Durant la Grande Guerre, le potentiel symbolique de l’enfant fut utilisé de manière abondante, imposant de fait à cette jeunesse française un rôle bien trop lourd à porter. Loin du champ de bataille, tous les moyens sont alors mis en œuvre pour faire intégrer à la nouvelle génération, une haine viscérale de l’ennemi ; c’est ainsi que les parutions illustrées pour la jeunesse apparaissent comme des instruments patriotiques redoutables. Pour autant, si les enfants sont avant tout perçus comme des motifs d’innocence et de pureté, la réalité des années 1914-1918 est toute autre : l’iconographie victimaire est certes bien présente, mais l’exaltation patriotique la surpasse véritablement. En effet, ces journaux enfantins n’hésitent pas à montrer des cadavres ou des exactions commises envers de jeunes bambins, tandis que certains jouets exhibent la barbarie ou la bêtise de l’ennemi. Plus encore, ces petites histoires imagées encouragent les enfants à piéger, empoisonner ou tuer des soldats allemands au péril de leur propre vie. Mais d’autres documents sont à mettre en lumière. Ainsi en est-il du conte du Petit Chaperon Rouge, dont les illustrations ont été adaptées au contexte guerrier par Guy Arnoux et Charles Moreau-Vauthier : le loup prend l’apparence d’un officier allemand ; le Petit Chaperon Rouge est vêtu d’une robe tricolore et la grand-mère se nomme à présent Grand’Mère La Paix. Autant de productions qui ne laissent aucun doute sur l’impact qu’une telle iconographie pouvait avoir sur les enfants, dans un contexte aussi troublé que fût celui de la Grande Guerre.

