Much has been written on the history of the railways and other transport forms in Ireland, from technological, economic, social and labour history viewpoints. However, the history of another important nineteenth-century transport form, the hackney carriage, remains neglected. In this article, it will be argued, using the hackney carriage business in Cork as a case study, that the hackney carriage was an important vehicle (both literal and metaphorical) in facilitating Cork’s development as a modern city with an urban centre surrounded by a suburban hinterland. Further, by examining in detail the workings of the Hackney Carriage Committee of the Cork Corporation, I will argue that the hackney carriage drivers, colloquially referred to as ginglemen or jinglemen, were for the most part a precarious working class who were policed by the Corporation, the Hackney Carriage Committee and the by-law governing their livelihoods. As such, the bye-law and the apparatus that implemented it was a form of liberal governmentality and social control over a portion of Cork’s working class.

This paper is an overview on the location and concentration of housing types in the Tokyo district, with particular focus on danchi and "mansions" (particularly "tower mansions"). The focus is placed on these two types of housing, the danchi developed by the Japan Housing Corporation, a public housing corporation, and the Tower Mansions developed by the private developers. Neither suburban detached houses, nor the government-subsidized housing other than that of the Kodan, were included in the analysis in order to keep our argument intact. Danchi (public housing estates) built from 1955 to 1970 were mostly built by replacing forests or agricultural areas in the suburbs. Land developments by Kodan as well as by private developers at that time had been concentrated in the inlands. The situation changed after the year 2000, when tower mansions, a building type that featured high-rise and high-density apartment buildings, allowed construction on much smaller plots of land than those in the suburbs, promoting brownfield developments near the city. Consequently, danchi, much of which are rental, and publicly owned, were built in inland, while the tower mansions, essentially privately owned, were located near the city, and near the waterfront. These two contrasting housing examples must be highlighted when studying the state of contemporary housing in Tokyo.

This article examines the depiction of three impoverished Lagosian slums in the controversial British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) documentary, Welcome to Lagos, which highlights the negative impacts of globalised capitalism on urban culture in Nigeria's commercial centre and biggest city. In recent times scholarship on postcolonial urbanisation has been marked by an important shift in focus from economic concerns to interest in the peculiar cultural dimensions of life in postcolonial cities. As this article argues, however, dominant depictions of postcolonial cities continue to highlight ways in which cultural responses to the harsh effects of late capitalism in such cities reflect economic strategies of what Mike Davis calls “informal survivalism.”

In the period 1919–22, two events catalyzed General Motors’ nascent dominance in the automotive industry: the company built a monumental headquarters in Detroit, designed by Albert Kahn Associates and located on what was then the periphery of the city; and a restructuring of the corporation was enacted at the behest of several newly appointed executives, including Alfred P. Sloan. In “Actual Center of Detroit”: Method, Management, and Decentralization in Albert Kahn's General Motors Building, Michael Abrahamson explores the conjunction between these events, arguing that both manifest a struggle with immense size. To cope with the bigness of buildings, corporations, and urban environments, GM and the Kahn firm developed strategies that set the agenda for architectural practice, corporate management, and urban development for the twentieth-century United States. Together, these strategies reveal the entwined forces that influenced the design of the General Motors Building.

Fire hazard is now a global problem, particularly in densely populated areas in developing countries like Bangladesh. Fire hazards frequently happen in urban and rural areas of Bangladesh. Fires at several shopping malls prove that the safety measures in the shopping center are not at standard level. This study aimed to assess the fire hazard vulnerability of shopping centers in Rangpur City Corporation, Bangladesh. The study area was surveyed and analyzed with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing along with primary field data regarding existing planning rules and regulations of the Government of Bangladesh. All the structures of the study area were assessed and categorized into four class ranges from very high to low, according to some vulnerability criteria defined by safety codes. The study found that about 30% of the structures fall under very high, 50% fall under high vulnerability and 20% fall under moderate vulnerability class. The most significant issue was the low vulnerable structures of the shopping centers to face fire hazards. Most of the structures fall under the danger classes that can be improved by the direct intervention of the state agency.

