Streszczenie:
The article focuses on the problem of research methodology in linguistics and argues that motion pictures, or feature films, provide a good source of empirical data for a realistic investigation of language as a communicative behavior. Evidence from epistemology and philosophy of science shows that scriptism and rationalism as two dominating methodologies in traditional linguistics do not give a whole picture of language functionality because through them we cannot observe a human's communicative behavior in dynamics. The aim of the article is to offer an alternative understanding of the subject-matter, method and data for linguistic research which would be grounded on human experience observable in films. In particular, the term 'languaging' is adopted to describe the dynamic process of experience construction in referential and attentional framings. The investigation of languaging is thus based on the principle of holism, circularity and 'double perspectival' view of one's experience. The author of the article gives a number of reasons why written texts alone do not provide reliable data in this respect and why motion pictures are a more viable alternative. The paper introduces the methodology of holistic research and open-ended experiential analysis and demonstrates in a case study how counterfactuals as grammatically and experientially enacted patterns can be observed and investigated in the film Atonement.

Streszczenie:
This article proposes a reconceptualization of the term “actor” within motion pictures and presents the argument that “acting” is a matter of distributed agency performed by heterogeneous assemblages. What constitutes an actor is what I will label as a “cinematic actor assemblage,” a term that comprises what is commonly known as human actors as well as material entities that play an active part in motion picture images. The use of intra-diegetic cameras in contemporary found footage horror films constitutes a particular case of such cinematic actor assemblages. Through a dynamic relational performance, cameras here take on roles as active agents with the potential to affect other elements within the images as well as the films’ audiences. In found footage horror the assemblage mode of operation creates suspense, since the vulnerability of the camera threatens the viewer's access to the depicted events. While human characters and individual entities making up the camera assemblage are disposable, the recording is not. Found footage horror crucially hinges upon the survival of the footage. I will further suggest that these films allow filmmakers to experiment with the acting capabilities of intra-diegetic cameras.

We investigate the influence of oscillating normal force on the frictional sliding. Frictional sliding in the case of a simple mass-spring model of Burridge and Knopoff type demonstrates stick-slip even when the friction coefficient is constant. Oscillations of the normal force in this case do not produce noticeable changes in the stick-slip sliding mode. A completely different picture is observed when the oscillations of normal force are applied to the system, which is in the state of steady sliding. In this case the normal oscillations turn the steady sliding into stick slip. A special case is observed when the normal force oscillates with the eigen frequency of the stick-slip motion. Then, no matter how small the amplitude of oscillations is the system reaches the same final stick-slip regime. The time required to reach this limiting regime is inversely proportional to the amplitude of oscillations of the normal force.

Streszczenie:
AbstractEinstein’s general theory of relativity from 19151 remains the most successful description of gravitation. From the 1919 solar eclipse2 to the observation of gravitational waves3, the theory has passed many crucial experimental tests. However, the evolving concepts of dark matter and dark energy illustrate that there is much to be learned about the gravitating content of the universe. Singularities in the general theory of relativity and the lack of a quantum theory of gravity suggest that our picture is incomplete. It is thus prudent to explore gravity in exotic physical systems. Antimatter was unknown to Einstein in 1915. Dirac’s theory4 appeared in 1928; the positron was observed5 in 1932. There has since been much speculation about gravity and antimatter. The theoretical consensus is that any laboratory mass must be attracted6 by the Earth, although some authors have considered the cosmological consequences if antimatter should be repelled by matter7–10. In the general theory of relativity, the weak equivalence principle (WEP) requires that all masses react identically to gravity, independent of their internal structure. Here we show that antihydrogen atoms, released from magnetic confinement in the ALPHA-g apparatus, behave in a way consistent with gravitational attraction to the Earth. Repulsive ‘antigravity’ is ruled out in this case. This experiment paves the way for precision studies of the magnitude of the gravitational acceleration between anti-atoms and the Earth to test the WEP.

Streszczenie:
AbstractHigh resolution HI observations of nearby dwarf galaxies (most of which are situated in the M81 group at a distance of about 3·2 Mpc) reveal that their neutral interstellar medium (ISM) is dominated by hole-like features most of which are expanding. A comparison of the physical properties of these holes with the ones found in more massive spiral galaxies (such as M31 and M33) shows that they tend to reach much larger sizes in dwarf galaxies. This can be understood in terms of the galaxy's gravitational potential. The origin of these features is still a matter of debate. In general, young star forming regions (OB-associations) are held responsible for their formation. This picture, however, is not without its critics and other mechanisms such as the infall of high velocity clouds, turbulent motions or even gamma ray bursters have been recently proposed. Here I will present one example of a supergiant shell in IC 2574 which corroborates the picture that OB associations are indeed creating these structures. This particular supergiant shell is currently the most promising case to study the effects of the combined effects of stellar winds and supernova explosions which shape the neutral interstellar medium of (dwarf) galaxies.

The results of stability analyses for the onset of convective motion are reported for the following three horizontally superposed systems of porous and fluid layers: (a) a porous layer sandwiched between two fluid layers with rigid top and bottom boundaries, (b) a fluid layer overlying a layer of porous medium, and (c) a fluid layer sandwiched between two porous layers. By changing the depth ratio dˆ from zero to infinity, a set of stability criteria (i.e., the critical Rayleigh number Rac and the critical wave number ac) is obtained, ranging from the case of a fluid layer between two rigid boundaries to the case of a porous layer between two impermeable boundaries. The effects of k/km (the thermal conductivity ratio), δ (the square root of the Darcy number), and α (the nondimensional proportionality constant in the slip condition) on Rac and ac are also examined in detail. The results in this paper, combined with those reported previously for Case (a) (Pillatsis et al., 1987), will provide a comprehensive picture of the interaction between a porous and a fluid layer.