The last three years as the co-Chairs of the IUCN–SSC–African Elephant Specialist Group (AfESG/or referred to here as ‘the Group’) has been extremely busy but enjoyable and fulfilling. We feel indebted to our highly skilled and dedicated Group members who are always supportive and on their toes to promote our mission of conserving Africa’s elephants throughout their range. The Group’s input coupled with the unwavering support of the governments of range states, donors and multi-lateral agencies has enabled us to make significant strides as a Group in the last three years. We therefore begin the new 2021–2024 IUCN quadrennium on a strong footing. More so, we have strengthened our membership in numbers, additional skillsets and by building collegiality with governments and multi-lateral agencies. Our nine working groups and task forces are poised to tackle some thirty targets which we developed around our goals and aligned to the five key components of Assess, Plan, Act, Communicate and Network in the IUCN’s Species Strategic Plan. Here, we further elaborate on our targets and plans for 2021–2024 quadrennium and provide updates on the progress of some of the issues we reported on in Pachyderm 61. Key among them include AfESG’s decision in 2021 to treat the African elephants as two separate species and the subsequent reflection of this shift in the recently published IUCN Red List re-assessments of African elephants. The two species are also under consideration in the ongoing iteration of the next African Elephant Status Report. We hope these approaches will help users focus appropriate conservation attention/measures for the critically endangered forest elephant and the endangered savannah elephant and to put both their numbers and habitats back on a thriving trajectory. There are of course imminent implications and consequences of this shift that we will have to identify and deal with. We highlight the long-term sustainability and revamping plans for the African Elephant Database (AED)—our official repository and most authoritative source of information on African elephant surveys. We also report on the appointment of the Red List Authority Coordinator for African elephants. Les trois dernières années en tant que coprésidents du Groupe UICN-CSE-Groupe de Spécialistes de l’Éléphant d’Afrique (GSEAf/ou appelé ici « le Groupe ») ont été extrêmement chargées mais agréables et enrichissantes. Nous nous sentons redevables à nos membres du Groupe hautement qualifiés et dévoués qui sont toujours solidaires et prêts à promouvoir notre mission de conservation des éléphants d'Afrique dans toute leur aire de répartition. La contribution du Groupe, associée au soutien indéfectible des gouvernements des États de l'aire de répartition, des donateurs et des agences multilatérales, nous a permis de faire des progrès significatifs en tant que Groupe au cours des trois dernières années. Nous commençons donc le nouveau quadriennat 2021–2024 de l'UICN sur des bases solides. Time seems to gallop by faster nowadays! It will be two years in September/October 2020 since the Chair of the Species Survival Commission of the IUCN, Jon-Paul Rodriguez appointed us to co-Chair the African Elephant Specialist Group (AfESG/ or here referred to as ‘The Group’). We would like to specially appreciate our membership for the volunteer dedication and commitment in driving the agenda and the mission of our specialist group, which is to “to promote the long-term conservation of Africa's elephants throughout their range”. We indeed enjoy working with you as a team. Well done and keep it up! In this Issue of Pachyderm we report on new activities and provide an update on some of the activities we reported on in the previous Pachyderm issue 60. The new activities include the 8th AfESG members’ meeting, contribution of the AfESG to the African Elephant Action Plan’s potential review process, strengthening of membership and establishment of task forces and working groups, the AfESG’s participation and contribution at CITES CoP18, and synergies with relevant institutions, among others. The updates are on the African elephant database (AED), Red Listing process and taxonomy. We also comment on the effects of Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic to the conservation of elephants. Ce Le temps semble filer de plus en plus vite de nos jours! Cela fera deux ans en septembre/octobre 2020 que le président de la Commission de la survie des espèces de l'UICN, Jon-Paul Rodriguez nous a désigné pour co-présider le Groupe de spécialistes de l'éléphant d'Afrique (GSEAf / ou ici dénommé « Le Groupe »). La lutte contre l’antibiorésistance, à présent reconnue comme un problème public mondial majeur, passe par l’utilisation raisonnée des antimicrobiens. Diminuer leur utilisation est ainsi un défi pour l’agriculture, en particulier pour les productions animales hors sol, dont les espèces figuraient en 2013 en France parmi les plus exposées aux antimicrobiens. La recherche de leviers d’action permettant de réduire l’usage des antibiotiques constitue donc un enjeu important. L’objectif de la thèse était précisément d’identifier des leviers d’action pour diminuer l’usage des antibiotiques, en prenant pour cas d’étude une organisée : la filière poulet de chair Label Rouge. Pour cela une méthode pluridisciplinaire associant la sociologie et l’épidémiologie a été utilisée.Dans un premier temps, une étude sociologique par entretiens semi-directifs a été conduite auprès d’éleveurs, de techniciens et de vétérinaires, pour étudier les représentations et les pratiques des acteurs autour de l’antibiothérapie. Elle a permis de mettre en évidence l’adéquation de l’impératif de réduire l’usage des antibiotiques avec l’identité professionnelle des éleveurs. Outre les améliorations techniques, l’accompagnement des éleveurs par des conseillers avec qui ils ont établi une relation de confiance a permis d’aider les éleveurs à changer leurs pratiques vers moins d’antibiotiques.Ensuite, une étude pharmaco-épidémiologique de type cas témoin dans 260 lots a été menée par administration d’un questionnaire en élevage, afin d’identifier les facteurs associés à l’usage des antibiotiques. Des outils techniques utilisés en prévention depuis longtemps - comme le papier démarrage- ou depuis plus récemment –comme les produits phytothérapeutiques - se sont révélés être associés à une diminution de l’usage des antibiotiques. La perception des éleveurs de l’état de santé de leur lot était également significativement associée à l’usage d’antibiotiques. Enfin, une étude sociologique menée par entretiens semi-directifs avec des responsables techniques et des directeurs de trois organisations de production a permis d’étudier les dispositifs mis en place par les organisations de production pour diminuer leur usage d’antibiotiques. Les démarches mises en place par les OP étudiées pour diminuer l’usage des antibiotiques sont variables, récentes, et rarement constituées d’outils spécifiquement orientés vers la réduction des usages. La seule démarche étudiée constituant une véritable stratégie de réduction repose principalement sur des outils organisationnels pour enrôler l’ensemble des acteurs et coordonner les réseaux, en les incitant à mettre en place les outils techniques. L’étude montre le rôle important que jouent certaines OP dans la démédication, de par les leviers multiples dont elles disposent auprès des éleveurs.La combinaison de différentes approches dans ce travail de thèse, empruntées à la sociologie et à l’épidémiologie, a permis d’éclairer différents aspects des déterminants associés aux usages d’antibiotiques en élevage de volailles. Cette étude ouvre par ailleurs la voie à de nouvelles interrogations, en particulier concernant le rôle des acteurs privés –en particulier ceux de l’aval – sur la santé animale en générale, et l’usage des antibiotiques en particulier
Antimicrobial resistance is now well recognized as a global and major public issue, and as such has been tackled through antibiotic stewardship. Decreasing antimicrobial use is a great challenge for livestock farming, especially for intensive production systems, which were among the more exposed in 2013. It is of great interest to search for drivers enabling to reduce antimicrobial use. The thesis objectives were thus to identify drivers for change, in an organized production system: Label Rouge traditional free-range broiler farming. A multi-disciplinary approach, combining sociology with epidemiology was used.First, a sociological study based on semi-directive interviews with farmers, production technicians and veterinarians was carried out in order to study professionals’ perceptions and practices related to antimicrobial use. Results highlight the adequacy between the imperative of decreasing antimicrobial use and farmers’ professional identity. Besides technical improvements, the coaching of farmers by counsellors whom they trust was also found to play an important role in changing their practices towards lower antimicrobial use.Second, a pharmaco-epidemiological case-control study was carried out. 260 flocks of broilers were investigated thanks to on-farm questionnaires, in order to identify the factors associated with antimicrobial use. Preventive technical tools such as herbal drugs or chicken paper were associated to a decreased use of antimicrobials. The way farmers judge their flock health was also significantly associated to antimicrobial use.Finally, a sociological study involving semi-directive interviews with directors and production technicians from three farmer organizations enabled to study the strategies developed by farmer organizations to reduce antimicrobial use. We found that the studied farmer organizations had various and relatively new approaches, which are hardly ever constituted of tools specifically designed to decrease antimicrobial use. Only one approach was a real and complete strategy, mostly based on organizational tools aiming to enroll the actors and coordinate the networks and have them apply the technical tools. The study shows that some farmer organizations can play an important role in antimicrobial use reduction, thanks to the different drivers they have to encourage farmers to change their practices.The combination of sociological and epidemiological approaches used in this study enabled to highlight a wide range of drivers for antimicrobial use in broiler breeding. This study also raises further questions on the role played by private stakeholders – such as distributors - in animal health in general, and antimicrobial use in particular

