to explore some topics in order to comprehend the interaction between social structural development and the innovation of kasidah musical structure in Indonesia, such as the transmission and development of the group Qasidah Modern Nasida Ria, innovation of the group Qasidah Modern Nasida Ria and its music, and the musical function of modern kasidah. By which to understand the current development of kasidah in Indonesia, explore the concept and the role of the word „modern‟ plays in the development of modern kasidah, and point out the cultural syncretism and impact occured in the development of modern kasidah.

Background: We aimed to investigate the effects of a community-based senior musical program on the cognitive and physical functions in older women. Method: Older women aged ≥65 years participating in a program at a community welfare center were randomized to experimental (n = 17) or control (n = 17) groups. The control group participated in singing and yoga classes offered at the welfare center, while the experimental group participated in a senior musical program consisting of vocal training, dancing, and breathing training. The effects of the 12-week program (120 min/session, two sessions/week) and the intergroup differences in outcomes were compared using the cognitive impairment screening test (CIST), pulmonary function test (PFT), respiratory muscle pressure test (RPT), and static and dynamic balance tests. Result: The experimental group showed significant post-intervention changes in CIST scores, cardiorespiratory parameters, and static and dynamic balance (p < 0.05), but the control group only showed significant changes in some respiratory and balance parameters (p < 0.05). In comparison with the control group, the experimental group showed significantly greater post-intervention changes in the CIST score, PFT and RPT parameters, static balance, and Y-balance anterior (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The senior musical program enhanced older women’s cognitive, respiratory, and physical functions and promoted a sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction.

Repertory grids were used as a research tool to explore 73-year-old James’ musical development over two years. Choosing two music learning cultures for his instrumental learning, James learned the piano in a college workshop and the Appalachian dulcimer in his local folk group. There were clear changes in his musical skills and attitudes, particularly in relation to performing and practising, and an increase in his musical maturity as he transformed himself from a music listener into a musical performer, reconstructing himself as an amateur musician. The empowerment gained from his reconstruction was a critical factor in James’ self-fulfilment as a mature-age adult.

Streszczenie:
The perception of speech in noise is challenging for children with cochlear implants (CIs). Singing and musical instrument playing have been associated with improved auditory skills in normal-hearing (NH) children. Therefore, we assessed how children with CIs who sing informally develop in the perception of speech in noise compared to those who do not. We also sought evidence of links of speech perception in noise with MMN and P3a brain responses to musical sounds and studied effects of age and changes over a 14–17 month time period in the speech-in-noise performance of children with CIs. Compared to the NH group, the entire CI group was less tolerant of noise in speech perception, but both groups improved similarly. The CI singing group showed better speech-in-noise perception than the CI non-singing group. The perception of speech in noise in children with CIs was associated with the amplitude of MMN to a change of sound from piano to cymbal, and in the CI singing group only, with earlier P3a for changes in timbre. While our results cannot address causality, they suggest that singing and musical instrument playing may have a potential to enhance the perception of speech in noise in children with CIs.

Ways in which young people’s positive self-development and maturation can be enhanced is of great interest to educators, parents and society alike. This study adopted a phenomenological approach to investigate the relationship between beginner group harp learning and self-efficacy and musical/harp self-concept, and the transferability of this relationship to academic contexts; using a combination of pedal, lever, non-lever and lap harps. Five female participants, all of whom attended a public secondary school in regional NSW, engaged in 20 beginner harp group learning sessions, 10 of which were filmed, and completed four questionnaires dispersed throughout the study. The role of the researcher, who also led the sessions, was considered through the process of ethnography. Findings revealed, from mostly qualitative data, that beginner group harp learning enhanced enjoyment, connectedness, and accessibility, and was perceived as a more relaxed form of learning. Self-efficacy was discovered to develop through the theme of confidence, and impacted participants’ perceptions of themselves as harpists. Ultimately, increasing levels of self-efficacy and a developed musical/harp self-concept was suggested to impact either participants’ achievements, perceptions of self-efficacy in academic settings, and/or their wellbeing.

The purpose of this study is to focus on the song texts of artists, Karen Zoid, Fokofpolisiekar, The Buckfever Underground (and Toast Coetzer) and Bok van Blerk and to determine their function in today’s cultural reality, and whether these musicians and their music have an influence on today’s youth and their search for a Cultural Identity. This study will also focus on the socio-political factors that led to the rise of the Afrikaans Music Industry. By analyzing these artists’ lyrics, I want to determine whether they are significant works of literary quality. These musicians were chosen because they are regarded as young contemporary musicians.

