One of the most important decisions a person makes is their career choice, which will shape their future. The investigation examined cultural factors' impact on Bwari Area Council students' career choices in Abuja, Nigeria. Two hypotheses guided the research. All Bwari Area Council senior secondary school students are studied. The study includes all SSII male and female seniors. The study selected 315 SSII students using simple random sampling. The study included 63 students from each of the five schools. The self-structured questionnaire Influence of Sociocultural Factors on the Career Choice of Students (ISCFCCCS) with sub-instruments (Cultural and Socioeconomic Influences on Career Choice) and Career Choice Questionnaire (CCQ) with reliability coefficients of 0.88, 0.86, and 0.75 were used to collect data. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found that culture and parents' socioeconomic status strongly influence students' career choices. The study recommends that school leaders teach students about social factors that may influence their career choice. Parents should also stop pushing their kids into careers they don't fit into. Guardians should be cautious about pushing their children toward unrealistic careers. Parents should also work with school advising or professional guides to help their children choose smart careers. Women continue to be disproportionately underrepresented in science and engineering fields. A model for career choice is proposed that includes both the direct and indirect effects that socializers can play in determining career choices. A sample of 2213 high school seniors from nine schools in Rhode Island were surveyed about their academic and career choices and the perceived influences on those choices. Parents and teachers were perceived to be influences on career choice more often for students (both men and women) choosing careers in engineering and science than for those not choosing such careers. Pay was a more important factor in career choice for men in general, and genuine interest was a more important factor for women not choosing careers in engineering or science. However, these gender differences do not appear among students with extremely strong mathematics and science coursework backgrounds, even though there remains a marked disparity in the proportion of men to women planning careers in engineering or science. Teachers may play a particularly important role in influencing the career choice of some of these women. Equity of access and encouragement in mathematics and science is certainly a necessary, but insufficient, condition for improving the representation of women in science and engineering.

In recent years, career decision-making has attracted research attention, especially choosing careers among graduates. Making informed and appropriate career choices are positively related to work performance and career success. The present study investigates the factors influencing career choice among social work graduates. A sample of 417 social work graduates was recruited to complete the survey. Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Our results show that there is a positive correlation between environmental, interpersonal, institutional, external, internal factors and career choice. Additionally, multiple regression analysis indicates that external and internal factors influence career choice among graduates. The present findings contribute to the general discussion about the influential factors in graduates' career choices. University administrators must develop career guidance and counseling programs more broadly in universities to support graduates in making appropriate career choices. High school age or adolescence is in the exploration stage where at this stage students should already focus on determining careers in a more specific range, but not a final choice. The success of education obtained by individuals is one of the keys to the success of the state. In education, various things are taught to become the provision of individuals in the future. This research is motivated by the low career choices of students while determining a career is very important for their future. The purpose of this research is to analyze the factors that influence students' career choices. This type of research is qualitative. The data in this study were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation. The type of data analysis used is descriptive and qualitative analysis. Based on the data obtained from the research subjects, it shows that there are four factors that influence students' career choices, namely, intelligence and special talents (all three students are influenced), interest in careers (all three students are influenced), personality (both students are influenced), and family background and socioeconomic status (all three students are influenced). So the conclusion is that the factors that influence students' career choices are from themselves and their families.

Career choice is one of the most important decisions that students make, and this decision will affect them throughout their lives. This study adopts a descriptive research survey method for assessing career conflict options of senior secondary school students in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria. The data contains questionnaires administered to 373 male and female secondary school students from three private schools and three public schools in the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government. The data obtained from the questionnaires were categorized into a Demographic Data Inventory, Career Choice Scale, and Support, Interference, and Lack of Engagement Scale. Demographic information was analyzed using descriptive statistics, and simple linear regression analysis was used to test the three hypotheses generated for the study at 0.05 alpha levels of significance. The findings suggest that parental formal education has a significant effect on the choice of careers of students, and that the profession of parents has a minor influence on the choice of careers of students. The results also indicate that the socio-economic status of parents does not affect the career choice of secondary school students. Based on the findings, this study recommends that parents be trained in career counseling to help parents direct their children in their career choices. Counseling units in the Ministry of Education should also coordinate orientation activities and provide information on the broad variety of career opportunities open to students. Finally, future research should be carried out on the contradictory effect of teachers and school counselors on the career choices of secondary school students.

