Emerging from the Paris surrealist group, the English-born writer and painter Leonora Carrington (England, 1917—Mexico, 2011) was perpetually suspicious of orthodoxy. She often pokes fun at, parodies, and ultimately upsets traditional hierarchies of power. In her work animals impart wisdom, Goddesses loom large, and domestic spaces become sites of occult power. In this article, I investigate Carrington’s suspicion of gurus with claims to esoteric truth. Carrington participated in Fourth Way groups run by students of G. I. Gurdjieff (Christopher Fremantle) and P. D. Ouspensky (Rodney Collin). However, while she had a deep interest in the teachings, Carrington remained suspicious of the group practices of the Fourth Way, as can be seen in Elena Poniatowska’s fictionalized biography Leonora (2015). This article explores Carrington’s contact with the ‘Work’ in order to shed light on the character of Dr. Gambit in her 1950 novel, The Hearing Trumpet, commonly thought to be a parody of Gurdjieff. In doing so, it will investigate Carrington’s feminist objections to the role of the guru, while also contributing to a discussion of the unease some felt toward the praxis of the Fourth Way, despite their attraction to the philosophy.

Mr Samuel Carrington of Wetton, Staffordshire, was a careful collector of Carboniferous fossils over many years. In particular, he collected many fine and unusual examples of brachiopods, including several new species described by Thomas Davidson (mostly in 1863); some of these remain unknown from other localities and with insecure classifications. The value of Carrington's material lies in the detailed notes on localities and associated faunas which accompany his fossils, and which Davidson commonly quoted in his publications. Several of these notes remain with Carrington specimens in the collection of material figured by Davidson in his classic Palaeontographical Society Monographs, now housed in the British Museum (Natural History).

The Carrington event in 1859, a solar flare with an associated geomagnetic storm, has served as a prototype of possible superflare occurrence on the Sun. Recent geophysical (14C signatures in tree rings) and precise time-series photometry [the bolometric total solar irradiance (TSI) for the Sun, and the broadband photometry from Kepler and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, for the stars] have broadened our perspective on extreme events and the threats that they pose for Earth and for Earth-like exoplanets. This review assesses the mutual solar and/or stellar lessons learned and the status of our theoretical understanding of the new data, both stellar and solar, as they relate to the physics of the Carrington event. The discussion includes the event's implied coronal mass ejection, its potential “solar cosmic ray” production, and the observed geomagnetic disturbances based on the multimessenger information already available in that era. Taking the Carrington event as an exemplar of the most extreme solar event, and in the context of our rich modern knowledge of solar flare and/or coronal mass ejection events, we discuss the aspects of these processes that might be relevant to activity on solar-type stars, and in particular their superflares. ▪ The Carrington flare of 1859, though powerful, did not significantly exceed the magnitudes of the greatest events observed in the modern era. ▪ Stellar “superflare” events on solar-type stars may share common paradigms, and also suggest the possibility of a more extreme solar event at some time in the future. ▪ We benefit from comparing the better-known microphysics of solar flares and coronal mass ejections with the diversity of related stellar phenomena.

