Streszczenie:
Purpose In today’s competitive market, product demand and its mix frequently vary due to various uncertainties, which thus imparts the overall manufacturing cost. Furthermore, uncertainties also impart the layout design in manufacturing industries in the long run. Therefore, the layout design needs to capture the possibility of uncertainties, and these uncertainties must be captured while designing the layout of a facility. Hence, an efficient facility layout design minimizes the manufacturing cost and lead time. The purpose of this paper is to propose a cellular layout design for a tower manufacturing industry. Design/methodology/approach The paper develops an embedded simulated annealing-based meta-heuristic to solve proposed cellular layout under different scenarios considering single and multi-time periods for tower manufacturing industry. A comparative study is also performed to analyze comparison among static cellular layout, a dynamic cellular layout or a robust stochastic cellular layout for the tower manufacturing industry. Findings The current layout of the industry is a process layout. Here, the layout for a tower manufacturing industry is proposed under SCFLP, DCFLP and RSCFLP. The proposed models and solution methodology is tested using six scenarios with different combination of time periods. Lastly, OFV value obtained for all the scenarios is compared, and it is found that RSCFLP outruns other SCFLP and DCFLP for a tower manufacturing industry. Based on the above study, it is also concluded that RSCFLP is an efficient and effective layout in tower manufacturing industry. Originality/value The paper proposes a cellular layout design for a tower manufacturing industry. The cellular layout design is found to be preferred over the traditional layout as it reduces material handling cost, manufacturing lead time and hazards. Moreover, it enhances productivity and quality.

In the current and future apparel market, customer demands various products. The apparel plants have to face the ever-changing demands from product mixture and volume. Satisfying customer demands is an important strategic requirement. Failing to do so can result not only in lost profits caused by reduced sales, but also placing the manufacturers in danger of losing future market. So the plant must manufacture correctly and send the products to clients timely. Therefore, the time taken to manufacture high quality products is very important. Layout design is the method utilized on assigning the machine to a certain space. Facility layout includes product layout, process layout and cellular layout etc. The right facility layout can provide manufacturing flexibility and reduce manufacturing cost. In the general facility layout problem, the material flow and department relationship is a major optimization goal. This paper will discuss the manufacturing flexibility from facility layout and propose time as an additional requirement to the material flow and department relationship. This paper will also provide a layout model for flexible manufacturing in view of apparel manufacturing characteristics.

In recent years, the process of cellular manufacturing and group technology have received a lot of attention and popularity in many developed countries. By applying Group Technology (GT), many benefits of flow-line production can be attained in a batch production system. GT improves material handling significantly by reducing material flow time, distance, and setup times. In this paper, an earnest investigative attempt was made to provide valuable information regarding the use of Group Technology by applying to a real world jobshop system. The proposed GT model has the flexibility of choosing the number of cells required, which is very useful in examining different manufacturing cell configurations; or in case the workshop or factory prefers a certain number of work cells. The GT model results were found satisfactory and superior to other techniques in some cases.

Workshop facility layout belongs to a kind of combinational optimization problem, which has the characteristics of nonlinearity and not being easily solved with conventional methods, therefore it is regarded as a typical NP hard problem. This paper proposed a crowding niche cellular genetic algorithm. By introducing niche crowding technology to select the best individuals, the population diversity was well maintained. On the other hand, neighbors in cellular automata were adopted to study more on the cellular topological optimization structure, which enhanced the global searching ability of the algorithm. In addition, multi-line workshop facility layout problem has been optimized in the paper, which verified that the crowding niche cellular genetic algorithm was effective and applicable.

Streszczenie:
Machine learning, neural networks, and metaheuristic algorithms are relatively new subjects, closely related to each other: learning is somehow an intrinsic part of all of them. On the other hand, cell formation (CF) and facility layout design are the two fundamental steps in the CMS implementation. To get a successful CMS design, addressing the interrelated decisions simultaneously is important. In this article, a new nonlinear mixed-integer programming model is presented which comprehensively considers solving the integrated dynamic cell formation and inter/intracell layouts in continuous space. In the proposed model, cells are configured in flexible shapes during the planning horizon considering cell capacity in each period. This study considers the exact information about facility layout design and material handling cost. The proposed model is an NP-hard mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. To optimize the proposed problem, first, three metaheuristic algorithms, that is, Genetic Algorithm (GA), Keshtel Algorithm (KA), and Red Deer Algorithm (RDA), are employed. Then, to further improve the quality of the solutions, using machine learning approaches and combining the results of the aforementioned algorithms, a new metaheuristic algorithm is proposed. Numerical examples, sensitivity analyses, and comparisons of the performances of the algorithms are conducted.