Abstract. Roads play a crucial role in the urban spatial structure. A place's development and growth depend on the road network connectivity and accessibility being the socio-economic and transportation carrier. It involves the mobility of people and goods from one place to another. The choice of mode of travel depends on the living standards, connectivity, and vicinity to the work area. The study uses satellite data to analyze road network connectivity using the connectivity indices of Mangalore City Corporation, a port city in India. The connectivity indices alpha, beta, gamma, and eta showed the Area's good connectivity with proper roads and interconnectivity. Using Dijkstra's algorithm, the least cost path is identified on which the spatial mapping of the travel information is made. The travel information raster served the commuter in knowing the time, distance, and cost of modes from all possible origins to each city center. Specifically, it serves as the base map for bus routes, their cost, and travel time for significant city bus stations. The cost of travel, Duration, and distance information is mapped for two-wheeler and four-wheeler commuters. The study used the Modis Land Use Land Cover Data to identify inaccessible road network areas.

Shenzhen is one of the most dynamically growing cities in the world with a population of more than 10 million. Situated in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China it is in the powerhouse of the global economy. Some decades ago Shenzhen was a small fishing village only, however, after its designation as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) the city has gone through rapid urbanization and industrial development. Therefore, currently, Shenzhen is one of the leading economic hubs of China, an important gateway of the large Chinese economy, and a sub-provincial administrative centre in the PRD. Sungang-Quingshuihe (SQ) is a neighbourhood of 2.5 square kilometres, in Louhu district in the east of Shenzhen. The landscape system of SQ has been largely destroyed and fragmented by developments. Our main goal is to redesign SQ neighbourhood for an innovative growth centre of Shenzhen. We envisage SQ as a liveable area with new and modern functions for international residents who work in higher education, information communication industry, medical services, R&D facilities of multinational corporations, and research-oriented start-up companies. In order to accomplish this vision it is required to design new transportation system, public buildings, housing, green corridors and parklands.

Water delivery service is the responsibility of all the institutions in every city. According to the Sustainable Development Agenda (SDA), every citizen has the right to have access to drinking water at all times. The objective of the study was to identify the impacts of Urban Water Corporation in the delivery of water services, determine public opinion on water service delivery, and assess the challenges Urban Water is facing in delivering water services in Wau Municipality. The study adopted an explorative design for a survey to examine the research questions. The target population was 120 people, which includes the communities and staff of the urban water corporation. The study applied the stratified random technique to the same group of elements, from which a sample size of 92 respondents was selected via the Yamane 1967 formula. Purposive sampling and simple random sampling methods were adopted in the selection of participants. The questionnaire was used as the main primary data collection instrument, whose validity and reliability were tested by Marial Ajieth. The data was analyzed quantitatively by using descriptive statistics, frequency tables, and percentages. The study found that the impact of water service delivery by the urban water corporation is only seen in the main municipality center; other locations were not impacted. The opinion of the public about the water delivery service in Wau municipality was rated with a mixed reaction, where one respondent said they were happy about water services and the other said they were not happy. The study noted that the lack of funds to support water supply in Wau Municipality was a major concern. The study recommended that there is a need to ensure the provision of enough and safe drinking water, prioritize that the majority of citizens get water from the water system more than wells, that the urban water corporation should provide enough water for all public use in Wau Municipality, provide funds to support water supply, and ensure that there is equitable water distribution for all locations in Wau Municipality. Pregnancy is a joyous but stressful phase in every woman’s life as it takes a ten-month-long journey. Support and caring attitude from family members and others, along with regular ante-natal treatment during pregnancy, is essential for every woman because it will protect the health of the unborn baby and future mother. However, in Bangladesh, patriarchal social structure and cultural components bring unequal treatment for women even when they feel sick. So, this qualitative study was conducted to explore the experiences of pregnant women living in the slum area of Sylhet city corporation, Bangladesh. Data were collected purposively from pregnant women during gestational weeks 36–38 who came for treatment at the Urban Primary Health Care Service Delivery Center of Shimantik (NGO). Ten in-depth interviews were conducted through a semi-structured interview schedule, and then collected data were thematically analysed. Data were presented under four themes: role of husband and family members during pregnancy, challenging circumstances within and outside of the family, the reason for the adverse social concern arising and the strategies employed to deal with the hostile condition. This study recommends that there should be a professional counsellor in every maternity health clinic, especially for pregnant women, with whom they can share their personal grief and sufferings.

