The public perception of landscape is still primarily shaped by eighteenth-century English aesthetics, pastoral idealism disassociated with infrastructural reality. This idealism is on display in most cities, in the form of municipal parks which Koolhaas states can be read as both "an operation of preservation" and "a series of manipulations."' Further support of this assertion is the means by which municipal parks preserve an appearance of naturalness. Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, the site of this thesis, is continually constructed and managed by a staff of hundreds, assuring the right varieties of vegetation, constant fish stocks in a polluted river, purposeful insect infestations, etc. If this presentation of nature is wholly synthetic, can it be re-imagined as an architectural project? Modern architecture adopted the conditioned interior as a means of isolating the interior from exterior. Pushed to its logical end, could the conditioned interior become a new municipal park? The thesis proposes that the preservation programs of the park be recast as a new interior pleasure garden which makes visible Fairmount Park's necessarily synthetic construction.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of master thesis is according to the theoretical and practical analysis of camping services to create camping service consumers’ profile and identify it. The theoretical part gives an overview of Lithuanian and foreign scientific resources of recreational value, camping and nature of their services, costumers and their profile in relation to camping. An analysis of scientific literature provided the theoretical foundations for the camping service consumers’ profile model. In order to obtain the most reliable results, has been carried out qualitative and quantitative research. Document analysis and expert interview results made it possible to approve a theoretical model whereby a survey was conducted to identify the Lithuanian camping service consumers’ profile.

Ilha Grande (Angra do Reis, RJ) has become a touristic spot, and its different beaches/communities have been visited by Brazilian as well as international tourists, mainly after the closure (in 1994) of the prison with which the island used to be identified. Amongst the various possibilities and forms of tourism that occur in these different areas of the island I study the camping tourism in the villages of Abraão and Aventureiro, while considering it a significant form of tourism in Ilha Grande. Based on research about the main social actors involved in such touristic activity in both communities, I demonstrate: on the one hand, the format, the living and the implications of such kind of tourism in each one of these communities; and on the other hand, the perceptions related to the choices and strategies as well adopted in relation to camping tourism both by local populations and by visitors.

s work is to find out whether the author writes from the margin or in the centre to recreate the origin. Gay subjectivities are of great concern to this study, yet it does not mean that it will be a product of identity politics. Identity politics does regard gender, race, or ethnicities, which are nothing but social constructions, as fixed or biologically determined traits. Thus, identity politics, while trying to recentre the decentred and marginalised identities, re-establishes the binary structure of the Western thought. This study analyses how Hollinghurst, by camping and closeting the gay male, re-produces homosexuality as a distinct identity with a subculture of its own.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis explores the motivations and practices of seasonal campers in the province of Quebec. Following Setha Low’s conceptualization of urban development and conflicts, the author examines the different ways in which campers, year after year, socially produce and construct space, time and sociability in their campground. The thesis is grounded in an ethnographic study completed during the summer of 2006 in two campgrounds located near the city of Montreal. The research results show that, far from being passive consumers, seasonal campers contribute actively to the spatial development of camping grounds and sites, to the organization and management of collective activities and to the creation of an environment which facilitates social exchange.

Ward, Walton (Walton Henry). "Design of a lightweight camping cot using carbon fiber tent poles and ripstop nylon". Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/36686.
Pełny tekst źródłaIncludes bibliographical references (p. 26).
A lightweight camping cot is currently unavailable in the backpacking market. Although camping cots do exist, they are not competitive in weight and size with sleeping pads typically used by campers. On average, sleeping pads weigh 2 pounds while the lightest weight camping cot on the market is 5 pounds. In addition, the cot does not collapse to the size of a sleeping pad. These factors prevent cots from being a suitable alternative to sleeping pads. In order to bridge this discrepancy, a lightweight cot was designed and constructed in order to give campers a viable alternative to sleeping pads. The lightweight cot designed for this thesis weighs approximately 3 pounds and collapses to the size of a sleeping pad. This 1 pound increase in weight from a sleeping pad is made up for by increased comfort while sleeping and safety during lightning storms. The lightweight cot utilizes carbon fiber poles for its structural support and ripstop nylon for the cot surface. The carbon fiber poles are connected with plastic fittings. Each of the cot's components was selected due to its highly lightweight properties and overall strength.