The chapter offers a developmental and cross-cultural perspective aiming to compare the results of the Western Balkans and international studies. It opens up questions about the joint contribution of motivation and personality in achieving musical excellence. Their core role is featured through the developmental prospect focusing on music performance accomplishments. The main results are presented from several research studies conducted in the Western Balkans, specifically in Serbia, which cover three age groups (aged 6–22) learning music as part of the three-staged specialist music education system. The research review indicates the relevance and differential contribution of motivational features and personality traits, as well as musical abilities and social settings, to various levels of achievement. Results indicate changes in prevalence of contribution depending on developmental stages. Attention is given to the nexus of psychological and environmental factors that strongly impact musical outcomes at each developmental stage. The studies from the Western Balkans are highlighted to evaluate cultural perspectives and variations.

AbstractThe aim of this study is to analyse the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on musical societies in the Valencian Region, which were declared as an Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest in 2018. These cultural societies, which include over 1,100 bands, have had to make changes to adapt to the global pandemic. They are made up of symphonic bands, music schools, choirs, orchestras and other musical groups. Their social structure involves a large part of the Valencian Region’s population which, to some extent, becomes part of the creative process and transfer of musical languages, such as cultural transmission and historical content. This teaching model includes a variety of strategies, such as generating community ties that go beyond the social dimension. Moreover, the process of transformation, adaptation and resilience followed by these musical societies in order to maintain their training routines and other tasks will be analysed through an ethnographic study. This aims to focus on the extent of the economic, social and pedagogical impact of COVID-19 on these organisations.

Classical music is often seen as a practice that struggles to react to contemporary events. Yet, it does register societal changes, with perhaps the most important being climate change. There is a sense of urgency, as well as a need for concrete action on this topic within the field. This chapter discusses how the classical music sector might respond. In this roundtable, Peter Peters is joined by four panellists with a stake in the issue: Teemu Kirjonen, general manager of the Finnish Lahti Symphony Orchestra, an orchestra that decided to go carbon neutral; Detlev Grooß from Germany, a violist and also chairperson of the Orchester des Wandels (the orchestra of change), which is a group of musicians from various orchestras around Germany who want to address climate issues; Georgina MacDonell Finlayson who is sustainability manager at the Scottish Nevis Ensemble, Scotland’s ‘street orchestra’, who play in unusual locations and tour extensively around their home country; and finally, Jan Jaap Knol who is the director of the Boekman Foundation, which is the institute for arts culture and related policy in the Netherlands, known for their research in the cultural sector. Each gives their own perspective on how their organisations are beginning to address the most pressing issue of our time.

AbstractThe festival Borealis—a festival for experimental music in Bergen, Norway, whose artistic director Peter Meanwell and former managing director Tine Rude are being interviewed by Brandon Farnsworth, works with an expanded definition of experimentation in both programming and how it is organised. It focusses on including artists pushing boundaries in a variety of contexts, trying to move beyond being a festival for any one genre. The festival also extends its concept of experimentation to include how it is organised, linking the act of hearing other’s perspectives that experimental music demands of its listeners with fostering a sense of community among marginalised people and groups. This approach has led the festival to implement a number of accessibility and inclusion measures, creating a unique mix of forms of musical experimentation and community-building that materialise many other contributors’ calls for modelling change in both form and content.

AbstractMusic, like many cultural and creative industries, can be analysed from symbolic, political and economic dimensions. It is a vibrant, highly resilient sector that has continued to evolve over time from prehistory to the present. Moreover, the music industry has developed in lockstep with technology, creating fascinating business models since the inception of the Internet, forcing companies and artists to adapt continuously to the new environment. This is also related to music customers, who change their preferences as new genres and trends appear. Governments are well aware of the opportunities that music affords to local development and have created public policies that boost the sector. On the other hand, music has also proved its educational role, and its function as an identity builder, especially in local environments where music is present in many festivities in the shape of bands. Mediterranean locations have a rich tradition in this type of musical societies and groups which create a collective identity that is transmitted from one generation to the next. Finally, music has not been immune to the crisis caused by the pandemic, though it has once again shown resilience in this respect, adapting rapidly to the new economic, societal and educational challenges that are currently affecting the entire world.