Streszczenie:
This paper presents a facility layout design for a cellular manufacturing system (CMS), with the automated guided vehicles (AGVs) as the transportation device, to minimize the total material handling costs. A new concept of assigning the workstations to the non-overlapping closed zones, by which independent AGVs are allocated for internal transfer of materials/parts in each zone, is proposed. To handle this problem, a mathematical programming model is developed. The problem has been shown to be NP-hard. This computational difficulty has led us to consider suboptimal solutions generated by a Tabu search with three algorithmic variants. To evaluate the efficiencies of these algorithms, an ANOVA statistical test is performed and the best algorithm is designated. The solution of the new algorithms is then compared with the solution obtained by the CPLEX software. The result indicates that the designated algorithm can provide an average solution with a small deviation of only 0.01% from the optimal solution. This algorithm is also applied to a real-world case problem. The use of this algorithm for re-designing of the layout for the real-world case problem shows considerable cost saving comparing to its existing layout design.

While cellular automata (CA) has become increasingly popular in land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) simulations, insufficient research has considered the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of urban development strategies and applied it to constrain CA models. Consequently, we proposed to add a zoning transition rule and planning influence that consists of a development grade coefficient and traffic facility coefficient in the CA model to reflect the top-down and heterogeneous characteristics of spatial layout and the dynamic and heterogeneous external interference of traffic facilities on land-use development. Testing the method using Nanjing city as a case study, we show that the optimal combinations of development grade coefficients are different in different districts, and the simulation accuracies are improved by adding the grade coefficients into the model. Moreover, the integration of the traffic facility coefficient does not improve the model accuracy as expected because the deployment of the optimal spatial layout has considered the effect of the subway on land use. Therefore, spatial layout planning is important for urban green, humanistic and sustainable development.

Streszczenie:
Material handling in the production division of publisher X encountered several obstacles, including the transfer of material between production processes having cross-movement flows. This condition occurs as a result of an irregular engine layout. The impact of the conditions in the transfer of material in the production process is the distance of the transfer to be 968.6 m/day. This condition causes some machines to be repositioned, so that material transfer can run faster and more efficiently. One of the efforts to reduce material transfer is to re-plan the placement of production facilities by adopting the concept of a cellular manufacturing system or cellular manufacturing system that is feasible to be applied to the production process of publisher X. The cellular manufacturing system was chosen because it is in accordance with the number of characteristics of the publishing industry that requires the ability to anticipate changes. This rapid demand suits a particular market. This article describes how the results of rearranging and minimizing the distance of moving raw materials in the production section of publisher X by adopting the concept of a cellular manufacturing system and rearranging the layout of production facilities by using sorting using Sorting Algorithms. The selection of the Sorting Algorithms is based on consideration of the order of the output which is not coherent, so it needs to be sorted. Efficient sorting is needed to determine the part-machine incidence matrix which is then used in the development of cellular manufacturing systems. Program development on Visual Studio 2012 software shows the results of facility layout planning by grouping 20 machines and 11 products with this layout change, the total material handling distance is reduced by 371.8 m or by 61.61%

Pedestrian perception and choice behavior considering the queue time of door changing were investigated in pedestrian decision and evacuation time. The model was used to mimic the emergency evacuation with a range of densities for the study of relationship between individual behavior and evacuation time. The results indicate that pedestrian is sensitively for the queue time and prefer to change the exit if the evacuation time perceived by the pedestrian is large then other exit during the escape process. Streszczenie:
Cellular manufacturing (CM) is a production approach directed towards reducing costs, as well as increasing system's flexibility in today's small-to-medium lot production environment. Many structural and operational issues should be considered for a successful CM design and implementation such as cell formation (CF), production planning, and facility layout. Most researchers have addressed these issues sequentially or independently, instead of jointly optimizing a combination of these issues. In order to attain better results to ensure that the system will be capable of remaining efficient in unknown future situations, these issues should be addressed simultaneously. In this paper, a mathematical model is developed using an integrated approach for production planning and cell formation problems in a CM. A set of numerical examples are provided from existing the literature in order to test and illustrate the proposed model. In order to evaluate and verify the performance of the proposed model, it is compared with a well-known cell formation methods (rank order clustering and direct clustering analysis), using group capability index (GCI) measure. The results and comparisons indicate that the proposed model has a significantly higher and satisfactory performance and it is reliable for the design and the analysis of CM systems.