Abstract. A city is a geographic entity and should be efficiently analysed and optimised through the use of geo-spatial technology. The certification for a city to be ‘Smart’ is measured on the basis of the liveable index, adequacy of water supply, assured supply of electricity, proper sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility, public transport, affordable housing, robust information technology connectivity, transparent and good governance, safety and security of citizens, modernised health and education infrastructure and citizen participation which will lead to sustainable development. Smart Cities require a perfect balancing of modernisation of city infrastructure and leveraging technology. Smart cities require Geo-smart mapping and visualization capabilities with applications for protecting groundwater resources, locating schools and health centres, locating garbage dumps and toilets, designing bus routes. The indigenously developed integrated platform of GIS, Image Processing, Photogrammetry and CAD, called IGiS has been leveraged by Scanpoint Geomatics Limited, Ahmedabad (SGL), India for implementing the Enterprise GIS for 7 smart cities in India. A centralised geo spatial database with a standard data model compliant set of maps/layers has been created for each city. The spatial layers are derived from 30cm resolution satellite data. Point data (locational information) is generated using DGPS surveys. The city assets are geographically mapped at a scale of 1:2000 and organised in a spatial database. Inputs required for operations and maintenance of every utility/facility are geo tagged and stored in the database. Web & Mobile GIS applications & Citizen portal are developed using the indigenous platform. Integration with other e-governance applications and spatial layer requirements of the Integrated Command and Control Centre are supported through RestAPI & OGC compliant web services. SGL’s Mobile GIS framework named Qpad comes handy for spatial data verification. IoT devices are used to gain insights for real-time handling of critical situations or emergencies. Having laid the foundation for driving smart cities in terms of the spatial database at a scale of 1:2000, the stage is set to look forward to the results. Plugging revenue leakages, better traffic management, information at a click during peak of the Corona pandemic, effective usage of open spaces and barren areas, planning the utility requirements by the corporation to accommodate for the urban explosion is the kind of harvest that is anticipated with abated breath. This paper demonstrates the suitability and capability of the indigenously developed common platform for image processing and GIS (IGiS Enterprise Suite) in building Smart City Applications and quantifying the results.

Streszczenie:
Playing as a global city, to maintain the economic dynamics and urban vitality, Hong Kong government would like to take urban regeneration in urban core as a kind of urban growth strategy. The government monopolizes land supply for urban development through the leasehold system, while the redevelopment agency is authorized to take land acquisition for urban redevelopment. The transformation of agency from Land Development Corporation (LDC) to Urban Renewal Authority (URA) reflected the formation of a coalition composed of quasi-public redevelopment agency and private developer, which facilitates land and property resumption in urban redevelopment. The URA-led projects often tend to redevelop obsolete communities into up-market neighborhoods, which possibly enables redevelopment agency and developers to gain more economic benefits from real estate appreciation. Nevertheless, evidences from some large redevelopment projects conducted by URA in Hong Kong such as Lee Tung Street, Langham Palace and Kennedy Town have presented that urban redevelopment is closely associated with gentrification triggered by displacement of original neighborhood residents. Hence gentrification in Hong Kong has raised more and more concerns about booming housing price as well as fragmentation of social networks. Through urban regime combined with growth machine approach, this paper will explain the collusion of redevelopment agency and private developers that jointly turns the URA-led redevelopment into neighborhood gentrification. And by examining Kwun Tong Town Centre Project (KTTCP), findings indicate that soaring property value will crowd low-income groups and working classes out from their original neighborhoods; and then those gentrified residential estates will be occupied by rich class. Moreover, increasing rent and operation costs will inevitably eliminate those family-operated small businesses; and then they will be superseded by high-end retailing and services. In this way, urban morphology will be reshaped perpetually through more and more gentrified neighborhoods.

