SummaryThe increase in the ageing population has generated much interest and research into what constitutes normal ageing. By identifying normal ageing processes it is hoped it will be possible to distinguish risk factors for the development of abnormal or premature ageing.This review discusses biological, structural and mechanical changes in the cardiovascular system with ageing that are thought to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease with ageing. Contributory factors are thought to be genetic and lifestyle related. Measurements of biological as opposed to chronological ageing such as vascular stiffness are explored as a possible useful predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, indicating its possible utilization as a non-invasive screening tool in older people.The identification of those at risk of cardiovascular disease and modification of risk factors may minimize interactions of the ageing process and therefore reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease within the UK population.

AbstractWith the pandemic of COVID-19 infection spreading throughout the world leading to unprecedented serious burden on healthcare, our understanding of the virus continues to grow on a daily basis with the whole world united to find a vaccine/cure to combat the disease. Clinical experience with growing number of cases has provided us with insight into the pathophysiology of the disease and the various systems of the body it affects. The growing experience shows that cardiovascular complications occur in significant number of cases and contribute to increased mortality. The complications and mortality is also higher in those with pre-existing cardiovascular disease. The pathogenesis of increased cardiac complications is possibly related to the action of virus surface spike proteins through ACE2 receptors expressed in the myocardium. Although various drugs/therapies are being tried currently, no effective therapy is still available. It is emphasized that those with existing cardiac disease should optimally take their medicines, and religiously follow preventive measures like social distancing, self-isolation and hand hygiene.

The structure of different systems, aiming to supply a volume of definite tissue with a specific fluid, which is for example the blood in the vascular system, obeys on similar lows, which can be expressed by mathematical equations. Those systems have fractal structure, that means every small part of the system repeats the structure of entire system. Knowing those dependencies permits calculation of one particular parameter of cardiovascular system, for example, the amount of myocardium on the basis of diameter of coronary artery supplying it. This approach is extremely applicable to the patients with coronary artery disease, where the amount of ischemic myocardium is of paramount importance for the patient`s fate. The aim of the current review is to present the main interdependencies between anatomical and physiological parameters of cardiovascular system.