AbstractTo consider institutional critique within the music field requires some alteration of its fundamental terms, because music had developed a second aesthetic system surrounding Black art and had institutionalised it much earlier than modern or contemporary art had. This de-universalisation of the European fine arts has consequences for the theory of critique. Black music’s governing institutions in the 1960s were the recording label, the night club, the summer festival, and the mass periodical, and artists such as Charles Mingus, Bill Dixon, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Alice Coltrane worked to confront, evade, and change them. Black musicians were more likely to build institutions than to destroy them, a mission shared by adventurous groups like the AACM and conservative ones like Jazz at Lincoln Center. The critique of traditionally racist cultural formations by historically oppressed people was often delivered through hard-won participation, not abandonment.

AbstractThough the Darmstadt New Music Courses have often been the site of critique, relatively few of those critiques have brought about concrete change. This might be illustrated in its fullest form in the history of the courses in the 1970s. A sequence of protests appear, on the superficial level, to have been the proximate cause for a gradual transformation of the institution, in its move away from the authority of its earlier senior figures in favour of a more egalitarian model, where different approaches can co-exist. Yet this history belies the ways in which that apparent diversity both repeats the ways in which the territory of new music was historically divided up and that territorial disputes actually prevent criticism of the institution itself, critiques which were being undertaken by a small group of composers who arguably represented a very different possible, unrealised future for new music in the 1980s: Fernando Grillo, Moya Henderson, Christina Kubisch, and Davide Mosconi.

Abstract This chapter guides readers to consider what they are hearing when they recognize musical performing, and how they create musical performances themselves. Readers consider whether they believe musicality can be learned, provides expressive approaches that can help nurture the musicality of students. The relationship between technique and musicality is examined. Musical exploration opens two pathways to musical expression: by helping a performer become more aware of the connection between written music and personal expression, and by revealing the possibility of many ways to play musically. The chapter further discusses the different categories of knowledge and expression that influence musicality, such as the ability to perform with a variety of dynamics, articulations, and tone colors; a well-developed sense of timing, pacing, and tempo; the ability to connect a group of notes into a single, unified shape that completes a musical idea; and the ability to respond to changes in harmonies and other compositional elements in a meaningful way.

The South Africa-based ‘Support Programme for Abuse Reactive Children’ combines psycho-educational and cognitive behavioural diversion approaches with creative programmes, including music therapy, to offer holistic rehabilitation to young sex offenders. This chapter offers a case story describing key moments in the music therapy process for one group of young offenders. From my perspective as the music therapist, I consider how collaborative drumming enabled participants to experience belonging and acceptance and how musical story-writing and improvisation motivated group members to support and challenge one another as they took ownership of their personal stories. I further explore how the experience of creating and performing a group rap offered a means through which group members could reconnect with their home communities as adolescents with potential, hope for the future, and a willingness to take responsibility to make relevant changes in their lives.

Streszczenie:
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) have been integrated into our Introductory Materials Engineering course and certain undergraduate independent research experiences at Western Washington University. The key idea underlying these modifications to the curriculum is to increase active student interest and involvement in their own learning. Active learning does indeed promote the way students construct their own understanding of materials engineering design solutions. Since a diverse group of students learn in many different ways, delivering curriculum in multiple ways increases the probability of improving student learning. During the past four years, several strategies have been implemented in our Introduction to Materials Engineering course to transform it from a traditional lecture-centric class to an active, “learner-centered” environment. Case studies, problem based learning (PBL), concept questions, stringed musical instrument design, and active, in-class demonstrations have all been integrated into the course during this transformation. Recent additions to this new course strategy have been the integration of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) illustrations and animations as in-class dynamic demonstrations and applications. In this course, the students must master the ability to use fundamental materials properties such as: tensile strength, yield strength, modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio, flexural strength, hardness, fatigue limit/life, and creep life, so they can correctly select a material for a simple design case given multiple engineering constraints. Since so much of this course is design and applications based, FEA makes an ideal compliment to the other active and conceptual strategies. This paper, then, describes the new FEA and CAD additions and strategies to the course. In addition, the changes in the Introduction to Materials Engineering course have generated a great deal of student interest in completing independent research projects investigating materials for stringed musical instruments and numerous research projects have been completed. The most impressive of these, the design and production of a carbon fiber composite violin using all computer-based tools and an independent research project on guitar design are described. Finally, the paper provides an initial assessment analysis that shows students improving on classical test problem scores, having an enhanced ability to complete a more complex final design problem, and demonstrating increased interest in engineering design.