Le caractère chair rouge chez la pomme est associé à la synthèse et à l’accumulation d'anthocyanes. Les bases génétiques du développement de la chair rouge sont identifiées. Cependant, les modèles actuels n'expliquent pas les variations observées dans l'intensité et la distribution de la pigmentation rouge au sein de la chair du fruit. Dans cette étude, nous avons développé une approche multifactorielle combinant l’analyse d’image et le profilage des composés phénoliques afin de caractériser la pigmentation de la chair chez la pomme. Cette méthodologie a été appliquée pour étudier la diversité phénotypique, dans cinq familles hybrides F1 ségrégeant pour le caractère chair rouge (450 génotypes).Nous avons utilisé des descripteurs colorimétriques issus de l'espace CIEL*a*b* pour évaluer la coloration chez les hybrides. Nous avons également développé un script d’analyse d'image basée sur l’analyse d’histogrammes pour évaluer les motifs de pigmentation et étudier l'héritabilité de ce caractère.Des variations importantes dans les teneurs en composés phénoliques chez les hybrides ont été identifiées. Des analyses ciblées ont été réalisées pour quantifier ces composés par UPLC-UV sur deux années de récolte (2021 et 2022). Nous proposons un modèle incluant le pH et les teneurs en composés phénoliques pour décrire l’intensité de coloration de la chair. Le déterminisme génétique de la chair rouge a ensuite été étudié. Les individus ont été génotypés via la puce SNP Illumina Infinium 20K et des analyses de QTL basées sur le pedigree ont été menées avec le logiciel FlexQTL™. Notre analyse a permis d'identifier de nouveaux loci associés au développement de la chair rouge et à la présence de motifs de pigmentation
Red-flesh trait in apple is associated with anthocyanin accumulation. The genetic basis of color development has been widely analysed ; however, current models do not explain the observed variations in red pigmentation intensity and distribution within fruit flesh. We developed a multifactorial approach to gain knowledge on the control of the red flesh pigmentation in apple. This methodology was applied to investigate the phenotypic diversity in five inter-connected F1 hybrid families segregating for this trait (450 genotypes) by combining image-based phenotyping with the determination of several biochemical traits that influence color expression. We used image-based phenotyping to evaluatered color in progenies using color parameters from CIEL*a*b* color space. We also developed a histogram-based image analysis to assess patterns of color variation in red-flesh apples and to study the inheritance of this trait. Important variations in phenolic compound profiles among hybrid families were identified. Targeted analyses were performed to quantify these compounds by UPLC-UV over two years of fruit harvest (2021 and 2022). As a result, we propose a model including pH and phenolic compound contents to describe red flesh color development. The genetic determinism of red-flesh was then investigated. Individuals were genotyped via the Illumina Infinium 20K array and pedigree-based QTL analyses were conducted with FlexQTL™ software. Our analysis allowed the identification of new loci and the determination of allelic combinations favouring the development of red pigmentation and color patterns