This dissertation aims to analyze the camping and the camping experience, as well as it most recent form – the glamping. It is also objective of this work through the conclusions sensitize companies and academy to the importance of revaluing the camping activity and their peculiarities, considering its importance for the tourism setor. In this scope, the “state of the art” realized allowed to conclude that the issues related to the camping still have growth margin, the research in this area is still reduced. It is important to know the personal preferences of the campers/glampers and what they want to get from their camping experience, in order to meet their expectations, avoid dissatisfaction and to help to define campsites and glamping accommodations market positioning. It appears that the Asian market can be especially important for glamping although this foreign market is still not representative in camping. The results of the empirical study, conducted through a questionnaire survey, suggest that the location and the surrounding area are the most important elements in the election of the campsite, which is somehow related to the importance attributed to aesthetic and escapist dimensions. The good condition of facilities and equipment offered by campsite it is not only important in choosing the campsite but it is also important for increase the value of the camper activity. Offer a memorable and positive experience becomes important for overall satisfaction. The development of specific activity programs, although they are not highly valued, they can be relevant to reduce the seasonality and correspond to the demand trends. The qualitative study results demonstrate that comparison between camping and glamping experiences may not to make sense, because they can be totally different, depending on the typology of accommodation and service provided.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis finds itself at the intersection of the sociology of the working classes and urban sociology, with a special interest in housing. It focuses on one of the forms of non-ordinary housing that has seen massive development in France in recent years: residential camping. Combining an ethnographic immersion in several campsites in the Paris region, interviews, archives and statistics, it shows the existence of a real internal stratification within this habitat, taking into account the heterogeneity of residential situations, trajectories, resources, experiences and lifestyles of the inhabitants. Residential camping has in fact emerged as fulfilling three major social functions which segment the population that practices it: it may represent an alternative to the inaccessible single-family home, or stand as a subjective and objective downgrading or even be a solution that makes up for the shortage of affordable housing, thus preventing the extreme destitution of living in the streets. Illustrating a dispositionalist-contextualist approach to ways of living, the thesis connects these three functions of camping - which also constitute three distinct lifestyles - with the particular characteristics of this unusual form of housing. It also links it to different resources, trajectories and forms of residential socialisation corresponding to relatively homogeneous popular dispositions. Finally, it identifies the causes, dynamics and consequences of eviction practices by documenting "from the inside" the case of a campground closure, an example of the risk involved in the legal status of this habitat

Pełny tekst źródłaThis paper focuses on the development of a project based on sustainability, which centers on ecotourism, by drawing up a business plan for an eco-camping in the municipality of Sintra, in Portugal. Ecotourism is a responsible form of tourism that develops in natural areas in order to promote the preservation of the environment and the people's well-being. Once presented the theoretical framework on sustainability, ecotourism and camping, and explained the methodology employed, a business plan is elaborated for the creation of an eco-camping in Colares, near Praia Grande. The purpose of this camping park is to offer an alternative accommodation to those existing in Sintra, in plain contact with nature, in order to benefit the economy and local population, by also developing activities that promote and create actions for the preservation and conservation of the environment. It is intended that the proposed activities, which include, among others, tours in the region and environmental oriented workshops, will benefit visitors and tourists, as also the resident population. Under the business plan, following the presentation of the park, an analysis of the main target markets is carried out, giving rise to the development of a marketing plan. The human resources plan and the operations plan, which follow, deepen the knowledge of the workings of the park and its activities. The study finishes with the financial plan and the necessary conclusions based on all the work involved in this master degree project.

This study re-examined Liberman and Tropes’ (2002) classic study investigating the effect of construal level on categorizing based on Construal level theory (CLT). CLT predicted distant future events were represented in high-level, abstract categories and near future events were represented in low-level, specific categories. Study 1 (N = 36) indicated near future group (N=18) has more categories (M = 6.67) than distant future group (M = 5.39; t(36) = 2.09, p < .05) which supported previous study. Study 2 (N = 61) intended to extend Study 1 by examining the moderating role of personal schema on the relationship between temporal distance and category. However, result od study 2 did not supported our prediction. Implication and application were discussed