Industrial Site selection is one of the rudimentary decisions to expand or relocate any business start-up process. This paper aimed at finding suitable location for possible industrial site as per reaching the SDGs taking Khulna City as a case. For instance, the targeted SDGs Goal 9: Resilient Infrastructure, Sustainable Industrialization and Innovation. The research also focused on the existing locations of the industries in the Khulna city and filled the gap to propose the new locations. To achieve this, a three-stage method have been adopted. At first, the existing industries were categorized on the basis of basic/non-basic, small/large scale, input/output characteristics in geo-spatial environment. Location Quotient (LQ) technique was applied to detect basic, non-basic industries and industrial zone. Then, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was conducted to define weights of important criterion such as temperature, slope, water body, land use, city center, connectivity and structures. The calculation of Consistency Ratio (CR<0.1) showed rational consistency of the factors. Finally, Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) was adopted in GIS platform to address the suitable locations. The analysis shows 10% of the total KCC area is suitable for constructing industrial zones. According to the results most of the suitable land was found in the eastern side and a few suitable lands was found in the upper western part of the map. Another findings state that, 5% change in vacant land can increase this percentage to 17% which eventually escalates sustainability, resilience and locational advantages. In addition, the study assesses the land use change in Khulna City Corporation for recent years which have potential for industrial establishment through land suitability analysis (LSA) to emphasize both land use and industries with sustainable development

Initiated on 12th February 2018, Anganwadi centres (AWC) of Gujarat adapted the integrated child development services common application software (ICDS-CAS), for real time monitoring and record keeping, for Anganwadi workers (AWWs), Anganwadi supervisors (AWS) and the child development project officers (CDPO).This application was abruptly discontinued in September 2020 and replaced by ‘Poshan tracker’ ,a mobile based application, launched by the ministry of women and child development, government of India on 1st March 2021. Documentation of challenges and benefits due to shift to software-based record keeping system by frontline workers of ICDS in urban Gujarat. Informal meetings were held with stakeholders like the CDPO, AWS and AWWs to discuss the challenges faced due to digitalisation of record maintenance. We planned to conduct two focused group discussions (FGD) for the same purpose. FGDs were conducted at two different Anganwadi, within city corporation area. Audio recordings of both FGDs were repeatedly played and analysed to prepare qualitative report. ‘ICDS-CAS’ didn’t store older records so the AWWs had to refer to their older registers. The software was English based but AWWs preferred Gujarati(local) language. ‘Poshan tracker had no ‘auto-update’ and ‘delete’ option, to rectify inaccurate entries. One could easily view all the information in one glance. Software database had compiled data from anganwadi, removing the need for supervisors to separately contact each AWWs for an anganwadi data. It was concluded that elder AWWs preferred old register entry system, while the younger AWWs preferred the software data entry system.

Streszczenie:
Richmond, California, a small industrial center north of Oakland and just east of San Francisco, expanded from a prewar population of 23,000 to more than 100,000 permanent residents in 1942. While Henry J. Kaiser's shipbuilding corporation advertised for—and city leaders sought—white skilled labor, military realities and expanding Allied production needs encouraged the hiring of unskilled African American, indigenous, and Chinese American men and women in unprecedented numbers. While the early struggles of workers to find housing and adequate services in Richmond and the East Bay more broadly have been clearly documented by historians, a legacy of continued substandard housing and services disproportionately affected minority workers and their families. Redlined, or denied rental applications because of race through legal policy and unofficial neighborhood agreements, minority workmen and women disproportionately remained in substandard housing even after the construction of federally funded housing units. Exposed to industrial pollutants, urban waste, and human effluent despite the efforts of both humanitarian-minded industrialists and local, state, and federal government officials, these minority groups faced racial and class-based challenges during World War II home front production, which have been overshadowed by the triumphant image of Rosie the Riveter and the total war victory of that “greatest generation.” Research in the Bancroft Library, the Richmond Museum, and other archival databases demonstrates how public contracts became sources of private money for industrialists, leading to the development of facilities that public funds could not support, and thereby reducing the quality of life for minority residents.