The study investigated the role of teachers and parents on students’ career choice preparedness as perceived by secondary schools’ students in Meru District, Tanzania, using survey research design. Through systematic and purposive sampling, the sample of 406 students from 10 schools filled the questionnaire. Validity was established through expert judgment and the questionnaire was subjected to pilot testing whereby Cronbach’s Alpha of above 0.700 was established prior to data collection. Data was analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test and Pearson correlation. The study concluded that students are well prepared for career choice. Parents and teachers are perceived by students to have played their role very well for desired career choice. There is no significant difference in career choice preparedness by students characterized according to sex and location. Yet there is a significant positive relationship between parents and teachers’ involvement in career choice guidance and students’ career choice preparedness. Lastly, there is a positive relationship between teachers and parents’ involvement in students’ career choice preparedness. It was recommended that since students are focused with career choices of their interest, there is need for schools under investigation to provide a wide range of academic programs for students to choose appropriate subjects. Parents should continue to give career guidance, as the practice yields positive results toward students’ career choice preparedness. Since students’ future careers are positively influenced by teachers, teachers should guide students toward appropriate choice of career.

The author emphasizes the importance of career counselling for both students and parents in Pakistan. The study emphasizes the importance of providing students with adequate career counselling and awareness about different degree programs and career prospects. It is integral to making informed career decisions and can lead to career growth, success, and higher self-esteem. The lack of such counselling in Pakistan has resulted in limited career choices for female students and a negative perception of electronic media-related careers.

Summary Objective To report doctors' early career choices for obstetrics and gynaecology, their eventual career destinations and factors influencing their career pathways. Design Multi-cohort multi-purpose national questionnaire surveys of medical graduates in selected graduation years between 1974 and 2015. Setting UK. Participants UK-trained medical graduates. Main outcome measures Career specialty choices; certainty about specialty choice; factors which influenced doctors' career choices; career specialty destinations 10 years after graduation. Results Obstetrics and Gynaecology was the first choice of career for 5.7% of post-2002 graduates in year 1, 4.3% in year 3 and 3.8% in year 5. A much higher percentage of women than men specified Obstetrics and Gynaecology as their first choice: in year 1, 7.7% of women and 2.3% of men did so. The gender gap has widened since the 1970s and 1980s. In recent years, of those who specified Obstetrics and Gynaecology as their first choice in year 1 after graduation, 48% were working in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in year 10 (63% of men, 45% of women). Looking backwards from career destinations, 85% of doctors working in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in year 10 had specified Obstetrics and Gynaecology as a first, second or third choice of preferred career in year 1. Conclusions Interest in Obstetrics and Gynaecology among UK graduates appears to be exceeding the demand for new specialists. Policy needs to address risks of over-production of trainees and ensure that some graduates interested in Obstetrics and Gynaecology consider alternative careers. The large gender imbalance should encourage consideration of the reasons for men choosing Obstetrics and Gynaecology in falling numbers.

Chinese Malaysians who inherit the traditional Chinese culture have evolved with assimilation of globalisation with colonialism elements to form a myriad of cultural mélange, with an impact on career choice in STEM. Applying Stuart Hall’s theory of circuit of culture, a study deploying obituaries has been used to understand media and cultural influence on STEM career choice. Career as self-identity and social status has influenced Chinese Malaysian students’ career choice, with a hierarchy of prestige among them and medicine occupying the top position. Career choice for them in STEM is found to be limited to a few which are socially visible. In addition, the hegemony of “university”, “degree” over “college”, “diploma”, “vocational” and “training” has resulted in Chinese Malaysians to consider technical and vocational education and training as well as practical-oriented courses in STEM as second choice. This does not augur well for national human resource development in emerging fields in STEM. Alternative discourses and narratives for STEM careers with reimaging of nature of jobs for STEM careers to reconstruct perception towards STEM via the media and science communications could enhance the attractiveness of STEM careers. Additionally, multi-disciplinary approach to higher education and promotion of specific STEM careers based on market needs could bring STEM closer to students.

Career studies literature suggests that careers become more boundaryless and more global. Students, the agents of the choice of career, are not a homogeneous cohort anymore. We add to the discussion the students’ typology proposition for the career choice to further develop the graduate employability discourse. We make the first attempt to develop a student global vs local career taxonomy to contribute into understanding of graduate employability and career decision making. Our contribution offers a two-dimensional taxonomy, with one dimension being a type of student and another dimension being a career destination. The conceptual taxonomy is empirically tested with data from more than 400 business and economics students. We show that a global career choice would prevail above a local career choice for each of the student types. Our findings contribute into deeper understanding of career decision making and broadens our comprehension of the variety of global vs local careers for graduate employability. The study develops the future research agenda for career development researchers and multinational corporations’ (MNC) practitioners and practical agenda for teaching and learning in universities.

211 kindergarten children were interviewed in September and again in May concerning their career aspirations. On both occasions the interviewer asked for a first career choice; if something other than a real job was given, the interviewer asked for a second choice. During the September interview, 74% supplied a “real” career as their first choice and 10% gave real career responses as a second choice. Eight months later, 89% gave real careers as a first choice. Of those giving a real career response on the first occasion 46% chose the same occupation at the second interview, suggesting that kindergarten children have realistic career aspirations, and these aspirations are stable. Nonreal career aspirations appear to diminish during this period. Children from inner city schools had higher rates of nonreal responses and lower stability of choice than other groups.