Cette thèse est consacrée à l’étude en regard l’une de l’autre des œuvres picturales et littéraires de deux artistes nées en Europe, qui fréquentèrent les cercles surréalistes parisiens dans les années 30 avant de s’exiler au Mexique durant la seconde guerre mondiale : Remedios Varo (1908-1963) et Leonora Carrington (1917-2011). Il s’agit de rechercher les points de convergence et les divergences entre les processus créatifs des deux artistes, de faire dialoguer leurs œuvres et d’interroger leurs points de collaboration créative, en se centrant sur la question des images. L’approche proposée dans ce travail est tout à la fois comparative et pluridisciplinaire, puisqu’elle s’élabore au croisement de l’histoire de l’art, de l’analyse littéraire, de l’analyse picturale et de la civilisation.Le concept d’image, dont la délimitation fait l’objet du préambule, est entendu dans quasiment toutes ses acceptions – depuis l’image picturale et l’image verbale jusqu’à l’image mentale, dont l’image onirique – et est conçu comme lieu d’intersection par excellence.La première partie de ce travail explore la question de la fabrique des images ou, pour utiliser une métaphore empruntée au langage alchimique, du laboratoire des images. Le chapitre 1 présente et théorise l’image surréaliste afin de démontrer la manière dont les deux créatrices ont su s’approprier l’« esprit » du surréalisme, invitation à une remise en cause du monde visible, pour mieux le dépasser à travers l’élaboration de « modèles de monde », en analogie avec certains processus alchimiques et occultistes. Le chapitre 2 envisage pour sa part l’exil non pas seulement comme un contexte historique et culturel ayant donné lieu à de profondes dynamiques d’influences mutuelles, mais comme une notion pivot permettant d’appréhender les phénomènes de réappropriations, d’hybridations, de transfusions créatives ou de transgressions à l’œuvre dans leurs productions.La seconde partie approfondit la mise en regard des images des deux artistes suivant un mouvement dialectique unissant images-reflets et images-distorsions. Le chapitre 3 entreprend l’analyse des autoreprésentations féminines et s’attache à mettre en évidence la façon dont celles-ci défient les images du féminin élaborées par les créateurs surréalistes masculins ; les notions de déguisement, de travestissement et de mascarade sont examinées et présentées comme inséparables de la quête de soi. Le chapitre 4, enfin, s’intéresse aux « miroirs de la relation » et à la « relation aux miroirs » des deux artistes. Dans un premier temps sont abordées les représentations de l’amitié créative unissant les deux artistes dans leur œuvre, notamment écrite, et les mécanismes de fictionnalisation qui les soutiennent. Les jeux de miroirs qu’ont disposés entre leurs images les deux femmes en écrivant à quatre mains sont ensuite analysés, ainsi que le motif pictural du miroir, lequel peut être considéré comme un emblème de la démarche créative de Remedios Varo et de Leonora Carrington, objet symbolique et magique plus que dispositif spéculaire
This PhD dissertation focuses on a literary and pictorial comparative analysis of European-born artists Remedios Varo (1908-1963) and Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) who, in the 1930s, participated in the Surrealist group in Paris and then went into exile in Mexico during World War II. The purpose of this study is to identify points of convergence and divergence in the creative process of these two artists. Equally important, this thesis will endeavor to enable a dialogue between their artworks and to examine their creative collaboration while focusing on the concept of images. The standpoint of this dissertation is at the same time comparative and multidisciplinary, for it is formulated at the junction of art history, literary analysis, pictorial analysis, and history.The notion of image, the conceptual contours of which are explained in the preamble 2 is to be understood in almost all of its significations – from pictorial and verbal image to mind-made image, in which oneiric image is to be included – and is seen as a conceptual intersection point par excellence.The first part of this study questions the construction of images or, using a metaphor borrowed from the alchemical language, the image laboratory. Chapter 1 introduces and theorizes the notion of surrealist image in order to reveal the ways in which both artists integrated into their works the surrealist state of mind, being an invitation to question the visible world, and went beyond it through the elaboration of “world models”, by analogy with specific alchemical and occultist processes. Chapter 2 not only considers exile as a historical and cultural context that gave way to profound mutual and dynamic influences, but also as a pivotal notion that enables to comprehend, in their productions, phenomena of reappropriation, hybridization, creative transfusion and transgression.The second part delves deeper into the comparison of images realized by both artists – an analysis that follows a dialectical pattern that combines the concepts of image-reflections and image-distortions. Chapter 3 analyzes female self-representations and is dedicated to reveal the way in which these representations challenge the images of the feminine as elaborated by male surrealist creators. Notions of transvestism and masquerade are examined and presented as inseparable from the quest to self-discovery.Finally, Chapter 4 pays attention to both artists’ “mirrors of relation” and “relation to mirrors”. On the one hand, this analysis addresses the creative friendship that unites both artists in their work, more specifically in their written expression, and the mechanisms of fictionalization pertaining to it. The mirror effects that are at play in the images of both artists who created fourhanded works and the pictorial motif of the mirror are also focused on in this research. Indeed, the mirror may be considered as an emblem of Remedios Varo’s and Leonora Carrington’s creative approach, not only as a specular tool but also and more importantly, as an object of symbolism and magic

