Pełny tekst źródłaCone-Beam computed tomography (CBCT) is the new standard imaging method for dental practitioners. The image processing field of CBCT data is still underdeveloped due to the novelty of the method and its specificities compared to traditional CT. With Carestream Dental as industrial partner, the first part of this work is a new semi-automatic segmentation protocol for teeth, based on shape and intensity constraints, through a graph-cut optimization of an energy formulation. Results show a good quality of segmentation with an average Dice coefficient of 0.958. A fully functional implementation of the algorithm has led to a software available for dentists, taking into account the clinical context leading to temporal and technical difficulties. A preliminary extension to multi-objects segmentation showed the necessity to get more stringent shape constraints as well as a better optimization algorithm to get acceptable computation times. The second part of this thesis, more prospective, is about the creation of a structural model of the maxillo-facial space, to formalize the a priori knowledge on organs and theirs spatial relations. This model is a conceptual graph where structures and relationships are seen as concepts. In particular, the spatial relations “Along” and “Aligned”, modeled in a fuzzy set framework, have been extended to 3D objects

Pełny tekst źródłaThe resolution of dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images is imited by detector geometry, sensitivity, patient movement, the reconstruction technique and the need to minimize radiation dose. The corresponding image degradation model assumes that the CBCT image is a blurred (with a point spread function, PSF), downsampled, noisy version of a high resolution image. The quality of the image is crucial for precise diagnosis and treatment planning. The methods proposed in this thesis aim to give a solution for the single image super-resolution (SISR) problem. The algorithms were evaluated on dental CBCT and corresponding highresolution (and high radiation-dose) µCT image pairs of extracted teeth. I have designed a deep learning framework for the SISR problem, applied to CBCT slices. I have tested the U-net and subpixel neural networks, which both improved the PSNR by 21-22 dB, and the Dice coe_cient of the canal segmentation by 1-2.2%, more significantly in the medically critical apical region. I have designed an algorithm for the 3D SISR problem, using the canonical polyadic decomposition of tensors. This implementation conserves the 3D structure of the volume, integrating the factorization-based denoising, deblurring with a known PSF, and upsampling of the image in a lightweight algorithm with a low number of parameters. It outperforms the state-of-the-art 3D reconstruction-based algorithms with two orders of magnitude faster run-time and provides similar PSNR (improvement of 1.2-1.5 dB) and segmentation metrics (Dice coe_cient increased on average to 0.89 and 0.90). Thesis II b: I have implemented a joint alternating recovery of the unknown PSF parameters and of the high-resolution 3D image using CPD-SISR. The algorithm was compared to a state-of-the-art 3D reconstruction-based algorithm, combined with the proposed alternating PSF-optimization. The two algorithms have shown similar improvement in PSNR, but CPD-SISR-blind converged roughly 40 times faster, under 6 minutes both in simulation and on experimental dental computed tomography data. I have proposed a solution for the 3D SISR problem using the Tucker decomposition (TD-SISR). The denoising step is realized _rst by TD in order to mitigate the ill-posedness of the subsequent deconvolution. Compared to CPDSISR the algorithm runs ten times faster. Depending on the amount of noise, higher PSNR (0.3 - 3.5 dB), SSI (0.58 - 2.43%) and segmentation values (Dice coefficient, 2% improvement) were measured. The parameters in TD-SISR are familiar from 2D SVD-based algorithms, so their tuning is easier compared to CPD-SISR

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis contains two main themes: development of new iterative approaches for metal artifact reduction (MAR) and dose reduction in dental CT (Computed Tomography). The metal artifacts are mainly due to the beam-hardening, scatter and photon starvation in case of metal in contrast background like metallic dental implants in teeth. The first issue concerns about data correction on account of these effects. The second one involves the radiation dose reduction delivered to a patient by decreasing the number of projections. At first, the polychromatic spectra of X-ray beam and scatter can be modeled by a non-linear direct modeling in the statistical methods for the purpose of the metal artifacts reduction. However, the reconstruction by statistical methods is too much time consuming. Consequently, we proposed an iterative algorithm with a linear direct modeling based on data correction (beam-hardening and scatter). We introduced a new beam-hardening correction without knowledge of the spectra of X-ray source and the linear attenuation coefficients of the materials and a new scatter estimation method based on the measurements as well. Later, we continued to study the iterative approaches of dose reduction since the over-exposition or unnecessary exposition of irradiation during a CT scan has been increasing the patient's risk of radio-induced cancer. In practice, it may be useful that one can reconstruct an object larger than the field of view of scanner. We proposed an iterative algorithm on super-short-scans on multiple scans in this case, which contain a minimal set of the projections for an optimal dose. Furthermore, we introduced a new scanning mode of variant angular sampling to reduce the number of projections on a single scan. This was adapted to the properties and predefined interesting regions of the scanned object. It needed fewer projections than the standard scanning mode of uniform angular sampling to reconstruct the objet. All of our approaches for MAR and dose reduction have been evaluated on real data. Thanks to our MAR methods, the quality of reconstructed images was improved noticeably. Besides, it did not introduce some new artifacts compared to the MAR method of state of art NMAR [Meyer et al 2010]. We could reduce obviously the number of projections with the proposed new scanning mode and schema of super-short-scans on multiple scans in particular case

Pełny tekst źródłaFifty patients who had attended the Orthodontics Department of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Valencia, Spain were randomly selected. All subjects had a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in their medical record. From these three-dimensional models were obtained. Also performed traditional study models obtained were digitized two-dimensional digital models. After obtaining the two types of study models were analyzed tooth size and dental arch measurements, in order to analyze the reliability and reproducibility of these new models of three-dimensional study. After obtaining direct measures indirect measures were calculated (Bolton Index, Discrepancy Index, differences and ratios of dental arch measurements) by both methods. The results showed that measurements can be made of the teeth and arch dimensions in a reliable and reproducible three-dimensional models. The values of tooth sizes obtained by both methods are similar clinically presenting slight differences are not significant. The values of the arch are identical between both methods. In terms of indirect measures, the upper and lower Discrepancy Index, and lower width ratio turn out to be equivalent for both methods. In other indirect measures: Anterior and Total Bolton Index, the difference in length in the arch, the intercanine width and intermolar width, and the upper width ratio, we observe that there are differences between both methods not being significant from the standpoint of practical use of the method.