The flail mower is a piece of agricultural equipment that uses bladed attachments rotating around a drum to cut down bushes and grassy terrain. One major drawback to the flail mower is the rapid wear that happens almost immediately when any sort of rocks, gravel, or rough terrain are encountered. The goal of this project was to design and manufacture a prototype of a machine that could level rough terrain through repeating impacts as opposed to cutting with blades. The final design was a chain flail mower, a piece of equipment designed to level rough terrain that uses chains to repeatedly bludgeon rocks, gravel, and debris. The designed chain flail mower was assembled into an existing commercially available snow blower for testing.

Ce projet de thèse consistait à synthétiser de nouveaux bio-conjugués Lipide-Polymère fluorescents émettant dans le rouge lointain, composés d'une chaîne polymère portant à la fois de nombreux chromophores en position latérale et un lipide en extrémité de chaîne. La structure de ces bio-conjugués est basée sur des copolymères poly(N-acryloylmorpholine-co-N-acryloxysuccinimide), hydrophiles, réactifs, modulables et d'architecture contrôlée obtenus par le procédé RAFT. Les copolymères réactifs ont ensuite été utilisés pour le couplage, en position latérale, de chromophores émettant dans le rouge lointain. La stratégie utilisée pour la synthèse des bio-conjugués se divise en trois étapes : la synthèse d'Agents de Transfert de Chaîne (ATC) fonctionnalisés avec un lipide suivant un protocole déjà décrit suite à des travaux de notre équipe, et dont les étapes de purification ont été améliorées afin d'obtenir des ATC les plus purs possible (90% de pureté molaire) ; l'utilisation de ces ATC fonctionnels pour la synthèse de polymères α fonctionnels, et enfin, le couplage covalent, rapide et efficace, de chromophores en position latérale. Il a été mis en évidence que les ATC lipidiques permettent un très bon contrôle de la copolymérisation des monomères NAM et NAS. L'utilisation de la composition azéotropique pour ce couple de monomère permet également d'obtenir des chaînes polymère de microstructure très contrôlée et présentant des valeurs de Mn comprises entre 5 900 et 33 200 g.mol-1. Les propriétés optiques des bio-conjugués ont été déterminées, ce qui a permis de mettre en évidence que ces propriétés, et notamment le rendement quantique de fluorescence, sont très sensibles à la structure des bio-conjugués synthétisés. Tous les bio-conjugués présentent des brillances améliorées (jusqu'à 13 000 M-1.cm-1 dans l'eau et 50 0000 M-1.cm-1 dans CHCl3) par rapport à celle du chromophore. La capacité des bio-conjugués à interagir avec les bicouches lipidiques a été mise en évidence à travers l'utilisation de systèmes modèles (SUVs, LUVs et GUVs). Enfin, les évaluations biologiques réalisées ont montré à la fois une absence de cytotoxicité des bio-conjugués et une capacité de ces derniers à être internalisés rapidement (< 10 min) au sein de différentes lignées de cellules vivantes.