Purpose Employees’ satisfaction and productivity is one of the main interests of employers. Psychological comfort can cause dissatisfaction with their work. Thus, it is important to understand what factors contribute to employees’ satisfaction in workplaces. The purpose of this paper is to identify the weight of contribution of each design parameter on increasing psychological satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach The study included 579 employees in five offices in The Netherlands through an online survey. The typologies of offices vary in terms of office layouts, orientations and façade. Additionally, a parameter of desk location was included as this factor may be associated with user satisfaction. Kruskal–Wallis H test, categorical regression, and logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the impact of these design parameters on psychological user satisfaction. Findings The results revealed the impact of design parameters on the psychological satisfaction. The parameters of office layouts and desk locations were the significant predictor factors for the probability of satisfaction variables (e.g. privacy, concentration, communication, social contact and territoriality). The parameters for optimal satisfaction were found in cellular office, north-west oriented workstation and 4 m away from a window. Originality/value Psychological comfort is an inevitable aspect in user satisfaction studies. This paper, therefore, measures and predicts the relationship between design factors and employees’ satisfaction through case studies in The Netherlands. The findings help designers, architects, planners and facility managers to develop user-focussed office design principles supporting employees’ work performance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review, evaluate and classify the academic research that has been published in facility layout problems (FLPs) and to analyse how researches and practices on FLPs are. Design/methodology/approach The review is based on 166 papers published from 1953 to 2021 in international peer-reviewed journals. The literature review on FLPs is presented under broader headings of discrete space and continuous space FLPs. The important formulations of FLPs under static and dynamic environments represented in the discrete and continuous space are presented. The articles reported in the literature on various representations of facilities for the continuous space Unequal Area Facility Layout Problems (UA-FLPs) are summarized. Discussed and commented on adaptive and robust approaches for dynamic environment FLPs. Highlighted the application of meta-heuristic solution methods for FLPs of a larger size. Findings It is found that most of the earlier research adopted the discrete space for the formulation of FLPs. This type of space representation for FLPs mostly assumes an equal area for all facilities. UA-FLPs represented in discrete space yield irregular shape facilities. It is also observed that the recent works consider the UA-FLPs in continuous space. The solution of continuous space UA-FLPs is more accurate and realistic. Some of the recent works on UA-FLPs consider the flexible bay structure (FBS) due to its advantages over the other representations. FBS helps the proper design of aisle structure in the detailed layout plan. Further, the recent articles reported in the literature consider the dynamic environment for both equal and unequal area FLPs to cope with the changing market environment. It is also found that FLPs are Non-deterministic Polynomial-complete problems, and hence, they set the challenges to researchers to develop efficient meta-heuristic methods to solve the bigger size FLPs in a reasonable time. Research limitations/implications Due to the extremely large number of papers on FLPs, a few papers may have inadvertently been missed. The facility layout design research domain is extremely vast which covers other areas such as cellular layouts, pick and drop points and aisle structure design. This research review on FLPs did not consider the papers published on cellular layouts, pick and drop points and aisle structure design. Despite the possibility of not being all-inclusive, the authors firmly believe that most of the papers published on FLPs are covered and the general picture presented on various approaches and parameters of FLPs in this paper are precise and trustworthy. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper reviews and classifies the literature on FLPs for the first time under the broader headings of discrete space and continuous space representations. Many important formulations of FLPs under static and dynamic environments represented in the discrete and continuous space are presented. This paper also provides the observations from the literature review and identifies the prospective future directions.

This mathematical model forms machine cells, optimises the costs of unassigned machines and components, and designs the shop floor cell layout to have minimal movement of materials. The complete similarity measure algorithm forms machine cells and part families in a refined form. Later, exceptional elements are eliminated in the optimisation model by using machine duplication and sub-contracting of parts. Then the shop floor layout is designed to have optimised material movements between and within cells. An evaluation of the cell formation algorithm’ performance is done on the benchmark problems of various batch sizes to reveal the process’s capability compared with other similar methods. The data of machining times are acquired and tabulated in a part incidence matrix, which is used as input for the algorithm. The results from the linear programming optimisation model are that costs are saved, machines are duplicated, parts are sub-contracted, and there are inter- and intra- cellular movements. Finally, the output of the inbound facility design is the floor layout, which has machine cell clusters within the optimised floor area.

This paper proposes a stair/escalator/elevator selection model of passengers at the subway platform, where the cellular automata model is used to simulate passenger movement, and the fuzzy logic theory is used to describe selection behavior. The distance to the stair/escalator/elevator and the density of passengers in front of the facility are selected as the main influence factors. The rationality and effectiveness of the selection model are verified by comparing the field data with simulation results of passengers choosing different stairs/escalators/elevators. The relationship between passenger quantity, passenger speed, escalator quantity, escalator location, and the traffic rate is analyzed based on simulation results, which can provide a theoretical reference for the facility layout optimization at the platform floor of the subway station.