We probed what are the sustainability initiatives of the selected Publicly Listed Companies in the Philippines that are advancing the pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on Good Health and Well-Being and Quality Education. Specifically, we mapped the sustainability programs implemented by the sample companies that are aligned with the 17 UN SDGs. We also determined if these UN SDGs are embedded and articulated in their corporate vision-mission statements. Then, we identified the explicit programs that were implemented by the selected firms that are advancing the pursuit of a few specific targets of SDG#3 and SDG#4. We anchored our study on the theories of Sustainable Development and Humanistic Management and used qualitative descriptive and exploratory research designs. We utilized purposive sampling to select the 20 Publicly Listed Companies based on four criteria. We employed content analysis to determine their specific programs from their Sustainability Reports and/or Annual Reports. Our numeral mapping analysis revealed that the average number of implemented programs related to the 17 UN SDGs by the sample corporations is 11(65%). Companies are pursuing all 17 SDGs while some implemented only six programs. Our data further showed that overall, 15 out of 20 (75%) corporations have articulated and embedded the essence of the UN SDGs either in their vision or mission or combined vision-mission statements. On SDG#3, our findings disclosed that all (100%) of the 20 sampled corporations implemented definite programs for "ending epidemics and communicable diseases" with specific reference to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. On SDG#3, our findings divulged that 13 out of the 20 (65%) sampled firms implemented specific programs that directly addressed the target of "achieving health coverage and wellness for all at all ages." On SDG#4, our results indicated that all (100%) of the 20 sample corporations have implemented programs on quality education. Our propositions that there are specific sustainability programs implemented by the selected Publicly Listed Companies that contributed to achieving Health and Well-Being, as well as Quality Education, were confirmed. We recommended including non-publicly listed companies across industries, increasing the sample size, and using of mixed method design in the methodology for a more rigorous investigation of the achievements and impact of SDG target indicators for future research. Streszczenie:
Modern trends in the formation of urban development are based primarily on the extent to which the territory of a city can be attractive for investors, interested people in general and public administration systems. When regarding programs for the development of urban areas in the structure of sustainable development, it is necessary to highlight the methods of forming an attractive image of a city, which is considered a marketing tool. Understanding the possibilities for the development of an urban area requires the formation of tools for spatial marketing and opportunities for the establishment of measures for the development of individual tools of communication between city authorities and the external environment. The novelty of the research is determined by the structural feature of the formation of an integrated method of using marketing tools to promote the image of a city in the informational, social, and cultural aspects. The authors show the tools for implementing the marketing strategy of the urban area as elements of sustainable development. Stakeholders of sustainable development are shown not only local management structures but also global investment funds and transnational corporations. The practical significance of the study is determined by the possibility of forming based on an urban area, which is marked by the presence of sustainable development markers, innovative and science-intensive centres, and analytical corporations. The formation of development centres is also possible through the creation of smart cities.

Streszczenie:
Environmental governance refers to the process of making environmental decisions, who makes them and how they are carried out. It includes formal and informal institutional arrangements for resource and environmental decision-making and management. This study examined the degree to which Barishal City Corporation (BCC) and Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), two divisional cities of Bangladesh, integrated environmental governance into sustainable urbanization. This study has collected data through questionnaire survey from 600 stakeholders (300 from each city corporation) along with key informant interviews from the government officials of the selected City Corporations. The study's findings show that environmental governance can pave the way to creating a sustainable city a reality. The ineffective enforcement of environmental laws and regulations, the lack of organizational coordination, responsibility, and responsiveness, and the deficiencies in resource mobilization are also identified as some of the few issues in this regard. This study argues that cities may be made sustainable by raising environmental awareness and changing the way of thinking of citizens and local government officials so that they believe everyone of them has a role to play in building a sustainable city. Creating sustainable cities cannot be legislated or decided: it must become a part of the life of every resident and organization in the city. The main drawback of this paper is that it only examines two of Bangladesh's twelve city corporations.

Streszczenie:
Nowadays, urban areas very often attract the poor and the unemployed, leading to the creation of neighbourhoods of poverty (slums) and other economic and social problems. All over the world, cities include sustainable goals in their development strategies, but the question is, do these city development strategies also foresee activities devoted to human capital growth? The purpose of the study was an analysis of city corporation activities and of students’ perception of a city corporation’s activities that aim to encourage educated young people to study and settle in their city, using the example of Gdansk, Poland. The study was conducted in 2021–2022, based on desk research and an Internet survey. The research group comprised students at the University of Gdansk (Poland). The main conclusions from the study are: (1) cities’ sustainable policies are slightly integrated with actions meant to encourage highly educated people to settle within; (2) Gdansk students’ decisions to settle are not correlated with city corporation activities, and (3) from Gdansk students’ perspective, preferential accommodation costs are the most expected city corporation actions.