Abstract During the late nineteenth century, thousands of diggers, prospectors, merchants, and dealers extracted and shipped over 50 million carats of rough diamonds from South Africa to Europe. The primary supplier to the world, South Africa’s diamond fields became one of the formative sites of modern capitalist production. At each stage of the diamond’s route through the British empire and beyond—from Cape Town to London, from Amsterdam to New York City—carbon gems were primarily traded, appraised, manufactured, and sold by Jews. A Brilliant Commodity traces how once-peripheral Jewish populations became the central architects of a new, global exchange of diamonds that connected African sites of supply, European manufacturing centers, American retailers, and Western consumers. Centuries of restrictions had limited Jews to trade and finance, businesses that relied heavily on internal networks. Jews were well positioned to become key players in the earliest stage of the diamond trade and its growth into a global industry, a development fueled by technological advancements, a dramatic rise in the demand of luxury goods, and an abundance of rough stones. Mercantile and familial ties across continents aided Jews in creating a highly successful commodity chain that included buyers, brokers, cutters, factory owners, financiers, and retailers. Working within a diasporic ethnic community that bridged city and countryside, metropole and colony, Jews helped build a flourishing diamond industry, notably Hatton Garden in London and the Diamond District of New York City, and a place for themselves in the modern world.

After preliminaries about electron properties, and definitions in magnetism, one treats the magnetism of mononuclear complexes, in particular spin cross-over, showing the role of cooperativity and the sensitivity to external perturbations. Orbital interactions and exchange interaction are explained in binuclear model systems, using orbital overlap and orthogonality concepts to explain antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic coupling. The phenomenologically useful Spin Hamiltonian is defined. The concepts are then applied to extended molecular magnetic systems, leading to molecular magnetic materials of various dimensionalities exhibiting bulk ferro- or ferrimagnetism. An illustration is provided by Prussian Blue analogues. Magnetic anisotropy is introduced. It is shown that in some cases, a slow relaxation of magnetization arises and gives rise to appealing single-ion magnets, single-molecule magnets or single-chain magnets, a route to store information at the molecular level.

AbstractTotal synthesis of several ellagitannins, strictinin (1), pterocarinin C (2), cercidinin A (3), and tellimagrandin II (19), is described. The key issues for the synthetic strategy rely on the catalyst-controlled site-selective acylation and stereoselective glycosylation with unprotected glucose. Total synthesis of punicafolin (5) with a glucose core in 1C4 (chair) conformation and macaranganin (30) with a glucose core in 5S1 (skew boat) conformation was also accomplished based on a similar unconventional retrosynthetic route. For success in the synthesis of 5 and 30, the flipping behavior of the pyranose ring from the stable 4C1 conformer to the unstable axial-rich 1C4 conformer is the key. Because no protective groups for glucose were employed throughout the synthesis of these natural glycosides, the total synthesis was achieved in extremely short overall steps.

AbstractThe previous contribution uses the k-means procedure to create clusters. It converts into a chain route when the threshold content goes beyond the energy of the devices in the system. The information transmitter fuel includes the power of the machine circuitry and the magnitude of facts communication and blowout. The vibrancy helps in communication circuitry. The knowledge packages ship to the destination. The architecture has two stages. The groups form during the clustering stage. The Optimal CBR method uses the k-means procedure to construct groups. It selects the cluster head based on the Euclidean length and device fuel. The verge posted by the group head to the individual set associates is the characteristic weight above which the machine transmits the data to the head. When two-thirds of the devices are lifeless, the instruments use the greedy procedure to construct a chain-like multiple-hop methodology to reach the base station. A beacon transmission is sent by the base station to the active devices in the chaining stage (when the energy of the nodes is lower). The base station creates the path using multiple-hop chain routing and the greedy technique. The devices send the notification to the base station using the chain track. The proposed work increases security by 9.67% when transmitting data and by 11.38% (device getting compromised).

AbstractThe airfreight industry of shipping goods with special handling needs, also known as special cargo, suffers from nontransparent shipping processes, resulting in inefficiency. The LARA project (Lane Analysis and Route Advisor) aims at addressing these limitations and bringing innovation in special cargo route planning so as to improve operational deficiencies and customer services. In this chapter, we discuss the special cargo domain knowledge elicitation and modeling into an ontology. We also present research into cargo incidents, namely, automatic classification of incidents in free-text reports and experiments in detecting significant features associated with specific cargo incident types. Our work mainly addresses two of the main technical priority areas defined by the European Big Data Value (BDV) Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, namely, the application of data analytics to improve data understanding and providing optimized architectures for analytics of data-at-rest and data-in-motion, the overall goal is to develop technologies contributing to the data value chain in the logistics sector. It addresses the horizontal concerns Data Analytics, Data Processing Architectures, and Data Management of the BDV Reference Model. It also addresses the vertical dimension Big Data Types and Semantics.