Titel: Förväntningsgapet ur två perspektiv Problemdiskussion: Ett förväntningsgap uppstår när intressenter har förväntningar på revisorn som inte motsvarar vad revisorn egentligen ska eller får göra. I de allra flesta fall handlar det om att förväntningarna är för höga. Många tror alltså att revisorer ska göra mer än vad som krävs av dem enligt lag. Förväntningsgapet beskrivs ofta som något negativt men genom vår studie vill vi bidra till en syn på förväntningsgapet ur ett annat perspektiv. Syfte: Syftet med uppsatsen är att utreda förväntningsgapet på ett sätt som snarare handlar om de föreställningar som finns om revisorer och om dessa aspekter har någon påverkan på förväntningsgapet. Målet är att undersöka om det finns positiva aspekter med förväntningsgapet och vilka dessa i sådana fall är. Avgränsningar: Vi har genomfört ett begränsat antal intervjuer samt hållit oss till vår lokala ort, Jönköping. Metod: Vi har genomfört intervjuer med 21 företag, 13 studenter, 4 revisionsbyråer samt 10 slumpvis utvalda personer. Intervjuerna har genomförts med en kombination av kvalitativ och kvantitativ metod. Vi har dessutom gjort en genomgång av vetenskapliga artiklar och böcker för att få pålitlig och vetenskapligt säkerställd fakta. Resultat och slutsats: Vi har genom vår studie ifrågasatt den negativa aspekten av förväntningsgapet och kommit fram till att förväntningsgapet varierar bland revisorers olika intressenter. Störst är förväntningsgapet från allmänheten och studenter som sällan eller aldrig kommer i kontakt med revisorer och där har gapet visat sig ha en positiv inverkan på revisorers status. Gapet har också visat sig vara positivt bland mindre företag där ovissheten om vad en revisor gör är stor. Bland stora företag är förväntningsgapet betydligt mindre eller nästintill obefintligt och där är också revisorers anseende inte lika högt. Förväntningsgapet minskar ju större kunskaper som finns och därmed också revisors anseende.

This thesis focuses on the relationship between Dora Carrington and Lytton Strachey and offers three models for reading their unconventional relationship. Carrington was in love with the homosexual Strachey and the two lived together at Tidmarsh, and later Ham Spray House, for more than fourteen years. The three models make extensive use of primary sources, namely the letters and diaries of Carrington and Strachey. Furthermore, I draw on two seminal biographies of Carrington and Strachey written by Gretchen Gerzina and Michael Holroyd respectively. The first model I examine is a form of pederasty. I argue that, soon after they met, Carrington and Strachey began a friendship which was based on his educating her in a variety of ways. He served as a mentor both intellectually and sexually. Strachey was familiar with the concept of pederasty as a result of his involvement with the Cambridge Conversazione Society, better known as the Apostles, and used his knowledge to induct a rather naïve Carrington into new ways of thinking. This pederastic relationship also allowed Carrington a certain amount of freedom as it enabled her to pursue her art without the demands a heterosexual male would make of her. The second model for reading their relationship is that of parody. While Carrington and Strachey’s relationship resembles a heteronormative relationship, it can, at times, be read as parodic. I argue that they both subvert heteronormativity in humorous ways as a means to critique their parents’ Victorian marriages and to interrogate notions of masculinity vi and femininity. I discuss the roles they played within their domestic environment, and pay particular attention to how this intersected with Carrington’s artistic endeavours. This parodying of heteronormativity was, I suggest, also one of the only ways they could find of expressing the love they felt for one another. The last model I offer draws on theories of kinship. I examine how Carrington and Strachey resorted to familial constructions of descent as a means to veil the love they had for one another and to avoid criticism and ridicule from the Bloomsbury group and beyond. When they established a home at Tidmarsh, they altered their form of kinship to utilise principles of alliance. However, another shift took place with the introduction of Ralph Partridge, Carrington’s husband, and I argue that the terms they used to address each other changed to constructions, once again, of descent, at least until the dissolution of the Carrington-Partridge marriage. Carrington and Strachey’s relationship is often viewed as unconventional and she is often depicted as being utterly subservient towards him. However, the three models I have used demonstrate that their love was mutual. The models also reveal their relationship to be quite conventional in the manner in which Carrington and Strachey expressed their love for one another and how these expressions of love developed during the different phases of the life they spent together.

This paper presents a simple approach to evaluate risk to transformer units from geomagnetic storms. A simple fuzzy logic based approach was used to develop the model which is capable of categorizing transformers in a fleet into three risk categories, i.e., high, medium and low. This model may be used as a first screening step to evaluate a fleet of transformers without conducting time consuming simulations and studies. Critical factors that affect geomagnetically induced current (GIC) flow are used as input parameters to the model. These factors include location-specific, equipment-specific and geomagnetic storm event-specific factors. Location-specific factors include geomagnetic latitude of the location, earth conductivity structure at location and distance of location from coast. Equipment-specific factors include transformer rating and age. The storm event-specific factor of geoelectric field strength was used which is an indication of the return period of the geomagnetic disturbance event. The paper describes the implementation of this model to evaluate fleet risk for a 1 in 100 year event and the Carrington event (largest recorded geomagnetic storm in history). The fuzzy logic membership functions for the inputs are described in detail and the performance of the fuzzy logic model is evaluated.