This study aims to explore the behavioral characteristics of the consumers in the Longmen Camping Park--primarily through their decision-making models. A field survey was conducted by means of convenience sampling and a total of 403 valid questionnaires were collected. In analyzing the data of these questionnaires, the socioeconomic statistical variables and the traits of the consumption behavior of the tourists in the Longmen Camping Park are interpreted and described in detail. Besides, the data are tested by a travel-related lifestyle scale and are analyzed by means of such methods as factor analysis, cluster analysis, variance analysis, and chi-square homogeneity test in order to find out whether various clusters of tourists differ in socioeconomic background, lifestyle, and consumption behavior. Finally, suggestions for future research are offered for reference by the tourist industry and related governmental agencies. The major findings of this study were as follows. Firstly, the majority of the tourists to this camping park were women. The largest percentage of the tourists were aged from 36 to 45. These tourists mainly worked in business and the service industry and they mostly earned a monthly income of NT$40,000 – NT$60,000. The greatest number of them had received a college or junior college education. Most of them were single and lived in greater Taipei, namely Taipei City, New Taipei City and Keelung City. Secondly, with respect to consumer behavior, 175 of these tourists came here to get close to nature, which was their chief need/motivation. Most of them learned about this camping area because of the recommendations made by relatives or friends, and they travelled by car. The majority of them visited the park for the first time. Each tourist spent an average of NT$500-NT$1,000 here. And a large percentage of them came here together with their family members or relatives. Thirdly, according to their lifestyles, this study divides these consumers into four clusters, namely “life-changing & relaxing type,””negative tourist type,””having fun with family type,” and “abundant life and sociable type.” It is found that except for the variable of gender, these clusters show significant differences in various demographic variables. Finally, when making consumption decisions, consumers in different clusters show significant differences in terms of tourist need/motivation, information gathering, purchase behavior, and post-purchase behavior.

Abstract People who are living in the urban areas would like to go into the nature for outdoor recreational activities and camping has become a trend of this kind. In recent years, in order to meet the demands of camping activities, campsites are booming in the rural or countryside areas. Inspite of the legal problem, the management problems are derseved to be emphasized. Based on the supply-demand rules of the market, the campsite managers need to understand the needs of the campers in order to offer the supply. This study investigated the needs of campers with different social economic backgrounds based on their campsite attribute preferences, camping experience preferences, past camping experiences and campsite choice intentions. On-line survey was used to collect data by snowball sampling approach and consequently ended up with 354 valid questionnaires. SPSS statistical methods were used for data analyses to examine the study hypotheses. The study results were presented as the followings. 1.The reliability tests were applied to variables including: campsite attribute preferences, camping experience preferences, past camping experiences and the results showed that they all gained a reliability of Cronbach’s alpha value greater than 0.7, which menat the variables of all the three kinds were reliable. Then, exploratory factor analysis method was applied to gain factors of each kind of questions and ended up first with 2 factors for campsite attributes preferences, including: “resources of facilities and services” and “traffic and landscape spots”; secondly, 3 factors for camping experience preferences, including: “leisure and fun experiences”, “natural environment experiences” and “inspiration of learning experiences”; finally, 3 factors for the past camping experiences, including: “facilities aspect”, “services aspect” and “natural resources aspect”. As to the campsite choice intention, only one factor was gained due to only 3 questions. 2.There were significant differences in campsite attributes preferences for the factor of facilities and services resources when the genders and residence were different; There were significant differences in some of the camping experience preferences factors when genders and education levels were different; There were significant differences in 3 factors of the past camping experiences when education levels were different. 3.In the mutual relationship analyses for the factors of campsite attributes preferences, camping experiences preferences, past camping experiences and campsite choice intentions, respectively. Except factors between campsite attribute preferences for traffic and landscape spot factor and camping experience preference for leisure and fun experience factor, all the rest factors showed different levels of significantly positive relationships among those factors. 4.In terms of campsite management, the campsite attributes should be focused on the provision of natural environment experiences as the first priority; while the campsite attribute of “traffic and landscape spot’ may enhance campers’ inspiration of learning experiences and may have high significant relationship with the past camping experiences of “natural resources” factor. According to the study results and discussions, some suggestions were presented for the references of the campsite managers in their campsite operations; meanwhile there are some future study issues also to be presented for interesting researchers to continue relevant studies.