Studies of propaganda in Allied countries during World War II for the most part concern either printed matter or cinema, while animated films (cartoons) have been much less investigated in this regard. The present article is devoted to the representation and reflection of World War II in American cartoons in 1941–1945 — an unusual and little-studied issue in Russian historiography. Specific examples and artistic features, as well as approaches to the use of cartoons as a means of propaganda, are considered. Within the framework of the article, samples of propaganda cartoons were analyzed, a certain typology of setting images and placing accents was derived, and conclusions were drawn about the importance of animation in the development of propaganda. Specific examples show the transformation of animation to suit military interests and the connection of the largest (and not only) film industry representatives with the state. Also, within the framework of the article, it was analyzed how the state interacted with animators and studios, along with how it itself was involved in the creation of propaganda and animation films. In particular, the history and activities of the “First Motion Picture Unit” and the first results of its work at the beginning of the war were considered. The case studies showed how American animation was modified in response to new needs and characteristics of the market, how existing characters were used for propaganda purposes and new works were created, as well as what stereotypes about America’s opponents were formed in cartoons. The article is based on literature and sources on the topic.

Innovative approach to reveal the relationship between matter and consciousness has been proposed. It is shown that the relevance of the problem is determined today by new discoveries of the natural sciences which cannot be explained from the standpoint of the existing categorical apparatus and features of the development of modern human civilization. Individual and collective awareness of the physical picture of the world and the place of individuals in it began to significantly lag behind the achieved level of research in natural sciences. Earlier, mankind was simply interested in the laws of nature as such, but the question arises now: why are they exactly like these, and not different? Do they contain any "intelligence"? What forces keep in equilibrium the world given to us in our sensation? The analysis of space physics in the present context is, first of all, an analysis of the primacy or secondariness of being, matter and information. According to the author's assumption, we move in time on the scale of informational exploration of the world in the opposite direction with respect to the information which becomes exhausted on the periphery of the world, but not on the scale of distances. With this view of the physics of the process, we can imagine that it is not galaxies that are moving apart, but information contained in the radiation from other galaxies has a redshift effect. The farther away a galaxy, the more exhausted is the information, the less it is and the slower time should go by. The red shift (cosmological, the Doppler effect) in the spectrum of galaxies can be a consequence of hunger for information on the horizon of the events of the development of the Universe. So, the galactlic dispersal must take place in all directions, which provides an equilibrium between space, time, mass, and information. In this, motion does not act as a form of existence of matter. The form of the existence of matter is the information about it. In this case, radiation is the energy form of information about the object of radiation. Therefore, space boundary cannot be the presence of physical objects. The boundary of space is the availability of information about space, its growth or 'burnout', which is equivalent to the dispersal of galaxies or their collapse. The information expires, the purpose of the existence of our material-spatial dimension will end. In our opinion, the paradox of our knowledge may consist in the fact that galaxies are moving away from one another on the information scale rather than on the physical one, and we perceive the real world in the form of information about it. In terms of primacy, it is our thinking and being that are secondary in relation to information which in its entirety covers and extends its influence on the entire space. If this were not the case, space would have lost its stability, becoming chaos. Consequently, it should be concluded that information is a highly organized system capable of "self-awareness and thinking".

This study aims to evaluate the impact of new credit lines to Brazilian movie exhibition industry, one of the existing forms of government support for this sector. The evaluated disbursements, conducted by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), from 2007 to 2012, consist of long-term credit for opening new screens, with below-market interest rates and a flexible collateral structure. The econometric methodology used is the Synthetic Control Method, as formalized by Abadie et al. (2010). Under this method, it was not possible to identify any positive contribution of the credit policy after comparing the individual performance of the exhibitors who received the credit versus their synthetic controls, nor on the evolution of the number of screens nor on admissions. Furthermore, a possible aggregate effect was tested, considering the evolution of the Brazilian number of admissions per capita, also with no positive contribution of the policy being identified.

This chapter investigates how financial constraints and financial crises affect the cash policy of firms. Using a sample of 157,505 firm-years from 26 developing Asian economies from 1991 to 2016, firm fixed effects are employed to mitigate unobserved heterogeneity. Empirical findings show that financially constrained firms have higher cash than financially unconstrained firms, which is in line with the precautionary motive and transaction motive of cash. The picture changes with the rise of financial crises. While financially constrained firms have lower cash before the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis, they increase their cash level more after the 2008-2009 global financial crisis. Overall, managers need to consider the exogenous shocks to enhance their liquidity management. Also, investors should consider the financial crises, firm size, firm constraint, and dividend payment status when determining when and where to invest.

This chapter, by Nathaniel Brennan, discusses the efforts of the Museum of Modern Art Film Library to make use of captured enemy motion pictures on behalf of the federal government’s wartime intelligence programs during World War II. While the chapter presents an overview of the film library’s governmental intelligence work, ranging from matters of storage to the challenges of training analysts, the central case study examines the work of British anthropologist Gregory Bateson, whose work at the film library consisted of trying to define an objective approach to the study of culture through cinema and the preparation of a test film that would instruct American soldiers about the peculiarities of the German character. Although Bateson’s plans did not materialize, the efforts of Margaret Mead to adapt Bateson’s anthropological film methodology for the Cold War nonetheless influenced the development of postwar film studies and the analysis of national cinemas.
