Streszczenie:
Abstract In this paper, Caravaggio’s painting of The Beheading of St John the Baptist located in the Oratory of the Co-Cathedral of St John the Baptist, in Valletta, Malta, will serve as a backdrop to qualify and analyze the religious and aesthetic experiential value that such an artwork could generate within the beholder, by considering its eschatological and soteriological implications and context, as well as the notion of ‘image as mirror’ and its effect on the viewer’s consciousness. This will primarily be discussed across two binaries: early seventeenth-century Hospitaller spirituality and the precarious condition of the artist, himself a novice of the Hospitaller Order of St John the Baptist. Guided by the changing artistic, didactic, and functional uses of the Oratory, and the theological implications of the painting, the Beheading will thus be analyzed in its affordance for both transcendental and self-reflective revelation, and as a turning point for the aspiring novice, the artist and, ultimately, the contemporary beholder.

A polychrome and gilded wooden artifact was found, in a heavily deteriorated state, in the stores of the Mdina Cathedral Museum, Malta. The object represents two zoomorphic angels holding a coat of arms. Stylistically, the artifact matches with parts of a late 16th century Organ balcony, currently exhibited at the same Museum. The present study aims to establish whether or not the newly recovered artifact might have formed part of the balcony ensemble by means of material identification techniques. The combined use of XRF, FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy ensure a detailed characterization of the material used. In the case of pigments, for both artifacts the blue pigment was smalt, while cinnabar was used for red and flesh tones. The metallic decorative parts of the panels are gilded, confirmed by the presence of Au peaks in the X-ray spectra. The supporting structure of both artifacts was manufactured from poplar wood.

Streszczenie:
The article presents new information about the altar painting “Blessed Augustin Kažotić, St John Evangelist and St James” in Trogir Cathedral. In the lower right corner, a previously unknown inscription was discovered during the restoration: Teodoro Matteini F. in Venezia 1805. Apart from the name of the distinguished Italian painter, Teodoro Matteini (Pistoia, 1754 - Venice, 1831), it states that it was made in Venice in 1805. This indisputably confirms the opinion published so far by Croatian and Italian art historians. Based on Italian and Croatian documents, it can be concluded that the key role in the commission of the painting was played by brothers Ivan Dominik (1761-1848) and Ivan Luka Garagnin (1764-1841), the noblemen of Trogir and respectable representatives of Dalmatian society in the early nineteenth century. They knew Matteini well because he was the painter who in 1798 painted a portrait of Ivan Dominik Garagnin who is mentioned in a letter as a steward of Trogir Cathedral. In the process of commissioning and designing the painting’s composition and details, an active part was played by the learned brothers’ friend and confidant, Giovanni de Lazara (Padua 1744-1833), a nobleman from Padua, knight of Malta, bibliophile, collector and inspector-conservationist of paintings in Padua and its environment from 1793 onwards. The painting shows St James, St John the Evangelist and a Trogir saint - blessed Augustin Kažotić (c. 1260-1323) - who was a bishop of Zagreb and Lucera. According to archival records, the citizens of Trogir provided Matteini with information about the saint and an older painting which served as a model for the new portrait. The painting was set in the new marble altar which had been installed by Nicolò and Zuane Degani in 1802.At Ca’ Pesaro (Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna) in Venice, there is a drawing from 1805 signed by Matteini (pencil on paper, 431 x 283 mm) which depicts St James and is a preparatory sketch for his portrait on the Trogir painting.

Streszczenie:
This paper presents the results of three different approaches applied to the newly-restored titular painting entitled The Conversion of St Paul, the main altarpiece in the Mdina Cathedral in Malta. This large, dramatic painting is the work of the Baroque artist, Mattia Preti, known as il Cavaliere Calabrese. Here, we focus on the results of the digital photogrammetric survey that adopts image-based approaches for 2D/3D model reconstruction. The model was used to quantify important features of the painting as well extensions of the areas restored. In addition, portable X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectroscopies were used to non-destructively identify the nature of the painting materials, at the elemental and molecular spatial scales, respectively, with the ultimate goal of reconstructing the colour palette of the artist. The 3D model developed here could be applied to other paintings of Preti to conduct comparisons between different measurements in the paintings, with the main goal of clarifying the technique used by the artist. This information, along with the characterisation of the materials used, is crucial for the reconstruction of the historical–geographical context of the artwork, since specific pigmenting agents and media tend to represent the stylistic expression of an artist or an epoque.