Consuming music through streams has made huge volumes of data available. We collect a part of such data and perform cross-era comparative analyses between physical and digital media for successful artists within the music market in Brazil. Given an artist’s career, we focus on hot streak periods defined as high-impact bursts occurring in sequence. Specifically, we construct artists’ success time series to detect and characterize hot streak periods for both physical and digital eras. Then, we assess their features, analyze them in the genre scale, and perform a cluster analysis to identify groups of artists with distinct success levels. For both physical and digital eras, we find the same clusters: Spike Hit Artists, Big Hit Artists, and Top Hit Artists. Our insights shed light on significant changes in the dynamics of the music industry over the years, by identifying the core of each era.

User-oriented design allows to develop design solutions based on user’s needs and desires. In order to meet user’s needs better, designers work on understanding and adaptation of human perception principles. Later this data would be used in design processes. The article is relevant due to the problem of interrelation of perceived information about environmental objects through different channels. The existence of this relation is confirmed by empirical studies, but its features and nature are not fully clarified. This article is devoted to the search and analysis of the relationship of information, which was received from different perception channels. This information allows to get input data about client's color and musical preferences. The article considers the comparability of colors and sound, which were obtained by testing a group of respondents. The work includes selection of associative color series for a fragment of a musical composition, which allows to analyze results and to make conclusions about its coincidence and discrepancy. Obtained results show connection of music and color based on artistic and figurative basis. Coincidences can be used in computer graphics while color spaces composing and in design at the stage of coloristic selection.

<div class="htmlview paragraph">When evaluating the sound generated by PWC (personal water craft), it is essential to study the measurement method for the PWC sound itself. However, it is equally important to identify the influence on the people in the neighbor of shoreline by being exposed to the sound from a group of PWC running around on waters. Such influence can be grasped in relation to the results of sensory evaluation.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">LAeq (equivalent continuous A-weighted sound level) was measured on PWC's running in various patterns and different numbers, while sensory evaluation was performed to obtain the data for the feelings the exposed persons would have about the sound. In this way the correlation between the sound pressure level and its perception by the people were analyzed.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">LAeq is the mixture of natural sound at the test site and the sound from the PWC(s) running in the predetermined patterns. We analyzed how the measured sound pressure level changes by the distances from the shoreline and the numbers of PWC's in operation.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">SD method (Semantic Differential Method) was applied for the sensory evaluation, in which the persons subjected to the test described the impression of the sound and vibration without his or her visual perception. Twenty six (26) persons took part in the test, and they made an assessment using twenty (20) pairs of adjectives of opposite meanings. Then, the gathered data was processed by varimax rotation in regard to two (2) factors, and the separated factors were named “noisy factor” and “musical factor”. Cluster analysis was performed for twelve (12) running patters, and they were grouped into three (3) clusters. The results of sound pressure measurements and the factor analysis verified the correlation between LAeq and “noisy factor” in person's perception. As expected, LAeq is also related to the distance from the PWC to the shoreline, as well as the number of PWC's in operation.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The finings from these testing will make the good reference material in establishing the requirements to assure the good environmental conditions.</div>

The research was implemented within the framework of the University of Latvia master’s study program “Pedagogy” course “Effective classroom management”. During the action research, the researchers identified group management problems in music lessons at educational institution X, in group Y. Key problem identified was the insufficient attention of children at the beginning of the lesson. The research proceeded to also look for possible solutions. The aim is to analyse current methods of delivering effective music classes in a pre-school setting, and propose and validate new strategies to improve the beginning of a music lesson. The study involved 17 preschool children (11 boys and 6 girls), a music teacher, and two group teachers, and an observer. The study was conducted from October 2019 to March 2020. The first results of the action research show that as the teacher changed her classroom activities, introduced certain group management techniques, such as signalling and acoustic counting, and repeating these as a routine activity in each lesson, children’s attention improved significantly at the beginning of the music lesson and became more sustained.