Utilizing sustainable energy sources is crucial for expanding the range of solutions available to meet the growing energy demand and reducing reliance on environmentally damaging and depleting conventional fuels. Biosolids, a type of biomass, are generated as secondary effluent during wastewater treatment process in municipal and industrial sites. These solids possess the potential to serve as a sustainable energy source due to their richness of carbon. For an extended period, biosolids have been landfilled, even though it can be considered a wasteful use of a precious resource and a possible mean for contamination to the food supply chain. This has served as an extra impetus to investigate the potential for harnessing the capabilities of these substances. While many research studies have looked at different ways to put biomass waste to use, very little has been written on biosolids, especially those derived from industrial sources. This research assesses the feasibility of transforming GTL derived biosolids into value-added commodities that can serve as raw materials in chemical manufacturing or be employed energy generation. The study primarily examines widely recognized thermal conversion processes, pyrolysis and gasification. An evaluation is carried out to analyze the economic, technological, and environmental aspects of the treatment methods utilizing these technologies. The aim is to demonstrate the potential of GTL biosolids conversion and to determine associated costs and environmental impacts. The ASPEN simulation tool is utilized to model thermal treatment pathways, allowing for the generation of economic and environmental estimations for each route.

In order to evaluate a wheelchair design it is necessary to look at the capabilities of the user and the chair’s intended purpose. Whilst some chairs are only required to provide infrequent mobility indoors, others need to enable the user to travel great distances out doors over rough terrain. In this respect the chair should be considered in the same manner as any other ‘inclusive’ product (or be useable by all). There is a need to better understand the capabilities of different users and how this affects their ability to use a wheelchair for the express purpose required. A detailed experimental investigation was carried out into the wheelchair propulsion characteristics of people with paraplegia and tetraplegia. In this investigation, subjects’ posture, applied forces, and their strategies in applying forces to the wheel rims were studied. Three distinct postures and corresponding techniques were observed and subsequently modelled in a constraint-modelling environment. Here rules were developed that allowed these differing postures to be applied to a manikin representation and their effect upon the wheelchair mobility evaluated. From this study the needs for these classes of individuals were identified in order to allow the wheelchairs to be evaluated. Where conflicts existed between the chair and the user, different modifications in both chair and posture were proposed and assessed. Where no simple modifications exist such a study can provide the basis for a more radical and improved design.

Abstract To investigate the technical feasibility of integrating biomass pyrolysis, char gasification, and oxy-fuel combustion, Aspen Plus was applied to evaluate the performance of different systems. Three technical routes were proposed: “Route 1” and “Route 2” involve coupling oxy-fuel combustion with biomass pyrolysis and char gasification, aiming to utilize char gasification for recovering high-temperature flue gas, while “Route 3” only couples oxy-fuel combustion with biomass pyrolysis. Energy saving and fossil CO2 emissions were compared across different technical routes, and economic evaluations were conducted. Two feedstock types (Reed straw or Municipal solid waste, MSW) were selected for analysis. The results indicate that “Route 2” saves more NG consumption, accompanying an increase in flue gas flow rate. Due to the poor quality of MSW, the waste char gasification temperature is 10% lower than that of biochar, resulting in a lower combustible gas content (CO+H2) in syngas from waste char gasification compared to biochar gasification by 18% under identical feedstock input (1t/h) and flue gas recycle ratio (10% or 20%). Biomass demonstrates an advantage in reducing fossil CO2 emissions compared to MSW, particularly evident in “Route 2-Bio” where fossil CO2 emissions decrease by 95% compared to the “Normal” case. Without factoring in CO2 tax, the price of biomass is significant. In the scenario of a 46 tons/day oxy-fuel glass furnace, “Route 2” offers the most promising OPEX savings. As long as the price of biomass raw materials is below 870 RMB/ton, it can lead to OPEX savings. If CO2 tax is considered, biomass as a feedstock proves to be more competitive than MSW in OPEX savings.