Methods of estimation of tourist and recreational resources are traced; the analysis of natural tourist and recreational resources of the Republic of Malta is carried out; the analysis of historical and cultural tourist and recreational resources of the country is carried out; a point assessment of the country’s provision of tourist and recreational resources; the place of the Republic of Malta on the tourist market of Ukraine is revealed. The Republic of Malta is one of the few countries in the world with such a large and diverse historical and cultural site. The lands of the country have experienced centuries of historical events, after which there are memories in the form of cathedrals, palaces, museums, fortifications, etc. Malta has been established as a country with an ancient history. It has a large number of unique cultural monuments, as there were Carthaginians and Phoenicians, Roman and Byzantine empires, Arabs, knights of the Order of St. John, Napoleon, the British Empire. The country’s historical and cultural tourist resources make it interesting for tourists to visit. Malta has a great historical past, which has left a great legacy in the form of ancient fortresses, churches, cathedrals, majestic palaces. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is no exception for the country; there are 3 of them in the list. There are 7 sites in the country that are also currently candidates for inclusion in the World Heritage List. The country is rich in fortifications; there are 35 units in the country, which are of particular interest for tourists. Most of the fortifications were built during the Order of Malta to fortify the country from invaders. The natural conditions of Malta, which are the basis for tourism development, are analyzed. Methods for estimating the tourist potential of the country have been studied, in particular: normative-index, balance, graphic, cartographic, expert, statistical and mathematical methods, scoring. Integrated indicators for each region of Malta were determined using a score. Three categories of regions have been identified according to the assessment of the tourist potential of the territory.

The cult of St James within the Order of St John was evident throughout its stay in Malta in the architectural fabric it left behind, particularly the fortified land-front of the city of Valletta, as well as in other notable buildings, namely the Auberge of Castile, León and Portugal, and its church of St James. While its architectural aspects have withstood the test of time, other social aspects of the cult of Santiago in Malta are evident through the religious art in the Conventual Church of the Order in Valletta, today St John’s co-cathedral, but also through religious rituals held on the island during the stay of the knights. This reflected a local cult which shows hints of being present also before the arrival of the Hospitaller Order to the Maltese shores.

Streszczenie:
Early-music performances were a rarity in Malta until a few years ago. Slowly, over the years, harpsichords started to appear in concerts and a retired doctor began to build clavichords. During a series of fundraising concerts for the restoration of one of Valletta's oldest churches, a male-voice choir was formed to sing renaissance polyphony. This fervent activity led a local artist, Kenneth Zammit Tabona, to dream of a baroque music festival in the island's capital, Valletta. January 2013 saw the first Valletta International Baroque Festival, with concerts held in several of Valletta's baroque edifices, including the magnificent Manoel Theatre (built in 1731 and one of the oldest working theatres in Europe) and the awe-inspiring St John's Co-Cathedral, the church of the Knights of Malta. The first year was a resounding success and augured well for the future, as was confirmed in the second year of the festival.

A. 92 inf. , (1166/7). Les interventions opérées ultérieurement sur le codex ont été étudiées. Il en ressort que le manuscrit se trouvait à Malte vers 1400.

Streszczenie:
This chapter describes and explains the Holy Grail Route, its process of design as a tourism product, and the tools and methodologies that proved very useful in coming up with new tourism services for the route. This was based on a European research COSME project within the H2020 program, which ran from 2014 to 2016, with the objective being to plan and promote a European thematic, tourist, and transnational route. The basic idea arising from the project is the international collective imagery surrounding the Holy Grail and its traditions, legends, and culture (novels, films, tales), and creating a European route in which different countries and partners are represented: Bulgaria, Greece, Malta, Spain, and Great Britain. The route explores different ideas and topics such as the Arthurian legends, Cathar stories, and Christian traditions. In the case of Spain, the Christian traditions are very deep and have a huge popular appeal. The authors have found modern novels, historical representations, and cultural movements created specifically around it, and a great many Christians wanting to work in the sphere of this important relic, the Holy Grail, which is kept in Valencia cathedral and, for centuries, was in the territory of Aragon. What are the main goals of this project? What kind of social and economic agents have been involved in it? Both the theoretical framework and methods used will be explained in this chapter.