Choosing a career can be hard when you have no idea what you want to do. However, there seems to be paucity of studies on career choices among senior high schools’ students in Ghana in general and Wa Municipality in particular. This study was intended to find out the career choices of students of Wa Senior High Technical School in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region of Ghana. A descriptive survey design was employed for the study. Data was collected from a sample of 80 students and 20 teachers using questionnaire. All respondents responded to the questionnaire. The data were presented in tables and charts and analysed using frequencies and percentages. The study found out that, the students needed career information, employment information, interpersonal needs, educational needs and self-understanding. The top career guidance needs of students as expressed by teachers and the school counsellor include educational information, study habits, interpersonal information, educational needs and career needs. The study also found that, the factors that influence students’ choice of career are extrinsic and interpersonal factors and they include perception of colleague/peer pressure, teachers’ influence, societal perceptions, availability of further training and occupational security. This helps students learn about and explore careers that ultimately lead to career choice. This played a critical role in shaping students career choice. It was recommended that Career Education and Guidance should be introduced in the primary school to enable children to explore the world of work as young people need to make a smooth transition from primary school to the initial years of Senior High School and the Ministry of Education should allocate fund for a Guidance and Counselling activities in all basic and second cycle schools. This will enable the guidance coordinators to function effectively at their various levels of work. Keywords: Career Choices, Challenges, Senior High Technical School, Students, Wa, Ghana.

The career process that has been chosen by the individual appropriately is achieved through a good planning process and independent decision making with careful consideration based on an understanding of abilities and interests as well as an introduction to careers that exist in society as a meaningful self-realization. The problem in career decision making can be categorized as an indecision career choice, so that the individual's inability to choose, or make himself to take a certain form of action that will be realized in preparing for and entering a particular job. This research is a type of literature review research by looking for theoretical references that are relevant to the cases or problems found. The results of this study stated that based on the facts in the field, it was found that there were students who had difficulty in making ideal decisions. This condition is influenced by several factors including personality, self-esteem, social support, and career readiness.

Due to increased trend in job transitions, prospects of occupation these days are difficult to predict. Therefore, workers need to develop differentiated set of skills and competences to be able to adapt to a variety of available occupations. The volatility in employability due to ever changing technologies, business environments and models need to focus on becoming lifelong learners not only to maintain their employability but to create more opportunities for themselves. This situation has affected work like of people in a way that the careers no more belong to the organizations but to individual. According to the literature on boundaryless careers, there are three types of variables that can be used to predict career success. Combinations of these three variables are generally referred to as career competencies. Theoretical research reveals that 'understanding why, ‘whom,' and 'how' are the three most important indicators of career success. The findings demonstrate that proactive career behaviors are predicted by future work self and identity resolution. Future work self has a significant positive impact on employment status and, as a result, can lead to future employment success. The findings also revealed that future work self predicts career planning the most. Career consultation is the second most reliable indicator of future employment. Future work self can also forecast proactive skill improvement and proactive career consulting. The study showed results that identity resolution predicts career planning the most. Identity resolution also predicts proactive skill development, career consultation and proactive career networking.

Career choice involves the selection of one occupation over another. It is very important as it gives people focus on what career to follow. However, a lack of adequate information on career choice is capable of negatively influencing career choices. Hence, this study examines the significance of the adequate information on career choice among first year students using a selected rural South African university. A quantitative research method was employed for data collection. Purposive and random sampling was used to select the institution and sample respectively. Questionnaires were administered to 375 randomly selected first year students studying in the selected rural South African university. The findings of the study show that career choice is important and can contribute to the success of students. Attempts are made to communicate about career pathways with students while in high schools through the provision in the curriculum. Various factors ranging from parental influence, teachers, presence or absence of career counsellors, amongst others affect the career choice of students. The study recommends that education stakeholders, inclusive of parents, should be informed on the need to guide students in making informed career choices. Career information centres should be made available to students in various locations in the country.

A research review of career education, career guidance and curricular choice in a sample of Australian secondary schools reveals an almost total lack of rationale; a lack of any coherent, planned approach; and some continuing serious confusion in the field about the actual and distinct nature of the separate but related functions of career education, career guidance and career counselling. This group of activities is also either under-resourced or not provided at all at the level of need or demand. The relationship between any form of career education processes and curricular choice structures was weak or non-existent. The interim research outcomes include recommendations for new systemic and school-based investment of specialist resources, staff and information dissemination techniques.