The objective of the article is to study the challenges of digitalization of civic education of students in a socio-cultural safe educational environment and to describe the ways to address them, based on the implementation of digital technologies presented in the form of Allan Carrington's Pedagogical Wheel. The methodological basis of the article is the theory of human security and humanization of education; informative-environmental, cybernetic, culturological approaches to civic education in the socio-cultural educational environment. The research methods included analysis, synthesis, and synthesis of the scientific literature, thesis research, and publications on the topic. Empirical methods: questionnaires, discussion, and survey (offline). The theoretical positions presented in the paper complement the main points of education digitalization, enriching the theory and methodology of pedagogical science.

Tässä hankkeessa kerättiin tietoa äärimmäisen voimakkaiden avaruussää-myrskyjen vaikutuksista erilaisiin teknisiin järjestelmiin. Selvitykseen osallistuivat Ilmatieteen laitos, Helsingin yliopisto (HY, Avaruusfysiikan tutkimus) ja Change in Momentum -yritys. Raportissa esitellään laajasta kirjallisuustutkimuksesta kerättyä tietoa voimakkaista myrskyistä ja tietokonesimulaatioiden tuloksia. Raportin loppuosassa käsitellään avaruussäämyrskyihin liittyviä suoria ja välillisiä yhteiskunnallisia riskejä, kuvataan verrokkimaiden kansallisten riskiarvioiden tuloksia jaesitellään varautumisharjoituksiin soveltuva äärimmäisen avaruusmyrskyn skenaario. Kirjallisuustutkimuksessa kiinnitettiin erityistä huomiota avaruus-säämyrskyjen aiheuttamiin ongelmiin sähkönjakelujärjestelmissä niiden laajojen kerrannaisvaikutusten vuoksi. Nopeat vaihtelut Maan magneetti-kentässä synnyttävät jakelujärjestelmiin haitallisia geomagneettisesti indusoituneita (GI) virtoja. Äärimmäisten myrskyjen aikaan saattaa esiintyä jopa kolme kertaa suurempia magneettikentän aikaderivaattoja Euroopassa mitattuihin arvoihin verrattuna. Haittavaikutuksille altis alue ulottuu Keski- ja Etelä-Eurooppaan asti. Meidän tulee siis varautua myrskyjen aiheuttamiin välillisiin vaikutuksiin esim. kansainvälisten toimitusketjujen ongelmien seurauksena, vaikka Suomen sähkönjakelujärjestelmän GI-virtojen sietokyvyn tiedetään olevan hyvä. Koska geomagneettisia myrskyjä riittävän tarkasti kuvaavat aikasarjat ovat verrattain lyhyitä (<150 vuotta), tilastollisissa arvioissa esiintymistodennäköisyyksille esiintyy vielä paljon vaihtelua. Kirjallisuudessa annetut arviot yleisesti vertailukohteena käytetyn vuoden 1859 Carrington-myrskyn kaltaisen ääritapahtuman todennäköisyy-delle seuraavan 10 vuoden sisällä vaihtelevat välillä 0,5–20 %. Hankkeessa testattiin ensimmäistä kertaa Helsingin yliopiston Vlasiator-simulaatiota avaruussäämyrskyjen mallinnuksessa erityisesti satelliittien toimintaympäristöön liittyen. Suurteholaskentaa vaativa Vlasiator on maailman ainoa mallinnustyökalu, joka kattaa koko lähiavaruuden ja kuvaa tarkasti avaruusplasman ionien vaikutuksen myrskyjen kehittymiseen. Simulaatiot osoittivat, että äärimmäisten myrskyjen aikaan geostationaariset ja navigointi-satelliitit menettävät ajoittain magnetosfäärin antaman suojan Auringon hiukkaspurkauksia vastaan. Geostationaaristen satelliittien hiukkasmittausten perusteella HY:n tutkijat arvioivat myös, että korkeaenergiaisten elektronien vuot saattavat olla äärimmäisissä tilanteissa 1–3 kertaluokkaa suuremmat kuin aiempien myrskyjen aikana mitatut satelliittiteknologialle ongelmia aiheuttaneet vuot. Tässä hankkeessa vuosina 2021–2022 tehtyjä Vlasiatorajoja ja muuta tutkimustyötä tarkennetaan ja laajennetaan Suomen Akatemian rahoittamassa “Preparing for the most extreme space weather” -hankeessa vuosina 2020–2023.