The assessment of the role of large cities as hubs of foreign TNCs is of particular importance in economic geography in the context of the formation of global business network structures. Based on the Forbes Global 2000 rating data, the range of presence of the world’s largest foreign TNCs’ affiliates in the London agglomeration, their industrial and geographic structure, and the pattern of location were assessed. As a result of the analysis, the historical stages of the formation of foreign corporate segment of the city’s economy were identified. London is highly attractive for foreign corporations, in their numbers it competes equally with New York and the world’s “gateway cities”. The maximum number of foreign TNCs’ affiliates was recorded in the sphere of financial and professional services, and, to a lesser extent, in mechanical engineering, chemical and mining industries. A relatively narrow geography of corporate links is revealed with a clear dominance of US companies. A pronounced “centric” model of foreign TNCs’ affiliates’ location is argued with two key clusters - in the City and Westminster areas.

A practical approach to deal with the municipal solid waste at hand needs the adoption of a suitable model and an understanding of the required processes to manage it effectively. A case study of Bhubaneswar City/ Municipal Corporation of Odisha in India, focused on the development of a suitable model based on approaches like Process of elimination, Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat (SWOT) analysis, Mathematical analysis, Analytical Hierarchy Process and the Test of sustainability. The study focused on the processes in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) value chain like waste generation, primary source storage, collection, secondary storage, transportation, processing and disposal. A two by two matrix model was adopted to arrive at a suitable disposal model mapped with the source segregation. The Urban Local Body (ULB) analysed Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) as one of the criteria to select suitable Collection, Transportation and Disposal Model based on Technical, Economic, Social and Environmental considerations .The mathematical analysis involved Pair-wise Comparison Matrix for the quantitative variables while qualitative variables were examined by Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). The economic factor dominated the decision making; ‘street dumping and street sweeping’ got an upper ranking in the final matrix analysis of the collection and Transportation plan and ‘incineration’ dominated the decision making for the disposal plan. The limitation of the study showed that the application of mathematical model to find out optimum Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Model does not accommodate qualitative variables. Therefore, SWOT analysis and sustainability studies were examined to arrive at the best possible model. SWOT criteria drew upon the work environment with respect to financial position of the Urban Local Body, Not in my backyard (NIMBY) factor, Private Public Partnership (PPP) mode aspirants, availability of mature technology and threat in factors like adverse regulatory order, disruptive technologies and the lack of political will. The test of sustainability based on the proposed model passed through the test of capability and constraint study, social acceptance, regulatory compliance, and ground level feasibility. Based on multiple criteria in decision making, the study found that ideally Bhubaneswar should adopt a model where source segregation with door to door collection of waste facility is given top priority. Decentralization of waste disposal and cluster approach of cities and towns nearby to curb the waste menace and facilitate the waste to go the fuel way looked sustainable and achievable. At the same time, addressing the Not in my backyard (NIMBY) factor by earmarking land bank for waste disposal and collection of cesses from the city inhabitants could generate enough financial resources for its sustainability. This research unbolts discussions with respect to the challenges presented by the Not in my backyard (NIMBY) factor, finding suitable landfill sites for solid waste disposal, interference of disruptive technologies and the change in leadership not owning up to responsibilities or revoking the previously established management practices. Sustainability studies should help all stakeholders to participate harmoniously with a common goal of clean city and striving for a better planet. Similarly, the comparative matrix based on the scientific, financial, social and ecological considerations were applied to the disposal plan to develop a fitting model for the Urban Local Body (ULB). The study ascertained that Bhubaneswar should have source segregation with door to door collection facility and may need decentralized composting facility centres to handle the biodegradable wastes. The plastic wastes may be used for Waste to Fuel or for road making. The non-degradable may go to land fill or Waste to Energy plant with cluster approach combining nearby Cuttack and Khurdha districts to meet the waste requirement of 550 tonnes per day to sustain the plant. At the same time, it should collect cess from the city habitants to generate enough financial resources for sustainability. It should earmark the land-bank for waste processing facilities as it faces serious Law and Order problems due to Not in my backyard (NIMBY) factor.

The non-fatal deliberate taking of overdoses in Cork city during 1982 was investigated from records in the general hospitals. In one of the hospitals, those attending after an overdose were personally interviewed. For both sexes, the greatest incidence of overdoses was in the younger groups; for females, there was a seasonal variation. Those taking overdoses were grouped by electoral wards, and the social characteristics of these wards determined. The frequency varied greatly throughout the city; some wards, particularly in corporation northern estates and part of the city centre, showed a rate of up to three times the average; these areas were the most likely to show social deprivation.