With the popularity of online shopping, online e-commerce is paying more attention to the impact of sensory marketing on consumer behavior. Previous studies suggest that music plays a significant role in enhancing the online shopping experience for consumers. However, the specific patterns of consumer impulse that music induces are yet to be fully discovered. Therefore, the study aims to explore the influence of music popularity on online shopping behavior in reference to the familiarity on emotion regulation. The results can create a better auditory environment for users' shopping experience and give a guidance for merchants to choose music that fits their brand positioning.MethodThirty participants (15 females) between the ages of 19 and 33 (M = 23.8, SD = 3.2) were recruited and all had years of online shopping experience. Participants were evenly assigned to three groups(no-music group, non-pop music group, and pop music group). The task scenario of participants is to buy a pair of sports shoes, so we simulated the current mainstream e-commerce shopping website to make online shopping pages of sports shoes. We first got 50 popular and 50 non-popular songs based on popularity on the charts of various music platforms. Then 10 of each the most popular and the least popular songs were selected from each of the two groups based on user feedback. Participants were asked to browse eight goods while listening to music in a quiet indoor environment. In terms of objective data collection, eye tracker was used to record participants' browsing time, browsing track and focusing position. After that, we used a questionnaire to collect the subjective evaluation. The questionnaire mainly includes three parts: recording emotions before shopping, recording behaviors during shopping (direct purchase, add shopping cart, share and collection), and recording experiences after shopping (ranking of purchase intention, emotions and music feelings). Finally, we conducted a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews to improve the experimental design.ResultsA t-test of the experimental data revealed that the duration of participant browsing markedly increased when shopping with music, in comparison to shopping without music (p<0.05). Compared with non-pop music, the subjects were more familiar with pop music and listened to it for a longer time. During the experience with popular music, the emotional arousal of the participants significantly increased in the shopping context (p<0.05). More precisely, the heightened shopping excitement contributed to an elevated rate of adding items to the cart and sharing these selections.ConclusionOur research shows that music popularity significantly influences online consumer behavior. Specifically, in terms of the connection between music types and shopping experience, pop music first increases users' attention to goods. In addition, familiar music enhanced the arousal dimension of mood, thus promoting the arousal of desire to buy. These insights enhance our comprehension of the strategic use of background music in e-commerce shopping contexts. Based on the conclusions of the research, a better auditory experience can be created for users in the shopping scene in the future. In terms of business application and marketing strategy, it can also guide merchants to strategically use music to influence mood changes and promote product consumption.

Experiencing psychological stress due to the demands of modern life is common, but engaging with innovative digital art has the potential to alleviate this stress and provide a source of relaxation. Moreover, the interactive and dynamic nature of digital art offers diverse and distinctive experiences. The aim of this article is to determine if the process of transferring dynamic digital art images while playing happy and sad music can have an impact on an individual's stress level. For the experiment, two congruent audio-visual digital art videos were used as stimuli to assess their potential stress-relieving effects. A total of 24 participants were invited to participate and were divided into 3 groups. To induce a stress response in the participants, the Trier Social Stress Test was employed in the experiment. Following this, two separate groups were shown videos with different emotional tones, namely joy and sadness. The third group was the control group. The study assessed changes in participants' stress levels before and after the experiment using two tools: the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Empatica E4. According to the study, both happy and sad videos were effective in reducing stress levels. The findings of this research could inform the development of digital art as a potential tool for stress management and emotional intervention.

Abstract The authors assume that the stress state can be expressed by a value, SMB, and are trying to develop a method to change the value in an appropriate direction by music. This paper compares the results of the music therapy experiment conducted in 2022 with those in 2020. Subjects are recruited and classified into four groups according to whether they know the pieces played and whether they like the music. Some subjects wear the pulse oximeter throughout the concert. Other methods are employed to measure the stress states of all subjects at the beginning, the intermission, and the end of the concert. Based on the experiment, the possibility of prescribing classical music to patients is recognized. The same music has different effects on the subjects, depending on the type of music and the subject’s characteristics such as gender and whether he/she likes the music. The effects also differ depending on the piano player. In other words, prescribing music would not be simply selecting songs according to the symptoms. In the future, the music database will be grown up and the experimental methods using public concerts will be improved. Some of the stress measurement methods employed in this experiment may be combined to determine SMD.

Geelong and the Surf Coast are treated here as one entity although there are marked differences between the two communities. Sitting on the home of the Wathaurong Aboriginal group, this G21 region is geographically diverse. Geelong serviced a wool industry on its western plains, while manufacturing and its seaport past has left it as a post-industrial city. The Surf Coast has benefitted from the sea change phenomenon. Both communities have fast growing populations and have benefitted from their proximity to Melbourne. They are deeply integrated with this major urban centre. The early establishment of digital infrastructure proved an advantage to certain sectors. All creative industries are represented well in Geelong while many creatives in Torquay are embedded in the high profile and economically dominant surfing industry. The Geelong community is serviced well by its own creative industries with well-established advertising firms, architects, bookshops, gaming arcades, movie houses, music venues, newspaper headquarters, brand new and iconic performing and visual arts centres, libraries and museums, television and radio all accessible in its refurbished downtown area. Co-working spaces, collective practices and entrepreneurial activity are evident throughout the region.