ABSTRACT Background Internal medicine residents face numerous career options after residency training. Little is known about when residents make their final career choice. Objective We assessed the timing and predictive factors of final career choices among internal medicine residents at graduation, including demographics, pre-residency career preferences, and rotation scheduling. Methods We conducted a retrospective study of graduates of an academic internal medicine residency program from 2014 to 2017. Main measures included demographics, rotation schedules, and self-reported career choices for residents at 5 time points: recruitment day, immediately after Match Day, end of postgraduate year 1 (PGY-1), end of PGY-2, and at graduation. Results Of the 138 residents eligible for the study, 5 were excluded based on participation in a fast-track program for an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education subspecialty fellowship. Among the remaining 133 residents, 48 (36%) pursued general internal medicine fields and 78 (59%) pursued fellowship training. Career choices from recruitment day, Match Day, and PGY-1 were only weakly predictive of the career choice. Many choices demonstrated low concordance throughout training, and general medicine fields (primary care, hospital medicine) were frequently not decided until after PGY-2. Early clinical exposure to subspecialty rotations did not predict final career choice. Conclusions Early career choices before and during residency training may have low predictability toward final career choices upon graduation in internal medicine. These choices may continue to have low predictability beyond PGY-2 for many specialties. Early clinical exposure may not predict final career choice for subspecialties.

The purpose of the study was to examine the issues and evidence of the career readiness of students in Mawako Girls in the Ho Municipality. Utilizing an explanatory sequential mixed method research design, a sample of one hundred and thirty students from Mawuko Girls Senior High School and ten teachers, from a population of 484, (comprising of 412 students and 72 teachers), were used for the study. A self-developed questionnaire (0.85) was used for students’ data collection and as an interview guide for teachers. The study was guided by four research questions. Percentages and weighted means were used to analyse the quantitative data, while thematic analysis was utilised to analyse the quantitative data. The findings of the study revealed the following: Mawako Girls students have a good level of career awareness. Additionally, students acquire information on careers from the school. electronic media, newspapers, magazines, teachers, and friends. Finally, students are faced with four major challenges as they make their career choices, namely: lack of funds to pursue required courses for the job they want to do in the future; lack of the required information for career choice-making; acceding to the career choice preferred by parents and guardians; and finally, a lack of teachers to teach required subjects for students’ preferred careers. The study recommends that the headmaster of the school should insist that students receive career guidance once they are admitted into the school. The school's library should be furnished with adequate magazines and newspapers since students read them for various reasons, including information about their career choices. The school should be connected to the World Wide Web to create a good source for educating pupils with career information. Finally, the school's computer lab must be well-equipped with internet connection and computers so that students can research careers on their own.

Introduction In pursuing optimal health care, an adequate medical workforce is crucial. However, many countries are struggling with a misalignment of students’ specialty preferences and societal needs regarding the future medical workforce. In order to bridge this gap, it is relevant to gain a better understanding of the medical career choice processes. We explored career orientations among medical students in the Netherlands and their implications for future career choices. Methods We used Q-methodology, a hybrid qualitative–quantitative method, to explore career orientations of medical students. Medical students from two universities in the Netherlands, varying in year of progression of medical school, ranked 62 statements with regard to importance for their future career choice. Participants explained their ranking in an interview and completed a questionnaire regarding demographics. Using by-person factor analysis we identified groups of individuals with similar orientations. Results Twenty-four students participated in this study, resulting in three distinct orientations towards future careers: a first career orientation that highly values lifelong self-development; a second that values work-life balance, and a third that was more concerned with achievement and recognition of their work. Conclusion Medical students’ career orientations differed in the importance of challenge, work-life balance, and need for recognition. This knowledge can help to design interventions to shift career choices of medical students closer towards future needs in society. Offering career coaching to students that challenges them to explore and prioritise their values, needs and motivations, for example using the materials form this study as a tool, and stimulates them to consider specialties accordingly, could be a promising strategy for guiding students to more long-term satisfying careers.

Future investigations should be multifactorial in design and analysis to highlight the combination of factors underlying such choices.

This study investigates the entrepreneurial intention levels and career decisions of a sample of 340 university students studying sport sciences. Entrepreneurship refers to a career-related choice that is driven by a risk-taking and innovation imperative. Entrepreneurs of the future are expected to make their career related choices well before they move into labor markets. In this context, this study attempts to designate young adults’ entrepreneurial intentions which are considered to be highly related with their career decisions. The study also tests the potential effects of career decisions on entrepreneurial intentions. The findings of the study evidence the significant effect of conscious career choice on entrepreneurial propensity. A blind career choice is found to be also correlated with entrepreneurial intentions, albeit less so than the conscious career choice. The environmental factors subscale of career choice proves to be insignificant in terms of entrepreneurial propensity within the scope of this study’s sample group. Findings are discussed with a view to practical implications.