Avian influenza (AI) viruses cause infections primarily in bird species, although they are capable of spill-over infections into mammalian species, including humans. Many different strains of AI viruses are found in birds, but they can be divided into two groups based on their virulence in poultry: high pathogenicity (HPAI) and low pathogenicity (LPAI); both are capable of quickly spreading through a flock. HPAI infections often lead to severe clinical signs and high mortality while LPAI infections may not present with any clinical signs. Certain strains of AI have been associated with human case fatality rates of over 50%. Since October 2021, there has been a substantial increase in the number of AI infections reported both at commercial premises and in wild birds in the UK. The last FSA assessment on the risk to consumers of exposure to AI from the food chain was in 2015. Since the increase in infections may lead to an increased likelihood that poultry products from infected birds are entering the retail market, an updated risk assessment was commissioned to ensure advice relating to the consumption of poultry products is still appropriate. This risk assessment did not focus on the currently circulating outbreak strain but considered any AI virus. This assessment considered the risk of consumers acquiring an AI infection from poultry products, including commercial poultry, game birds, and table eggs. The risk of home processing of birds was also considered. The farm to fork risk pathway spanned from the probability that products from infected poultry would reach market to the ability of AI to cause infections in humans via the gastrointestinal route.

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a complex legal-institutional system that, on the one hand, offers industrialized countries options for cost-effective emission reductions and, on the other, provides developing countries with opportunities for sustainable development. Investors face the difficulty of identifying suitable CDM projects from approximately 130 possible host countries and nearly 60 possible project activities. In order to develop points of reference for strategic investments, this paper identifies and categorizes the risks arising in the value creation process of bilateral energy projects into four action-related levels. At the host level, the focus is on political-institutional and sector-specific risks, while at the investor state level, the legal design of the CDM's complementary function is relevant. The project level covers technology- and process-related risks, with the identification of the reference case and the proof of additionality posing particular problems. The future design of the CDM and the reform of the procedure at the UNFCCC level pose a fundamental risk. A two-stage assessment procedure is proposed for risk assessment: a rough analysis captures sociographic, climate policy, institutional and sector-specific criteria of the host. The differentiation of the project stage allows the localization of the project in the value chain and a differentiation regarding the use of methods. The assessment of project registration is based on the methods used and gives recognition rates per method and project category; project performance is measured in terms of the ratio of emission reductions actually realized to those planned in the project documentation. A detailed analysis following the coarse analysis provides qualitative guidance for project evaluation. These include the Executive Board's methodological principles, correct application of methodologies, identification of the reference case, proof of additionality, as well as the financial conditions of the relevant sector and publicity-related aspects. Despite individual hosts and project technologies, the developed two-step risk analysis allows, with relatively little effort and in line with business practice, an initial assessment of CDM project risks, so that overall it lays a fundamental building block for the elaboration of a strategic implementation and sustainable investment under the CDM.

This brief is intended to establish the concept and quantify the size of the "underserved middle" in the agricultural value chains of sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Asia; this is the sector underserved by financial, policy and market-making institutions. The aim is to build on existing concepts and published information to provide clarity to the investor community and their financing partners on the definition and size of the underserved middle, as well as on existing opportunities for investment, as identified by the Commercial Agriculture for Smallholders and Agribusiness (CASA) programme. The underserved middle represents a diverse range of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at all stages of the value chain - though predominantly downstream of production - characterized as being unable to exploit the potential to scale up that exists in the market due to their effective exclusion from normal market-supporting policies, financing and institutions. This exclusion is largely due to the size of the enterprises: they are typically larger than micro enterprises, which can self-finance and operate successfully within their local social, political and economic ecosystem, but are smaller than large companies, which are attractive to external financiers and have the capacity to engage with and influence decision makers and institutions. Although figures are not available for the number of agricultural SMEs or their specific financing needs, very rough estimates of the financing gap range from $170 billion annually for all smallholder financing needs in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Asia to $100 billion for agricultural SMEs in sub-Saharan Africa alone. More recent thinking is currently being done by Reardon and Jayne, and by institutions such as the World Bank on the complexity of the underserved middle, particularly in terms of access to finance, institutions and policymakers. Whilst formal financing remains difficult to obtain and is expensive, informal sources are likely to be more important than previously thought. Both the demand and supply of formal and informal financing vary considerably by type of enterprise and funding need. However, investors and other stakeholders also need to consider how changes to policy, regulation and infrastructure will unshackle excluded SMEs and release their ability to scale themselves up.