Inadequate and Inequall service distribution is one of the primary problems in a city. Bangladesh's main cities are presently faced with significant urban population expansion, and urban expansion is resulting in many unplanned developments. One of Bangladesh's most rapidly rising cities is the Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) area. As the population in the city is growing rapidly, the city has pressure to provide service facilities in the area with heavier population demand. The city corporation is now separated into two primary land uses - core and non-core according to existing conditions of service. The research aims to identify the nature of the spatial distribution of service facilities (schools, colleges, health care centers, mosques, temples) and to analyze the deficiencies of different service facilities in both core and non-core areas of Ranpur City Corporation. The research is mainly based on primary data collected by a questionnaire survey from the authority of RpCC. In this research, the requirements and the deficiency of different amenities are also calculated using population projections by arithmetic increase method and population coverage of each service facility. The calculation found that the shortfall of service facilities are higher in the non- core area than the core area of RpCC, and major markets are concentrated in the core area. This type of centralization can create pressure on the resources of a core area. The identified nature of centralization from the study can be used for future planning and development of service facilities to ensure proper distribution in RpCC area.

For the sustainable development of a country or a city, it is important to know the accurate idea of the population of that region. The local authorities can easily implement their various development plans if they know the future scenario of the population. This study aims to forecast the population of Sylhet City Corporation, which was transformed into a city corporation 20 years ago. Three frequently used and popular methods of population forecasting Arithmetic Increase Method, Geometric Increase Method, and Incremental Increment Method are used to forecast the population. Population data from 2001 to 2015 are used to train and data from 2016 to 2021 are used to verify the methods. The average percentage of error of these three methods is about 3%. Among the three methods, the Geometric Increase Method provides the best result with a percentage of error of 0.15655%.

The article examines the current trends in the development of closed cities of the nuclear industry, the changes taking place in them and the opportunities for development. The relevance of these issues is due to the need to use the scientific and technological potential of cities for the innovative development of the country. Based on foreign experience, it is confirmed that the presence of nuclear industry enterprises on the territory contributes to the creation of innovative ecosystems, makes the territory attractive for business development. In terms of socio-economic development, attention is focused on the movement of the population, the activities of city-forming enterprises and small businesses, the income of the population and local budgets. New trends characteristic of closed cities are identified: strengthening the role of the ROSATOM State Corporation in the management system of nuclear closed cities; diversification of their economy based on the stable operation of the city-forming enterprise and the creation of other high-tech industries with the participation of the ROSATOM State Corporation; the dependence of the population of cities on the state of affairs at the city-forming enterprise; weak interest in the development of small businesses; the appearance of pendulum migration. The further development of closed cities through the expansion of the market of highly qualified labor in them is proposed: the activation of civil research and development; the formation of research networks using unique scientific installations and supercomputer capacities, etc. To attract qualified labor, it is necessary to create comfortable living conditions, which is more likely with the participation of the ROSATOM State Corporation. Some of the proposals are being tested. The results obtained may be of methodological and practical interest not only for closed cities, but also for other single-industry towns, as well as city-forming holdings.

The aim was to investigate the integrity of the urban fabric of Irkutsk historical centre regarding interaction between urban morphotypes and their functional use in conjunction with orientation around the city. The study considered theoretical background to the analysis of integration of the historic city development, including the local approaches to working with places of interest. Two fundamentally different approaches were identified. The first approach addresses the issues of organizing the spatial structure and generating the geometry. The second approach examines the socio-functional issues of the environment, its cognitive psychological aspects. Local approaches to working with places of interest focus on dividing the city into environment protection zones and subzones, each of which corresponds to its own type of reconstruction, regeneration and transformation. Here, the conventional approaches to city protection zoning and zone regulation are supplemented by a new approach to the topological regulation of site development. The evolution stages in the development of the place of interest in the centre of Irkutsk were revealed. The research involved a chronological analysis of publications of Irkutsk authors on the development of “place” as a historical area of the city, starting from the period of its initial development (the second half of the 17th century) to the beginning of the 21st century. The content of the stages is a new feature in the context of site development. The research revealed evolution of site development of Irkutsk from the middle of the 17th century to the 2000s, as well as approaches to arranging the territories adjacent to buildings among themselves.

Abstract Introduction: Detection of disparity in microsatellite DNA regions (STR - Short Tandem Repeats) between recipient and donor allows for sensitive and specific monitorization of the degree of haematopoietic chimerism. It is well known that disparities between donor and recipient in various polymorphic systems (mainly MHC) are associated with an increased incidence of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). However, it is still unknown whether or not STR disparities could have a similar biological effect. Aim: To study the relationship between STR disparities and frequency of GVHD, overall survival and event free survival in patients who have received allogeneic transplantation. Patients: 161 consecutive patients transplanted with peripheral blood stem cells from identical MHC sibling donor at a single center were included in the study. Their characteristics were: median age 44 (17–69); Male/Female: 94/67; Sex disparity: 46%; Diagnosis: 39 AML, 26 ALL, 24 MDS, 19 MM, 17 CML, 14 NHL, 10 CLL, 10 HD, 1 CMPD,U, and 1 Hypereosinophilic Syndrome. The conditioning regimen was reduced intensity in 81 patients and myeloablative in the remainly 80 pts. All 161 patients engrafted and were evaluable for acute GVHD (aGVHD), while 128 were included in the analysis of chronic GVHD (cGVHD), according to the available follow-up. Methods: After genomic DNA extraction, PowerPlex®16 System kit (Promega Corporation, Madison, WI) was used to amplify 16 STR regions (15 plus gender marker, Amilogenin). The amplified products were analysed using GeneScan 2.1 (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA) after electrophoresis in the ABIPrism 377 (Applied Biosystems). The chi-square and y t-Student tests were used for statistical analysis. Log-rank analysis was applied for comparing differences in survival. Multivariate analysis was carried out according to the cox-regression method. Results: The number of STR disparities between recipient and donor ranged from 4 to 15 (median: 9). Discordances in D13S317, D18S51 and TPOX were associated with higher grades of aGVHD severity (p=0.024, p=0.027 and p=0.034, respectively). Disparities in D16S539 was associated with cGVHD (p=0.043). The number of loci discrepancies was not related to any clinical parameter included in the analysis (aGVHD, cGVHD, EFS y OS). However, when patients were grouped according to STR mismatches (<11 disparities and >11, n=127 and 17, respectively), shorter OS was associated in patients with >11 disparities (p=0.021). Conclusions: The presence of STR disparities could be associated with the development of complications during sibling allogeneic transplantation, including presentation of aGVHD. The data available only shows a marginal association and must be considered as preliminary.

The research study attempts to evaluate the financial performance of Mysuru and Mangaluru City Corporations in Karnataka. The study is based on secondary data, which will be collected through secondary sources of financial statements of Mysuru and Mangaluru city corporation. The data so collected will be tabulated appropriately to achieve the objectives set. Required statistical tools will also be used to test the hypotheses formulated in the study. The per capita income and per capita expenditure were increased in all selected Municipal corporations during the study period 2010-11 to 2019-20. There is no significant difference in per capita income between Mysuru CC and Mangaluru CC, which means per capita income is almost equal in selected Municipal Corporations. The per capita expenditure is also equivalent to Mysuru CC and Mangaluru CC. It also found that the expenditure of selected Municipal Corporation is high compared to their income, which means the selected Municipal Corporation depends on State Government grants and loans. There is a significant difference between the development and non -development expenditure on revenue account of both Mysuru and Mangaluru City Corporations. The Mysuru CC had the highest development expenditure in 2017-18 and became 262.64 crores and lowest by 50.04 crores of Mangaluru CC in 2012-13. The Mysuru CC has the highest non-development expenditure in 2019-20 and became 199.52 crores and lowest by 16.73 crores of Mangaluru CC in 2010-11.

This paper challenges inherited twentieth-century assumptions of suburbia by teasing out existing interrelationships between the city centre and its peripheries. This is done through a content analysis of promotional material and spatial plans guiding the development of 'City Edge', a proposed 700-hectare regeneration scheme over an industrial development in the periphery of Dublin, Ireland. The analysis of new land-use ambitions for City Edge elucidates tensions around the 'highest and best use' of land, the role of non-local speculative approaches, and how the demand for housing in global cities, combined with an ideal of 'mixed-use' is reshaping suburban landscapes. In so doing, we draw upon the concepts of 'blandscape' and 'blendscape' to examine some contradictory forces at work in shaping contemporary suburban space.
